Navy hosted the opening meet of the 2001 Men's Gymnastics season on
Sunday at Macdonough Hall. This year's team consists of five
juniors, one sophomore, and seven freshmen, who combined to lead Navy
to a victory over William & Mary and James Madison University. This
was the first meet under the new international rules, which become
effective after each summer Olympics, so gymnasts and judges
struggled to identify the successes and failures of each trick in
every routine. This was the first time in our experience that we won
the Navy Open, so I expect a great season is ahead.

The Mids travel to West Point next weekend for the West Point
Invitational -- a BIG meet with U Mass, Springfield, Penn State,
Temple, James Madison, Navy, and Army. If you're in the area and can
attend, you'll see some great gymnastics!

It has been announced that both the men's and women's Navy Swim Team has been
ranked among the top mid-major schools in the country according to a recent
CollegeSwimming. com national poll.

The Navy men are ranked forth in the nation, while the Navy women are ranked
11th nationally.

Rankings are based upon dual meet points and individual event times from each
school. Teams from 20 conferences such as the Patriot League, the Ivy
League/EISL, Northeast, Ohio Valley, Southern and Big West are eligible for
the poll.

This news comes after the men's team winning its 10th straight N-Star by
beating Army at West Point.

Navy men swim this Saturday at the University of Penna. in Philadelphia at
3:30.

I'm curious about how the football players juggle summer school, YP cruises,
NTT, and a summer break. Do they get some time off between their plebe year
and their youngster year? Due to a heavy course load, I understand that
summer school is a must for FB players entering the 3rd class. What has been
your experience?

Did anyone catch the Army/Navy men's basketball game on TV last night
(1/24)? I watched part of the first half - when it looked as if Army was
going to blow away Navy. Due to long hours at work, I promptly fell asleep
(guess I wanted to block out the thought that Army would actually win when
Navy was favored).

To my delight, I read that the final score was Navy 95 Army 89. The tempo
at the beginning of the game seemed so fast paced - did Navy wear Army down
or was foul trouble part of Army's demise? Just curious as there was no
write up in our local papers, of course.

Go Navy!

Navy Men's Gymnast Dan Finnegan Honored by ECAC

CENTERVILLE, Mass. - Navy gymnast Dan Finnegan (Jr./Richmond, Va.)
was named the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Gymnast of
the Week the league announced Tuesday.
"He is certainly deserving of this honor no question," Navy head
coach Sho Fukushima said. "I believe he is one of the top-three
gymnasts in the ECAC. The exciting part is that he has not come close
to doing everything he is capable of this year and will do a lot
better as the season goes on. I just hope under his leadership that
our team will continue to improve."
Finnegan captured the all-around competition in Navy's two meets
last weekend. On Friday, Finnegan won the all-around against
Massachusetts with a score of 50.65 and was victorious again Sunday,
posting a score of 50.45 against William & Mary. He won the rings
against UMass (8.70) and William & Mary (8.75) along with the pommel
horse (8.35) against the Tribe.
Navy returns to action Sunday at 3 p.m. when the Mids travel to
Harrisonburg, Va., to compete in the James Madison Invitational.
