Here Here! I totally agree with Carol. I attended the game and the Mids were not intimidated
by the 16th ranked TCU team or their top running back. I understand we beat the point spread
which was 27. Our guys are FANTASTIC in more ways than 1.

From out here in the west, I just want to offer a BIG AMEN to the
thoughts Carol and Carolyn expressed. It was terrific to be able to watch
one of our games at last and there was definitely a difference in the tone
of the commentators between pre-game and post-game. Before the game it was
all about TCU and how we would have our hands full. After, there was a great
deal more about our tough defense and holding TCU , not giving them nearly
the yardage that had been expected! And - the part I REALLY liked - talk
about how our players were not only tough but they were excellent young men,
too. THAT is hard to say about many colleges these days and I was really
proud of our Mids! Alot of kudos to Coach Weatherbie and his staff, too!

I remember when Holly and I went to Annapolis for a candidate visit last
November. It was the Navy/Temple game and the Navy team was staying in our
hotel. We were both struck by the poise and courtesy of the team members.
Such a contrast to other collegiate football teams that it made an immediate
impression on us. Our guys can give lessons on what is possible in
collegiate sports, one can be a class act and a class athlete.

I was also able to meet Charlie Weatherbie and was very impressed by him.

Senior Loren Morgan Named Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Navy forward Loren Morgan was named the Patriot League
Offensive Player of the Week as presented by Brine Monday by the league
office.
Morgan, a senior from Germantown, Md., came off the bench to score the game
winner in the 78th minute against Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass., Saturday,
extending the Mids' winning streak to eight games. The goal was Morgan's
fourth of the season. He has scored a goal in each of Navy's last three
games, while tallying a point in six of the Mids' last seven matches.
Morgan is the second member of the Navy men's soccer team to garner
offensive player-of-the-week honors. Senior Michael Paisant was honored
after the first week of the season by the league.
The Mids return to action Saturday at 7 p.m. when they play host to the
Lafayette Leopards at Dewey Field.

Mids Move Up in Regional Rankings
The Navy men's soccer team moved up one spot to No. 4 in the latest National
Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) South-Atlantic region top 10.
Virginia sits atop the poll, followed by James Madison and Virginia
Commonwealth.

Navy Lacrosse To Face Notre Dame at Disney's Wide World of Sports
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - An idea spawned over the summer will come to fruition when
the Navy and Notre Dame lacrosse teams meet in Orlando at Disney's Wide
World of Sports Nov. 13. The two will attempt to establish a rivalry of
their own on the eve of the Navy-Notre Dame football game which will be
contested at the Citrus Bowl in Orlando Saturday, Nov. 14 at 12-Noon.
"Everyone knows the history of Notre Dame-Navy in the athletic realm," said
Navy lacrosse captain Mike Sheedy (Williston Park, N.Y.). "I'm hoping this
will spark a rivalry between the two schools on the lacrosse field. But
when the weekend is over, hopefully Navy will come away with two big wins on
the playing field."
The Midshipmen, who finished second in the ECAC Lacrosse League, posted a
9-4 record last spring - the most victories in the Richie Meade era and the
most wins by Navy since 1987. Meanwhile, Navy lost three of its four
contests by one goal, including overtime contests at North Carolina and
against nationally-ranked Johns Hopkins.
Navy returns All-ECAC selections Adam Borcz (Millersville, Md.) and Eddie
McKinnon (Davidsonville, Md.). Borcz garnered first-team recognition after
scoring 22 goals and adding six assists as the Mids' second-leading scorer
in 2000. Borcz, who scored half of his goals in league play, scored his
50th-career goal in a three-goal effort against ECAC foe Stony Brook March
25. A 2000 Honorable Mention All-America selection, he is the only active
Midshipmen to post 50-plus goals.
McKinnon earned Second-Team All-ECAC recognition as part of an extremely
talented group at attack. Two of the three first-teamers were among the top
seven in the country in scoring, while the third is in the top 20.
McKinnon's contributions, though, did not go unnoticed. He was the league's
first player of the week, earning the honor after scoring three goals and
adding three assists in Navy's season-opening victory over UMBC. He led the
Midshipmen in goals (24) and assists (18). McKinnon's 18 assists were the
most posted since Matt Pawlikowski's 20 in 1992.
"This game will be a great learning experience for all of us," said
McKinnon. "It'll be more of a game atmosphere as opposed to a scrimmage
which is what most of the fall season is about. Even though we've not
established a rivalry with Notre Dame, it'll be a good game considering they
knocked off Loyola last year and moved on to the second round of the NCAA
Tournament."
Notre Dame, meanwhile is relatively new to the sport, fielding its first
team in 1981. But don't let its infancy fool you. Eleven-time champions of
the Great Lakes Conference, the Fighting Irish have made nine trips to the
NCAA Tournament including last year in which they knocked off Loyola, 15-13,
in Baltimore.
"There's a great deal of goodwill between the two schools," said Navy head
coach Richie Meade. "This is a great opportunity for us to play a quality
team in a different environment. I have a great deal of respect for Kevin
(Corrigan) and his staff and I believe this will be a great competition
between two fairly equal teams."
Game time is set for 5 p.m. and admission is $5 for all age groups.

Navy Water Polo Wins at North-South Tournament

PRINCETON, N.J. - The 16th-ranked Navy men's water polo team went 3-2 in
five games at the North-South Water Polo Challenge over the weekend,
Sept.30-Oct. 1.
Navy opened the tournament with a 14-7 win over Brown led by senior captain
Sean Foster who netted four goals. Junior Brendan Naeve scored three goals,
while senior Andrew Sause scored a goal and added three assists. Sophomore
goalie Cody Acuna played the first half for the Mids and made eight saves,
while senior Sean Stanowski made two saves and allowed three goals.
The Mids defeated 14th-ranked Queens, 13-6 led by junior Jason Duffie who
scored four goals. Sause scored three goals and Naeve netted two scores.
"We did a pretty good job against Queens," Navy head coach Mike Schofield
said. "We had a chance to score some goals and we played well defensively."
The Mids posted a 8-6 win over 10th-ranked Massachusetts in overtime as Navy
goalie Nick Hill made six saves and six steals. Duffie netted four goals and
Foster added three. Greg Trayer tied the game for the Minutemen with 14
seconds left in regulation. Duffie and Foster each scored in overtime for
the Mids.
"Overall, the guys hung tough against Massachusetts," Schofield said. "We
were disappointed that we let them back in the game and allowed them to tie
it, but we played well in overtime."
On Sunday, 19th-ranked Harvard handed Navy a 6-5 loss, as the Mids were
5-for-26 shooting in the game. Acuna played the first half in goal for the
Mids, recording three saves and allowing three goals. Stanowski played the
second half and made five saves, while allowing three goals.
In the final game of the tournament, Navy fell to 15th-ranked St. Francis,
12-4.
Sause scored two goals for the Mids, while Hill made one save and allowed
eight goals in the first half. Navy finished 4-for-23 shooting in the match.
Navy returns to action Friday at 7:30 p.m. when the Mids travel to George
Washington to take on the Colonels.

NAVY SAILING WEEK IN REVIEW

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Navy's Robyn Rey and Emily duPont highlighted the Navy
sailing team's weekend by posting top-10 finishes at the Faye Bennett Trophy
Regatta, held in Annapolis. Rey placed seventh in the 30-team field with 68
points, while duPont totaled 73 points and finished ninth. Rey started
Sunday's races in 20th place, but finished seventh, second and third in
three of the day's four races. Other Navy skippers included Julia Lillis
(16th) and Alexa Bestoso (22nd).

The Naval Academy also played host to the Middle Atlantic Intercollegiate
Sailing Association's (MAISA) Sloop Championship. Skippered by Parker
Garrett, Navy placed sixth in the 10-team field, just four points out of a
tie for fourth and eight points out of a tie for second. The top-two boats
qualified for the National Sloop Championship.

Navy's two entries had a fourth-place showing at the Freshman Groundbreaker,
hosted this past weekend by St. Mary's College. Doug Morea and Paula Peren
placed third in the A Division, while Christopher Clevenger and Ivan Millman
finished fourth in the B Division. Both Navy boats finished among the top
three in five of the 11 races in their respective divisions.

Due to light winds just three races were completed at the Laser District 11
Championship in Annapolis, but Navy had a pair of very strong showings.
Travis Weber placed third while Justin Smith finished 12th in the 60-team
regatta.

Navy's offshore sailing team finished in sixth place at the T.S. Stern Sloop
Regatta in Charleston, S.C. Brett Lefever, Matt Ahlers and Max Deroschers
totaled 47 points in the eight-race regatta.

Navy Goalkeeper Ranks Among NCAA All-Time Top 15

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Navy goalkeeper Brian Steckroth (Little Silver, N.J.) has
not allowed a goal in the last 663 minutes of action for the men's soccer
team, a streak which ranks 11th all-time in the NCAA for consecutive shutout
minutes.
Virginia's Bob Willen is 10th all-time with 715-consecutive minutes, while
Southern Methodist's Randy Phillips sits atop the list with 900-consecutive
minutes set during the 1980 season.
The Mids return to action Saturday at 7 p.m. when they play host to the
Lafayette Leopards at Dewey Field. A shutout against Lafayette in a regular
90-minute game would lift Steckroth to sixth on the all-time list.

Mids Receive Votes in National Top 25
The Navy men's soccer team received votes in the latest National Soccer
Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) top 25 poll released Monday. Others
receiving votes were Wake Forest, Ohio State and Stony Brook.
Navy (9-0-1), who owns the nation's longest unbeaten streak at 10 games, is
one of only four teams unbeaten in the country: top-ranked UCLA (8-0-1),
seventh-ranked San Jose State and 13th-ranked James Madison (8-0-1).

TENNIS TEAM OFF TO ECAC CHAMPIONSHIP

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy tennis team will open play Friday at the Eastern
Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship (ECAC) in Boston, Mass. The
tournament, to be held at Harvard's Beren Tennis Center, runs through
Monday.

Navy, seeded 13th in the 16-team field, will face fourth-seeded Virginia
Tech in the opening round of the tournament. On Saturday, Navy will play
either No. 5 Cornell or No. 12 West Virginia.

This past weekend Navy played host to the annual Navy Invitational at the
Naval Academy Tennis Center. The Mids tied Virginia and lost to Illinois
State and Oklahoma.

"We faced three strong teams this past weekend," said Navy head coach John
Officer. "Virginia and Oklahoma were both nationally ranked last season and
Illinois State will be ranked this year. Considering the competition level
we faced, along with the fact that our No. 1 player was in the No. 5 spot
last year, and our current No. 2 played No. 6 last spring, I was pleased by
our results.

"We have improved each week of the fall and I expect that trend to continue
in Boston."

Ben Carnevale to be recognized

Navy To Honor Former Coaching Great Ben Carnevale
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Hall of Fame basketball coach Ben Carnevale will be
recognized by the Naval Academy Athletic Association at halftime of the Nov.
18 football game versus Wake Forest, while also being honored at the Navy's
men's basketball contest that evening against Rice.
"Ben Carnevale was one of the finest coaches and gentleman that has coached
at the United States Naval Academy," said Navy Director of Athletics Jack
Lengyel. "His records and accomplishments speak for themselves. We are
privileged to have the opportunity to honor Ben as one of our former
basketball head coaches."
Carnevale's storied career began in 1945 when he took over the head coaching
reigns at North Carolina, guiding the Tar Heels to a Southern Conference
championship with a 25-6 record. He followed up with a 26-5 campaign the
next year, dropping the NCAA Tournament championship game to Oklahoma A&M,
43-40.
He left the following season for Annapolis, directing the Midshipmen to an
18-1 record, an NCAA Tournament semifinal appearance and was named the New
York Basketball Writers' Coach of the Year. Carnevale went on to lead Navy
to a 257-160 (.616) record during his 20-year tenure at the Naval Academy.
Under his guidance, Navy made six postseason tournament appearances - five
in the NCAA Tournament (1947, '53, '54, '59, 60) and one in the NIT (1962).
Carnevale laid the foundation for which Navy men's basketball has carried on
today with two-time Patriot League Coach of the Year Don DeVoe leading the
charge.
"Coach Carnevale has always been a giant in the athletic fields," said
DeVoe. "He came here after World War II, built and continued a great Navy
tradition. He's been one of the great leaders throughout his career - as a
player, coach and athletic administrator - as is evident by his induction
into several halls of fame."
Carnevale sat on the U.S. Olympic Basketball Committee for 20 years and in
1964 became the chairman of the committee. He was president of the National
Association of Basketball Coaches in 1966; a member and former chairman of
the NCAA basketball tournament committee; president of the National
Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics; president of the
International Basketball Board; president of the NIT and chairman of the
ECAC basketball tournament.
But it was in 1970 when Carnevale received his highest honor. Navy's
all-time winningest coach, Carnevale was inducted into the Naismith
Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass.
There will be a private reception for former players and friends of Ben
Carnevale prior to the basketball game at Alumni Hall. Contact (410)

Women's Collegiate Soccer
Mids return to Patriot League play

Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2000
Women's Soccer Contact: Stacie Michaud (410) 293-4517 ext. 136

Navy Women's Soccer Plays Host to Lafayette and Pennsylvania
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - After playing its last four contests on the road, the Navy
women's soccer team returns home to play host to Patriot League foe
Lafayette (7-4, 0-1 Patriot League) Friday, while facing Pennsylvania (4-3,
1-2 Ivy League) Sunday. Both contests are slated for 7 p.m. starts at Dewey
Field.
The Midshipmen are 4-8 on the season, including an 0-2 mark in Patriot
League action. Navy began the season losing three of its first four
contests, playing two top-20 teams in the country (San Diego State and
California). But despite the rocky start, Navy continues to play its own
game and fight for a victory.
"We've really looked to each other to fight through some of the hard times
this year," said junior midfielder Justine Fisher. "We've probably had to
approach some games differently from a mental aspect, and starting the
season 1-3 made us change our outlook on the rest of the season.
Regardless, we are ready to get back to winning some games and fulfilling
our ultimate goal which is to win the Patriot League Tournament."
And while the Mids look forward to the league tournament and playing their
nemesis Colgate next weekend, Navy also knows it must get there one step at
a time.
"We always look forward to playing Colgate - it's one of the biggest games
we play each year," said Fisher. "But right now, we are just playing a game
at a time."
Leading the charge is Fisher, who has shouldered plenty of Navy's offense
over the last two years, and has continued to make the plays for the Mids.
The 1999 Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year, she has posted a
team-high seven goals and recently moved into second on Navy's all-time
points scored list when she fired in a goal and assisted on the game winner
in Navy's 2-1 win over Air Force. She's been heavily marked all season as
Navy's biggest offensive threat, but hasn't felt the need to carry the
offense.
"I don't worry about pressure," she said. "Other teams might worry about
putting pressure on me, but I just go out there and play and try to help the
team out the best I can."
And help she can, as the Midshipmen return to Annapolis and the confines of
their home field.
"We love playing on our home field," said Fisher. "It's nice to have our
fans behind us and it seems as though we are always a lot more prepared to
play at home."

NAVY VOLLEYBALL TO PLAY HOST TO LAFAYETTE AND LEHIGH

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy volleyball team will be in search of its first
Patriot League victory of the season when it opens a seven-match homestand
Friday night against Lafayette and Saturday night versus Lehigh. Both
matches start at 7 p.m. in Macdonough Hall.

Navy (6-10/0-2) opened league play last weekend with a pair of losses at
Bucknell and Colgate. The Bison defeated the Mids, 15-9, 15-4, 15-13, while
the Red Raiders posted a 15-5, 15-12, 15-11 win over Navy.

"When we used our game plan, we were effective," said Navy head coach Mike
Schwob. "We again started very slow in both matches, but played very well
in game three of each match."

Lafayette and Lehigh travel to Annapolis just days after the two teams
played each other Wednesday night at Lafayette. The Leopards enter Friday's
match against Navy with a 0-3 Patriot League record, while the Mountain
Hawks carry a 3-0 league record to Annapolis.

"Lafayette is a much improved team from last season," said Schwob. "Lehigh
is playing very well right now and I am sure they have a lot of confidence
heading into our match."

Setter Jessica Van Norman (Soph., Oakland, Calif.) enters this week needing
just 34 assists to move into a third-place tie for most career assists at
Navy during the Division I era (since 1991). In just over one season of
play, Van Norman has totaled 1,566 career assists and is 34 shy of tying
Kelly Cantley who recorded 1,600 assists from 1991-93.

"No matter whether our passers give Jess an easy or a difficult ball to
handle, she finds a way to give our hitters a good set," said Schwob. "She
is a real calming influence to the team. She had a great first season last
year, has improved each week of this season and I expect her continue
improving throughout the rest of the season and her career."

Navy Golf Meets Archrival Army
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy golf team will face Academy rival Army Saturday at
the West Point Golf Course. The rivalry has brought the two teams together
every year since 1939 in one of the lone duals still played in collegiate
golf today. Tenth-year head coach Pat Owen has led the Mids to victory in
four of the last nine meetings contested, including two-straight outings.
Navy has played host to three of the last four duals, which poses a
potential threat to the Mids in terms of knowing Army's course.
"Since we've played there just once in the last four years, most of our guys
will be new to the course," said Owen. "This week in practice, we'll focus
on their golf course. It's a very hilly course with lots of elevated shots.
We'll do our best to duplicate shots that the guys will encounter to better
prepare them."
With the rigors of the course, it will be important for Navy to come
prepared.
"The West Point Golf Course runs along the Hudson River and is absolutely
beautiful, but its rugged terrain will be tough. Conditioning will be a
factor playing 36 holes in one day, however, I think the guys are in
excellent condition. They've taken care of the conditioning, so my job this
week is to prepare them mentally."
The Midshipmen and Black Knights have already met on the links in Navy's
Fall Golf Invitational Sept. 9-10. Navy finished 11th, while Army claimed a
tie for 17th. The Black Knights recently finished seventh at the Yale
Invitational and second at the Dartmouth Invitational. Junior Ryan Hazleton
has been Army's standout player in the fall improving from an 82nd finish at
Navy, to 15th at Yale and a tie for fourth at Dartmouth.
"This is our only dual meet of the year and it always sticks out in our
mind," said Owen. "Despite going into their territory, we have a strong
lineup. We respect their program, but we only have one chance to beat Army
and the guys have looked forward to it all fall."
Meanwhile, Navy fields a fairly inexperienced team which includes a senior,
a junior, two sophomores and a freshman. Leading the way is junior Drew
Craig (Marion, Ohio), who was Navy's top finisher at the 2000 NCAA West
Regional, placing 104th in a field of 150 golfers. Craig shot a 154 at the
Navy Fall Golf Invitational, and turned in the Mids' top performance last
week at the McLaughlin Tournament with a 36th-place finish with a 156.
Navy freshman Billy Hurley (Leesburg, Va.) has been a tremendous addition to
the squad and has been the Mids' second-best finisher in both fall contests.
He tied for 33rd after posting a 149 at the Navy Fall Golf Invitational and
was 43rd at the McLaughlin Tournament with a two-day 158.
Brian Crum (Fairfax, Va.) began the season in impressive fashion, placing
third at Navy's Fall Golf Invitational. Last week, he registered a 162 as
the Mids' third-best finisher.

Dual Role
Senior wide receiver/punter Brian Williams (Greenwell Springs, La.) is
the only player in the country to be a starting kicker or punter and also
start at another position. The only other players in the nation that punts
or kicks and also plays another non-kicking position is Andy Shatley of
Arkansas State and Steve Mullins of Utah State. Shatley is the Indians'
starting punter and is also the backup quarterback, while Mullins is the
Aggies' starting punter and also plays some at wide receiver. Williams
caught one pass for nine yards and punted the ball nine times for a 39.0
average, including a long of 46 in his first game against Temple. The nine
punts were the most by a Navy team since Sept. 7, 1996, when Navy punted
nine times in a season opening win at Rutgers. Against Georgia Tech,
Williams caught one pass for six yards and punted the ball four times for a
36.3 average. He had six punts for a 39.7 average against Boston College
with a then career long of 49 yards. Against TCU, he caught one pass for
five yards and punted the ball eight times for 335 yards (41.9) with a
career-long of 54 yards.

Catches Yards Avg. TD Punts Avg. Long
3 20 6.7 0 27 39.6 54

Bowen's Back
Junior linebacker Jake Bowen (Asheville, N.C.) made his return to
college football against Temple after missing the last two years because of
a Mormon Mission in Maceio', Brazil. Bowen made his presence felt, coming
up with 12 tackles, two tackles for a loss and a forced fumble. Against
Georgia Tech, Bowen led the team with nine tackles and broke up a pass. He
had just three tackles against Boston College, but came back to make six
tackles against TCU.

Robinson Recovering From Heart Surgery
Naval Academy assistant football coach Danilo Robinson is resting at
home after having surgery to repair a small hole in his heart on Sept. 5.
Robinson, who had suffered a mild stroke last summer, had gone to the doctor
Aug. 31, when the hole was detected. Robinson, who coaches the outside
linebackers, coached in the Temple game before having surgery the following
Tuesday. He is expected to be back in the office in five weeks.

Close Games The Difference
Navy lost six games last year by seven points or less. The Mids lost to
Boston College (14-10), Rice (20-17), Air Force (19-14), Akron (35-29) Notre
Dame (28-24) and Hawai'i (48-41), and beat West Virginia (31-28) in close
encounters. The Mids are 8-13, including 1-8 in the last nine games, in
games decided by seven points or less since 1995. These games usually make
or break a season.
In 1995, the Mids were 5-6, but didn't have the school's first winning
record since 1982 because of a 14-13 loss to Army.
In 1996, Navy was 9-3 and went to the Aloha Bowl because of a 4-2 record
in games decided by seven points or less. Navy defeated Rutgers, SMU and
Air Force in the regular season and beat California in the Aloha Bowl that
year by seven points or less, plus the upset win at Georgia Tech was a
three-point game with a minute to go when Rashad Smith intercepted a pass
and returned it for a touchdown.
In 1997, Navy was 7-4, but didn't get a bowl bid because it went 0-2 in
games decided by seven points or less, losing to Air Force by three and
Notre Dame by four.
In 1998, Navy was 3-8, but just 2-2 in games decided by seven points or
less, losing to Rutgers and Army and beating Colgate and Boston College.

The Coach
Charlie Weatherbie is in his sixth season as head football coach of the
Navy Midshipmen, owning a record of 29-32 (.475) and a 1-0 (1.000) mark in
bowl games. Weatherbie's 29 wins in five plus seasons is the fifth most in
Naval Academy history. He needs three wins to tie Bill Ingram for fourth
place on Navy's all-time win list. His six seasons as head coach of the
Midshipmen ties him with Wayne Hardin for the third-longest tenure in school
history. Only George Welsh and Eddie Erdelatz (nine years apiece) have been
head coaches longer than Weatherbie at Navy.
Weatherbie is in his ninth year as a collegiate head coach and has a
career record of 44-51 (.463) and a 2-0 record in bowl games (1.000). Three
years ago, Weatherbie led the Midshipmen to a 9-3 mark and a victory over
California in the Aloha Bowl.
Weatherbie was appointed Navyıs 34th head football coach on December 30,
1994. He came to the Naval Academy after three years as head coach at Utah
State, where he took the Aggies to their first Big West Conference
championship in 15 years in 1993 and a win over Ball State in the Las Vegas
Bowl. He was an assistant coach at Air Force for six years and was also an
assistant at Wyoming and Arkansas.

This is the 42nd season the Midshipmen have played at Navy-Marine Corps
Memorial Stadium. The stadium was dedicated Sept. 26, 1959, when Navy
defeated William & Mary, 29-2. In the 161 games played at Navy-Marine Corps
since its dedication, the Midshipmen have attracted 3,925,290 fans-an
average of 24,380 fans. Navy set an attendance record in 1999 for the
second-straight year with an average of 31,996, and it was also the first
time in stadium history the Midshipmen drew over 30,000 in every game. The
Mids have a record of 99-70-1 (.585) in games played at Navy-Marine Corps
Memorial Stadium, including a 15-12 (.556) record under head coach Charlie

Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium has not been a friendly place for the
Midshipmen, as they have lost seven of the last eight games played at home
over the last three seasons. Since 1998, Navy is 3-9 (.250) at home, 1-3
(.250) in neutral site games and 4-7 (.364) in road games.

No Upset
Navy has lost 29-straight games to ranked opponents. The last time the
Mids pulled an upset was Sept. 20, 1985, when Navy went into Charlottesville
and stunned 20th-ranked Virginia, 17-13. Since that time, Navy has lost to
Air Force, Notre Dame and South Carolina in 1985, Notre Dame in 1986, Notre
Dame and Syracuse in 1987, Notre Dame and Syracuse in 1988, Air Force,
Pittsburgh and Notre Dame in 1989, Virginia and Notre Dame in 1990, Notre

20 Or More Passes Usually Ends In A Loss
Since 1995, Navy is 4-12 (.250) when it has attempted 20 or more passes
in a game, 25-20 (.556) when throwing the ball less than 20 times.

0-4 Start
The 0-4 start is the worst start by a Navy team since 1994 when the Mids
started 0-5 en route to a 3-8 season.

No Points
Navy's 26 points in the first four games are the least amount of points
scored by a Navy team in a four-game span since 1992 when the Mids scored
just 14 points in the first four contest en route to a 1-10 season. It is
also tied for the sixth-worst scoring output in the first-four games in
school history. Only the 1928 (6 points), 1992 (14), 1902 (15), 1899 (18)
and 1971 (19) teams scored less in the first four games. The 1894, 1912 and
1920 teams also scored 26 points in the first four games.

Low Output
Navy's 120 yards of total offense was its least amount of total yards in
a game since Nov. 10, 1985, when the Mids gained 113 yards against Syracuse
in a 29-0 loss.

Three and Out
In Navy's 46 offensive drives this year, 21 (.460) have ended in three
plays or less.

Shutout
TCU's shutout of Navy was the first time the Mids had been shut out
isince Nov. 14, 1998, when the Mids were shut out by Notre Dame, 30-0.

Penalties Killing Mids
Navy has committed 26 penalties for 183 yards in the first-four games
which puts the Mids on pace to break the school record for penalties in a
season, which was set last season with 71.

Raheem The Dream
Raheem Lambert (Jr./Riverside, Calif.) rushed for 118 yards on 19
carries in Navy's 40-13 loss at Georgia Tech. The 118 yards rushing by
Lambert were the second most in his career. He rushed for 120 yards and one
touchdown on 18 carries against Hawai'i last year. He also rushed for over
100 yards last year against Tulane, running for 101 yards on 19 carries.
Lambert's 40 yards rushing against TCU pushed him over 1,000 (1,015 yards)
for his career. Lambert needs just 650 yards to pass Joe Bellino (1958-60)
for 10th on the all-time Navy career rushing list. He needs 653 yards to
pass Bob Jackson (1973-75) and Jason Van Matre (1990-93) for eighth on the
list.

Broadwater Interception Free
Brian Broadwater (Sr./Elizabethtown, Pa.) has thrown just eight
interceptions in 265-career attempts (.030), which is a school record for
lowest interception percentage. Second best is .035 by Bob Powers, who
threw seven interceptions in 199 attempts from 1977-79. Broadwater has now
gone five full games without throwing an interception and has thrown 100
passes without being picked off. The last time he threw an interception was
Oct. 2, 1999, at West Virginia in a game that Navy won, 31-28. Last year,
Broadwater threw just two interceptions in 107 attempts (.019), the
third-lowest single-season interception percentage in school history. The
record is held by Alton Grizzard who threw two interceptions in 147 attempts
(.014) in 1989.

In The Red Zone
The Navy defense has done a solid job iof keeping the opposition out of
the end zone. The problem is, the opposition has practically lived in the
red zone, making 19 trips in the first four games. The defense has
surrendered 10 touchdowns and five field goals in those 16 trips.
Meanwhile, Navy has gotten inside the 20 just four times in four games and
has scored only one TD in those four trips.

Inside the Red Zone
I20 TDs FGs End of Half Stopped
Navy 4 1 1 0 2
Opp. 19 10 5 1 3

Schedule Gets Easier--Eventually
Navy's first six opponents have a combined record in 2000 of 17-9
(.654), which includes victories over North Carolina, Northwestern, BYU,
Texas A&M and Purdue. Navy's opponents over the last five games have a
combined record of 8-14 (.364), including games against 0-4 Wake Forest and
0-4 Army. Only Toledo (4-1, including a victory at Penn State) has a
winning record.

Lepore Preseason All-America
Senior free safety Chris Lepore (North Olmsted, Ohio) was named
Preseason First-Team All-America by Athlon and Blue Ribbon College Football
Yearbook. Lepore is Navy's first Preseason All-America since Napoleon
McCallum in 1984. He was also named Preseason Third-Team All-America by
Football News.
He has already been selected to the Hula Bowl and Gridiron Classic
All-Star Game and is one-of-40 players on the "watch list" for the Jim
Thorpe Award, which is awarded to the nation's top defensive back.
Lepore was an Honorable Mention All-America by Football News after the
1999 season and was also named to the All-Independent Team by Football News
and College Football News.
Lepore led Navy with 127 tackles a year ago, 24 more than the
next-highest tackler. Lepore made his mark last year against Notre Dame
when he recorded 20 tackles, had a sack, forced a fumble (which he
recovered, setting up a field goal), and blocked a punt that was recovered
for a touchdown. He had a career-high 22 tackles against Air Force last
fall.
Lepore had his best game last week against Boston College, coming up
with 17 tackles, three pass deflections and picked off his second career
pass in the end zone. In Navy's opener against Temple, Lepore record eight
tackles, including six solo tackles. Lepore had six tackles against Georgia
Tech. He was in on 11 stops against TCU.

Subject: Game Notes for Air Force-Sent 10/5--Front Page and Football

Game Data
The Navy Midshipmen take on the Air Force Falcons, Saturday, at Falcon
Stadium in Colorado Springs. Kickoff is 11 a.m. (1 p.m. Eastern time).
This is the first game in the battle for the Commander-in-Chief's Trophy.
The game will be televised by Sportswest Productions. Mitch Hyder will call
the play-by-play, with Craig Hislop handling the color analysis. The game
can be heard on the Navy Radio Network with Bob Socci and Eric Ruden calling
the action. The game can also be he world wide on the internet at
www.broadcast.com or at www.wnav.com(.).

Injuries
Starting outside linebacker Eddie Carthan (Fr./Donalsville, Ga.) is out
with a torn trapezius in his left shoulder, back-up linebacker Daryl Hill
(Sr./Jupiter, Fla.) out with a sprained right football. Starting left
offensive guard Philip Yeh (Sr./Mesquite, Texas) is out with a broken right
ankle. Quarterback Brian Madden (Jr./Lawton, Okla.), who started the final
five games last year after replacing an injured Brian Broadwater and led the
nation in rushing among quarterbacks, is most likely out for the year after
injuring his right knee in the spring game. Madden had surgery on May 19
and had both meniscus repaired and his ACL reconstructed. Reserve nose guard
Alan Thompson (Jr./Ft. Washington, Md.) is out for the year with a broken
right leg suffered during the first week of practice.

Defense Stands Tall In Loss To TCU
The Navy defense played well all day, but a lack of offense eventually
caught up to the Mids and TCU pulled away for a 24-0 victory. Navy trailed
the 16th-ranked Horned Frogs by just a 10-0 margin with a little more than
three minutes left in the third quarter before LaDainian Tomlinson finally
got in the end zone with a four-yard TD run to give TCU a 17-0 lead. George
Layne tacked on another score in the fourth when he caught a 23-yard
touchdown pass from Casey Printers. The Navy defense held Tomlinson, who is
a Heisman Trophy candidate, to just 121 yards and one touchdown on 33
carries. Printers completed 14 of his 17 passes for 188 yards and two
touchdowns. Offensively, the Mids were held to just eight first downs,
three of which came by penalty, and 120 yards of total offense (112 rushing,
eight passing). The Navy defense was led by Chris Lepore (Sr./North
Olmsted, Ohio), who tallied a team-high 11 tackles. Michael Wagoner
(Jr./Wichita Falls, Texas) had two tackles for a loss, while Ben Mathews
(Fr./Pittsburgh, Pa.) recorded a sack and forced a fumble.

Navy vs. Air Force
Air Force leads the all-time series, 22-10, including a 19-14 victory
last year at Fed-Ex Field in Landover, Md. The Falcons, who have won three
straight against the Midshipmen, are 12-3 all-time against Navy in Colorado
Springs. Navy's last win over Air Force came in 1996, when the Mids
defeated the Falcons, 20-17, in Colorado Springs. The Mids are 1-4 against
Air Force under Charlie Weatherbie.

Scouting Air Force
The Falcons are 3-1 on the year, defeating Cal-State Northridge (55-6),
BYU (31-23) and Utah (23-14), while losing to UNLV (34-13). Quarterback
Mike Thiessen leads the Air Force offense, rushing for 270 yards and one
touchdown and completing 32 of his 59 passes for 560 yards with seven
touchdowns and one interception. Thiessen's favorite target is Ryan
Fleming, who has 13 catches for 345 yards and three touchdowns. Air Force
is averaging 307.5 yards rushing per game, 150 yards passing per game and
457.5 yards of total offense per game. Defensively, Wes Glisson leads the
stop troops with 30 tackles. C.J. Zanottis has 26 tackles, including five
tackles for a loss and three sacks.

Navy-Air Force Ties
Navy head coach Charlie Weatherbie was an assistant at Air Force from
1984-89. Running backs coach Sammy Steinmark was an assistant at Air Force
from 1982-98. Defensive coordinator Tim DeRuyter is a 1985 graduate of the
Air Force Academy and was a three-year letterman at outside linebacker.
DeRuyter was also an assistant in Colorado Springs from 1989-92.

Commander-In-Chief's Trophy
The Commander-In-Chiefıs-Trophy is presented annually to the winner of
the football competition among the three major service academies < Army,
Navy and Air Force States.
Air Force has won the trophy 14 times, while Army has won it six times
and Navy five times.
    The Midshipmen were winners in 1973, 1975, 1978, 1979 and 1981. Air
Force won it in 1982, 1983, 1985, 1987, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1994, 1995,
1997, 1998 and 1999. Armyıs wins came in 1972 (the initial year), 1977,
1984, 1986, 1988 and 1996.
When there is no clear-cut winner, the Trophy remains with the winner
of the previous yearıs competition. This happened in 1974, 1976, 1980 and
1993.
The three-sided trophy stands two-and-a-half-feet tall and is engraved
with the academy seals. Reproductions of the three mascots < the Army Mule,
the Navy Goat and the Air Force Falcon < are ensconced on the respective
sides of this bauble. The trophy is sponsored by the West Point Association
of Graduates, the Naval Academy Alumni Association and the Air Force
Association of Graduates.
The year in which the trophy is won is engraved on a plate gracing the
respective academyıs side of the Trophy.

WOMEN'S CREW TO COMPETE AT HEAD OF THE OHIO

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Navy's women's crew team will compete this Saturday in the
Head of the Ohio Regatta in Pittsburgh, Pa.

The regatta features several teams that qualified for the 2000 NCAA
Championship, including Virginia (third place at NCAAs), Michigan, Michigan
State, Boston University and Ohio State. A total of 37 schools will be
represented at the regatta. Navy will enter three boats in the Open Eight
class.

"This is still early in the season for us to be facing such difficult
competition," said Navy head coach Mike Hughes. "But I think it is good for
us to go up against some of the best teams in the country. It will help
show us where we are at."

Sprint Football to Take on Army This Weekend in
18th Annual "Anthracite Bowl"

ANNAPOLIS, Md- The Navy sprint football team heads to St. Clair, Pa. to take
on Army in the 18th annual "Anthracite Bowl" on Saturday, October 7 at 12:00
pm at the St. Clair Area Veterans Stadium.
"The town puts in a lot of effort for it. It's a big deal to
them," said head coach Maj. Austin Renforth. "It's one of the few games of
the year when we have a lot of people in the stands."
The two teams met last season in Pottsville, Pa., with the
Midshipmen picking up the 12-10 victory. Two field goals by Ian Duncan
proved to be the difference in the game. Drew McGinly and Doug Hale
connected in the first quarter for the Mids only touchdown.
Navy (1-0) is coming off a 24-22 victory over Frostburg St.'s JV
team on September 24, while Army (2-0) has not allowed a point this season.
The Black Knights defeated the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, 41-0, in the season
opener and Wagner JV, 32-0.
This is a road game unlike any the members of the two teams will ever have.
Instead of staying in a hotel, they stay with families in the area.
"The sponsor families build lifelong relationships with these guys.
They still keep in touch with these guys long after they're finished at the
Academy," said Renforth. "The families also keep in touch to help their
kids go to the Academy. Last year, that area put five guys at either West
Point or Annapolis. That's the kind of influence we have on the community"
Part of the Anthracite weekend is devoted to community service.
Both the cadets and midshipmen visit local elementary schools. This year the
midshipmen will be going to St. Clair Elementary and special education
school IU-29, where they will emphasize saying no to alcohol and other
drugs.
"Our players realize when they see kids that it's about more than
football," said Renforth.
The weekend culminates on Sunday afternoon with the Anthracite Bowl
Awards Ceremony.

Hi:

My son just joined the tri team a few weeks ago. His first race will be
tomorrow. If any Navy parents will be there, I sure would love to get a pic
or two. It kills me to miss his races but I'm on the west coast. His name is
Matt Miller, he's pretty typical triathlete build and he's a 3/C ( although I
don't know if that helps you ID him at all ). He's riding an old Trek 5200 (
purple I think) he scrounged from an upperclassman.
If you get a pic email me and I'll give you my address.

Thanks much.

Mids Play Host to Lafayette

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy men's soccer team will play host to Patriot League
foe Lafayette (1-8-0) at Dewey Field Saturday at 7 p.m.
"Despite Lafayette 's record, it concentrates on defense and put a lot of
numbers back on defense," Navy head coach Greg Myers said. "This is not
going to be a pretty game."
Navy (9-0-1) owns the nation's longest unbeaten streak at 10 games and is
coming off a 1-0 victory at Holy Cross last weekend. Senior Loren Morgan
(Germantown, Md.) scored the game winner at the 74:50 mark and was named
Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week, as well as ECAC Player of the
Week for his efforts.
Lafayette dropped a 1-0 decision to Pennsylvania Wednesday in Philadelphia.
The Leopards have lost five games this season by a score of 1-0. Their lone
win was a 1-0 (OT) victory against Philadelphia College in Easton, Pa., on
Sept. 23.
Last season, Lafayette defeated the Mids 1-0 in the championship game of the
Patriot League Tournament. Navy leads the overall series, 15-7-2, and is
11-4-2 at home against the Leopards.

Navy Rifle Team Holds Annual Intra-squad Match

ANNAPOLIS, Md.-The corny-looking crown was tilted to the side, but the smile
on 2/c Luke Shank's face stretched from ear to ear as he was recognized as
the "Shooting King" at Navy Rifle's annual Scheutzen-Koenig Match this past
Saturday. The intra-squad match is held at the beginning of each season at
the Bancroft Range as part of the selection process for Navy's first team.
Shank's first-place 1167 smallbore score coupled with his 380 air rifle
total garnered the top overall spot for the junior from Ft. Wayne, Indiana.
Shank, a smallbore All-American, was challenged by 1/c Scott Cohick (1159),
2/c Dave Bachta (1155), and 1/c George Adams (1154).
In air rifle, 3/c James Kauber led with a sparkling 391- a personal best for
the Burlington, Washington native. Other top air scores included George
Adams at 389, 1/c Tran Lam (388), and 4/c Marta Jung (387).
"Our team had an outstanding day," said head coach Bill Kelley. "Once again,
this team has presented me with the challenge of choosing the four best
shooters in each event. They are posting some great scores! Right now, I
would say that we have at least six people in each discipline who are
shooting potential All-American scores."
The pre-season team chosen by Kelley shot within ten points of the Navy
record- an exciting beginning for Navy Rifle. Navy begins the season in
earnest, October 14, at the Bancroft Range with the inaugural Great Eight
Tournament. Invitations to this match are made to the eight teams from the
previous season's NCAA Championship. This year 's competition will include
#2 Xavier, #3 Nebraska, #4 Norwich, and #5 Navy.

Navy Women's Soccer Team Scores 4-3 Overtime Victory Against Lafayette

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy women's soccer team defeated Lafayette 4-3 as
freshman Stacy Finley (Alamo, Calif.) netted a goal just 32 seconds in
overtime, as the Mids captured their first Patriot League win this season.
"It was very important for us to get our first Patriot League win tonight,"
Navy head coach Carin Gabarra said. "Our goal as a team is to still make it
to the Patriot League Tournament and the NCAA Tournament. This was one of
our best attacking games we've had this season."
Navy (5-8, 1-3 Patriot League) fell behind early when Lafayette's Emily
Myers scored just under two minutes into the game off an assist from Katie
Morton.
Kristen Quigley gave Lafayette (8-5, 0-3) a 2-0 lead when she scored off an
assist from Briana Rinchiuso.
Junior Melissa Rains (Gold River, Calif.) put the Mids on the board at the
37:25 mark when she lobbed a shot from 35 yards out over Lafayette keeper
Ashley Wesmiller. Erin Kelly (East Brunswick, N.J.) and Justine Fisher
(Tucson, Ariz.) were each credited with an assist on Rains' goal.
Fisher tied the game at the 40:41 mark when she scored off Rains' corner
kick.
Navy took a 3-2 lead at 54:11 in the second half when Fisher netted her
second goal of the match off another corner kick. Kelly and Heather Honnette
(Martinez, Calif.) each assisted on the goal.
However, Myers tied the game for the Leopards at the 66:30 mark on a penalty
kick.
The Mids made quick work of the overtime period when Finley scored from 15
yards out on the left wing off an assist from Nadia Sheikh (Canal
Winchester, Ohio) and Megan Weller (Richmond, Va.).
Navy returns to action Sunday at 7 p.m. when it plays host to Pennsylvania
at Dewey Field.

We would sure be interested in seeing any pictures from the Head of the

Just a quick note to say that the women's softball team won both games today
against Georgetown. The first game was 12-0 and the second one was 9-1. Way

Midshipmen Golf Team Wins N-Star, Defeats Army, 7-4
WEST POINT, N.Y. - After winning three of the four best-ball matches in the
morning, Navy cruised to an early 3-1 lead en route to a 7-4 N-Star victory
over Army Saturday afternoon at the West Point Golf Course.
The pairs of Nick Rogers-Drew Craig, Marty Keogh-Brian Crum and Billy
Hurley-Kirk Glockner picked up victories to set the standard and gave the
Mids an early 3-1 edge heading into singles match play.
The Mids increased their lead to 5-1, as freshman Rob Stochel (Crown Point,
Ind.) and Billy Hurley (Leesburg, Va.) picked up victories. Army, however,
battled back to within one, as David Crawford won 1-up, Blayne Smith was
victorious 5 and 4 and Peter Mangold won 3 and 2. But it was Navy's leader
junior Drew Craig (Marion, Ohio) who clinched the victory for the Mids,
defeating Kevin Lee 3 and 2. Meanwhile, Brian Crum (Fairfax, Va.) rounded
out the singles action with a 3 and 1 decision for Navy.
"I'm really proud of how well our guys played today," said Navy head coach
Pat Owen. "This is just the second time in the last four or five years that
we've played on this course, so our team was unfamiliar with the layout.
Its terrain is extremely tough, but we played well when we needed to and
held off their late comeback in singles."
Navy returns to action Oct. 21-24 when it travels to Fort Worth, Texas, to
compete in the Service Academy Challenge.
