Hi all,
We're anxiously awaiting the arrival of the Navy 44
sailboat "Flirt" on it's way back from Bermuda.
Travel arrangements are up in the air so if any of you
have a more difinitive ETA I would really appreciate
it. I have a feeling David's cel phone is out of
juice or he would have called by now.
Thanks to any who may have a clue.
   GO NAVY!

Hi all,
Thanks Sandy L for your update. I heard from my
son on the "Flirt" a little while ago and thought I
would pass on the info for all. They left Bermuda a
day later than expected and have run the gamut of
weather. Currently there is no wind and they are
motoring in. David was able to spot 2 other vessels
close to the "Flirt" and as we spoke, he spotted land!
Their expected ETA will be tomorrow 7/7/01 in the
afternoon or early evening.
   Welcome home sailors!!!
One of the highlights of their journey was dinner
with Ross Perot, can't wait to hear more.
Fair winds and following seas for a long journey
home!!!
   GO NAVY!

I am trying to get information about Women's Sailing. I have a mid who has
talked to the coach and am a complete novice about this sport. The web site
doesn't really tell how the teams are formulated, classifications, etc. It
mostly gives results. I would really appreciate some education about this
sport.

Forwarded due to technical difficulties...

Hi Terrie,

As a parent of an intercollegiate "dinghy" sailor, I can tell you a little
about that program.
First of all, you can go to "nadn.navy.mil/SailingTeam" and surf around at
both the intercollegiate and offshore team sites.

Basically, the intercollegiate team sails small boats (single-handed,
doublehanded)mostly under 20 feet. It is a very competitive program,
competing every weekend from early Sep-mid Nov, up and down the east coast
versus other college sailing teams, as well as in the spring from March to
May (practice starts around Feb 10 or so. Most skippers are experienced at
sailboat racing at quite a high level, however some are novice, and crews
can be experienced or inexperienced. They welcome newcomers and it is a
great group of mids.

There are coed events as well as "Women's" events. The women's events mean
that both skipper and crew are women. Women can crew for either women or
men, and a lot depends on the combined weight of both skipper and crew
(there are optimum weights for maximum performance of the individual boats
that are sailed). The crew is responsible for the smaller sail in the front
of the boat (jib), hiking out to keep the boat from flipping over, and
basically
helping with everything but steering. The goal is to work in perfect unison
together to execute efficient boat handling, thereby maximizing speed on the
race course. It is a very athletic sport particularly when it is very
windy- both skipper and crew are constantly trimming sails, changing
positions and hanging by their feet over the side of the boat to keep the
boat flat -- not almost tipping over.

It is a very large time commitment since they practice 4 days during the
week from after classes for several hours at least. There are multiple
regattas every weekend, so many members of the team leave at 4 PM on Friday
and don't return until late Sunday evening.

It has been a great experience for our mid. He is an experienced sailor,
but not everyone on the team is. The team has a lot of fun, the kids are
fantastic, and it is a great outlet to be out on the water in a boat after
the rigors of academic classes and the stress of the Academy -- especially
for plebes! The Sailing Center is a casual atmosphere, and the kids can
relax there.

The offshore team competes in Navy 44s (44 foot boats) which require 7 or 8
(I think) in crew to sail them. They also compete on weekends and some
during the summer -- like the Newport to Bermuda race, etc -- probably their
best skippers do this! This is "big boat sailing". It is the same
principle but takes more people to handle the increased size and number of
lines, etc. It also incorporates navigation, etc. I'm not an expert on
this, but you get the idea.

Hope I've helped. Basically, I think any one is welcome to go out for the
teams. Tell your daughter to go for it! Feel free to ask me any questions
I didn't cover.

Hi,

I just wanted to mention to parents who will be going to Philadelphia for
the big game in December that IT IS NOT TOO EARLY to line up your hotel
reservations!! Especially if you want to have any choice at all in where
you stay.

Every downtown hotel and hotels near the stadium will be booked solid before
you know it. It is a HUGE weekend in Philadelphia. Unless you want to be
one of those folks posting an ad in the classifieds who are SCRAMBLING for a
place to stay...ACT NOW!!

I heard the Army-Navy game was not being played in Philadelphia this year
due to a conflict with another event and that other venues were being
evaluated.

Is this not true?

2002 Army-Navy Game Moved to Meadowlands

Game venue changed because of shortage of hotel rooms in Philadelphia.

July 19, 2001

By TOM CANAVAN
AP Sports Writer

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) - The Army-Navy football game in 2002 has
been moved from Veterans Stadium in Philadelphia to Giants Stadium
because of a shortage of hotel rooms.

While the service academies announced the switch on Thursday, Army
athletic director Rick Greenspan also disclosed that Philadelphia has
been given a one-year contract to stage the 2003 game in a new stadium
to be completed that summer.

After 2003, the service academies will be looking for a site or sites
for future games.

Philadelphia was to play host to the next two games, with the 2002
contest last in the city's current contract with the academies, and the
last one to be played at the Vet.

The service academies ran into a problem with the 2002 game about a
month ago when it was discovered that a medical convention had booked
the bulk of the hotel rooms in central Philadelphia on the same weekend
as the game, Dec. 7.

"That put us in a position where we didn't feel there was any way that
they could meet the needs of the academies," Greenspan said in a
telephone interview with The Associated Press. "We usually book 5,000
rooms between the two academies and we felt the city of Philadelphia
just didn't have that capacity."

Jack Lengyel, the athletic director at Navy, said the academies received
calls from sites all over the country offering to stage of the game. But
the academies limited their options to PSINet in Baltimore, the home of
the Super Bowl champion Ravens; Jack Kent Cooke Stadium in Landover,
Md., the home of the Washington Redskins; and Giants Stadium.

"Because of the short notice and so many moving parts in our game, it's
like a major bowl game, with some other nuances that are peculiar to the
military. We just felt more comfortable going to a stadium we had
already played a contest in," Lengyel said.

He added that hotel rooms are readily available in the New York City
metropolitan area.

The New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority, which operates the
Meadowlands sports complex, made a financial guarantee to the academies.
Neither Lengyel nor Greenspan would say how much money was offered.

Sports authority spokesman Dan Emmer could not say how much the
guarantee was because the contract has not been signed.

"We are quite enthusiastic about the Meadowlands for a number of
reasons," Greenspan said. "It's close to our fan base and their
willingness in a short time frame to step up and host this game when we
were put in an awkward position."

It will mark the fourth time the revered sports rivalry will be played
at Giants Stadium. Navy has won two of the three games, 19-17 in 1989
and 39-7 in 1997. Army, which leads the series 48-46-7, posted a 16-14
win in 1993 when Navy missed a short field goal in the final seconds.

Greenspan isn't worried about Navy's success in the stadium.

"No, I think that was a fluke of nature," he said.

The Army-Navy game has been held in nine cities and 14 venues since the
academies first met in 1890. Philadelphia has served as the site of 75
games. New York City has been the host 11 times, followed by East
Rutherford, West Point, N.Y. and Annapolis, Md., all of which have been
the site of the game three times.

Greenspan said the one-year contract with Philadelphia in 2003 gives the
academies the chance to continue their relationship with the city while
allowing them to play in the new stadium, which is scheduled for
completion in August of that year.

"We're interested and anxious to have a game in that city before we went
out and got a longer multiyear deal for '04 and beyond," Greenspan said.
"This will give us experience in Baltimore, in the new stadium in
Philadelphia and the Meadowlands, as well, and other stadiums that
wanted site inspections, like Pittsburgh and Boston."

The Meadowlands Sports complex is in East Rutherford, NJ right outside of
the Lincoln Tunnel in New York city. The nearest airport to fly into is
Newark airport. It is at exit 15 on New Jersey Turnpike. The Meadowlands is
at exit 18W.
The Army- Navy game will be played at the Meadowlands in 2002. This year's
game is in Philly.

The Meadowlands refers to a sports complex in Northern NJ, almost directly across the Hudson River from midtown Manhattan. Nearby towns include Lyndhurst, Secaucus, Moonachie. The best airport to access that area is Newark Airport. (If you can't get a flight into Newark, you can also go via LaGuardia and Kennedy Airports in Queens, NY but they are much further, especially during rush hour when traffic can be horrific.) There are hotels in the area and, of course, lots of hotels in NYC.

Hi,

Being from New Jersey only a few miles away, I'll try to give you the
information you need. The Meadowlands Arena (or Giants Stadium) is located
in East Rutherford, NJ bordering Secaucus, NJ. The best airport to use is
Newark International. You can catch a cab from there (my guess would be ~
$40 - 50 for the cab ride) or rent a car - it's roughly 14 - 16 miles away.
Just hop on the New Jersey Turnpike North at Exit 14 (there's plenty of
signs at the airport but be forewarned - the roads at the airport are
constantly under reconstruction so follow the signs carefully at the
airport. Take the Turnpike to Exit 16 W (Western spur of the turnpike - the
turnpike splits to eastern and western spurs right after you get on). You
can't miss the stadium - it's right in front of you after you get off the
turnpike. After paying the toll at 16W, proceed straight on the exit ramp,
over Route 3. Pass the ramps for Route 3 East, and Route 3 West, and
continue until you enter Sports Complex property. As you enter the Sports
Complex, the first right turn you come to (a horseshoe turn) is Stadium Club
Road. Make this right, and follow Stadium Club Road straight to Continental
Airlines Arena. If you need more info, go to http://www.meadowlands.com/

As far as accommodations, there are hotels right across the stadium in
Secaucus ( I believe one is
a Radisson). They'll probably have shuttles if you don't rent a car. You can
find hotels nearby at http://www.secaucus.org/hotels.html

If you are planning a trip to New York City while you're in the area, I'd
still recommend staying in New Jersey near Secaucus (it's also a lot
cheaper). All you have to do is get on Route 3 East and it's a short trip to
the Holland Tunnel which brings you right into the city.

Go navy!

Well it's going to be fun trying to get a hotel room.
I made several phone calls yesterday - and no one
would take a reservation this early. Of course, I
presume if you belong to one of the priority clubs -
that you can get a reservation early.

Just have to keep trying.

My son , Roger Callahan '03 is just finishing as Detailer for G company.
To the '05 parent who asked for a sprint football schedule, Roger has played
sprint for the last 2 years. As far as getting a new schedule for 2001
from the www.navysports.com page there isn't one posted yet - a lot of
reports on last seasons games though. However, I
called Coach Renforth's office back in May and got a tentative schedule from
there. This is what there is on the sprint football schedule for 2001 that
I was able to find out ( remember it is subject to change).

Sept. 23 Frostburg Home
Oct. 6 Anthracite Bowl vs Army Pottsville(area), PA
? Oct. 13 Newark
Oct. 26 Princeton Home
Nov. 2 Penn
Nov. 9 Army

Newark is a new addition to the schedule and I didn't see Cornell on this
schedule.

Keep looking for it to be posted on the sports page. If you can go to any
of the games (our family drove to all of them last year) be sure one choice
is the Anthracite Bowl- that date won't change and is great public relations
for the academies. Hope to meet you next season.

Question?

Recently received a letter from our plebe saying he'd made the summer sailing team. He'd mentioned earlier that if he made it he'd try to do that in the fall. I'd like some information about this and what it all means. (He never sailed a day in his life before USNA)

I vaguely remember someone writing about sailing, but since it didn't apply to our family I just read and deleted. I've gone back thru my emails and can't locate that one.

Any info would be appreciated.

Denise et al,

I recall the same message, but due to lack of space, I do not retain very
many messages, primarily because of Mike & Sandi's foresight in creating the
archives. I am sure you will discover the message by doing a search for
"sailing" in the archives. It's a great resource I have used many times for
just this purpose.

As always there is help from so many on this net. I now know that Newark =
Airport is the closest airport and all my other questions were answered =
including going to the Meadowlands website for additional info. It is so =
helpful to hear from so many different people since there is abit of =
different information or a different approach from each.

Generous people have offered to check information on specifics....my =
entire family feels much less in the dark! I have most of this stuff in =
a special folder now.

And, yes, we are talking about next year's Army-Navy game. This year we =
are headed for Philadelphia!=20

The sailing program seems really wonderful from what
I've heard from Tim. He just finished his summer
block of sailing in regatta's up the east coast from
Annapolis to Portland, visiting several areas and
competing in several regattas. He was on the Bulldog
- which didn't do all that well - but last year the
team he was on did very well on a 44.

Visit the Sailing Home page to see what it's all
about.
http://www.usna.edu/SailingTeam/

It does take a lot of their time - sailing practice
every day during the fall (into some very cold
weather) and regatta's on weekends. They visit a lot
of places and host events. It's a great experience.
Good luck to Christopher -hope he enjoys it.

In case the URL supplied by Maggie Gentzen (Vanessa '05; O/28) didn't work
on the first try, make sure that you get all of it typed into your address
box in your browser. These very long URL's can wrap in email and not work
the way they should.

The article is entitled "Hurley makes mark at Navy" and begins ...

Although he has just finished his plebe (freshman) year, Leesburg's Bill
Hurley has already marked himself as potentially one of the best golfer's in
the history of the United States Naval Academy.

Here's the URL again for those who are interested...

Subject: Orioles baseball game
Date: Mon, 30 Jul 2001 23:29:10 -0700

When I talked to my son on Sat. he mentioned that the baseball game would
be attended by the port regiment on Tues. nite July 30th and the starboard
regiment would attend on Wed. nite Aug. 1st. The game starts at 7:05 pm ET
and I believe will be on channel 629 on directv. If anyone has any
information about the wrestling or boxing smoker please advise as my family
will be arriving in Annapolis on Aug. 4th for PPW.
