depending upon the circumstances, but generally i would encourage the
parents and the plebe to hang in there. set a goal of 4 weeks, 6
weeks, or
until the end of the 1st semester, etc. and then re-evaluate the
circumstances. some plebes do in fact want to leave after one week,
but
that is hardly enough time to fairly evaluate the usna.

Thanks, Dan. I think we've covered all those bases. We're hoping to get
our
Plebe to stay until Parents' Weekend. For the most part, we have to
wait for
calls out and have been unsuccessful with getting anyone in--even just
to
talk.

At the moment, we're still hoping our Plebe will stick. The Blue and

for the
proper decision for this particular Plebe would doubtless be
appreciated.

if a plebe is thinking about leaving at this point of plebe summer,
usually their paper work won't get turned in for another week to 10
days,
then 2-3 weeks later they may have their separation papers, meaning
about
the end of plebe summer, so they probably should hang in there until
the
end of plebe summer with out the paper work, then if they choose to
leave,
their paper work and separation will take place in a timely manner.
good
luck.

Greetings to all parents of USNA cadets. I fear that I may use the
wrong
terminology, but am ready to learn and make many new friendships. My
son, C2C Michael Deaver has completed his first two years at the Air
Force Academy. He will be arriving in Annapolis Aug. 6 to begin his
fall
semester as an exchange student. Mike is definitely looking forward to
this opportunity. Currently, he has completed CST, soaring, jump, and
is now up in Alaska at Elmendorf AFB doing OPS. He'll be reporting back
to CO on Thursday to spend the third summer session as a student
training advisor. Basically what he will be doing is advising and
helping with the classroom teaching before the cadets in survival
training go out. We live in Idaho between the two small towns of
Payette
and Weiser on the Idaho Oregon border about an hour west of Boise.
Best
of luck to all our cadets/midshipmen as the new academic semester
starts
in August. Jeanne O'Hara

Greetings Jeanne:
I'm certain your cadet will find the Yard similar to the Springs. As
you
can well imagine, Zoomies are frequent targets....so he might want to
look
up from his studies and keep an eye on his six.
Best of luck to him.

The pages look GREAT! Congratulations on putting together some
terrific
information! Can you please incorporate the enclosed message wherever
you
think it is most appropriate? I'd really like to get the word out
about
establishment of a listserver for the USNA parents to as many Navy
parents as
possible!

----------

SUBJ: Information on Subscription to the USNA Parent's Listserver

Welcome Prospective Member of the USNA Parents Net,

With the assistance of WP-ORG, the parents of U.S. Naval Academy
midshipmen
now have an automatic way to transfer information over internet! The
USNA-NET
is a listserver which automatically stores and forwards messages of
interest.
It is primarily intended for the parents of midshipmen although others
with an
interest in NAVY such as grads and USNA staff are also welcome. A
mission
statement for the USNA-NET is as follows:

MISSION STATEMENT
=================
1. Quickly and inexpensively share information about Navy parenting
between
members of the list.
2. Provide a forum to exchange ideas, tips, opinions, and views on the
Navy
parenting experience.
3. Distribute relevant Navy news to members in a timely fashion.

Operation is incredibly simple. Your short message to an internet
address in
Austin is replied to by a computer there which automatically re-
transmits the
message to all of the other members. There are some restrictions on
the types
of material that can be sent but none which hampers full operation
within the
constraints presented in the Mission Statement.

In the future, a storage capability will be added to provide static
information on request such as schedules for events, comments from
prior years
attendees, and virtually anything which can be sent as text.

USNA-NET has just started in June, 1998 but the programs it uses have
been
refined for four years with the West Point parents. Since the
listserver is
sponsored, there is no expense to you except that for sending and
receiving
internet messages. Most internet access providers have unlimited or
generous
minimum monthly allowances so, except for a brief phone call, the
service is
totally free.

Any number of parents may sign up for membership. The only
requirements are
as follows:

1. You have some connection with USNA, i.e. are either a parent,
graduate, or
staff member.
2. You agree to operate within Operating Rules which amplify the
Mission
Statement above.

Hi Jeanne,

Welcome aboard (at least temporarily)! We have a great bunch of Mids
from Utah
at the Academy. When Michael is situated, let us know and we'll tell
our guys
to watch for him. Except for the week before the Air Force-Navy game,
they'll
probably be pretty welcoming. If you have any questions about life at
sea
level, we'll be happy to help answer them.

Thanks. I've checked it out and really appreciate the top billing!

Does anyone else have any idea of a way to spread the word about the
listserver? The West Point version has been four years in the making
and I
seem to remember that it was slow to catch on. Anything we're able to
do to
bring more parents into the group will benefit everyone from the added
input
and perspectives!

Best regards,

We're new to this list and want to introduce ourselves. We're Jeff and
Sam
from Boring, OR. Our Midshipman is Troy, Class of '02. We thought we
were
going to have a new cadet up until the very end of April, but Troy
accepted
his USNA appointment instead. Since Dec. we've been following the WP
plebe-
net very closely and had so much figured out! Then all of a sudden we
needed
to switch gears and try to familiarize ourselves with the workings of a
new
Academy. While a lot is the same, a lot is also very different. But
one
thing is certain--it's so awesome to have a network of friends who
support you
and intimately understand what emotional roller coasters we're all
riding. We
look forward to helping in any way we can and hopefully meeting a lot
of you
PPW.
We were unable to attend I-Day for a number of reasons, and would love
to hear
the personal accounts from any of you who were there. Please e-mail
direct if
you've already posted them on the list.
We haven't had a phone call yet, but received letters written 7/4 and
7/9. No
comments as to whether he's received any of our mail. We got his
address
through an officer in our Parents Club of OR 7/6 (blessings to have
friends in
high places ! He'd already been there a week but we've sent him notes
and cards daily since. He is a caller type, so I'm thinking he
probably
hasn't been allowed to call. A friend of his from a different company
has
called home at least 4 times now. His first letter was really
encouraging,
but things are catching up with him by his second. The heat's on!
He's lost
6 lbs. in a week, and really doesn't have any to spare. Said he's
hungry all
the time and to send Power Bars. They're on the way! He saw a girl
pass out
in drill on Wed. and said that was weird. Although that's not
uncommon, it
was the first time he'd seen it happen.
About the mail, does anyone know how big their boxes are? During plebe
summer
do they pick up their mail privately or is it delivered to them in a
group
situation or in their rooms? Are care packages delivered by Squad
leaders or
picked up at their boxes? Do they open them in front of leaders? I
assume
they share what they receive - is that with the whole squad, or just
their
roomies?

yep, imagine so.

better write down your questions to ask him, when the phone call comes,
that 5-6 minutes goes fast and he will hang up when time is up.

i think the detailers pick up their mail for them during the summer.

never thought about how big, if the box is too full, guess it is saved
for
them like our post office does.

Dear Sam and Jeff

Welcome aboard!!!

I'm going to let other members of '02 handle your questions about I-Day
and
care packages because the rules vary from year to year. When our Mid
was a
Plebe, his mail was delivered, but now, I think mail is pick up from a
box.
Generally speaking, no phone calls are permitted for two to three
weeks. First
phone calls are scheduled for this weekend. Phone calls that are
allowed
before that are usually from unhappy Plebes, so no news is good news. I
think
during the summer, there is only time to share goodies with roommates,
but
during the rest of the year, anyone is welcome. The Academy has asked
that you
supply a tightly sealed container for storing goodies to cut down on
uninvited
guests to Bancroft and that for the summer, you send nutritious items,
reserving the good stuff (sweets and their favorite junk food) until
the
academic year begins.

Go Navy!!! Beat Army!!!

On I-Day the parent's briefing indicated that each plebe platoon would
have
a chance to call at a specified time this coming weekend (July 7-19)
and
that except for a very limited number of platoons, they would have
telephone privileges at the same time and day of the week on a regular
basis.

Our plebe (Platoon 1) sent us a form letter indicating that he would
call
between 8:45 and 9:30 on July 18. We assume that means A.M. Eastern
Daylight time - so since we are in California we will be up early that
day.

We just received our packet for Plebe-Parent Weekend. I have a couple
of
questions -

1. To sail - must there be two "B" qualified midshipmen in the
sailboat,
or can a parent be "qualified"?
If parents can be "qualified" how does one do it?
Do you have to take a swim test or does the navy take your word
that you can swim 100 yds?

2. What type of ID does one need to shop at the mid store in Bancroft
Hall?

Thanks for your help.

Joyce

We probably need to be careful not to rely to heavily on this - our
plebe
sent a form letter saying that he would call at 8:45 on July 18 and he
is
in Platoon 1 as far as we know. That conflicts with the time of 13:00
given below.

Hi! We are John and Deb Hefner from Belpre, Ohio. Our son Kris is a
plebe
in G13. He called Monday night. He sounded good but is having second
thoughts about staying there for 4 years. My husband and I are
concerned
and are hoping that he will be able to call again on Saturday. Does
anyone
know what time?

We attended I-Day and the parents briefing. I have it on tape and as
soon
as I figure out how to upload it to my PC I will send out a video clip
(8mm)
if anyone knows how?

Our oldest son Mike graduated from West Point in 94 and is finishing
his
obligation in the Army at Ft. Campbell. He gets out next March!

Our parents club of Central Ohio NAPCCO is having a get-together for
Plebe
parents this Sunday. Looking forward to talking to others and seeing
their
pictures and hearing about their letters/phone calls.

Deb Hefner

GO NAVY!!

Hey -

We got jipped ! JC's phone card wouldn't work and he spent 3 of his 5
precious
minutes trying to get it to. The 4th minute was waste for hooking us
up

seconds." All we got was, he is doing OK, other than he has "Plebe

Hi,

My daughter (00) had "plebe hack" for months it seems. I wanted her
to
go to Sick Bay, but she said everyone had it. I checked with my
pharmacist, and he was a formerly in the Navy, He said that typically
when you first get together as a group from so many areas of the
country,
you are exposed to a bunch of "germs"....your body takes care of the
germs you normally are exposed to at home but is intoduced to all these
other ones....anyway treating it with antibiotics isn't effective and
is
something they just have to work through on their own. I think the
stress of Plebe Summer also contributes...We encouraged our daughter to
TRY and get rest, and drink lots of fluids. She still had it when we
went out for Parent Weekend and as I recall when we got back home we
didn't feel too good..it's like the flu or a bad cold. She wasn't sick
all last year so it's something I think your body gets used to. You
can
always suggest having your plebe go down to sick bay to check it out.
Especially if the symptoms persist or get worse (i.e. ear or throat
infection, fever etc.) They would be able to treat an infection
with
antibiotics but may be hesistant to treat symtoms of cold or flu.
Good Luck!

Best Regards,

Lynn

We got a postcard of Baltimore from our son this week that indicated
the 3 hr
time frame he would be calling us. It was received 20 min. in to the
time
window. It was a timed 5 min. call with a quick goodbye before we knew
it.....seemed like under a minute. :(

He said he's doing fine, it's different than he expected??, it's not as
physical as he expected, one boy has dropped out of his squad already
who had
only received his appointment 2 days before I-Day, Troy likes it,
doesn't take
the yelling seriously (to heart), said their Co. is probably about in
the
middle as far as performance, likes his Texas and Maryland roommates,
they're
on the 2nd floor, mail box is only about 4" square (nicer to receive
things
that fit in there), his squad doesn't have to open their care packages
in
front of the squad leader (but some squads do), they don't get mail
every day
(but will get some today), sometimes they pick up their own, sometimes
it's
delivered, recommends Co. name/Platoon # be included in address for
ease of
delivery, everybody shares their food/care pkgs, they open them quick &
put
them away to avoid attention, wanted a drink bottle for his room, he's
on
track but doesn't know his event yet, may change to crew because his
time
trial was good......yeah, it's a run on sentence for a run on

Fellow USNA-NET Members,

One of the vehicles we'll be using to facilitate communication on the
listserver is FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions). These are, as the
name
implies, fairly common questions which are raised by members. Through
cataloging and having them available at a web site, parents will be
able to
browse for subject matter which interests them. Also, it makes answers
to
"standard" questions in the future a simple matter of cutting and
pasting the
appropriate answer.

"A journey of 1,000 miles begins with a single step." Therefore, I've
enclosed the first two FAQs which will be added to our NavyFAQ file.
I've
used information provided in another post for the first FAQ. The
Trident page
which was then used to extract some interesting goal information for
that
organization. It has been turned into a draft FAQ since I'm not sure
of
exactly what Trident is. If someone could complete the FAQ and either
send it
to me or to usna-net@navy-usna.org, I'd sure appreciate it.

Best regards,

Dolf

Q: Where can I get information and pictures about Summer Training?

A: The current issue of Trident has an article entitled "Plebe Summer
Training: Week Three" and it is loaded with photos. The online version
is
available at

Anita

Q: What is Trident and what are its goals?

A: (draft). Trident is and association . . . . . Their guidelines
and goals
are as follows:

Guidelines For Everyone To Live By As We Move The Naval Academy Forward

1. Uphold the standards of the Naval Academy.
2. Be a person of integrity.
3. Lead by example (meet the standard you are holding others to).
4. Strive for excellence without arrogance.
5. Do your best.
6. Treat everyone with dignity and respect.
7. Tolerate honest mistakes from people who are doing their best.
8. Seek the truth (rumors and unverified anecdotes undermine morale).
9. Speak well of others (gossip undermines human dignity).
10. Keep a sense of humor and be able to laugh at yourself.

OUR GOAL: Make the chain of command work by enhancing mutual trust,
respect
and good two-way communications.

Dolf,

I think the "Trident" they were referring to is a weekly Academy
Newspaper Similar to the "West Pointer"

Best Regards,,

Lynn

Greetings Kent and Family:
Plebe Hack is a common illness. It's caused by stress, stress, stress,
and
the new microbes brought to the close living quarters. It usually
vanishes
about the time of Parent's Weekend.
It may not have been his calling card....the telephone system on the
yard
isn't state-of-the-art. In short, it is really hit and miss.
Hang in there, he'll get through.
Best.

Thanks ! I think I'll check into one of those 800 #'s. They don't
sound to
expensive and then he can dial direct without operators, cards. Time
is of the
essence when it is only 5 minutes.

----------

THE FIRST (PLEBE) YEAR

Some feel the Plebe year is more demanding and stressful than Plebe Summer. Of
course one of the reasons for this is the fact that so much is expected in
such a short period of time. There are come-arounds, rates to be learned,
athletics, watches to be stood, military functions, marches, academic studies,
cleaningrooms and uniforms etc etc etc. Once the Brigade returns following
Parent's Weekend, there are as many as three upper classmen to each plebe, and
the result can be very intimidating.

During the academic year, a typical day begins with Plebe wake-up (between
0500 and 0530), well over an hour before the upper-class get up. Plebes need
to read and be conversant with their newspaper article, memorize menus,
professional topics, and "chow calls". At around 0630 they will probably have
their "come around" of the day with a youngster or second class who will give
them their professional topics for the day. Morning quarters formation is at
0700 for the entire company; breakfast is shortly afterwards, and the first
academic class starts at 0755. There will be four class periods in the
morning, the last one ending at 1145. After this ten minute grilling period,
they will probably have another "chow call", which means standing in a
prearranged spot in the company area and yelling at the top of their lungs:

"Sir, you have ten minutes until noon meal formation. Noon meal formation goes
outside. The uniformfor noon meal formation is winter working blues, stripers
carry swords. The menu for noon meal is: (this changes with every meal, but
all plebes must memorize each day's menu's)

Tuna Salad Sandwich Kit
Sweet Pickle Chips
Cheese Doodles
Mayonnaise, Sliced Tomato, Lettuce and Onion
White Bread
Lady Baltimore Layer Cake
Iced Tea with Lemon Wedges, Milk

The officers of the watch are: the Command Duty Officer is Lt. (name) 1st
Company Officer, the Officer of the Watch is Midshipman Lt. (name), Brigade
Assistant Operations Officer. The professional topic of the week is Naval
Aviation. The major events in the yard today are:

0800 Blood drive on Deck 4-0
1600 Men's Water Polo vs. Army, Lejeune Hall
1900 Company Officer's time

"You now have ten minutes - Sir!"

As your Plebe is loudly yelling this, he is typically surrounded by several
second class who are just waiting for him/her to make an error. Following this
five minute "chow call" (which is very similar to the ten minute call) they
"chop" to formation in the center of the passageway, eyes straight ahead,
squaring all corners, and greeting all upper-class with a loud "GO NAVY, SIR"
or "BEAT ARMY, SIR"! As a result of all this yelling, don't be alarmed at your
Plebe's hoarse voice when he/she calls home. In fact, they sound as if they
are catching a cold all summer and for the better part of the first year.

All through lunch, the plebe keeps his "eyes in the boat", serves the upper-
class, responds to all their questions. After taking a bite, places the
utensil back on the plate and the hand goes back into the lap. Each table is
set for twelve Mids in the squad. After serving seconds, the Plebe can request
permission to "shove off" and if granted, (seldom) returns to his room.

After noon meal, there are two more classes which end at 1505. Non-varsity
athletes march in parades and play intramural sports during the fall and
spring. Varsity athletes practice every day of the week and are exempt from
marching in the parades when their sport is in season.

Evening meal is served buffet-style between 1700 and 1900. There is open
seating during evening meal and mids can eat at their convenience between the
prescribed times. Evening meal is followed by a study hour at 2030. Plebe taps
and upper-class taps are at 2400 with a muster each night. Plebe rooms are
usually inspected daily and formal inspections (white glove and black sock)
are conducted about twice each semester.

"Youngsters" have town liberty on Saturday until 0100 Sunday morning. They
rate three weekends of liberty per semester, meaning that they can leave on
Saturday noon and they don't have to return until Sunday at 1900. Second Class
rate six weekends per semester and "Firsties" unlimited weekends, the
exception being when they are assigned military watches. Of course the Plebes
get their fair share of military duties too.

For the Plebes the hassles continue all the way through the first and second
semesters. If Navy beats Army in football, "carry on" is usually granted until
Christmas leave. This means that many restrictions are eleminated; for example
, Plebes can sleep when they want to, even during the day! Periodically
through the academic year, rumors circulate that maybe they can have stereos
or their rates will be changed but the privileges never come until after final
exams.

"Herndon" is the big event for Plebes during Commissioning Week and possibly
the biggest event of the year. Upperclassmen coat the Herndon Monument with
200 pounds of lard and cement a "Dixie Cup" (Plebe Hat)on the top. The Plebes
must work together to replace the "Dixie Cup" with an upperclassman's hat.
Recorded times to accomplish this task vary from year to year. The longest
recorded time in history now belongs to the Class of '98, who took four hours
and six minutes to complete the changeover.

The shortest time occurred in 1969, 1 minute and 30 seconds (no lard was used
that year). The successful Plebe is rewarded with a mounted Superintendent's
shoulder board and tradition holds that the Mid will be the first to make
Admiral from his/her graduating class-it has yet to come true.

We keep waiting, and feel certain that it will be a Midshipman from Central
Florida when it does occur. Who knows perhaps he or she will be from the Class
of 2002!

----------

ACADEMICS
Academics are the key to a Mid's success, especially since most everything is
based on merit and class standing. Studies are very demanding and after
getting A's in high school, getting a C or D or failing an exam can be quite a
shock. You must remember that only the best of the best get accepted to
Annapolis, and the competition once there can be fierce. Choosing a major that
one has a passion for is very important, one that helps the Mids stay
motivated even while studying long hours and many weekends.

If you can validate a course during Plebe summer you will be able to move
ahead or take more advanced courses. All mids are assigned academic counselors
who will help them select the best course offerings. Towards the end of Plebe
year, each Mid makes a selection from one of the eighteen majors with the help
of his/her academic and military advisor.

Since the Naval Academy is such a concentrated four year program, if someone
falls behind academically, it is likely the Mid will be forced to resign. A
minimum course load is 15 hours per semester and a 2.0 CQRP is required to
graduate. Moreover, the academy does not waste its time with anyone that fails
due to lack of effort. The Academic Review Board meets every semester to
review individual records of those who have done poorly during the previous
semester. They look at all aspects of the midshipman's record and decide
whether to separate him/her from the school. Some courses may be available
during Summer School for make-up and/or enrichment, but for many, it's too
little, too late. Attrition rates for the incoming class runs about 27% by the
time that class graduates. Extra instruction (EI) is available to all Mids. It
is said that everyone who receives an appointment should be able to conquer
the academics if they really try and the professors and officers want to help
everyone succeed. Small classes are a definite learning advantage, but if you
go to class unprepared, your lack of preparedness will not go unnoticed.

Many plebes are interested in one of the seven designated degrees but are
afraid they won't be able to handle the academics. When making that decision,
it is usually best to start out in a more demanding major because it is easier
to drop back to a less challenging major than to get into a tougher one later
on. All plebes will be taking a similar course load their first year. It
should look something like this:

FIRST SEMESTER - 16 CREDITS
2ND SEMESTER - 18 CREDITS
Calculus I
-------------------------Calculus II
Chemistry
 ------------------------- Chemistry
Government
-----------------------American Naval Heritage
Naval Leadership I
 ----------------Fundamentals of Naval Science
Rhetoric & Intro. to Literature I
---Rhetoric & Intro to Literature II
Physical Education (wt. Trng &

There are many special academic opportunities that offer an even greater
challenge for those students that meet the criteria, such as; Trident
Scholars, Honors Program and Voluntary Graduate Education Program (VGEP). The
catalog gives a detailed description of these programs.

Every midshipman must participate in either varsity or an intramural sport.
There are 26 men's and 12 women's varsity teams and 13 intramural sports.
Academy teams are very successful which is impressive when you realize that
most of the schools with whom the academy competes are much larger schools.

Moreover, the other schools do not maintain the same high academic standards
for their varsity athletes. Many parents have made the observation that a
Plebe can get involved with a varsity sport even if they have never
participated before.

The intramural program is equally extensive and also quite competative. It
pits companies against companies and battalions against battalions. It is a
great way to stay in shape, vent frustrations and relieve stress.
------------

THE COLOR COMPANY

A Color Company is determined each year and all 36 companies participate in a
point system competition which continues throughout the year, until
commissioning. Points are accumulated for performance in academics, sports,
parades, and military activities. The winner becomes what is called the Color
Company. With this honor, there is an added responsibility and certain
privileges that are awarded and recognized during Commissioning Week. At the
Color Parade during Commissioning Week, when the results are announced, a
friend or fiancee of the winning company's Company Commander - designated
Color Girl - tranfers the flag from the old color company to the new. As yet,
no Commander of a Color Company has been a woman. When that happens, she will
designate whomever she desires to join her in the transfer of colors.

--------

SOCIAL LIFE
The social life of a Plebe can be defined by two words, slim and non-existent.
Plebes are not allowed to date (except on four specific occasions during the
year, the first time being a Valentine's Day Formal). A big Saturday night for
most Plebes is getting a pizza and coke with other Plebes and going to see a
movie, or visiting with their sponsor's family. A really big weekend is when a
mid is lucky enough to have his/her own family visit for a weekend! Dahlgren
Hall is a wonderful place to relax and watch TV with your Mid, the food is
decent and inexpensive.

Inter-brigade dating (between male and female midshipmen) is not very common
and dating between Plebe and upper-classmen is strictly forbidden. A few mids
are able to maintain a relationship with a girlfriend or boyfriend back
home(known as the 2% club). Maintaining this type of relationship is difficult
and adds an extra burden to the life of the mid. Marriage is strictly against
the rules while in attendance, but many marry immediately following
graduation. In fact this is the busiest time of the year at the Academy
Chapel.

---------

MID MONEY AND "FUNNY $$"

Upon arrival each appointee must have deposited $1,500.00 with the academy to
be used in partial payment for uniforms, supplies and a brand new computer.
Many parents and candidates wonder how much spending money Mids should have
when they report in to duty. To begin with, realize that starting with I-Day,
the next time they walk out the gate will be on Parents Weekend in August,
except for a couple of field trips to Washington D.C. and Baltimore. Probably
their only expenditures will be for personal items purchased at the Mid Store
such as a mop, broom, floor wax, cotton balls, shoe polish and perhaps a few
snacks.

Yes Mom, the broom and mops are for C l e a n i n g H o u s e !!
They really will have mastered this art by the time you see them next. A
hundred to a hundred and fifty dollars should suffice them for ready spending
money in most cases.

The bank on the Academy grounds is called the Navy Federal Credit Union
(NFCU). All mids are asked if they would like to open a checking and/or
savings account there; most Mids find it very convenient. There are automatic
tellers so the Mids have access to their money at any time. Most Mids have
their pay checks automatically deposited directly to their NFCU account.

All midshipmen will have a pay account monitored by the Academy. This is
called "the funny money" by the mids. It's the Mids' money but they have very
little, if any control over it. Every month Mids are paid $543.90 by the
government which goes into the "funny money" account. Then money for such
things as uniforms, dry cleaning, hair cuts, laundry, and tickets to concerts
and ball games are automatically deducted from that account. Plebes usually
receive approximately $50.00 per month for their "mad money" and the amount
they receive is increased each year they remain at the school. They also
receive a $200.00 advance at Christmas for their shopping/travel needs. They
must however purchase their own cleaning supplies as well as bulletin board
articles periodically. Most parents supplement the Mid during their four years
and it is very appreciated, if not almost necessary.By the time they reach
their "Firstie" year they pocket around $325.00 per month, and most are
several thousand dollars in debt due to the low interest loan offered them
while second classes. Most 2/C sport new cars that summer and a new stereo
system. Since parents aren't paying for this wonderful $325,000 education,
many parents opt to assist the Academy with a donation to the Alumni
Association for the Mids Welfare Fund to assist with the costs of non-
government supported costs, of which there are many!!

During the Plebe year, a Class Ring/Crest Committee is formed. Each class
designs its own ring crest. This tradition began sometime in the mid to late
1800's and continues yet today. These crests can be observed on display at
Preble Hall Museum. The ring company chosen to produce the rings usually also
makes charms, necklaces, pins, and tie bars with the class crests on, ready in
time for Mothers Day which many purchase as gifts for mothers, fathers, girl
friends etc.

At the end of their 3/C year, orders are taken for their individual rings.
Each basic ring is the same with the class crest on one side and the academy
seal on the other. Mids personalize their rings by ordering any stone they
like (or can afford), everything from gold plugs to diamonds.

At this point many parents, or grandparents choose to pass on a heirloom that
the stones may be removed and placed in the class ring. The rings are delivered
for a week long fitting period, just before Spring Break during the 2/C year.
After this fitting period, the 2/C are not permitted to wear their rings until
the Ring Dance. If a "Firstie" catches a 2/C wearing it early, the 2/C owes
him (or her) a beer.

The ring dance is the most impressive and symbolic dance at the academy. After
a special dinner in King Hall with the Admiral, the 2/C and his/her date walk
over to the dance. The past three years it has been held outside on Radford
Terrace, but inclement weather can force it inside at Dahlgren Hall.A female
date wears her Midshipmans' ring tied around her neck on a blue and gold
ribbon, a male date may wear his Midshipmans' ring on a ribbon pinned to his
lapel, on his pinkie finger or simply in his pocket. The "date" dips the ring
in a binnacle filled with water that has been flown in from the seven seas,
specially for this occasion. When the couple passes through a giant replica of
the class ring, the date places the ring on the Mids finger, and gives the mid
a congratulatory kiss. In addition to dancing, there are boat cruises on the
Severn River or rides around the yard in a horse drawn carriage and, later in
the evening the most beautiful fireworks display over the river.

As a Mid the ring is worn with the seal inside, but after graduation the ring
is turned with the crest inside and the seal outside, so everyone can read
"The United States Naval Academy. " They have justifiably become very proud
"ring knockers".

COMPUTER CONVERSATIONS WITH YOUR MID

One of the hardest things parents of Midshipmen have to adjust to is the
inability to pick up the phone and call their son or daughter. Unfortunately
there are no phones in the rooms at Bancroft Hall.

Fortunately, with the modern wonders of computer technology, we have a way to
communicate with the midshipman on a regular basis, through the use of a
computer equipped with a modem. This is the way all midshipmen communicate on
a daily basis and a medium they soon adjust to. All grades, announcements,
movement plans, orders and announcements are transferred to each midshipmen
via his/her computer. Why shouldn't we get in line (or on line) as they say?
Your Central Florida Parents Club has several members well versed in this new
age wonder and can offer a world of advice on how to go about it, in the event
that you're a little "green" in this area. Some parents "talk" on a daily
basis with their Mid's, once Plebe summer is over. A program called ICQ is
great for this and it is presently free. Get it, try it, and your Mid will
know whenever you are both on line at the same time.

Every Midshipman is issued a computer at the start of the academic year. If
you have a computer with communication package and modem at home, you can
communicate with your Mid, too. Every Midshipman has an E-Mail address. You
can send a message through CompuServe, America-On-Line, Prodigy, Microsoft
Net, or any other means for "surfing the net".Your Mid's computer flashes them
a message when they have mail waiting in their in-box. He or she then answers
by the same medium or calls home on a telephone, whichever is appropriate. It
takes just seconds for you to send or receive a message over the internet, and
there are no long distance phone charges. As soon as the Plebe Class of 2002
are issued their email address, changes will be made to the Central Florida
Parents Club pages to include a link to email your son or daughter right from
our own web site. That way Grandma, Grandpa, Aunt Mary etc. can also stay in
touch.

We strongly recommend this method of staying in touch with your Midshipman.

This is N O T a program for computer nerds only! Anyone who can turn on a
computer and type should be able to use this medium for keeping up with the
everyday life of your Mid. While a letter may also be sent it takes on the
average three or four days for the Midshipmen to receive their mail at
Bancroft, while an E-Mail message is there in about 27 seconds!!!

The Central Florida Parents Club maintains a WEB site at:
http://www.fla-homes.com/centfl~1.html for non frames viewing and at
http://www.fla-homes.com/usnapc-frames.html for frames capable browsers.

You may want to pass these URL address's to friends, and family so they can
stay updated too.

supporting the USNA Parents Club of Central Florida's WEB site. Your club dues
are not used for these costs. Remember them should you be in the market for a

----------

KNOW YOUR MIDSHIPMANS RANKS
As you wander the "Yard" on I-Day or any other visiting day, be able to
recognize the various ranks and know when you are meeting an officer of the
Brigade, Battalion or a Company Officer. If you know your various insignias
you will find "Mid Watching" is a lot more fun.

---------

RULES AND REGULATIONS
SUBJECT TO CHANGE WITHOUT NOTICE
Midshipmen are allowed to leave the Academy only while on town liberty or
during leave periods and when not restricted for academic or disciplinary
reasons. Town liberty is from 10:15 a.m. until 1:00 a.m. each Saturday. On
days of home football games, liberty begins upon completion of the game and
lasts until 1:00 a.m. During three-day weekends, such as Labor Day, plebes
have town liberty from 10:15 a.m. until 1:00 a.m. on Saturday, and 8:00 a.m.
until midnight Sunday. NO TOWN LIBERTY IS GIVEN ON MONDAY.TOWN
LIBERTY is
granted to plebes who may not travel outside a 22 mile circle which is
measured from the Chapel Dome.

WEEKEND LIBERTY has no mileage limits and no military obligations, i.e, taps,
meal formation, etc. during weekend liberty, with the exception of football
games. All midshipmen are required to attend home football games. Plebes are
not entitled to weekend liberty. Midshipmen above the rank of plebe are
entitled to the following number of weekends. (A short weekend extends from
1015 Saturday to 1800 Sunday and a long weekend lasts from 1600 on Friday to
1800 Sunday. A three-day weekend extends the time period for 24 hours. )

There are several ways that midshipmen may earn extra long weekends. They
include earning an "A" on a Physical Readiness Test (PRT), increasing a PRT
score by 10 points over previous semester's score, havig a Semester Quality
Point Rating (SQPR) of 0.3 higher than their Cumulative Quality Point Rating
(CQPR), making the Supt's List(2 weekends)(3.4 Semester Quality Point Rating,
an "A" in performance, and a "B" or better in PE), or making the Dant's List
(1 weekend)(2.9 Semester Quality Point Rating or better, "B" in performance,
and a "B" or better in PE). Plebes get Sunday/Monday liberty for Supts List
and Dants List. They only get one weekend for and none for any of the other
achievements listed above, except when granted specifically by the Dant.
Weekends have been granted to plebes in the past for victories over Army in
various sports and for Brigade spirit at the Army/Navy football game.

YARD LIBERTY is authorized from 5:30 p.m. to 7:15p.m. daily. Plebes may escort
visitors during yard liberty on weekends and holidays and prior to 7:15 p.m.
on week nights; escorting privileges are limited to parents, guardians,
immediate family, close relatives or family friends. They are authorized use
of the Officer's Club only as a guest of an Officer's Club member, parent or
sponsors. They can invite you as a parent to participate in noon or evening
meal in King Hall. You can also be invited to scheduled sporting events,
musical productions, etc. Plebes can attend week night events that extend past
7:15 p.m. only if their semester grade average is greater or equal to 2.0 on a
4.00 scale.

CIVILIAN CLOTHING is not an option for Plebes and Youngsters who must remain
in uniform at all times. Plebes and Youngsters are not allowed to keep
civilian clothes in their rooms and/or in the homes of their sponsors. This
requirement is lifted during leave (not liberty).

OPERATING AND KEEPING CARS is not allowed for plebes and Youngsters. They
can
ride in a private auto when accompanied or driven by parents, guardians, USNA
approved sponsors, staff, faculty members or when escorting to a formal dance,
play or concert in the yard. Second Class Midshipmen may drive cars, but not
on the yard. They may keep a car in Annapolis but it must be parked 2 miles
from the Academy. Only Firsties may drive and park on the Yard.

STEREOS, RADIOS, WALK-MANS AND CD PLAYERS are not allowed during plebe
year.
Music CDs may not be played on computer equipped with CD drives and sound
cards.

Plebes will NOT consume alcohol regardless of their age. Upper-class
midshipmen cannot drink, including non-alcoholic beer, unless they are within
the legal drinking age of 21. THIS IS A SEPARATION OFFENSE.

Plebes are authorized to attend Sunday worship services in the Annapolis area.
They must return to the Academy immediately following the service.

Any involvement in hazardous activities such as scuba diving, hang gliding,
etc. needs approval from their Battalion Officer via their company Officer.

------------

LEAVE PERIODS

Every leave begins after completion of the Mid's last scheduled exam or
military duty. A movement order gives authorization for a group of Mids to
leave the Academy for various events (i.e. sports, club and drills). There is
a specific criteria for every leave.

In the fall, everyone has Labor Day, Columbus Day and Veterans Day liberty and
at least two days off for Thanksgiving weekend. Around Thanksgiving, the big
event of the year takes place Army vs. Navy in football. The timing changes
each year depending on location and TV availability, but it usually the first
weekend in December. All Mids are transported to the game and usually are
required to sit with the Brigade. At times Firsties have been permitted to sit
with the parents if they are in attendance at the game. This decision is often
left up to the Company Officer to decide.

Mids can usually count on going home for Christmas leave after their last exam
or last military duty, and this period usually occurs between December 16th
and 20th. The entire Brigade must report back the same day and is a few days
after the New Year, which equates to about 3 weeks of vacation time. Many
sports teams (swimming among others) often practice during the Christmas
break, and may cut into your Mids vacation time if he/she participates in
these sports. Remember too, that the Parents Club of Central Florida sponsors
an annual Holiday Ball for the Mids and parents. This is a great time to see
you Mid dressed in his/her dressiest uniform. Last year roughly 223 people
attended the dinner dance.

The return from Christmas break brings about "the dark ages", a time at the
Academy where things seem to close up for the winter and the bitter cold sets
in for Florida Mids. Everyone has Martin Luther King's birthday and George
Washington's birthday off and then the next break isn't until Spring Break in
early March. It is nine days long including weekends. After this break the
Brigade returns for an intercessional period and scheduled Forrestal Lectures
and other events that cannot be scheduled during other times of the year.Early
cruises are scheduled to begin following the intercessional and many Mids are
already gone when graduation occurs at the end of Graduation Week.

Read you loud and clear! As to confirmation of your e-mail, that's
something I believe you can set as a property of your server
(Netscape/Microsoft Exchange, etc.) But I leave it to the REALLY
knowledgeable web-masters we have in this group to tell us just how. (I
vaguely remember stumbling through my properties pages and leaving it set
NOT to "echo" my messages back to me.) OR...just use us, or an e-friend, to
check.....like you just did.

Date: Sat, 25 Jul 1998 10:16:59 -0400

Good morning!

I'm waiting by the phone for Kris to call, his company is scheduled to =
call at 9:45. I just returned from Washington DC and had an opportunity =
to attend the Plebe Practice Parade, Wednesday evening, July 22!!! I =
actually got to see Kris, I must have only been 3 feet from him. The =
companies marched right between the 2 sets of bleachers where I was =
sitting. I video-taped the entire practice parade and my girlfriend =
took pictures. I will have them developed today. They all looked =
great! They marched out to Warden Field around 6:30 and practiced 2 =
sets of the entire parade until well after 8:00 pm. It was really hot =
but the sun was covered by clouds for about half of the practice. The =
detailers gave the plebes several orders to "hydrate" during the =
practice. One plebe was on crutches and sat in front of me. Another =
plebe was with him, probably assigned to make sure he I think they did =
a formal dress parade last night. Each company carred a flag with the =
letter of their company so I knew where Kris (G) was at all times. I =
think this is what we will see on Friday, August 7, Parents weekend. =20

KRIS JUST CALLED! 9:50! It was supposed to be 5 minutes but seemed =
more like 30 seconds. He said his "plebe hack" is mostly gone. He =
didn't see me at the parade! His eyes were straight ahead and he wasn't =
allowed to look left or right until they told him. =20

He also said that he thinks his company will go to the Orioles game on =
August 4. The game is at 7:35. They should get a chance to call from =
there.=20

I'm off to the Post Office to mail a care package. Haven't sent any =
this week since I was out of town. =20

I hope you all get your phone calls today!

Just click on link and you should go there. I think on today's posting I

Our son had sent us the form letter that said that he would be calling
between 8:30 and 9:25. Last Saturday he called at 12:59 -- when we
weren't home. Have all of your kids called during the designated time
-- needless to say, we are glued to the phone today --

Hoping to hear his voice!!

Subject: usna-net: Change in / Archive of Past Messages

Fellow USNA-NET Members,

Well, we've passed our first month's birthday and it looks like this
listserver is well on it's way! (:>) Thanks to everyone who has contributed
to make our cyber-support community a comfortable place for newcomers!

Now that we have an established "nucleus" of members, it seems to be time to
start creating some of the infrastructure which will permit expansion to a
very large number . . . .1,000 . . . .2,000 . . . or more.

I've changed the address on the messages sent to usna-net@navy-
usna.org Previously, if you hit the button, the message went to the
listserver. However, now it will go to the individual who submitted the
broadcast. This change will permit personal traffic to be more easily
directed to the intended individual instead of being sent to all of our
members!

Also, we have established an archive of the messages. You can at any time
refer to them and browse past message traffic. I've enclosed an FAQ which
describes the procedure as well as the current list of the archived message
files. As always, I'd appreciate any additions and corrections being sent
directly to me.

BTW, I always ask for direct feedback in order to keep the level of non-
mission related traffic to a minimum. I'll gladly summarize the needed
changes and broadcast one updated message. The alternative would be to have
members annoyed with keeping track of several responses on the same subject
which may range over several days. Experience has shown that as the volume
grows, not everyone has lots of patience with "techno-litter." It isn't a
problem now and if we are all conscious of the possibility, I'm sure it won't
become one! (:>)

As always, please let me know if you have any questions on any of the above!
I'm really happy about the way this new listserver has taken off and am
looking forward to using it to provide lots of communication help to our USNA
cyber-family! (:>)

Best regards,

Dolf

Q: How do I find subjects for and retrieve archived messages?

A: Since all broadcast messages are retained on file, there is a three step
process to find the item you're seeking. You need to (1) retrieve the index
of all documents, (2) retrieve a file containing the actual message, and (3)
Find the text within the file. Detail steps using an example are as follows:

1/ Get the current index by sending a message to
majordomo@navy-usna.org as follows:

     index usna-net

That will deliver a message which has a section as follows:

BROADCAST MESSAGE JOURNALS & DIGESTS
====================================
. . .
v01.n010 35408 980719 A
v01.n011 35248 980719 A
 . . .

Find the date that you are interested in and record the name of the
corresponding file. For example 7/19/98 has the entry "v01.n011".

2/ Retrieve that file by sending majordomo@usna-navy.org a message as follows:

     get usna-net v01.n011

Examine that file for an entry your are interested in, such as the following:

. . .
Topics in this issue...
   (1) Plebe Summer Training (Janet Ferrara jferrara@vmicro.com)
   (2) Plebe Summer Training (Janet Ferrara jferrara@vmicro.com)
   (3) Summer cruises (Laurenrich@aol.com)
   (4) Re: Plebe Call (Laurenrich@aol.com)
   (5) "Why" Behind the "What" of Plebe Summer Training (DolfnJudy@aol.com)
   (6) FAQ: Additional Information (DolfnJudy@aol.com)
   (7) Plebe Parent Survival Guide - Part 1 (DolfnJudy@aol.com)

3/ Use your software's search capability to find the subject's title within
that message file. For example, (find - function) "Plebe Parent Survival
Guide - Part 1".
