Can someone please tell me what hotels are available in the surrounding area
for the Big Game!? I need a room for Fri and Sat. night.

Does anyone know where the Mids are staying? I understand they are staying
in New York on Sat. night.

Thanks

I can't thank everyone enough for all the responses about finding a hotel
room at the last minute for the Biggest game of the year! I have booked a
room thanks to the kindness of one of our fellow netters.
I really don't know what I would do without this great means of
communication!

Thanks to everyone!

Tuesday evening the Navy hockey team beat Villanova 4-3 in overtime.
The Midshipmen dominated most of the game but could not pull away from The Wildcats.
Team Captain Jon Martha scored the game-winner with less than 2 minutes remaining in overtime. The play was made possible by the hard work of Kacey Kemmerer who assisted on the goal.
Goalie Matthew Collinsworth remains unbeaten at 3-0-1.

Go Navy, Beat Army!

I don't know if everyone can access it, but the main sports page on AOL has a
very good article about the Army-Navy rivalry, the character of the players
and students and why it's the BEST college rivalry! Glad to see The Big Game
get the attention it deserves!!!

Friends,

Two fine stories in The Star-Ledger, New Jersey's daily paper, about our
favorite topic this week. One from Pete Dawkins, giving his perspective
for Army:

http://www.nj.com/search/index.ssf?/base/sports-1/103907318274520.xml?starledger

and one from Roger Staubach:

http://www.nj.com/search/index.ssf?/base/sports-1/103907319074520.xml?starledger

Both focus on the tradition and what sets this game apart from others.
Very special!

On a related note, did anyone else notice the picture of Bill Clinton
playing football at Oxford University that appeared in the December 9
issue of Time, p. 104? He's clearly wearing USNA issue warm-ups!

Bring all your warmest gear for the game on Saturday. It's snowing here
today and promises to be sunny by game time but will surely be VERY
chilly. Oooorah! Our spirit will surely keep us warm!

Safe travels to those who are coming from far afield to join us for the
big event. Those of you who cannot be with us - lay in some extra hot
chocolate and toddies. When my toes are frozen and I can't feel the end
of my nose I want to know that YOU are really partying on our behalf!

Go Navy! Beat Army! Go Navy! Beat Army! Go Navy! Beat Army!

Both the men and women's swim teams beat Army yesterday at West Point,
by very comfortable margins.

Can anyone tell me if parking passes will be required to park at the

the tlckets.

The parking passes are only a preepayment of the $15
parking. You can hand them $15 just as well as a pass.

Sandi mentioned pictures of the basketball game. I haven't looked at them
yet, but I hope they include some shots of the mascots that have been
attending.

We've been lucky enough to have attended 4 home games this year and have
enjoyed the ever increasing stretch to our collective midshipmen's
imaginations.

There is a contest to find the company with the most spirit at home
basketball games. The winning group gets a large screen TV for their
wardroom as well as some other pretty nice items (I think a DVD player,
etc...). The big screen TV is on display at each game to remind the Mids of
the stakes.

The companies that have left the biggest impression on me so far are 1st,
3rd, 6th, and 26th.

Apparently several of the Varsity Mens team belong to 1st company, and they
are there cheering them on at each game with a banner proudly displayed.
They sit in the corner of the arena closest to the home bench and raise quite
a ruckus especially when their company mates are in the game.

At the Johns Hopkins game the other night a large contingent of Mids with
camouflage paint and in cammies came in carrying a huge banner with "3rd
COMPANY" in bright neon yellow lettering. They had made a large U out of PVC
pipe and attached the sign which they were able to prop in the stands during
the game. The group split with some at each end of the court cheering on the
team and trying to disrupt any free throws attempted by JHU.

26th company is a pretty ambitious group. They always bring a good number of
bodies and they always wear their company T-shirts, black with what looks to
be a red Texas longhorn on the chest. Their most prominent member the other
night was a good sized Mid dressed in a gorilla suit sporting the company
T-shirt. He danced around the arena on the upper level and even came down to
our level to boogie with the music during a break. The audience, of course,
showed our appreciation for his dancing skill with a nice round of applause.
I think even the Supe was laughing.

But the company that wins hands down in my mind up to now is 6th. They are
very well organized bringing noise makers and pom poms to every game, and
their banner that reads "The 6th man". They sit right behind the basket
closest to the home bench and are quite loud. Several games ago, they had a
Superman with them who was in costume but instead of the S on his chest,
there was a 6. At the JHU game, they expanded their repertoire and brought
Superman (with an S) and Batman, along with some character with a hooded mask
that looked like he belonged in the WWF. They raced around the arena chasing
each other, chasing 26th's gorilla, and just having a great time. Wish I
could say the basketball went as well as the off-court antics. Plenty of
season left though.

One last bit that we thought was very inventive. Arriving at the game the
night before Thanksgiving, there were very few Mids in attendance. Obviously
everyone had headed out for the holiday. BUT there was a huge sign hanging
from the front row railing behind the basket. It had the xeroxed 8x10
pictures of what I assumed was 6th company with lettering across the top that
said "Here in spirit!" I was impressed with their forethought. Some of the
staff took a few pictures of it, I assume to use when the judging takes place
in the spirit contest.

The award, by the way, will be presented at the Army/Navy basketball game at
the end of the season. I'm looking forward to see what they come up with
next. Anything's possible!

Thanks to all the eyewitness accounts of the festivities, passion and pride
of yesterday's game! I was disappointed with CBS's lack of coverage of the
march-ons. I distinctly remember last year's telecast, which showed the
about-face of the Brigade and the tipping of the covers. Another show of
respect for the opponent, soon to be their comrades in arms.

We live in a rural area of Los Angeles County, with "tract" homes, but with
2-4 acres, and zoned for horses, etc. We have 2 horses and my mid-son's pet
nubian/alpine goat in our backyard (I have to add that the goat WOULD NOT
have let himself be "stolen" by strangers without a fight, but I'm also sure
he would not like to re-locate to the cold Annapolis winters!) Neighbors
behind us have 2 mules. The mules are usually quite animated, braying and
kicking the stalls. BUT TODAY......they are standing quietly, hanging their
heads! Our goat is a very happy guy today....Maybe it's my imagination, but
do you think the animals know what happened in the Meadowlands yesterday?????

Congratulations to the Football Team!! They have worked hard this season to
turn the program around, and I have great hopes for their continued success
in 2003.

As most of you know by now, Army Navy Tickets for the 2003 Game to be held
in Philadelphia will go on sale according to a very strict schedule
beginning on or about 1 MAR 03. While we do not have the exact information
and dates for 2003 at this time, we know from experience that an IMPORTANT
DEADLINE is approaching.

A/N Tickets are sold to individuals of the following groups in this EXACT
order....
(Dates Approximate for 2003)

March 1st - Previous Year Season Ticket Holders (ONE Ticket per
Season Ticket)
April 15th - Naval Academy Athletic Ass'n Members (Limit SIX per
member)
April 29th - USNA Midshipmen (Limit FOUR per Midshipman)
May 6th - USNA Graduates & Faculty/Staff (Limit TWO per individual)
July 1st - Additional Sales to Above Groups if available.

As you can see, after Previous Season Ticket Holders, the next available
seats are issued to MEMBERS OF NAAA !!!

BUT... YOU MUST BE A MEMBER AS OF DECEMBER 31, 2002 in order to qualify.
You can't join next Spring and still be eligible. While you aren't
guaranteed better A/N seats, you may want to invest in an NAAA membership in
order to reserve the ability to purchase additional tickets before all the
really acceptable seats are gone.

Remember, Philly Stadium is smaller than Giant's Stadium and there will be
fewer tickets available. Especially, fewer good seats.

So don't say we didn't warn you. You have two weeks to join the Naval
Academy Athletic Association before the deadline passes and you have to wait
for your Mid to buy you A/N Tickets.

Most of those who attend, buy tickets as either Season Ticket Holders or
NAAA members. We know that most Alumni, Faculty and Staff who attend the
game buy as members of these groups, so most of the choice seats are already
sold, long before the Mids buy tickets. After all, Mids have reserved seats
and don't need tickets, so they really are last to buy A/N tickets.

For current NAAA membership information, please contact the Membership
Coordinator at the Navy Ticket Office at 800-874-6289.

MCCALLUM INDUCTED INTO THE COLLEGE FOOTBALL HALL OF FAME

Annapolis, MD-Former Naval Academy running back Napoleon McCallum (1981-85)
was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame, in ceremonies held Dec.
10 at the Waldorf Astoria in New York City. McCallum will be enshrined into
the Hall of Fame in South Bend, Ind., in August of 2003.
"What a great honor this is," said McCallum. "I feel so blessed to have
teammates that supported me enough to make this happen. I did not do this by
myself. This honor is a reflection of my teammates, and they made it all
happen for me. I am really excited."
McCallum is the 20th Naval Academy football player to be inducted into
the Hall of Fame and is only the sixth who played for Navy since 1950,
joining such luminaries as Steve Eisenhauer (1952-53), Ron Beagle (1953-55),
Bob Reifsnyder (1956-57), Joe Bellino (1958-60) and Roger Staubach (1962-64).
When it came to all-around performances on the football field, McCallum
ranks among the best ever in NCAA history. It was not only the rushing
yardage he accumulated, but the returned punts and kickoffs and his
performance as a pass receiver. His 7,172 all-purpose yards ranks second in
NCAA history.
McCallum set 26 school records in his tenure, including the career
rushing mark, single-season rushing yardage, career kickoff return, career
punt return yardage and most 100-yard games in a career.
In 1983, McCallum earned consensus All-America first-team honors as
running back and was the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division
I-A Co-Player of the Year with Boston College's Doug Flutie. He led the
nation in all-purpose running, with an average of 216.8 yards per game,
setting a NCAA record. He also finished third in the country in rushing with
an average of 144.3 yards per contest.
But in 1984, McCallum played in only two games before suffering a
season-ending broken ankle in the fourth quarter of the second game of the
season. McCallum was granted an additional year of eligibility because of
the injury.
In the 1985 season, he again led the country in all-purpose running
(211.8 yards per game) and was seventh in rushing (120.6), 10th in kickoff
returns (24.4) and 14th in scoring (8.2). Again a First-Team All-America, he
was Most Valuable Offensive Player for the Gray squad in the annual Blue-Gray
Game and Most Valuable Player in the Senior Bowl.
In 1986, McCallum was assigned to the USS PELELIU and was able to
complete his military duties in time to practice and play with the Los
Angeles Raiders that fall. He was second on the team, and second among AFC
rookies with 536 yards on 142 carries.
Because of a change in his military assignment, he was unable to play for
the next three seasons. He was traded to the San Diego Chargers who placed
him on the Military Reserve list. He rejoined the Raiders in 1990, seeing
limited action.
After seeing limited action again in 1991, he was cut in 1992, but
resigned a month later. In 1993, he was again on Raider special teams and saw
some time in short-yardage situations. Late in the season, injuries moved
McCallum into the Raider lineup and he responded with a three-touchdown
outburst in a 42-24 win over the Denver Broncos in an AFC wild card playoff
game. He scored two more touchdowns the next week against the Buffalo Bills
in the AFC Championship game.
However, in the first game of the 1994 season on Monday Night Football,
McCallum suffered a severe injury to his left knee that required three
surgeries and effectively ended his professional football career.
McCallum, who was inducted into the Blue-Gray All-Star Football Classic
Hall of Fame in 1995, is CEO and President of Digital Pro Graphics, a
business specializing in the production of large full-color images such as
billboards, banners, promotional signs and the like. The company is located
in Las Vegas, Nev.
