Paul Johnson's Postgame Comments Following Navy's 38-7 Win Over SMU

Q. Are you happy?

A. I'm happy for the players. They've suffered through, I can only imagine
last season had to be miserable. I'm happy for them.

Q. Can you talk about the two special teams' turnovers early in the game
that seemed to turn the game around?

A. Well, I think anytime you get turnovers it certainly helps you. We came
out, we weren't, I think we were ready to play, we were keyed up, but we
made some mistakes early. We made a lot of mistakes tonight, but we made a
lot of big plays too and when you do that it gives you a chance. We got
some turnovers, the defense did a great job of getting some turnovers, and
the offense did a nice job of getting points out of them. That's the way
you play as a football team. The nature of what we do on offense, you're
going to hit some big plays.

Q. Were you surprised the offense exploded this fast, I mean right out of
the gate you get that many yards.

A. I don't even know how many yards we had, but we didn't execute the way I
would like too and I think our guys can play better. But we made some plays
and like I told them, hopefully we'll improve more from the first game to
the second game, because we hit some plays at times, but golly we can play
better than that. We didn't block them very well inside, we had too many
missed assignments, having said that we played our butt off and when you
play hard you give yourself a chance.

Q. Do you think SMU didn't take you guys seriously?

A. You'll have to ask them that. I can only worry about one team. I have
my hands full coaching mine; I can't worry about the other team.

Q. How did you feel about the way Craig played?

A. I thought he made some plays. Craig can play better, but he made some
plays. He hit some big plays for us. The biggest thing we did offensively
was that we took care of the ball and if you do that you give yourself a
chance to win. My goal is to not beat ourselves and I don't think we did
that.

Q. I hate to ask this, but are you surprised about the outcome?

A. No

Q. How come?

A. Because I expected to win. I told our guys in a meeting right before we
left the hotel that tonight when we got out of here don't be surprised. I
mean, because we were prepared and if you're prepared and play hard you
always have a chance.

Q. Did you do anything after the first couple of series. It seemed like
your offense really opened up?

A. Yeah, we started blocking the right guy. Early on we were just kind of
all over the place. We expected them to be in an eight man front and they
came out and lined up in a 4-3 or a 6-1 and we played against our own
defense every day all spring and all fall, but it was like we had never seen
it. It just blew our mind. Then once we got them calmed down on the
sideline, we got it going.

Q. The two long option runs that Candeto had, was there anything you saw
there that made that play break?

A. Yeah, they didn't have enough guys to that side.

Q. How about the defense?

A. I thought the defense played great. They gave up some plays, but when you
get as many turnovers as what the defense got, that gives you a great chance
to win. I thought they did a great job.

Interesting to read the Dallas Daily news take on the
Navy/SMU game.

Dismal debut: SMU ripped in Bennett's first game
Five turnovers help seal Mustangs' fate in 38-7 loss to Navy

09/01/2002

By RICK ALONZO / The Dallas Morning News

UNIVERSITY PARK It all started to go wrong for SMU when the pre-game
fireworks caught the grass on fire behind the South end zone Saturday. The
rest of the day went up in smoke, too, for the Mustangs and coach Phil
Bennett.

What was to be a return to glory for the Mustangs program instead quickly
turned into a dark performance. Navy, a team that had gone 1-20 the last two
years, made that happen by capitalizing on five turnovers.

In what can only be described as a shocking start to his head coaching
career, Bennett watched Navy stun his team, 38-7, before 25,744 at Ford
Stadium. The Mustangs can blame themselves for much of the damage. They
committed four turnovers in the first half to derail Bennett's hopes of
winning the season opener.

It was the worst losing debut by an SMU coach since 1915, the school's first
season of football.
"Am I discouraged? Yes," said Bennett, who was hired last December to turn
around a program that has had just one winning season since the return from
the death penalty in 1989. "But believe me, nobody is going to work harder
than this staff and these kids. We will get this going. I know it's easier
said than done. But I still have confidence in these players and my
coaches."

Navy coach Paul Johnson was making his Division I-A debut, also.

"I'm happy for our players," Johnson said. "After suffering through what
they had to endure last season [0-10], I can only imagine how good this
feels."

The one nasty bug that Bennett has most wanted to squash since he was hired
Dec. 5 turnovers bit the Mustangs once again.

"We wanted to show this was a new Mustang team, and we didn't do that
tonight," said Jonas Rutledge, who muffed a punt and fumbled a kickoff.

Navy represented the most winnable game on paper for the Mustangs, but the
Midshipmen scored 21 points off turnovers in the first half to jump out to a
28-7 lead. Bennett's team was favored by 10 = points against Navy. With
Texas Tech coming to Ford Stadium in Week 2, the Mustangs will have to find
a way to correct the turnover woes to have a chance against what figures to
be a vast step up in competition.

It fell apart for SMU early. After taking a 7-0 lead on a 13-yard touchdown
pass from Tate Wallis to John Hampton in the first quarter, the Mustangs
fell behind thanks to turnovers.

Rutledge muffed a punt, which Navy recovered. Two plays later, Navy scored
on a 9-yard run by Eric Roberts to even the score. On the ensuing kickoff,
Rutledge fumbled the return.

Navy recovered and went on to take a 14-7 advantage when quarterback Craig
Candeto scored the first touchdown of his career.

SMU answered with a long drive that began at its own 23. On third and goal
at the Navy 4, Wallis had a pass batted at the line and Navy intercepted.
Candeto got off a 56-yard run for a touchdown to make it 21-7 with 10:04
remaining in the half.

Navy, which hadn't won a road game since 1999, went ahead by 21 points on
Candeto's third touchdown with under five minutes remaining in the half on a
drive that was keyed by a 69-yard pass to Roberts.

Once Navy got ahead early, the Midshipmen relied on their option offense to
steadily move the ball and run time off the clock. SMU gave up 399 yards of
offense, including 293 on the ground.

"They drove it down our throats tonight," linebacker Vic Viloria said. "We
were surprised."

Bennett spent the last three years as Kansas State's defensive coordinator
and has been involved in coaching SMU's defense along with coordinator Jim
Gush. Bennett blamed himself for what he said was not putting his players in
the right position to stop Navy's option.

"We didn't give our kids a chance for success tonight, and that's my fault,"
he said.

The Mustangs offense, predicated on the run, is not designed to overcome big
deficits. Wallis is a redshirt freshman whose first college action came
against Navy.

Wallis finished the game 12-of-31 passing for 144 yards and two
interceptions. Keylon Kincade had 101 yards rushing on 20 carries for SMU.

Hey Sports fans,

The Navy Women came to So Calif. this weekend.
They defeated Long Beach 2-0 on Friday
Today they defeated Cal State Univ. Northridge 1-0

Great game today, Navy women dominated the game
from the outset they kept the ball on the CSUN side
of the field.
The only goal of the game was scored in the last 3 minutes of play
in the game.
It is a tribute to USNA to watch these physically fit young women
play this game. They all look to be the picture of health.
Do they ever get tired??

I was amazed the amount of Navy support at the game and the
parents that follow the team accross the country. Navy had as much
if not more fans than CSUN had at the game.

Go Navy Sports! Starting off the season with a bang.
Go Girls, Go Soccer!

The men's soccer team played 2 outstanding games this weekend, beating
Manhatten College 3-0 and U Mass, 3-2, in monsoon type rains. They won the
Navy Classic and next weekend will play Towson at 1PM at the University of
Maryland Baltimore fields in the Battle of Baltimore. It should be a great
weekend for all who can come down, soccer on Friday and Sunday, football on
Saturday.

Great Article on Navy football

------------------------------------------------------------------------
By Kevin Van Valkenburg
Sun Staff
Originally published September 2, 2002

Huddled in a Dallas locker room, the Navy football team sang "Anchors
Aweigh" at the top of their lungs Saturday night.

They said the Lord's Prayer, and then they counted off the points in their
38-7 win over Southern Methodist, shaking their fists as they barked out
each number.

But mostly the Midshipmen just smiled. After all, they could rightfully call
themselves winners, and it had been a long time since that was true. Navy
went 0-10 last season.

"We expected to win," said Navy quarterback Craig Candeto, who rushed for
154 yards and three touchdowns. "You have to do that at this level or you
shouldn't even play the games. I will say it feels pretty good, though."

Amid all the euphoria, Mids coach Paul Johnson was already thinking about
next week's game against North Carolina State. As well as his team played
against SMU, Johnson was adamant that the Mids could play better.

"We didn't block them very well inside, and we had too many missed
assignments," he said. "The difference between this week and next week is
going to be tremendous. ... Now, having said that, we played our butt off,
and when you play hard you give yourself a chance."

Navy's defense was perhaps the biggest surprise against the Mustangs. On the
third series of the game, its starting safety, Lenter Thomas, aggravated a
right-knee sprain that kept him out of most of the preseason, and SMU tight
end John Hampton beat him for a 13-yard touchdown.

Thomas had to leave the game, but Navy didn't miss a beat. It would give up
yardage to SMU's offense, but that was all.

"Our motto is, 'Snap it again,' " said Mids middle linebacker Andy
Sinitiere, who made seven tackles against the Mustangs. "As long as the ball
isn't in the end zone, and you have to snap it again, we feel like we've got
a chance."

That strategy helped force five turnovers Saturday night, three of which led
to 21 Navy points. Though Navy's pass defense had looked shaky at times
during the preseason, SMU quarterback Tate Wallis couldn't find any
weaknesses; he threw two interceptions and was sacked twice.

"We were just working on getting the ball back to our offense," Sinitiere
said. "Obviously, they were playing so well, we just wanted to do our job.

One couldn't help but wonder: Did SMU, which was boasting a turnaround
season under new coach Phil Bennett, overlook the Mids, losers of 10
straight games? After all, it was no secret that the Mustangs were looking
forward to this week's game with rival Texas Tech.

"You'll have to ask them that," Johnson said. "I can only worry about one
team. I have my hands full coaching mine; I can't worry about the other
team."

Said Candeto: "I tried not to listen to what their players were saying in
the papers," Candeto said. "I just know we came ready to play."

The game bore a striking resemblance to Johnson's debut as Navy's offensive
coordinator in 1995. In that game, Mids quarterback Chris McCoy (making his
first career start) rushed for 273 yards and threw for 125 as Navy routed
heavily favored SMU, 33-2.

Navy went 5-6 in 1995, and the next year Johnson helped the Mids earn a trip
to the Aloha Bowl. Is it too soon to imagine these Mids accomplishing
something similar?

"Hopefully, we'll just improve from the first game to the second game,"
Johnson said. "We hit some plays at times, but, golly, we can play better
than that."

NOTES: Johnson improved to 6-1 in season openers. His only loss came against
Georgia, when he coached at Georgia Southern. ... Gordon England, the
secretary of the Navy, spoke briefly to the team after the game. "I'm so
proud of you, I can hardly put it into words," he said. ... Navy announced
before the game that junior defensive end Steve Adair had been suspended for
the game for "violating academy rules." Adair, who did not make the trip,
was listed as the backup to starter Dan Person. Navy officials said Adair's
status for this week's game has not been determined. Junior Ralph Henry, a
graduate of Eastern Tech, took Adair's place in the rotation and tipped a
pass that Kevin Schwind intercepted, leading to a Navy touchdown.

For those of you who just can't get enough news about Navy Sports, we'd like
to remind you that there is yet another mailing list to which you may wish
to subscribe. This one is maintained by NavySports.com and is information
only. You can't write in to it the way you write to our USNA-Sports list
but the mailings (sometimes several per day!) cover virtually all Navy
Sports from Baseball to Women's Volleyball.

One of our members has forwarded several articles to our USNA-Sports list
which came from that mailing list this past week on Navy Football and it
reminded me that we haven't posted the subscription information for that
mailing list for quite some time.

If you would like to join the Navy Sports E-mail List, send an e-mail to:

    join-navysports@maillist.usna.edu

with the word subscribe in the body of the message, followed by your name.
Like so...

    subscribe John Doe

Leave the SUBJECT blank and do not write anything else in the body of the
message. That will just mess things up. That's all you have to do and you
will be added automatically to the Academy's Official Sports Mailing List.
You will begin receiving email updates on Football and everything else that
is current, almost immediately.

Be warned... The number of email coming from that list can be several
messages each day and it covers ALL USNA sports. You can't pick and choose
this sport or that. It covers ALL sports. But it's great coverage!
Interviews with the coaches, Team members and Staff. Statistics, rosters
and play by play reviews of the major events. If you love Navy Sports, you

For the most recent photos on the work that has been done to the stadium,
you might want to check out the following link. Phase I of the $40 Million
Stadium renovation is nearly complete. There has been a lot of work done
since last year - notably the new scoreboard and the new seats, which all
have backs - and the seat colors (blue and gold - with the gold seats
spelling out "GO NAVY"). This can easily be seen from the roads outside the
stadium, and even from the air if you fly into BWI (and the approach is over
Annapolis).

http://www.navysports.com/info/stadium/

Mike and I are looking forward to our first glimpse of the renovations and
that big "GO NAVY" when we arrive in Annapolis tomorrow. Hope to see many
of you at the game...

Go Navy, beat N.C. State!!

Maureen and I have been involved in feeding crew members at meets in the
past, and since we are brand new to the Navy Crew family we are interested
in knowing if such an organization exists or if it is a free for all. Not
that any crew member would pass up food, but we do want to follow existing
guide lines if they exist.

Is it possible to find out when and where the Mids are competing? I live in
Michigan but could travel to Ohio easily if they had any meets there, for
example.

The CC meet schedule is available on-line at navysports.com. Click on the
Mens or Womens Cross Country at the bottom of the opening page! They are
not in OH at all this year but Regionals are at Indiana State and so is the
NCAA Final.

Hope to see you at some meets (The women are running their first meet today
at William and Mary, Williamsburg, VA - GO NAVY!) Next Saturday is a home
meet (Invitational) at the USNA Golf Course - Firstie parents: come cheer
them on!

Correction to what I previously posted! The CC teams do run twice at Indiana
this fall, but one meet is an Invitational (Oct 5) and the other is NCAA
Finals (we hope)! on Nov 25. The site for Regionals was TBD the last time I
checked.

Hey Football fans,

Opposite of last week, Losing 19-65
We fumbled the game away
Before 3 mins in the game NCS 14 points
We got punts blocked for TD's
We got our tails kicked on the field.
We could not stop the long pass, we are not fast enought,

We could move the ball and a ball control offense
Once you fall behind by 25+ points the ball control does not matter
Mistakes, Not prepared for a top 25 team.

Two weeks should be a different story.
Northwestern.
On the bright side for some maybe some 2nd and 3rd string players
may get a chance to show their stuff this next week.

Punt team is really hurting???

A lot of work to do, Academics and Football is huge!
Go Navy we are here behind you all the way to a bowl game ths year!

Well, not quite what I had hoped for at my first NAVY game! There never was
hope as right from the beginning we could tell it would be a l-o-n-g day!

I do have 2 questions, for you seasoned Navy football fans --

why doesn't the Navy band play during the game. One of the things that
really irritated me was that you could hear North Carolina's band over
everything! And not just when they had done particularly well, either. I
kept hoping the Navy band would play to pump up the team. Is there a reason
for this?

I noticed that a lot of the Plebes remained outside the stadium during the
second half(hope I'm not getting any body in trouble here). If Navy had
made a touch down, would they have been in trouble for missing the push ups?

I just received USA Hockey's American Hockey Magazine. The magazine is sent to
all persons on record as registered to play in or affiliated with USA Hockey -
youth through adult. The following article is about hockey at the Service
Academies and the tie in of the Academies with the future military leadership
of the Nation. The coverage of Navy Hockey in the article is great and Coach
Randazzo, his staff and the Academy should be very proud.

If the link is not allowed by usna-net rules, I apologize. You can find the
article on the USA Hockey website. Look for the American Hockey Magazine link.

Hi All,

If any of you have Mids who are on the soccer team and are unable to make the
tournament here in Birmingham, if you will e-mail me their # I will do my
best to get some pictures of them. Although I do not have a digital camera,
I will order a disk when I get the pictures developed and try to put them on
Imagestation. Eventually I will figure it our but without my #1 computer
help (06 Midshipman) it may take me awhile. Also, I will be happy to send
you the prints if you give me your addresses.
Just remember, you would do the same for me if situations were reversed--we
are a family and your sons, at least for this next weekend, will be part of
my family (much to the joy of my 16 year old daughter and 17 and 15 year old
nieces)!
Let me know if I can get anything for them--I will offer my cell phone on
Sunday (free weekends) to all that need to call.

In the meantime, have a great week!!!!

Dear all,

We have finally been able to arrange finances and time out from work to
attend our first Army-Navy game this December. We are from the West Coast and
have never been to NY. Does anyone have any suggestions about places to stay
and where to fly into? Are we too late to try and arrange something? Any
recommendation are welcome and deeply appreciated, best, Maria

We're traveling to Annapolis to see our daughter Angie and watch the
Navy/Northwestern football game this upcoming weekend. This one is special.
Angie is a twin, and her sister Sarah attends Northwestern (pre-med). We
plan to root for both teams. (Don't worry, we'll probably root harder for
the home team.) So if you see someone at the game wearing a Navy shirt and
a Northwestern hat, it's probably me. Stop and say hello!

Northwestern hasn't started their fall semester yet. Last year at this
time, we had airline tickets to take Sarah to Chicago to start school.
Angie was coming to Chicago too, and we were all going to the
Navy/Northwestern game together. In the aftermath of 9/11 the game and our
flights were cancelled. We drove Sarah to Chicago (1200 miles from
Houston), and came back in three days. We're hoping for a more fun trip
this time!

GO NAVY!!
GO NORTHWESTERN!!

NORTHWESTERN GAME TO BE TELEVISED BY HDNET

ANNAPOLIS, Md.- Navy's home football game on Saturday against Northwestern
(12 noon, Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium) will be televised live by
HDNet TV. Pete Medhurst will call the play-by-play, while former Navy
fullback Omar Nelson ('97) will handle the color commentary.

HDNet television is available on DirecTV on Channel 199, but you must

Navy Soccer fought a great fight today but lost to UAB 1-0. Navy dominated
the 1st half of the game against a squad that went to the Sweet 16 in soccer
last year. Their 2nd half play was just as hard and UAB scored on a bit of a
fluke which started with a questionable call at midfield.

Results 9/13 Navy 2 Birmingham-Southern 1
                   9/15 Navy 0 UAB 1

Parents of Navy soccer players who did not get to come to the game--you've
got a great bunch of young men who worked their hardest to win!

Go Navy!

Dear all,

Just to thank all of you for the wealth of information you gave us about the
Army-Navy game. I received about 35 e-mails! You are all great. We are very
exited to visit the "Big Apple" but, as I am sure you can appreciate, we look
forward the most to seeing our son, even if only for a couple of days. Thanks
again and see you all at the game, Maria

I don't know if this has been mentioned, but the Women's softball team also
won their game this weekend. It certainly makes the Parent's Weekend Picnic
more fun! Go Navy! Go Softball!

We got an IM from our daughter last night saying they had a "swimming smoker"
(if that isn't a contradiction in terms, nothing is) yesterday. Since most
of her communication is void of real details, I was wondering if anyone could
fill in the particulars of how these "smokers" work.

She did mention that Third Batt (I assume she meant Battalion) had a good day
yesterday. Are these competitions usually done at the battalion level or are
smokers more often a Company versus Company thing? How often do they have
these... and for what sports?

Thanks for any information you can give.

Hi Navy Family,

Living just south of Milwaukee we thought that we'd try to make the
heavyweight crew meet in Milwaukee tomorrow. Any info on exact place on
Milwaukee river, time??? We'd even try to bring some donuts and
Gatorade. Any other parents going to be there? We don't often get the
chance to host any Midshipmen in our area.

Hi Navy Fans...especially those in Southern California!

I just heard from my son that the crew of the Navy 44' sailboat Pax will
competing in the Lloyd Phoenix National Offshore Championship hosted by the
Long Beach Yacht Club, October 2 thru 6. Anyone in the So Cal interested in
more details can find more info on the following links:

http://www.ecsa.net/events.htm

Long Beach Yacht Club Link: http://www.lbyc.org/contact.htm

The following is from the Eastern Connecticut Sailing Assn web page:

> The Lloyd Phoenix National Offshore Championship was conceived in 1985 after
> the discovery of a long forgotten trophy found in a storage chest belonging
> to a US Naval Academy graduate named Lloyd Phoenix. The US Naval Academy
> Sailing Squadron (the recipients of the donated trophy) decided to put up
> the trophy as a means of improving relations between the Academy and the
> civilian yachting community. Since that time the competition has been held
> at alternating locations of Long Beach Yacht Club (CA) and the Naval
> Academy in Annapolis (MD). The Finals for the Lloyd Phoenix Championship
> will be held at Long Beach, CA October 2002.

Enjoy!

Dear Soccer Family,

Although it took me hours and hours to upload, reload, post, un-post etc.,
etc, I finally got an album done on ImageStation. Having only a dial-up
modem, this was a lesson in patience. Please have some patiece with me if
there are repeats on the album.

You have got a wonderful group of young men--you should be very proud. I
have a few more pictures of the soccer team after the game on Sunday when
they were in their dress whites getting ready to go back to the airport, but
it is on a roll that is not complete. For the Ruhs family, your family
picture is on that last roll.

Hi everyone,

While arranging for a care package order to my son (from a business owned by
one of our members) I learned that the crew of the Hornet will be competing
in the Nationals instead of the crew of Pax. Earlier this weekend I had
shared news that I had received from my son about the Varsity Offshore
Sailing Team (VOST) regatta assignments.

The best we could figure out is that there was either an error in the early
information shared or there was a change in the crew assignment. Its our
understanding that the crew assignment was based upon the type of boat
secured for their use in the competition, giving the team a better shot at
bringing home the Lloyd Phoenix Trophy.

I apologize for any disappointment this may have caused...I can only imagine
how I'd feel had my son been assigned to Pax!

As a side note, my care package will be prepared with a mom's tender loving
care and delivered to my son's absolute surprise tomorrow. Thanks so much,
Sandi!

Hello,
I originally sent this to the wrong listserv, so I'll try again. Could someone
let me know the particulars about the game this weekend? Fort instance, are
good tickets still available at the gate? Where to sit in the stadium...etc.
Many thanks,

On Saturday, September 21, The United States Naval Academy Triathlon Team won
the Mid-Atlantic Regional Championships held at Smith Mountain Lake, Virginia
for a second year in a row. Navy dominated the field winning seven of the
top eleven spots. The entire results can be found at:

http://www.set-upinc.com/blcmen.htm

Navy is the current National Collegiate Triathlon Champions, having
defeated over 87 teams last spring in Memphis.

In October the World Championship of Triathlon will be held in Kona,
Hawaii, if you get a chance to watch this grueling, emotional display of
mental and physical endurance, proudly, keep in mind. A little known fact is
a Naval Academy graduate, Captain John F. Collins, Class of 1959 started the
sport of Triathlon while stationed in Hawaii.

Hi to all interested. We attended the JV football game last Fri. and the
Varsity game on Sat. both of which were exciting games!

I just wanted to report on the JV game for those of you that couldn't make
it. Navy played a terrific game against Hargrave Military. We have a
hometown friend on the Hargrave team. We talked to several of the Hargrave
parents during the game. Even though Navy lost 14-3 we found out we were
playing against some of the top recruits in the country that couldn't make
the ACT score to go to a Div. 1 school. One
Dad we talked to had played in the NFL and his son was The number 1 recruit
last year!

So basically we held this team of Div. 1 All Stars 14-3. This was also their
5th game and they had beaten everyone else by 40, 50, 60 points!
Anyway it was a great game! Can't wait for Naps!

A couple of years ago, when the army-navy game was played in Baltimore, there
was a bus trip from Philadelphia to Baltimore. I was wondering if there was
going to be one for this year's game to the Meadowlands. If anyone has any
information on this, you can email me privately.

Thanks.

Just thought someone might find it noteworthy that the USNA Lacrosse JV team
played the Japanese National Team to a 7-7 tie. This was the first time the
JV team had played a game together against an outside opponent. Apparently
the game was quite an experience for our son who said he had never played
opponents speaking another language entirely. USNA had 4 goals scored against
them quickly in the first quarter but came back and thought they would win the
game until a tying goal for Japan with 30 secs left. Apparently,
international lax rules call for no overtime. I am relaying the replay from my
son, I hope it resembles the truth. Nonetheless, we are proud of the USNA JV
Lacrosse team for a job well done.
