Subject: Sprint Football Victory

Before a full grandstand (note the singular), Navy's Sprint Football team
crushed U. Penn tonight, 48-0. The shut-out started with a wobbly first
quarter -- LOTS of turnovers on both sides, but once our boys got their sea
legs under them, and a bit of confidence from some superior playing, there
was really no contest.

As I think I mentioned earlier in the week, the grandstand on the Visitor's
side has been completely removed. We were all worried, as the Army-Navy
N* game next week will be fully attended, by mids, parents AND opposing team
fans. But I have been assured by a VERY high source that USNA has purchased
moveable stands, which will be erected before that very important game, and
which will be used whenever and wherever needed all over the Yard, INCLUDING
on Worden Field for parades.

There were lots of VERY chilly mids in the stands tonight, cheering on their
shipmates. I sat next to a varsity cheerleader who was surrounded by her
squad and companymates. They posted signs and yelled continuously for one
of their buddies. Next to me on the other side were my #1 ranking sponsor
son's mom and grandma, who had baked cookies and handed them out to the
cold, shivering midshipmen who surrounded us. As long as THOSE mids sat in
front of us, next to us, and behind us, they blocked the cold air from
hitting us quite so fast, and we were SOMEWHAT cozy, but they left at the
half to go get warm, and we were rather uncomfortable thereafter.
("Required" dress for plebes and youngsters was either SDB's or Blue &
Golds. VERY few of them remembered to bring their reefers or gloves. These
are open stands on Rip Miller Field, right next to the harbor, and the
breeze comes at you from all sides. BRRRRRRR.)

By the 4th quarter, our 3rd string team was in, playing hard and continuing
to score. "They had no offense," was one of the coach's comments
afterwards, speaking of the U. Penn team. This team was supposed to be our
MOST difficult opponent. We have already beaten Army once, in a non-league
game earlier in the season. Next week COUNTS, for the big STAR.

For those of you who don't know about the Sprint team, it is also known as
"Lightweight Football." All players must weigh in on the Wednesday before
a game, and be 165 pounds OR LESS. (It USED to be 150 lbs, but it's hard
enough to "make weight" at 165, believe me!!) This is NOT the varsity JV
team, but since not many colleges HAVE Lightweight teams, we actually play
some of their JV teams. Sprint IS, however, a varsity sport at USNA, and
therefore when we beat Army, the players who rate a letter get the N-star.

One of the moms had organized a tailgate for after the game.
SUPERtailgate, I should have said. Tables and tables and tables of food.
Long lines of mids. LOTS of parents to help. Grill out front for hot
dogs, chafing dishes for warm pasta concoctions inside. Platters of
shrimps and hot wings. Piles of drinks and desserts. The food evaporated.
MUST HAVE! Where ELSE could that much food have gone? Players, coaches
and girlfriends, roommates, managers and Marines. WHAT a friendly bunch!!
I took lots of pictures.

NEXT WEEK, as I have said, is the Army-Navy game. The crowd will be
bigger. I imagine LOTS of you parents will be coming to town from points
farther away. YOU are welcome at the tailgate, especially if you bring
edible "donations" -- you can park in the lot outside McDonough Hall, which
is where the Sprint team goes back to its locker room after the game. Walk
over to Rip Miller Field from there, but leave your food in the car until
after the game, when we will all be there to help unload each other's cars
and set it out. Bring a bridge table or folding table if you can. I
think we had 8 or 10 tables tonight, and with more food, we'll need more
serving space!

WEAR LAYERS! Bring blankets to sit on. Stadium pads with backs are not
much good, as there are no backs on these bleachers, only benches. Cushions
are not much good either, because when you stand up, they could fall down
under the stands. Sturdy shoes, socks, long underwear -- I had on FIVE
layers tonight and was still a tad cold. Parkas with hoods might be in
order next week. GLOVES and HATS, for certain.

WEAR YOUR RED/WHITE/BLUE ribbons, too, and your state nametags. It is
SOOOOOOOO much fun to pass by, recognize names, and shake/hug/scream in
recognition. I hope to see you there!

Joyce Hoffer, proud Sprint Sponsor Mom

Just thought that those of you who will be going to see the game in
Baltimore next weekend, you will need to know the following...

During the 2001 season, the Baltimore Ravens made changes in their gatem
admission policies. These policies will remain in effect for the 2002
season. As a reminder, the following is a list of items prohibited/allowed
into Ravens Stadium:

No:
Backpacks, tote bags, large purses, fanny packs, grocery-type bags and
plastic bags
Beverages, coolers, bottles (plastic or glass), cans, containers, or
thermoses
Binocular, camera or video camera CASES
Air horns, whistles, laser pointers / pens, umbrellas, flag / banner
poles, weapons or dangerous objects

Banners are permitted provided they are not commercial, political, offensive
or in poor taste. Banners may not obstruct the view of any fans, stadium
signage and/or markings, or present any safety hazard. Banners or flags may
not be attached to a pole.

Anyone arriving with the aforementioned items will be required to return
these items to their car. They cannot be checked at the gate.

The following items will be permitted into the stadium...
Yes: (You will be subject to a search)
Nothing larger than a freezer-sized zip-lock clear bag
Small purses, diaper bags (with a child of appropriate age)
Blankets, tarps, coats/jackets, binoculars, cameras & video cameras
without the cases.

More information can be obtained by going to their web site at...

A much better showing for the Midshipmen today (Sunday).
Navy outplayed Rutgers and came away with an 8-2 victory.
The first period ended with Navy ahead 2-0 and they extended their lead to 4-1 at the end of 2.
Next weekend the team travels to Missouri for a pair of games against 13th ranked St. Louis University.
Go Navy!

Hey, all you Navy Wrestling Fans!

Navy has another win at Sacramento College tonight, posting a 47-0 win. I
didn't get scores, as I was on another call at the time, but the score speaks
for itself! Go Navy!

On another note, if I didn't say so already, my husband (who is in California
on "business" - wrestling business at this point!) said that last night at
Stanford, there were about 1,000 fans, 400 of them NAVY fans. He said it was
just chilling to have them all there, cheering our Mids on. He said he was
sure it was a big boost for the guys, having all those people there cheering
and so into the match. It's really good to know, where they go, there's
always at least one Navy fan, but in this case, many more than that!

Hi...

I haven't seen any postings on the big game yesterday. Thought I'd throw in
my two cents worth.

If you didn't see the game, you missed some good football. I was so proud
of the Navy players and the Brigade in general, that I almost cried! Those
guys played four quarters of football against Notre Dame and held their own.
Nobody expected them to win...nobody expected them to even make a decent
showing...but they had Notre Dame sweating! Not to mention...the oddsmakers
are all hating life as Navy easily beat the 28 point spread!

Although the team seemed disappointed to have not come away with a check in
the "Win" column...they must have gained a TON of confidence in their
ability to play football against the best in the nation.

Beat Army!

I watched the game as well - it was excellent. Our young men can be proud of
what they accomplished. I was pleased to hear the comments made of the
additional training the Navy team must endure as well as their superior
intelligence to most other college football players. Definitely something to
think about - they may not win many games but the commitment, honor,
intelligence and integrity among the Navy players far exceed any other teams
accomplishments!!

Congratulations to both the USNA football and wrestling teams!
On Friday eve, USNA wrestlers beat Stanford and they were absolutely awesome to watch. Then on Saturday morning here on the west coast, we were given the treat of seeing the USNA football team play so, so well against Notre Dame. What a game! How proud we are ALWAYS of all of you!! GO NAVY!

Several USNA families in the Northern California Parents Club and alumni from
the greater Sacrramento area had the privilege of cheering for and then
feeding the wrestling team at Sacramento City College on Saturday. It's been
years since I've been at a meet, so I couldn't quite remember how the scoring
system works. You've already heard that USNA solidly beat Sacramento City
College, in a meet that started at 5 pm. At 7 pm they wrestled against the
University of California Davis, losing by 1 team point. Here are individual
results (if I recorded the scores correctly):

Michael Carbonaro lost 3-5
Luke Lazzo won 8-7
Michael Marikian won 7-6
Thayer Paxton lost 2-9
Jim Letchford won 7-4
Steven Kovach won 3-1
Sam Grey lost 4-8
Matthew Gulosh lost 15-5
Nathan Gulosh won 8-2
Pat Luckinch lost 4-7

Great strength, great sportsmanship, and wonderful individuals. One of the
few times we've had a USNA athletic team compete in our area, and we loved
it!

we flew up from southern California to enjoy the matches at Stanford and
Sacramento City College. Great matches & greater fans. There were graduates
from 1951, 1958 and 2001.....all kinds of navy fans. the coach wanted to
take the fans that were at the Stanford matches back with him to Annapolis as
they were quite loud. then, at Sacramento City College, there were several
navy fans again. The wrestlers were so appreciative of the fans and thanked
us for coming. but I think the best part of the evening for me was watching
the young kids getting posters of the wrestling team and having some of the
wrestlers autograph them. But, again, what a great group of navy support-I
still can't believe how many people were at the matches. Then, the Northern
California parent's club put on a little spread of sandwiches, cookies &
drinks - a lot of support out there in that big Navy Family!

So you caught the fever last week watching the national broadcast
Notre Dame heartbreaker AND your Navy/Army tickets just arrived
in the mail! Break out the snacks and bring on the tomorrow's
UConn game! But wait ...

Unless your local to Anne Arundel county or Hartford CT, your
only option to see the game this week is finding a local sports
pub receiving DirecTV and doing so in High Definition -or-
a neighbor/friend with same -or- even your local consumer
electronics store. It just could be worth the extra effort!

The detail in High Definition is incredible, with an almost "you
are there" feeling. Finding Waldo takes on a whole new meaning.
HDNet also tends to rebroadcast the games later in the week.

This from the NavySports website:

Navy will take on the Connecticut Huskies Saturday on Senior Day
at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. Kickoff is set for 12:06 p.m.
and the game will be televised by two different stations.

HDNet TV will televise the game with Pete Medhurst calling the
play-by-play and former Navy fullback Omar Nelson ('97) handling
the color commentary. HDNet television is available on DirecTV
on Channel 199, but you must have a high definition television
to view that channel. HDNet programming is also available at
participating restaurants and bars and other public viewing
locations throughout the United States. For locations showing
HDTV go to: http://www.hd.net/sportsbars.html

Saturday's game will also be shown on a taped delay basis on
Comcast Channel 8 in Anne Arundel County Sunday at 12 noon. You
do not need a high definition television to watch the taped
delayed broadcast.

WFSB TV-3 in Hartford, Conn., will also televise the game
live with Joe Tessitore, Don McPherson and Eric Clemons calling
the action.

Go Navy!

You can check out your seating assignments at: <A HREF="http://www.meadowlands.com/stadium/seating">
http://www.meadowlands.com/stadium/seating</A>

Last year somehow our tickets were in the 12th row on the 50 yard line! Our
younger son even got to pat President Bush on the back - it was quite a
thrill for us all! This year our tickets are in the end zone upper deck.
Both times I faxed the order in at 9 a.m. on the first day of ticket sales.
Go figure! However, anywhere in the stadium will be great.

The Navy hockey team finished a home-and-home series with Towson on something of a high note.
Saturday evening at Towson's home ice in Baltimore the midshipman hung tough through 2 periods but couldn't keep up with the Tigers in the third.
Trailing just 2-1 after 2 Towson outscored Navy 6-1 in the final period to record an 8-2 victory.
Sunday afternoon provided a different feeling at Dahlgren Hall.
Starting his first game in goal, Matthew Collinsworth recorded 43 saves as Navy battled to a 3-3 tie.
I apologize for not having the goal scoring information but I think if you check out the Navy Hockey website in a day or two you might find the stats.
http://www.nadn.navy.mil/Hockey/
Overtime was a real nail-biter as both teams, playing at 4 a side and then 3-on-3 for the final 1:58, had some good opportunities in front of the net.

Our tickets arrived yesterday.
Ditto to Mary's comments about seating.
Last year we were on about the 35 yd line, 10 rows up with some great Navy
fans; had a good time cheering on our team.
I'm one of those rabid fans who gets in to the game, cheers with the
cheerleaders and all. (No, I played basketball in my former life BM-Before
Motherhood, though I did do a stint as a Gator getter, but that is another
story.)
This year, I called on Day 1, like before. We're on the 50 yd line, in the
upper deck; oxygen deprivation comes to mind.
Like Mary said - Go figure...Yet we will be in the stadium, waving at the
pilots during the flyby, and taking close up pictures of the parachute
jumpers for the Parents-net.
The parking pass is a nice touch, and we can view the NYC skyline.
Maybe I can borrow high altitude gear and O2 from someone on the yard.
If your travel plans are flexible, Navy Men's basketball is at home against
Johns Hopkins on 4 December, and the Women will be home against Jacksonville
on 8 December. Hope I get better seats in Alumni Hall than in NJ.
GO NAVY!

Fair winds and following seas!

I have the most wonderful wife. She surprised me with a birthday gift of a
trip complete with everything for the BIG game plus airline. Never having
been to NYC and not knowing anything about the city, we made reservations
near LaGuardia Airport, where we will be arriving. Can anyone share
information on the best way to get to the Meadowlands for the game? How
long it may take? Any, and all information will be appreciated. My wife is
not a sports fan, so my brother and I will be attending our first Army-Navy
game on our first visit to the "Big Apple".

Hello all,

I've lived in Hudson County all my life (right across from NYC) and you have
several choices in traveling to Manhattan. First, of course, is driving
which is not recommended for the faint of heart - NYC cabbies are notorious
for inventing traffic lanes where none exist.

But if you want to drive, it's easy from the Meadowlands (Giant Stadium).
Take 3 east to 595 East to Holland tunnel. The tunnel will put you in
downtown Manhattan - go North a little bit for the Village or travel further
north for midtown and uptown where all of the Broadway shows are (and
Rockefeller Center and central Park and museums, etc). If you want to see
the WTC, take the ramp toward DOWNTOWN/BROOKLYN after leaving the tunnel,
turn slight left onto Beach Street. Beach Street becomes Walker Street. Turn
Left onto Church Street and stay on Church until you come close to the site.

There are three main ways to commute: by bus, Path train, or by passenger
ferry (no cars). I'd recommend the ferry - there's two - one from Hoboken
and one from Weehawkin and they run until ~ 1 am. Weehawkin has the best
parking and Hoboken the worst (they ticket & tow or boot your car if
illegally parked). It'll be a little cold but it offers a very scenic view
of the NYC skyline. To get to the Weehawkin ferry, take Route 3 East to 495
East. Exit at Weehawken (last exit in NJ). At the traffic light, keep right
of ramp and continue through traffic light, bear right. At the light
(Baldwin Avenue) near the Lincoln Tunnel make a left. Proceed over train
tracks and make an immediate left. Follow road to ferry terminal. Ferry
travels between Port Imperial in Weehawken, NJ and West 38th Street in
Midtown Manhattan. Connecting shuttle bus service is available in Manhattan
to various locations.

I'm not a bus person but there are park and rides for NJ transit and here's
their website: http://www.njtransit.com/sf_bus.shtm (they also have ferry
and Path train information).

For the Path train, you can park in Hoboken (good luck) or Jersey City at
Exchange Place. Although it has more parking, I'd forget Exchange Place
unless you're really adventuresome. Both take you to 33rd Street in
Manhattan. For Hoboken, take Route 3 East to 495 East. Exit at Weehawken
(last exit in NJ). At the traffic light, keep right of ramp and continue
through traffic light, bear right. Turn slight right onto JF Kennedy BLVD E
which becomes Park Ave. Take Park Avenue for ~ 1/2 mile (past a few traffic
lights) until you hit 14th street. Make left on 14th street, go 2 - 3 blocks
and make right onto Washington. Take Washington to First Street and make a
left. Path is ~ 1/2 block on your right - good luck parking. I'd recommend
taking a left on River Street (opposite Path) and travel till you find a
parking spot. There are also parking garages on River street 3 - 4 blocks
on you left.

As far as seeing the city in a day, I'd recommend midtown where there are a
lot of activities and good restaurants. If you have to walk more than a few
blocks, I'd recommend a taxi instead of NY subways or buses. The city can be
cold so dress appropriately. Have fun!

Beat Army!

>From the LaGuardia Airport area, the best way to get to the Meadowlands
is to rent a car and drive. The staff at your hotel and/or the car
rental company could most likely provide you with a map. Public
transportation is available but it would mean traveling to the Port
Authority Bus Terminal in Manhattan (via cab or bus) and then taking a
bus to the Meadowlands in NJ. Early on a Saturday morning, (I'm sure
you'd want to get there in plenty of time for the march-on) you should be
able to get to the Meadowlands from LaGuardia Airport in about 30-45
minutes. Going via public transportation could easily take twice as
long. Good luck and I hope you enjoy your stay in the Big Apple! GO

Mrs. Collinsworth was being modest by not mentioning that her son Matthew
played an outstanding game in goal for Navy in last night's game.
Today was a repeat performance by the sophomore from Virginia.
In Sunday's game at Dahlgren Hall, Navy battled to a 2-1 victory over
Duquesne, avenging an early season loss to The Dukes.
Scoreless after the first two periods, Duquesne scored a power-play goal to
take a short-lived lead. Navy evened the match less than a minute later and
took the lead for good with a few minutes left in the game. Navy's defense
held on in the end after Duquesne had pulled their goalie for an extra
attacker.
Stellar defensive play in the last three games have allowed the Midshipman
to go 2-0-1 and put a little distance between themselves and the rest of the
pack that will battle for one of the top six spots needed to qualify for the
playoffs.

The fine print on the back of the ticks appears to have been written just
for the Army x Navy game because it includes references to USNA and USMA..

It contains a list of prohited items, which could be used as projectiles,
but it doesn't mention video cameras.

Hello All,

I also noticed Video Cameras were listed as a forbidden item in the flyers
that were in the envelope with the ticks. I contacted Jill Montone who is
the Parents Club Coordinator at the Alumni Assoc. concerning the "Video
Camera" issue to see why video cameras were a security issue at the A/N
game. She forwarded my question to Navy Security office and they replied
that they (USNA) were following the guidelines from the Meadowlands.

One of the parents in our club was not even permitted to bring his "digital"
camera into the game last year. The security personnel at the gate he
entered considered it a "recording device" yet I had not heard of anyone
else having a similar problem and I had taken my own digital camera into the
game last year.

I guess that as long as you have a plan to deal with your camcorder when
they say no, it's worth a try, but don't be suprised if you have to either
stick it in the trash can or take it back to the car and miss part of the
game....

It is a shame that we parents can't have recorded memories of our sons and
daughters deeds, but the bright side is that we'll see so much more of what
is going on if our eyes aren't stuck to a tiny viewfinder.

Se you all at the game.

Hi,

I am posting this to the sports network, but it may be relevant for wider
distribution.

I'm willing to bet the reason for no video cameras for the Dec 7th game is
because it is televised. When Navy played at SMU, video cameras were not
allowed because someone owned the television rights, even though the game
may not have been televised. We had to show them every camera at the gate
(all 5 of them) at the SMU game to prove we had no video equipment. It
would have been a potential infringement on copyright to have a video of the
game without the express permission of the owner of the video rights. Some
digital cameras can double as or have limited video capacity - hence some
guards may be stricter about letting in digital cameras.

Hope this helps and hope everyone is having a happy and safe holiday
weekend.
