Is JV football (I believe they have
three games) for the Plebes on the
the D-I team that aren't playing regularly
on Saturday or is it for all varsity
players that aren't playing on Saturday?

There has been a lot of talk about the renovations for the USNA Navy/Marine

For the past few years football has usually worked like this. All are
considered to be on the Varsity team. Whether or not you dress for the
Saturday game, play in the Saturday game and whether or not you travel
with the team for away games depends on where you are positioned on the
depth roster. When the appropriate time comes they will be allowed to
eat at the team tables, which are located in King Hall and have the
same food as the other tables, but more of it. They usually do not have
to deal with being rated during their meals at the team tables like they
are at their company tables.

The Plebes that are picked to attend Varsity 2-a-days still live within
their company area, not with the football team. This is what happens
during the school year. The Plebes that do not go to Varsity 2-a-days
are still on the team, but will not continue to practice until after
reform. They will then be joined by their upper classmen team mates
who did not participate in 2-a-days either. If your Plebe takes part in
the Varsity 2-a-days, in past years these have taken place during PPW.
They will have to take part in the mandatory parades and re-swearing in,
but also have to attend football practice. This is D-1 football.

All Plebes are on the JV team and suit up fore the JV games whether they
dress for the Varsity game or not. Most of the Youngsters who do not
dress for the Saturday game, or are not regular players on the Varsity
team, also suit up for the JV games.

Remember, this is the way it was done with Coach Weatherbie. Coach
Johnson is the new head coach. He has a whole new coaching staff, and
things might change this year. I had a chance to meet the Coach, and
his staff, when he met with the NAPS players and their families before
the NAPSTERS reported. Coach Johnson coached Georgia Southern to 2
national championships. Many of his current assistants were there with
him These gentlemen are about winning football games and making the
athletes playing for them leaders not only on the field, but in the
Brigade.

Any idea how/ when we can find out the JV football schedule? When we met
with the team before I-Day, the coach alluded to 7 JV games (?-did I
hear right? there were only 3 last year) but not sure how to find out
when and where.
thank you.

I was mailed a list of Plebe football players that made the football team and
my son's name was not on it, He told me when he called Saturday that he made
the team, can anyone shed any light on what this particular list is?

Hey Navy Family,
I was wondering if anyone has ever driven their

If your son said he made the Plebe football team, assume that he did until he
tells you something different. The last thing he would want to hear is that
you saw a list on the Parents Net and his name wasn't on it. My son would
get very annoyed (still does) if I found out something they were doing on the
parents net and mentioned it him - even something as mundane as what they did
on the Fourth of July. You can imagine how you would have felt at college if
your parents were all communicating daily and "lurking" and reporting
personal things about you to 1,000 strangers. It just doesn't happen at
regular colleges. It is great for us to keep informed and get support, but
don't forget your parents clubs, because that's where you can get a real
feeling for the wonderful "family" that we are. Don't let the info you get
here keep you from attending Parent's Club get togethers. I don't recommend
asking about or telling anything to your Mid that might give them the idea
that we know things before they do, or before they can tell us - Even if you
do get advanced information, keep that information in your head and heart but
let them do the talking. (be stealth parents!) Those of you with 03's or
04's know what I'm talking about!

Most Mids and for certain, ALL Plebes ride the bus to and from the A/N game,
even when it is held in Philadelphia or Baltimore. In the past when the
game was in either Phillie or Baltimore, the Plebes were allowed to spend
the evening following the game roaming about the city but had report back to
a local pick up point by a certain hour to catch the next bus leaving for
the Yard.

It may be different for this group since the Meadowlands and Giant Stadium
are so far removed from NYC. It certainly isn't walking distance as it is
in Phillie or Baltimore. Upper-class Mids may be able to submit chits
requesting longer or different Liberty but I honestly feel that it will be
too early in the AC year for such chits for Plebes. They will not yet rate
special treatment.

And then, a lot depends upon the outcome of the game. If Navy wins,
everything is much different than if they loose including the mental state
of your Plebe.

For instance, many wagers will be won or lost that weekend. Plebes are
bound upon the honor of the Class of '06 to accept any wager offered to them
by an upper-class Midshipman about the outcome of the A/N Game. This is
NEVER about money. The penalty for loosing such a wager may be to shave
your head or to show up for noon formation in your little sister's
cheerleading outfit. You get the idea.

The week preceding A/N is filled with extra activities aimed at heightening
the experience. It is essentially a week of pep rallies and anticipatory
fun.

If you have never been to an A/N game, make sure you catch at least one
during the four years your Mid is at the Yard. You won't be sorry.

The drive from New Jersey (Giants Stadium) will be no longer than 4 hours
unless you hit terrible traffic.

I'm new to this list & I'm sure this question has been asked & answered many
times, but when do you know if you will receive the tickets that you
requested for the Army/Navy football game? I responded by FAX on 06-17-02 to
the mail inquiry from the Naval Academy Athletic Association that I wanted 4
tickets for my family. So far, I have heard nothing.

Hello Navy Sports fans! Our plebe son disclosed yesterday in our phone call
that he is doing (lightweight) crew; and as ignorant parents (Dad orig from
Nebraska, Mom from North Dakota)-this is not a sport we know much
about...assume USNA will cut some of these plebes-I understand the season is
after the new year? How many on plebe team? Any enlightenment would be
appreciated. Thanks,

Mark and Ivy, et al.,
FYI -- I had the same questions four short years ago when my son was invited
onto the Plebe lightweight crew team. He loved it and remained an avid rower
all four years! In high school he lettered in cross country and had never
rowed before attending the academy. The lightweight coach is wonderful -- we
could not say enough positive about him! Darren said his involvement on the
team was one of the highlights of his time there.
Your son has made a great choice!
GO NAVY!

My '04 son also selected crew during plebe year, and has stayed with it
since! They start workouts at the start of the Academic year and do have
races against other eastern schools in the fall, but my son says they don't
really count other than as good practice. The real season begins in the
spring. The team has a web site you might want to see -
http://webster.nadn.navy.mil/LtWtCrew/homepage.htm - with lots of photos and
team stats. There's also a Crew section in http://www.navysports.com
Another national website for crew racing is www.row2k.com .

We had no knowledge about crew, and neither did our son, before he joined
the team. I have yet to see an actual race, although we did get to go out
with one of the coaches and watch practice races on the Severn River this
Spring when we visited the Academy. It is awesome to see the power of those
rowers and the speed of those long, skinny shells.

Your son will soon discover that crew practice starts at "O-dark-30" as the
saying goes, and it gets very cold out on the river as fall and winter
commences. Polypro thermals are very popular! It is a very strenuous
sport, and the rowers soon find themselves in a sweat no matter what the
outside temperature may be. My son is a coxswain, or as he puts in "weight
in the boat," and doesn't get to exert himself physically during sessions,
so he puts on layers of polypro and waterproof clothing as the temperature
drops.

Good luck to all in this fantastic voyage...

Alexandra,

It is my understanding that there will be a three-day football tryout camp
for plebes this weekend, Thursday-Saturday. They will stay in the varsity
dorm at Ricketts for two nights. At the end of this camp, approximately
9-10 plebes will be invited to the varsity football camp, as I understand
things. So, this weekend is the earliest that that will happen. I pray
that Marco does well!! I heard from one of the track coaches at the plebe
all-comers track meet tonight that they're expecting a much more wide-open
offense than they have had in the past out of Coach johnson's triple option.

Good morning,
Our son has written about trying out for the Sprint team. Does this
work differently from the varsity team or is it the same?
