There's a formal parade planned for today (I know one midshipman who's hoping
it's rained out though! It was raining this AM when he called), along with a
Pep Rally on the City Dock, and a Glee Club Concert in Alumni Hall @ 20:30.
And we're looking forward to our first home football game tomorrow night
hosting Kent State.

We've enjoyed hearing about the fun and crazy "college" things going on there
with the commencement of football season.

Our plebes ALWAYS have to bet on the outcome, and ALWAYS for Navy to win
(complete with an appropriately ill-guessed point span of course! :) For the
Wake Forest game, Troy had to keep moving his win margin up, and up, until he
arrived at winning by 30. The stake was his hair, so it was a lose/lose
situation, and he was Bic'd........shaved bald. He's enjoying the craziness
of it all. One guy had to imitate a bird all day, flying around. Another had
to sit in a fountain in a speedo. And they carried the Supe around on his
chair; it's been a great time of fellowship and comraderie.

Tonight is the recon mission - over the wall! I said what! He said Mom!
It's OK! (during football season, anyway). The whole squad goes; they hang
their sheet poster (who's sheet is sacrificed?) in town etc. and rendevous
somewhere. Not much sleep, but definitely the making of good memories!

Firstie parents - enjoy your special weekend!

GO NAVY!! BEAT ARMY!! (AND KENT STATE TOMORROW!)

I think the spirit of the list has been somewhat dampened by two =

We just returned from the wonderful glee club concert. Not only did they
mids sing the traditional Navy songs, classical, and religious pieces, but
they sang show tunes (Les Miserables), barbershop quartet numbers, and
"Andrew Sisters" oldies. Fabulous evening!

Subject: usna-net: re: What HAS happened to the list?

Our list has been very quiet, but it's partly because of our direct
communication now with our kids. We get straight answers to our questions
from them, and we haven't "needed" one another as much. I still enjoy hearing
feedback about the happenings tho, and discovered facts I may have missed.
That's especially nice for the families whose student isn't very
communicative. I also expect that as the stress builds and we encounter new
trials with them, we'll be drawing on the strength of this list more heavily
again. Hopefully we'll have new successes to share as well.

I'm compelled to make another commentary <grin>. The "personality" of our
list needs to remain an information source. For us chattier people we will
want to communicate and debate (especially debating) by direct e-mail outside
of the list as we have in the past. I believe that's what Dolf was trying to
direct when he introduced the proposed mission statement. This list is made
up of more than a group of Moms who want to talk over coffee; many
subscribers don't want to hear us yakking, nor do they have the time to filter
through our commentaries and opinion postings (which is what I'm doing here
<GRIN>). It just can get to be overwhelming and too time consuming. We've
already seen a member (Kent) sign off and unsubscribe because we were
developing into a chat room of sorts. A sub-email group, if you will, is a
good solution. And we already have that - right? Lane, Courtni, Anita, Deb,
Nancy, Patti - and you too Dan, Pam & Janet! Ok, I'm off my soap box.

We're personally having big computer problems here, and are unable to get to
most internet sites. If anyone (whoever's first) would have the time to copy
and post news stories found, etc. that would add some interest to our net and
help those who haven't had/taken time or are unable to scout them out. I
would guess there are others who have e-mail but not internet access, too.
The Capital had an interesting story today about the marching route to the
stadium for football games. It's a small thing, but everything about my mid
interests me!

We sure would like to hear more inside "gouge" from Maryland area parents.
You folks have the opportunity to be our "eyes". We'd love to hear about the
concerts, games, parades & other events you get to attend. West Point has a
photographer, Allen Borack, who frequently posts visual descriptions for the
list - they're great! I contacted Larry Thornton of Thorton Studios (our
plebe video company) to see if he was interested in doing the same for Navy,
but it hasn't come to pass yet.

Parent Clubs - when you enhance your sites, please let us know! We'd love to
visit and see what you've done.

Midshippers - thanks for your informational broadcasts, too.

And Dolf, many thanks to you for the gift of this excellent and cherished
support system you share with your friends at NAVY. May it flourish and grow
up healthy.
P.S. The checks in the mail - putting my money where my mouth is! (=o)

Subject: usna-net: Need for a "Chatty" Listserver?

Fellow USNA-NET Members,

Some recent correspondence has discussed our listserver environment. Believe
me, I look forward to having a collegial support network . . . and believe
that one is developing. However, I have seen what happens in a cyber-
environment as the volume grows. Problems can / will develop because people
are people . . . and they each have significantly different perspectives.
Hence the reason for our current configuration / rule proposals.

I think that it is important to understand not only today's environment but
also to set the stage for substantial future membership growth. Having lived
through difficult situations with other listservers, it seems to me that the
following bedrock principles should be observed for USNA-NET:

1/ Personal attack and criticism of USNA administration are out.
2/ Commercial advertising must be controlled.
3/ Focus should be on information, not chat.

Does anyone disagree with the above . . . with the exception of 3/ as
discussed below?

I can certainly understand that there is a desire on the part of some members
to create a "chatty" environment. Others want "just the facts." This dilema
could be solved by creation of a second listserver. The trade off that comes
with multiple lists; however, is that some information will, by definition,
not reach those who do not participate in both nets.

If this group feels that a more open environment should be created, I'll be
glad to set up a second, optional, listserver. Let's call it USNA-CHAT. The
first 2 rules above should still be operative for this net. However, of
course, the third would not be relevant. For starters, the message reply
feature would go back to the full list.

Is there any problem with the above suggestions?

I want to help create an environment which enables cyber-support for all
academy parents. However, having seen the problems that come with
unconstrained communication, I feel that **some** boundaries need to be
established **well** before serious problems develop.

Assuming that everyone is in agreement about establishment of USNA-CHAT, I'll
proceed to get it set up and include all of the current USNA-NET members. Of
course, anyone would be free to unsubscribe from USNA-CHAT if that envronment
was not wanted.

Please let us all know your thoughts on this issue by sending a broadcast to
usna-net@navy-usna.org!

BTW, I'd like to have some volunteers to assist me in co-moderating this new
list. I suspect that the volume will soon surpass my ability / desire to keep
up with it all! <grin>

Best regards,

Dolf

I really thought things were going just fine. I really felt things were
quiet because there wasn't anything BIG going on. I have received tiny
emails from my Mid but they are always the same, "busy, studying, heading
to practice, heading to class etc". I enjoy hearing about the other
things that are going on like the Pep Rally's, the recon mission(?) last
night and the nutty stuff surrounding the bets on the football games. I
never felt like the info had been "chatty", but hey that's just my
opinion.

Following along with Sam's suggestions that Maryland folks provide more
news-type information, I'd be more than happy to do my part. I read almost
all the on-line newspapers looking for Mid news. Anything I find, I'll pass
along now. If you have any specific requests for info, feel free to ask. I
can add your topics to my list while I'm surfing.

Also, we purchased the 3-ticket subscription to the Navy games and will
attend this evening. I'm not a football fan, but I'll post mid-mom kind of
info when I return. I'm looking forward to seeing the march-over--should be
quite a sight as 4000 mids all dressed in white fill Taylor Street on the
way to the stadium.

Well Said! I have been on a special project for a couple of weeks so I =
haven't had time to keep up. In fact, I was in Washington and could not =
get away to visit Annapolis...that's how tight my schedule has been. I =
enjoy the info from the other parents and hope that it continues =
throughout the entire 4 years. It has been a real source of support, =
especially during Plebe summer. I am looking forward to giving new =
Plebe parents my support next summer!!! =20

I do communicate with my son everyday thru e-mail or ICQ and I even have =
an 800 number now. He has lots of options to "phone home." I have =
been working with a young woman who graduated from the Air Force Academy =
and she thinks we are truly fortunate to have the Internet for =
commuications. She could only imagine how it would have made life =
easier for her and her family while she was at the Academy, and she only =
graduated in 93! We've come a long way!

Keep up the news and the faith! =20

Our list has been very quiet, but it's partly because of our direct
communication now with our kids. We get straight answers to our =
questions
from them, and we haven't "needed" one another as much. I still enjoy =
hearing
feedback about the happenings tho, and discovered facts I may have =
missed.
That's especially nice for the families whose student isn't very
communicative. I also expect that as the stress builds and we encounter =
new
trials with them, we'll be drawing on the strength of this list more =
heavily
again. Hopefully we'll have new successes to share as well.

I'm compelled to make another commentary <grin>. The "personality" of =
our
list needs to remain an information source. For us chattier people we =
will
want to communicate and debate (especially debating) by direct e-mail =
outside
of the list as we have in the past. I believe that's what Dolf was =
trying to
direct when he introduced the proposed mission statement. This list is =
made
up of more than a group of Moms who want to talk over coffee; many
subscribers don't want to hear us yakking, nor do they have the time to =
filter
through our commentaries and opinion postings (which is what I'm doing =
here
<GRIN>). It just can get to be overwhelming and too time consuming. =
We've
already seen a member (Kent) sign off and unsubscribe because we were
developing into a chat room of sorts. A sub-email group, if you will, =
is a
good solution. And we already have that - right? Lane, Courtni, Anita, =
Deb,
Nancy, Patti - and you too Dan, Pam & Janet! Ok, I'm off my soap box. =20

We're personally having big computer problems here, and are unable to =
get to
most internet sites. If anyone (whoever's first) would have the time =
to copy
and post news stories found, etc. that would add some interest to our =
net and
help those who haven't had/taken time or are unable to scout them out. =
I
would guess there are others who have e-mail but not internet access, =
too.
The Capital had an interesting story today about the marching route to =
the
stadium for football games. It's a small thing, but everything about my =
mid
interests me!

We sure would like to hear more inside "gouge" from Maryland area =
parents.
You folks have the opportunity to be our "eyes". We'd love to hear =
about the
concerts, games, parades & other events you get to attend. West Point =
has a
photographer, Allen Borack, who frequently posts visual descriptions for =
the
list - they're great! I contacted Larry Thornton of Thorton Studios =
(our
plebe video company) to see if he was interested in doing the same for =
Navy,
but it hasn't come to pass yet.

Parent Clubs - when you enhance your sites, please let us know! We'd =
love to
visit and see what you've done.

Midshippers - thanks for your informational broadcasts, too. =20

And Dolf, many thanks to you for the gift of this excellent and =
cherished
support system you share with your friends at NAVY. May it flourish and =
grow
up healthy.
P.S. The checks in the mail - putting my money where my mouth is! =

I think Dolf's suggestion is excellent - a "side" List for those of us =
on the LIST who may want to discuss issues more in depth, but in a =
shared forum (access limited to interested persons), from time to time. =
I certainly don't want to lose the information-focused USNA-Net as our =
primary! People with inquiries or other concerns, or seeking more =
interactive, constructive communication on a USNA issue affecting our =
mids/us, could just suggest that any interested P's look to the =
USNA-CHAT.
By the way, "chat" seems diminutive & has the connotation of =
gossip...which we ALL want to avoid. How about "USNA-FORUM" ? Many =
thanks for your help, Dolf. (And, since I have been one prompting the =
instigation of the USNA-FORUM, I will put my name up for helping in any =
way you suggest.)

Hi, Sam,

I agree with you! When I have comments that pertain to the person who =
posted, I send it to them directly, not the "whole usenet". I was =
hesitant to "post" anything for fear of being "too chatty".=20

So, Dolf, maybe two forums are a good idea!

Since I live in California, I still want to read all postings, to hear =
what is going on "back there".=20

Got a phone call from Mike '00, last night 9:00 pm here, he said the =
place was packed with Firstie Parents and they had a Pep Rally at the =
City Dock, the funny thing is with all those people Mike ran into my =
friends Kathy and Mike Meinert (from our Parents Club (Kevin '00) on the =
city dock!! He saw them first, (he says because all the Mids look =
alike).

We wanted to go back for the first home football game but couldn't leave =
work right now. So Kathy and Mike will bring back wonderful stories for =
us, and Tom, my husband rely on all of you to keep us posted. Watching =
them "march over" to the field is a wonderful sight, saw that last year =
when they played Air Force.

This may seem "chatty" but I want to know what the Mids are doing, and =
we need to hear that from the parents that are there.

Thanks for listening!

Janet

The march-over is a sight to behold, and some portion of 1200 plebes =
falling to their knees to do push-ups is a real treat. They marched =
over in companies with some being very serious and formal and others =
laughing, singing, and shouting cadences that ranged from juvenile to =
almost bawdy. I stood outside Gate one to watch them and then followed =
to the stadium, walking beside my son's company, 22, every step of the =
way. It was great...humid, a bit warm, and a good clip, but a fantastic =
experience.

I watched the Plebes in parade many times over the summer, but I had =
never experienced seeing a sea of white uniformed young men and women =
converge on the sleepy little town of Annapolis until today. The locals =
threw candy and cheered on our mids as they exited the big, blue gates =
and headed left into down the main street. They lined the streets to =
watch our children march against their first home "foe" of the seasons =
with a neatly folded bundle containing some kind of outer garment in =
their hands. The police stopped the traffic and blocked the streets so =
that our mids could safely enter the field of battle without first =
having to fight moving automobiles. =20

Before filling the empty seats in the lower blue north section of the =
stadium, the mids took the field with their company guide-on banners =
barely blowing in the light breeze. I almost cried as a firstie member =
of the glee club sang the "Star Spangled Banner" and the voice on the =
public address system introduced the Brigade of Midshipmen. =20

They quickly took their seats and the game began. Yes, it's true that =
the plebes did push-up after each touch down and the cannon boomed. At =
half time, the Drum and Bugle Corps performed an intricate combination =
of modes to the theme song from "The Hunt for Red October."

And when the game ended, the mids walked back to the Yard in singles, =
pairs, and groups of tired quiet, sophisticated young officers. They =
returned so silently and with such dignity that no one seeing them would =
have known that they trounced their foe. It was almost as if the entire =

I would be interested in both types of "networks" To me, the information
from one would be as vital as the other. I am in the group that can not get
to the Academy often, plus, I have a son who tries very hard to keep in
touch, but is not the best at communicating things that are of interest to
me, even though he might not think so.

I appreciate your warm responses to my posting regarding yesterday's
march-on and game. Anytime I attend a major event, I'll post to the list
because I know how deeply I love and miss my boy and that I'm sharing my
experiences with other parents whose hearts are as heavy and proud as mine.
I enjoy being able to share the joys of our children's lives with people
who will understand without question that the Academy's brand of education
is a unique experience and that our children are special for undertaking the
challenge.

As I've mentioned to other parent's on the list, I'd be more than happy to
serve as your very unprofessional photographer. Let me know where I can
find your mid, and I'll do my best to catch a photo opportunity.

Take a look at this Washington Post article regarding leave changes if you
can. I understand it to mean that third class beginning this year has 2
liberty weekends. I would assume from the article that all classes have had
their leave reduced.

Tough Rules Get Tougher at Naval Academy
Off-Campus Privileges Are Restricted So Students Will Hit the Books, Not the
Road
By Amy Argetsinger
Washington Post Staff Writer
Friday, September 18, 1998; Page B03

It has never been an easygoing kind of place. But things just got a little
tougher at the U.S. Naval Academy.

As one of his first acts in office, the military college's new
superintendent has placed new restrictions on students' already limited
freedom to venture off the Annapolis campus.

Vice Adm. John R. Ryan said yesterday he imposed the policies in response to
faculty complaints that, in schedules crowded with mandatory military
training and athletics, midshipmen don't have enough time to study.

Unfortunately for the mids, Ryan chose to create those extra study hours on
their precious weekends.

Sophomores, who once were allowed to go to town on Friday nights, now must
stay on campus until Saturday morning. And every class of future Naval
officers now has one fewer weekend per semester when they are allowed to
leave town. For example, seniors last year were granted eight "liberty"
weekends a semester; this year, it's seven. Sophomores had three weekends a
semester last year but will get only two this year.

"I may not be the most popular superintendent for a while. But I want them
to succeed," Ryan said. "They need opportunity, they need challenge, but
they also need structure."

The new policies are only the latest in a series of crackdowns at the
famously disciplined service academy in recent years. Ryan's predecessor,
Adm. Charles R. Larson, initiated several restrictions when he took office
in 1994 -- barring sophomores from driving cars or wearing civilian clothes,
limiting the number and duration of weekend leaves -- to inspire a more
overtly military atmosphere after a cheating scandal was attributed to
slackened standards.

A liberal-arts professor who spoke on the condition his name would not be
printed said that some faculty members and students are skeptical that
decreased leave time will help students' studies. Midshipmen, after all,
don't have to take all their weekend liberties; they always have the option
to stay in and study.

Some faculty members have complained that the academy's huge dormitory,
Bancroft Hall, home to a barrage of extracurricular activities, offers too
many distractions from studying. Ryan said yesterday, though, that he also
has moved to limit some of the after-hours activities and military training
to leave more time for schoolwork.

Ryan said the latest changes also are intended to force upperclassmen to
take on greater leadership responsibilities in the molding and training of
younger students, who are required to spend almost all of their time on
campus.

Hi -

Reading the different comments coming across the Net inspired me to
reveal some Web Sites that will provide the Plebe Parents with
intersting information. They can also know to revisit these sites to
keep current about YARD happenings. The news put out by the USNA ALumni
Servers is strictly one-way and only what USNA and Alumni Assocaitin
want aired to the public. USNA Net gives you the lattidue of getting
information from Veteran Parents who have been there, done that! So
here are a few of the more noteworthy Web Sites regarding the YARD:
   Annapolis CAPITAL Newspaper http://www.capitalonline.com
   MARYLAND Parents' http://www.usna.org
   NE Ohio Parents’(Great Site) http://www.neonap.org
   PUBLIC AFFAIRS OFFICE http://www.nadn.navy.mil/pao
   USNA SCHEDULING OFFICE http://www.nadn.navy.mil/Schedules
   TRIDENT Newspaper
http://www.dcmilitary.com/navy/trident
   USNA AA Home Page http://homeport.usnaweb.org
   USNA Home Page http://www.nadn.navy.mil
   4th Class Regiment http://www.nadn.navy.mil/4thReg

The package carried by the Mids marching from the YARD to the
Navy/Marine Corps Memorial Stadium, is their raincoats in case of foul
weather. You will see them carried if there is any doubt about inclment
weather.

The Plebes have to do push-ups to match the points that the Football
Team scores. If the first score is a TD, they wait to see if the Extra
Point is good; after that they have to do push-ups to match the total
score, not just for that particular dcore. So, if Navy is on a scoring
binge, the Plebes will be doing a lot of push-ups. The Brigade also
gets involved with a Push-up Content with Air Force. A date is set for
start and end prior to the Air Force Game - as far a s I can remenber,
Navy has always bested Air Force in this event.

If you as a Plebe Parent have not joined a Parents' Club for your
area, then I can see why some of these questions are asked on the net.
Plus, it is my understanding that the YARD has a Parents' Handbook that
is supposed to explain a lot of the tradition, etc. If you do not have
one, check with the USNA Alumni Association Parent Club Coordinator,
Babs Miller, babs.miller@usna.com. I would offer our S/E PA Parents'
Association (SPPA) Handbook, but it is over 75 pages in length. We
cover a lot of ground, general to the YARD and specifics like several
pages for each Year - Plebe, Youngster, Flamer, and Firstie, as well as
Service Selection and Commissioning Week.

Well enough for now - See Ya!

Thanks for the info, Joe. Another good web site is sponsored by the =

National Listing of PARENTS' CLUBS WEBSITES. It can be found at:

http://www.neonap.org/clublinks.html

Twelve club sites are shown on the clickable US map. Each has a
truckload of useful and fun information.

If you know of a club with a website that isn't on our map, PLEASE let
us know. If your club is interested in establishing a website for your
members, we're ready to give advise and help the computer guru in your
midst to get one up and running. Since almost all of us with Mids at
the Yard have a computer for access to e-mail, a website is a very
useful club communications tool.

Let us know if we can help.

My son lost his bet with an upperclassmen -- he bet the spread on the
game and since he lost, he has to hunt squirrels tomorrow and Tuesday.
If anyone is nearby and can take pictures, please let me know. He will
probably be in the trees (he is part mountain goat -- appropriate since
he at USNA!!). It is my understanding that this is not a unique bet, so
there might be quite a few hunters out there -- my son is the cutest one
(not that I am prejudiced or anything!!)

Sorry, it's been so long since I've been on.
I have truly enjoyed reading most everything.

Our $ check is also in the mail, Dolf. Thanks so much.

As a novice military family, and technologically challenged (Sorry, Dolf,
not much help here), much of the conversation regarding rules, etc was
out of my league. And I'm bowing to the wisdom of others, on all
counts. Just no basis for input except "I like it.".

As a minister, 8.5 hours away, I won't get to Annapolis often and truly
love reading about everyone's experiences. So, though I don't write
often I'll guess I fall into the "chattist" group ... even though the
word chat doesn't seem to apply.
Like many of you, we get regular (not daily), brief e-mails. Today's was
about the tour of the ramage and how exciting all the tech/proquiz info
is to see in real life. He was "reminded of why he wanted to be in the
navy."

Yesterday's E was the joy (?) of standing watch on 1/c Parents's weekend,
and missing the first football game to do so. Not a punishment just the
luck of the draw. Like a 1,000 amazingly unlucky Plebe bookies he lost
his bet this weekend also. Last week he gave up all right turns for the
week (making three left turns instead). Tomorrow he will have a tea
party with a blanket and stuffed animals on T-square somewhere. I find
this all hilarious, and he does also, and his sharing it a sign of the
comraderie he is finding.

I managed a trip Labor Day weekend, arriving sunday night at 9:00 pm and
meeting him at his sponsors. What a lovely young couple, with whom I
stayed in their townhouse. A bonus is they are chemistry professors, a
definite plus for our son. It was a little bittersweet to see him
relaxing in "another" family ... but oh so comforting as well. They
asked us to bring some of his favorite cds, and a few recipes they could
make for him. We took his guitar. It's a quiet home, and very humble.
But also very warm and caring. Jake says the sponsor experience is
different for everyone (some more party like) but he loves his, and you
all will understand how nice to have a guest room offered to you. (Ann
has allergies, the sponsor has a cat, so this may not be used often, but
it so nice.)

Ann and a friend will go over the weekend of Oct 3-4. He'll be coming
home Thanksgiving. We're all headed to Philadelphia for the Navy-Army
game (still amazed at how many of you USNA folk call it the other name,
Army-Navy). I think we're adjusting fine.

Jake made the volleyball team and is quite excited. He tried for
basketball and glee club, and just missed both cuts. Sot it's nice to
find a niche. The mens' volleyball season is right after basketball ...
so hopefully I'll get to take in a weekday game or two.

I love the information you all share, and live vicariously through it.
It's proven so helpful to us. Apologetic for not having more to offer
We are blessed with a wonderful parents club, and have made some great
relationships already with other parents. Don't want to think about
what it's like with others who don't have such a network. I suspect this
could be a lifeline for some of you.

Was there a length rule for these? I vaguely remember so. Correct me if
I've exceeded it! I'll quit and send two inquires to follow.

God bless one and all.
Jim

Someone suggested to us taking a motor home to the Army Navy Game.

Her experience as an Army mother many years ago ... was cooking at home
... the son and friends coming right there int he parking lot after the
game?

Lots of questions abound for me and would love input?

Can you park right there?
Can you go in and out of the stadium ... ie back to a motor home to get
warm, lunch between march on etc. Will you even want to with all the
action?
Does it sound feasible ...?
Any experience on this?

Thanks.

We got an 800 number last month with our long distance carrier---World
Com. (By the way, we are not connected with World Com in any way). We
pay $3 a month and that fee is waived when monthly account usage is $15
or more. The rates are the same as our long distance rates--.25 a
minutes during peak hours--8am-5pm Monday - Friday and .10 a minute
5pm-8am Monday - Friday and all day Saturday and Sunday. Our Mid
usually calls in the evening or on weekends so it is only .10 a minute.
The really neat thing is the area code is 877 and then our home phone
number (it was available), so it's like really calling home and easy to
remember. We have gotten more phone calls since we got the 800 number
and that is DEFINITELY a plus!! : -) We can talk for an hour for $6.
When you live 1000 miles away, that's a real bargain! The plan is
called Homebound 800 and World Com's customer service number is
1-800-275-0100.

I hope this is helpful information.

This is a little different perspective from a different company. Parade march-
in: Funny cadences humoring (with a little personal touch) the upperclassmen
along the parade route. In addition my son had the honor ?1? of being the
"radar man" scoping out all the good look'n chicks along the route. Yelling
out when identified her location (3:00 , 20 feet) and how many beers it would
take for a kiss?? Of course all heads turned and yelled. Oh Boy! Just a bit
of humor and release from daily life at the academy. I am thankful that my son
feels his fellow company commanders are pretty "cool". A sense of humor is
appreciated in this environment!! What a great place!

Marilyn,

Coincidence. We sponsor a Mid (Will Knochel) who is a 2C in 2nd Co and I
graduated from USAFA, 74, Sq. CC, CS 30.

BDU is an AF term, USN calls them cammies (camouflage).

Good luck to your son on the squirrel hunt. Their term for them is yard
dogs, FWIW.

My wife Sara and I have been lucky enough to attend
all home games since out son Will' 00 was a Plebe. We could not
have put it more beautifully than Courtni did. I might just add one
thing. At the end of each game the football team and all coach's
return to the Navy sidelines in front of the entire Brigade. All sing
"Navy Blue and Gold." It is a very moving experience. When the
last note is sung, all yell "BEAT ARMY."

I would also like to report about the Chapel service Sunday.
When you are at the Yard be sure to attend, you will not soon
forget any service you attend.

On a serious note Sara and I have been very concerned
about the current problems with the Commander in Chief, and how
this would be "discussed" at the Yard, and the higher standard
our sons and daughters are held to by the Honor Code. A second
and equally important subject of the "mixed" signal that is being
sent to our service men and women by the polsters. They report that
the American public does not care about this mess as long as it does
not effect the "economy". The confusion of how can ONLY our service
men and women be held to a standard, that the the Commander in Chief
and the American Public choose to ignore. WELL REST EASY ABOUT
YOUR MID, after Sunday's message they have NO QUESTIONS.

Parents, do not worry in any repects about that portion or your
son or daughters learning. Attend a service, more importantly
listen to your Mid. They are being instilled with the highest
standards of non compromising moral character in our country today.
WE CAN LEARN FROM THEM.

As a addition to Bill's remarks about attending church services, I'd like to
advise all to carry extra tissues. Each time I've attended, the singing of
"Eternal Father" with the accompaniment of the organ pipes and the dipping
of the flag in respect to the valiant dead has brought me to tears. During
the Plebe Parents' Weekend Protestant service, the gentleman who sat on the
pew in front of me cried buckets during that song. It's incredibly moving.

Sorry about the confusion. This must be why Sara usually writes
everything for me.

Sunday's sermon in Chapel was only about
ethics, and morals. Nothing about Trips or Liberty's. Nor
was it political. It would not be a good idea for me to attempt
to paraphrase a GREAT MESSAGE. Write and get a copy
if your have an interest, I intend to get my copy framed.

I just received a forward from my daughter discussing the proposed pay
raise for all cadets and midshipmen. It appears that their pay will be
raised $42 monthly to $600 -- this is gross pay as opposed to net pay.
The bill should be leaving committee soon -- I suggest that everyone
write or email their congressman and senators encouraging passage of
this raise. If nothing else, it might help eliminate the "Hi Mom, send
money" messages!!!

As an aside, does anyone else have problems limiting cash
"distributions" to their child -- I am so proud of my children and also
recognize that I am saving a fair amount of tuition -- I can't quibble
over the occasional $20 charge -- am I a softie or what??

Adm. Ryan makes 1st report to academy governing board

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
----
By DAVID BROWN, Staff Writer
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
----
Succumbing to pressure from relatives, most freshman midshipmen who've left
the Naval Academy so far didn't want to be there in the first place, academy
officials said.
Adm. John R. Ryan, academy superintendent, told the Board of Visitors
yesterday that about 60 of the 80-plus students who left during the rigorous
Plebe Summer introduction to Navy life said they felt pushed to attend by
relatives.

The topic was one of several covered during the Board of Visitors' first
meeting of the school year held at the academy's Alumni Hall. Changes in
physical training, outlines for new educational standards and long-range
plans for the school were at the top of the list during Adm. Ryan's first
report to the board as the new superintendent.

Although he doesn't want to see midshipmen leave, Adm. Ryan said this summer
was on par with typical summer attrition, which is 7.1 percent.

This year, however, marked the continued phasing in of graduated fitness
requirements -- subtle increases in physical standards so the plebes don't
break down in the first week, he said. The same is expected of midshipmen by
the end of the summer as in years past, but fewer of them will have injuries
from the first week.

"My Plebe Summer was all about breaking you down," Adm. Ryan said. "This
class ('02) is in better shape than any of the classes before."

Still, board members wanted to know why some of the plebes left. Sen. Paul
Sarbanes, D-Md., asked what they might have missed during the screening
process.

"It's hard to tell your parents that you're not coming (to the academy)
after they've held a banquet for you," said Adm. Gary Roughead, commandant
of midshipmen.

Besides sitting in on classes and meeting midshipmen, Adm. Ryan said he has
spent his first few months at the academy looking at creating a long-range
plan for improvement. The plan would map out changes for the next 25 years
and should be unveiled just before the year 2000.

The plan would enrich the academic and physical missions, along with the
leadership programs, he said.

In the short term, that means renovating outdated chemistry labs and
classrooms and updating the technology there.

"One thing I've found disappointing, is that we have let this flagship
institution deteriorate to some point," he said. "The equipment in the
chemistry labs and the electrical engineering labs is the same as it was 32
years ago."

Another change involves the introduction of the Center for the Study of
Professional Military Ethics, which is expected to begin in October or
November.

The center, which is funded privately, will focus on developing ethics among
military leaders through "education, dialogue, reflection and moral action."
Class space has been carved out in Luce Hall, and officials have chosen Al
Pierce, a professor at the National Defense University in Washington D.C.,
to be the center's director.

Other topics covered included:

.Cutting free time -- In response to midshipmen and faculty complaints that
there isn't enough time for studies, officials cut by one the number of
weekends that sophomores, juniors and seniors can leave the area.

"They (the sophomores and juniors) feel like they've been shaken a little
bit on the new restrictions," Adm. Roughead said. "But we feel they need
structure and time."

.The City Dock gate -- The newly finished gate connecting the academy to
City Dock will remain closed except for special events, Adm. Ryan said.

Mr. Sarbanes asked Adm. Ryan if there was any way to accommodate Annapolis
residents who want to see the gate opened more.

Citing lack of manpower and heightened security due to recent bombings in
the Middle East, Adm. Ryan said he would prefer the gate stay closed unless
he and the city can come up with an alternative. That might include the city
paying people, such as police officers, to watch the gate, Mayor Dean L.
Johnson has said.

."Thrust vectors" -- Using aviator parlance, Adm. Ryan described areas at
the academy that were going in the right direction, including a stabilized
projected budget from the chief of Naval operations, a solid core
curriculum, and Y2K compliance ahead of schedule.

.Midshipmen pay raises -- Adm. Ryan called on the board's congressional
members to back pay raises for mids that would occur in sync with pay raises
for ensigns and second lieutenants.

He said midshipmen make more than $550 a month, but most of that is siphoned
off to uniform, computer and book purchases throughout the year.

"What they have in walk-around change appears to be modest," he said.

I don't have a Mid in the Drum and Bugle Corps but GO LANE!! I wish they
would send something to SW Missouri, Springfield/Branson area!! I would
love to have ANY Mid here!!
I am missing mine terribly these days. At least I figured out why. It
has been almost 7 weeks since I have seen him. AND I have 9 weeks more
until I see him. That's a long time, the longest I have been seperated
from him since he was born! Hard! :(
Now for my question. Brad has watch for tomorrow. Does he stand watch

1. Nice going, Lane. Definitely a little jealous, but delighted to hear
the possibilities. Wish my son were in the Drum & Bugle just for the
andouille alone! He loves it spicy! Have a ball ... and I can't wait
for the Blue & Gold Wave to wash over the Green Wave!

2. Taste of military life ... first weekend to go visit is Oct 3-4.
Son's english class just got MO (moving orders) to DC to see "Waiting for
Godot." Leaves 1200 that sunday, and not back until 1900. We could go
with them, but then couldn't get home in decent hour. So visit cut a
little shorter. Ouuch, but that's life. And, what a neat opportunity.
Cost to mids .... $0! That's a cultural bonus I hadn't expected, which
is nice, even if timing could be better for us.

3. He made the volleyball team! Sounds fun. They have MO's to go to
Ocean City, MD (about 80 miles I think) to have a pix taken on beach for
photo schedule poster. They're selling Navy Volleyball T's as their
fundrasier, so, of course, we stocked up for the uncles, etc. After
missing cut for Glee Club by one, varsity basketball by one or two ....
he's delighted to have made the volleyball team. And ... of course ...
we're proud of whatever he does!

Hi Nancy..to answer question concerning Midn on Watch.

There are two kinds of Security Watches performed by all Midn.

First kind is the Company Watch:(security, fire and phone watch)
performed by the 3/c & 4/c on each deck. This Watch begins at 0630 with
an uniform inspection for all shifts and ends at midnight. Each of the
midn must sign up for a minimum of "watch pts" credit. So that one does
not miss classes, you normally would sign up for watch during your free
periods until that particular day's schedule is covered by each of the
companies for their own decks. Weekends and Holiday watches earn extra
pts. Uniform for this watch is "working blues"(black pants, black shirt &
tie).

The second kind of Watch is the Main Office Watch: performed by all
classes of Midn and all 30 companies. Basically, one company per day
covers this watch. Somewhat of the same procedure as above except that
this one is a 24 hr watch. The Main Office is located just off the
Rotunda Area. Interacts with public, receives & distributes packages &
msg's to company areas, maintains log books and assist the "Officer of
the Day' as necessary. The uniform for this watch is "summer whites".

HOPE THIS HELPS. Dolly '72

We got ours ... and scanned if for our son to no avail. But, think not
that we used any less tissues! Couldn't be prouder of them all!
Planning a little party to show it to friends and neighbors .. to spread
the enthusiasm.

Also got proofs to pix in dress blues. Not the best pix, and expensive,
but still nice to see his face. Love the flag behind them in some of the
proofs!

Don't know the rhyme or reason to who gets what when ... but they've
started sending them out.

Jim & Ann Wilson
Jake, 02
