Navy Sports fans,

The Navy Powerlifting Team has 17 lifters with previous totals high enough
to qualify to participate in the Collegiate National Championship meet which
is being held in Alexandria, LA next weekend.

LSU is the sponsoring school this year and the meet will be held in the
Holiday Inn Convention Center located at 701 4th Street Alexandria LA. All
of the Women's weight classes will lift on Saturday along with the Mens'
weight classes up through 165 Lbs. The rest of the Men's classes will lift
on Sunday.

Navy traditionally has done very well at this competition and stands to fair
well again this year. Eight of the Navy lifters are ranked in the top five
within their respective weight classes. Midn2c Julia Loya is the current USA
and WORLD Champion and may possible set yet another record at this meet.

If you live near by come on out and help us cheer them to victory.

Don & Anita Sweger

To all Sports fans...

Yesterday afternoon, the Navy Men's Basketball Team advanced to the Patriot
League Basketball Championship. Because Navy is seeded #2, they will be
playing #1 Holy Cross AT Holy Cross. The game will be this Friday, March
9th at 4:30pm at the Hart Center on the campus of Holy Cross in Worchester,
MA. The winner receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

Mike and I received a personal appeal from the ticket office for our
USNA-Net family to spread the word about the game. It's typically a full
house for games at Holy Cross which means that we need lots of Navy fans.
Tickets can be purchased through the Navy Ticket Office at 1-800-US4-NAVY.
Adults are $10 and Students $5. All seating is reserved, and the ticket
office has a block of seats to sell behind the Navy bench.

Spring Break begins this day, so most Mids already have concrete plans that
will take them elsewhere so they will not be able to find their way to MA to
cheer for their fellow Mids. If you are in the position to make the added
effort to attend this game...please do so. It would mean a lot to the team
to have support in the stands!

Sandi

Thanks to Sandi for the encouragement to support our men's basketball team
this Friday. It tells a tale that in the pastfew years of finals playoffs,
our men have won every contest at home but are 0 for 2 on the road.

I cannot count how many times my son has told me what an enormous difference
it makes to have fans yelling for you when you are on the floor. If there is
ANY way that you can be there for that game, it will mean more than you can
guess to our team! For those of us who are just too darn far away, we
appreciate those of you who have been there at the road games so very, very
much!

The game will be televised on ESPN at 4:30, EST, and wouldn't it be amazing
to go to the NCAA tourney! Even though that means not seeing our 'little'
son over Spring Break, I hope it happens!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

God Bless our team and Thanks again!!

Subject: Petition
If you decide not to forward this, please send it back to me. I know this is
too true and so dreadful. Oprah had a show about this atrocity. This is an
actual petition, and "signatures" will be lost if you drop the line. Please
take 3 minutes out of your life to do your part.
Madhu, the government of Afghanistan, is waging a war upon women. Since the
Taliban took power in 1996, women have had to wear burqua and have been
beaten and stoned in public for not having the proper attire, even if this
means simply not having the mesh covering in front of their eyes. One woman
was beaten to death by an angry mob of fundamentalists for
accidentally exposing her arm(!)while she was driving. Another was stoned
to death for trying to leave the country with a man that was not a relative.
Women are not allowed to work or even go out in public without a male
relative; professional women such as professors, translators, doctors,
lawyers, artists and writers have been forced from their jobs and restricted
to their homes. Homes where a woman is present must have their windows
painted so that she can never be seen by outsiders.
They must wear silent shoes so that they are never heard. Women live in
fear of their lives for the slightest misbehaviour. Because they cannot
work, those without male relatives or husbands are either starving to death
or begging the street, even if they hold Ph.D.s. Depression is becoming so
widespread that it has reached emergency levels. There is no way in such an
extreme Islamic society to know the suicide rate with certainty, but relief
workers are estimating that the suicide rate among women must be
extraordinarily high: those who cannot find proper medication and treatment
for severe depression and
would rather take their lives than live in such conditions. At one of the
rare hospitals for women, a reporter found still, nearly
lifeless bodies lying motionless on top of beds, wrapped in their burqua,
unwilling to speak, eat, or do anything, but slowly
wasting away. Others have gone mad and were seen crouched in corners,
perpetually rocking or crying, most of them in fear. When what little
medication that is left finally runs out, one doctor is considering leaving
these women in front of the president's residence as a form of protest. It
is at the point where the term "human rights violations" has become an
understatement. Husbands have the power of life and death over their women
relatives, especially their wives, but an angry mob has just as much right
to stone or beat a woman, often to death, for exposing an inch of flesh or
offending them in the slightest way.
Women enjoyed relative freedom: to work, to dress generally as they wanted,
and to drive and appear in public alone until only 1996. The rapidity of
this transition is the main reason for the depression and suicide; Women who
were once educators or doctors or simply used to basic human freedoms are
now severely restricted and treated as subhuman in the name of right-wing
fundamentalist Islam. It is not their tradition or 'culture,' but it is
alien to them, and it is extreme even for those cultures where
fundamentalism is the rule. Everyone has a right to a tolerable human
existence, even if they are women in a Muslim country. If we can threaten
military force in Kosovo the name of human rights for the sake of ethnic
Albanians, citizens of the world can certainly express peaceful outrage at
the oppression, murder and injustice committed against women by the
Taleeban.

STATEMENT: In signing this, we agree that the current treatment of women in
Afghanistan is completely UNACCEPTABLE and deserves action by the United
Nations and that the current situation overseas will not be tolerated.
Women's Rights is not a small issue anywhere, and it is UNACCEPTABLE for
women in 2001 to be treated as subhuman and as so much
property. Equality and human decency is a fundamental RIGHT, not a freedom
to be granted, whether one lives in Afghanistan or elsewhere.

To all USNA-Sports Members...

A moment ago, one of our members sent through a "petition" message about
Madhu, the government of Afghanistan.

Sending this sort of message to one of our lists was a GROSS VIOLATION of
our Rules of Operation.

The message was a Call to Action - which is forbidden on our listservers.

It did NOT support our Mission Statement!
It was NOT about Navy Parenting!
It was NOT about Sports!

All too often, messages of this type are hoaxes and sending them on just
serves to proliferate the hoax.

THERE ARE TO BE NO DISCUSSIONS OF THIS MESSAGE OR ITS CONTENT ON OUR LISTS.
We are a Parent Mentoring organization - NOT an activist group. PERIOD!

Hello,

After receiving the schedule of the Women's Lacrosse from my daughter, I
realize the team you are looking to support is NOT the Women's team. I do
apologize for the assumption. It would be nice though, to have some of the
Sponsor Moms come out to support them as well. They are a group of very hard
working talented women who could use, at least, a home support group. In
fact, last year they won Nationals!! Can you tell I'm very proud (smile).
If you take note they will also be hosting the womens Army team (which they
beat up at West Point last year 17 -9, in an action packed game from start to
finish).

Again, if this way not your intent, I do apoligize. On the other hand if
you'd like to come out and support our female Mids please do so, they would
love to know someone cares. And no, they do not have tailgates after the
games but would appreciate anything that was contributed.

Here's their schedule:

In reponse to several notes from parents, I guess I have to clarify my
message about the Club Lacrosse team. As of now, I am informed there are
FOUR Lacrosse teams at the Academy, and I'm wondering if there is a
fifth......
Varsity Lacrosse is on a level with Varsity Basketball. There are men's
and women's teams with separate coaches. There is also a J-V Lacrosse team,
and though I KNOW there is a men's J-V team, I'm not sure about women. (But
if I were a betting Sponsor Mom, I'd bet there IS women's J-V.)
The team to which I was referring in the original posting was CLUB
Lacrosse. All male midshipmen on this team. I think there may be several
sports on the CLUB level. This is not intra-murals. The Club teams do play
other colleges and universities. Maybe it's a different kind of league. Any
clarification to all of us would be appreciated.
Tailgates are organized by parents and sponsors of the particular teams
-- folks who live in the Annapolis area or those who can get here regularly fo
r games. I have been to two Sprint Football tailgates and one Club Lacrosse
tailgate. Since none of these games are played at the Stadium, the tailgates
are on the Yard.
Hope this has been informative. Now you know all I know! Joyce Hoffer

hoping for some advice from a cross country parent. My son Ben will be in the
class of '05 and is cross country and track runner. We are wondering about
shoes - he is pretty particular and wondering if can bring his own shoes for
training purposes or will he have to wear standard issue? Any other advice on
how a x country kid should prepare for Plebe summer would be appreciated. It
terrifies me when I read about kids losing weight during plebe summer...he
has none to spare! Thanks in advance!

Hi Jeanne,

My son, Ron, a plebe this year, ran cross country this fall at the Academy
and is on the track team now. As you'll soon find out from the school,
plebes can bring almost nothing with them on I-day and that includes running
shoes.

At some point in plebe summer, he found out he could have his own running
shoes, so he wrote us and asked us to order some from a mail order catalog
that we buy a lot from (his dad is a runner, too.) That way the catalog
company could just ship the shoes directly to him.

Your son's running will be a big help for plebe summer. In fact, my son
ended plebe summer feeling a little out of shape for cross country because
plebe summer requirements were actually less demanding than what his high
coaches had required!

And believe it or not, he didn't lose any weight. I was really worried
about that myself before he left, because he couldn't spare an ounce. I
know lots of kids do lose weight during plebe summer, but it's not a given.

Welcome aboard.

It is my understanding that Club sports (at any university) are not
funded by the school. Most significantly, this means that there is
no paid coach. I would guess that the participants probably pay for
their own travel, uniforms, and other expenses.

Club teams do not compete against NCAA teams. That is, the women's
gymnastics _club_ at USNA would not compete against the women's
gymnastics _team_ from Air Force. However, there are _club_ national
championships. I don't know who or how they're organized, or how
individual contests are arranged.

An addition to the club sports discussion...Triathlon is a club sport at
Navy, and they indeed did compete against Army last fall, at Army, and beat
them. They also competed against other colleges in a triathlon held in
Roanoke in the fall. Because it is a club sport, our athletes found many of
the participants to be graduate students, as well as the collegiate level.
Navy Triathlon will compete in early May, 2001 at Wildflower/Collegiate
Nationals, in CA against other colleges, and I know that Air Force currently
has a team registered. For Navy, there is no coach, but an O-Rep who
oversees the team, and the team has a male and female captain (Steve
Zagorski '01 and Elise Eastman '01). For the most part, they run on a small
Navy Club budget, and do have to personally finance at least part of their
adventures from pocket. Donations can be made to USNA, and earmarked for
specific clubs, and that certainly enhances the operating monies. Go Navy
Triathlon!

Hi Jeanne,

My son, Ron, a plebe this year, ran cross country this fall at the Academy
and is on the track team now. As you'll soon find out from the school,
plebes can bring almost nothing with them on I-day and that includes running
shoes.

At some point in plebe summer, he found out he could have his own running
shoes, so he wrote us and asked us to order some from a mail order catalog

hoping for some advice from a cross country parent.

Go Navy
Triathlon!

<<How do you become an active member of the NAAA? Also, do the parents of

You can join NAAA by following the link at navysports.com. Anyone can buy
season tickets but as far as I know there is no special priority for parents
of football players. Players can request complementary tickets for friends
and/or family members for every game. Varsity players can request up to 4
tickets, others get 2. These are assigned on a game by game basis. The
player must present a list of the recipients, and each recipient has to
present ID at the player will-call gate and sign for his/her ticket. Also,
if a player requests tickets and they are not picked up, he risks losing
this privilege, so you have to be sure you will use them. Hope this helps.
Sorry, you still have to scramble if you want extra tickets for Army/Navy.

I received this correction to my earlier post and thought that it should go
out to all:

<<If the players dress for the game they get four tickets, whether they are
varsity or JV or the "Mad Hatter." If they don't dress for the game, for
whatever reason, varsity or not, they get two tickets for the game. No
preference for player's parents for season tickets.>>

Thanks for the clarification.

Last year was our first Army/Navy Game. By coincidence the hotel we booked
was the Navy "sponsoring" hotel. The hotel was decorated in Navy colors and
the staff had on Navy shirts. It was great fun.

This year we would like to have the same experience.

Can I ask which hotel Navy will be using? (Or is that against Net rules?)

If you know I'll take initials! Or private reply.

I've looked on a map and the majority of hotels are at the airport. I'm not
sure how far that is from the stadium, or if there would be a shuttle to the
game.

If you could help, I'd appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

The International Pistol team just returned from Atlanta, Georgia with the
National Championship in hand!!! All shooters performed solidly and the
team placed in the top three in all three guns. They also came home with 13
All American awards! We were at the competition with them and were very
proud of the support they gave each other! This is a great group of men and
women and deserve all the accolades they can get. Unfortunately, since they
are only club status at Navy (competing with varsity teams from other
schools) they will not be given the recognition that they deserve so I just
thought that I would wave their banner a little. If anyone would like to
send congrats, you can visit their web site ( www.usna.edu/pistol ) and
contact them that way.
