This semester is boxing and a common injury is a broken hand. Boxers break is what they call it. A friend of mine whose mid is in 01, told me to send sports tape to my mid and have him find someone up there who can show him how to wrap his hands to protect them. Her mid did break his hand last year. They do not show them in class, because there isn't enough time, but there are enough mids around the yard to show them. I know nothing about boxing and don't care to, but I would advise your mid to heed the advice given by Carol. When Brian was six and his younger brother, Matt, was four, they got into a nasty argument that resulted in swinging fists. As I was pulling them apart, Matt got in one last fierce swing which was a direct hit to Brian's head with his clenched fist. After I got things settled down, I was able to assess any damage done. Brian had a small knot on his head, but Matt's hand was swelling like a surgeon's glove blown full of air. Almost in front of our eyes, we could see his fingers seem to shrink as his hand swelled around them. We were soon off to the emergency room where the x-rays showed a broken bone. The attending physician called it boxer's break and everyone there made a big fuss over this cute little four year old with a boxer's break while I was trying to impress upon him how wrong hitting is. I was failing miserably. They sent him home with an ice pack and we were told to return the following morning when they would set the bone in a cast. Matt was in so much pain that night while we tried to keep the swelling down and his hand elevated, that he finally DID learn a lesson. Some would call that justice, but after seeing how much pain he was in, I had to feel sorry for him even if it was his own fault. Anyway, I am sure our big strapping mids could handle the pain better than my sweet little four year old, but why bother? Tape those hands!!! This was my first Navy Basketball game, and I made a point of writing down my impressions. Here goes: Sightings: Verna Tiegen, Sponsor Mom Extraordinaire. How NICE to meet her!! MIDN 4/C D. Gonzales, whom I took to the airport (favor to her mom) before Christmas break. She was on watch and patrolling the gym. No-No's: DON'T go alone to a Navy b-ball game. It's no fun not to have anyone to talk to! DON'T stay in the seat they sell you at the door. Being two rows from the top in Denver Nuggets' arena used to be called "Up in the Blue Sky." My seat caused just as much of a nosebleed. I moved down into an empty one (there were literally HUNDREDS) during the first quarter. DON'T expect to see lots of Mids there. I would estimate about four hundred. Of course, that was better than the Cadets - I never could count more than a dozen, even when craning to look around for their women who were SLOWLY parading around that mid-level walkway. Strolling? Trolling?????? The WOOPS also brought a small Drum and Bugle team and about 6 cheer- leaders. DON'T wear your full-length mink coat to the game, march like a queen down to the third row in a half-empty section, and unseat three mids who had placed themselves there. Highlights: Spirited mids in the stands at the far end of the court who had brought a beach ball along, and kept it aloft for most of the first half. The female Firstie who came into the row in front of me, where two other women mids were seated, and cried, "I just finished tutoring and I can't find the kid's Mom!!" The 4 yr. old girl practicing her cheers, dressed in one of those kiddie cheerleader jumpers from the Visitor Center Store, with white tights, yellow and blue ponytail holders, and pom poms. She went up to Bill the Goat and gave him a BIG hug, even though she was so tiny, I don't think he saw or felt her! The two dads who RUSHED their tiny boys down the steps to talk to Bill the Goat. He reached out to tickle them and they jumped back into dads' arms. (Bill is NEAT!!) The Ball Girl from town, about 8 yrs. old, and the ONLY girl (about 5 or 6 Ball BOYS) -- who went out on the court to wipe the keyhole dry for the players. The Old Timers' Shootout at halftime. Former mids from the classes of 52 and 58, seeing how many baskets they could make in a fixed 3 minutes. One cry from our side of the stands went up, "GO, Grampa!" Anyway, I had a good time and wished you all had been there! GO NAVY!!! Joyce Hoffer, Sponsor Mom P.S. Sorry to report that the Army women beat our team in the afternoon game. I did hear a rumor about a broken nose on the Army side, however. *** USNA-SPORTS post by: HOFFER Joyce and Barry
