I was at the game and it was fun and enlightening.

This was my third spring game. This time I got to meet and speak to Coach
Weatherbie and Coach Lentz. Both charming gentlemen. I met Coach W during
the festivities prior to the game and Coach Lentz afterwards at the picnic.
It was good to get a feeling of the personalities of the men who are
coaching our mids.

I had spent the morning with my son and when he had to leave to get ready ,
had breakfast at Chick and Ruths in Annapolis. If you havn't eaten there,
GO, next time your in town. I arrived at the stadium about 11 to partake in
the "goings on". Watched some warmups, then the team came out to mingle and
sign autographs. They handed out poster size schedules at the gate. Also
got rosters of the defense and offense. These were a big improvement over
the last two years. Card stock and an explanation of the scoring rules
along with the team listings. I entered the drawings they had, but of
course.....

The mids went back to the locker room around noon and were soon back on the
field to warm up. Much fun to watch. The game started promptly at one.
The whole game was offense against defense as opposed to previous years when
they made two teams of offense and defense. The defense scored 1 point for
not allowing the offense to gain a first down in 3 downs, 3 points for a
turnover and 6 for a touchdown. The offense scored 6 for a touchdown and 3
for a field goal.

Knowing that, and the final score being 25 to 12 in favor of the defense,
you can pretty much tell how the game went. Know too that the all but 3 of
the defenses points were scored on stops. It appears as if the defense is
grasping the new scheme very well. They looked strong and I think everyone
will be pleased with the variety of formations that will appear in the fall.
As for the offense, they suffered a lot of jitters (a lot of dropped
passes)and I think there was a lot more pressure on them. I still think the
improvements will show and everyone will also enjoy the variety of
formations the offense will run. Shotgun! Formations without backs and a
lot of receivers! They only ran the option a few times! Just a lot of
variety....I'm sure the coaches will know what to run against each team they
play.

After the game, we had barbecue, chicken, baked beans, rolls, pasta salad
and drinks. Very good. Got to talk to other parents and Coach Lentz. He
has a great sense of humor.

All-in-all it was a beautiful day for us football addicts. A good time was
had by all!!!

On Saturday (May 5), Penn State beat Army 27-25 and defending national
champion Cal-Berkeley defeated Navy 34-27 (after having a 22-0 half-time
lead) in the semifinals of the 2001 Collegiate Rugby National Championship
tournament.

This afternoon, Navy defeated Army 34-20 (for the second time this year) in
the consolation (3rd place) match and Cal-Berkeley 86 annihilated Penn State
86-11 to win their 12th consecutive national championship.

I guess that proves that, although the mids will forever be listed as #3,
they were the second best collegiate team in the country this year.

(As an aside, on Saturday, Baylor defeated Arkansas State, 29-16, for the
Division II national championship.)

SCHEDULING CONFLICT FORCES ARMY-NAVY GAME
TO MOVE IN 2002
Game Will Return To Philadelphia In 2003

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Due to a scheduling conflict with the city of Philadelphia,
the 2002 (NOT THIS YEAR, FOLKS!!!) Army-Navy football game will be moved to
another venue, it was announced today by Army Director of Athletics Rick
Greenspan and Navy Director of Athletics Jack Lengyel.

The 2002 game, originally scheduled for Dec. 7 at Veterans Stadium, was to be
the final Army-Navy classic played under an existing long-term contract with
the city of Philadelphia.

The Philadelphia Convention & Visitors Bureau (PCVB) scheduled a major
medical convention for the same weekend as the 103rd Army-Navy Classic. The
convention would require the use of approximately 8,000 of the city's 10,000
available hotel rooms. Based on recent trends, the Army-Navy game requires
the availability of 5,000 hotel rooms in order to satisfy requirements by
schools, fans and game officials. Due to an inadequate number of hotel rooms
available for usage by Army and Navy and its constituencies, it was agreed to
move the game.

The PCVB recently made the Academies aware of the conflict. Following brief
discussions, it was agreed that moving the site of the 2002 Army-Navy game
would be in the best interests of all parties involved. Army and Navy agreed
to a new one-year contract, which would place the 2003 Army-Navy game in
Philadelphia in the Eagles new facility, which is scheduled to open in August
of that year.

"It is with deep regret that we need to move the 2002 Army-Navy game out of
the city of Philadelphia," Greenspan stated. "But in light of recent
developments regarding hotel availability, we did not feel that holding this
great game in Philadelphia during the first weekend in December 2002, would
provide the cadets, midshipmen, fans, families and school officials with a
most positive experience."

"We are pleased to have the opportunity to return to the city of Philadelphia
in 2003 and to play in the Eagles new state-of-the art football facility,"
said Lengyel. Officials from the Academies are negotiating with several
venues for the Army-Navy game in 2002. Army and Navy officials are also in
the process of reviewing facilities for the year 2004 and beyond.

SCHEDULING CONFLICT FORCES ARMY-NAVY GAME
TO MOVE IN 2002
Game Will Return To Philadelphia In 2003

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Due to a scheduling conflict with the city of Philadelphia,
the 2002 Army-Navy football game will be moved to another venue, it was
announced today by Army Director of Athletics Rick Greenspan and Navy
Director of Athletics Jack Lengyel.
The 2002 game, originally scheduled for Dec. 7 at Veterans Stadium, was to
be the final Army-Navy classic played under an existing long-term contract
with the city of Philadelphia.
Due to an inadequate number of hotel rooms
available for usage by Army and Navy and its constituencies, it was agreed
to move the game.
The PCVB recently made the Academies aware of the conflict. Following brief
discussions, it was agreed that moving the site of the 2002 Army-Navy game
would be in the best interests of all parties involved. Army and Navy agreed
to a new one-year contract, which would place the 2003 Army-Navy game in
Philadelphia in the Eagles new facility, which is scheduled to open in
August of that year.
"We are pleased to have the opportunity to return to the city of
Philadelphia in 2003 and to play in the Eagles new state-of-the art football
facility," said Lengyel.
Officials from the Academies are negotiating with several venues for the
Army-Navy game in 2002. Army and Navy officials are also in the process of
reviewing facilities for the year 2004 and beyond.

During the past week, the flying team participated in a
national competition at Grand Forks Air Force Base, in Grand Forks,
North Dakota. Team members flew two Cessna 172's from Lee airfield
to Grand Forks, a trip of about ten and a half hours. The team
placed ninth overall, out of a field of 26 participants. This
achievement represents the best the team has ever done. They were
also the recipients of the "Most Improved" award. Fifteen team
members participated in this effort, which included exercises such as
precision landings, navigation, aeronautical knowledge, and use of
flight computers. Congratulations to all those who helped make this
such a successful venture.

For all '05 Parents,

You will receive a notice from the Academy sometime after I-Day giving you
the opportunity to purchase two tickets for Army-Navy game. If you wish to
attend this game, DO NOT hesitate to order them. This may be the only
opportunity you may have to get tickets for this game. Last year, when the
extra tickets went on sale to the public - via Ticketmaster - there were
only 500 and they were gone in a matter of seconds. No one that I know of
who tried to get tickets that day was successful. Even if you do not intend
to go to this game, buy the tickets anyway. that way you can offer them to
other members of your local parents club or to members of our lists. While
scalping is forbidden, tickets are in such short supply that your tickets
will enable someone else who would otherwise not be able to, to attend the
game. Our USNA-Net Classifieds page ended up with a few tickets available
to members - but MANY who needed extra tickets last year did not get them.

You can order home game tickets from the Navy Ticket Office:
1-800-US-4-NAVY Your Mid could stop in to buy tickets for you, but I can
assure you, your Plebe will have far better things to do with his/her time
than to spend it trying to get tickets for mom and dad.

If you live close enough and might want to attend all home games, you may
still be able to purchase season tickets (same phone number as above)- and
if you do, you would be able to buy additional tickets to A/N (as many as
you have season tickets.) - but you can also buy for individual games. Some
games actually end up sold out, so if you plan to be there for a home game,
purchase your tickets early. You do not need to purchase for your Mid.
S/He must attend every home game and sit with the Brigade - that means you
will not sit with your Mid in the stands (until Firstie year - one perk of
being a Firstie is that after the March On, the Firsties can sit in the
stands with their parents).

Hope this helps.
