Well, welcome to another crew season and from the results of yesterdays racing we are off to a blistering start. This is the 1st call for anybody going to the regatta at Princeton next saturday. The boys did not have anyone up in Ithaca to organize a tailgate for them so hopefully we can get something together for next week. Princeton is coming off a tough loss yesterday so they will be out for blood so our guys will need our support before , during and after the races. Anyone planning to attend please e-mail us privately so we can co-ordinate the tailgate. Thanks

Hello to all,

We are new to the women's soccer team (and our first letter here!) and
anxious to hear any information you may have to share.
I am having a bit of a crisis thinking of how I won't be able to see her play
and am wondering if there are many parents from the west coast that attend
games? I have a schedule of the games and wonder if there are specific games
that are of the "not to miss" category?
We have collectively decided to let Katie go to I Day by herself. This wasn't
an easy decision, but because she's the oldest of four girls, we wanted to be
able to have everyone go to PPW. I've been searching the internet scouting
airfares and would love to have any kind of a heads up on any important
dates/games I should be aware of.
Please feel free to email me ~ maybe with everyone's input I'll be a big girl
and stop all the blubbering!

Thanks!

Just thought I'd let you know that I got to see the women's Rugby Team play
this weekend. It was a surprise to find out that they were going to be in
the Roanoke VA area this past Sat. & Sun. Both the men and women were here
to help determine seedings for the national tournament (or so I was told).
I didn't get tosee the men play but I heard that they won both of their
matches by large margins. The girls won on Sat. but lost on Sun. I feel
like I jinxed them! They played in a downpour that lasted the entire match.
The score was 13-3 and our mids were knocking at the door at the end. They
were playing Princeton. I have to admit, it's a game you would have to
love. One mid made an open field tackle (to prevent a score) that would be
the envy of any free safety!! The girls were tough and worked very hard in
difficult conditions. If there are any rugby parents reading this you
should know it was a rare treat for me to get to see them play.....wet shoes
and all. I wish I had known they were going to be here sooner so I could
have made better plans.

Go Navy!

Yes, the men did win both their games - 55-3 (or thereabouts) on Saturday -
don't remember who they played, a school from somewhere in Pennsylvania -
and 42-24 (or thereabouts) over Penn State (a Saturday victor over Virginia
Tech) on Sunday. The men now play Army next weekend (at USNA) and have a
week off before traveling to Ohio State, Columbus, OH, to play in a "Sweet
16" round tournament.

Our son did mention how terrible the weather was, adding that the second
men's game (a "loser's bracket" game not involving Navy) on Sunday was
cancelled due to lightning striking the field.

We spent the week in Annapolis but, due to a very early Sunday AM flight
from BWI, we were unable to attend the Roanoke tournament. When we made our
reservations, we knew there was a tournament, but only that it was going to
be held somewhere in Virginia. We probably could have gone had it been
anywhere - there really isn't anywhere in the whole state farther from
Annapolis than Roanoke.

Hello to All:
I've been "lurking" on the Parents-Net
for awhile now. I've been following all
the traffic & correspondence & must say
that I'm thoroughly impressed by the
degree of commitment & support that
everybody seems to offer the Mids &
other parents.

I'd like to take this opportunity to
introduce us. Corinn gave her decision
much careful consideration. After
attending Summer Seminar & Carin
Gabarra's Soccer Camp last summer, and
then taking advantage of the NCAA 48 Hr
visit, she was convinced that USNA was
for her. Corinn has accepted an
appointment from John Doolittle of the
4th Congr. Dist. here in Fair Oaks, CA
(suburb of Sacramento). She is now
eager to graduate from Mira Loma HS
(International Baccalaureate) and begin
her new life.
She is not at all certain of her
ultimate Service Selection or even her
Major. Those will completely be her own
decision (...although there is a long
line of Naval Wings of Gold on my side
of the family). Her immediate goal is
get prepared for Plebe Summer & to be
ready for Coach Gabarra's Varsity
Soccer.

Her sister (Megan) & I will miss her
greatly, but we will be somewhat
contented by knowing that she will be
doing exactly what she has chosen & is
on the threshold of an exciting &
productive future.

We look forward to meet as many of you
as we can; especially those USNA
families here in the Sacramento &
Northern CA area.

Many thanks to Ed Grinnell, our Blue &
Gold Officer, and Coach Gabarra for all
their support & professionalism.

Please feel free to contact us at
<theoconnors@earthlink.net>
Sincerely, Chris O'Connor
ps: I'm going through the apparent
typical delema about to/ NOT attend I
Day, but PPW is a definate "no brainer";
even for me.

The N-star listing says Navy baseball won the N* against Army earlier this
year at the Memphis Tournament, and other articles say Navy Baseball plays
for the N* this weekend at WestPoint. My question is: Can each team win more
than one N* each season or is there a set event for each sport that is
designated as an N* game?

Dear Navy Track Fans,

For those of you wondering about the men's track meet against Army today ,
we received this email from our son:

> "The meet was a nail biter. It came dowm to the next two last event, discus.
> Thank God Coach Cantello coaches the throwers well. We won 102 to Army's 101
after we lost the last event the 4x400m... Weather was pretty yucky,

The rugby team beat Army 49-12. (Apparently, Army was ranked #3 and Navy
was ranked #5.) I didn't get any more info as our mid is not particularly
talkative when it comes to providing info for dissemination to the "nets."

My throat was sore from yelling "Go Navy, Beat Army" this past Saturday at
the track meet. The men's meet was a nail bitter - down to the last 2
events...but Navy pulled it out by 1 point. It was sweet revenge after the
loss to Army in the indoor season. The best part was watching the entire
team celebrate their shared victory at the end. Each mid had contributed to
that victory, and they all shared the accolades...acknowledging one
another's contributions...taking modest credit for their own. It was a
testimony to their sportsmanship and teamwork.

The weather was not so sweet...cool, then colder, then windy, and by the
time the women competed the weather was not just cold but also a bit
drizzly. The women were inspired, however, and also won...by a bit larger
margin.

If you haven't had the chance to attend an Army-Navy athletic event, I
recommend that you do so. These competitions take on added significance for
athletes and spectators alike. (I also had the fun of catching the
Army-Navy XC meet this fall.)

P.S. I promised the plebe who placed second in the women's steeplechase that
I'd send greetings to her parents. (We met on the plane returning from
I-Day) She looked great, was happy with her finish in the race, and was
headed to her sponsor parents' home when we talked with her. Hope to see
you at Herndon.

who play on the Varsity football AND baseball teams. Craig C, Jake H, Brad

Dear friends,

Well we are back from the Women's Sweet Sixteen Rugby Tournament held in

Orlando, FL on April 21 & 22. The weather was great--blue skies & 80+
degrees. But the real story is the performance of the Naval Academy
Women's Rugby team. They arrived Friday late evening (many other teams
had come in two days before to practice and get settled in), played
their first game on Saturday at 1:45 in 85 degree temp. They beat
Humboldt Univ. (from California). They then played Penn State
(defending National Champs) on Sunday. While the final score was not a
win for Navy the women proved themselves all winners in their tireless
play-never giving up, playing as a team, supporting each other, giving
their all, and taking the loss graciously. We were all so very proud of

them.

Now the second part of the story--the Rugby team had tremendous support
from so many parents. First were the player's parents who traveled from

all over the country to Orlando--Minnesota, Michigan, Ohio, New
Hampshire, Virginia, Maryland & Florida. Second were the large number
of Midshipmen parents from the Central Florida Parents Club. They
provided the team with all the water, ice, gatorade, fruit, and snacks
for the two days. The final day they came with bath towels, shampoo and

soap for the ladies to clean-up prior to dressing back in their whites
to head back to Annapolis. Parents were waving Navy flags, dressed in
Navy apparel and gave them all out support.
A big heartfelt Thank you to the Central Florida Parents Club for your
physical and moral support. I know the ladies and the player's parents
can not thank you enough. I have read about this kind of support on the

net, and now I have seen it in action.

A final big thank you to all who support USNA Club Sports(including
coaches). The Mids work very hard to represent the Academy in their
respective programs.

The Navy men's rugby team won both matches (in the sweet 16's) last weekend
at Ohio State and will compete for the national title in the Final Four, May
5-6, in Virginia Beach, VA. The first match was a Navy win against Oregon
State - 24-16, the second was against Cal Poly (an upset winner over Ohio
State on Saturday) - 30-14.

On Saturday, May 5, Navy will play Cal-Berkeley (the perennial National
champion who qualified for the Final Four with a 77-5 victory over Virginia
Tech and a 69-6 victory over Air Force). In the other semifinal, Penn State
plays Army. The winners will meet on Sunday.

Navy didn't get the best draw - especially when you consider that they have
beaten both Penn State and Army this year.

Perhaps the US Navy presence in Virginia Beach will help.

By the way, Arkansas State University will be playing for the Division II
championship, against Baylor, on Saturday afternoon, after the Division I
semi-final games. (Just a little "home town" news for the uninformed.)

Dennis, I'm pretty sure that Southwest flies from BWI
to Albany. I would think that would be the best way.
There are shuttles to BWI. Not sure once you get to
Albany how to get to West Point.

Good Luck,

Sports Fans:

Today's front page Capital headline reads
            "Something WICKET this way comes"
because the 28th Company Midshipmen BEAT the St. John's Croquet team
yesterday 3-2 in the 19th Annual match! Our men (were there any WOMEN on the
28 Co. team??), dressed nattily in white shoes and pants, white blazeers and
dark ties, "stunned their eclectically dressed counterparts....."

The article goes on to state that it is not so much the MATCH, but the
SPECTATORS who are a great part of the spectacle of the day, coming dressed
in bowler hats, or long dresses -- with parasols.

Nashville Update:

The 2nd Annual Country Music Marathon was held in Nashville on Saturday
morning - with 10,000 participants - it was a sight to see !!! The weather
couldn't have been more perfect....cool morning temps and maybe a little on
the "too-warm" side by time some of the runners completed their 26.2 run with
mid 80 temps.

The TN USNA Parent Club helped to provide rides for the participating Mids
and their traveling sponsor throughout the week-end & we were thrilled to
feed and sooth them at our tailgater after they each crossed the finish line.

They each did a fantastic job!!!!!!! If you'd like to see more on the
event....visit the following webpage @ www.cmmarathon.com

GO NAVY RUNNERS!!!!!! YOU MADE US ALL PROUD!!!!

One of our Tennessee Class of 2001 Mid's proudly displayed on the back of his
