United States Naval Academy Foundation Receives 10 Dollar Million Gift

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Annapolis, Md. (August 7, 2003) - The United States Naval Academy Campaign:

Leaders to Serve the Nation has received a 10 Million Dollar gift from Mr.
Jackson T. Stephens of Little Rock, Arkansas. Mr. Stephens is a 1947
graduate of the Naval Academy and Chairman of Stephens Group, Inc. His
gift, announced today by the United States Naval Academy Foundation, will
support the ongoing renovations of Navy Marine Corps Memorial Stadium, the
Class of 1947 Legacy project to benefit the Academy's Museum, and other
important Campaign priorities. The field at Navy Marine Corps Memorial
Stadium will be named "Jack Stephens Field" in honor of the donor.

"The Leaders to Serve the Nation Campaign has attracted the involvement of
alumni and friends of the Academy who are leading by example, with their
time, talent, and resources," said George P. Watt, Jr., President and CEO of
the United States Naval Academy Alumni Association and Foundation. "Jack
Stephens is such a leader. His gift provides an incredible enhancement to
the Campaign and for stadium fundraising, but the job is not done. We need
others to follow his lead as we press to complete the stadium and other
Campaign priorities."

Roger Staubach, Co-Chair of the Campaign and a 1963 Heisman Trophy winner
from Navy, noted his appreciation for the gift, "Jack Stephens' gift is
truly transformational. He has helped make it possible to transform Navy
Marine Corps Memorial Stadium to a state-of-the-art facility. I wish I
could play on Jack Stephens Field!"

Mr. Stephens expressed pride in being able to help his alma mater. "It is
an honor to be able to support the Campaign and to give back to and
institution that has given me and our nation so much. The Naval Academy
played an important role in my life. Some of my closest friends and the men
I hold in highest esteem are my Naval Academy classmates."

Stadium renovations are now in high gear to complete the next phase before
the academy's football season starts (August 30). Chet Gladchuk, the
Athletic Director at the Naval Academy embodies the newfound optimism
surrounding the stadium, "You can feel the excitement among the athletes,
coaches, staff, the teams that will play here, and midshipmen in general.
This stadium is going to be something really special for the Naval Academy,
Annapolis and all our fans within the Division IA football ranks. It will
be a great place to play and to watch a game while reflecting on the
wonderful traditions and history of the Academy and Naval Service."

Vice Admiral Rodney P. Rempt, Superintendent, expressed the gratitude of
the Naval Academy for this gift to the Naval Academy Foundation, "Jack
Stephens is honoring in a significant way the men and women who served, and
continue serving, our Navy and Marine Corps. Navy Marine Corps Memorial
Stadium embodies the link between those who have sailed in harm's way, and
those who will one day be called to do so in defense of our great nation.
Midshipmen past, present and future look forward to the dedication of Jack
Stephens Field."

The United States Naval Academy Leaders to Serve the Nation Campaign seeks
$175 million over a six-year period for strategic priorities in admissions,
academics, leadership, character and athletics. The Campaign is scheduled
to run through December 31, 2005.

For all USNA Sports fans,

Our USNA-Sports list is a helpful way for you to offer information and ask
questions about Navy Sports. However, if you are looking for a way to get
as much Navy Sports news as possible, you have another option. It is The
Navy Sports E-Mail list - sponsored by the USNA Athletic Association. It is
a "broadcast only" list - meaning it is a service that sends out emails for
you to read, but you cannot post.

If you join this service, you will receive all the latest on the Naval
Academy's 30 varsity sports programs, including preview stories, postgame
stories and current newspaper articles. This list is available to anyone so
feel free to forward this e-mail on to friends and family. Don't confuse
this list with our USNA-Sports list which a Q&A style list like all of our
other USNA-Net lists. This is a separate mailing list and is administered
separately by the USNA AA. You do not need to be a member of USNA-Net to
receive email from The Navy Sports E-Mail list.

If you would like to join the Navy Sports E-mail list, all you need to do is
send an e-mail to:

sstrasem@usna.edu

(write "S U B S C R I B E to Navy Sports Email list" in the subject of
the email)

You will receive confirmation of your registration by return email. If you
are already on this list, you do not need to join again.

A word of warning, on some days you will receive many emails from this list
(there are a lot of emails generated during football season, for example -
sometimes as many as 10 per day). On other days (like during the summer)
there will be no emails. But, it's a fun and interesting service to belong
to. I have enjoyed receiving these Navy Sports emails for several years.

Having no luck with my net search. If anyone in the closer proximity to the game
hears what it is and/or was please post it.

William and Mary defeated Navy 2-0. Considering W&M are ranked in the top
25 teams in the nation I would say making a competitive run was a solid start
to this soccer season!

My mid called the score into us late last night (actually early morning - 1
a.m. Central Time) and sounded positive about the team and their potential this
year.

Go Navy!

Melinda, Kathy and Brian,

Thanks so much for the date. I looked all over and couldn't find it
anywhere.
It was so much fun last year that I wanted my mom and my sister and her
family to come also.

Kathy

The only football game I have ever watched in my whole life was last year
Army/Navy. So please don't roll your eyes when I ask, "who won?" If Navy
was ahead when they called the game, did they win or do they rematch or
do call it a draw? I KNOW, I KNOW a lot of you experts on the game are
snickering and maybe downright rolling on the floor at this question but
if some one would take pity on this poor soul and answer on the net I'd
be grateful. I don't dare ask my mid on this one as she would laugh and
not give me an answer just to make me go look it up.

Navy Won!
Navy 37 / VMI 10

            Navy 37, Virginia Military 10

            August 30, 2003
ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- Craig Candeto and Navy's seniors finally
won a home game.

Kyle Eckel ran for two touchdowns and a career-high 129 yards as
Navy snapped a 14-game home losing streak with a 37-10 win over Virginia
Military Institute on Saturday.

The game was delayed by lightning for 58 minutes late in the
third quarter. Referee Jim Knight halted play with 54 seconds left in the
period and the game resumed nearly an hour later.

Candeto ran for 96 yards and scored twice for Navy. The
Midshipmen had not won at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium since beating
Tulane 45-21 on Nov. 13, 1999.

``It feels great,'' Candeto said. ``(Losing) wears on you
big-time. You come out each week and don't have success in football games.
Trying to come out hard in practice gets tough every week.''

The Midshipmen gained 598 yards of total offense, including 370
yards on the ground.

``I'm happy to have a win, proud of the effort,'' second-year
Navy coach Paul Johnson said. ``We made a lot of mistakes and there's a lot
of room for improvement. But that usually happens in first games.''

Gary Price scored a touchdown for VMI. The Division I-AA Keydets
have not beaten a I-A opponent since defeating Virginia Tech 6-0 in 1981.

``We were playing with a new quarterback and we never got going
on offense,'' VMI coach Cal McCombs said. ``When you play a team like them,
you have to make some first downs and stay on the field. We didn't.''

The Midshipmen, who have won consecutive season openers under
Johnson, took a 7-0 lead on an 18-yard touchdown run by Tony Lane midway
through the first quarter. Navy then scored on three successive
second-quarter possessions for a 28-0 halftime lead.

Eckel ran 3 yards off left tackle on the first play of the
second quarter, extending the lead to 14-0. After VMI was forced to punt,
Candeto needed only 1:50 to direct a six-play, 70-yard drive that ended with
a 2-yard run by Eckel.

On the next Navy series, Candeto threw a 47-yard completion to
Jason Tomlinson and a pass interference penalty on VMI cornerback Sean Hill
in the end zone put the ball at the Keydet 2.

One play later, Candeto scored on a 3-yard keeper, making it
28-0.

VMI's Mike Maleski recovered a fumbled punt early in the second
half and Price scored on a 6-yard run, falling backward over the goal line
in the third quarter.

After the delay, Matt Sharpe kicked a 46-yard field goal early
in the fourth. Navy responded with a 70-yard drive capped off by Candeto's
2-yard touchdown run, and a 42-yard field goal by Geoff Blumenfeld.

I have finally figured out how to listen to WNAV on the internet - mastered
it yesterday, sort of, and listened to the VMI song. From the distance it
sounded like the hymn commonly referred to as doxology. It has different
words in different congregations, but was wondering if I heard correctly.
It is a beautiful melody and one that is perfect for twilight or after a
storm. The win and conclusion was emotional even from 1500 miles away. I
know there were some mighty happy mids, staff and alum around the world.
