Hello to all,

Just got back from the Blue and Gold football scrimmage and took a ton of
pix. I have about 10 shots of the Offensive Line!! For some reason, that
group looked inviting!! Anyway, besides a handsome number 70, there are
many other handsome guys in those pictures. If any of you have someone in
that group, I am assuming that they all were there, e-mail me their jersey
number and send me your address and I will be only too happy to send along
a copy of those good-looking lugs!!

The game was fun but a bit wet. Sunday was a beautiful day!! All the
flowers on the Yard were just stretching tall to get some of that beautiful
sun. Oh, man, it was pretty. After we dropped off our son, we just walked
around the whole Yard, listening and looking. The tulips don't grow nearly
that tall in California!

Have a good weekend!

Go Navy
Ginger

Subject: photos Division II Rugby @ San Antonio 4/29/03

The setting was San Antonio on April 29, 2003.

I was fortunate enough to attend this year's final Rugby match of the
Division II Rugby Team (3rd class and Plebes). The match was a round robin
tourney held in San Antonio, Texas between the Div II teams from the Air
Force Academy, Military Academy, and the Naval Academy. The South Texas
Parents' clubs for all three academies joined forces to "host" the event.
What a spread! A hearty Bravo Zulu to all who helped put it on.
Impressive!

Unfortunately, the USNA team placed third in the tourney, but they had a
good shot. Had they won the last game against the Black Knights, they would
have won the game. The Midshipmen lost the first game against the
Falcons -- but barely. The game was tied at the end of regulation, then
tied again after the first full overtime, then it went into sudden victory.
The Falcons won with a drop kick field goal 3 points. Hard fought, and well
played.

The second match of the day was between Air Force and West Point. Navy
found itself in the odd position of cheering for West Point! Boy did that
feel odd! West point did win at the very end. This set up the
championship. If the Midshipmen could beat West Point by a larger margin
than the Black Nights had beaten the Air Force... But, it was not to be.

The "sevens" also played. Unfortunately, I do not have the scores, but as I
recall, they won.

I did learn one key item from the Navy Parents club: borrow the tenting
from a funeral home. It was very easily set up and the price was right!

Enjoy the photos.

My son is in the class of 07. He's been a Varsity baseball player--4 year
letter--as a pitcher. Will he get an opportunity to try out for the Naval
Academy team? If so, when would the tryouts start? Is there anything he can do
prior to reporting to the Academy to help him get the opportunity for a
tryout, i.e. letter from his baseball coach, send a video, etc? Our plan was
to bring his glove, etc., when we come up for PPW. Would that be a good time
to do so? Also he was told the Academy had a "Freshman" team that some
prospective Varsity players are placed on to better prepare them for Division
I competition. Is this true?

Thank you in advance for your time in answering these questions

My son wants to walk-on to play soccer at USNA. Son played premier level soccer until he broke his ankle in May 2002 and hebs almost at pre-injury level. Many of his former premier level teammates will be playing Division I level soccer at some top 25 teams. I'm hoping someone can give us some guidance.

Should my son contact the coach and fill out the forms the coach sent him in the Fall so that the coach can establish an athletic file for him?

Is there a freshman team?

During Plebe summer, is there free time to practice or play pick-up soccer?

First game for USNA against W&M is August 22, 2003? When do walk-on candidates tryout?

Thanks for the help.

Thanks for all that have replied to my inquiry. Taking the suggestions of several folks, I did contact the coaches (and will have my son contact them directly at the first opportunity he gets) and got in touch with coach Miranda. He indicated that the coaching staff uses the intramural period (4pm to 6pm) during Plebe Summer to look at potential players alongside the recruited players and that this extended look really gives walk-ons the benefit of an in-depth review. Coach Miranda actually knew about my son's former travel team and his coach, as son played in the nearby NCSL travel league and his former coach was Maryland's ODP Coach for '85 two season's ago.

For the benefit of others who might also be in this same situation, I asked if one could play intramural and play drum and bugle -- Coach said, as I suspected, that the conflict cannot be adjusted; it's one or the other.

Sorry I forgot my USNA net-etiquette and didn't sign last time.
