Hey Navy Sports Fans

Navy Men won the Army-Navy Indoor Track Meet Saturday at
the Naval Academy. It was a close meet with some
controversy.

The Navy Women beat Army again. I think the result was
93-88.

Go Navy!

We're interested in hearing all the tips out there for following the baseball

Dear Chris,

Your young wrestlers are in for a treat. This meet usually goes down to the
wire.
When we lived in Massachsetts, we took our two younger sons to Annapolis in
1994, our older son's plebe year to watch an Army/Navy wrestling match. It
was incredible. Our oldest son did not wrestle, but Chris and Dan both
wrestled(Chris was New England wrestling Champ his senior year at 215lb, he
was 40-1, he went on to wrestle at Williams College(MASSASCHSETTS) and was
their Heavy weight wrestler and starting noseguard on their footbal team)
Any way back to the wrestling match, Chris was just a sophomore in HS and
Dan in 7th grade, The match was tied when they got to the heavyweight
match. The two wrestlers were both firsties and had alternated winning over
the past 3 years. The match went into overtime and the Navy wrestler won,
winning the meet. Well, during the match, a midshipman who was sitting up
front close to the action had been taunting the army wrestler. As soon as
the match was over, the Army heavyweight vaulted over the railing and CHASED
the mid that had been taunting him up the steps at Alumni Hall, took him to
the floor and had his fist poised and ready to let the mid have it(we were
all thinking the mid deserved it) and he stopped, stood up and walked away.
What excitement...first to see a great meet, to see a HEAVYWEIGHT wrestler
vault over a 7 ft railing, an unbelievable athlete and then the almost
fight. HE was reprimanded, the Superintendant at Army apologized for the
incident, the mid , according to our Tom was also reprimanded for being such
a little jerk during the match and our sons never forgot the whole incident.
Dan was a very good high school wrestler, but he never felt that he could
compete at Navy that has such an outstanding program, but he sure enjoys
watching the matches. Good luck with your wrestling team and have a GREAT
time. You may inspire some future mids.

Just purchased tickets to the games on the 23rd. I was delighted they were
available, since my daughter said the brigade is going. Wondered if anyone
knows any protocol after this game - do they have any free time to go out with
family? Is there any hotel near there that the whole brigade stays in? The
tickets are for the men's and women's games!

Navy Wrestling Looks For Fourth All-Academy Team Championship
Saturday

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy wrestling team will travel to
Charleston, S.C.,
Saturday to compete in the seventh-annual All-Academy Tournament
hosted by
The Citadel. The tournament will begin at 10 a.m., and the
finals are slated
for 5 p.m.
"I am looking forward to seeing our team compete in a
tournament setting,
and it is important for them to get more matches in one day,"
Navy head coach
Bruce Burnett said. "We are getting closer to the conference
tournament, so
this is an important step and part of our training cycle. We
will see how the
guys respond to the technical situations we have been working
on."
Navy (7-6) is coming off a tough weekend on the road,
dropping a 25-10
decision to 11th-ranked Lehigh and a 20-15 decision to Drexel in
Lansdale,
Pa. The Mids scored a lopsided 33-12 win over Sacred Heart,
despite having to
forfeit the 133-pound weight class due to an injury to Mike
Simon (Jr./North
Canton, Ohio).
Team captain Mark Conley (Exton, Pa.) wrestled in the
National Wrestling
Coaches Association (NWCA) All-Star Classic Monday in Hempstead,
N.Y. Then
ranked third nationally in the 141-pound weight class, Conley
defeated then
second-ranked Sean Gray from Virginia Tech, 4-1, to earn his
ninth-straight
victory and improve to 29-2 overall. With the victory over Gray,
Conley moved
up to No. 2 overall behind top-ranked Eric Larkin from Arizona
State in the
latest rankings released by InterMat.
The Mids are seeking their fourth team championship at the
All-Academy
Tournament, and their first title since 1999. Navy also captured
overall
championships in 1997 and 1995. Last season, Navy finished third
with 87
points behind Air Force (103.5) and Army (88). Air Force has won
the last two
championships and three of the last four titles.
Mike Bigrigg (Sr./Santa Ana, Calif.) and Conley each
captured individual
titles last year in the 197-pound and 141-pound weight classes
respectively.
Conley also won the 141-pound division in 2000 and was the
runner-up at 149
pounds as a freshman. Heavyweight Steve Kovach (Jr./Parkesburg,
Pa.) lost in
sudden-death of the championship last year and teammate Jim
Letchford
(Jr./Marlton, N.J.) was edged by a point in the finals of the
174-pound
weight class.

Some of you may not know about this - a service provided by the Academy -
that forwards Navy Sports releases to the email addresses of those who
belong to the service. This is not a listserver, where you can post
questions or comments. But, if you can't get enough of Navy Sports - this
would be exactly what you are looking for.

Both Mike and I belong, we each receive the news articles on our own
computers, in the same room. That way, we don't have to forward them to
each other - or even have to walk the 8 feet that separates our computers.
I know, I know, we could both use the exercise - but ... :>)

To receive mailings from the Navy Sports Information Service you simply have
to address an email to:

subscribe-navysports-mids@maillist.usna.edu

and put "Subscribe" in the Subject line. I don't even think that you
actually have to put anything in the Subject line - but it won't hurt.

You will receive anywhere from one to a dozen releases on various sports
each and every day. Some you will be very interested in, and others you
will simply delete. But, it is an excellent way to get sports news!

Duke Splits Doubleheader With Navy to Open 2002 Season
Jeff Alleva Picks Up First Win of Season as Blue Devils Top Navy, 6-4

Feb. 9, 2002

Box Score

The Duke baseball team opened its 2002 season on Saturday afternoon, earning a
doubleheader split with Navy at Jack Coombs Field. The Blue Devils (1-1) took
the first game, 6-4, while the visiting Midshipmen (1-1) won the second, 8-4.

In the first game Navy jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the
first after Neil Brubeck doubled in Matt Lukevics. Duke responded in the
bottom of the second as Troy Caradonna scored on first baseman Brubeck's error
and Tim Layden scored on a fielder's choice to give the Blue Devils a 2-1
lead. John Cocca doubled in David Woolsey in the top of the fifth to tie the
game at 2, but Duke would take the lead for good with three runs in the bottom
of the inning. Caradonna singled with the bases loaded, driving in Kevin Kelly
and Bryan Smith. Layden followed with a sacrifice fly to give Duke a 5-2 lead.

Jeff Alleva (1-0) earned his first win of the season for the Blue Devils after
he scattered seven hits over seven innings while giving up four runs and
striking out seven. Paul DeMarco (1) picked up the save as he held Navy
scoreless for two innings. Matt Cooney (0-1) was charged with the loss for
Navy.

In Game Two, Navy once again got on the board first on a two-run homer by Dean
Farmer. Duke answered with one run in the bottom of the first and second
innings to tie the game at 2. The Midshipmen added runs in the top of the
fifth and seventh on a ground out by Cocca and a solo home run by Dominic
Nicolini to take a 4-2 lead. The Blue Devils tied it again after Smith scored
on a wild pitch and Layden roped a single to score Larry Broadway. Navy,
however, scored four unanswered runs in the top of the ninth to seal the
victory.

Andy Froistad (1-0) pitched 1.2 scoreless innings to pick up the win in
relief, while Brian Patrick (0-1) took the loss for the Blue Devils.

Duke and Navy finish off their three-game series Sunday afternoon at Jack
Coombs Field at 1:30 p.m.

Navy's Mark Conley Defeats Second-Ranked Sean Gray at NWCA
All-Star Wrestling
Match

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - Navy wrestling team captain Mark Conley
(Sr./Exton, Pa.),
ranked third nationally in the 141-pound weight class, scored a
4-1 decision
over second-ranked Sean Gray from Virginia Tech Monday night at
the
36th-Annual National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA)
All-Star Classic at
Hofstra Arena.
"Mark did a great job representing himself, the Navy
wrestling program,
the Naval Academy and the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling
Association
(EIWA)," Navy head coach Bruce Burnett said. "He controlled the
pace of the
match and kept the pressure on the whole time. We just have to
keep building
from here."
Conley picked up his ninth-straight victory and improved to
29-2 overall,
while handing Gray just his third loss of the season. The annual
event
attempts to put the top-two wrestlers in each weight class
together to
compete in a dual match.
The two wrestlers battled to a scoreless first period before
Conley got
on the board to start the second stanza with an escape. With
time winding
down in the second period, Conley took down Gray at the edge of
the mat to
build a 3-0 lead going into the final period. Gray began the
third period in
the down position, but he was unable to escape until late in the
stanza as
Conley captured a 4-1 victory with riding time.
Top-ranked Eric Larkin from Arizona State was originally
slated to
wrestle Gray but withdrew last week due to an injury. Last
season at the NWCA
All-Star Classic, Gray, ranked third in the country, fell to
top-ranked Doug
Schwab from Iowa in the 141-pound division.

Dear Navy Family,
Just wanted to share with you that our Navy Women's Rugby team won
the Mardi Gras tournament in New Orleans this past weekend. There were
12 big name schools (NC State, Texas Tech, FSU, UNC-Charlotte, etc.) in
attendance.  Take a look at the scores!!!  Navy/Rice: 75-0;
Navy/Arkansas State: 105-0; Semi-final, Navy/NC State:78-0; Final,
Navy/Texas A&M: 61-0. The Navy women allowed no team to score against
them. While our club teams do not get the publicity, they practice hard
and play hard, and obviously play with the Navy spirit. Check out their
team website(managed by a team member): www.usna.edu/WomensRugby. Catch
a game if you are visiting the Academy during March and April. It is
something to see!

Go Ruggers!

Hi Kim and any other Crew parents,
When Meghan went with the Crew team for Spring Break, they came down here to
Miami Beach. They trained at the University of Miami's facility. We went down
there to watch them, and got to spend some time with her. We went to lunch
and walked around the area where they stayed. It was north of the
Fountainbleu and there are alot of hotels there, on that strip of beach,
maybe 48th to 60th St. I think the area is Bal Harbour but I am not sure of
that, it may be the area just south of Bal Harbour. You could ask your mid if
this is where they are going. Then check the schedule for Spring Break, I
believe it is the second week in March. A lot of the hotels in that area are
being renovated and taken over by big corporations, Hyatt, Hilton so I can't
give you the name of any hotels/ but find out where the kids will be. I am
sure that they have reservations already and work from there both north and
south because there are many. Good luck......Go Navy.......Beat Army

Last year the men's lightweight crew went to Oak Ridge, Tennessee for their
practice during spring break. I believe they were allowed leave Thursday
and Friday of that week. As far as I know, men's lightweight is going to
Tennessee again this year.

Today's paper is FULL of reports of USNA sports teams and their prowess this
weekend. A synopsis follows:

Navy Women's Basketball over Lafayette 50-45

Navy Hockey over Drexel in the semifinals of the Eastern Collegiate Hockey
Assn. playoffs. 3-2
Navy will vie for the ECHA championship today at 4 PM.

Navy Squash over Air Force 7-0
Navy Squash over North Carolina 9-0
Navy Squash over Wesleyan 8-1

Navy Rifle Team over Army*** 7692-7625
    ***9th straight N-Star

Navy Boxing. Brigade Boxing semifinals were on Friday night, with finals
coming up at
8 PM NEXT Friday.

Navy Men's Track is "positioned for a title run" at the Patriot League Indoor
Track & Field Championships at Army -- pretty sure it's THIS weekend.

The losses were:

Navy Men's Basketball Lafayette over Navy 80-72

Navy Women's Track and Field is not doing well at that Track & Field tourney
at Army, with no points so far through three scoring events. GOOD LUCK TODAY
to our female mids!

Do you need tickets for the Brigade Boxing Finals this Friday? My son has
made it to the Finals and I would love to go. If so, where do you call to
get them? I don't know anything about Boxing but he sounds so exicted about
this I don't want to miss it!

I've found two conflicting schedules for Men's Lightweight Crew: one on the
Ltwt Crew's web page, http://webster.nadn.navy.mil/LtWtCrew/homepage.htm and
one on NavySports at http://www.navysports.com/sports/mlcrew/schedule.asp

Does anyone know which one, if either, is correct? And which team would be
going to San Diego for the Secretary of the Navy Cup? We'd like to plan a
spring trip to Annapolis and catch our Mid in one of the races, and it's a
long way from California to find out we had the wrong dates!

One more result that wasn't mentioned, the Navy Pistol team won the
collegiate sectional match this past weekend.

They also broke (shattered!!!) the National Air Pistol score (set in 1991
by Oregon) by 25 points! Congrats to all Pistol team members- they take on
Army next at West Point. Looking for another National Championship in
March!!!

Also, Navy Women's Swimming/Diving won the Patriot League championship, which ran Thurs 02/14 - Sat. 02/26. Quite a see-saw battle with Bucknell which came down to the last event. Navy won 4 out of 5 relay events but only 5 individual events (won by only two individuals, Melissa Hawley (3) and Tori Throckmorton (1)). We won the championships because of team depth, strength and character....just like a Navy team should.

Ok, I admit it, the meet didn't last that long (just the 3 days, not 12) and 1 + 3 = 4 and not 5...

I drove all night to get back home from Annapolis last night, and here I am at work, producing flawlessly.

Hi Sports Fans,
I have noticed no one has mentioned the army/navy wrestling match. It was
wrestled on the 22 of February. I was there and it was a great match. No one
was pinned and Navy beat Army 22 to 9. Actually I was there for the whole
week. Leaving Saturday the 16 and returning on the 22. Those parents who
mids wrestled they did a fine job.
