Dear all:
As a parent of a JV player I am of course starving for information on
the football squad. I am putting out a request for anyone who is fortunate to
attend the JV game Friday afternoon or get an account from their sons over
the phone, to please share with us unfortunate many that are not able to
follow our boys to the next level. After seeing all their games and
competitions, the last dozen years or so, it is so frustrating feeling so
separated at this wonderful point in their lives. Please contribute anything
you can, it will be so appreciated by many I'm certain.
                                                 Thank you very much,
                                                    Chris Stevens

Navy Men's Soccer Team to Host Navy Soccer Classic

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy men's soccer team will play host to the Navy
Soccer Classic at Dewey Field Friday and Sunday. Towson will square off
against Davidson in the opener on Friday at 5 p.m., while the Mids will take
on Long Island in the nightcap at 7:30 p.m.
"We have got four very good teams coming in this weekend and all four are
very equal," Navy head coach Greg Myers said. "Two of the teams have been
overseas this summer, so the competition should be very high."
Long Island posted a 6-9-2 record in 1999 and is led by senior defender Juan
Diego Chiavarini who was an all-conference and All-Northeastern Region
selection last year.
Navy posted an 11-5-2 overall record in 1999 and 5-1 mark in the Patriot
League. The Mids return seven starters off a team that earned a spot in the
Patriot League championship game last year. Navy is led by Patriot League
Offensive Player of the Year senior Michael Paisant, who scored seven goals
and tallied two assists in 1999.
On Sunday, Towson will play Long Island at 1 p.m., followed by the finale
pitting Navy against Davidson.

Women's Cross Country Begins Its 2000 Campaign At Appalachian State

ANNAPOLIS, Md.¯ The Navy women's cross country team kicks off its 2000
campaign Friday in Boone, N.C. at Appalachain State.
A predominately young team in 1999, the 2000 Midshipmen Cross Country team
returns with experience on its side. Navy head coach Karen Boyle will
feature five seniors on this year's squad, which helped guide the Mids to a
6-1 record last season.

Leading the way are seniors Sandra Smith, Amy Baxter and Melissa Foon.
Smith, one of Navy's top returning runners, looks to start the 2000 season
in similar fashion to last year. In Navy's season opener last fall against
American, George Washington and Richmond, she recorded a first-place finish.

Despite being injured most of last season, Baxter was voted team captain.
Baxter, now healthy, gives the Mids an immediate boost. As a sophomore, she
finished sixth out 200 runners at the 1998 ECAC Championship with a time of
18:06, a personal best.

"It speaks to Amy's true character being voted captain by her peers, after
missing last season because of injury," said Boyle of Baxter. "She is
intensely competitive, and this team is fortunate to have tremendous
leadership up front this year."

Foon, meanwhile, was also a strong competitor in 1999 for the Mids. She
recorded a second-place showing at the Navy Invitational, while posting her
only victory of the season when she took first place at Army. She had the
top time for the team with a mark of 18:08.9 at the Paul Short Invitational.

"Look for Melissa to continue at a record-breaking pace," said Boyle. "She
set the books on fire in indoor and outdoor track in the 3000 (9:34) and
5000 (17:03) meters. Her 9:34 was a provisional-qualifying mark for the NCAA
Championship."

Ingrid Peterson will also provide valuable senior leadership. She had a
solid season, helping the Mids to victory in the season opener with an
11th-place finish.

Coach Boyle had a group of freshmen step up and contribute in 1999. Lisa
Procaccini, Maureen Carr and Clarice Dawson all made significant gains
throughout the season.

Procaccini had a strong first season for the Mids, posting an 18:19.6 at the
NCAA/District II Championship ¯ Navy's fourth-best time of the season. She
made an impression in the first meet of the season, finishing in third
place.

Carr also made an impact early. She took second place at the season opener,
completing the USNA Course with a time of 19:20.5. Carr's best time of the
season came at the NCAA/District II Championship, when she turned in a time
of 18:53.7

Five freshmen¯Sara Waters, Lily Thomas, Stephanie Patterson, Abby Wilder and
Colleen Maloney¯look impressive.

"They (the freshmen) were all top competitors in their respective states and
will have an immediate impact," said Boyle.

Navy will play host to three home meets this season. While the Mids open the
season at Appalachian State, they return home to play host to Maryland,
American and UMBC in the Navy Invitational.

Navy remains at home the following week when it takes on George Mason.

The Mids face Army October 21, at the USNA Course before wrapping up the
regular season at the Heptagonal Championship.

coach Karen Boyle. "I wanted them to run even splits and race the last
mile."
The Mids had a couple of freshmen make their mark in their first collegiate
competition. Stephanie Patterson and Abby Wilder were among the top-seven
finishers. Patterson came in 21st with a time of 19:07.80. Wilder took 36th
with a time of 19:34.90.
Sophomore Lisa Procaccini came in 25th, while senior Sandra Smith finished
35th.
"Our second goal was to have a one-minute split between the top seven
runners and a 30-second split between 1 and 5," said Boyle. "We accomplished
that having runners 2-7 running a one-minute split. Running Melissa Foon out
front was a bonus. She kept the point total low."
South Florida, a team that finished 26th at last year's NCAA Championship,
took first place with 42 points. Wake Forest finished in second with 72
points. Navy (80 points) edged out Florida State (81 points) for third
place. Appalachian State rounded out the top five with 164 points. Amy
Pleckaitis of Florida State won the event with a time of 18:10.30.

Mids Drop 2-1 Decision at Cal Soccer Invitational

BERKELEY, Calif. (Sept. 1) - After playing nearly 55 minutes with the score
tied at 1-1 in the first matchup of the day at the Sixth-Annual Cal
Invitational, the Navy women's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to San
Diego State in the 84th minute. Navy dropped to 1-2, while the Aztecs
improved to 2-1 in the early season.

Junior midfielder Nicole Findley got San Diego State on the board early,
taking a breakaway shot that sailed past All-Patriot League senior
goalkeeper Sarah Wilson (Moon Township, Pa.) two minutes into the contest on
a blustery afternoon in Berkeley, Calif. Navy knotted the score at one
apiece when junior Erin Kelly (East Brunswick, N.J.) found rookie sensation
Amelia Sheveland (Farmers Branch, Texas) who beat SDSU goalkeeper Linnea
Quinones off the line in the 18th minute.

From 17:23 until just six minutes and 51 seconds remaining in the game, the
contest would be up for grabs. It was junior middie Fay deLeon who fired in
the Aztec game winner from 25 yards out, yielding Navy's search for its
second win of the season.

While Wilson collected five saves on the afternoon for the Midshipmen,
Quinones and Erin Haentjens shared the cage duties for San Diego State,
fending off two Navy shots. The Aztecs got off 12 shots, while Navy was held
to just seven.

The Midshipmen return to action Sunday evening when they face host
California at 7 p.m. Eastern.

Navy Men's Soccer Scores 5-0 Win in Season Opener

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy men's soccer team pounded Long Island 5-0 in its
season opener Friday night at Dewey Field on the first day of the Navy
Soccer Classic.
Junior Brye Gerhardt scored two goals and tallied an assist, while senior
Michael Paisant tallied three assists to lead the Mids against the
Blackbirds. Navy keeper Brian Steckroth saved three shots in 78 minutes of
action before being replaced by John Craighill.
"This was a great opening win for us," Navy head coach Greg Myers said. "We
played well all over the field, and we had a lot of game experience because
of the trip to Germany we took this summer. We got a lot of guys in the game
and if a coach had to pick a way to open the season, it would be just like
this."
Dan Neverosky opened the scoring for Navy (1-0) when he netted a goal from
five yards out off a Paisant assist to give the Mids a 1-0 lead. At the
23:36 mark, Gerhardt netted his first goal of the game as Dan Montgomery and
Neverosky were credited with the double-assist.
Sophomore Mike Taylor added to the Mids' lead when he fired a shot past Long
Island keeper Orville Jackson off a pass from Paisant, giving Navy a 3-0
advantage at the half.
Twelve minutes into the second half, Gerhart scored his second goal of the
contest off an assist from Paisant and Neverosky. Sophomore Nathan Scott
capped the scoring for Navy with his first collegiate goal off an assist
from Joe Hembree.
Navy outshot Long Island (0-1) 16-7 in the match.
"It didn't seem like we had the second team out there later in the game,"
Paisant said. "They did a great job and did not miss a beat out there. This
was a team effort, and we played with constant pressure."
In the opening game of the Navy Classic, Davidson's Ikenna Myers scored from
22 yards out off an assist from Jeremy Kilburn at the 70:24 mark of the
game, giving the Wildcats a 1-0 victory over Towson.
On Sunday, Towson will play Long Island at 1 p.m., followed by the finale,
pitting Navy against Davidson.

NAVY WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL
Chesapeake Classic
Navy def. Robert Morris, 3-2 (15-7, 15-7, 11-15, 9-15, 18-16)
Navy def. Manhattan, 3-0 (15-11, 15-8, 15-12)

NAVY OPENS SEASON WITH PAIR OF VICTORIES

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy volleyball team opened its 2000 season with a
pair of victories at Macdonough Hall in day one action at the Chesapeake
Classic. The Mids began the season by surviving a five-game match against
Robert Morris, 15-7, 15-7, 11-15, 9-15, 18-16, followed by a three-game
sweep of Manhattan, 15-11, 15-8, 15-12.

In the opening match, the Midshipmen seemed to be in control of the match
after the first two games, but allowed the Colonials to gain momentum by
winning games three and four. Navy trailed for most of the decisive fifth
game and had to fight off three match points from Robert Morris before
Kristin Davidson (So., Lexington Park, Md.) and Erica McElroy (So.,
Henderson, Nev.) combined on a block for the final point of the match.
Erin Musser (Sr., Industry, Pa.) led the Mid offense with 14 kills, with
McElroy, Davidson and Megan O'Connell (Sr., Beaverdam, Va.) all adding nine
kills. Balance was also the key defensively for the Mids as five players
recorded 10 or more digs. Melissa Coombes (Sr., Los Altos, Calif.) led the
defense with 15 kills, with McElroy and Jessica Van Norman (So., Oakland,
Calif.) both contributing 14 apiece.
"We gained a lot of confidence with this match," said Navy head coach Mike
Schwob. "They were in the NCAA Tournament last year and have almost
everyone back from that squad."

In the second match, Navy again won the first two games before allowing a
late lapse in game three. After taking a 9-6 lead, the Mids found
themselves tied at both 9-9 and 11-11. Navy quickly reeled off four
straight points to take a 14-11 lea before winning, 15-12.
Davidson and McElroy led the Navy offense with 13 and 10 kills,
respectively, while Coombes once again led the defense with 13 digs.
"It was important for us to close out the match in three games," said
Schwob. "After we won the second game we were all thinking about the first
match. Even though we were tired, we stayed focused and didn't make the
same mistakes earlier in the evening."

While balance was the key to both victories, Schwob singled out Van Norman,
Coombes and Davidson as helping with the victories.
"Jessica did a nice job of distributing the ball to different people and
kept everyone in the action. Melissa helped us out a great deal
defensively, but also started us on a number of nice runs in both matches
with her serving. Kristin, after not playing volleyball for two years,
really impressed me with both her offense and defense tonight. Her and
Megan O'Connell really add new dimensions to our team and they make a nice
middle combination for us.

Action at the Chesapeake Classic will continue Saturday with three matches
at Macdonough Hall. Navy will open the day by facing Howard at 10 a.m,
Howard will take on Wagner at 1 p.m., and Navy will play Wagner at 3 p.m. in
the final match of the tournament. Later Saturday night, the Mids will play
host to perennial national-power Long Beach State in an 8 p.m. match at
Macdonough.

Schedule for Saturday
Navy vs. Howard - 10 a.m.
Howard vs. Wagner - 1 p.m.
Navy vs. Wagner - 3 p.m.

Navy vs. #2 Long Beach State - 8 p.m.

NAVY IMPROVES RECORD TO 4-1

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy volleyball team improved its record to 4-1 on the
young season with a pair of five-game victories at the Chesapeake Classic at
Macdonough Hall.

The Mids began Saturday with a 15-13, 14-16, 5-15, 15-6, 15-5, victory over
Howard. After winning the opening game, Navy lost a 12-4 lead in game two
and ended up dropping the game, 16-14. Navy rallied after losing game three
to take the match. Navy's serve was the key to the victory as the
Midshipmen totaled 18 service aces in the match, including six from Erica
McElroy (So., Henderson, Nev.), five from Melissa Coombes (Sr., Los Altos,
Calif.) and four from Rachel Benton (Sr., Severna Park, Md.). Erin Musser
(Sr., Industry, Pa.) and Kristin Davidson (So., Lexington Park, Md.) keyed
the Navy offensive attack with 11 kills, apiece, while Coombes led all
players in the match with 18 digs.

In the second game of the day, Wagner swept Howard, 15-10, 15-11, 15-11.
Beth Hayes and Natosha Davis each had eight kills for Wagner to lead all
attackers.

Navy then returned to the court again and had to rally to win yet another
five-game thriller, this time against Wagner. After dropping game one,
15-11, Navy took the next two games by scores of 15-11 and 15-6. Wagner
held off a late Navy rally to win game four, 15-12, and force Navy into its
third five-game match in less than 24 hours. The Mids prevailed in the
rally-scoring game, 15-9. Jessica VanNorman (So., Oakland, Calif.) had 19
digs and added 37 assists in the game for Navy, while Musser and McElroy led
all attackers with 15 and 14 kills, respectively.

"With such a young team, you are going to have these peaks and valleys in
their consistency," said Navy head coach Mike Schwob. "We served very well
in the Howard match and I think we were a little fatigued in against Wagner.
I am very happy with the fact that we have been able to not only experience
three five-game matches in our first four contests, but prevail in each of
them. "

Less than three hours after completing their victory over Wagner, the
Midshipmen returned to the court to take on the No. 2 ranked Long Beach
State 49ers. The Beach defeated the Mids in three games, 15-4, 15-0, 15-9.

"While I am never content with a loss, I feel we have a lot to be proud of
the way we played against Long Beach State," said Schwob. "We have seen a
lot of volleyball in our first two days, but we played with a lot of fire
and didn't back down from them. I was very impressed with the run we had in
game three. We showed ourselves that we are capable of doing a lot of good
things against one of the best teams in the country."

According to Schwob, there were plenty of players who deserved credit for
the 4-1 record of the Mids, starting with VanNorman.
"Jessica continues to do a good job of distributing the ball around and
running the offense well. We have had great offensive balance all weekend
long.
"I have also been pleased with the play of Kristin Davidson and Erin Musser,
especially considering this was their first action on the collegiate level.
They both played very well this weekend.

"On the whole, this was a very positive weekend for the entire team."

Navy will have little time to rest as it will play host to Niagara at 1 p.m.
on Monday and to Towson at 7 p.m. on Tuesday. Both matches will be held in
Macdonough Hall."

Iona scored the final two goals on the contest as Navy captured the victory.

Mids Win Navy Labor Day Water Polo Tournament

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The 18th-ranked Navy water polo team captured the 2000 Navy
Labor Day Water Polo Tournament championship with a 12-8 victory over
16th-ranked Queens College Sunday afternoon. The Mids defeated 10th-ranked
Massachusetts 3-2 in the semifinals earlier in the morning to advance to the
title game.

"Anytime you can beat UMass and comeback and beat Queens, that is a step in
the right direction," Navy assistant coach Carl Salyer said. "Those are
teams we have to beat in order to get to NCAA's. We have to continue to
improve. Right now, we're in the driver's seat."
Navy got off to a slow start in the first quarter against Queens, falling
behind 3-2. Team captain Sean Foster nailed a penalty shot with 3:31 left in
the second quarter to tie the match, 4-4. Junior Jason Duffie gave Navy a
5-4 advantage at the 2:46 mark of the quarter, and the Mids never looked
back, as Navy took a 6-5 lead at the half.

The Mids poured it on in the third quarter, scoring the first five goals of
the stanza, two by freshman Joe Donahue, to take a 11-5 lead.

Junior Brendan Naeve led the Mids with four goals in the contest, while
Donahue added three.
"Sean Foster did a great job as team captain, leading his team to victory,"
Salyer said. "He did a good job on defense shutting down Queens' best
player."

With the scored tied 1-1 against UMass in the fourth quarter, junior Barry
Shaw scored after winning a battle for the ball with the Minutemen goalie
and put the ball in the open cage, giving Navy a 2-1 lead. UMass tied the
game on a power play with 2:21 remaining in the match.
However, with eight seconds left and the score tied, Naeve took a pass from
Foster on a breakaway to score the game-winning goal for the Mids.

Navy returns to action on September 15 when the Mids travel to LaVerne and
Claremont, Calif. to face off against LaVerne, Claremont, and Air Force.

Hi sports fans

Can someone please give this Mom a brief description of what exactly
water polo is? I have visions of horses in the water and I am pretty
sure that is probably wrong.

Thanks
Linda

NAVY WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL
Navy def. Niagara, 3-0 (15-6, 15-11, 15-5)

NAVY SWEEPS NIAGARA

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy volleyball team continue its strong early season
play by completing a three-game sweep of Niagara, 15-6, 15-11, 15-5, Monday
afternoon at Macdonough Hall. The victory upped the Mids record to 5-1 on
the season, while Niagara fell to 1-3.

In the opening game against the Purple Eagles, six different Mids had at
least two kills as Navy totaled 17 kills and only three errors on 44
attempts, a team hitting percentage of .318. Erin Musser (Sr., Industry,
Pa.) led the Navy attack with five kills and no errors on nine attempts.
The Navy defense was strong, as well, limiting Niagara to a .019 hitting
percentage.

Navy survived a late Niagara rally in the second game, eventually prevailing
15-11. The Mids outhit the Purple Eagles in that game, .125-.018. In game
three, Navy jumped out to an early lead and went on to a 15-5 win to
complete its second sweep of the season.

Navy had a hitting percentage of .208 on the afternoon, with Megan O'Connell
(Sr., Beaverdam, Va.) Musser and Kristin Davidson (So., Lexington Park, Md.)
all hitting over .300 in the match. The Navy defense totaled 10 block
assists and limited Niagara to a (-).007 hitting percentage, a season low by
a Navy opponent.

Musser led all attackers with 11 kills and 14 digs in the match, while
Davidson had 10 kills and four blocks. Erica McElroy (So., Henderson, Nev.)
and Melissa Coombes (Sr., Los Altos, Calif.) had 12 and 11 digs,
respectively, with Coombes adding three service aces. Musser has now
recorded a double-double in kills and digs in four of Navy's six matches.
For Davidson, it was the third time in six matches she has recorded 10 or
more kills. Monday also marked the fourth time this season Coombes has had
three or more aces in a match.

Krista Watterson and Tricia Traczyk each had eight kills to lead the Purple
Eagles, with Traczyk adding 11 digs.

"I was very happy with the way we played today," said Navy head coach Mike
Schwob. "We are getting great production from a lot of people, especially
the new players (Musser and Davidson). Jessica VanNorman (So., Oakland,
Calif.) is doing a great job of running the offense. She is feeling more
comfortable setting everyone with each match we play."

Navy will take to the court Tuesday night when the Mids play host to Towson
in a 7 p.m. match at Macdonough Hall.

Schott Blows Navy's Shot At Victory Over Cal

BERKELEY, Calif. - Sophomore forward Laura Schott's goal just minutes
into the second half of Sunday's Cal Invitational contest versus Navy,
led the Bears women's soccer team to its third victory of the season,
 defeating the Midshipmen, 1-0.

The Mids faced the Bears just two days after Cal set a school record,
defeating 25th-ranked James Madison by the score of 12-0 in first-round
action of the Cal Invitational. While the Mids dropped a 2-1 decision
to San Diego State Friday, Navy was primed to play Cal on its home field
 Sunday afternoon.

Navy held Cal scoreless the first half, as the two teams went into
halftime looking for a way to break the other's defense. However,
Schott, who scored her fifth goal of the tournament, fired in a shot
past Navy goalkeeper Sarah Wilson (Sr., Moon Township, Pa.), hitting the
back of the net by way of the far post. Schott's game-winning goal came
at the 48:03 mark in the game, giving Navy ample time to rally. But the
Cal defense stifled the Mids, allowing Navy just five shots on the
afternoon, three on goal. Meanwhile, Cal took 15 shots with Wilson
 warding off six shots.

"While we take two losses away from this trip, we gained a great deal
of experience against two extremely talented teams in Cal and San Diego
State," said head coach Carin Gabarra. "We also learned more about our
team and what we need to do over the next few months to put us in
position to win the Patriot League Championship."

Navy returns to action next weekend when it plays host to the Navy
Invitational. The Mids face Central Florida at 7 p.m. Friday night and
follow up with a 12-noon contest against Washington State Sunday.

Hi Linda & Sports fans,

I loved your description of what you thought water polo might be. I've never
actually seen it in person; only on TV, so I may not be the best source of
info. But we have a friend who was an alternate on the U.S. Olympic team, so
we've heard many stories. It's a pretty rough game from what he tells us!

Water polo is set up with a goal at each end of the pool. The goals are long
rectangular frames with a net that comes about 3 feet out of the water. The
ball resembles a volleyball. The players can pass the ball, carry it or
dribble it (swim with arms & head held high with ball floating between their
arms). I think they can only use one hand to carry it. The player with the
ball can be held, tackled or ducked until the ball is released. But you
cannot do that to any player that doesn't have the ball. Apparently the
referees have a hard time seeing some of the tackling etc. that goes on
because most of it is under the water. It requires a lot of stamina and
strength as the players may not walk or stand on the bottom of the pool while
the ball is in play.

I hope this helps you picture it. But I still like the picture of horses
running around in the pool!

Hi,

We just returned from parents weekend and the Navy Water Polo
Tournament. I have watched polo for 8 years and I still have a hard time
following the fouls, but I think I can give some details.

Water Polo started in England in the late 1800's and was first played in
the 1900 Olympics. It is certainly a game of strength and endurance and is
played in a 30 by 20 meter pool which has a minimum depth of 7 ft all over.
Each team consists of 6 field players and a goalie. Only the goalie can
handle the ball with both hands. All other players must catch and pass the
ball with one hand . Each team advances the ball down the pool and attempts
to shot the ball into the goal to score a point. Each goal cage is similar
to soccer or hockey only they float on the water.

Navy plays four 7 minute quarters. Each quarter starts by dropping the
ball at the half court and the players sprint for it. Each team has 35
seconds to take a shot or score before the ball is turned over to the other
team. After a goal, players line up on either side of the half court line
and the team scored upon places the ball in play by passing it to a
teammate. Remember, both teams are not touching the bottom of the pool, so
all the action, sprinting, guarding the ball, trying to steal the ball,
blocking the shots, taking the shot, is done treading water. It is a very
tuff sport.

There are two referees who blow their whistles to indicate minor and
major fouls. I have a hard time with these. Some fouls require a player to
just back off another player, others require a 20 second penalty away from
play. (Like hockey.) There is also a 4 meter free shot (like in basketball)
for a major foul.

Navy has a strong team this year and did win the tournament! It was
exciting to see and certainly has more of an impact when you have someone in
there playing. The team will be traveling out to California in two weeks and
will have the opportunity to play with the best of the best. They play in
outside pools with guys who have played water polo since they were little.

Hope this gives a little more insight. We sure had a wonderful
weekend. Thanks for asking - most people don't know about water polo unless
you have someone involved or know someone who has played. During the last
Olympics, they televised some games at 2am. - not a real popular event. We
have another son at Boston College that also plays, so it has been great for
our guys.

SUCCESSFUL FIRST WEEKEND FOR NAVY SAILING TEAMS

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Navy's intercollegiate and offshore sailing teams opened
their 2000 fall seasons this past weekend with both teams involved in
several different races.

The intercollegiate team sent a trio of boats to the Kings Point Laser Open
in Kings Point, N.Y. Rainy weather allowed just one race to be held on the
weekend, with Justin Smith finishing 11th, Travis Weber placing 12th and
Doug Morea finishing 19th. At the Harry Anderson Regatta in New Haven,
Conn., Navy placed seventh in a field of 21 with a total of 134 points. In
the 'A' division, Navy's Parker Garrett and Dave Fassel tied for fifth place
with 58 points, while in the 'B' division Troy Tracaccar and Lindsay Bartel
placed 10th with 76 points.

The offshore team sent one boat to the Stamford Vineyard Race and entered
six boats in the Annapolis Race Week competitions. Jess Hottenstein
skippered Swift to a third-place class and overall finish at the Race to the
Vineyard's, completing the 238-mile race in a corrected time of 34:29:48.
Hottenstein and his crew earned the Corinthian Trophy as the boat with the
best corrected time on the return leg of the race.

Light wind conditions hampered Annapolis Race Week, as only two of the three
scheduled races were completed. In the PHRF class, Chris Fisher's Dauntless
led the Navy entries with a sixth-place finish. Other Navy finishers
included John Walsh commanding Frolic (eighth), Ryan Hastings on Challenger
(16th), Kyle Buchina on Bold (17th), Pete Firenze and Intrepid (19th) and
Brett Lefever on Fearless (22nd).

Both teams will be back in action this coming weekend. The intercollegiate
team will send boats to the Pine Trophy Race (New London, Conn.), the Riley
Cup (Norfolk, Va.) and the Match Race (Hoboken, N.J.), with Navy's women's
team participating in a race at Old Dominion. The offshore team will
compete at the Riley Cup and at the Cedar Point Overnight Race.

Mids Open Patriot League Play Against Colgate

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy men's soccer team will open Patriot League play on
Wednesday at 7 p.m., by playing host to the Colgate Red Raiders at Dewey
Field.
"We know Colgate is a young team, and they will come down here with an
incredible amount of enthusiasm," Navy head coach Greg Myers said. "It is a
vital game for us and for them. The world's not over if we don't win it, but
we put ourselves in a hole if we don't."
Navy (1-0-1) is coming off a 3-3 (2OT) tie against Davidson Sunday in the
championship game of the Navy Soccer Classic on the opening weekend of play
for the Mids. The Mids were awarded the tournament championship due to goal
differential in the two games.
In the season opener Friday, Navy pounded Long Island 5-0 behind two Brye
Gerhardt goals and three assist by senior Michael Paisant, who was named the
tournament MVP.
Colgate (0-2) dropped its first two games of the regular season this weekend
at the Rider Invitational in Lawrenceville, N.J. On Saturday, the Red
Raiders fell to Philadelphia University, 6-2, while losing to Northeastern,
3-2 on Sunday.
Last season in Hamilton, N.Y., Navy scored a 3-1 victory over Colgate behind
Paisant's game-winning goal.

NAVY WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL
Towson def. Navy, 3-1 (15-3, 14-16, 15-13, 15-12)

NAVY FALLS TO TOWSON

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy volleyball team lost a four-game match to Towson,
15-3, 14-16, 15-13, 15-12, Tuesday night at Macdonough Hall. The loss
dropped Navy's record to 5-2, while Towson improved to 2-2.

The Tigers controlled game one, outhitting the Midshipmen, .265-.023. In
the second game, Navy jumped out to an early lead of 9-4 before Towson
scored nine consecutive points to take a 13-9 advantage and eventually lead,
14-11. After a Tiger ball-handling error made the score 14-12, Melissa
Coombes (Sr., Los Altos, Calif.) entered the contest and tied the game by
serving back-to-back aces. Towson regained the serve but a blocking error
gave it back to the Mids. Erin Musser (Sr., Industry, Pa.) and Rachel
Benton (Sr., Severna Park, Md.) combined for a block to give Navy a 15-14
lead, and the Mids won the game on the next serve when a blocking error was
called on the Tigers.

Navy quickly jumped in front in game three, taking leads of 5-1, 8-3 and
12-8. Towson would tie the score at 12-12 and would go on to win the game,
15-13. In game four, it was Navy's turn to rally, coming back from deficits
of 4-0 and 8-3 to take an 11-8 advantage. Towson would regroup to tie the
score at 11-11 and win the game by the score of 15-12.

"There were many momentum shifts throughout the match," said Navy head coach
Mike Schwob. "It seemed like an uphill battle throughout the match. Even
when we had the lead our offense just wasn't clicking tonight as it was this
past weekend."

Towson outhit and outdug Navy, .216-.139 and 85-72, respectively. Navy had
12 total blocks in the match, while Towson had 10.

Individually, Kristin Davidson (So., Lexington Park, Md.) led Navy with 13
kills and a .393 hitting percentage in the match. Davidson and Megan
O'Connell (Sr., Beaverdam, Va.) each had five block assists in the contest,
Erin Musser recorded her fifth double-double of the season with 11 kills and
10 digs. Erica McElroy (So., Henderson, Nev.) led all players with a
season-high 19 digs.

"We really received a boost throughout the match from Julia Floraday," said
Schwob. Floraday (Jr., Villa Park, Ill.) entered the match in the second
game and finished the night with 11 digs and one ace. "She brought lots of
energy to the team. Another spark for us tonight came from when (setter)
Alison Jacobs (Fr., Perry, Mich.) entered the match (in game four). She did
a really nice job running the offense."

Towson's Lindsey Rattet led all players with 20 kills on the night. Five
Tigers recorded 10 or more digs in the match, led by 17 from Jordann
Tomasek."

Navy will be in action this weekend at the Penn State Invitational.

a pair of contests to preseason top-25 teams San Diego State (2-1) and
California (1-0). Despite walking away from the Cal Invitational with two
losses, the Midshipmen were able to take away valuable experience.

"I always feel like to be the best, you have to play the best," said head
coach Carin Gabarra. "By playing teams like San Diego State and California,
it gives our team a preview of what it would play against in postseason
action - and that's what our goal is right now. We are looking to work
ourselves into a position of winning the Patriot League Tournament a
receiving an NCAA Tournament bid."

Navy's one goal of the weekend game at the feet of freshman Amelia
Sheveland. The rookie hailing from Farmers Branch, Texas, leads Navy in
scoring with six points on two goals and two assists.

"We are really excited about Amelia," said Gabarra. "Her talents have
really been untapped and its exciting to see her come out and play each day.
She continues to make progress and I think she'll be a key in our Patriot
League season."

Meanwhile, it marks the first time in a year that Navy's leading scorer
hasn't been Justine Fisher. The junior sensation, who was named Patriot
League Rookie of the Year and followed up with Patriot League Offensive
Player of the Year, led the Mids with 16 goals and six assists last fall.
Fisher, though, isn't far behind fellow midfielder Sheveland. She scored
two of Navy's goals in its victory over Virginia Commonwealth Aug. 27 and is
second on the team with four points.

"Justine is a constant threat offensively and it's no secret that she
possesses the ability to score nearly every time she touches the ball," said
Gabarra. "She is a target and the teams we've faced have constantly marked
her."

While there's no doubt San Diego State and Berkeley provided the Mids with
great competition last week, the Navy Soccer Invitational field is filled
with plenty of powerhouses in its ownright.

Navy opens play Friday against its third-consecutive 1999 NCAA Tournament
opponent in the form of Central Florida. The Golden Knights put together a
16-6-1 record last year, including a 8-0-1 mark in the Trans America
Athletic Conference en route to making an appearance in last year's NCAA
Tournament. In just her second season, head coach Amanda Cromwell led
Central Florida to a 1-0 first-round NCAA tourney victory over Furman who
owned a mark of 20-2 before losing to North Carolina, 8-0, in the second
round. The Golden Knights return 20 letterwinners from a year ago,
including eight starters. Like Navy, Central Florida has played a tough
schedule, losing three of its first four contests to 10th-ranked Texas A&M
(5-0), Texas (4-0) and Florida International (4-1). It is coming off an
11-0 victory over Alabama A&M in which junior striker Michelle Anderson
recorded four goals and an assist, while junior middie Christie Martell
posted three goals and two assists.

The Midshipmen will meet Washington State Sunday at noon. The Cougars are
led by third-year coach Dan Tobias who guided them to a 7-12 mark last
season. Washington State returns eight starters from last year's squad,
including leading scorer Deka DeWitt. Last year, DeWitt posted 10 goals and
eight assists en route to earning Second-Team All-Pac-10 recognition. The
senior forward has scored one goal and added an assist in the Cougars' two
contests to date. Washington State opened the season with a 3-2
double-overtime victory over Utah, while dropping a 3-0 contest to Brigham
Young on Labor Day.

East Carolina and Georgetown will not face the Midshipmen, however, will
play neutral site contests this weekend. East Carolina, who posted an
11-5-1 mark in '99 and is 1-1 this season, will meet Washington State Friday
afternoon at 3 p.m. Meanwhile, Georgetown will meet up with Central Florida
Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. The Hoyas are 1-3 entering the tournament,
dropping their last two contests, William & Mary (6-0) and Furman (4-3).

Mids Open '00-01 Season By Playing Host to the Navy Fall Golf Invitational

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy golf team will open its 2000-01 season this
weekend when it plays host to the Navy Fall Golf Invitational at the United
States Naval Academy Golf Course.

The Midshipmen, who are coming off an appearance at the 2000 NCAA West
Regional last May, will field two teams in the tournament and will be
accompanied by American, Army, George Washington, Georgetown, Iona, James
Madison, Liberty, Mount St. Mary's, Pennsylvania, Princeton, Richmond,
Rollins, Rutgers, St. John's, St. Joseph's, Seton Hall, Towson and Winthrop.

"I'm really excited for this season, in particular this tournament," said
10th-year head coach Pat Owen. "This field is filled top to bottom with
some extremely talented teams and I think our Navy teams will fare pretty
well in the mix."

Leading the Midshipmen will be junior Drew Craig (Marion, Ohio), who was
Navy's top finisher at the 2000 NCAA West Regional, placing 104th in a field
of 150 golfers. Meanwhile, captain Kirk Glockner (Wilmington, N.C.) is
Navy's lone senior on the team this season and will be joined by junior
Marty Keogh (Newark, Del.) as the Mids' leaders in the year to come.
Glockner was Navy's third-best finisher at the NCAA Tournament last spring
and posted his best performance of the season with a seventh-place finish at
the Scotty Duncan Memorial, leading the Mids to a third-place team finish.
Keogh turned in a 233 as Navy's third-best finisher at the Patriot League
Championship last year. It was that championship that led the Mids to the
NCAA Tournament in which he turned in a 237 and was Navy's second-best
golfer at the tournament, placing 124th.

While sophomores Brian Crum (Fairfax, Va.), Nick Rogers (Lothian, Md.) and
Mitchell Reid (Geneva, N.Y.) did not letter as freshmen, they did see action
in various varsity tournaments throughout the year, gaining valuable
experience going into this season.

Navy's freshman class fields five players led by Billy Hurley (Leesburg,
Va.).

"Billy Hurley has had a great preseason for us," said Owen. "Going into the
weekend, he's been consistently one of our top few guys on the team. We are
excited to see what he and the other freshmen will be able to contribute to
this team."

The Navy Fall Golf Invitational kicks off Saturday morning with Princeton,
Penn and Iona teeing off at 8 a.m. The Navy Blue team will tee off at 10:15
a.m., followed by Navy Gold at 11 a.m. Action will continue through Sunday
afternoon.

Navy Water Polo Jumps Up Eight Spots: Earns Top 10 Ranking

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy men's water polo team moved up eight spots to 10th
in the latest College Water Polo Association (CWPA) top 25 released Tuesday.
The Mids are now the highest ranked team on the East Coast in the CWPA poll.

The Mids were ranked 18th in the CWPA preseason poll but vaulted up due to
an impressive showing in the Navy Labor Day Water Polo Tournament last
weekend. Navy defeated Massachusetts, previously ranked 10th, 3-2 in the
semifinals. In the championship game, the Mids defeated then 16th-ranked
Queens, 12-8.

UCLA maintains the top spot followed by California, Stanford, Southern
California, and Pepperdine to round out the top five.

Navy Captures Thrilling 2-1 Victory Over Colgate

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy men's soccer team defeated Patriot League foe
Colgate 2-1, as senior captain Michael Paisant put a header into the goal
past Red Raider keeper Jon Brunell with 43 seconds remaining in the match to
cap the Midshipmen comeback.

"That was a phenomenal comeback and phenomenal goal by Michael in the last
minute," Navy head coach Greg Myers said, who captured his 201st career
victory at Navy. "He took over the game in the last minute for us. We played
sluggish in the first half, and it seemed like we just went through the
motions."

Colgate controlled the majority of the first half, while the game remained
scoreless at the break.

In the second half, the Red Raiders got on the scoreboard as Conor Harrison
put in a header from four yards out past Navy keeper Brian Steckroth off an
assist from Nick Smith.

Junior forward Brye Gearhardt tied the game for the Mids at the 81:40 mark
in the second half, putting back a rebound directly in front of the goal.
Dan Neverosky and Dan Montgomery were each credited with an assist.

With less than a minute remaining in the match, Paisant, who took eight of
Navy's 13 shots in the game, put his head on the ball that Neverosky sent in
from 30 yards out and scored from 10 yards away. Neverosky and Jake Roberts
were each credited with an assist on the goal.

Navy (2-0-1) outshot Colgate 13-10 in the game, while Brunell made six saves
for the Red Raiders. Navy keeper Brian Steckroth made three saves for the
Mids.
Myers said afterwards that it was the first game-winning goal scored by the
Mids in the final minute of regulation for a Navy team in his 25 years as
head coach.

"The last 20 minutes, we just rolled up our sleeves, tightened our belts,
and got the job done. I'm proud of the comeback because we could have just
folded and quit. I give a lot credit to Colgate because they played hard out
there tonight."

Navy returns to action Saturday when the Mids travel to Towson to face off
against Howard at the Towson Soccer Classic at 2:30 p.m.

NAVY VOLLEYBALL TO PLAY AT PENN STATE INVITATIONAL

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- After starting its season with seven matches in five days,
the Navy volleyball team will return to action this coming weekend at the
Penn State Invitational in State College, Pa. The Midshipmen enter the
tournament with a 5-2 record.

Last week the Mids won all four of their matches at the Chesapeake Classic
(Robert Morris, Manhattan, Howard, Wagner), with three of those victories
coming in five-game matches. After a loss to then-No. 2 ranked Long Beach
State, Navy split a pair of matches against Niagara and Towson.

"I am definitely pleased with the progress we have made since the first
match," said Navy head coach Mike Schwob. "We played a lot of matches but I
think it worked in our favor. We needed to play a lot so everyone was
comfortable with each other, and we were able to learn and gain confidence
from both our wins and our losses."

Individually, Schwob is pleased with the play of several players, including
his setter, Jessica Van Norman (So., Oakland, Calif.).

"Jess is setting for good games for us. She continually gives us strong
offensive options. She has also improved her blocking a great deal. I also
have been pleased with the play of our middle blockers, Kristin Davidson
(So., Lexington Park, Md.) and Megan O'Connell (Sr., Beaverdam, Va.). They
have provided stability to the team and have given us positive contributions
on both offense and defense."

Navy will open the Penn State Invitational Friday with a 5 p.m. match
against James Madison. The Dukes have a
