From: iudoc@juno.com (james e wilson)

Been a while since I've written ..... (Jim Wilson, Jake 2002, 15th), and
it has been a tad quiet lately, so here's an update ... welcome aboard,
Art!

We get only a sparse e-mail or two from Jake. We understand the
shortage, and know our son's personality pretty well. In fact, he has
had server problems this past week, so he hasn't gotten anything from us
for about 8 days. But he does call each Saturday, or Sunday, always
from his sponsors. He was so busy in the last two weeks that he only
checked his ground mail twice ... each time finding a host of goodies and
letters.

His sponsor family have turned out to be wonderful, and he loves going
there. This week he even got to spend the night there, and go to church
with them. He had been on leave with the volleyball team and they
finished late Saturday, and didn't have to play again until mid afternoon
Sunday. So they were given the choice to either go back or stay out.
You know what they decided!

He played VB at Univ of Maryland, and Navy crushed the tourney
opposition. So much so, that the plebes all played and I guess did well.
Our plebe "club sport" beat Drexel's varsity, to ice the tournament.

Our bad news is that he will play VB at Rutgers the evening of the
Army-Navy Game ... which seems like poor planning to me. They'll go to
the game and then leave immediately after, without time for dinner or
more than minimal visiting. We're disappointed, but sandwiched between
Thanksgiving and Christmas as it is, it'll work.

His class work is tough but he seems to be hanging in there with a 3.?
something. He reports that the "wages of procrastinating anything is
death." Has the hardest time with writing papers, which he did in HS by
staying up late at the computer. He's learning to work in smaller
segments of time, and seems like he's making progress.

He'll fly home for Thanksgiving; we made the arrangements in July. But
I'll pick him up for Christmas and take him back. He finishes early
through a scheduling fluke, at 1300 on 12/15. His little brother (16)
and I will take him back on 1/4, and will stay to watch Navy/Harvard
basketball game ... and hopefully be able to watch the Fiesta Bowl
together somewhere.

He continues to tell funny stories, which is our barometer of what's
happening. Halloween was a stitch with "trick or trash." He missed
some of it for volleyball tourney. And he "assassinated" a 1/c at
dinner ... which includes crawling on your hands and knees under the
table ... putting mustard on his dress shoes ... and then getting back to
your room before being physically apprehended by the wounded
upperclassmen. Evidently the other plebes, noticing an "attempt"
underway, do they all can to assist you. Sounds a little like you have
to be there to appreciate it ... and his thrill came only after at least
one other failed attempt ... and we didn't hear the consequences of that.

He went out in a submarine, and loved the food but not the low ceiling.
He's 6'2.

In short, the "Jakeman" reports the good stuff ... and is quiet about the
bad. From our parents group contacts, which have been wonderful, we
know our experience is not the same as others, but not unusual either.
Little "consoling" to date, (which we miss a little) but also not a great
deal of communication. We just keep praying, and sending those cards
and letters.

A question ... what does one get a young man who has everything as it
were ... for christmas? Birthdays?

Lastly ... we live in Cols, OH. We had a USNA family from Kansas whom we
met watching the parade on parent's weekend stay with us recently when
driving to Annapolis. If that could help any of you, or those you know,
just let us know. You'd probably deliver a care package for us, and
we'll get to know another proud family of a future United States naval
officer! We'd be glad to help; it's a humble aboude, but a serious
offer.

Is there a space limit on these communiques? Hope not.

All's well. Hope it is with you and yours

Jim & Ann
Jacob, 2002.

Glad to get something on the net. Mustard on the shoes huh?? I will have
to inquire as to how many times Brad has attempted that.
Brad sends short in frequent emails. He does call every weekend, but not
at a regular time. Saturday he called at 6:15AM, "Hi, did I wake you?" I
felt it was OK to fib a little. I don't care IF he does wake me.
Brad is so busy with the Men's Glee Club practices and preformances. He
is also the manager of the Varsity baseball team. He said it was great,
no drill and you could go to the ball field and sleep or study. That is
in between "doing stuff". One of Brad's roomies got pneumonia and when
Brad started feeling stuffy he asked the baseball trainer for something.
He was given enough Sudafed to get him through the cold and never had to
go to sick call. Brad doesn't get to his Sponsor family's much. He is
often tied up on Saturdays getting things done that didn't get done during
the week. The Glee Club practices 2 evenings a week and a couple of the
performances have been on the weekends in DC.
Academically he is fine. He and 14 others had a problem with a paper that
the prof game them all zeros on, but they went as a group and got it taken
care of so they were regraded. She failed to give them a small detail on
the format and the only ones that didn"t get a zero were "NAPERS". I
think that is what he called them.
He along with the other Catholic Choir members are going to NYC Nov 13 -
15 to sing at St. Patricks Cathedral. They will also be going to New
Orleans in Feb. Then in March the Men's Glee Club will go to Europe. So
guess what Brad is getting for Christmas and his January birthday? Yep
the $600 he needed for the Europe trip. Not bad 14 days, 5 cities ( 4
countries) all meals and lodging for $600.
He is happy and anxious to come home. He will be flying home for both
holidays. This past weekend he played tour guide for High School students
and he was a goulish usher during the Organ Concert Friday night.
Ohio isn't on our way to Annapolis, but thanks for the offer. We are in
SW Missouri near Branson so our home is open if anyone is down here!
I am proud of all our Mids and think we as paernts have the right idea.
Be there when they need us and count on each other for the myriad of
details our Mids leave out. I do love the mustard!!
23 days and counting!!! I miss Brad! Nancy and Todd P.S. Cody the
brother too

Jim & Ann, thank you for "checkin' in". WOW. You made my day.
Very similar experiences as to paucity of communication from our plebe, Gus
11th Co., and their tendency (which I admire and don't emulate often enough)
not to talk about the negative, just to deal with it.

I loved the tale of assassination. I've heard about this honorable
tradition from Gus, but never knew someone who actually accomplished it!
Have you also heard about the 'cannonballs'? (I can't think of the proper
term) -- Apparently, on every table, there are one or two plates of a
special 'dessert'. (Never on the menu, just always ominously present...I
think they may use the same ones week after week...) These are round
pastries about the size of a small fist, filled with an incredibly sweet
paste like hard sauce (for plum pudding--without the whiskey). If you make
a go for it, you elect to eat a plate full (or two) and then TRY to make a
run for your room (or perhaps a bathroom) before 'losing lunch.' Some have
made it. I believe the prize is carry-on for a week!? (Fortunately, for
my mother's heart, Gus has not tried this...he really doesn't like very
sweet stuff.) He has, however, done a 'beat Army' (I think that's the
expression) several times: electing to drink at one go whatever the
upperclassmen at table put in a waterglass...the description has made me
laugh and cry. I didn't know one could drink mayonnaise. (I think the
prize is the honor of having done a 'beat Army'.)

Haven't heard any tales of trick or trash, except a brief description from
the 2001 bulletin-board (not a bad place to visit if you haven't already:
at www.usna2001.com ). Apparently, if the upperclass who visit your room
don't get or like their treat, they 'rearrange' your room appropriately.
This is certainly another opportunity for roommates to work together to see
that their offering makes the grade, for the common good.

Studying is obviously a huge priority--and time management. This is perhaps
one of the biggest differences between our kids and freshmen at your basic
civilian college. (I live in the neighborhood of three -- 3 --
colleges/universities in New Orleans, one of which is nationally reknowned
as a party school...so I get to see a lot to compare!)

You may find, as we did when Gus recently spent the weekend with my family
away from the Yard, that Jake is actually a little uncomfortable, hard to
relax, in civilian surroundings. Gus said he finds he now prefers military
to civilian company. I don't know whether that is the universal &
understandable adjustment to (and embrace of) military life, or Gus's own
private reaction. Heard from his sponsor, a good guy-- a Marine instructor
at the Academy -- that that's typical, and how he felt for a long time. I
suspect it's true for many of the midns. I think they spend so much time
incredibly focused & prioritized that being around us mere mortal
civilians - who waste time prodigiously, and gossip, and carp & gripe - is
annoying.

It will certainly be interesting to see Gus 'home' on his former turf at
T-time and Christmas.

Mustard on the shoes, indeed! When I think of how Gus reacts to the
slightest blemish on those shoes, it makes me LOL to think of a glob of
yellow mustard...especially thinking about them in whites!

Must go. Would love to hear from others whatever experiences/tales they can
share.

By the way if you, and others on the list, know of any young midns
(especially but not only plebes) who could use a few home-made cookies
(remember, not everyone bakes and not every midn has such voluble support
from home), please send me their name/co./mailbox no. (I'm told that
including the company no. speeds up mail delivery). Fondly, Lane.

It was pretty fun to see all the latest news. I was pretty impressed

drink mayo? <gag> I really haven't posted much on this list. My son is
C2C Mike Deaver, exchange this semester from USAFA. Mike has really
enjoyed USNA this semester. Especially the change in climate, how much
humidity can one enjoy? Really though, kayaking in the bay has been fun
for him. Friday he heads up to USMA to watch USAFA win. Bets anyone? LOL
Talked with Mike on Sat. He really enjoyed the organ concert. You know,
he even recognized Phantom, thanks to mom!

Since everyone else is "checking in", I thought I would do the same. Mike
and I drove to the Academy over the weekend to see my son (Michael '00).
From the Cleveland area it is a nice drive of a bit over 6 hours. And the
fall folliage (although a bit past prime) was lovely.

I am always awed by my first view of the Yard. I related to Mike that, had
Michael chosen N D or U of M for his college choice, I would never have set
foot on this inspiring and beautiful place. And yet, I feel such a part of
it, and always will. Michael's choice has not only changed his life, but in
many ways, mine as well.

He had to stand watch over the weekend, so our time with him was limited to
daylight hours and dinners, but I relished each and every moment. There was
plenty of time for talking and catching up. We got into the Navy Store
Saturday morning and I was able to get a really nice Jewelry box for Michael
that will be part of his Christmas loot. Also a Swarovski crystal figurine
that I have been looking at for the past few weeks (in Canada and again in
the states) with a 36% savings! What a place!! I had not been there since
the expansion and remodeling and it is Huge!!

My son, like the majority of the Mids, is not a daily communicator. His
e-mails are short and sweet, and his calls average about one a week (hey,
I'm not complaining) His attentions are focused on "the job at hand" - his
grades, and staying on sup's list. I greatfully accept whatever crumbs he
throws my way! :>) BTW He ran in the Marine Corps Marathon in D. C. on
Oct 25th and finished in a time of 3 hours 15 minutes. Not enough to
qualify him for Boston, but I think the glamour of running marathons is over
for him (It is his second). He had forgotten his vest with his assigned
number when he packed to go to DC and was given a new vest once he got
there - with number 1 on it. He said that whenever any group saw him and
his #1 he was heartily cheered!! Made him feel great!!

On Thursday evening his company (probably all of the companies) had a
Halloween "party". My son laughed as he told us about the various costumes
and antics. He went as "The Disco King". (Which was so funny since I had
recently seen an old college beau and Mike had dubbed him "Disco Dan"!)
Said that it was a really enjoyable time for all.

The Yard was alive with people and events: A Concert that we missed, the
women's soccer team played Army and, according to my son, beat them for the
first time. Mids were everywhere, taking in the sun and warm temps. I
could not have ordered a more perfect weekend - weatherwise. And, as I
always find, and still amazes me, these young men and women are courteous
and caring to everyone they meet. So many of the Mids we passed
acknowledged us with a greeting. I wanted to hug every one of them and tell
them the hug was from their Mom!! But, I would have looked pretty silly
doing that!!

Michael will be able to leave the Yard for Thanksgiving on Friday the 20th.
He will drive to Cleveland and spend a couple of days with us before he
drives to Michigan to see his father. He will be going to area schools for
recruitment and PR. He will spend Thanksgiving with his father, so seeing
him this past weekend was a real treat, but even after 2 full years of
saying good bye to him, it was still so very difficult to watch him return
to Mother B. I feel as though I lose him a little more each time. Wake up,
Mom! Right? I already have lost him to the Navy (probably Marines).

No funny stories of Plebe antics or such, Michael does not say too much, and
I don't try to ask too many questions, don't want to sound like a nosy and
prying Mom. He tells me what he wants me to know, and I have THIS service
to help me learn about the rest. Believe me, an account of the walkover
from a Mid's perspective would not sound anywhere as grand as the ones we
have read here!!!

So, that's my two cents worth. Mike and I had a wonderful time and the good
news is that Nordstroms was out of his size in the pair of shoes Michael had
wanted Mom to buy for him. (They were a mere $175, so Mom did not have to
look the bad guy when she chose (and she would have) NOT to pay that much
for a pair of ugly brown "wingtips"!!!!) :>)

Sandi - Michael Stoker, Class of 2000

FYI - Because of the website that Mike and I put together for the Northeast
Ohio Naval Academy Parents' Club (www.neonap.org) we were asked to (get
this) participate in the formation of a Friends and Family Bicentennial Site
for West Point. (Bicentennial is 2002) We have had a lot of fun in working
with a group of about 6 others to get this site ready for the web. It was
announced on November the 1st. Not quite done, yet, but still a nice site
(and I think the best site that the Army in general has to offer-but that's
just MY opinion!) If anyone is interested it's address is:

                            http://www.west-point.org/family/bicent

I created the background for the site (there really was not anything that we
could pull from other Army sites that we liked) so I feel a special link to
it.

Sandi, thank you. I was on the Yard for a few minutes, in the midst of
those bright, courteous and helpful midns we do recognize from your
wonderful recounting. Thanks for the time and care (and talent) it took to
send us thirsty parents that deep drink of water. Lane.

I just thought I would check in also. Regarding assasination: My Mid
told me about this several weeks ago. He says it usually occurs on
Fridays. Things get really crazy because the weekend is near.
According to Brett '02, a plebe gets a bottle of honey (I guess some use
mustard) and crawls on the floor, under the table, whatever to get to
the "chosen firstie." Other plebes create diversions so the assasinator
is not discovered. If he is spotted crawling on the floor, uppers douse
him with their drinks. However, if the assasinator makes it, he pours
honey on those lovely polished leather shoes and returns to his spot at
the table where he stands on his chair and announces, "Attention Company
(number), Mr. So and So has been assasinated!" Brett has also had the
dubious pleasure of downing a "Beat Army." He says the barbecue sauce
and tabasco really make it sting. He and his roomies bought $40 worth
of candy for "trick or trash." They had a few visits and then got the
bright idea of trading nameplates with the uppers across the hall.
After that they had very few visitors! He now has a shoebox full of fun
size candy. I guess I won't have to send a care package for awhile. We
get a phone call once a week--I'm thankful for 800 numbers--and a short
email--usually replies to questions and some information just about
every day. Brett has had his ups and downs, and I think it helps to
have an outside perspective on things. We knew very little about
military life--except for what we saw in the movies!! : -) So this has
been an adjustment for all of us. We keep encouraging him and assuring
him that he can do this! He said the happiness factor is now about
1/6--the number of days of leave (4) divided by the number of days
remaining until leave (24 at that time). He also said you can feel the
happiness factor beginning to sweep the brigade. I think they are all
ready to come home and Brett's 3 younger brothers along with mom and dad
are ready for him to be here too! It's just 3 weeks from tomorrow.
Thanks for all the info and support.

Sherrie Brett '02

Hi, I haven't written in awhile but couldn't resist after reading all of =
the wonderful news from everyone. I had tears streaming down my face a =
few times, too.

Our son Kris, '02, seems to really be doing well. His goal is to make =
the sup's list. He's looking forward to some extra leave. He plays =
intramural basketball 3 or 4 times a week and also practices with the =
Navy Karate Team. He has practiced Tae Kwon Do since he was 6 years =
old.

We have an 800# so he calls almost every night. I get a "good morning" =
e-mail every morning. This is in place of the hug that I used to get =
when he was here. It's great! I think we actually communicate more now =
than when he lived here! I still miss him though, sometimes I will just =
start crying for no apparent reason, usually when I read an e-mail or =
hear a song, or just out of the blue. =20

My husband John and I have visited the Yard several times. It's nice to =
know your way around so you can relate to places they are talking about. =
We also have a complete wardrobe of Navy apparel. In fact, I plan on =
doing most of my Christmas shopping at the Mid Store. The CDs of the =
Navy Choir and Glee Club are wonderful! We are learning all of the Navy =
songs. The Naval Academy Choir sang at our little historic Smoot =
Theatre in Parkersburg, WV last year. We are hoping they will return =
this year and we can host a few of the members for a night or two. =20

We are counting down the days till Thanksgiving break, 22 until we pick =
him up on the Yard. We will have turkey and all of the trimmings at our =
house. All of the family and friends are invited. I think Kris is most =
anxious about getting home and driving his car! That was one of the =
hardest things for him going in...not being able to drive. He is also =
anxious to crank up his electric guitar and amplifier! Oh I can't =
wait!!!!

It's really great to hear from all of you and to know that we are not =
alone.  =20

  =20
PS...Sandi, cool web site for USMA! Our son Mike is USMA '94! He is =
finishing his committment to the Army at Ft. Campbell, Ky and will be =
out next March!

Hi everyone:
WOW what a great site. My friends are so tired of hearing what a
wonderful mid I have. But I can brag and relate to everone here. Since I
am new at this and just posted a "hello" last week
some of you asked me to elaborate. Welll my son Arthur is class of 01,
an enginering major and just made the boxing team to travel. I wish he
would have picked a better sport , but has always liked the rough and
tough.Wrestled in high school, but didn't want to wrestle at the academy
and went into boxing. Doing much better academically then as a plebe,
says he isn't as emotionally drained as he was when he was a plebe and
can now get in a routine. He says he definitely has to get out of his
room and to the library to study. His emails are sparce, but we both
have downloaded AOL Instant messagener and talk a lot on that in the
evenings. That is great because I can save and print our conversations
for his dad and brother to read. I don't get to the yard as much as I
would like and the invitation from a layover in Ohio is great. I drove
up from St.Louis Mo for Hearndon last May and took my mother with me. A
very long drive indeed, about 15 hours with stops. Anyone passing thru
St.Louis is welcome to stay. Have a twin bed and a couch pull out, won't
be the Ritz but we could talk "mids" all you want. Of course give me as
much notice so I can clean"Ha Ha". It was funny to hear about the funny
things. Arthur pulled the mustard trick when he was a plebel, I forgot
if he succeed. He is pretty open about things. Getting a little stale on
somethings at the yard. Very upset about the weekend policy, he is still
"whinny" about that. I trys to get weekends but then some of his friends
have problems and things don't work out. I think he is very homesick.
Last saw him on June 26 when he headed back to the yard. Coming home for
Christmas and Thanksgiving , have to get his xmas tickets asap, almost
forgot.

Arthur is determined to go Navy Seals, anyone else out there with any
SEALS. I am newsletter editor for our local newsletter. Any tips would
help for the newsletter . Well take care and I check regularly

It was pretty fun to see all the latest news. I was pretty impressed
with the notes about the table antics, especially the mustard shoes,

Art & Gerri: Glad to know that this "problem" of being proud to bursting of
our midn sons and daughters doesn't go away, but lasts well into youngster
year! We, too, have a 'rough & tough' son whose life goal (since age 12)
has been to become a Navy SEAL...(only since 14 has he been focused also on
attending the Naval Academy). What company is Arthur in? (Gus is 11th, on
7-0)
If Arthur went back on June 26, does that mean he was a detailer? How did
he enjoy that? (By any chance did he help train Foxtrot--11/12 company?)
Your invite is lovely! If I drive up to USNA (would probably be for
Herndon), I will call ahead!
I don't think New Orleans is exactly a stopover for anyone driving to USNA,
but all midns and family members are welcome to stay, visit, call when you
find yourself here in New Orleans, or contemplating a trip. I'd love to
show you around, visit, point you in some good directions if you're visiting
or on business...Sincerely, Lane.

Joyce E Howland: Asked if I thought the drive to see Herndon was worth
it. Most definetely!!!I was not sure I could go since my husband and
younger son couldn't make and anyway Arthur was due home less than a
week after that. Well let me tell you , he was so disappointed when he
heard we weren't coming. HERNDON IS A BIG DEAL TO THE PLEBES. In a way
, it is their graduation. It means a lot more to them, than I realized.
So i found a way to go, and he was thrilled. We did get time to spend
with him and Herndon, they pretty much had liberty that weekend and we
loved it. Don't miss Sunday Services they were fantastic. It was
Baccalarate (sp?) that weekend. WARNING. Check websites for activities.
We missed an awesome Dress Parade, because Arthur forgot to tell us.
Also he did not check email that weekend and missed the notice for dress
whites for Sunday Services and was not allowed in If you can bring a
lawn chair to Herndon, it is often Hot and long. DO NOT TRY TO GET A
SEAT CLOSE TO THE HERNDON MONUMENT. To many spectators, and you get
stepped on and everyone blocks your view. Up on the chapel steps is
great or on the lawn next to the chapel. We got video's and it still is
amazing to look at. Arthur never got to see the "before " pictures of
Herndon all greased up before it was attacked. Also be sure to by the
local papers that weekend. Some great pictures of Herndon for
scrapebooks. Take a small cooler of drinks, water etc. it is a long
afternoon. BUT BY ALL MEANS GO!!!! Gerri

Gerri Ball gave great comments and suggestions regarding Herndon. If at all
possible, plebe parents 'should' attend. This is one of the few plebe
activities that the parents can actually share with their mid.
You will want to be in place by about noon for the 1400 action.
This school year Herndon is on Friday, May 21, 1999. The formal dedication
parade on Worden field is that morning and the Herndon assault is that
afternoon.
The schedule for Commissioning week activities is on the USNA website. As of
now the schedule on the website is the one for last year, however the schedule
remains about the same from year to year. This year Commissioning Week goes
back to a Friday through Wed. week. Commissioning is on Wed., May 26.
Most Firstie families spend the entire week in the Annapolis area, so housing
can be tight. If you don't have housing for Herndon already, you do need to
take care of that right away.
Many of our local families have chosen to take Commissioning Week as a family
vacation each year. There are activities each day, the mids are required to
be at all of the activities, but there is still a lot of free time. Generally
there is liberty each day and evening. The Blue Angels rehearsal and
performance is a delight for anyone not used to seeing them perform.

The plebe updates have been great reading. In addition to the current mustard
and honey being used for King Hall assassinations, my Firstie had to use
chocolate sauce during his plebe year.
The last successful cannonball run (consumption) was done by a '99er. Somehow
that kid never tossed his cookies. I don't think that he has ever had another
cannonball though.
This is 'X' (exam) week for the mids, so the plebes are probably busy with
tests and papers. After this week, Thanksgiving holiday becomes very real.
Enjoy those holidays.

I'd really appreciate information regarding the events of my mid's first
summer cruise. When do they have leave? When does the cruise begin? Are
there required military training sessions? How much free time will they
have? Should I plan on seeing him during the month of June or is late
July/early August more realistic? When the mids are on the Yard, will they
have free time on weekends?

Thanks,

Hi = I am responding after reading Courtini's question regarding Summer
Blocks. Your Mid has 3 Summer Blocks that cover the Summer time frame.
It is luck of the draw, and there is no set rotation. The 1st Block
could Cruise, 2nd Block Training, and 3rd Block Leave; or 1st Block,
Training, 2nd Block Leave, and 3rd Block, Cruise; or it could be 1st
Block, Leave, 2nd Block Cruise, and 3rd Block, Trainig. Unless the Mid
has Summer SChool, the rotation could be anything like the above. Do
not plan anything until you know your Mid's Summer Schedule. The one
item that will be affected is Leave. Of my Son Jay's (LT, USN, '93) 3
Summer Blocks (Youngster, Flamer, and Firstie), the 1 item that was most
impacted was Leave. Out of those 3 years, he actually had a full Leave
Block once - his Flamer Summer! Under normal circumstances, there will
not be much free time. The YARD supposedly passed out to each Plebe
Parent the past few years, a Parents' Handbook. Evidently people have
not read the document because items like these are covered therein.
What I did when my son was accepted was devour everything that was sent
regarding the YARD; in additon to doing additonal research on my own.
Also, based upon experiences of our S/E PA Mids, our Parents' Club
maintains our own 75-Page Handbook which we update annually, provide to
all incoming Plebe Families, not just the ones that join our S/E PA
Parents' Association, and encourage them to read and understand its
content. Hopefully this will give some idea regarding Summer Blocks.
The Blocks do get more complicated as your Mid advances along his/her
tour at the YARD. Thanks :>) See Ya!

Hi;
Joseph B. was right about summer blocks after Plebe Year. It is luck of
the draw and you won't know what plans to make till your Plebe gets his
schedule. They had 4 blocks last year summer of 98. The blocks were 3
weeks long. I do know of a good number of mids who got 2 blocks of leave
back to back. Arthur (01) was home the first six weeks after Plebe
summer , then had his 3 block (NTT) Naval Tactical Training=(good
accurate description in the handbook) back at the Yard. He said he had
very little free time and was very tired. It is a three week
introduction into the other aspects of Navy life, Marines, SEALS, Air,
etc. Then after that he left for his cruiese which took him to Boston
and New York harbor for three weeks. He had a weekend free but had a
blast exploring New York as a young single Navy
"guy", I think if we had been there to see him(which I thought about,)
it would have put a damper on his weekend. It was great having him home
for six weeks but sent him back to the yard very early in the summer and
it has been a long time in seeing him.

If you are going to Herndon in get your hotels ASAP, if you can't get
close go a little ways and then just rent a car. Hotel rates are
cheaper, and then if you rent a car, it works about the same. We could
always find a place to park even if we had to walk to the yard. You can
also usually park at the Stadium and get the shuttle in. But look into
hotels NOW. Gerri
Exams are here. I find the gift certificate program from the DryDock a
great idea(not sure if Plebes, can go there by themself, check it out) I
find that Arthur often skips meals to study, then is hungry, so he can
then go to the DryDock and get food. They offter them in $5.00
increments and can be charged. Their phone number is410-293-2434 They
will then deliver to the rooms. PLEBE parent's be sure that your mid can
go to the DryDock. I think after their plebe summer they can. Arthur
also exists on Gatorade and Instant Oatmeal cereal. But he has access to
the microwave in the wardroom, that a plebe wouldn't be caught near. So
be carefull with what you send.Gerri

Thanks for the helpful info. I know Brad (plebe) and his roomies frequent
the Drydock on Sunday's after Mass. Not sure IF he is supposed to but he
has been doing it for some time now.
Everyone has referred to this Parent Handbook. I have turned the house
upside down and have no such item. Does ANYONE have any idea the easiest,
fastest way to get one?
Thanks and everyone enjoy your wonderful day! My Plebe will be home in 19
days so I am in the final countdown! I can't wait. :)

You may want to go to the Central Florida site at
http://www.fla-homes.com/centfl~1.html and then go to the Plebe Parents
Survival Guide section and look at our Plebe Parents Survival Guide or print
it out if you wish. It is updated annually.

I called Annapolis Accommodations today to book a room for our visit to the
Yard in May. (We've used them twice, and they have been very pleasant and
helpful) I was told by the customer service person, "Breezy" that her boss
had been informed that the date for Herndon was changing to the 24th.
Does anyone else know anything about this. According to Annapolis Accd. they
were in contact with the Academy today. I guess Herndon is usually the Monday
before graduation. Is this correct? The Academy web page shows Herndon on
the 21st on their calendar. However, I understand we're in the Navy now! And
expect changes to schedules.
Hopefully we can get the straight answer soon as I understand that time is of
the essence for booking as soon as possible

Was on-line yesterday and came across the NEONAP webpage. I read about =
USNA-NET and thought it sounded interesting. After I signed up, I was =
discussing the service with local USMA parents who have used it for some =
time. The "Mom" loves it but advised that, on occasion, they have had =
to verify information received. She said that information received from =
Cadets (and, I'm sure, Mids) is sometimes "rumor-driven" and not always =
accurate.

As a matter of introduction:

Our son (Robert) entered USNA directly from high school (Catholic HS, =
Little Rock - all male) and turned 18 during Plebe Summer. He told us =
that the Naval Academy Summer Seminar (which he attended the previous =
summer) was one of the best recruiting tools that USNA offers, as he was =
(almost) able to see what USNA is really like. He didn't seem to suffer =
too much during Plebe Summer (physically and/or emotionally) and lost =
less than 5 pounds. (He did follow the recommended Physical Training =
schedule USNA provided prior to I-Day.) His roommates are from NY and =
Indiana, so his horizons are certainly broadening. =20
He is in the 29th Company and is playing rugby (which he loves and we =
don't yet understand fully).

It seems to me that USNA really wants to retain everyone who is admitted =
and wants to be there. We tried not to push him into choosing USNA and =
often sang the virtues of NROTC (a real college life, with similar =
benefits), but he was committed. =20

The separation hasn't seemed to bother him as much as it has Gale and =
me.

We are looking forward to hearing from other subscribers and have sent =
information re USNA-NET to other Arkansas parents.

  =20
If the 3-4 Navy football team is going to have its opportunity to post
its third consecutive winning season, today's game against 4-4 Rutgers
has to be considered a must-win game.
  =20
And, if the Navy fans want the opportunity to be considered the best
tailgaters in the country, they have to make the parking lot at
Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium the most exciting place to be --
   before and after the game.
  =20
Long before the noon kickoff, 50-year-old Joe Cahn, the
self-proclaimed "Commissioner of Tailgating," will leave his 36-foot
recreational vehicle and set out to find the best tailgaters in the
   nation.
  =20
Mr. Cahn, who drives his RV designated as "The Joe Mobile" some 32,000
miles each football season, will be adjudicating the Navy tailgate
parties in his position as chief judge of the "Kentucky Fried Chicken
Ultimate Tailgate Search" contest that will decide the 10 top
   tailgating schools in he country.
  =20
Today's task is more special for Mr. Cahn than most. The man who
visits college games each Saturday and National Football League games
every Sunday and Monday night, admitted that he has an affinity for
   Navy.
  =20
"I've found some of my best tailgate stories at Navy," said the man
who left his home and his cooking school in New Orleans to do what he
calls "the ultimate job" of joining in on America's greatest community
   parties.
  =20
"The first time I came to Annapolis I met a couple who had met at a
tailgate party and had recently been married. I met someone who had
made up the best crab soup I ever tasted and they gave me a whole
Thermos of it to take with me.
  =20
I ran into the groups made up of lawyers, Navy officers, an
electrician and one guy who was out of work. That mix of people amazed
me," Mr. Cahn said. "And, I was totally enthralled the way the
graduating classes ring the perimeter of the parking area.
  =20
"I loved the idea of the group with the sign, `Class No Class' that
was made up of local people who support the Navy sports. And I love
the pageantry, the march-on, the push-ups, the signing of Blue & Gold,
that goes with Navy football because it overflows the stadium into the
   parking lots," he added.
  =20
Mr. Cahn said he tries to take in a little more than half of each of
the games he attends and he noted that when he gets into the stadium
today "there will be no greater Navy fan."
  =20
He loves to meet the fans who are tailgating and welcomes them to his
"Joe Mobile" when he's there instead of traipsing the tailgate areas.
  =20
"To be honest, I fell in love with Navy. There's a certain quality
about all the academies, but there's something about Navy that's
different," Mr. Cahn said. "Football is kept in the right perspective
because for all of the students there will be much bigger battles.
Football is a game and at Navy it remains a game, but when the
national anthem is sung before the game, it really means something.
  =20
"Tailgating has replaced the neighborhood picnic and block parties.
It's a place where you don't worry about the security you have in your
own home and it's a place where people can meet and socialize and make
new friends with something in common," Mr. Cahn explained.
  =20
This is Mr. Cahn's third year of criss-crossing the country visiting
tailgaters. The first year he only went to NFL stadiums. But when he
fell in love with the phenomenon of tailgating, he decided to also
visit as many colleges as possible.
  =20
Last week he was at University of Maryland and the Redskins game at
Jack Kent Cooke Stadium. Tomorrow he will be at the Ravens game,
Monday night at Pittsburgh and next Saturday at some Division II and
   III schools in Minnesota.
  =20
"Even though I'm looking for the top tailgating schools, there is also
a chance for people to vote for their own schools," Mr. Cahn
explained. "You can enter a vote by visiting the KFC Web site at
www.kfc.com or by calling the toll-free tailgating hotline at
   1-877-26AWARD.
  =20
"There's no reason why Navy and Annapolis can't stuff the ballot
boxes. That would be nice for the school and the town," Mr. Cahn said.
  =20
He will get to see a fly-by of a group of FA-18 Hornets from VFA 82 in
Jacksonville, Fla. The pilots will all be Naval Academy graduates.
  =20
And at halftime, the Marine Corps Silent Drill team will perform.

There has been some mention, and question, about a parents handbook. The USNA
website referred to it as a Parent's Almanac that would be available for
pickup I-Day.
We were unable to attend I-Day, and have tried in vain to obtain a copy of
this thru the 4th Class Regiment Office, and Babs Miller, Parent Coordinator -
Alumni Assn. Even looked for it when we were back PPW. Babs did say she has
a copy herself, and they were also sent out to each Parent Club President.
If anyone knows who to contact to get a copy, please share with all of us!
Thanks,

One other note Cortni is that even when the schedules are set, they can=
change right up to the last minute and even after they deploy for one=
activity. As the saying goes, they're in the Navy now and the military=
does the dictating. Parents really do get to feel like second class=
citizens a good part of the time. This is part of the reason our parent=
clubs and support are so improtant.

As an example, my older son was on the off shore sailing team and raced in=
the summer. He always had to keep the first two blocks clear until the=
sailing schedule was determined--one block for leave and one block for=
sailing. This was because a race could overlap the two blocks. Even then=
when he was due to go on his "grayhull" cruise, one of the coaches called=
the day he returned from a race and changed his orders to XO another race=
instead of doing his grayhull--which he did not do until Firstie=
summer--and then the engine broke down and they were in port the entire=
time. You just never know or are able to plan.

Good luck.

Parents, especially 2002..
On Friday, after seeing the current crisis discussion regarding the Herndon
date, I emailed Babs Miller who is the USNA liaison to the Parent Clubs.
Babs checked and told me the Herndon date was still Friday, May 21. Then I
saw another posting that reiterated the 24th, so I sent that on to Babs.
Herndon is Friday, May 21.
Apparently Carol in the Ops office is new and was reading the wrong year's
calendar.
I've included my 2 communications with Babs from today so that you can feel
comfortable with the information. I also included the date and times so that
you can put the information into perspective.

I hope that this helps with the confusion.

Pam, This is a mess. All the calendars I have call for Herndon for the
21st. However, Carol (new to me and her job by two weeks) is using some
other unpublished (to us) calendar. She told me that this will be
cleared up TODAY! Anyway, I will get the word out to you as soon as I
receive it. Thanks for letting me know that this was looming "out
there." I'll be in touch.

It's the 21st! Checked with Ops...and the calendar as published is

Dear Sir,
The information on our web site is correct. Herndon
is on the 21st of May. Unfortunately for Ms. Noon who
has just t6aken over the very demanding job in
schedules, she had a copy of the wrong information. I
just got off the phone with her and we have confirmed
the information that we have posted as still correct.
So, you can make your plans for the 21st with
confidence.

thanks for your prompt replay, however, I did look on
the Calendar or Events
prior to emailing you and it says Friday May 21st for
Herndon while Kathy Noon
in the scheduling office has told another "Mom" that it
is in fact Monday May
24th..this is very important to me since I have to trvel
from the West
Coast...I need to know when it really is....I am sorry to
bother you but after
hearing conflicting reports I need to know when to
make plane and lodging
reservations....thank you. P Neves

I think we should all take a moment to recognize true courage. The
man who wrote this column, which appeared in The Washington Times,
has probably just ended his career. -(as sent to me)
-------------------------------------

Please, Impeach My Commander in Chief

By Daniel J. Rabil

The American military is subject to civilian control, and we
deeply believe in that principle. We also believe, as
affirmed in the Nuremberg Trials, that servicemen are not
bound to obey illegal orders. But what about orders given by a
known criminal? Should we trust in the integrity of directives
given by a president who violates the same basic oath we take?
Should we be asked to follow a morally defective leader with a
demonstrated disregard for his troops? The answer is no, for
implicit in the voluntary oath that all servicemen take is the
promise that they will receive honorable civilian leadership. Bill
Clinton has violated that covenant. It is therefore Congress' duty
to remove him from office.

I do not claim to speak for all service members, but certainly
Bill Clinton has never been the military's favorite president. Long
before the Starr report, there was plenty of anecdotal evidence
of this administration's contempt for the armed forces. Yes, Mr.
Clinton was a lying draft dodger, yes his staffers have been
anti-military, and yes, he breezily ruins the careers of senior
officers who speak up or say politically incorrect things.
Meanwhile, servicemen are now in jail for sex crimes less
egregious than those Paula Jones and Kathleen Willey say Mr.
Clinton committed.

Mr. Clinton and his supporters do not care in the least about
the health of our armed forces. Hateful of a traditional military
culture they never deigned to study, Mr. Clinton's disingenuous
feminist, homosexual and racial activist friends regard the
services as mere political props, useful only for showcasing petty
identity group grievances. It is no coincidence that the media
have played up one military scandal after another during the
Clinton years. This politically-driven shift of focus, from the
military mission to the therapeutic wants of fringe groups, has
taken its toll: Partly because of Mr. Clinton's impossibly
Orwellian directives, Chief of Naval Operations Jay Boorda
committed suicide.

So Clinton has weakened the services and fostered a
corrosive anti-military culture. This may be loathsome, but it is
not impeachable, particularly if an attentive Congress can limit
the extent of Clinton-induced damage. As officers and
gentlemen, we have therefore continued to march, pretending to
respect our hypocrite-in-chief.

Then came the Paula Jones perjury and the ensuing Starr
Report. I have always known that Clinton was
integrity-impaired, but I never thought even he could be so
depraved, so contemptuous, as to conduct military affairs as was
described in the special prosecutor's report to Congress. In that
report, we learn of a telephone conversation between Mr.
Clinton and a congressman in which the two men discussed our
Bosnian deployment. During that telephone discussion, the
Commander-in-Chief's pants were unzipped, and Monica
Lewinsky was busy saving him the cost of a prostitute. This is
the president of the United States of America? Should soldiers
not feel belittled and worried by this? We deserve better.

When Ronald Reagan's ill-fated Beirut mission led to the
careless loss of 241 Marines in a single bombing, few questioned
his love of country and his overriding concern for American
interests. But should Mr. Clinton lead us into military conflict,
he
would do so, incredibly, without any such trust. After the recent
American missile attacks in Afghanistan and Sudan, my instant
reaction was outrage, for I instinctively presumed that Mr.
Clinton was trying to knock Miss Lewinsky's concurrent grand
jury testimony out of the headlines. The alternative, that this
president --who ignores national security interests, who appeases
Iraq and North Korea, and who fights like a leftover Soviet the
idea of an American missile defense -- actually believed in the
need for immediate military strikes, was simply implausible. And
no amount of scripted finger wagging, lip biting, or mention of
The Children by this highly skilled perjurer can convince me
otherwise.

In other words, Mr. Clinton has demonstrated that he will risk
war, terrorist attacks, and our lives just to save his
dysfunctional
administration. What might his motives be in some future
conflict? Blackmail? Cheap political payoffs? Or -- dare I say it
-- simply the lazy blundering of an instinctively anti-American
man? It is immoral to impose such untrustworthy leadership on a
fighting force.

It will no doubt be considered extreme to raise the question
of whether this president is a national security risk, but I must.
I
do not believe presidential candidates should be required to
undergo background investigations, as is normal for service
members. I do know, however, that Bill Clinton would not pass
such a screening. Recently, I received a phone call from a
military investigator, who asked me a variety of
character-related questions about a fellow Marine reservist. The
Marine, who is also a friend, needed to update his top-secret
clearance. Afterward, I called him. We marveled how lowly
reservists like us must pass complete background checks before
routine deployments, yet the guardian of our nation's nuclear
button would raise a huge red flag on any such security report.
We joked that my friend's security clearance would have been
permanently canceled if I had said to the investigator, "Well,
Rick spent the Vietnam years smoking pot and leading
protestsagainst his country in Britain. His hobbies are lying and
adultery. His brother's a cocaine dealer, and oh, yeah -- he
visited the Soviet Union for unknown reasons, while his countrymen
weregetting killed in Vietnam."

Do I show disrespect for this president? Perhaps it depends on the
meaning of the word "this." If Clinton were merely a spoiled
leftist taking advantage of our free society, a la Jane Fonda, that
would be one thing. But you don't make an atheist pope, and you
don't keep a corrupt security risk as commander-in-chief.

The enduring goodness of the American military character over the
past two centuries does not automatically derive from our nation's
nutritional habits or from a good job benefitsb package. This
character must be developed and supported, or it will die. Already
we are seeing declining enlistment and a 1970s-style disdain for
military service, squandering the real progress made during the
purposeful 1980s. Our military's heart and soul can survive lean
budgets, but they cannot long survive in an America that would
tolerate such a character as now occupies the Oval Office. We are
entitled to a leader who at least respects us -- not one who cannot
be bothered to remove his penis from a subordinate's mouth long
enough to discuss our deployment to a combat zone. To subject our
services to such debased leadership is nothing less than the
collective spit of the entire nation upon our faces.

Bill Clinton has always been a moral coward. He has always had
contempt for the American military. He has always had a
questionable security background. Since taking office, he has
ignored defense issues, except as serves the destructive goals of
his extremist supporters. His behavior with Paula Jones and
Kathleen Willey was bizarre and deranged -- try keeping a straight
face while watching mandated Navy sexual harassment videos, knowing
that the president's own conduct violates historic service rules to
the point of absurdity.

For a while, it was almost possible to laugh off Mr. Clinton's
hedonistic, "college protester" values. But now that we have
clear evidence that he perjured himself and corrupted others to
cover up his lies, Bill Clinton is no longer funny. He is
dangerous.

William J. Clinton, perhaps the most selfish man ever to
disgrace our presidency, will not resign. I therefore risk my
commission, as our generals will not, to urge this of Congress:
Remove this stain from our White House. Banish him from
further office. For God's sake, do your duty.

Daniel J. Rabil is a major in the Marine Corps Reserve.

Fellow USNA-NET Members,

A recent broadcast message regarding a political subject causes me to come out
from the shadows and review our Mission Statement and Rules for Operation.
While I've tried to avoid being too heavy handed regarding this topic, I think
that a reminder is now appropriate. We've had a number of new members join
since this topic was last examined over two months ago. Some more formalized
presentation to re-state the principles now seems in order. They are as
follows:

MISSION STATEMENT
=================
1. Quickly and inexpensively share information about Navy parenting between
members of the list.
2. Provide a forum to exchange ideas, tips, and views on the Navy parenting
experience.
3. Distribute relevant USNA news to members in a timely fashion.

RULES OF OPERATION
==================
1/ Messages should relate to the Mission Statement
2/ Personal attack and criticism of USNA administration are not allowed.
3/ Broadcasts offering items for sale must be forwarded through the
moderator.

Friends, I want to help create an environment which facilitates cyber-support
for all academy parents. However, having seen the problems that come with
unconstrained communication, I feel that **some** boundaries need to be
established **well** before serious problems develop.

Clearly this listserver has a focus and messages not related to it should not
broadcast. Please help us all by adhering to the above principles. It will
make our co-existence **much** more pleasant and mutually beneficial! (:>)

I welcome your comments about the above. Please send them to me directly at
<dolfnjudy@aol.com>!

Best regards,

Dolf

Ladies and Gentlemen:

Just a note to let you know that members of the
small-but-enthusiastic parents' club in Kansas are grateful for the
opportunity to exchange information. Likewise, we are sensitive to
and supportive of the recently broadcast caution regarding the
content of messages.

Our daughter Lesley is a 2d class Mid, currently residing at West
Point as part of the exchange program. She is enjoying herself very
much up north, perhaps more so because of reports that privileges
have been substantially restricted for upperclass Mids. Don't know
whether (a) this is rumor or fact, or (b) if the latter, why.

Can anyone provide authoritative information about changes in policy
relating to leave and other privileges? We would appreciate the
opportunity to separate fact from fiction on this point.

On a related subject, we also hear that the atmosphere on the Yard i
more tense than in recent times. Would also appreciate any
intelligence on this issue. In this regard I suppose I am addressin
primarily parents of Mids other than plebes as the latter might not
have much basis for comparison.

Appreciate the opportunity to visit with you.

She is enjoying herself very
much up north, perhaps more so because of reports that privileges
have been substantially restricted for upperclass Mids this year.
Don't know whether (a) this is rumor or fact, or (b) if the latter,
why. Can anyone provide authoritative information about changes in
policy relating to leave and other privileges? We would appreciate
the opportunity to separate fact from fiction on this point.

On a related subject, we also hear that the atmosphere on the Yard i
more tense than in recent times (perhaps because of policy changes?)
Would also appreciate any intelligence on this issue. In this
regard I suppose I am addressing primarily parents of Mids other tha
plebes as the latter might not have much basis for comparison.

Appreciate the opportunity to visit with you.

Regards,
Phil and Jeanine Alexander (Lesley, '00)

Greetings USNA parents.
Well, I am definitely not an expert on the exchange program or the
experience other than to say that Mike is really having a great time in
his life. LOL He is in in 9th Company, 5th wing, 4th deck, which he
tells me is commonly referred to as 5-4. The exchanges are similar I'm
sure at all of the service academies. AF had 4 cadets go to USCGA, 9 to
USMA, and 9 to USNA. I think that it is indeed an honor to attend a
military academy, and in addition to that to be able to academically,
militarily, and personally be motivated to achieve the standards that
are required in the myriad of choices that they have. Not one program is
above any of the others. Each fulfills a wonderful goal, no matter which
path they chose. The cadets find out in the second semester of their
second year if they have been accepted/chosen to participate in the
exchange. It gives them the exposure to other military services which
they will be interacting with throughout their chosen careers. Of
course, they may miss out on opportunities, but how much can anyone do?
So, I counsel him to just get out and clear the cobwebs once in a while.
Nature has a wonderful way of doing that. As Veterans day is passed now,
may each of us count our blessings with Thanksgiving coming. 11 days
until I see that smiling face at the airport, and I can't wait!

ANCHORS AWEIGH FOR HONOR AND GLORY -- THE HISTORY OF NAVY FOOTBALL will
be
shown nationally by CBS, Saturday, 21 November at 1400 Hours (2 PM).

The film, produced by NFL Films and narrated by James Coburn, chronicles

the history of Navy Football through the eyes and voices of key Navy
military figures. Viewers will see and hear from former Vietnam POW and

Naval Academy Superintendent Vice Adm William Lawrence, Desert Storm and

Desert Shield veterans Maj Gen John Hopkins and Rear Adm Thomas Lynch on

what role Navy football played in their careers as Naval leaders. The
traits of leadership are sewn throughout the film as Heisman Trophy
winners
Roger Staubach and Joe Bellino, and All-Americans Napoleon McCallum and
Captain Jeff Sapp, and Super Bowl hero Phil McConkey chronicle the story
of
football in Annapolis in the 1960s, '70s and '80s, while Maj Gen Phil
Monahan tells of the great squads of the '50s. The film begins with the

story of the 1996 Navy Team that captured the attention of the entire
Fleet
with a 9-3 campaign that came to a conclusion with a victory over the
University of California in the Aloha Bowl, coincidentally, just a few
yards away from Pearl Harbor and the Arizona Memorial. The production
is

talents
of quarterback Chris McCoy.

I thougt you'd find this of interest.
In one of my assignments as a young infantry officer, I
was sent to the 48th Infantry near Frankfurt, Germany. In
those days our prize weapon was a huge 280-mm atomic cannon.
Guarded by infantry platoons, these guns were hauled around
the forests on trucks to keep the Soviets from guessing
  their location.
One day Captain Tom Miller assigned my platoon to guard
a 280. I alerted my men, loaded my .45 caliber pistol and
jumped into my jeep. I had not gone far when I realized that
  my .45 was gone.
I was petrified. In the army, losing a weapon is
serious business. I had no choice but to radio Captain
Miller and tell him. "You what?" he said in disbelief. He
paused a few seconds, then added, "All right, continue the
  mission."
When I returned, uneasily contemplating my fate, Miller
called me over. "I've got something for you," he said,
handing me the pistol. "Some kids in the village found it
where it fell out of your holster."
"Kids found it?" I felt a cold chill.
"Yeah," he said. "Luckily they only got off one round
before we heard the shot and took the gun away." The
disastrous possibilities left me limp. "For God's sake, son,
  don't let that happen again."
He drove off. I checked the magazine and found it was
full. The gun had not been fired. Later I learned that I had
dropped it in my tent before I ever got started. Miller had
fabricated the scene about the kids to give me a good scare.
Today the army might hold an investigation, call in
lawyers and likely enter a bad mark on my record. Miller
gave me the chance to learn from my mistake. His example of
intelligent leadership was not lost on me. Nobody ever got
to the top without slipping up. When someone stumbles, I
don't believe in stomping on him. My philosophy is "Pick 'em
up, dust 'em off and get 'em moving again."

Subject: usna-net: The Cycle Starts Again - '03 Officially Represented!

Fellow USNA-NET Members,

I'd like to announce that we have subscribed our first "official" member for
the class of '03. As indicated by the enclosed message from his mother,
Connor Latham has accepted his appointment to USNA. Via a copy of this
message, I'm asking Sandy to tell us a little bit about herself and Connor by
addressing a message to usna-net@navy-usna.org

As you know, this is an exciting time for the new candidates' parents and
there will be lots of questions raised regarding prospective plebe issues. In
anticipation of this, a new listserver, USNA-PLEBE, has been established to
handle that type of traffic.

Experience has shown that the volume of traffic from enthused new parents can
grow to be substantial. That is fine for some "old salts" but others find the
message volume to be excessive. By adding a second listserver to handle this
type of E-Mail, both legitimate needs can be properly served. Either or both
(USNA-NET / USNA-PLEBE) will be able to be joined or not by everyone at their
option! Hopefully this arrangement will go far to reduce the tensions
produced by the "chatter vs non-chatter" issue which many of you have raised
to me in private correspondence.

I had intended to announce this new listserver in early January since that is
about the time when I anticipate the volume of this type of traffic will begin
to grow. By that time, I hope that a currently being developed automation
effort will be in place to handle the add / change / delete functions.
Fankly, this clerical task requires a GREAT DEAL of my time . . . which is in
short supply! Also, this "no-brain" function is best handled by a web site.

Please bear with me on introduction of USNA-PLEBE for another couple of
months. We are making progress and I'd like to adhere to the original planned
schedule for introduction of this capability. I'm just giving you some
advanced notice . . . and letting you know that opposing desires for "reduced
traffic" and "full participation" are being addressed!

Again, I hope that you all join me in welcoming Sandy to the group. "The
cycle begins again!" <grin> Hopefully our planned future environment will
provide the needed capability to address the many signficant issues she and
other '03 parents will be raising!

Best regards,

Dolf

Welcome aboard. You are in for a very exciting and emotional year and a
half. Enjoy the end tof this last year with your son as he will be a
changed person following Plebe Summer. Our son Brad (02) is comming home
for the first time in 5 months for Thankgiving in 9 short days. He will
be 19 in January. He is VERY happy but admits this is the hardest thing
he has ever done. BUT he loves it and would never change a thing. He is
in the Men's Glee Club and Varsity baseball manager.
You are in for the roller coaster ride of your life. We will be there for
you as the other parents have been there for us!
 Congrats!! Nancy
