Greetings,

My son is a plebe-2-be with I-day fast approaching. He
was not recruited for his athletics but would like to
try out for the baseball team. Do we take his
equipment with us to I-day or PPW? Thanks in advance
for any advice.

If he's really good it might be useful to have his high school coach write and mail on his own a short letter of intro to the USNA
baseball coach. I guarantee that if he was at all good the USNA coach will find him and try him out... equipment or not...
But taking that stuff to I day can be a real drag since he will have to carry it... along with about 50 lbs of new issue stuff...
it gets real hot on I day... And it can have a downside by advertising that he thinks he is really good... But you could send
it along a few days or weeks later after he has had a chance to establish himself and can tell whether he will need it.

Based upon the information I was given plus my son's experience, your son's
equipment will be taken from him on I-Day and returned to you at Plebe
Parents Weekend (PPW) or sent to you if provisions are made ahead of time.
You are much better off sending it to him after Plebe Summer as he really
will not have storage space to store it safely. Also, remember, the room he
has for plebe summer will change at Brigade Reform when he'll be given
another room in his permament company area. Suggest sending it to him during
the academic year a couple of weeks before baseball tryouts start. if there
are any preliminary tryouts during plebe summer, he will be given whatever
equipment he needs.

We sent my son his soccer cleats at the start of the academic year. However,
instead of trying out for soccer, he tried out for Rugby and played Navy
Rugby (a religion) for fours fast years.

Incidently parents, Navy has excellent and outstanding NCAA Championship
calibur Rugby teams for both men and women; about 4 teams each.

There is a Navy Sports website containing contact and recruitment rules at
 http://www.navysports.com/extras/local/ncaarules.html

It is probably a good idea to have a read through the rules to figure out
what you can (and cannot) do regarding contacting the coach or others,
recruitment, etc. It is mostly written to "us" as Navy fans/supporters,
but the prospective athlete can read between the lines about what they can
do to contact a coach or how to have their current coach contact a Navy
coach.

 Best of luck!

Recruitment applies to a person not already accepted and scheduled to enter. Once one is offered an appointment and has accepted
then the rules regarding coaches etc. change. That is no longer "recruitment" since one is no longer prospective. It is just a
coach canvassing the student body... a whole different ball of wax.

My son has been a varsity tennis player in hs but was not recruited for such at USNA. He has also played rugby. My question is how likely is it to play a varsity or jr. varsity(do they have that?) sport that you were not recruited for. Do you know about try-outs or need to be invited? Water polo or swimming are other interests. I would have laughed at someone asking this question at his hs as a beginning freshman--is that also the situation at the academy?

Any mid can try to "walk-on" for a sport. Even if they were not recruited,
if they have the talent, they can make the team. Recruiting is not a
perfect science. Their likelyhood of making the team is persistance, a
trait I find quite plentiful amongst midshipmen! Do they all make it ? No.
Do all who are recruited make it? No. My son walked-on to play football in
the spring of his plebe year. It looked pretty grim but he was invited back
but played very little on the JV team as a 3rd class. It looked grim but
worked hard and made the varsity squad last year and after spring is now #1
at his position. He will have to work very hard to keep this position. I
am sure all the other sports are this way too! Good luck to any and all who
participate in athletics......BEAT ARMY!!!

The rule is simple... those that were recruited must try out... if they want to... those that were not recruited may try out also and they stand as good a chance of making the team as those that were recruited. So tell him to go give it a shot.

Bill Winney
PS even if those recruited don't make the team... their "scholarship" remains good.

Dear Parents,

My son tried out for football when his roommate suggested that they do so
because they could get away from the detailers for a few peaceful hours.
Nick, Dan's roomie, had also heard that the coaches would let you rest in
air conditioning and feed you great snacks. Dan decided what the heck, and
they went to try out...Dan made the football team, and he played JV football
his plebe year...he was most definitely not recruited, but is a pretty good
athlete. He decided that he would never grow enough to start on Varsity, so
he opted to play lightweight football his youngster year and loved it(you
can't weigh more than 165 lbs). The beauty of the Academy is that no one is
on an athletic scholarship and so they can try out and play any sporting
team if they can make the roster. My advice to any plebe is to go for
it....if they don't make a varsity team, there are also lots of club sports
and intermurals.

Our son was recruited to play a sport, but because of a post I Day injury and
repeated reinjury during Plebe Summer, the Doctors determined by the middle
of Sept. that he was out of his recruited sport for the entire year.
However, he ended up participating on another team (just during this injury
period) that didn't pose a problem in rehabing the Plebe summer injury. From
his experience and that of several of the offspring of our newly acquired
USNA friends, the Academy seems to be a banquet table of opportunities. Many
of the coaches, varsity and club, carefully watch those Plebes during Plebe
Summer and actively recruit those with noticed abilities to join/try out for
their teams. For many, its hard to choose between options. Some eventually
choose the club route to allow more time for academics. For many I believe
its really the first opportunity for them to make such decisions without
significant parental involvment. Its really exciting to see these young
adults evaluate and then venture out on his/her choosen path (sports,
declared majors, military career options, etc.)! And often those paths come
as a real shock to various members of their family...... Its all part of the
exciting ride for all of us!

Good day all,

Have a question about the Navy Crew. My son (A plebe
2b) has been receiving information from the Crew
coaches and requesting him to commit to their team. My
son seems really interested though he has no
experience. Can anyone point me to some information so
he can make an educated decision? Is this common for
them to recruit like this?

Thanks in advance.

Here are a couple of links to the Navy Crew information. They are PDF
(Portable Document Format) files and you need Adobe Acrobat Reader to
view them. The first link has instructions on how to download and
install Adobe Acrobat. If you already have Adobe Acrobat Reader, I
recommend the second link to view the full size PDF. Beware that they
are huge files and they will take a while to open up in your browser.

Dear Charlie --
Yes it is. My firstie son, Darren, (Light Weight Crew), was recruited as a Plebe with no previous experience. He lettered in Cross Country and Track in high school and had never rowed in his life. He has been a member of the team all three years and accredits participation with the team as one of the most enjoyable aspects of his life on the Yard. The coaches are wonderful.

Sincerely yours,

Thank you Norton Smiley for the site to follow our
44's as they race to Newport! My son told us it was
possible but I had no luck yesterday locating it.
David is on the "Flirt" and really hoping for fair
winds and following seas.
After the Newport race, they will sail to Marion
for the Marion to Bermuda Race. Looking forward to
following them.
Thank you soo much for sharing!

Hi,
A couple of people have e-mailed asking for the web
site to follow the 44's to Newport and Bermuda so I
thought I'd send it on to all.

   http://web.usna.navy.mil/~bruninga/boats.html

I think that I left out one of the slashes in one
of my posts to a parent.
At this point it has not been updated. I just
spoke with my son on the "Flirt" and they were just
passing Ocean Beach. By the way one of the local
newspapers had a picture of the "Flirt" leaving for
Newport with a few mids on board-mine was one of them.
 Thanks to sponsor parents!
Good luck to one and all!
    Happy Father's Day to all!
     GO NAVY!

Hi,

For those parents with mids on VOST who are participating in the
Annapolis to Newport Race....I just received a phone call from my son,
who is on Swift (NA-11). He said that they are 14 miles off the coast
of Ocean City, Maryland and that they have completely lost their wind.
They, along with many other boats, are just "floating"...without a
breath of wind! The crew of Swift was especially disappointed because
they had been first off the start for their wave and had made 14 knots
down the bay! They had also reached the lighthouse in Norfolk
first...as well as setting a new Navy record for that particular part of
the course.

There is even some talk that the race will have to be abandoned because
they have to be at Marion, MA by Thursday in order to participate in the
Marion-Bermuda race. The word is that they will make the call by 2:00
PM tomorrow. Then they will all have to motor up the coast to
Massachusetts in order to make the start of the Bermuda race on
Thursday. Too bad!

I'll keep you posted if I get more news.

My son was asked to come out for crew on the basis at least of his size,
but he found out that the requirement in terms of time would be too great
-- they seem to practice all the time. They do get a great workout,
though, and there are perks to joining a varsity team, so he waited a
while before deciding. They don't make the plebes make snap decisions.

Hi,
Just heard from my son on the "Flirt". They have
made good time and will be landing in Newport tonight.
Although he hasn't seen any of the other boats since
they left, there were about 60, they are quite proud
that they have kept up with the "American Promise".
Their current position 1700 EDT is 41 degrees 3
minutes North/ 71 degrees 46 minutes West. Your guess
is as good as mine if they are at the beginning of the
pack or the back, keep good thoughts!
Spirits are high on the "Flirt" and tummys are
full. They apparently did a lot of pre-cooking before
leaving port and are eating well.
That's my update for now, the net site doesn't
seem to be keeping up with the progress but I keep
checking it anyway.
    Take care,
    GO NAVY, GO FLIRT!!!!
