The race is only 5 blocks from where the meetings will be held. Many places in the city are closing down, including GWU, according to Matt. He and his team are extremely disappointed that they won't be able to race the many competitors that this regatta attracts. We went to this race last year. The weather was wonderful, the cherry blossoms were out and it was a great day to be in D.C. It is held down at Rock Creek Park along the Potomac. Besides being the best racing venue for spectators, you can stroll along the riverwalk and even lunch at some cafes. Navy usually does quite well at this race with many of the crew-- women's and men's crews bringing home medals. The team is trying to contact some of the other teams affected to see if they might be able to scrape some sort of race together somewhere. He will take what is called "basket leave" -- an entire year's worth of vacation time at once -- in order to participate in Green Bay's 8 week training camp in July. I loved his comment: "I'm in a unique position. I'm a professional Naval officer and a professional football player. My first commitment is to the Navy, my second commitment is to the Packers. It's going to be a grind, but I'm ready for the challenge." When Navy's basketball team played Rice here in Houston last fall, our parents club had a tailgate party. It was not as big as the one for football, yet it was still very nice and well attended. I say go for it. Have things they can fix or just pick up and carry, along with individual bottles of water and juice. That way if time gets tight, they're still being fed. Have a great time with "our Mids." Sounds like a party. Their first game is this Saturday at noon against Penn State. If they beat Penn State, the final will be played Sunday at 5pm against the winner of the Ohio/Maryland match. The final four is being held at Albright College in Reading, Pa. We'll be there with lots of warm clothing on, since it is supposed to be miserable weather. The good news is, when Navy played in the Penn State Tournament last year they brought home the first place trophy, partly because the weather was terrible, cold and rainy, and Navy was used to performing in any kind of weather. He is thrilled with the returning players, and sees the team as "a talented and experienced group." He has found a placekicker and a punter. He has filled the vacancies caused by graduation and is planning on using the two Brian Quarterbacks to improve Navy's passing game. Lots of names of promising players mentioned. Check out the Capital's website to see if your football player's is one of them! As for the B-ball team, Navy has just been invited to participate in the 2000-2001 Preseason Natl. Invitation Tournament, the first Patriot League team to play in the 16-yr. old event. Other unranked teams that will join Navy in the field include Mississippi State, George Mason, Fairfield, Pepperdine and S. Alabama. The semifinals and championship games will be played at Madison Sq. Garden. (Ranked teams include Duke, Temple, Texas, Indiana.) Maybe some games in YOUR town???? Also, American Univ. has just joined the Patriot League, which gives the league an automatic 2000-2001 NCAA berth and allows other teams in the conference to play games at Navy and American in one trip. St. John's Imperial Wicket Bob D, whose father graduated from the Naval Academy in 1947, is positive his team will win. "Midshipman 1st Class J. I., from East Sandwich, Mass, hand-picked his team from the 28th Company. It has been tradition since the first match that seniors from the 28th Company are tapped for the annual event." "The matches have become somewhat of a show for residents, who come decked out in seersucker suits, sweater vests, long dresses and straw hats." [They are in for a surprise tomorrow, as the field will probably be wet and muddy!] "About 1,000 people spread out on blankets last year to sip champagne and nibble on hors d'oeuvres while the Johnnies claimed their 14th cup with a score of 5-0." "Midshipmen, who excel in many sports, admit croquet just isn't their thing. Most team members never even picked up a mallet before last month......The croquet rivalry started in 1982 when a group of midshipmen hanging out in the former Little Campus pub on Maryland Avenue taunted a group of Johnnies that they could beat St. John's in any sport.....Traditionally, both teams meet for lunch during the week before the match -- once in each institution's dining hall. Today St. John's hosts a party and performance for both teams, and following the match tomorrow there will be a WALTZ and trophy presentation at St. John's." This Sponsor Mom just thought you might like to spend Saturday morning imagining the mids, in their white pants, white shoes and "varsity croquet sweaters," on the hill by College Creek, playing the Johnnies, in assorted gear. V1 beat Holy Cross by about 14 seconds. V2 and V3 raced together against Holy Cross and came in 1st and 2nd with V3 only racing 7 men the last part because of a problem one of the men had with about 500 meters to go ---yet they still beat Holy Cross by about 4 seconds while V2 came in about 8 seconds ahead. Plebe 1 and 2 also raced together against Holy Cross and came in 1 and 2 --- so VICTORY all the way around for the Navy teams in their heats. Met many nice young men on the team --- most whose names, unfortunately, I didn't get because they were too busy eating. Mom hugs were given to Midn. Rigler, Houda, Larsen and Peck --- their families are on here and I want to tell you that your sons are fine. They all kind of roll their eyes and shake their heads when they learn how I know about them! Also met the Anderson family from California --- they were in for the week and staying down at Annapolis and came up for the meet to watch their son who is a youngster. They are on this net too --- and love it as well. Managed to hand out one web site card to a father who didn't know anything about it but overheard our conversation about how wonderful it was! He's interested in getting on to it now. Provided a tailgate lunch for the team and if one said thank you, I think they all must have said it! Came back with hardly anything left --- and this after they had been chowing down on donuts and bagels. Plus, on their way out --- they were stopping off to pick up a deli order that they would then take with them! Glad I don't have to think about feeding them all the time! For those of you thinking of doing a tailgate in the future --- here's a little heads-up --- juice drinks, chocolate chip cookies, mini carrots, trail mix and strawberry twizzlers were a huge hit with these "college" men --- never mind the sandwiches, chips and water that they managed to scarf down as well. All you 'rents should feel really proud about your sons --- they are an awesome bunch! Polite --- well-mannered young men --- and yet --- still kids at heart! We took our 17 year old daughter with us and must say --- she has had a grin on ever since --- something about a man in uniform --- even if it is a blue and gold sweatsuit!!!! Do have a team photo that we will try and get to Mike to post for everyone to see --- and possibly some other photos as well --- the mids were ever so accomodating to the few of us taking the photos --- even before we agreed to use their cameras and take some shots for them too. What a great way to spend a Saturday morning --- sure hope there will be further opprtunities in the future. I don't think I saw a score (are there scores in croquet?) but the Capital highlighted on match where St. John was about to hit thru the wicket for the win, and the Mids were on their 3rd of 12 wickets and struggling. No real surprise there. As previously stated, we only play croquet this one time each year - the Johnnies are NCAA National Champs. I didn't even know that croquet was a NCAA sport.
