At Binghamton University today, Navy and the Bearcats played to a 1-1
tie. It was a gorgeous fall day here, but the wind was a definite factor
as the leaves continued to fly across the field throughout the game.

Navy struck first midway through the opening half, and seemed to control
play for most of the half with the wind at their backs, but Binghamton
used the wind to their advantage early in the 2nd half to score. Both
teams had plenty of opportunities throughout the 2nd half and in
overtime.

Katherine,
We have just returned from the day at the Head of the Charles. The
lightweight team did very well. The Lightweight four came in 7th, I
believe, and the lightweight 8 was fifth. The four was only beaten by the
Columbia University crew (as far as college crews) and the eight would have
been only behind Yale as far as college crews if they hadn't gotten a 10
second penalty for missing a buoy. We did not get all the details and we
may have missed some information, but that is what we were hearing before
we left. They had terrific weather, warm, sunny. Lots of fun and great
multitudes of people. I don't know how the women or the heavies did. All
in all a great Navy day!

To all Digest members of our USNA-Net Lists...

It's taken quite a bit of work but we now have fully functional Digest
versions of our lists back in operation as of this evening.

As you know, when we made our move to the new server on 9/24, we were not
able to have these operational for those of you who had been receiving our
lists as Digest versions. We can now return to that operation and have
restored our digest subscriptions to those members of USNA-Net who were
signed up for those lists as of 9/24.

You will note that the digest versions are somewhat lengthier than they were
previously. This is due to two reasons. Currently a large number of our
membership are sending messages to the lists in Rich Text which sends the
message with all of its HTML included. We have allowed members to post in
RTF since we will have that remedied very shortly. So please understand that
the lengthy digest messages are only temporary.

The other reason for the extra length is that previously the Digest versions
were sent in an HTML format of their own with messages summarized at the top
by subject. We will get to that also but at this time, you will have to
scroll down and find each message inside the digest. We're sorry about the
problems but we are working very hard to get things back to normal after our
move to the new server.

Lastly, I will be removing each of you from the regular list this evening
and tomorrow. If you get a few duplicate messages as singles and also as
part of the digest version, please understand that will only be for this
evening. By noon tomorrow, all of the regular messages should stop and you
will receive ONLY the digest versions.

We appreciate your patience and thank you for your continued support.

It seems that the lightweight varsity boats, or at least some of them, are
not coming to Philadelphia on Saturday but racing at the Princeton Chase on
Sunday. Hopefully we will be able to duplicate the Navy tailgates, but on a
smaller scale. Any parents planning on attending on Sunday please contact us.
Please contact your son first to find out which regatta they will be
attending. All are welcome though. See you all Saturday and Sunday.

Dear Peg and Harry,
My husband will be going to the Schuykill on Saturday to see our son who
rows for Princeton and to the Princeton Chase on Sunday to see our son who
rows for Navy. Since he will be travelling all weekend, he will bring
cookies to the Chase on Sunday. Hope that this will help somewhat. Let me
know if we can do anything else.

Navy won the match (somewhere in the vicinity of 31-18). Our son said it was actually not as close as the score indicates. All are enjoying the victory (as we speak) at Sean Donlan's (their unofficial clubhouse and watering hole).

Navy fires Weatherbie in midst of winless season

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
----
Associated Press

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Charlie Weatherbie was fired as coach of Navy on Sunday
after leading the Midshipmen to a bowl victory five years ago but winning
just once in the last 18 games.

Defensive coordinator Rick Lantz was appointed interim coach of the winless
Midshipmen.

In six-plus seasons at the Naval Academy, Weatherbie had a record of 30-45.
The team had lost 17 of its last 18 games and is 0-7 this season after
Saturday's 21-20 loss at Toledo.

"This season, unsuccessful to date, has led us to the conclusion that the
Midshipmen clearly need a new perspective and consequently new leadership,"
athletic director Chet Gladchuk said.

Weatherbie's career at Navy was highlighted in 1996, when the team went 9-3
and won the Aloha Bowl. In 1997, the team went 7-4, but has won just nine of
41 games since.

Weatherbie said he and his family "thoroughly enjoyed" his time at Navy.

"While we weren't able to achieve more success during the past two years in
terms of our won-loss record, I am extremely proud of our players' and
staff's efforts on and off the field," he said.

Lantz returned to Navy this year after serving as defensive coordinator at
Virginia the past 10 seasons. He will be a head coach on the college level
for the first time.

WEATHERBIE RELIEVED OF HIS DUTIES
Lantz Named Interim Head Coach

ANNAPOLIS, Md.-The United States Naval Academy announced Sunday that =
head football coach Charlie Weatherbie has been relieved of his duties =
effective
immediately and defensive coordinator Rick Lantz has been named the =
interim
head coach.

In six-plus seasons at the Naval Academy, Weatherbie compiled a record =
of 30-45 (.400), including losses in 17 of the last 18 games. Since =
compiling back-to-back winning seasons in 1996 (9-3, Aloha Bowl =
Champions) and 1997 (7-4), the Mids have won just nine of the last 41 =
contests (.220), including a 3-15 mark (.167) at Navy-Marine Corps =
Memorial Stadium. Weatherbie posted a 3-3 (.500) mark against Army and =
a 1-6 (.143) record against Air Force. "I have the utmost respect for =
Charlie Weatherbie as a man, and I'm particularly grateful for all of =
the hard work and effort he has put into his players and this =
institution," said Vice Admiral John Ryan, USN, Superintendent of the =
Naval Academy. "We wish Charlie and his family the very best in the =
future."

"Coach Weatherbie's contributions to the Academy, both on and off the =
field, have been numerous and we appreciate his efforts over the past =
seven years," said Director of Athletics Chet Gladchuk. "However, the =
head football coach at the United States Naval Academy assumes a very =
important responsibility. He is asked to annually field a highly =
competitive and successful program that reflects standards of =
achievement consistent with our institutional mission. This season, =
unsuccessful to date, has led us to the conclusion that the midshipmen =
clearly need a new perspective and consequently new leadership. Change =
at season's end was inevitable, but acting today provides the =
administration with critical additional lead-time to invite and recruit =
interest from the coaching community for this important position. =
Defensive coordinator Rick Lantz, an experienced Division I veteran, =
will assume interim head coaching responsibilities for the remainder of =
the season."

"My family and I have thoroughly enjoyed our time at the Naval Academy =
and our close association with the members of the Naval Academy Athletic =
Association, the Naval Academy Administration and, in particular, the =
young midshipmen involved in our football program," said Weatherbie. =
"While we weren't able to achieve more success during the past two years =
in terms of our won-loss record, I am extremely proud of our players and =
staff's efforts on and off the field. It was a privilege to have been =
associated with young men who will be the future leaders in our Navy and =
Marine Corp. I wish them all the best in their careers."

Lantz, who returned to Navy this year as the defensive coordinator after =
serving as the defensive coordinator the last 15 years at Louisville and =
Virginia, will have the opportunity to be a head coach on the collegiate =
level for the first time. "We are going to give it everything we have to =
win these last three football games," said Lantz. "I want these seniors =
to go out on a winning note."

Lantz came to Navy from Virginia, where he had been the defensive =
coordinator for Naval Academy graduate George Welsh for the past 10 =
seasons. At Virginia, Lantz oversaw the Cavaliers' change from a 5-2 =
defensive alignment to a more aggressive 4-3 scheme. Since the change, =
Virginia has consistently boasted one of the best defenses in the =
Atlantic Coast Conference and the nation.

Lantz also coached the linebackers at Virginia for seven seasons and =
helped develop some of the greatest linebackers in school history, =
including current NFL standouts James Farrior and Jamie Sharper.

Lantz came to Virginia from Louisville, where he spent five seasons as =
defensive coordinator and linebacker's coach. During his final season at =
Louisville in 1990, the Cardinals finished with a 10-1-1 record and =
defeated Alabama, 34-7, in the Fiesta Bowl.

As a 35-year veteran of collegiate football, he spent six years at the
Naval Academy, and was an assistant coach with the New England Patriots =
of
the National Football League in 1981. Before joining the Louisville =
football
coaching staff in 1986, he served as defensive line coach for two =
seasons at
Notre Dame and defensive coordinator for two seasons at Georgia Tech. =
His
other assistant coaching stops include Miami (Fla.) (1977-80), Navy
(1971-76), Buffalo (1968-70) and Boston University (1965-67). While at =
Navy,
Lantz was a defensive assistant for Rick Forzano (1971-72) and George =
Welsh
(1973-76).

Lantz also served four years in the U.S. Marine Corps and was the head =
football coach at Bridgton Academy in Bridgton, Maine, in 1964.=20

Hello,
Did anyone attend the Lightweight Crew Teams meet at Princeton? I would love
to hear about it. The crew teams have an intersquad meet next Saturday in
Annapolis. I know they would love to see a bunch of Navy people watching.

It's tough playing D-1 with a team that is recruited from athletes that must
meet higher standards than other D-1 schools. Most athletes playing D-1
football couldn't make it in the gates at any of the Academies.

I really think that it's more of the fact that the kids that have the SIZE
and SPEED to play elsewhere don't want to commit to the rigors at USNA and
the 5 year commitment after that. Plus, most athletes heavily recruited for
football have their eyes on possible PRO money (as unlikely as that is),
which they know is a VERY remote possibility at Navy. We know of several
OUTSTANDING kids recruited by Navy, that would have done well, who have not
gone to USNA for these reasons. I see the renewal of patriotism in our
country and the renewed focus on war as possibly helping the recruiting
situation for football, as trivial as that sounds.

Disagree strongly -- USNA can compete. Look at Stanford and Air Force. =
Lots of excellent college-level athletes with high academic standards.

USNA-Sports Hi All,
There is no way any school can compete without the horses on the ol or dl.
The Navy has no three hundred pounders on the line let alone maybe 250. I
don't care how fast you are in the fourth quarter bluk will kick your butt.
Especially if you have that size with depth.

Wolf Patton
Tacoma, Wa.
