Coach Johnson's press conference after practice today has just been posted
at:

http://www.navysports.com/sports/football/release.asp?RELEASE_ID=7557

He names the eight freshmen who are being invited to practice with the
varsity:

Q. When will you make the decision what 10 plebes will come back and
practice with the varsity for two-a-days?

A. We are only going to bring back eight. Lamar Owens (QB/Savannah, Ga.),
Jason Monts (QB/Midlothian, Va.), Evan Beard (FB/ Boardman, Ohio), Marco
Nelson (SB/Northridge, Calif.), Sam Mathews (SB/Pittsburgh, Pa.), Jeremy
Chase (LB/Norfolk, Va.), Josh Martin (LB/Sylmar, Calif.) and T.J. Irwin
(DB/Culver City, Calif.).

Mine didn't make it, and I'm tremendously glad for and proud of those who
did!

My son MIDN Kenneth Hannah boxed in the first plebe smoker, her boxed in the
147 lbs bout, can any boxing parents who may have been there be able to tell
me if they saw him box, and if so how he did?

Martha and others,

The Army-Navy game is being played at the Meadowlands (a.k.a. Giant's
stadium) in Rutherford, NJ. It is closest to Newark International Airport.

Enjoy!

First Naval Academy Victory over Army since the Brigade has Reformed!

I just received a call from our son that The Navy Triathlon team was the
overall winner of the West Point Triathlon this morning in New York. The
top finishers were Tim O'Donnell in first, Brandon Secrest in 3rd and
followed very closely by Chris Hobert. More details will be available as
soon as their 5 hour road trip back to the yard is completed.

This Naval Academy victory is particularly sweet because Army, not only
hosted the home town triathlon, open to participants across the country,
they had to watch so many Navy jerseys leading the race through out the day.

Congratulations to Navy for their victory and we hope the Triathlon Team can
win the National Collegiate Championship again this year!

Hello, all-

I know its early, but I have some questions for those of you who know the
area. Is it feasible to fly into and out of BWI and drive up for the game?
If staying in the area, is there a way to get from the Newark
Airport/Meadowlands area into Manhattan to see the sights without paying a
fortune for a cab? Or would it be better to stay in NYC and get to the
Meadowlands for the game only?

Any and all opinions will be welcomed. Private email with specific hotels,
etc. would be great, but I'm sure the list would like the generic feedback.

Thanks,

The results for Saturday's West Point Triathlon has been posted.

If you go to WWW.LMSPORTS.COM and follow the links to West Point Triathlon
and then results for the August 18, 2002, race, you can pull up the entire
results, including all the split times for each event. All of the Midshipmen
that are in the actual Navy vs. Army Competition are noted by a C before
their names as well as Annapolis as their hometown.

Good Luck!

Does anyone know whether the plebes would be allowed to wash an item of
clothing out in their sink and hang it in the shower to dry? Is this
allowed? My son plays baseball and said that he needs at least two more
pairs of sliding pads, because they are getting dirty practicing every day
and he can't send them out to wash, because he only has one pair and needs
to wear them every day. I figured if I got another pair, he could wash one
and use the other. Does anyone have any suggestions. This certain pads are
not cheap, so I don't know whether I should buy two more pairs, besides that
we need a new wooden bat already since someone broke his and baseball season
is months away!!! Oh well!

thanks

Hi from VT
I have a plebe playing JV football and is training with the varsity team. I
heard we would get tickets for games. How does this happen? Do we call and
order them or are they sent. Also, if we go to see a game and he is not
playing can we sit with him. Just what is the protocol? No communications
from him either. TOO busy. I guess this is good.

Hi Sally and other plebe parents interested in attending football games,

As a general rule, parents and other guests of plebes do not
sit with their mids at the games. The entire brigade marches over from the
yard in a formation, and enters the stadium in ranks and forms up on the
field. after the brigade leaves the field, all midshipmen except firsties
sit together with plebes standing in the first rows in order to pour onto
the field and do push-ups whenever Navy scores. Incidentally, the plebes do
one pushup for Navy's total score each time the team scores, i.e. 6
push-ups when Navy scores a touchdown, then seven when they make the point
after, and so on. Hoprfully under Coach Johnson they'll be be doing lots of
push-ups. In addition, many plebes will try to steal the other teams flags
or banners and return with them to the Navy side during the game.
Opportunities for visiting with your mid is usually limited to halftime in
the corridor behind Navy and at a tailgate after the game.

Sandi,

I looked up the web site for Giants Stadium (www.giantsstadium.com) yes, 2
s's, and confirmed there is no Path train to or from the stadium. The
nearest station is in Harrison, NJ about 10 miles south. There is no public
transport to the stadium from Harrison. The web site lists many of the
nearby hotel/motels and transportation from the New York Port Authority Bus
Terminal in NYC to the stadium. Any one looking for rooms should avoid
Newark (Mayor James won't like this). Rooms can also be found to the west of
the stadium in Lyndhurst, Clifton, Wayne, Little Falls, Totowa, Fairfield,
to name a few towns. To the north is Hackenhack, Ridgewood, Teaneck and Fort
Lee near the George Washington Bridge.

On a map of NJ follow along State Route 3, or 46 also along State 17, 4, and
Interstate 80 there are many accomodations on these roads. All the above
towns are approximately 30 to 45 minute (maximum, some are closer) drive
from the complex by car. Traffic is a big factor in NJ as there is NO direct
Public Transportation without going into NYC FIRST and then taking the bus
back to the Meadowlands. There is more than enough parking at the Giant's
Stadium. The AAA has a tour book of NJ/PA that lists many of the
accomodations in the area.

Sandi, please feel free to ammend the above as you see fit. I know it is
alot of information. I sent this as I grew up in NJ and know how difficult
it is to get around. I also know what it is like driving into a strange
metropolitan area and not know exactly where I should be. I hope this will
be helpful in the parent's plans to get to the Army/Navy Game.

I know nothing about the Meadowlands area, but we booked a hotel room in
Secaucus, and they told us they would be providing a bus to the Army-Navy
game for $5 per person. And that it would be a very short ride. This seemed
like an easy fix rather than renting a car. We were also told there was
reliable and easily accessible public transportation into NY city from our
hotel site.

<<< If the home football games start at noon, when do the mids march to the
stadium? Is the parking lot of the stadium the best place to observe this?
>>>

Believe it or not, we have a map of the stadium in our Parents Handbook
which shows the Parade Route for the Midshipmen as they march from the
Academy to the Stadium . You can find it under Stadium in the Site Index on
our web site at www.USNA-Net.org or directly at...

http://www.usna-net.org/handbook/stadium.html

Midshipmen march to the Stadium in Company Formation beginning after about
1100 via the route indicated on the map (linked above). They will enter the
Stadium via the Taylor Avenue Entrance at street level. The best place to
see this is from the area immediately around the driveway entrance on Taylor
Avenue. If your Mid is in one of the first few Companies, there may be time
to see his Company arrive at the Taylor Avenue entrance and then hot foot it
up to your seats to watch them march on and take their seats as a group.
(Lines queuing up for security will probably be too long to allow this to
happen.) If you will be going to only ONE Home Game, we advise that you be
in your seat to see the March ON rather than somewhere outside waiting to
see the March OVER.

All of the Mids will arrive at the stadium and congregate in the fenced-in
area between Taylor Avenue and the South End of the Stadium BEFORE they
march into the stadium. The "March On" is best seen from your seats INSIDE
the stadium. All Mids will march onto the field with their Company and form
up for the singing of the National Anthem and (almost always) a Flyover of
Navy Aircraft before the kickoff.

They then take their seats TOGETHER and remain together for the rest of the
game in sections 5, 6, 7, & 8 on the Blue Side of the Field. Except for
Firsties who may sit with their visitors, all of the rest of the Brigade
watch the game from these seats as a group. Much of the tailgating by
Parents is usually done in the Blue Parking Lot, where many of the area
Parents Clubs set up to serve the Mids something to eat after the game.

You are advised to park on the Blue (Home) Side of the Field even if your
seats are on the Gold Side. The Gold Parking lot is usually infested with
visiting team fans and tailgates for those "other" people who have to come
to our home games.

You will find people in the Parking lots starting to gather for breakfast as
early as 7:30 on game day and staying until well after dark. The entire
periphery of the grounds will have large to medium tents set up for Classes
which ALWAYS have a tailgate at EVERY home game. Some Companies also have
large tents with food and music entertainment after the game. The Blue
parking lot is where you'll find Mike and Sandi roaming around after every
home game as well.

Tickets are usually available for regular home games right up to kick off if
you don't mind sitting up high. If you know ahead of time that you will be
going to the game, call ahead and order tickets. 1-800-US-4-NAVY. There
really aren't any bad seats at the Stadium and our information is that ALL
of the seats have been replaced this year with Plastic Molded seats instead
of those hard aluminum benches that were previously in place. Seats on the
Gold side allow you to look for your Waldo during the game with binoculars.

Look for our USNA-Net Banner in the Blue Parking lot before and after every
home game. As always, Sandi and I will be there to meet you and take a few
pictures for the web site.

The soccer team has played two pre-season games, losing to Mount St. Mary's
1-0, which my son they could have won, having several breakaways, but didn't
and last night they beat Old Dominion 2-1, where he said they really played
well. He said they are really coming together. see many of the soccer fans
next weekend for the Navy Classic.

Hey Sports fans,

Does anybody have information about getting video tapes of all the
football games?

Does anybody have information on getting to see the games on DISH
TV services. Are they on TV besides Notre Dame and Army?

If the Navy does not have them televised maybe some of the other
Schools do like Duke?

I have found we can listen to the games via internet.

Thanks

Does anybody know how I might acquire tapes of the football games? If you
make tapes, I'm willing to pay for copies, mailing, bonus blessing, etc! And
JV games, too! I have tried e-mailing a couple of people in the athletic
department, have gotten no response.

Thanks.

Dear Navy Sports Fans,
My son has requested that I put his varsity 'N' on his letter sweater. I
am ready, willing, and hopefully able to do that, but I am not sure as to
the placement of the 'N' on the sweater. I know that it goes on the left
side of the sweater, but is it right above the pocket, offset, etc?
Anybody else have to do this? I think that I should put tearable
interfacing on the backside to stabilize the sweater, but if anyone has any
surefire solutions so that I can do this before we drive down to Annapolis
on Thursday night to spend the weekend that would be awesome. You can
either email the list or me privately. Thanks so much!

The Secret To This Family's Scholar Athletes Has Its Roots In A 6-foot-10
Grandfather

By Tom Wheatley
Of The St Louis Post-Dispatch

Charlie Share is the captain of a championship team. Again.

In 1958, the 6-foot-10 center was the glue on the St. Louis Hawks when they
won the National Basketball Association title.

Now, at 75, Charlie is immersed in his most cherished athletic role.

He is the proud grandfather of three major-college athletes and scholars who
made their mark at Parkway West High: Derek, Emily and Allie Jaskowiak.

Derek, 21, is a senior offensive lineman at the Naval Academy who checks in
at 6-4 and 280 pounds. He helped Parkway West to the football sectionals his
senior year, and he placed third in the discus at the state track meet with
a throw of over 164 feet, breaking a school record that stood for 31 years.
He also lettered in basketball.

Emily, 20, stands 6-1 and will be a redshirt freshman basketball player at
the University of Tulsa. She owns most of Parkway West's scoring records for
a season and a career. She led the team to the state finals as a senior, and
she was named first-team All-State after making the second team the previous
two years. She also was all-conference in softball for three years and
lettered in volleyball.

Allie, 18, stands 5-11 and is a senior at Parkway West. She has started in
volleyball and basketball since her freshman year, played with her sister on
the state runner-up basketball team and made second-team all-state last year
in volleyball. After sorting through numerous big-time offers to play either
sport, or both sports, she recently committed to play basketball at the
University of Southern California.

Charlie's heirs are also top students.

Derek, a Post-Dispatch scholar athlete at Parkway West, ranks 81st among
more than 1,000 seniors at Navy. Last spring he was chosen Second Class
(Junior) Midshipman of the semester. "It's a pretty big deal," Emily said.
"He got his own parking space."

After being commissioned an ensign in May, Derek hopes to attend the elite
"nuke school," train for surface nuclear warfare and serve on an aircraft
carrier.

Emily earned a 3.5 grade-point average in her first year at Tulsa despite
some major health hurdles. Before leaving for college, she took an elbow to
the mouth in a select basketball game. She needed over a year of repair work
on two front teeth and then came down with an internal illness. The ailments
kept her off the basketball court but not off the Dean's list.

Allie, an A student, was president of her class the first three years at
Parkway West. Among other leadership posts, she is executive president of
the student government.

How does one family crank out this triple-double of brains and brawn?

With the Jaskowiak (Jaz-KO-vee-ak) clan of Chesterfield, it's a happy
combination of nature and nurture.

And happy is the operative word. These siblings may be compulsively
competitive, but they don't crow about their victories. Better yet, the
quest for success hasn't turned them into drones. They have fun along the
way, poking fun at themselves and each other.

Much of this pluck and pluckishness traces back to Charlie, who lives in
Town and Country with his wife, Rose. He is a big, jolly man with a big,
jolly laugh, usually directed at himself.

As he joined the grandkids for a photo, he blurted, "My wife said to make
sure to shoot me from the side, because my face is too round to shoot me
head on. All these years, and now she tells me my face is too round."

Then, staring straight at the camera, he smiled and said, "But I don't do
everything she tells me to do!"

Charlie takes no bows for his grandkids' success, especially in school. He
points to their mother, his older daughter Cindy, who is assistant
superintendent for high school education in the Parkway district.

And the kids back him up on that.

"One time I got a C in handwriting," Emily said. "When my mom saw my report
card, she yelled, 'I will NOT have an average child!'"

Charlie laughed that deep laugh of his and said, "I've heard that comment.
Many times."

Charlie also defers credit for the sporting bloodlines of the Jaskowiak
kids.

He notes that Dennis, their father, was a 6-foot-3, 260-pound lineman at
Mizzou from 1970 to 1974.

Dennis, president of Boxtech Packaging, was a force in the family basketball
games, with a surprisingly deft shot for an ex-lineman. When fair play
failed him, he toughened up his brood by throwing his patriarchal weight
around.

One time Allie, a precocious tyke, was making an impressive show in a home
basketball shootout when her dad cried foul.

"He said, 'You're not allowed to jump doing free throws,'" said Allie, still
peeved. "I said, 'What?' It was at some ridiculous age where I couldn't get
the ball to the basket unless I jumped."

She got no sympathy from Grandpa Charlie.

"When I play," he said, "everything leaves the ground but my feet. That's my
jump shot."

Now and in his prime in the 1950s.

The kids have only seen glimpses of their young grandpa in action. Film
clips of those pioneer NBA games are rare, and shots of Charlie actually
launching a shot are true collector's items.

In 596 NBA games over nine years, he averaged just over eight points, as
well as eight rebounds.

In the '57-'58 championship season, he averaged just 8.6 points, along with
a robust 10.4 rebounds. But his tenacity, temperament and teamwork made him
the perfect captain on a team with future Hall of Fame marksmen Bob Pettit,
Cliff Hagan and Ed Macauley.

"Pettit and Hagan had the ball all the time," Charlie boomed, "as well they
should. I set picks and rebounded. On defense, I'd pick up everybody's man
who came through the middle. And since you can't jump, you foul him. And
then you sit out half the game in foul trouble."

The grandkids howled. It was the first time they'd heard that self-critique.

Charlie, who spent his first pro year in a now-defunct league, drowned them
out with that big laugh.

"I had a 10-year career," he said, "but I really only played two!"

Get the kids together with their Grandpa Charlie - their parents were at
work - and the zingers start to fly.

When Grandpa insisted, with a straight face, "I never spoiled them," the
girls rolled their eyes in tandem and let out a mocking "Ohhhh, noooo!" in
stereo.

Grandpa tends to get mawkish when doting about the grandkids. As he carries
on, they fidget noticeably.

He calls Derek "the kind of young man I wish I could have been."

Emily, he says, "is Number 44 in your program, Number One in your hearts."

He introduces Allie as "soon to be president of the United States." Maybe
so, but around the family she still answers to "Beetle Bomb."

"They called me that because I was the youngest," Allie said. "Grandpa
thought of it."

"That was something that was said when I was a youngster in Cincinnati,"
Charlie said, "indicating you were the last one in line. When we played
baseball, we'd throw the ball at the bat to see who would bat first. The one
closest to the bat would lead off. Whoever was farthest from the bat was
Beetle Bomb and went last."

It was Derek, the eldest, who entered high school looking like the runt of
the litter.

"He was actually scared of me for about four years," Emily said. "Admit it,
Derek! I was taller than he was and I weighed more than him. I'd do one of
these" - she brandishes a backhand - "and he'd flinch."

Derek just shook his head and smiled. He is so massive now that the point is
moot, even after complications from a recent appendectomy left him at a
svelte 270 pounds.

"I was 5-7, 130, when I played center on the freshman football team," Derek
said. "I was little, but I had played Little League football for about five
years. So I was like the crafty veteran. I knew all the tricks, like cutting
people's legs. I know a million more now."

Charlie said, "I always told him he'd be taller. I grew five inches in one
summer."

Grandpa knew best. "I grew five or six inches in about half a year," Derek
said.

What jump-started his growth was a temporary halt to his basketball career.

"My freshman year at West, I got cut from the basketball team," Derek said.
"My mom said, 'If you don't make the team, you can be my personal trainer at
the YMCA.'

"So she goes approximately nine times and quits going. I kept going and
lifting weights, and that's what allowed me to be big and strong."

Emily can verify that firsthand after countless family pickup games.

"I'm at the Y the other day playing basketball," she said, "and this guy was
there who just put his head down and pushes. No moves. I said, 'He's a
football player, right?'

"They said, 'How'd you know?' And I said, 'He plays exactly like my brother
plays. I hope I don't have to guard him.'"

The midshipman made no rebuttal.

"When I was a senior in high school, I scored 13 points," Derek said,
pausing for effect. "That's 13 points the entire season."

Two of them won a game at the buzzer in the prestigious Meramec Tournament.
Even those heroics are cause for abuse.

"Derek's kind of a horse, like me," said Grandpa Charlie. "He got a rebound
and somebody knocked him on the floor just as he was shooting the ball. And
it went in."

That brought the family rooting sections out of their scattered seats.

"Dad sits with Grandma Lydia, his mom, at the very top of the bleachers,"
Allie said. "Grandpa usually sits in the corner near our bench."

"With his clipboard," Emily said. "He keeps stats. On everybody, not just
us."

"In his own chair," Allie continued. "Oh, yeah, we bring our chairs
everywhere we go. Mom and Grandma Rose sit ... not where he is! Usually
somewhere lower in the bleachers or on the side."

"I was ostracized," Charlie said. "My wife was always afraid I'd say
something critical about one of the other youngsters. But I never hollered
out loud. Ever."

The girls roll their eyes again, but Grandpa is not the main culprit here.

"You could hear our mother over the crowd," Derek said.

"Her voice is high-pitched and carries well," said Emily. "And she knows
nothing about basketball. She'd just yell, 'Get a board!'"

"She has an uninhibited personality," Charlie said.

And Grandpa has a little more to do with the grandkids' sporting success
than he lets on.

"They may have gotten some of their interest from me," he said.

May have?

"Everything I know about basketball," said USC-bound Allie, "I learned from
experience. And Grandpa."

The lessons began when Charlie sold his packaging company in 1985. He spent
the next decade raising horses on five acres in Chesterfield. And helping to
raise the competitive spirit in three young grandkids.

"When they were 3 or 4, they'd come out and help clean the stables," Charlie
said. "After that, we'd sit down and do math and play tic-tac-toe and learn
how to make change for a dollar.

"When the weather got better, we'd go outside and have races and throw the
football. We'd have our own Olympics. Then Dennis put up a basket, and we'd
play games like HORSE. I used to put them out with left-handed layups. Now
they put me out with left-handed layups."

He stopped for a long moment.

"It was the best time of my life," he said.

And it won't end when Allie goes off to Los Angeles next year.

Charlie's daughter, Suzanne, has two daughters of her own: Katie, 11, and
Christine, 6.

"Katie is a tennis enthusiast," he said. "And Christine enjoys gymnastics."

Grandpa Charlie is excited about plunging into these new competitive worlds
with two more grandkids.

As he put it, "I have yet to turn my first somersault."

Dear Kit and others,

My son also asked me to attach his "N" to his letter sweater. After
agonizing over the same questions you have asked and getting absolutely no
conclusive advice from anyone, I convinced my son take his sweater to the
contract tailor in Bancroft Hall. They know EXACTLY how to do it. Although
I would have been thrilled to take on that "labor of love", I wanted it to
be done properly and was afraid I just wouldn't pull it off.

Also, since the mids are not authorized to wear the sweaters until they
change to winter uniforms (October?), there is still plenty of time to take
the sweater in and have the work done by the tailor shop.

Hope this helps.

Hi,
Does anyone know if the football parents have a tailgating location at the
Stadium for home games. I am trying to find out how the tailgating system
works there. We will be going up to Annapolis next weekend for the NC game
as well as my son's JV game on Sunday.

A reminder to Navy Football fans who will not be at the SMU game later
today...

You can listen to the game on your computer over the Internet by going to
our web site at www.USNA-Net.org and clicking on the Big Navy "N" on the
right side of the main page.

Find today's game at the top of the list of Navy games and click on the word
"Navy" in the column titled "Audio Coverage" on the right of the page.

Sandi and I will attend the NC State Game next weekend so we'll see you
there but for today, we'll be listening with the rest of you on the
Internet.

This is a two-fold question. My son is a Plebe this year and I was
wondering how the Mids are selected to go to specific away football games.
The one I'm particularly interested in is the Wake Forest game, November
23rd. I can easily plan a business trip to North Carolina for the week
prior to the game and just stay over until Sunday so I could go to the game.
Also, my son has a very close friend (lovely young lady) who is a freshman
at Wake, and this would be just a wonderful opportunity for them to see each
other, plus watch a great football game. I suggested to my Ought 6 Plebe to
ask his squad leader, or company commander, if there was a way to request
going to a particular away game. Hopefully this was the correct advice.

Now for the other question, which is related to the first. How do you
purchase tickets for Navy away games? Is there a certain number of
available away tickets that the USNA ticket office can sell, or do you have
to get tickets from the particular home team, in this case Wake Forest?

Any and all help from the more experienced roller coaster riders would be
appreciated!!

Best regards,

Sorry but being from the South We cherish our football moments. And since my
son is on the Navy team just have to make sure everyone knows that Navy
totally dominated the SMU game. My son is on the JV team now but will be on
Varsity one day and just wanted to say how proud we are of the Varsity team
under Coach Johnson this year!!! AWESOME!!!!!

Well Done!
Go Navy
