I looked at the NCAA sports list on the Academy web site, and saw a list of
many sports except boxing. Is this just an intramural activity or is there
intercollegiate competition.

I believe boxing at The Academy is a club sport, albeit a very popular one.
The boxing home page is:

http://www.usna.edu/Club/boxing.html

I did not see a scedule for this year yet. Keep in mind that club sports are
dependent upon busy mids and friends time to work on web pages. When my son
was a firstie, a close friend of his was on the boxing team and had very
little time for web page updates.

Crew Parents & Fans

Another Fall season is coming soon. Just noticed that all 3 teams have
posted their preliminary schedules for the Fall '01 & even for the Spring
'02 season. I've tried to summarize the fall schedule below. Lot's of
overlap between the 3 teams, compared to the spring where they only
competed together at one regatta.

For those '05 parents who will be new to Crew or just new to Navy Crew -
Hope you are able to attend one of the competitions or even more if you
are "local". For those Navy parents who live in the DC, Philadelphia or
Boston area and have no idea what crew is about - Take advantage of one
of the races nearby (hope you don't mind getting up early) and come cheer
on the Navy Teams. Good chance the crew parents can use some extra
support if they are putting on a tailgate to feed the teams afterwards.

FALL 2001 Schedule (as posted on Navy Web Site) Start times are not yet
published.

Sat. 9/22 - Head of Potomac (Washington DC) - Heavyweight, Lightweight &
Women's
NOTE - No teams scheduled for weekend of 9/29
Sat. 10/6 - Head of Ohio (Pittsburgh, PA) - Women's
Sun. 10/7 - Head of Ohio (Pittsburgh, PA) - Lightweight
NOTE - Heavyweights not scheduled for weekend of 10/6
Sat. 10/13 - Navy Day Regatta (Philadelphia, PA) - ALL 3 Teams
Sun. 10/21 - Head of the Charles (Boston, MA) - ALL 3 Teams
Sat. 10/27 - Head of the Schuylkill (Philadelphia, PA) - ALL 3 Teams
Sat. 11/3 - Head of the Occoquan (Occoquan, VA) - Lightweight
Sat. 11/3 - Annapolis Regatta (Spa Creek) - Women's & Lightweight ALSO
NOTE - Heavyweights not scheduled for weekend of 11/3
Sun. 11/11 - Belly of the Carnegie (Princeton, NJ) - Heavyweights &
Lightweights
NOTE - Women's team not scheduled for weekend of 11/11

That will be the end of the fall season. Spring seasons start in mid to
late March depending on which team

What I don't know (my 1st fall season will be this coming one) is which
of these regattas the entire team (ie. Varsity 1, 2 & 3 boats & Novice
[Plebe] 1, 2 & more) will compete at vs. just the top Varsity boat.

Disclaimer - Undoubtedly there is a good chance these schedules will
change - check the website for latest update as the season gets underway.

Sports Fans:
My season's football tickets arrived today. Those of you a bit further
away should be getting yours soon. They are colorful and "personalized." I
assume that means they honored whatever your request was for home game seats
here and at PSI NEt stadium for Air Force.
A Word to the Wise: If you do NOT have season's tickets, and are coming
from afar for one or more games, consider buying tickets on the GOLD side,
ACROSS from the midshipmen. There are always PLENTY of Navy fans who sit
there, as the visiting teams don't bring so many spectators along. Not only
that, but you have a CLEAR VIEW of all the "shenanigans," IE the plebes doing
pushups, the Navy cheerleaders, the goat handlers, etc. If you get tickets
high up on the Navy side, your view of all those activities can be obscured
or partially blocked by other fans in the stands between you and the mids.
You will be looking sideways to try to see them.
Also, NAAA is running a bus to the Air Force game, plus sponsoring
tailgates at that game and at all home games, and there are application forms
for getting tickets for these in your packet. I will assume that the buses
to AF will also be available to those who come into town just for the game.
(Will check that out ASAP and get back to you with the true scoop.) Take my
advice and GO WITH THE BUS!! You will avoid the crowds and lines for parking
fee collection. The bus leaves USNA Alumni Hall early in the morning, to be
on time for the March On's, and leaves the stadium 45 minutes after the game
to return to Annapolis.
I will post more as more information becomes available. In the meantime,
GO NAVY!! BEAT ALL OF 'EM!! Joyce Hoffer

Sorry, Folks!
The Air Force game will be played at FED EX FIELD, outside DC, NOT PSI Net
Stadium. Fed Ex is the Redskins' home field. I'm not the greatest football
field expert, and the yellow info sheet that came with my tickets was
upstairs when I wrote earlier.
I have an "expert" checking into the bus to the game. Will send
definitive information tomorrow, plus the numbers to call. The bus is NOT
provided by NAAA -- I was wrong on that count too. Hold on and be patient.
I promise to get it right in the morning.
    Thanks for understanding. Joyce Hoffer

Hi Navy Family,

Have to second Joyce's suggestion to take the Alumni bus. We did that
Eric's plebe year to get to the stadium for the game against Air Force.
We did not stay for their tailgater, but did enjoy the opportunity to
meet alumni and spouses who were so friendly to us as plebe parents.

Instead of their tailgater, we were bound to join the group of Navy
parents from this list serve, but unfortunately never did hook up with
them. Must be my poor sense of directions.

Excited for all our plebe parents today- even our 2/C son commented on
the day...

Take care,

Hi, Football Fans:
Here is the true scoop from the USNA Alumni Association:

The buses that I am running to FedExField for the Navy/Air Force game are
open to

anyone, as is the Tailgate. We have always opened the buses and Tailgates to

anyone that has an attachment to the Naval Academy, and we welcome parents

and sponsors to join us. The price for the bus is $20.00 per person and the

Tailgate price is $30.00 per person. A registration form is available

on-line at www.usna.com and go to "Events". You can print the form out, fill

it out and mail it in. Please feel free to contact me with any other

questions and I will be happy to help you out. Have a great Navy Day!!!!
                    Kathy.deCamara@USNA.COM

Joyce Here: If you don't have tickets to the game yet, I would hold off
reserving a place on the bus until you are sure you are going. Call the
Athletic Assn. office first thing tomorrow about those tickets. I rather
doubt you can just "pick one up" at the gate when you get here....... This
is a BIG game, and with Andrews Air Force Base just down the road, we are in
competition for seats.

For those of you interested....

I watched the scrimmage on Wednesday. The defense looked real good =
still and have gotten better it seems. The secondary appears to be =
quicker than in the past and the new 4-3 set is stronger at stopping the =
run. We will have to see how they look against Temple.

The offense is getting better and if the receivers can hang on to the =
ball they could generate a lot of yards. Candeto went off the field =
with a heavy wrap on his knee. Don't know his condition but overheard =
it was a strain. =20

Field goals are still a little weak although they hit a couple of 30 =
yarders. They don't appear to have the ability to make any beyond that =
point. I guess the right word is inconsistency.

The punter is a boomer. There was a left footer who nailed a couple =
that went 60-70 yards in the air and that was with a lot of pressure in =
a live action situation.

I think we have a lot to look forward to. The team is very upbeat and =
positive. If the offense can click for a couple of scores, I think the =
defense may keep the scoring low.

As I said, we'll know a lot after the Temple game.

Go Navy!!

Hi All,
Chris just phoned. He didn't have the final score, but said that Navy did
indeed beat Army!
In the Army/Navy match-up, Navy participants were 1st, 2nd and 4th. This was
an open enrollment
meet. There were many participants who were not affiliated with either of
the Academies.

They are now loaded up and headed back toward Annapolis. Good job Navy!!

Hi All,

Hooray for NAVY!!!!

One of our Mid Triathletes came in 3rd place in a very competitive field of
over 650 entrants, sorry I didn't get his name but he completed the 1K Swim,
25K Bike, and 5K Run in 1hr. 10min. As a Navy retiree, a proud father of a
Plebe and an entrant in today's Triathlon (over 50 group), 1hr. 10min. is
darn good, especially since Army didn't even place.

Go NAVY! Beat Army!

Subject: Navy crushes Army in Triathlon

The Navy Triathlon team kicked off the 2001 inter-service rivalry =
against Army with a crushing defeat of the Cadets at the West Point =
Triathlon on Sunday. the sprint Triathlon consisted of a 1000 meter =
swim, a 14.6 mile bike segment and a 3.1 mile run. The Navy men's team =
took eight of the top ten spots in the Academy division. The men were =
led by Midn 1/c Pete Penzell (1st in the Academy division and 3rd =
overall), Midn 2/c Tim O'donnell (2nd in the Academy division and 4th =
overall ), and Midn 2/c Chris Hobert (4th in the academy division and =
19th overall).

Navy women took three of the top five places in the female Academy =
division. Midn 2/c Caitlin Decker paced the women's team with second =
place finish, Midn 3/c Jen Heutel was third and Midn 3/c Melanie =
Cooper's finished in fourth place. This was an impressive performance =
by all three who are first year members of the triathlon team.

The win at West Point marked navy's fourth consecutive victory over Army =
on the Cadet's home turf.

Dear JV Football parents and fans,

I believe the game originally scheduled for today was cancelled. I usually get to the JV games and if I do I'll report back.

Hi Folks! Remember the Great Rivalry Challenge from ESPN and Tostitos we
all participated in last year. Well guess who the teams are in this first
week of the college challenge...Army/Navy or Boston College/Notre Dame. Go
to
http://promotions.go.com/espn/tostitos/frontpage.html and vote for the
Army/Navy game as the best rivalry. I don't know about you but I can't wait
for the college football season to begin!

Does anyone know what time the football games are played? I'm interested in
the Rutgers game. My brother will be visiting the area from the west coast
that weekend and he'd like to see my son for dinner on Saturday night. If
the game is at night, he can schedule his business to see Jarett on Sunday.

Any info will be much appreciated.

Thank you.

Dear Brandi;

The final score of the Navy football game was 26-46 (Temple won).
Navy had some bright spots, including a 38 yd TD pass to Midn 4/C Minter.
But Temple had an 80 yd TD run and also returned a punt for a TD. Coach
Weatherbee said that the Mids got their worst game of the season out of
their system tonight.

Hey Navy football fans,

I see a lot of us are looking for football information.

You can get up to the minute scores and information at
http://www.navysports.com/sports/football/schedule.asp

There is a running score ticker at the top during the game OR you can log on
for live audio! (available most games) The instructions are listed on the
pages.

I did this last night and was able to listen to the radio broadcast of the
game from my Jacksonville, Fl home.

Just a fun thing to do!
