Tried calling at 10:00am to Ticketmaster and said the game was already SOLD
OUT! Need two tickets. Hope I haven't breached any rules. Keep my email
address if for some reason anyone has extras.

Tickets must be really a "limited" number! Had two telephone lines plus the
internet going before 10AM EST. My call was answered around 10:05 and
tickets are gone already.

How did we get this way that family of midshipman cannot get enough tickets
for his/her family? (I know how it happened, but frustrated anyway. Just
venting, so thanks for listening.

Have A Great Navy Day!

Hi, All!
I was IN the ticket office at Ricketts Hall at 11 AM this morning to buy
tickets for the Temple Game and the US vs. Russian soccer match. A
lieutenant at the window had just purchased SEASON'S TICKETS for his parents
and was guaranteed tickets for the Army-Navy game as a result. He told me he
actually got through to Ticketmaster this morning at 10:01, but while he was
looking to see where the seats were that the operator had told him about, she
sold those seats! Since he wanted his parents to see the game, he walked in
to Ricketts himself.
I also overheard the person who answers the phone at NAAA telling someone
far away that they could still buy season's tickets and get one Army-Navy
ticket for each subscription they purchased. I therefore assume that if you
are willing to go that extra mile, you might obtain the Dec. 2 tickets you
want, though I KNOW that is not possible for everyone.
For plebe parents, last year, at the last minute, some folks with tickets
discovered they would not be able to make the game after all, and those seats
became available. You might want to just hold on and hope.......

Joyce is correct. The Naval Academy Ticket Office still has season tickets for sale and for every season ticket you purchase, they still have some Army Navy Tickets you can buy (one for every season ticket). They told me this morning that they did not think these would last much more than a week or two. The reason that I know this has something to do with my poor planning. For those of you who like to gamble, there was a flurry of last minute tickets available on this net.

Bud & Cindy,
No experinence with cross country schedules but if you go to
www.navysports.com under e-mail address you could drop the coach a quick
note and ask. If it runs the same time as it did here on Long Island they
should be finishing up the schedule soon.

Hello Everyone:

This is my first time writing, I just joined this week. I hope I do this
right!!

My name is Patti Leong, my son Aaron '01" is a mechanical engineering
major and is in Lt. Weight Crew. We're from Fresno, California.

I have a question about the Ring Dance activities. There are times when
certain sports are in competition during the weekend of Ring Dance.
This past May,
Lt. Weight Crew, and I think Track were out of town during the event so
the
11 Mids in Lt. Weight crew got together to put on their own ring
ceremony and dinner/dance activities.

They had been under the impression that there would be funds and
supplies made available to them to make their event as nice as it could
be under the circumstances. That did not happen. They did put their
own event together a week before the main Ring Dance.

I happened to be at the home of another Midshipmen in June and saw a
group of wonderful souvenirs from the "Official Ring Dance" that her son
had sent home for safekeeping. A beautiful etched champagne glass, a
nice booklet explaining the tradition of Ring Dance and a replica of the
ring itself on a chain. I of course was heartbroken that my son hadn't
sent his home.

I asked my son if the souvenirs had been made available to them and he
knew nothing about them. The ring dance committee know of the Lt. Weight
Crew situation and I am wondering why the souvenirs were not made
available to the group. Our understanding is that funds from their pay
had been put aside for the Ring dance ceremony to pay for not only the
dinner, the dance, pictures and the souvenirs weather they participated
or not.

I was wondering if anyone would know of who to contact to see if any of
the souvenirs are still around. I would hate to think that the souvenirs
that were meant for those who were not able to attend and their dates,
may have been given out as "extras".

Patti Leong

The Mens Varsity Soccer is currently in Germany going through their two aday
preseason training. Spoke with my son Craig('03) this morning. They are all
having a good time. They practice twice a day 7am/6pm. They played twice over
the weekend against the local clubs, winning both games 1-0, 5-4. He says
that they have been rained out of a couple of games. It has been rainy quite
a bit since they been there.
They have been doing there site seeing during the afternoon breaks and
visiting the local establishments in the evenings.
Sounds like life is good in the Navy.

NAVY FOOTBALL NOTES FROM PRACTICE 1; DAY 1

WEATHERBIE PLEASED WITH FIRST PRACTICE

Navy head coach Charlie Weatherbie put his team through drills this morning
at 5:45 a.m. and he liked what he saw.
"I thought we had a great first practice," said Weatherbie. "I thought we
had great recall from the spring. We picked up right where we left off from
the spring mentally. Physically they are going to have to get back in the
groove a little bit. They were a little sluggish at 5:45 in the morning,
but I think that will come. There is a lot of thinking going on right now
and it is hard to think and react at the same time. I felt like we had good
leadership by the seniors this morning and the guys busted their tails once
they came out here. If we can continue to do that I think we have a chance
to have a pretty fair football team."

OFFENSIVE LINE STANDS OUT

With five seniors returning to start on the offensive line, Weatherbie feels
like the line may be a strong point of this yearıs team.
"I felt like the offensive line looked pretty good today. They have all
come back in good shape. Adams, Swantner, Stahl, Yeh and Winchester all
looked good today and I think they have a chance to be pretty good.:

IMPRESSIVE PLEBES

The coaching staff invited 11 plebes to participate in two-a-days with the
varsity. One plebe in particular has already stood out, cornerback David
Bush out of Skyline High School in Oakland, Calif.
"David Bush came out in the plebe practices and did some great things and
then today against the varsity I thought he came out and looked good," said
Weatherbie.
Bush was recruited by Navy secondary coach Charles McMillian when McMillian
was at Boise State. He is glad Bush chose Navy.
"He is going to be a very good player," said McMillian. "He has a chance to
play this year."
Other plebes invited to practice with the varsity include cornerback
Shalimar Brazier, punter Mason Burk, quarterback Craig Candeto, outside
linebacker Eddie Carthan, wide receiver Martin Huggins, strong safety A.J.
Johnson, quarterback Tony Lane, cornerback Ben Mathews, cornerback Marcus
Sanders and defensive lineman Kevin Schwind.

BAILEY AND WORTHING IMPRESS

One of the question marks heading into the fall is at wide receiver where
only Brandon Rampani returns with much experience. Sophomore Dominic Bailey
and senior Chris Worthing were both impressive this morning, catching long
touchdown passes from Broadwater.
"Chris Worthing has got some athletic ability. Once he learns what to do
and he doesnıt have to think about it he has a chance to be a heck of a wide
receiver. Dominic Bailey made some big plays this morning and I thought
Rampani and Brian Williams looked good as well."
Worthing is playing football at Navy for the first time. He spent the
previous three seasons on the basketball team.

MALINOWSKI BACK AT QUARTERBACK

When last seen on the football field, junior Ed Malinowski was playing free
safety in the spring game, picking off a pass and coming up with some big
hits. But, with the knee injury that starter Brian Madden suffered in that
same game, Malinowski is back home at quarterback.
"I have always been for whatever is best for the team," said Malinowski. "I
moved to safety in the spring because I thought that was where I was most
needed. We were a little short there and coach thought that was the best
chance for me to get playing time. Plus, I would have the opportunity to
play special teams. But, as it turns out, with Brian going down, they are
going to need me on offense just because I have a little more experience
than the younger guys. I am happy to be back at quarterback. That is more
of a natural position for me. It was fun to play defensive back. Itıs fun
to run around, tackle and be an athlete but I like playing quarterback.
Itıs the focus of this offense."
Malinowski didnıt find out for sure he was going back to quarterback until
he reported on Sunday, but a little browsing on the internet gave him a clue
he better get ready to play quarterback.
"When I was home I read the 2000 Navy Football Outlook on the Navy sports
web site (navysports.com) and in two different places it said there was a
chance I would be moved back to quarterback so I figured I probably should
start throwing just in case."

OOPS

Outside linebacker Shaka Martin picked off a Brian Broadwater pass in
seven-on-seven drills and ran for daylights.the only problem was he ran the
wrong way. After about 15 yards Martin realized he was going the wrong way
and turned around and started running the right way. By then, most of the
players had stopped playing because they were laughing so hard.

NAVY FOOTBALL NOTES FROM PRACTICE 1; DAY 2

 WEATHERBIE COMMENTS

"Real early I thought we were a little sluggish but once they got warmed up
I thought we had a good practice. I thought the speed of the game looked
better. We are still installing things on both sides of the football so
there is a lot of thinking going on, but the retention has been
unbelievable
from the spring and I think the guys are really picking things up quick so
 things are going pretty well."

 Brindel Moved

Josh Brindel has been moved from outside linebacker to nose guard where he
is currently listed second on the depth chart behind Andy Zetts.
"That was one of those things that we talked about in the summer doing and
we wanted to see how big he was when he reported back to us," said
Weatherbie. "That nose position is critical to us right now. We have to
find somebody whose going to step up and make the plays in there. We are
taking a look at a lot of guys in there right now."

 Off The Boat

Navy practiced for the first time this morning with their full 105 players
as several players missed the first two days of practice because of summer
cruise. Notables practicing for the first time include fullback Cee
Harris,
quarterback Christian Chapman and running back Gene Reese.
"It was good to get those guys in here," said Weatherbie. "They just got
back in last night and came out to practice today and gave us a little
 spark, a little burst."

COMMENTS FROM SECONDARY COACH CHARLES MCMILLIAN

"I think right now the secondary is coming on pretty well. The group we
have coming back is a pretty strong group and the one thing that I bring to
this field is a little bit of attitude. We need to play with a little more
attitude in the secondary and that is going to make us a whole lot better.

 On the talent level

"These guys can compete with anybody because of their work ethic and they
play for a reason, they play for each other. At most universities guys
tend
to play for themselves. We have kids who can run and break on the ball.
The key is to come out with some confidence and attitude. You are going to
see a difference in these guys this fall."

 On the talented plebes

"We've got some great plebes. Shalimar Brazier and David Bush are two
guys
who are very impressive. Speaking of confidence, those two guys come out
and compete every day. From plebe summer to now you would think they would
have dead legs, and you can tell the speed is not there right now because
they are tired, but as far as competition goes you can't stop those two
guys
from competing every day. If they had any experience at all they would be
 competing for a starting job."

What he is trying to accomplish during two-a-days

"The rest of two-a-days we are working on attitude and confidence. Last
year there were plenty of questions asked about why we were letting a
five-yard route turn into a 20-yard gain and that is kind of the way they
played it last year, but we are going to have a different attitude this
year. We are going to trying and read that and make a break on the ball.
That will give us more opportunities to come up with big plays and limit
guys being wide open all the time. If you can show me a defense that
doesn't play man-to-man throughout the season and has success then I will
believe in playing zone all the time. At some given time you have to give
your kids an opportunity to play some man-to-man in the secondary. I think
man-to-man helps you win football games.

NAVY FOOTBALL NOTES FROM PRACTICE 2; DAY 2

WEATHERBIE COMMENTS

"We had another good practice today. We had a couple of guys that I wish
were practicing that arenıt. Cee Harris (FB) had a little bit of heat
problem, he was cramping up a little bit this morning, and Brad Tepper a
young RB is out for awhile as well. We just have to keep chopping wood and
getting a little bit better everyday."

SPENCER REHABBING

Though not among the 105 players that were invited back for two-a-days
junior wide receiver Harry Spencer came back on his own so he could continue
rehabilitating his back with the training staff. Spencer missed all of last
year with a broken bone in his lower back is hopeful he can be back by the
Temple game.

COMMENTS FROM DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR TIM DERUYTER

"I think we have had four good practices so far. Itıs nice this year having
veteran players returning, because they have picked things up 10 times as
fast as a year ago and I feel we are much farther ahead than we were a year
ago."

On What He Is Trying To Accomplish In The Six Practices He Has Before The
Pads Come On

"We are installing all of our defenses against every formation known to man.
Itıs a lot of mental work for these guys. We try to rapid fire everything
in and see how smart these guys are, see what adjustments they make and how
many busted assignments we have. So far they have done a good job."

Nose Guard Position

"Thatıs a position that when you are just going against air everybody looks
good. We will find out more once we get the pads on. We did make a move, we
moved Josh Brindel from outside linebacker to nose guard and we feel like
with Brindel in there, Andy Zetts, who came on strong in the spring time,
Alan Thompson and Matt Berger we have a solid foundation to find a nose
guard."

MALINOWSKI TRADE COMPLETED

In what looks like an old baseball trade, J.P. Blecksmith was the player to
be named later in the trade of Ed Malinowski from defense back to offense.
Malinowski was slated to play in the secondary but an injury to Brian Madden
in the spring forced Malinowski back to quarterback. Blecksmith, who at 6-3
and 221 pounds was by far and away the biggest quarterback on the roster,
was listed behind Broadwater, Malinowski and Chapman on the depth chart and
was being challenged by three fine freshmen, so a move was made to give him
a chance to play.
"We will probably try him out at strong safety first because we have less
depth there, but both positions are fairly similar," said DeRuyter. We like
him. Heıs a physical kid who can run and we are always looking for those
kinds of guys I think he has the right attitude. He wants to play on our
side of the ball.

I just went to the Navy Hockey website and found that the schedules for the A
and B teams for 2000-2001 have been posted.
www.dahlgrenhallhrm.com/navyhockey
Last year I did not get to see a game, but this year the B team schedule and
I "mesh" much better, and I should be able to see at least 2 games. My son
was an equipment manager for the B team last year, and hopes to make the team
as a player this year. Either way, I still want to see a game. We saw a
couple of games the year before, on occasions when we were visiting USNA
before Ryan was inducted. They were so much fun to watch!!

Has anyone heard anything from Bravo YP Squadron today? Are they in New
York??

Before a crowd of 21,000+ at Navy/Marine Corps Stadium this afternoon,
the USA women's soccer team beat the Russian women's soccer team 7-1. (I
might mention that after the first USA score, a certain Sponsor Dad seated
next to me predicted we would win by 7-1 or 8-1.) At halftime, the USNA
Women's Soccer Coach, (and I apologize that I did not get her name), a former
member of the USA team, was awarded entry into the Soccer Hall of Fame, to
the cheers of the crowd.
According to the paper, she has hosted members of the team at her home
all this week. I hope some of your daughters got to meet them!

Bethlehem, Pa. -- The Patriot League named 42 Naval Academy student-athletes
to its 1999-2000 winter / spring sports Academic Honor Roll. The primary
purpose of the academic honor roll is to recognize those student-athletes
who are earning a varsity letter in an intercollegiate sport, and at the
same time, are excelling with their work in the classroom.
To be selected to the honor roll, the student-athlete must meet two
criteria. 1) Must earn a varsity letter in his / her sport; and 2) Must
have a 3.20 or higher grade point average during the academic semester which
coincides with his / her sport.
Athletes from 10 sports were eligible for the selection following the
academic semester. The sports included: women's swimming and diving, men's
and women's indoor track and field, men's and women's basketball, golf,
men's tennis, men's and women's outdoor track and field, and baseball.

NAVY'S CORNELL COMPETES AT OLYMPIC TRIALS

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Navy's Clint Cornell posted a time of 24.22 to finish
79th in the 50-meter freestyle at the U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials Monday
morning in Indianapolis, Ind.

Swimming just days after he was left with cuts and bruises from a motor-bike
accident, the senior from Dickson City, Pa., finished sixth in his
preliminary heat. The top-16 finishers advanced to Monday night's semifinal
round, which Cornell missed by less than a second (23.26).

"It was a fast race with not much time separating the top from the bottom,"
said Cornell. "I was shooting for a little faster time, but all things
considered I was pleased with the way I swam. I am a little sore from the
accident, but I felt fine while I was in the water.

"I couldn't think of a better way to start my senior year than by competing
at the trials."

Cornell, the Navy record holder in the 50-yard freestyle (20.35) will
captain the Navy swim team this winter.

NAVY FOOTBALL NOTES FROM PRACTICE 2; DAY 6

THOMPSON OUT FOR THE YEAR

The Mids suffered a blow this morning when backup nose guard Alan Thompson
was lost for the year with a broken right leg. Thompson fractured his tibia
and fibula.
"We will just move everybody up on the depth chart right now and then take
a look at where we might be able to move somebody, but we had moved Josh
Brindel in there already and we have Andy Zetts in there and we have Kevin
Schwind, a freshman in there, so we still have three guys in there that can
play. Alan was really making some progress and we really liked what he was
doing, so its just too bad that he got hurt, but it's like I was telling the
team its one of those things that you just work hard, keep moving your feet,
try to play the game the way its meant to be played and you just never know
when something like this can happen. The next guy's got to be ready to go."

LEPORE TO RETURN KICKS

Navy All-America candidate Chris Lepore may have another facet of the game
to put on his resume, as it appears he will be back deep with junior Rashad
Jamal when Temple kicks off for the first time in the season opener. Raheem
Lambert has seen some work returning kickoffs.

COMMENTS FROM NAVY HEAD COACH CHARLIE WEATHERBIE

"It was good to have a rain practice this morning. I thought we had some
good competition in the rain. I hated that a couple of guys got hurt. Alan
Thompson breaking his leg and a couple of guys hurting their shoulders,
Justin Jordan and Billy Hubbard. Justin was back out here this afternoon
and hopefully we can get Billy back out here. But there were a lot of good
things that took place this morning. It was good to kick the ball in the
rain, snap it, take center-quarterback exchange in the rain, and then this
afternoon I thought we had a good practice as far as the team stuff against
one another, seven-on-seven and the team third down situations. We have to
continue to improve every day. I wish the weather would get a little
hotter. I'm not sure we are getting the heat we need. It might be pretty
warm when we get ready to go to Georgia Tech or it might be pretty warm the
night we play Temple, you never know, but it has been unseasonably cool. I
don't know if you ever get used to the heat or not, I don't know, it's one
of those things that hopefully mentally it will help you to practice in it."

We understand that there's a short list of 6 individuals for the Head
Baseball Coach vacancy. Does anyone know if the names of those individuals
have been released or what the time frame is for naming Coach MacDonald's
successor? Baseball tryouts are scheduled to begin August 21.

NAVY FOOTBALL NOTES FROM PRACTICE 1; DAY 7

 MIDS TO SCRIMMAGE ON WEDNESDAY

Navy head coach Charlie Weatherbie will put his team through its first
full-scale scrimmage on Wednesday morning at 10 a.m. at Navy-Marine Corps
Memorial Stadium. The team will also scrimmage on Saturday at 12 noon.

COMMENTS FROM RUNNING BACK COACH SAMMY STEINMARK

"The kids have come back in great shape and are working really hard. We
have had our share of nicks and bruises so far, but they are catching on to
what we really need to get done as far as all of our blocking assignments
and becoming pass receivers, which we've really worked on, so their effort
has been outstanding so far and I am really pleased with them. With
two-a-days coming down to a close we can really starting honing in on what
we want to do game plan wise against Temple, which I think we are ahead of
schedule as far as blocking and our assignments go."

"The whole group of guys are all kind of bunched together. The most
experienced and the one playing the best right now is Josh Bock. We
finally
got Gene Reese back on the field and Terrence Coleman has been a little
beat
up, but they are trying to do the things we need to do so we can get to the
point where we can start competing against our competition."

"Rashad Jamal has done a lot better than I thought he would. Donnie Fricks
is real steady. He's just a good football player. I would probably say
our
biggest surprise so far is Tepper (Brad). Tepper was moved from
quarterback
and he missed a lot during the spring, but he's come out and showed that he
really has the tools to play at this position, now its just a matter of how
 fast he matures."

"Marlon Terrell has done really well. He's caught on real fast. It's hard
to be a fullback for a couple of years and then just move over there so he
has a ways to go compared to the rest of them as far as assignment wise."

"Tomorrow during the scrimmage I am going to let the guys turn it loose and
be able to go out and play, to rely on their instincts as football players
instead of thinking so much. We have done a lot of thinking and teaching
and
tomorrow I am going to turn them loose and see how they react without me in
 their back pocket all day."

COMMENTS FROM NAVY HEAD COACH CHARLIE WEATHERBIE

"We put the team through some situations this morning. We put them in a
goal line situation, with the offense having the ball on the six-yard line
and the defense having their back to the wall, I think the defense
responded
pretty well. Offensively, I'm not sure we got it in but once or twice in
the three or four times we tried to score with the first, second and third
offensive and defensive units. Then we put it on the one-yard line and
brought it out, as a emphasis of lets get a first down and then another
first down so we don't have to get in a tight punt situation and I think
those are the type of situations that you can put them in before a game
that
once they are in that situation in a game they are a lot more ready for it
having been familiarized with that situation."

"We are going to go to the stadium tomorrow and go through some similar
type
stuff. We are going to go through all types of situation, get the head sets
out so we can get back in the groove of doing that as coaches and try to
make it as much game type as possible, yet break it down situation by
situation as much as we can. We will do a lot of kicking game stuff where
we get a chance to get a lot of good kicking game video in the stadium and
do some live kick returns, live kick covers, and live punting situations.
Tomorrow is going to be a good day in the stadium. This afternoon we have
one more practice in shells and we will come out and continue to work on
the
fundamentals and the areas we have been working on every day."

"Cee Harris had a real good practice today at fullback. Defensively, it
looks like the defense is really starting to jell and come along with the
scheme. I am excited about the way a couple of the nose guards are
playing,
Zetts and Berger (Matt). They are doing some good things, and I think the
secondary is continuing to break on the ball real well. We are continuing
 to improve day by day."

"Brian Williams is our number one punter. He's been the most consistent so
far. We are still working with David Hills and Justin Willis on PAT/Field
Goal. Willis looks like right now he has been the most consistent. We are
going to chart tomorrow and Saturday and we will have a good feel on the
 kicking situation after Saturday."

Two Navy Gymnasts Garner Academic-All America Honors

ANNAPOLIS, Md. * Benjamin Gompf and Jeff Dean, members of the Naval Academy
men's gymnastics team, have been named 2000 All-America Scholar-Athletes by
the College Gymnastics Association. To be eligible for the award, each
gymnast had to attain at least a 3.50 grade point average in addition to
earning a minimum NCAA gymnastics score of 8.5 during the 1999-2000 academic
year.
Gomf, who graduated in the spring, and Dean, a junior majoring in systems
engineering, helped the men's squad to a national ranking of 11th overall
with a GPA of 3.002. Iowa captured its first national academic team title by
combining for a team GPA of 3.392.
"It has always been my philosophy to balance academics and athletics," Navy
gymnastics coach Dr. Sho Fukushima said. "It is even harder to earn the
award because of their military responsibilities. I really respect any
Academic All-American, especially one that comes from the Naval Academy."

COMMENTS FROM NAVY HEAD FOOTBALL COACH CHARLIE WEATHERBIE AFTER WEDNESDAY'S
 SCRIMMAGE

 Q. What did you see today in the scrimmage

"I saw the defense playing pretty well. I thought they did some good
things. I thought offensively we had way too many penalties, way too many
turnovers and didn't get the ball in the end zone very much. I thought the
defense did a good job of coming out here, running around, and making some
plays. I thought in the two-minute drill that the defense really found a
way to win in that situation. I thought we punted the ball fairly well
early in the practice, we didn't kick field goals as consistently as we
need
to. The snaps and the holds were good; we just didn't kick it like we need
to. We've got some improvement to make, but we also have two and a half
weeks to make it so we have a lot of time to work on it. We are going to
try and hone in on those first two teams on offense and defense. The third
team guys now won't be getting as many reps. Yesterday was our last
two-a-day practice and I thought everybody was a little bit tired, a little
bit sluggish, and that is to be expected. I don't mind them to be that way
at this time. Come Temple on Sept. 2 they need to be bouncy, they need to
have great legs, they need to feel like they have been rested and they are
ready to go and I believe they will be."

 Q. It's not unusual for the defense to be ahead of the offense at this
 point, is it?

 A. No it's not. You put them in these type of situations, backed up on the
one and coming out, on the 10-yard line and going in and you expect the
offense to score on the 10-yard line going in and you expect the defense to
stop them on the one-yard line coming out. You expect the two-minute
drill,
which we just put in yesterday, not to be successful offensively and to be
successful defensively. You would like to see some different things
happen,
but that's what took place and we can definitely get some great video to
 learning.

 Q. What is your biggest area of concern?

 A. I would say the kicking game right now. That's probably the biggest
area
of concern. PAT/FG would be number one, kickoffs and then punts in that
 order.

 Q. Are Willis and Hills still even at PAT/FG?

 A. I think Willis was a little better today it looked like. I have to go
back and take a look at the video. We timed them out here and we will get
the rest of it off video.

 Q. Were you disappointed in the way Broadwater threw the ball today?

 A. Not really. I didn't think we protected very well, which I think will
come along. It is kind of hard to throw it when you don't have time. We
definitely have to get better at protecting him. It's one thing to go out
and throw in seven-on-seven and it is another thing to go out and throw
with
 the whole team out there.

RIFLE TEAM WINS ATHLETIC DIRECTOR'S CUP

The rifle team won the fifth annual Naval Academy Athletic Director's Cup,
Director of Athletics Jack Lengyel announced today at the annual NAAA Awards
ceremony. The cup was started by Lengyel to reward the overall performance
of an athletic team in the categories of athletics, academics and
leadership.

The rifle team, under the direction of head coach Bill Kelly, posted a
perfect 15-0 record this year and finished fifth at the NCAA Championship
and won the MAC championship. George Adams was named First-Team All-America
in smallbore, while Adams, Luke Shank and Tran Lam were named Second-Team
All-America in air rifle. Bill Tolson was named Honorable Mention
All-America in smallbore. Jon Iadonisi, Josh Kelly, Shank, Adams and Lam
participated in the United States Olympic Trials.

"The rifle team had an outstanding year and they are very deserving of the
cup," said Lengyel. "They represented the Naval Academy in a first class
manner in Bancroft Hall, in the classroom and in competition."

Thank you to everyone who so quickly sent the information about JV
Football..I am trying to figure out just how to see some of them. We live
in California and will be attending Army-Navy and maybe one more game. I
guess we will just have to get there a day or two early to watch.

Our son is DE and has had a lot of "fun" so far with the team. He loves
any kind of football contact. Plebe Summer, they did not get to do too
much but now they are out there everyday and he is loving it. He said he
is earning those sore muscles, "big time'!

GO NAVY!!!!

Subject: Comments from Bruce Burnett's press conference

The following are the remarks from new head wrestling coach Bruce Burnett
from his press conference Friday afternoon.

Head Coach Bruce Burnett's Opening Remarks

"First of all, I would like to tell you all just how happy I am to be here.
It's quite an opportunity for me to be at an institution as steeped in
history like we are. I'm just happy to be a part of that. I feel privileged
to be a part of that. And hopefully we can get back on track to the way
wrestling was here in the past. That's our goal, to move ahead, to be the
best we can be and work with the leaders of this country. That's what I'm
really excited about doing. Putting together a good staff, a good wrestling
program, but at the same time working with young men that I know are going
to be future leaders in the country. I'm excited about that because I've had
the opportunity in the past to work with the very best at what they do. I
felt like this program was just an extension of that. I'm excited to be here
and if you have any questions I'd be happy to answer them.

What motivated you to become a college head coach?

Burnett: "There were four things that really interested me in the job. One,
purely the challenge of it. When I heard about the job a couple of people
that told me about the job actually said,'This is a great opportunity for
you. It's secure but you're going to have a hard time winning there.' My
comment very simply was, somebody's got to win, why can't Navy win? I said
are the kids hard workers? Obviously they are or they wouldn't be here. Are
they smart kids? Obviously or they wouldn't be here. And with those two
ingredients alone, I felt like coaching could make a difference. So the
challenge of that part of it.
The second thing, purely timing. I'd been at USA Wrestling as National coach
for eight years and been successful, won world championships, won more
medals at the Olympic Games in 1996 than any other country. So from that
standpoint what you tend to do as a coach when your successful, is you tend
to visit the things that make you successful. I wasn't bored. I'm not going
to say that. But what I'm saying is, it was time for change. There's a lot
of good coaches out there that might be able to bring something new to USA
Wrestling. At the same time, this job opened up. This was a great
opportunity. Purely timing gave me the opportunity to apply for this job. I
feel like this job, the support from the athletic department was good.
They're looking to improve the program, raise it to another level. I was
excited about that opportunity.
The third thing, purely the opportunity to work with the elite kids in this
country. Kids that I know that have the opportunity to be leaders in the
country. Actually, I think everybody has to have goals and dreams. And very
simply for me, it's to help each wrestler reach their full potential as an
athlete and as a person. To think that I have the opportunity to influence
people in a positive way that have the opportunity to lead this country,
that's exciting to me. It may sound a little old fashioned but that's my
style. That's what I believe and that's what I like.
The fourth thing, very simply the excitement of doing something new, a new
challenge. Don't get me wrong, coaching at the Olympics is pretty exciting.
But that happens every four years. Here, everyday I'm going to be able to
work with young men on a daily basis to help them succeed. That's exciting
to me. Rather than a long distance coaching relationship that Î have as the
National coach. I'll be able to influence them a little more, hopefully
positively."

How about the challenge of going out recruiting?

Burnett: "I'll be honest with you. I didn't like recruiting when I was at
Oklahoma State. I've been in the job at USA Wrestling where I've had these
elite athletes come to me. They're already motivated. I didn't have to go
tell them, or sell the program to them. I think it's going to take a special
and unique kid to successful here. I know those kids are our out there in
the country. I think all we really have to do is show them that the Naval
Academy is behind them. Show them they have the opportunity to achieve their
goals of being a NCAA champion, get a great education, further their
leadership skills and then continue on if they want to be World and Olympic
champions.
I think we're going to have an opportunity to give them that direction,
either through the Marine Corps or through the Navy programs. Right now Navy
has an Olympic Greco wrestler by the name of Steve Mays. I talked to the
Navy coach about how that happened. So I'm going to have a good working
relationship with the Marine Corps Elite Athlete program and the Navy. I'm
just going to have to be able to show these kids what the Naval Academy can
do for them. And there's a bunch. So I'm excited about that opportunity."

How are you going to handle the transition from freestyle wrestling back to
collegiate?

Burnett: "Here's what I know about wrestling. I started a resident program
at the Olympic training center, where very simply here was my concept; this
is going to be a Master's and Doctorate degree in freestyle wrestling. We
had a transition period of about three years where our best collegiate
wrestlers became our best senior wrestlers. So I had to close that gap so
that our guys just coming out of school can challenge for an Olympic spot.
Which would raise the level of competition here in the United States.
This is what I know. If you can take somebody down, in the sport of
wrestling, and get away from them you can win. In the sport of wrestling,
whether you're wrestling freestyle or collegiate wrestling, those are the
keys. I'll tell you a little secret about wrestling, you don't always have
to be the best athlete. You can take a mediocre athlete and make him real
good in the sport. By eliminating his mistakes and capitalizing on your
opponents mistakes, being in great shape, being the hammer instead of the
anvil and that's the attitude I'm going to take.
I coached to beat the top one percent. That's my program, that's my
philosophy and that's the very best. So everyday in the room, that's what
they're going to get. The technical side of it, I'll have no problem with
that. If college coaches have a problem on how to finish the single leg,
they call me. I feel kind of good about that. Because I've had the
opportunity to study wrestling for 10 years, the very best guys in the
world, I think that's going to help us here at the Naval Academy."

COMMENTS FROM NAVY HEAD FOOTBALL COACH CHARLIE WEATHERBIE FRIDAYıS PRACTICE

OPENING STATEMENT

"I thought we had a good practice today. It was upbeat. We were out here
for about two hours and 15 minutes and I thought we got a lot done. Weıve
got to continue to get these young guys used to the speed of the game and
what we want out of them more than anything. We are going to go to the
stadium tomorrow and have a scrimmage; it will be our last real good hitting
type scrimmage. Wednesday we will probably have a little live stuff too and
then next Friday we will end up with a mock scrimmage and try and take them
through a ton of situations.

Q. Was it good to practice in the rain today?

A. It doesnıt hurt to get a little moisture. We may have some for a game,
because weıve had a ton all summer so it doesnıt hurt to throw the ball in
this and have to hold onto the ball and move around on the grass as
defensive backs."

Q. Anything in particular you are going to look for tomorrow?

A. What we would like to do is really get a game type situation as much as
we can. Itıs kind of an introduction to Temple and get the first and
second offense and defense on the same sideline together as a team and
pulling together as a team and helping one another as a team."

Q. Is tomorrow a big day for Willis and Hills?

A. There is no doubt. We are going to have to find out if we can get a
field goal kicked from the 20-yard line going in. Weıve got to be automatic
from the 20-yard line on in the way we look at it so we are going to see
what we can get done tomorrow out on the game field. We will take a look at
a couple of the young guys probably if things arenıt going the way we think
they need to be going. We feel real good about Brian Williams being our
punter and Heath Sanders is snapping the ball real well on PAT/FG and we are
excited about that.

COMMENTS FROM SENIOR CORNERBACK DAVEDE ALEXANDER

Q. Are you pleased with where the secondary is at two weeks before the
opener?

A. "Definitely. The guys weıve got who are replacing Doff (Jamie
Doffermyre) and Gary (Lane) are coming to play. Everybody is revved up and
having fun. I donıt think there is any drop off from last year, as a matter
of fact, I feel better about this unit. We get a lot more excited during
practice, flying around and making plays. We saw that a lot during
two-a-days. The secondary was jumping around, having fun, breaking on
balls, trying to make big plays."

Q. Whatıs been the difference between Coach McMillian and Coach Norwood?

A. "They are like Ying and Yang, they go together but they are different.
Coach Norwood is more of a reserved person, he will pull you aside before he
gets into you and Coach Mac is that fired up, fire and brimstone type of
person. He tells it like it is and thatıs it. Being with Coach Mac and
with Coach Norwood it really doesnıt feel any different philosophy wise;
they are on the same page. For me as a senior it is kind of a nice
opportunity to come in with Coach Mac as a freshman on the JV team and go
out with Coach Mac as a senior."

Q. Have you been impressed with the young defensive backs?

A. "Definitely. Bush and Brazier are both good. Brazier has a real nice
backpedal and Bush really breaks on balls. They seem like they have a lot
of confidence, especially as freshman."

Q. Have you tried to take those two under your wing and show them the
ropes?

A. "Yeah, we show them whatıs going on and as corners and defensive backs
itıs already a tight knit family. In the meeting room we cut up a little
bit and have a little fun, get them to relax a little bit. Itıs a family
atmosphere."

Q. Coach McMillian is talking about playing some bump and run coverage.
Does that excite you?

A. "Oh yeah, any time you get the opportunity to challenge a receiver itıs
great, itıs exactly what you want. Somebody to say that we have the
confidence in you to go ahead and bump them up just shut that side down. I
really like that."

COMMENTS FROM NAVY HEAD FOOTBALL COACH CHARLIE WEATHERBIE
AFTER SATURDAYıS SCRIMMAGE

Q. What did you think of todayıs scrimmage?

A. Well, what we tried to do was make it as much game like as we possibly
could. We came out and had a regular pre-game warm-up and tried to keep on
a time schedule, we wanted to show the guys what it would be like today out
in the stadium. We tried to work some Temple stuff offensively and
defensively. I thought we got some good things out of it. I think there
are a lot of things that we will learn from the video and then I think we
have to continue to improve on our kicking game. I thought our punting game
was good until we started punting the ball from the 40-yard line going in.
I thought our kicking game improved as the scrimmage went. I thought we
kicked field goals better towards the end than we did early. We have to get
more consistent there. Overall I think we are coming along, we are two
weeks away, we still have some fine-tuning to do and its good we have two
weeks to do that.

Q. Is there any leader in the kicking game so far?

A. Today it looked like Justin Willis kicked the ball a little bit better
than David Hills did. We tried to work a couple of the freshman in there,
we wanted to see what they could do and maybe put a little bit of pressure
on Justin and David. Those two guys have got to make it to happen. They
are the guys. David Hills had a great spring, but just hasnıt had a real
good preseason thus far and I think its because he had a little bit of a
slight groin pull early and he started punching at the ball instead of
following through. When it gets down to it we are going to have to make a
decision two weeks from today, really before that, on whose going to be the
guy.

Q. Are you going to use only one?

A. There will be one that kicks and we will give him a chance for a game and
see how he does and if he does what heıs supposed to do we will keep him in
there, if not we will move it around. Thatıs whatıs great about having two
or three guys to work with, the competition is good.

Q. Will the winner of the job be the kickoff guy as well?

A. Yes. We will have to do that. We have used just one guy to kickoff
before like Shubzda but Iım not sure if we have one that is stronger than
the other at kicking off either. David Hills might be a little better
kickoff guy right now than Justin Willis but we have a ways to go yet and we
have a little time yet to get there so I think we will be there come Sept.2.

Q. How about the injury situation?

A. I think we will be all right. I donıt think anybody got seriously
injured today. This will be kind of the last real, tough, hard-hitting
practice we will have. We are still going to hit some but it will be all
controlled in a confined space. We will practice Monday-Friday with a
scrimmage at the stadium on Friday night (7 p.m.) and try to put them in
every possible situation we can think of and give them Saturday and Sunday
off. We will practice in full gear the following Monday and Tuesday, half
pads on Wednesday and Thursday and then be ready to go for the game on
Saturday, Sept. 2.

Q. As of right now, what are your biggest concerns?

A. Kicking is number one. PAT/Field Goals and kickoffs are probably my
number one concerns right now. Itıs going to be interesting to see how well
we do at the nose guard position. It will be interesting to see how well we
do at running back, with some new faces there. I think our offensive line
is very experienced and very talented. I think that on the defensive line we
have some real good players in Wimsatt and Wagoner up front. Our outside
linebackers have some experience in Shaka Martin, Justin Jordan and Rashad
Jones and we have some experience in the secondary with Davede Alexander and
Chris Lepore and some of those guys who have played back there in the
secondary. I think we have a chance to be pretty good if we continue to
improve and continue to pull all the loose ends together. It will be a good
test when Temple comes in here the first game of the season.

Q. How important is it to have five veterans on the offensive line?

A. I think thatıs big, because those guys have to communicate a lot and
have to know one another pretty well when you get a little different defense
maybe play after play and week after week and to be able to communicate and
get the right blocking assignments and right blocking schemes is important.
There is a lot involved there mentally.

Q. What did you think of the spiritedness of the scrimmage today. You had a
couple of scuffles in there?

A. You donıt want to get in a fight and get kicked out of a game. I think
its great to get excited and have some physical contact out here but like I
tell the players, you have to do it between the whistles. Itıs not after
the whistle. You have to make sure you are playing between the whistle.

Q. How is Chris Worthing progressing at wide receiver?

A. Heıs doing a good job, heıs improving. Heıs so far behind the eight
ball mentally more than anything. He hadnıt played in a long time and when
he did play he probably played eight-man football in the town of Inman,
Kansas. Small town in Kansas. Heıs come a long ways. We would have loved
to have him two springs ago, last fall and then this last spring. Heıs got
some ability.

Q. Are you pleased with the progress of Ed Malinowski as your backup?

A. Yeah, he threw a couple of balls today that I question. He threw and
interception that I didnıt think was good, but he understands what we are
trying to do and he has really had some good practices up to this point.
Edıs the number two guy.

Q. How about Craig Candeto?

A. Candeto has a chance to be a fine quarterback one-day. Heıs a freshman
that has to get in the fire a little bit.

Women's Collegiate Soccer
A look ahead at Navy women's soccer

For Immediate Release
Monday, Aug. 21, 2000
Women's Soccer Contact: Stacie Michaud (410) 293-4517 ext. 136

A Sneak Peek at the 2000 Navy Women's Soccer Team
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - With its first game of the season just days away (Friday
at George Mason, 4 p.m.), here is an up-close look at the 2000 Navy women's
soccer team, which includes a brief review of the '99 season.

Behind a 14-8 performance by the 1999 Navy women's soccer club, the
Midshipmen made their second-consecutive trip to the Patriot League
Championship game and won a share of the regular-season league title. The
Mids dominated the competition, collecting nine shutouts and nearly doubling
their opponents' goal production, 51-26. The accolades were there, as well,
as Navy's Justine Fisher became the first Midshipman to be revered the
Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year. With all the accolades,
records and wins, the Midshipmen and their coaching staff are still
searching for the missing piece of the puzzle which will lead them to the
2001 NCAA Women's Soccer Championship. The foundation has been set in its
infancy, a program just eight years old this fall. The talent, too, has
become synonymous with the words Navy women's soccer. The mentors -
Olympian Carin Gabarra and All-America Rob Blanck - and the skilled group of
Midshipmen who hunger for that league championship will need to blend
together for the opportunity to become the first Academy women's TEAM to
make a trip to an NCAA Tournament.

Eight starters return in Navy's quest for a league championship, including
1999 Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year Justine Fisher.
Additionally, one of the premier goalkeepers in the East senior captain
Sarah Wilson will anchor a team which held its Patriot League foes to just
two goals last season and no assists.
The following is a position-by-position outlook previewing the 2000 season.

Midfielders

The bulk of Navy's talent base comes from its core group of midfielders.
Since Navy lists just two true forwards on the team, the wealth of
midfielders is at a premium for the Mids.

Flank Midfielders

No name has become better known coming out of the midfield than Justine
Fisher. A junior hailing from Tucson, Ariz., Fisher can and has played
nearly every position on the field. In 1998, she garnered Patriot League
Rookie-of-the-Year recognition as a defender and guided the Mids to their
first Patriot League Regular-Season Championship. And just a year later,
she was dubbed the Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year after leading
the league in scoring with 16 goals as a midfielder. Fisher, the prime
target for defenders going into the season, will need to step up and become
the leader of the offense.

"We have designed a system to give Justine more attacking freedom and more
space for creativity," said Gabarra. "She has become a constant threat
offensively in every game, and continues to dominate defensively, as well."

Joining Fisher in the flank role is sophomore Nadia Sheikh. Snubbed by the
league last season in terms of postseason accolades, Sheikh made an
immediate impact as a rookie. She was Navy's second-leading scorer with 19
points on six goals and a team-high seven assists. With a year of Division
I experience, Sheikh is sure to shine in 2000.

"Nadia has settled nicely into the flank midfield role with her explosive
one-on-one ability and acceleration," said Gabarra. "She will generate many
goal-scoring chances for herself and her teammates."

Junior Melissa Rains is also among Navy's flank midfielders. She posted her
first-career goal in last season's opener against George Mason.

"Melissa can step into the flow of the game immediately, and is a wonderful
tactical organizer," said Gabarra. "She had a great spring in our new
system and we look for her to flourish."

Central Midfielders

The junior tandem of Vanessa Solon and Becky Murphy will lead Navy's group
of attacking midfielders. Both Second-Team All-Patriot League honorees a
year ago, the two may be reassigned new positions in the Mids' offensive
scheme, as both were used primarily as forwards last season. Solon is a
two-time Second-Team All-Patriot League player. She was a major force in
Navy's domination in league play, scoring all four of her goals against
Patriot League competition. Meanwhile, her ability to find the open player
is uncanny, posting six assists last season.

"Vanessa gives us a strong defensive and heading presence in the midfield,
as well as being an offensive threat," said Gabarra. Her touch on the ball
is outstanding and enables her to consistently get our attackers behind the
opposition's defense. On top of that, she is an tremendous finisher."

Murphy, who garnered Soccer Times.com National Player-of-the Week accolades
after scoring nine points against Holy Cross and Lehigh, led the Patriot
League in scoring (conference games only) with nine points on two goals and
five assists. Her growth was apparent by the end of the season and she will
be a key ingredient in Navy's offense this fall.

"Becky has progressed into an impact player for us," said Gabarra. "Her
defending continues to get better, as does her heading. She has been
dedicated to becoming a Division-I player, and will be a constant scoring
threat this season. She strikes the ball exceptionally well and is
dangerous on set pieces."

Maili Ordiz saw action in 19 contests a year ago, earning valuable minutes
and experience.
"Maili has great technical ability and tactical organization, and we are
looking forward to have her back healthy," said Gabarra. "We relied on her
many times last season and she was asked to perform in some clutch
situations."

If there is one new player who is most likely to shine, it is Amelia
Sheveland.
"Amelia's athleticism is as good as I've seen," said Gabarra. "She's
six-foot tall and is extremely quick and agile."

"We expect Amelia to be a personality player right away," said Gabarra.
"She has exceptional physical attributes and the front-runner mentality to
score goals. As soon as she feels comfortable in our system, we will give
her the creative freedom to attack."

Another player to keep an eye on in the central midfield role is Lauren
Pizzi, who saw action in five games as a rookie.

"Lauren had a fantastic spring season and gave our team an emotional boost
when she entered the game," said Gabarra. Her work rate and competitive
edge are unmatched and she has the potential to play increasing minutes this
fall."

Meanwhile, newcomer Samantha Faulkner is an up-and-coming player for the
Mids and could see some early minutes for Navy

"Sammy already has the technical skills and speed of play to step in with a
Division-I team," said Gabarra. "She will be an excellent play maker and
has the ability to control the tempo of the game."

Molly Harrington, has two years of experience under her belt as a midfielder
at the United States Military Academy. An exchange student for the fall
semester, Harrington will provide added depth for the Midshipmen.

Additionally, newcomers Jeanne Cameron, Susan Coelius-Keplinger, Quinn
Rinehart and Megan Weller will have the luxury of adapting to Navy's system
and the Division-I playing level.

Forwards

Navy has two solid returners at the forward role in junior Danielle La Salle
and sophomore Kara Hardebeck.

La Salle, who netted the second-most goals on the team last season with six,
has gained a great deal of experience over the last two years and will
provide an offensive spark for the Midshipmen. She scored in five games
last season, including a two-goal performance against Houston at the Nike
Aggieland Classic.

"Dani will flourish in our new style of play," said Gabarra. "She is
comfortable back to pressure, and does a great job of getting into the
seams. She has a great first touch and does well keeping our rhythm."

A native of Bellevue, Neb., Hardebeck missed the first six games last season
with a stress fracture in her back, however, her return brought dividends to
the Mids. She scored just one goal and added three assists, but her style
of play complements her teammates.

"Kara has become a great target player, and we look to use her feet to
generate our attack," said Gabarra. "She creates quality goal-scoring
chances for herself and the team, and is excellent at finishing."

Murphy, Sheikh, Sheveland and Solon may also see time at forward for the
Midshipmen. Both Solon and Murphy have two years of varsity playing
experience filling the forward role, and will likely alternate the between
central midfield and forward positions. Meanwhile, Sheveland, perhaps the
most athletic Navy newcomer, has enough of a versatile style of play, she,
too, could see time at forward.

Defenders

Defensively, Navy lost a key player in the graduation of Tara Refo, but
return three-time all-league defender Margaret Ewers. Ewers falls in the
footsteps of some of the great defensive players in Navy's young history,
including four-time First-Team All-Patriot League Nicole Aunapu, as well as
Refo. As the senior member of Navy's defense, Gabarra will look to Ewers to
provide the defensive stability to keep the competition at bay.
"Margaret will continue to be a top defender in the league and an impact
player in every game," said Gabarra. "She is a solid one-on-one defender,
but it's her attacking skills that make her so enjoyable to watch. She
loves to make constant explosive runs out of the back, both with and without
the ball. This combination makes her an extremely dangerous player."

Junior Heather Honnette stepped into a starting role a year ago and showed
her ability to control much of the defense.

"Heather is the foundation of our defense," said Gabarra. "She is a great
one-on-one defender, tenacious tackler, dominates in the air and is our
defensive organizer. She will be responsible for leading our defense and
maintaining our defensive shape."

After gaining a wealth of experience in just her rookie season, sophomore
Leslie Esher will likely play a key role in Navy's defensive system. Esher
played in 18 of the 22 games and earned three starting nods.

"Leslie has gained valuable experience and tactical training over the last
year and has begun to flourish in our system," said Gabarra. "Her
one-on-one defense is very good and she is still improving her team defense
and shape."

Also contributing to Navy's traditionally strong defensive unit are
newcomers Stacy Finley and Rebecca Gould.

"Stacy has great speed and strength, and her aggressive style should help
with the transition to Division-I soccer," said Gabarra. "She's extremely
competitive and has the mentality that will lift our level of play."

"Rebecca has the potential to become a solid defender, especially with her
work rate and dedication."

Three familiar faces will provide the efforts at defensive midfield for the
Mids. Senior Julie Faulkner anchors the position, having the most
experience and savvy. Faulkner, who was absent from the Academy one year,
returned last season and was a key ingredient to Navy's success. A sheer
competitor, she tumbles with the best of them and has excellent foot work.

"Julie works extremely hard in the defense to put pressure on the ball
immediately and organize any breakdowns," said Gabarra. "She is a great
ball winner and dominates the defense in the air. We rely on her effort to
keep our defensive shape."

Though Erin Kelly is listed as a junior, she really only has one year of
experience under her belt after suffering a torn ACL in her first-collegiate
game two years ago. Though she played in 19 games and started 13, Kelly
battled nagging injuries last fall and missed most of the spring. Navy
needs Kelly to be healthy come Aug. 25 when the Mids open at George Mason.

"Erin also has an incredible energy level in the defense," Gabarra said.
"She is capable of solving any defensive problem or counter attacks by
tactically slowing down the attack. She is also extremely adept with the
ball at her feet creating a great team rhythm and serving great one and two
touch balls."

In her second year, Annie Gates has quickly improved with a year of
Division-I experience. A starter in two contests a year ago, she scored
goals on her only two shots of the year.

"Annie flourished in the spring with the experience and defensive training,"
said Gabarra. "She has the potential to play key minutes this fall and help
the team offensively, as well as defensively."

Goalkeepers

Sarah Wilson, one of the premiere goalkeepers in the East, returns for her
senior season as the team captain. Wilson is a two-time all-league
performer and one of the finest keepers Navy has had in its program. In
just over two years time (played in just two games as a freshman), she owns
the school record in career shutouts (17.1) and career goals-against average
(0.83). She, too, also holds the single-season records in both categories
at Navy. Wilson gave up just two goals in league play last year and 26
overall. She also accounted for nearly six of Navy's nine shutouts en route
to a 1.09 overall GAA and 0.26 in league action.

"Sarah has consistently been one of the top goalkeepers in the league and on
our schedule," said Gabarra. "We expect her to finish off her senior year
in the same fashion. She has the potential to make the difference between
winning and losing big games, and we expect her to step up to the
challenge."

Kate Macfarlane enters her final year of competition, despite being a
sophomore academically. After transferring from Rutgers a year ago, she
filled the role of a solid backup for Wilson. Macfarlane played in 14
contests and posted a 1.44 GAA and recorded 3.1 shutouts.

"Kate's athleticism and a
