Last night, the Drum and Bugle Corps of Air Force and Navy met at
Navy/Marine Corps Stadium in competition. As I had never seen it before,
and my sponsor son from Texas plays the bugle, I went to watch. Luckily for
me, an experienced D & B Mom sat nearby and could explain what I was seeing.
Judges are on the ground, with small tape recorders in hand, to watch the
footwork and listen to the notes and beats. Judges are high up above, to
note the precision, the flow of formations and patterns. Each team played
three pieces. AF added its familiar "Off we go, into the wild blue yonder."
Air Force won the High Percussion and High Horns awards, and beat us out by
a mere 2 points, plus a couple hundredths. We turned the tables on them
today, though!

It sprinkled a few drops as I left home this morning and a few drops as I
was dropped off this evening. Otherwise, this was the PERFECT day for a
football game!! We two sponsor moms chatted about our various mids, past
and present, as we found a new way to Fed Ex Field. We arrived in plenty
of time to meet the sister and grandpa of a very special plebe I know, to
grab a hotdog, establish a meeting place for afterwards, and find our seats
before the march-on. The pro stadium was more than half empty, but those in
attendance made their presence known!! A perfect flyover began the perfect
game.

USUALLY, I take pictures at Navy functions. Well, I did that too, but
today I took NOTES!! I was sitting next to 75 year old Connie and her
husband Paul, of like vintage. Connie is "A PIECE OF WORK," as one of my
ensigns likes to say!! Connie and Paul receive seasontickets to Navy
football games as an annual Christmas present from their daughter and
son-in-law. Connie is the grandstand coach, if ever there was one, and all
our "neighbors" got a big kick out of her yelling, "NOT THAT PLAY AGAIN!"
She continued, as our team was near the goal line with "TAKE IT OVER THE
TOP!!" And when they did, she turned to me and commented, "They're finally
listening to me!"

I'm sure they could hear Connie clear to the middle of the field, and
possibly to the other side of the stands. They could see her too!! At one
point, the stadium TV cameraman on the field was focusing close-up on fans
in the first few rows. A boy in the front row, with blue and gold stripes
painted on his face, saw himself on the big screen, reached down and pulled
up a poster: "FALCON: THE OTHER WHITE MEAT." He had drawn a picture of a
Thanksgiving turkey on a platter at the bottom!! (When I met him outside
the stadium after the game, he held it up so I could take his picture.) Not
to be outdone, Connie stood up, pulled back her jacket, stuck out her chest
ith the sweatshirt that read NAVAL ACADEMY MIDSHIPMEN and proceeded to do a
"hoochy-koochy" shimmy onscreen. Everyone around us cheered. (Not sure if
that was on the national broadcast. If so, you saw my hand waving at the
right edge.)

Somewhere about the end of the 3rd quarter, an AF fan two rows behind us
caught Connie's eye, leaned down and asked, "Where did you rent that team
from?" I got the idea that lady had come prepared to win big time!!

One of the Navy players had a broken left hand, and wore what looked like
a sack covering it. He played a GREAT game!! Connie turned to her husband
and asked, "What's that thing on his hand? Is he the catcher?" Paul has a
sly sense of humor, and came right back with: "He's not the catcher, he's
the puncher." Connie turned to those of us sitting around her and quipped,
" I may not know much about football, but I KNOW there's no such thing as a
puncher!"

We were in the 3rd row on the 30 Yard Line, behind the AF bench. AF
AND Navy played their hearts out. One of the best football games I have
EVER seen!! It was the first time we beat AF since 1985, so you can imagine
how happy the mids were!! That was the best thing of all -- they were
cheering, yelling, waving. Not a single one was just STANDING. They were
jumping up and down, all together, so we could see the waves of happiness.
Morale was at an all-time high. The Supe and the Dant were either on the
field or in the stands for the entire game. At one point, the mids
chanted, "Suuuuuuuupe, Suuuuuuupe, Suuuuuuupe."

As the game ended, there was another announcement: The Supe and the
Secretary of the Navy granted all four classes Overnight Liberty, so then
they were delirious. Tonight was also a special celebration night at the
big amusement park nearby, which features a Haunted House at this time of
year, and lots of the mids had plans to go there.

Watching the teams face their own fans and sing their school songs is
unbelievable!! The Blue and Gold we recognize. The AF song was not that
familiar. At the end of each, the fists went up and BOTH teams yelled,
"BEAT ARMY!!" We all know that in the end, the three services will play on
the same playing field.

Thank you, Joyce, as always for the wonderful narrative report! Wish we
were there in Crabtown for the historic football game yestereday! Even our Mid
missed the exciting game (on the road in PA for a CC meet).

Good News!!

We got a call this afternoon from our son, Scott Lieng, from Riverfront Stadium in New Jersey where the Navy Sprint Football team shut out Army by a score of 14 to 0. He indicated that the offense came alive (377 yards - total offense) and the defense limited Army to 132 yards. The team has a four hour bus ride back to the yard, so they will be tired in class tomorrow. Also they will have a short week because they will leave for Ithaca, NY on Thursday to play Cornell next Friday. Good luck to the Sprint Team (And The Varsity) for continued success.

Go Navy! Beat Army!

A minor correction to an earlier post. Navy's Football team last beat Air
Force in 1998. The statistic that was misquoted was than Navy hasn't beat a
Nationally ranked Air Force team since 1985. This year's Air Force team was
ranked in the top 25 college teams in the US going into last Saturday's
game.

Overall, this was one of the best games I've had the pleasure of attending
in a long time. The team played extremely well and the
coaching/play-calling was balanced in a way not seen very often in a Navy
game. The right plays at the right time... Clock Management that was on a
par with the best Pro games... A goal line defense worthy of the Steel
Curtain of the 70's... And best of all, real-time adjustments on both the
Offense and Defense that reflected an extremely well prepared team capable
of reacting to the best Air Force could muster.

My congratulations and thanks to all involved for the best navy Football
game I've attended in many, many years.
