Plebe Dad -

My plebe son has also been placed on the taxi squad. We're not sure if he would've been on the JV roster, but it turns out that since he attended Northwestern Prep through the USNA Foundation, and then a local community college for 1 semester to comply with the Foundation requirements, the NCAA rule is that he is ineligible to play this year because he was a full-time student for 1 semester, taking over 12 units. He did not play baseball for the community college, and did not practice with them....in fact, purposely stayed away from them. We just found out this week of his ineligibility due to this rule. The flip side, which doesn't make any sense, is that if he had attended a 2-semester prep school through the Foundation, or had been a complete civilian transfer student that had taken 2 semesters at a community college with 24 units, and not played ball, he would STILL have all of his eligibility!!!! The fact that he only attended for 1 semester as a full-time student is what does him in. This has been confirmed with the USNA NCAA office, and the NAAA.

It's my understanding that the kids are placed on the taxi squad if they have shown in tryouts that they have skills that the baseball coaches would like to use in the future, so they want to keep the player in the baseball program, but just don't have room for him right now on the roster. And/or there's eligibility issues like in my son's case.

I welcome any other input on this subject from more knowledgeable parents.

The "taxi squad" is a term for the group of playersz that need to lift

Are these plebes on the "taxi squad" still working out with the bb team?
It is my understanding that there is no JV B B team, does any one know if
this is true? It seems the information given the candidates is pretty
vague. Any information on the BB situation would be appreciated.

Dear Football Parents,

Yesterday I asked if the JV players would also remain at USNA for Thanksgiving
break. The response from other parents is yes.

Has anyone heard of a practice schedule for Thanksgiving?
Questions that come to my mind:

1. Will Mids be allowed to leave the Yard to visit sponsors or families within
a reasonable driving distance? The timing of practice on Wed, Thurs (if any)
and Friday will effect holiday plans.

2. Will there be a dinner in King Hall where parents could join their Mids who
are required to stay?

Thank you.

Please address your responses to the sports net. Many families are interested.

Hi,

Is there anyone with information about the Pride Bowl tomorrow (Sun)? The
Sprint football team is playing against Army. I have relatives who live in
Stamford, CT who are interested in going. My son is on the team. They'll need
ticket info & directions.

It sounds like it's near Rutgers. Is that true?

Thanks,

Directions are available on the crew team web page which is accessible
through the "net" home page.(http://www.usna-net.org/)

Go to S for sports at the site index, which will get you to the USNA
athletic Association page. In the left column "Select Sport", select
Women's crew (their going too). From their home page select Schedule to
get you to http://www.navywomenscrew.org/schedules/schedule_2003.htm.
Select Fall 2002/Spring 2003 and for the Navy Day regatta if you click on
Philadelphia, PA you'll eventually find
http://www.usna.edu/WomensCrew/directions/philadel.htm. These directions
assume you are approaching Philadelphia from the south on Interstate 95

Hi,

We have tickets to the Navy-Rice game this Saturday that we will not be able
to use. The tickets are on the Gold side (darn, but can see the Mids!!) in
Section
130, Row 17, Seats 23 and 24.

We wouldn't expect to be paid for the tickets or parking pass. Assuming
we'd have to overnight the tickets, we would like to be reimbursed for those
overnight charges.

If you'd like them, please email me ASAP or call me @ (845) 758-3702.

Hey Navy football fans,

7-7 tie at half time.
Rice runs the ball 19 times up the middle to score
in the 3rd quarter. No adjustments made ????
Two 4th down runs to get 1st downs.
Navy can not answer on offense or defense.

Navy Fumbles to end the game with the ball on the
Rice 40 yd ln.

Candeto played hurt (thigh bruse) in the 3rd and 4th quarter
Polanco comes in with less than 2:30 mins left in the 4th qtr.

NAVY DID NOT PITCH THE BALL TODAY!
How can you run the option without pitching the ball?

Final score Navy 10 - 17

Let me know what you think? Navy now 1 win 5 loses
Talk Navy Football the good and the bad today!
Do more changes need to be made?

--------------------------------------------

Offense: While Navy still holds the #3 spot in rushing offense and #40
overall, they still have trouble holding onto the ball. The Mids have also
struggled mightily to score points of late, with only two TDs in their last 6
quarters of play vs. Air Force and Duke. A small advantage to Rice.

Defense: Navy's defense is giving up almost 480 yards per game and until they
can prove they are able to stop a team not named "SMU" (or until Army's
season plays out), the opposition will always hold this advantage.'Nuff said
- edge, Owls.

Special Teams: Surprisingly, Navy's special teams weren't that bad against
Air Force. If the Mids' returners can actually hang onto the ball this week,
I'll call this one Even

Coaching: I'm still a believer in Paul Johnson. I'm impressed that he benched
the two game-breakers on offense due to fumble-itis, and have a feeling that
he'll have a couple of tricks up his sleeve to get the Mids to feel that they
can actually win a game. At home, too. The pick here is Navy.

Intangibles: I'll go with Rice just because a) they're coming off a win; and
b) because they're familiar with Annapolis, having played here last year. The
fly-by won't scare them.

Prediction: This is a tough call, but I'm not convinced Navy believes they
can win a game if things start to go against them. Against SMU, everything
went their way. They started out well against both Duke and Air Force, but
when things went south, they went in a hurry. Success breeds success, and
until Navy can overcome adversity and win a game, I'm going to be a
pessimist. I'll say 34-21, Rice.

Can anyone tell me if the Meadowlands is an open stadium? There seems to be
some discrepancy as to whether or not its covered. (Hope not... how are we
going to see the Blue Angels if the top's closed??)

Hi Navy Family,

With the Army- Navy game soon at hand, just wondering if anyone had any
experience with tailgating at the Meadowlands stadium. We are planning
on driving out with our own gas grill and about 18 dozen bratwurst for a
tailgater for our WI Midshipmen and parents who will be attending.

Any words of advise- what parking lot, its location, time to arrive to
obtain good spot to tailgate, etc.- would be welcome.

Thanks,
Cindi Larsen

I have recently heard from a reliable source that varsity football players at the Air Force Academy are not required to serve military time after graduation. Has anyone else heard this, and can anyone confirm or deny this rumor?

All service academy graduates incur a service obligation - basically five
years. (Some are longer - depending on service selection and the amount of
training received - i.e, Naval aviation.) However, there have been
instances where individuals (or the professional teams with whom they
signed) have "bought out" their obligations by paying back the cost of their
educations.

It rarely happens, though.

Navy to Make Competitive Changes:
More I-AA Opponents Planned;
Recruiting, Active Duty Requirements Also to Be Altered

By Christian Swezey
Special to The Washington Post
Friday, October 18, 2002; Page D09

In an effort to become more competitive, Navy's football program will
schedule more Division I-AA opponents, overhaul its recruiting, permit
players who make NFL teams to curb their active duty requirements and make
day-to-day changes with the players' military commitments, first-year coach
Paul Johnson said.

The Midshipmen (1-5) have lost 25 of 27 entering Saturday's game against
Boston College (3-2). They have been outscored 229-131 this year and have
not won a home game since 1999.

"There's no question where the program was when we came in; they had won one
game in two years," Johnson said. "The administration seems like they want
to win, they are willing to do the things to make us a winning program. . .
. Part of my job is to tell them what we need to win. Are they going to give
me everything? No. But I am going to try and push the envelope and let them
know what I think we need to win.

"You can't be recruiting against Georgetown and playing against N.C. State.
It just doesn't work that way. . . . Nobody has given up on this season, but
you have to be realistic."

Johnson, Athletic Director Chet Gladchuk and Academy Superintendent Rear
Adm. Richard Naughton meet once a week to discuss the program.

===========================================================
The administration already has given the football program some concessions.
For instance, Navy will permit its graduates who make an NFL team to serve
two years of active duty and either five or six years in the reserves
instead of having them serve five years active duty upon graduation.
===========================================================

This practice occasionally has been used at Air Force. Johnson said he
believes it will help with recruiting. When he was hired, he said he would
tell recruits they could spend four years at the academy and two years of
active duty -- for a total of six years -- before they could play in the
NFL. At a civilian school, he said he tells them, they would spend five
years (including a redshirt) before they could join the NFL.

"It's a good place to start," Johnson said. "I think it's a win-win. I think
it helps the Navy get exposure. I hope one day they can go straight in [to
the NFL], and then maybe spend their time afterward as a recruiter."

Other concessions include:

? Navy's practices are regular length Tuesdays and Wednesdays; previously,
those practices were cut short so players could attend academic lectures.

? The players spend 45 minutes more per day with football than they had with
previous coaches.

? Between 40 and 50 players were given the same summer schedule -- i.e. the
same summer cruises, same four-week leave and same summer school session --
so they could spend more time working out together in Annapolis.

? Spring practices are no longer scheduled around drills and marching
exercises, as they once were.

Navy also will schedule more Division I-AA opponents, beginning next year.
The Midshipmen replaced a game at nationally ranked Washington with a home
game against Division I-AA Virginia Military Institute to open the 2003
season.

Former coach Charlie Weatherbie had removed the I-AA teams from the
schedule, and Navy has not played a I-AA team since it defeated Colgate,
52-24, in 1997.

Navy finished 7-4 that year but was not eligible for a bowl because two of
the wins came against I-AA opposition.

"We need to schedule people who are on the same playing field as us,"
Johnson said. "We need to play games where we have a better chance to win.
Playing I-AA teams would do that. . . . Bowl eligible? Let's just worry
about winning some games before we worry about going to a bowl. Navy's been
to one bowl in the past 20 years. I know, because I was here for it."

Johnson also noted George Welsh, Navy's winningest coach, had a 41-44 record
against Division I-A opponents but was 14-2 against I-AA teams.

The program's recruiting philosophy also has changed under Johnson. Previous
coaches would bring in as many as 100 recruits in a class and hope that 10
or 20 became good players.

"That's not the way to do it," he said. "You can't recruit good kids who
work hard and expect some of them to turn into players. You have to recruit
good players. If you're not getting told 'No' by recruits, you're not doing
your job."

The changes already have taken shape, at least at the Naval Academy Prep
School. The team is 5-1 following a 15-12 victory over Navy's junior varsity
team last Sunday. The players at NAPS, a one-year postgraduate school in
Newport, R.I., are not bound to attend the academy after this year, though
many will do so.

Three of NAPS's offensive linemen -- Zach Gallion (6 feet 4, 295 pounds),
Justin Carson (6-5, 290) and Ryan Roeling (6-4, 282) -- are bigger than all
but a couple of Navy's linemen.

Overall, Johnson said making Navy a winning team will be a challenge.

"But that's part of the reason I took the job, because it was so
challenging," he said. "As I say all the time, this wasn't broken overnight,
and it won't get fixed overnight. . . . I'm here for the long haul. And if
it doesn't work out, I'll be the first to tell you why."

Great, the national standard of lowering standards for athletes, has reached
the service academies. The good news is that at least they will be given
early outs and not lowering the fleet standards!

The Navy hockey team lost 5-3 in a non-league game to regional rival Towson University last night.
Navy took the lead 1-0 halfway through the 1st period only to be equaled by Towson before the end of the period.
A penalty-filled 2nd period seemed to change the flow of the game as Towson took a 3-2 lead after outshooting The Midshipmen 22-9.
Towson scored 2 more goals in the third before Navy could close the gap late in the game.
Tonight the team is home against The University of Delaware.
See you at Dahlgren Hall.

Navy played the #6 ranked University of Delaware at Dahlgren Hall in a non-league game on Saturday night.
After a scoreless first period Delaware scored 3 goals before Navy tallied just before the end of the 2nd period.
Navy scored one goal in the third and took the loss 3-2 despite a flurry of action in front of the opponents net during the final minute of play.
Delaware beat the #13 ranked University of Rhode Island team 10-3 on Friday night.
This weekend's games were a good barometer for the team considering they lost by a combined 3 goals to the #6 and #7 ranked teams.
Currently The Midshipmen are #14.
Lookin' Good Guys!

FYI ... I got this yesterday and thought I would pass it along - the photos
are very nice - and they plan to offer photo's of the Yard, Brigade,
Midshipmen Companies, Fly-overs and such at a later date. It might be worth
bookmarking this site if you have a Mid who is in a Varsity sport.

Sunday afternoon Navy won an important league game against Lehigh 3-2.
After a scoreless 1st period Navy took a 1-0 lead into the 3rd. Two goals
early in the period gave the Midshipmen a 3-0 lead but Lehigh refused to
allow Navy to finish them off.

Lehigh pulled their goalie for an extra offensive player with under a minute
remaining and scored a goal to pull within 1 but Navy held on for the win.

Please pray that ice hockey becomes a true varsity sport. Work on the street is that if ice hockey becomes a sport, so will women's lacrosse. They are an outstanding group of athletes with a real lust for the sport. They have a great record this fall...we'd love to see them become varsity....

I had the pleasure of a quick trip to Philadelphia for the Regatta. Over
5,000 rowers competed in this 2.6 mile event on a cloudy, sunny, windy, ever
changing, Fall Saturday.

It was great to see all our mid rowers supported by a wonderful group of
coaches and outstanding local parents.

The link below points to a few pictures of the day.

Enjoy!

Hello Football Parents,

subject: Thanksgiving

We are fortunate to live within driving distance of USNA, so I was wondering if
we will have an opportunity to spend time with our Mid during the 4 day break
when they will remain at the Academy. Of course I asked my Mid first, and he
had heard only rumors.

I sent an email yesterday to one of the secretaries in the football department
asking numerous questions about the schedule for the four days, and if Mids
would have an opportunity to visit with nearby families or sponsors.

She had very little information at this time but she did say,

"YES, Coach Johnson is having regular practice on Thanksgiving Day."

The time is not yet scheduled.

I guess there are many of us who would like to know what is planned.
The latest RUMOR is a dinner in King Hall???
Perhaps the coach has heard this one.

If anyone has information to share now or in the near future, please share it
here. Thank you!

GO NAVY - BEAT ARMY! GO NAVY - BEAT ARMY! GO NAVY - BEAT ARMY!

Judy

on December 7, at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ. America's greatest
football rivalry will be played this year under changed conditions in the
areas of security and stadium access. Please read this information sheet
carefully as it contains key material on a variety of important subjects
that have a direct impact on this year's game.

SECURITY: All fans in attendance will be subject to increased security
measures when entering Giants Stadium. Please plan to arrive earlier than
normal for the game, as enhanced security measures will delay access to the
stadium.

backpacks and fanny packs, coolers, umbrellas, strollers, large camera and
video bags.
PERMITTED ITEMS: Purses smaller than 8" x 11", blankets, seat cushions, and
small hand-held cameras.
RE-ENTRY/PASS-OUTS: Once fans have passed through security areas, re-entry
to Giants Stadium will not be permitted. Once fans exit the stadium, they
may NOT re-enter under any circumstances.

We appreciate your attendance at this year's Army-Navy game and thank you
for you anticipated cooperation and courtesy. BEAT ARMY!!
