Someone had a really great bruise on her leg that was shown during half time in locker room - you know the kind that a shoe leaves, you could see the seams. I tore a nail half way off - I painted them blue and gold for the game. It was really beyond belief coming out of the plebe funnel - I can see why the guys like it. There were Army big guys there, and even a Navy big wig rearranged her important meeting to be here. I played hard, didn't let them get through me without effort, I just held on tight until someone could get the flag. We almost did not go because it was cold, and we were tired from a long day, but we went anyway and I will tell you that we will never miss a chance to go to this game again. It is played at Navy every other year so it will not be back at home until 2001. If you are coming to the A/N game that year and you have the extra time, this event is as much fun as the "bigger" one. A Mid told me the girl's team is made up of anyone who wants to play. Some are soccer players, some are rugby players and some he said do not play any varsity sport. But they were good, better than Army who also looked good and I wonder how they had the time to practice all the plays they had up their sleeves along with all the other work they have to do. Dewey field is along the seawall and Navy had the seawall side and Army had the building side of the field. Metal bleachers sit on each side of the field. Army brought about four busloads of players, fans and band members but their stands were essentially empty. Navy on the other hand was bursting out of its seams with fans. The stands were filled and so was the area between the stands and the sideline. Everywhere you looked were mobs of Mids dressed in their blue and gold suits. To say that the game is informal is putting it mildly. Not the players or the game itself but what goes on along the sidelines. They have a Mid announcer who stands among the fans on the sidelines and announces not only the plays but whatever else comes into his head. The D&B was there and when they were not playing, CD songs with great dance beats were blasting from the sound system. My ears are still ringing! Then there were the cheerleaders---men from the Rugby team I was told! They were stuffed into the women's cheerleading sleeveless tops and shorts skirts. And I mean stuffed. The tops only came half way down their chests so their midrift was bare and their arm muscles were bulging out the sleeve holes. They could not zip up the back of the skirts because they needed the zipper area to span their waists. They had bare legs and no socks. Many of them had blue or gold colored wigs on. They looked ridiculous and loved it! They did a good imitation of the varsity cheering squad, leading the fans in cheers in unison, cart wheels and they stood on the extended arms of other cheerleaders but it did take about 3 or 4 to hold one up. And they dropped from this position into the arms of the other cheerleaders. But graceful??????? Well let's say that the varsity cheerleaders do not have to worry about losing their jobs. And they danced and danced and danced throughout the game. But then so did all the fans and even the players danced when they were not on the field playing. Every Mid there danced to the beat of whatever was playing. The stands literally rocked and bounced and I was certainly glad that the stands were much stronger than they appear because thankfully they could take this pounding without giving out and collapsing. When the D&B played the fight song "GO NAVY.....BEAT ARMY" every person on the field and in the stands hoped up and down in unison to the beat. I suspect anyone who chose not to move voluntarily was propelled up and down with the movement of the bleachers. We took seat cushions to the game but they were useless becasue no one sat the entire time. Everyone stood and everyone cheered continuously like it was the most important game ever played. And because I am short and everyone standing in front of me was tall (big Mids) and because the sidelines were packed solid with big tall fans and we were in the first row of stands, I could not see most of the action on the field and had to depend on the cheering and the announcer to tell me what was happening. And you could not talk or ask any questions about what was happening because of the continuous, non stop noise. There was never a pause in the noise the entire game and that is something I've never seen at a sporting event before. The cheerleaders had boxes of 100 year anniversary shirts. During their cheers they would grab a shirt from the box and swing it over their heads and the crowd would go wild because at some point they would release the shirt and throw it into the stands. A young boy, maybe about 8 or 9 went onto the sidelines to join ranks with the cheerleaders and it was neat to see how these huge guys bent over to talk with him and include him in their dances. They then probably gave this young guy the treat of his life as they lifted him up above their heads and allowed him to stand on their hands in front of the crowd. They ever so gently and carefully got him back down to the ground. As you can probably tell I loved it, every single minute of it even though my hands and feet were numb from the cold. But then so did everyone else have as good a time as we did. The girls did their part. Now when the boys follow suit as we certainly all expect they will, there will be a wonderful ringing of the bells celebration to attend on Monday. It was a great afternoon for Navy swimming. The guys did us proud as they whipped Army. Let's hope it's a preview of thing to come tomorrow on the football field. There was an exuberant celebration following the meet. The Mids all jumped into the pool, taking the coaches along for a dip. They followed this up by gathering atop the 10 meter platform and leaping two or three at a time into the diving pool. The plebes were sporting I-day haircuts. I was surprised by this as my son had said he didn't plan to go close cut. "It was not optional" was the explanation. Hope everyone is enjoying some aspect of Army/Navy Week. Below is the swim page write up if you would like further details, GO NAVY!! BEAT ARMY!! Best Wishes, Linda Hobert Christopher 03/23 ANNAPOLIS, Md. (Dec. 3) -- The Navy men's swimming team defeated Army, 173-71, Friday afternoon at Lejeune Hall. It was the ninth consecutive season the Midshipmen have won the battle between the two rivals, and the spread of 72 points was the largest margin of victory by either school in the series that dates back to the 1938-39 season. The previous largest margin of victory was 74 points, set in 1995 when the Mids won, 158.5-84.5. Navy won 12 of the 13 events in the dual meet and finished 1-2-3 in four events. Clint Cornell (Jr., Dickson City, Pa.) set a new Navy record in the 50-meter freestyle with a converted time of 20.35. This breaks the previous school standard of 20.42, set by Tyson Lewis in 1991. Cornell's time is a NCAA Provisional qualifying mark for the NCAA Meet this spring. He also set a new Navy season-best mark of 50.48 in the 100-meter freestyle. Sumner Rollings (Fr., Poway, Calif.) set a new team season-best time of 8:20.17 in the 800-meter freestyle, as did Beau Oliver (Jr., Theodore, Ala.) in the 200-meter individual medley (2:03.48). In addition, Peter Fehring set a new Navy season-best time of 2:19.47 in the 200-meter breaststroke. The Midshipmen closed the meet by winning the 400-meter freestyle relay in a Lejeune Hall Pool record time of 3:22.25 (Brian Glaser, Clint Cornell, Leif Kennedy, Brett Cline), breaking the old record of 3:23.39, set in 1983. Navy, now 4-0 on the season, will next be in action on Sat., Jan. 8, when it hosts Harvard at Lejeune Hall. *** USNA-SPORTS post by: HOBERT Christopher G. 03 HOBERT Harry and Linda ~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~. by westpoint.west-point.org (8.9.1/8.9.1) id OAA00856 for usna-sports-outgoing; Sat, 4 Dec 1999 14:35:37 -0600 (CST) From: "gandy" To: Subject: usna-sports: final score of the 100th game! During the Second World War, when so many young men enlisted, Notre Dame was faced with such a drastic drop in enrollment that they were going to have to close the school for economic reasons. Hearing of the plight of the school, the Naval Academy sent half of its Midshipmen to Notre Dame to complete their education and Military Training, thus saving the school from fiscal failure. To this day, Notre Dame plays Navy each year as a token of appreciation for that action which saved the school from certain closure. As is mostly the case, famous rivalries have roots steeped in tradition and noble causes. Go Navy! Then, the course merged onto the C&O Canal towpath, and we began a grueling 26.2 miles of running along terrain that was flat, but very narrow. Our last challenge was 8.3 miles of rolling hills." One 1/C Mid finished in 65th place with a time of 8 hrs, 3 minutes. Six other mids (1/C, 3/C and 4/C) came in under 10 hours. Commander C. J. Ellis, the 5th Battalion officer with the greyhounds that Joyce Burns described last week, came across the line in a time of 10:21. When I met her the night of the pep rally, she was justifiably proud of the achievement. Although I got some pictures during the meet, I had stepped outside the immediate pool area for a few minutes and missed the opportunity to get a picture of the team with the trophy. My son says maybe some of his teammates got a picture, but he has been to busy to ask. So if anyone did get a picture, could you please e-mail me privately? I would pay for the cost of any reprints and of course the mailing. Thanks so much. CBS, which averaged a tv rating of 3.7 for the year, got a 5.1 rating for the Army-Navy game-- the highest rated Army-Navy game since 1994, when the game drew a 5.4. The only games to do better than the Army-Navy game were the Florida-Florida State game (:6.9) and the prime-time, split national games between Tennessee-Florida and Michigan-Syracuse (7.5). SYRACUSE??? Tell all your friends everywhere to tune in to the Army-Navy game next year, so we'll be Numero Uno in 2000!!! The Annapolis Capital had a big article announcing that the Harlem Wizards, an entertainment basketball act, will take part in the First Night Festivities in Annapolis, playing two "games" at the USNA Halsey Fieldhouse. They have even been actively seeking "area stars," opponents, to play against -- TOO BAD the USNA b-ball teams are home on Leave! "Who needs the hassle fo finding a suitable sitter when you can relax in the Naval Academy's Halsey Field House with your children in tow and watch a basketball game played by grown men named ToJo, A-Train and Magic Man? Who needs a New Year's Day headache when you can see a team that, in 1995, featured a player called The Rainbow Man who made a habit of sinking half-court shots from his knees? And he did it with his back to the basket! On their current roster is a former member of the Chicago Bulls, 3 players who played professionally overseas, and 10 former collegiate stars.......Slated to take on the Wizards is a hodgepodge of local hoops talent. Current and past players from the Naval Academy and local prep stars from Annapolis and Severn High Schools are amont those who will cycle in and out of the two games." I'll let you know if any of the USNA players are mentioned by name or get their pictures in the paper tomorrow.......... On another sports note, as we watch, the Hoffers' Colorado Golden Buffs are making mincemeat out of the Boston College team that DARED to beat USNA this Fall. We are HAPPY in this football house this afternoon! Happy bowl games to all! SLEEP LATE tomorrow! Joyce Hoffer, Sponsor Mom, Annapolis *** USNA-SPORTS post by: HOFFER Joyce and Barry
