Hello everyone!

we had a wonderful call from our son, Andrew. Today was his
18th birthday and he has a touch of the dreaded plebe
hack.

The packages my friends and I sent had not
yet arrived, so I called Dolly at Midshippers
-- it must have been 3:30 p.m. Eastern time
and I left a voice mail message, asking for
some cupcakes and gatorade powder to be delivered,
and noting that it was probably too late ofr
today...tomorrow would be fine.

But guess what! I just got e-mail from
midshippers that the package was delivered
a few hours ago!

Dolly is totally swell!!!

(Where's Dan when we need him? 6 more days to go!!!!!)

I agree with the sentiments expresed today -- it is great to hear from
your child -- especially when they seem to be doing so well! Things can
be tough but not impossible -- I can't help but wonder if the detailers
have been trained especially well -- perhaps they have been told to be
tough but don't be, shall we say, jerks...

My daughter is a training cadet at the Air Force Academy so I get to
hear the "other side" -- she is sensitive to the problems these kids
deal with -- she, in fact, is dealing with a cadet whose friend back
home died this past week -- she told me that all she has done is to be a
good listener. In my mind, this is a result of the good training that
the trainers experienced (not to say that my daughter is a pretty great
kid -- but I'm somewhat biased) I really believe that our kids are
doing well because of the kids that are training them!

I am anxiously awaiting Parents' Weekend -- my son told me that we would
be shopping for ....TUPPERWARE -- help me, I'm in some sort of alternate
universe!

Hi there,
We also had a positive call from our son Peter (02) this morning. He
has commented how the 2nd set detailers seem more professional, and say
unusual things like "good job!" once in a while. They are being treated
with a little more respect, he says. Still tough, but he feels like there
is more of a purpose.
Marilyn asked about Tupperware: It is sold by distributors, like Avon,
so you need to find a representative. I buy Rubbermaid containers sold
most places (large grocery stores,etc.).
Are many of you Plebe parents eating in King Hall on friday?. Our son
doen't want to. Just wondering if that was common.
    Hardly wait till PPW.

Just a Reminder . . .

There are only 5 days remaining until Parent's Weekend!

we went to the friday night dinner in king hall with the mids. would
recommend it, especially if you have never eaten there. it truly is
marvelous to see and perhaps understand a bit about how things go on the
yard.

several mice live in bancroft hall along with the mids, therefore
tupperware is handy to store the care packages. don't be surprised if you
make a stop at the super to purchase some chocolate bars, gatprade, etc.

take time to thank the detailers when you meet them. it has been hard work
but satisfying work for them taking care of the plebes.

plan on spending as much time as you have on the yard prior to liberty,
you'll enjoy it. you can watch am and noon formation thurs if you are
there. value the liberty time with your mids, it will go quickly.
typically pictures are taken of mids right after fri liberty begins, but
very few take advantage of it. these picts are for local newspapers. the
plebes are tired of lines, etc. and are ready to go eat a good meal and to
ressssssssssst. on friday night it is not uncommon for the yard to be
thriving of people at midnight, the mids willll not be late reporting back,
so they get back early and then you can walk around and bs each other.

Hi Network ---

Has anyone else noticed the differences in the prices quoted for
the dinner at King Hall? In the PPW Handbook sent out a couple
of weeks ago it was $7.50, in the packet received this week it
was $12.00, and now I read Dan's message that it is $10.00.
Question of the day--which is correct? I'm still hoping to
convince our son (Todd Wilson, O-27) to go, but .......

We are glad just to be going as we didn't decide until last
Sunday to do it. Fortunately there were still good prices to be
found. When you make air reservations, be sure to check Cheap
Tickets, Inc. You'll be amazed at what they can do.

See you there!

Hi, All!
I have seen on the Usenet that a lot of the plebes think the 2nd
set detailers are more professional. The first set were supposed to be
harder and the 2nd set were supposed to be of a different "mind set" SO, =
it
appears to be working! I'm glad, that the plebes noticed a difference!

Dan Carter is right! Please try to go to King Hall for the dinner, =
(whatever it costs!), it will be one of the best experiences you'll have =
at the Academy, and take your cameras! You'll have a chance to meet many =
of their friends this way, and maybe some of their wonderful =
upperclassmen that you have been hearing so much about.

The plebes all need lots of deodorant, hand soap, (maybe some foot
powder for athletes foot), lots of shoe box sized plastic containers, =
(they
ask for Tupperware, but Rubbermaid is just as good and easier to obtain =
on
short notice) Stick Stain removers, powdered drink mixes, (but not tea, =
as it is a diuretic), Power bars, granola bars, shoe polish, white and =
black (eventually) maybe some brasso (if allowed, verify this is okay =
with your son), rags for polishing their brass and shoes.

If you are going out for a steak dinner, go to the "Outback Restaurant" =
I
think it is in the city of Parole, about 20 minutes from Annapolis, all =
the
MIDS love the food there! (me, too)

The time will go by so fast-zip- then it will be time for him or her to =
go back.=20

I wanted to prepare you for something that might happen on Sunday night. =
As a
joke, (also tradition) the upperclassmen may be playing Christmas Carols =
from their rooms,
(very loudly) just to remind the plebes that the next time they see =
their
families will be Christmas, (which is not true, because they do get 4 =
days
off for Thanksgiving. (but there is no Thanksgiving music is there?) My
husband, Tom, my daughter Christine (20 now) Mike and I were standing by =
the
Rotunda outside on the top level (near Brancroft) when the music =
started. I
have a great picture of Mike standing with his hands on his hips =
laughing
(the Chapel in the background) We could see several MIDS hanging out of
their windows and shouting things in good fun. I got a little depressed
at that moment, but Mike thought it was hilarious!! I have this picture
on my desk at work, because it reminds me to "take all of this with a
grain of salt" and laugh at it, as my own son did!=20

Parents Club members bring your name badges from your clubs with you and =
wear them, you'll run into people from your state, guaranteed! I know =
how surprised I was to see so many people from Calif. (my state)

Look for Mike Ferrara, Company 15, say hello, he's the really tall one =
(6'3") in white (haha).

Note to Marilyn SZWARC: Talk about alternate universes! You'll also get =
to see the plebes rooms and see that they can really make a bed (rack!), =
neat and trim! Another revelation!

Wishing I could be with all of you for the fun!=20

Just to add positive emphasis to doing dinner in King Hall. Your plebe has
seen enough of King Hall, but this atmosphere is totally different. If
nothing else, tell them to humor you and the rest of the weekend is theirs.

It was a most enjoyable evening. The food was good and as mentioned, it was a
great time to meet roommates and their parents. The year that we went, there
were only 2 mids and 4 parents at our table for 12. We had double the food
and boy did our plebes enjoy it. Also, we had no detailers in sight.

This is one of the few times to get to do dinner like this. Until you see the
size of King Hall from a table perspective, it's hard to imagine. Also, our
plebes felt very 'grown up' being able to tell us where to sit, what they do
with their covers etc. This was probably the only time in those 6 weeks that
THEY were in control--not their parents, not their detailers.

Are there any parents of Lucky 13's out there? That's G 13 until you get the
hang of it this coming weekend.

Have a great time.

We heard from our son (Jacob, 2002, H-15) around 1630 on Sunday. The
schedule showed him calling at 1400 on Saturday. Honestly, after the
hour and a half passed, we just assumed something was up and that he
would either get a hold of us, or we'd see him next Friday. From his
perspective, he didn't even know there was a schedule, so he had no sense
of late/early.

All is well .... sprained ankle healed up, looking forward to company
basketball championship one evening this week where the whole regiment
comes to cheer (this would be far more than ever showed for his high
school games!), and the motivational speakers, and the Orioles trip this
week. He's Hotel company, so it's not real clear how they will divide
up for the ball game; evidently not as neatly as just by 15/16 platoons.

Got his marksman ribbons, but missed on sharpshooter .... ("not bad for
a kid who's parents wouldn't even let me make my legos into weapons!")

Got his sponsor family today ... a couple from Arnold (?) who have no
kids; he will be there only mid. He has made a friend in the brigade
who is from Anapolis, and thinks that will be nice for him as well.

Thanks for the zip lock bag tip. We had been sending our goodies in the
rubbermaid containers, packed in a shoe box. It has worked real well,
and he has appreciated it.

He says ...."I've got so much to tell you ..." and we will be so happy
to listen.

How will he have changed? It's time for us to be coming to grips with
that ... because this experience must surely change him ... confidence,
pride, commitment. We are so proud of all these young men and women ....
plebes and detailers!!

We will arrive at USNA mid thursday afternoon (can't get sports/work
schedules to free us earlier) .. and plan to be out there for PEP early.

Thank you so much, especially you parents of upper mids. Your
encouragement and sharing has gotten us off on the right foot. We hope
to pass it on one day!

The USNA-NET has been wonderful ... and we hope it grows!

Joyous travels, plebe parents. Hope to see some of you there. We'll be
wearing our Ohio Parent's Club Badges .....

Subject: usna-net: Plebe parents who live apart

Dear parents,
Some of you couldn't understand why you weren't getting mailings regarding
your plebes.
If you have parents living separately, the Academy database can only
accommodate one primary parent. Don't view this as a 'slight'. I work in an
admissions office of a private school, and my database is very limiting also
(it's that computer software thing).

One of our plebe parents has been persistent in getting to the bottom of the
problem. The following is what she found out. (If you know of any of these
situations going on right now and you have a parents club, please contact a
club officer and clue them in).

Re: dealing with plebes who have parents living apart -- both of whom are
actively involved in parenting --

The USNA midshipmen database is structured only for one primary parent
address (holds a designated primary parent or both parents living
together...but only one address/number). Until the database format can be
modified (quite an undertaking), Martha Blair has been dealing with this by
having the plebes fill out a "2d parent address" form during I-Day.
HOWEVER, this past I-Day, apparently due to Martha's illness and absence,
this was not done. SO.... all plebes with parents living apart are in the
same boat: no mailings from USNA to one of the two parents.
Martha said that between now and about end-September, she
will contact company officers to have plebes fill out these forms, make
additions to her lists (as authorized by plebes) and send a copy to Babs
Miller for her own database.

As you'll note, the plebes must give permission for the duplicate mailings.

Another item that is only slightly related is that the plebes have to sign
forms as to how they want their grades handled. As parents, we're used to
receiving those high school grades.
Well most of these kids are now over the legal age of 18. If they don't fill
out the forms correctly, you will not see their grades.
This can create all kinds of problems. One scenario was that a mid was being
separated due to academics and his family didn't have any idea.
The plebes may have already signed the forms on I-Day, but they can always
change it. You might want to actually discuss this grade reporting issue with
your plebe this parents weekend and explain why your being informed is
important. This is not like a 'regular' college where they can flunk out and
return the next semester. Also as parents, you can be supportive in keeping
them aimed in the right direction, encouraging extra instruction (EI) etc.

have a good time.....

The Brigade of Midn used to be at 4,500 midn. Has since been mandated by law
(also applies to other services academies) to a year end strength of 4,000
beginning the first day of academic classes.. With 4,500 mids, there were also
36 companies compared to 30 now. Company 35-36 were S Co. (Sierra Co). The next
letter in the alphabet was T (tango) and so you were assigned to Tango Company if
you decided that USNA was not for you. That lingo has stayed!

O.K... Tango Co. That's a (welcome) clear-cut, rational, historically
grounded etiology for the phrase.
Or... (in the mind of a tortured plebe parent, so-o close to PPW) Let's
see...Tango Co. ... context of separation from NA ... 'it takes 2 to tango'
... we know the Academy's 110% supporting each of these kids ... so ...
ergo, these must be mids who have decided they don't want to 'tango'.

No...you are certainly NOT the only plebe family not to hear from your mid's
sponsor. Moi, aussi. I am reassured, however, by Gus's telling us in last
phone call that he has a sponsor -- Marine Major who lives on the Yard. I
believe we will be afforded an opportunity to connect with sponsors/sponsor
families at PPW. (If not, I will respectfully go a-looking...)
Note--to Pam Bombach--this may be another lapse related to the 'one-parent
address problem' in the database... Please check with sponsors/Babs Miller
to learn if THEY, too, get their parent info only from (the temporarily
crimped) USNA database.
See you on and about the Yard...although I think, at the outset, we will
have eyes only for our mids! Lane.

Emily,
We did not hear from our son's sponsor family until the first semester was
almost over. In fact it might not have been until the spring. Our son however
was out to their house quite a few times. He told me about the family and what
they had provided to him. (His sponsor family has 3 children of their own,
7,15,17, and the dad is a Navy Captain, USNA '74).

As the plebe mom, I had wanted to get the sponsor thing going for him during
that plebe summer, but I restrained myself and forced myself to realize that
he had to make this connection-not me--these were to be his family. This was
now his 'life', not mom arranging things for him.

Since the beginning, the sponsor family has been a wonderful constant in my
mid's life. I sent them a basket at Christmas that plebe year thanking them
for caring so much for our son. After Herndon in the spring, we took them to
dinner near their home in Severna Park. Since then we are in regular
communication by email.

Our mid has relied on his sponsor family for rest, food, transportation,
shelter, storage, logistical support, family interactions and wonderful
insights into the academy and the military in general. They have been another
unexpected bonus of the USNA experience.

Remind your plebe to make the contact, they will receive the sponsor names and
phone number. Also, you might encourage them to get the call made, but you
can't do it for them. The mid has to call the sponsor because the sponsor
can't call in and reach a plebe.

Hi Dolf..
Reverse your tables below...1-2 = A co. (Skip the letter J)

Next, understand that the alphabetic names for companies are only used during the
summer transition. They do not exist after plebe summer. Their platoons numbers
become their actual company numbers during the academic year.

Not quite sure, will research, but I believe , that the reason there is also no
"J" Co. was in honor of that Company being wiped out in some battle. Anyway, when
the brigade was at 4,500 there were 36 companies during the academic year. Now,
the brigade size is at 4,000 and 30 companies.

So, when there were 36 companies (1-2= Alpha Co. 3-4= Bravo etc.) 35-36 = Sierra
Co.
The drop out company then became Tango Co. and the term still exists today even
though the summer companies now only go up to Papa Co (29-30)

Brigade is also made up of two regiments broken down into 6 Battalions of 5 co's
each for a total of 30 co's. First Regiment is (Port- Co's 1-15 ) and Second
Regiment is( Starboard Co's16-30 ).
1st Battalion is co's 1-5; 2nd Battalion is co's 6-10 etc. Probably more than you
want know but that's how it works.
Hope this helps.

Officially, Plebes are not allowed to use phones at the ball game.. If they do and
are caught, would result in disciplinary action. All the Midn were issued small
fans. Yes, they do help! As far as courses go, the Midn have been notified of
placement/validation of courses if any but actual schedules will not be done until
computer issue (Aug 13-14?) and the move academic year room assignments.
All of the Midn have been assigned sponsors and have been given their numbers to
call and introduce themselves.

I've had many requests for the service that I used. It is called Auto
Driveaway. It is a national company with local offices -- there is one
in the Pittsburgh area. I paid $325 to have the car driven from my home
to C-Springs -- they met my daughter at her sponsor's home. They will
also transport by truck but it was around $900. I was very satisfied
with the service -- it arrived on time and in good condition. And,
please note, I have no financial interest in this company! Again, my
daughter and I are happy it is there and that I didn't have to spend 3
days in a car!

Does anyone know what the leave schedule is (was or will likely be) for
plebe's on Labor Day weekend As a Lutheran minister weekend travel is
going to be very difficult for me ... trying to be back for Sunday
morning and limited weekends off. But if they'll have leave on Labor
Day monday, I could go over Sunday after worship and visit with him
Sunday night and monday. All advice appreciated..

Otherwise, it's his mother making the trip ... and my next visit on
Thanksgiving.

And .... do I understand right that our plebe mid will be able to stay
with us overnight (barring restrictions, etc) saturday at the Army/Navy
Game? When and where will he likely need to report when leave is over?

Thanks all ..

Got home at about 0300 from the most remarkable, emotional weekend.

Jake is fine! About 8 pounds lighter ... but looking good in the white
uniforms.

His experience has been good ... very difficult but filled with purpose
and, to our surprise, a great deal of humor! We laid on the hotel bed
and laughed till we cried over some of the crazy things they did and were
subjected to.

Positives included: getting there early on Thursday to rest and do mid
store calculator things; finding the Bells in the dark for PEP and
finding "our" mid in the mass of well conditioned bodies; good weather
for the formal parades, worship at the Chapel, sunday lunch at the
Officer & Faculty Club was perfect and he loved it, being downtown on
Saturday night with all those parents and mids and realizing that we're
not alone; standing on "his favorite place" and knowing that he'll be
there often thinking and praying, taking so many pictures; praying
together on Sunday in the parking lot amidst all the tears (I day we
tried, but only tears came out), the Alvin and the chipmunk Christmas
music ("Theodore, why aren't you smiling?!), seeing familiar faces from
central Ohio, hearing Jake say "I know I made the right decision, it's
hard but I want to be here," touring the YP so we know what that will be
like, and seeing his room. And, I just love those flyovers!

Negatives included: seeing his room (what a pit ... even though clean
and well stowed!), meeting his anguished roommates and parents who will
consider separation, the Holiday Inn (final straw was an unwillingness to
allow us to extend stay through the afternoon for even a few hours),
cash flow, our son's five messages on sponsor's voice mail with no reply,
and the mass emotions as Sunday liberty ended. Real men and women most
definitely do cry ... it was hard for us, and gutwrenching to watch
others.

How do we put this all into words? We can't, but you mostly likely
understand since you've been there.

Now .... how many days till Thanksgving?

I would imagine that all of us parents of Plebes are decompressing. I
was exhausted from the weekend -- we were active but every time my son
came close to a bed, we lost him for a few hours! Another favorite
pastime was spending time in the shower -- we stayed at a B&B and there
were 4 families with Plebes -- I have a feeling that the innkeeper's
water bill will spike for this weekend!

My son GAINED weight -- that might be a sad commentary on my cooking!
He said that he was always hungry -- I had sent him lots of care
packages -- he said that he didn't always have time to eat the food in
them!

We also laughed at his stories -- it was reassuring to me that he has
retained his sense of humor -- I think that all of the Plebes need to
find humor in their lives -- it keeps them sane -- and it will also make
for fun class reunions in the future!

I think my hair got singed during the flyby! USAFA flybys tend to be
high because of either Colorado Springs regulations or because the glass
blew out of the press box one time -- my feeling is that the Navy's
flybys are that low because Navy pilots are crazy -- and I say this as
the wife of a former Naval aviator! It was great -- my daughter at
USAFA is envious -- she wishes that she were there to share in the flyby
excitement -- or fright, as the case might be!

Greetings from Midshippers!
Normal procedure for liberty when holiday falls on a Monday is town
liberty on Sat & Sun but only yard(campus) liberty on Monday for plebes.
Army Navy liberty could change but if weekend/overnight granted, would
have to report back by Sunday, evening meal formation. Will verify if
otherwise.

After an 18 hour drive to our home we are back and I would like to refect
on the weekend for a moment.
As everyone else the going from place to place looking in the face of
every Plebe thinking "Is that MINE?" I am pretty tired and really happy
when I did spot mine. Of course he knew were we were as we were the ones
with the 2 purple balloons. That was our way of letting him know WE WERE
THERE!! The first hug was awsome and immediatly followed by me touching
his knee and asking "What's WRONG with your knee?!" The knee brace I
spotted wasn't on there when he left 6 long weeks ago! "Just tendonitis,
Mom, I'm fine!" The entire weekend was like being in a dream or a movie
set and I want to go back, RIGHT NOW!! But the one thing that stands out
in my mind the most was the last hour we spent together. As many others
we too needed to check out of the hotel room before Mass on Sunday, so we
had no where to go to spend time together. We went to lunch after noon
Formation and then to Barnes and Nobels for Starbucks coffee while we
waited for the 1 hour photo to develop the pics. The jets didn't ruin the
camera afterall! After getting the pictures Brad said lets got to the
Yard I want to go somewhere. We parked and entered Memorial Hall (side
doors ONLY) and up the ladder we went. Brad showed us several displays
and then we sat at the chairs and that is when Brad began to speak of all
the reasons "why" he is there. How those in that Hall gave their lives
for his freedom and future and how he will be there for those both past
and present. He spoke with the age and wisdom of a 70 year old man who
has been is 3 wars! I was truly impressed. Until that point my son was
the same son I hugged at the airport, a little thinner, looking GREAT in
white, still smiling, still wanting Big Macs but now so much older!
I have to say the entire Yard drips with pride and honor as does my 18
year old son.
As we had a tearful goodbye Brad hugged his little brother and Cody said
"Bye Aught 2, love ya!" Brad said " I love you Aught 7!" Yes we too might
have 2 sons from this wonderful place. With that Brad entered Mother B,
wiped a tear with the "ammo" I placed in his pocket (add ammo to the Mid
Family Jargon book), turned sharply right, "BEAT ARMY"!!
I hope everyone can look and the pride and honor the USNA has placed in
the hearts of our mids and use that to get though these very long weeks
and years. I cry for the pride I feel and the contentment of knowing my
son made the right choice.

Greetings!!

This is the first time I have written, but I have learned alot by reading
everyone else's messages. I gather that we are a little different from most
of the other parents writing. My son went for two years to New Mexico
Military Instititute before he was accepted to the Academy, so not only is
he a little older (20) but I am a little, and I do mean little, bit use to
him being away from home. I still miss him like crazy, but am so proud of
him for sticking to his dream.

I so enjoyed the week-end. Nate has lost about 10 lbs. but does he look
great!!! He didn't want to stop at all this week-end. We went to a movie,
Baltimore (inner Harbor) twice and D.C. once. I'm exhausted. We are not
used to the humidity so that took some getting used to. Nate had written
and spoken of how beautiful is Annapolis and he wasn't wrong. I've always
known I was an easterner at heart.

Anyway, I would like to go back for another visit before the holidays and am
trying to find the most opportune time. Do the plebes get Columbus day off
and if so, would they have town liberty on both Sat and Sun? I am familiar
with how popular that week-end is in the east but I think that might be a
great time for us to go. Any help or advice??

We are now busy getting ready for son number 2 to go away to college for the
first time (August 20 to Southern Utah University). It is certainly
different getting him ready.

Thank you for all the input,

Diane Brown (Nate Bastar 02)

Oct 9-11 is good for the mids but bad for parents trying to find a hotel =
room. There is a big boat/sailing show?? in Annapolis that weekend. I =
did find a room at the Days Inn (Riva Road) for $129 per night.

Greetings from Midshippers...you are almost right. I forgot that is
also the annual BOAT SHOW WEEKEND, however, there are still rooms
available but usually at a three night minimum(Friday, Sat & Sun and a
premium price>>about $159/night.
As a service to parent's and Midn we try to hold rooms around town on a
regular basis. Most at reduced rates when possible, depending on
weekends desired and demand. Will be glad to assist !

Sorry, Hefners, no word on phone calls.

But we got an email from Jake this afternoon ... 1445. Said he has just
gotten it up and running ... and sent us a very brief update. He has
made his room change, and has enjoyed a pleasant week. Said they had a
banquet, and he made the holocaust trip. He also noted his detailers are
preparing them for the onslaught of the brigade next week.

Hope you all here on the e-mail in the near future. We sent him a note
back around 1800 and at 2300 haven't heard. Not expecting that quick of
a turnaround ever, but it will be fun to see how it actually works.

Again, thanks friends.

keep in mind that as the brigade reforms, there will be huge traffic on the
email outfit.

i don't remember the exact number, maybe 250,000 per day, at least it is
large. sometimes your email turn around will be seconds or minutes,
sometimes in days. don't read anything into it. just enjoy the access with
the plebes.

a word to the wise, be careful what you put into the email messages.

is moved into a new room and has 2 roommates now instead of 1. He said =
the upper classmen are impressed with the Plebe's new computers. I have =
Internet phone software installed on my PC and am taking Kris a copy =
when I go over next week. I have to be in Washington on business Monday =
and Tuesday, Aug 24-25 so my husband and I are going over early on =
Saturday and stay in Annapolis so we can see Kris.

Kris has phone cards from Sam's Club that are about .16 cents per call =
anytime day or night. Does anyone have a cheaper solution? The phone =
cards come in 120 or 500 minutes. You dial an 800 number, type in your =
card number, and then the number you are calling. Not too bad but a =
direct call would be better. The 800 number lines from ATT are .25 =
cents per call. =20

Time to send his e-mail address to family and friends. =20

received the following from my son, you may be interested.

Brigade,

Please read this message if you are thinking about purchasing a new
cellular/wireless phone contract or are about to come up on the end of
your existing contract. This message applies to the Brigade of
Midshipmen, as well as any military or civilian faculty and staff. The
products covered in this message are available to any authorized users of
the Brigade Services Division facilities (USNA Store, Tailor Shop, Barber
Shop, Cobbler Shop, Omega World Travel office).

First of all, welcome back from what I hope was a great summer. This
message is being sent to inform you about a new cellular phone contract
that was just awarded by the Brigade Services Division earlier today.
This contract will be structured similar to the Omega Travel contract,
which is also administered by the Brigade Services Division.

We have selected Sprint PCS as the "authorized" or "preferred" provider of
cellular/wireless services for the Brigade. Like the Omega contract, you
are not required to use this company for your cellular services. However,
we have negotiated a contract that should provide you with a better
overall value than what you could find on your own as an individual
consumer. Sprint PCS is an innovator in the digital/PCS technology and has
a superior product to offer its customers.

Since the contract was just awarded today, the company will not be in a
position to sign up new customers for a few more weeks. The intitial
setup process will take no longer than 1 month, but should be completed
sooner. Keep your eyes open for additional e-mail messages, flyers, and
other informational displays. We will ensure that company representatives
will be available during the initial period, as I'm sure there will be
many questions about the service they are offering.

Please let me know if you have any questions about this contract. Again,
you are highly encouraged to delay negotiating a cellular/digital phone
contract until you have had a chance to review the offerings covered by
this contract.
R,
LT Brian Lester

MEMORIAL HALL by, Cody Patterson Sunday August 9, 1998

I look at the great building, mouth dropped open. Little boys and girls
called this building the big building. The elderly USNA grads called it
their classroom. My brother and I called this building Memorial Hall.
I walked up a big flight of stairs and walked in the right door. I looked
at the right and left walls. They were covered with little displays.

I walked up one more giant flight of stairs. As I entered the top level,
my thoughts were of wow and wonder. Two chandeleirs hang from the
ceiling. I looked all around and saw paintings and bronze sculptures of
many Naval heros. I read each and every story about the Navy men,
commanders, Commodores, Admirals...

Not all Navy men have to be high ranking to be heroic. Records of who
died before and after graduating from the Academy. From that point on and
every single second and minute, I know what I want to do. Go to the USNA!

Just got a U3 ( UNEXPECTED & UNSCHEDULED & UNLIMITED) phone call from Gus.
What a delight...to pick up the phone and hear his voice, unhurried and
relatively unhassled. He also sent e-mail this evening. Says they have a
bit of a 'rest' while the brigade completes reform, although no liberty
until next weekend (IFF they pass their MAJOR room inspection....interesting
twist to prevent undue hassling from upperclassmen: the upperclassmen don't
get leave unless the plebes earn theirs!)

It's wonderful to read impressions, anecdotes from PPW. I'll put ours on
tomorrow, when more time. Would love to hear more.

Dolly (I feel like I know you by now): You asked for ideas for "servicing
mids": How about this?
MOVIE PACKAGE(s) -- excursion for (1), (2), ... (squad) to go to the
movies...Saturday afternoon matinee/Saturday evening...let's say to the
Harbor 9 (or whatever it's called, in the Annapolis Mall). Would include:
cab/van there and back, passes for N midshipmen to the movie of their
choice, scrip good for med. popcorn and med. drink...
Might be able to set it up with Harbor 9 management, van service which
contracts with Loew's might be accommodating (they seemed very nice)....

I'm going to post this also to USNA Net for more feedback/ideas. Many
thanks for helping us keep wind in their sails.

Subject: usna-net: EMAIL

Hi everyone. Brad (19th) called at 9:30AM Sunday. He sid he could talk
as long as he wanted, but there were many in line behind him, so he kept
it short. He sent the first email on Saturday morning around 10AM CDT.
His biggest news was that he MADE the Men's Glee Club. He was surprised
since there were only 8 openings for Tenor 2's. He has moved into the 4th
wing and has 2 new roommates, one from Alaska and one from Chicago. He
still seems VERY happy and is looking forward to Glee Club practice
tonight. He is still practicing baseball, I assume. He hasn't talked
about baseball much since the moving, email and Glee Club is what is new
at the moment. WOW, email!! He has sent probably 30 emails now. They
are very short, but I very much LOVED getting a" goodnight" email last
night and a "good morning" email today. He even had time to answer Cody's
(brother age 13) computer problem email. I know it is hard to describe to
those who are not used to emailing, but you can really tell HOW things are
going by email. My Mom (she lives in Tampa, Florida) and I email every
day. Since Brad left another Plebe Mom and I have been emailing
regularly. I also email with a Wyoming Dad and a Kansas City Dad on a
regular basis. Just email what you think and feel and before long it
really will feel just like talking!! Happy 2002 Families and GO NAVY!!!!

Thanks! I used always watch about hurricanes and hope they didn't go to
the gulf side of Florida because my parent's live in Tampa, but now I want
them to go to somewhere very FAR away!! My son is on the East coast, USNA
and my parents are still on the gulf! Maybe the hurricanes could go to
Afghanastan!! Nancy

now running properly. The cause of the difficulty is currently under
investigation.

My thanks to two members who sent "heads up" messages yesterday which
initiated the search for and ultimate correction of the problem. PLEASE,
everyone, don't hesitate to contact me directly if you see something which
appears to be out of order. "We can't fix what we don't know is broken!"

The following was copied from the West Point lists - I think it's good
information for us too, especially for plebes who prefer to not leave the
"safety" of their room to use a pay phone <grin>, as well as a $$ saver. We
have AOL with the Instant Message feature so it didn't occur to me before that
some of you might be missing out on a great time with your son/daughter:

<<In case some of you are not aware of some of the ways you can use your
computer, you can talk to your plebe in "real time" by downloading either
ICQ or AOL Instant messenger. I don't use AOL as my server, but I do
use their FREE Instant messenger. You and your cadet can download it, and
it works with any server. I talk to my plebe every day for a short period
of time "live". It's much better than e-mail. We just love meeting up with
her at our appointed time, and hearing about her day. Now, her
grandparents meet her at the same time.. .it's a bit of a three ring circus,
but we have a ball !!

Subject: usna-net: Voice on Internet - Allowed?

Fellow USNA-NET Members,

A recent message forwarded some information regarding voice communication over
the internet which had been broadcast on the West Point listserver. The
message was a good one and the information can be very useful. However, I am
currently trying to explore whether this use of the internet fits within those
allowed by DOIM, the USMA computer management.

As you can imagine, there can be a significant bandwidth consumption issue
with large numbers of cadets (midshipmen) using voice and possibly even video
capabilities which are now available. Bandwidth costs money and there is a
finite capacity on existing lines. Also, there is the issue of restriction of
phone traffic for the first year students to be considered.

I am exploring this issue with the USMA folks and wonder if anyone would like
to do the same with the USNA computer staff. One of the things that we
absolutely DO NOT want to do is to encourage any actions by ourselves or our
children which is in any way in conflict with the Academy regulations.

If you have knowledge of this issue or are willing to work on it, please send
me an E-Mail directly.

Best regards,

Dolf

things to be concerned about: the safety of our country, the hurricane
that is going to hit the East coast somewhere, floods in Texas and most
importantly the status of our Mids/Plebes. Lets send positive message to
this resource. It is supposed to be here to help us all cope with a
difficult 4 years and to help us to stay informed. It is not to a
"complaint board". Thanks and everyone, please have a wonderful day and
BEAT ARMY!!!

I have a "site" bookmarked that I visit frequently, it is the weather
station at the Naval Academy. It gives current weather updated
every few minutes 24 hours a day. They have added a "click" for hurricane
Bonnie. The site is at:
                         http://aws.com/cgi-win/wx.exe?annps

I personally find the details of the weather interesting. You will know
the kind of day/week your Mid is having as far as weather is concerned.
Something to talk about, the weather! :)

Thank you so much for the information regarding sites to track Hurricane
Bonnie.

I haven't heard from my mid because his computer is down, but I am wondering
if anyone has heard if the Yard is preparing in any way because of Hurricane
Bonnie approaching?

Also, as parent's of midshipmen we also have a prayer-net that is a similar
site to this one. Prayers for our mid's are received and then sent out over
email to those that have requested to be a part of prayer-net. If anyone is
interested in becoming a part of the USNA-USMA Prayer-net just let me know
and I will get back to you with the necessary email information. My email
address is menziesw@aol.com
I have already sent in a request for safety for all the mids at the
Yard--prayer is one thing I can do as a mom on the west coast for my son on
the east coast!

Ocean City under hurricane watch as storm rolls our way=20
     _________________________________________________________________
  =20
   By: LAURA GREEN, Staff Writer
     _________________________________________________________________
  =20
A hurricane watch was declared this morning for Ocean City, and may be
extended to Anne Arundel County later today.
  =20
The watch -- signifying a threat of hurricane conditions within 24 to
36 hours -- was called for the Atlantic coast, from the Virginia-North
Carolina border to Cape Henlopen, Del., said Butch Kinerney of the
   Maryland Emergency Management Agency.
  =20
Officials said the watch could be expanded later today to possibly
include the county and other parts of Maryland.
  =20
But Mr. Kinerney cautioned that it is too soon to tell where Hurricane
Bonnie will go. The storm, which has begun to speed up, could move
   anywhere at this point.
  =20
"It could track more up the ocean side, or it could track up the
   (Chesapeake) Bay," he said.
  =20
The 400-mile-wide storm, packing 115-mph winds, was wobbling toward
the Eastern Seaboard this morning. It was expected to make landfall in
   the Carolinas.
  =20
Mr. Kinerney advised residents to monitor the hurricane's progress.
  =20
"Certainly, people in Anne Arundel County should watch this storm,
especially those who live on the water's edge."
  =20
Bracing for any impact from the storm, the Naval Academy this morning
moved its sailboats not being used for training to safer moorings in
Round Bay, academy spokesman Elizabeth Kucik said.
  =20
Officials were to decide whether to move larger training sailboats
   this afternoon, she said.
  =20
By tomorrow afternoon or evening, Mr. Kinerney said the Annapolis area
   could see some rain.
  =20
"Our best guess it that it's going to give us some showers at the very
   least," he said.
  =20
Meanwhile, Ocean City police were taking a cautious approach.
  =20
High surf, strong waves and rip tides already being generated by
Bonnie have led to warnings for swimmers.
  =20
"It is creating some hazardous surf conditions," said Jay Hancock,
police spokesman. "If you are on the beach, stay near guard stands."
  =20
John Billet, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in
Sterling, Va., said the hurricane isn't expected to cause any weather
   change today.
  =20
Today was expected to be the last day this week with temperatures in
the mid- to upper 90s, as relief should come quickly, Mr. Billet said.
  =20
  =20
Temperatures in the upper 80s are expected tomorrow with a weak cold
front arriving on Thursday, bringing temperatures in the 80s
   throughout the weekend.
  =20
Once again, the Maryland Department of the Environment asked residents
to limit outdoor activity. The state agency declared a Code Orange for
today, with moderately unhealthy air quality.
  =20
The Baltimore metropolitan area's maximum ground level ozone
concentration yesterday was found in central Anne Arundel County.
  =20
Residents are asked to wait until dusk to fuel cars, avoid cutting
grass with gas-powered lawn mowers and carpool when possible.----
  =20
The Associated Press contributed to this story.

Hi, We just go back tonight from Washington, DC. We spent the day with =
Kris on Saturday (had lunch with his sponsor family) and stayed on the =
yard with him all day Sunday. Monday night we drove over from Bethesda =
and had dinner with him at the Dry Dock and went to Nimitz with him to =
study! Lots of fun. We are going back for Labor Day. I am involved in =
a special project and will also be in Baltimore quite a bit in September =
so I am hoping to pop down to the Academy whenever Kris has free time. =
He is doing great and is now on the Karate team. Their first practice =
is this Thursday. The team attends our own Tae Kwon Do Tournament in =
Charleston WV in February!!!=20

A great place to go for fun if they drop the 22 mile restriction is =
"Dave and Buster's" at the White Flint Mall in Bethesda (about 40-45 =
minute trip). It is great fun for the kids and adults! VIDEO =
everything!!!!! Good food, too. You can make a day of it. We went =
there during PPW and it was a great stress reliever for Kris.

More tomorrow. I have to work in the morning!

Are many Plebe parents going to be in Annapolis for Labor Day Weekend??
There is a JV football game on Sunday, just in case you are looking for
something to do! My daughter is coming in from the Air Force Academy
for the occasion. A friend of mine who has a junior said that it is a
good weekend to be there because the Plebes have 2 days where they can
be out late.

Looking forward to meeting all of us who survived Plebe Summer!
