Attention all you sports minded Navy parents! We will have the mens
gymanstics team in the So Cal area on Saturday, Febraury 17th at Aliso Viejo
High School (2800 Terrace View Drive, Aliso Viejo).

Maybe we could go down there and support our team? I understand the other
academies will be represented....

Sunday, February 4th - William & Mary (200.55) and Navy (198.50) at
James Madison University (181.15)

The meet went back and forth between Navy and William & Mary, but in
the end, William & Mary won by 2.05 points. Tripp Glasgow took 2nd
on pommel horse, 3rd on parallel bars, and 3rd on high bar; Nick
Willet took 3rd on pommel horse and 3rd on vault; Dan Finnegan took
2nd on still rings and high bar, and 1st all-around; Andy Helchinger
took 2nd on parallel bars, and tied for 3rd on still rings with Joe
Brading. Drew Barker took 2nd all-around.

Look at the team scores - we tied on pommel horse and high bar, and
gave up the other events. We parents thought the judges were 'a bit
harsh' at times, but the mids told us that the judges were 'just
about right.' Such honor!

The details:

My thanks to Joe Finnegan for keeping us up to date on
the gymnastics team. He is being too humble in not
relating the honor bestowed on his son, Dan, who was
named Gymnast of the Week in the ECAC leaque per the
following:

Navy Men's Gymnast Dan Finnegan Honored by ECAC

CENTERVILLE, Mass. -- Navy gymnast Dan Finnegan
(Jr./Richmond, Va.) was named the Eastern College
Athletic Conference (ECAC)Gymnast of the Week the league
announced Tuesday.

"He is certainly deserving of this honor no question,"
Navy head coach Sho Fukushima said. "I believe he is one
of the top-three gymnasts in the ECAC. The exciting part
is that he has not come close to doing everything he is
capable of this year and will do a lot better as the
season goes on. I just hope under his leadership that our
team will continue to improve."

Finnegan captured the all-around competition in Navy's
two meets last weekend. On Friday, Finnegan won the
all-around against Massachusetts with a score of 50.65
and was victorious again Sunday, posting a score of 50.45
against William & Mary. He won the rings against UMass
(8.70) and William & Mary (8.75) along with the pommel
horse (8.35) against the Tribe.

Saturday marks the last home swim meet of the year and also the "last" home
swim meet @ Lejeune Hall for the Firstie Men's swim team. After four years at
the Academy we would like to give them all a great sendoff!

The Firstie Swim Team Parents have arranged a tribute to the seniors and will
have a cake and sodas for the team and a short program.

We encourage all who are interested to attend and to cheer on this motivated
group of young midshipmen.

The meet is at Lejeune Hall at 2 P.M. on Saturday against the Princeton
Tigers.

Our last regular season meet will be the following weekend at New York City
against Columbia and than the EISL Championships at West Point on March
1st, 2nd, and 3rd.

Go NAVY!

usna-sports-digest Friday, February 9 2001 Volume 2001 : Number 103The
baseball parents probably know about his already but the annual Service
Academies Spring Classic baseball tournament will will take place from 23-25
February in Millington, TN (just outside of Memphis) at USA Baseball
Stadium. I think at one time this was the training site for the USA Olympic
Baseball team. Anyway, the schedule looks like this:

23 FEB
1000: Air Force vs. Army
1300: Air Force vs. Navy
1600: Navy vs. University of Memphis

24 FEB
1000: Navy vs. Army
1300: Army vs. University of Memphis
1600: Air Force vs. University of Memphis

25 FEB
1000: Consolation Game
1300: Championship Game

Last year, in addition to relatives and friends of Mids, the stands were
full of local Navy people (Millington is home of the Navy Personnel Command
and Navy Recruiting Command) who all had a good time rooting for the
victorious Mids in the Navy/Army game. Hope you can make it this year. If
anyone needs info on the local area I would be happy to help

for those Southern Calif parents, just want you to know that you missed out
on a great opportunity to watch the navy gymnastics team at a local high
school. It was an "all academy" meet, so army & air force were there too.
there were quite a few navy parents there and it was an exciting match. Navy
ended up losing to army at a fraction of a point, it was so close they
stopped showing toward the end of the match. We do not have a gymnist on the
team, but thoroughly enjoyed the meet. One thing that was really neat after
the meet, local youngsters involved in gymnastics had the academy gymnists
signing shirts, programs, paper, whatever. This is one of those "wish I had a
camera" moment. congratulations to the Navy gymnastics and I encourage other
parents to try & attend sporting events even if they do not have a mid
participating. We met a company mate of our son's and he was very happy that
we came. The southern Calif Parent's club had a banner there, which the mids
really appreciated. If you have a son/daughter that is invovled in a
sport, please try & post when they will be in different towns. Maybe the
parent club will put out a notice to it's members like our club did.

Saturday, February 17th - Army (200.65), Navy (200.50), and Air Force
(198.60) at Aliso Viejo, California - the All Academy Championship!

What a heartbreaker! As a parent mailed me off-list, "a dismount,
grip or toe point would have made the difference." Special thanks to
Debbie Richardson and the Southern California Parent's Club for
supporting the guys - and thanks for Sunday's posting to the list.

Joe Brading took 3rd on parallel bars, 2nd on high bar, and 2nd
all-around; Dan Finnegan took 2nd on pommel horse and still rings,
and 1st all-around; Andy Helchinger took 2nd on vault; and Nick
Willet took 3rd on floor.  Navy won pommel horse and parallel bars;
Army won vault and high bar (and the meet), and Air Force won floor
and rings.

Sharing info received last week from the Alumni Association:

Dear Presidents and members,

Here is ticket information for the 2001 season - it is similar to last
year's policy. The Superintendent has recommended that focus groups be
formed this fall to determine future ticket policy changes that will better
accommodate parents, alumni & staff. Most parents are already aware of this
- please note that in order to qualify for 4 tickets for the Army/Navy game
as an NAAA member you must apply for membership prior to the beginning of the
year.

Feel free to contact the ticket office with additional questions at the
number listed below.

Parent Program Office
U.S. Naval Academy Foundation
Tel: (410) 293-1950
Fax: (410) 293-1940

2001 Army-Navy Football Ticket Plan Announced

The ticket plan for this year's Army-Navy football game on December
1 at Philadelphia's Veterans Stadium will be similar to last year's, with
some minor adjustments. The Naval Academy will continue to use a system
of prioritized purchasing opportunities and individual order limits to
facilitate the purchasing of its ticket allotment.
Implementation of the 2001 ticket plan will begin on March 5 with
Army-Navy ticket orders being accepted in conjunction with the purchase of
season tickets. The size of the Army-Navy order will directly correlate
to the number of season tickets purchased (ie: 5 season tickets equals 5
Army-Navy tickets).
NAAA members can begin purchasing Army-Navy tickets on April 2 and will be
allowed a maximum of four. All members of the NAAA purchasing tickets in
this window must have been on the active rolls by January 1, 2001, with
the new exception of active members of the USNA Alumni Association and
USNA Faculty & Staff who will have until April 2 to join the NAAA.
Midshipmen, as associate members of the NAAA can purchase a maximum of two
tickets beginning April 16.
Beginning May 1, members of the Alumni Association and USNA faculty &
staff, who are not current members of the NAAA will have the opportunity
to purchase a maximum of two tickets, based on availability.
If you desire to sit together as a group, you can call the ticket office
and request a group account number. The group leader will be instructed
to communicate this account number to all members of the group and ask
them to give this number to the ticket office representative when placing
an order. All groups will be allocated by the priority of the lowest
ranking group member.
Last year, a few fans of the Army-Navy game voiced concern that they lived
too far away to purchase and utilize season tickets in order to qualify
for the first buying window. In response, we will continue to offer the
Admiral's Fleet program which allows interested fans to purchase season
tickets and then donate them to area underprivileged youth who otherwise
would not have the means to attend a Navy home football game. Purchase of
Admiral's Fleet tickets would qualify an individual to purchase the same
number of Army-Navy tickets during the season ticket-holder buying window.
Once again, our aim is to provide the most fair and equitable method of
distributing our Army-Navy ticket allotment to season ticket holders,
alumni, faculty, staff, parents and fans. It continues to be our goal to
put tickets in the hands of our loyal fans and USNA family. Please direct
all questions to the Navy Ticket Office at 1-800-US4-NAVY.

 2001 Army-Navy Ticket Plan Summary

Hi,

I am in Virginia visiting my brother, after a great weekend watching Navy B Team Club Hockey. The tournament started Friday night, in Dahlgren Hall, as Navy played against George Mason University. Navy played a great game, and so did the other team. Navy won, 5 to 4. On Saturday Navy played Gettysburg College and within the first few minutes Navy was down 2 to 0. However, Navy battled back and tied the game. Then, each team would get one goal and be answered back by a goal from the other team. It was a real nail-biter, and at the end of regulation time the score was tied, 5 to 5. A period of sudden death overtime began, and within about a minute Navy scored, and won this round. On Sunday Navy played Georgetown in the finals. Georgetown won, 3 to 0, but the stat that told how the game really went was that the shots on goal were tied, 24 to 24. It was an amazing game, and Navy played really well. Georgetown had an incredible goalie, but Navy never let down and put in!
!
 incredible effort.

I had a great time with all the hockey parents who were there. They were a wonderful, enthusiastic group, and we all felt very proud of the Navy team. It made for a special weekend, one that I will never forget.

Hello!
I have a question about crew training in Oak Ridge, TN over spring =
break. I know the team may not know when they will be released until =
they are there. I have to request off work two weeks in advance, so =
would I be safe in requesting off that Thursday to pick up Troy? I will =
be driving 6 hours one-way from southern Indiana.

Any advice, etc that any of you who "have been there" or "are going to =
be there" can give me would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you so much.=20
