We thought that it had applicability to Navy parents as well! I'm sure that we all thank her for the work on this **major** FAQ. As always, please send additions and corrections directly to me. Best regards, Dolf ------------- Q: Techniques for saying goodbye at the end of leave periods? A: The following summary of responses from parents was prepared by Patty Klascius, . A less abridged version is available by downloading the file "saying_goodbye". Saying goodbye is tough under any circumstances. Know that some sadness is a sign of an authentically functioning family--not something "bad". Keep a sense of humor with lots of hugs and kisses. Do whatever your family does that is special or traditional. Encourage and love them, but expect some fussing and fighting as a consequent of major stress. Help your cadet understand that each member of the family needs some time alone with him/her sometime during the leave. Let your cadet set the pace. Take lots of pictures (get them developed as double prints) while they are home, to enjoy and send later. Start/continue work on your scrapbook. Think of what a great job you did and what a great kid you have. Many parents find that it gets easier as the years go by because their cadet notices that they may have "outgrown" some of their hometown friends. Sometimes cadets actually get "bored" on a long leave and look forward to seeing the newer but stronger friends they have at West Point. It gets easier as the value of these friendships begins to replace their former relationships. Know they've been there too long when they start calling West Point "home!" Make sure *this* home is full of love and encouragement with friends and family who do the same. Cadets sometimes fear that home is changing without them and also need to see how it stays the same secure nest it always has been. We all go through children eventually growing up and leaving home. USMA just offers a more abrupt, structured way of beginning that transition. Remember that you want your children to be strong and independent. This is the first step in that process! It is training for us, too. One day our cadets are going to be heading for places around the world and facing unknown dangers. As officers they will be expected to bid farewell to loved ones for long periods and put aside personal feelings in favor of assigned missions. These cadets well know the meaning of "Duty, Honor, Country!" Start new "traditions" for the last day, recognizing it for what it is, an enjoyable and relaxing last evening. You get to talk and laugh together. Make every moment count. Always have a big hug for all family members at each parting and never fail to tell your cadet how much you love him/her and how proud you are of them. Get very busy and stay very busy for a couple of weeks. Focus on being thankful and honored by the opportunity which they have. Avoid these proven "stressors": last minute trips to friend's houses to say good-bye, last minute trips to stores, last minute packing everything. On the other hand, stress relievers have been: tuning in on old cartoons/favorite comedies, Mom checking rooms for "forgotten items," and only immediate family members present at goodbye airport, car, bus or train station. Another suggestion is letting a close friend take them to the airport. Many find that it is easier to say goodbyes at home . . . That trip to the airport and associated wait is rarely fun! Look into the eyes of your cadet and you will see a sparkle, a flame that will continue to grow over the coming years. This is the look of one who knows what his/her future will offer. Saying goodbye is often a formidable task for everyone involved, but the goals are more easily attainable if the cadet has the support and love of a family network who understands and accepts his chosen path. "I was sad when we said our goodbyes at the end of Christmas vacation plebe year. However, those times of temporary sadness actually enhance the joy four years later. My heart almost burst when I heard his name being called at graduation." *** USNA-NET post by: BEIL Dolf Moderator __________________________________________________________________ Need a book? REPLY In-Reply-To: <20434747.369933f0@aol.com> It is never too early to start preparing for CW. I started to save my money for the week as soon as he finished his plebe year. It is good to get your name on the Housefinder's list right after the CW of the class before. I was able to find a home for the week for about $1000. My mid was supposed to pay for that, but I wound up doing the payment myself (does that sound familiar to anyone?). I had a house with 3 bedrooms and a deck and back yard. It was within walking distance for my sons, but I needed to drive. If one will have handicaped people with them, for sure you must sign up early. Also, if you want several homes within walking distance to each other. The other cost will be for the dinner you take the mids' sponsor to, that is USNA tradition I was told, but a simple curteosy for a family who did so much for your mid. A schedule will help. As soon as I have time, I will e mail the CW schedule. In addition, you need to plan to attend at least 2 parties every night.......We went to 10 and John couldn't understand how I was able to handle so much acivity, with my handicap,.......where does he think the "party animal" in himcame from? If you want to do any sightseeing or shopping, you may have to plan that for another time. There is so much going on: Dant's Party ..... don't miss, the Blues and their practice are good too. If you stand by the VIP tent, you may catch a glymps of some big names. We saw Tom,what a hunk,Selleck, Ron Howard and James Earl Jones. What a treat THAT was. The VP didn't thrill me as much. There are 2 parades: the first one has the first semester officers and the Color Parade has 2nd semester officers. The prom I thought was a discrace: they had NO tablecloths on the church type table and they had punch and peanuts....no food. You may choose to bring some in. The music was good though. You can attend the farewell ball the night before, but we were partying. It is nice to meet the person behind the names your mid has spoken about for 4 years. I wore a formal for the ball; I thought it fit the occassion. There will be an afternoon party dress for the Dant's party. The food was exceptional and the melon and ice carvings showed much artistic ability. Then you will need an evening outfit for dinner. Reservations need to be made for those choosing to go to any resturant during CW. If you ask the chamber of commerce, they will sewd you a book on resturants, a map of Maryland and Annapolis. Some of us got that through AARP. So if you know any ol' geezer, they can even get you a trip planner (directions) for free. One also needs to decide who will you invite to the CW. One brother, sister and a friend came with me. However one family had over 100 of their family and friends present for the entire week. They pay their own room and board. This was the family of one of my son's sponsor brothers. Our sponsor, John VornDick charged us $6 for the party he held after the ceremony. We had several hundred there. The mids get their boards pinned on them for their new class standing, at this party. JVD usually does that for the moms and dads that cannot make it to the party. The new ensign's boards traditionally get pinned on by the 'rents. My son chose to have me and his sponsor do that honor and his dad presented him with his new cover. The cover and the sword are very expensive. The cover, in 97 cost over $80 and the saber was about $400. The mids have to pay for this on their own. 'Rents can have all their 4 year boards and pins, et al with a picture, mounted in a frame. The expenses for those things can go on and on. John chose not to waste money on the saber, as some one will always lend you one. Can't do the mounting yet, due to finances.....or lack thereof!!!! That should keep you talking for a while.Hope the info helped. Welcome Gary and = Laurii,

Sounds like your Jodie really has = her act=20 together.  I can't tell you how impressed I was when I read that = she=20 already has her Private Pilot's license.  Way to go!!

I am Sandi.  My son, Michael is = second=20 class.  He adjusted well to Academy life from the beginning.  = Michael=20 was a runner in high school but decided against any varsity = sports. =20 Instead he trains and runs in marathons.  He has run in the Marine = Corps=20 Marathon in D.C. the past two years.  There is a dedicated group of = Mids=20 who enjoy this type of torture!   (I haven't a clue where my = son got=20 his love for running - it certainly was not from me!!)

Michael's father lives in Michigan = (on an island=20 at the mouth of the Detroit River as it flows into Lake Erie).  He = has=20 always loved the water, so I suppose that Navy makes sense.  His = decision,=20 his junior year in high school to go to the Academy came as a real = surprise to=20 both his father and me.  But there is no doubt in my mind that this = was the=20 right choice for him.  The young men and women who make this kind = of choice=20 generally have an intuitive sense of what is right for them.   =

I live just west of Cleveland, = almost within=20 "spitting" distance of Lake Erie.  The winds that howl = across the=20 lake can be brutal - perhaps not as bad as your little town's claim to = fame -=20 but as I look out my window right now I am watching a huge dump truck = dumping=20 snow into the little lake across the drive from my apartment.  I am = really=20 tired of the snow!!!

Michael is flying in to spend the = extended MLK=20 weekend with me and my fiance, MIke.  It is always a great feeling = having=20 him nearby.  He has grown and matured so much in the past 2 1/2=20 years.  Although he still has problems with clothing and the = floor!! =20 I guess when he is in Bancroft he has to be so neat that when he is = away, he=20 lets it all slide.  We can not find the floor for as long as he is=20 visiting!!!  But we don't mind at all.

Then, he will be flying in to = Cincinnati on the=20 weekend of Feb. 6th to "walk me down the aisle" for my = wedding. =20 He will be in full dress whites.  I am wondering who will get the = most=20 looks, him or me!!!

Mike and I put together a web site for thh Northeast = Ohio=20 Naval Academy Parents' Club which is filled with good information and = many=20 excellent links to other Academy and related sites.  you might want = to=20 check it out.  There are also links to other Parents' Club = sites.  Its=20 address is:  http://www.neonap.org   = ; Let us=20 know what you think.

Lengthy note, I know, but I tend to = be long=20 winded.  If you have any questions, feel free to ask.  If I = don't know=20 the answer, I am sure someone on the list serve will.  = Congratulations on=20 raising a fine and focused young woman.  I know how proud of her = you must=20 be.  All of us feel the same about our sons and = daughters!!

You can make reservations there 4 years in advance, but you also may change your mind when the CW comes close. There will be many people you will want to invite and may decide on a house instead. That's OK, I still made the reservation for CW and they send you a notice...either pay up or loos the room. By then I had decided and put a deposit on a house. I heard for CW the rates went up to 250/ night. What a rip off. For the length of time one stays there for CW, it is much cheaper to rent a small house. Some of their mid friends come to visit for the fresh home made cookies and chow. If you are going to have a party you can serve home made food, ......less expensive. Last night Jim and I witnessed two wonderful wins by Navy's womens' and mens' basketball team in an intense battle with Army at West Point. Although Navy fans were outnumbered, the D&B and cheerleaders more than made up for it. For those who asked about Service Selection Night, I discovered from my son last night via telephone, how the event unfolds. It is a two step process. Each Company Officer calls, in alphabetical order, each firstie into his office where the Co.Offc announces the service that has accepted him/her. The others wait in the Company ward room for their turn. This will occur this year on Wed.27th. Then on Friday, the 29th this year, Firsties wait in their Company area for a public announcement that will call out the numbers of the Order of Merit, ex.numbers 1-25 are called at the same time. When his/her Order of Merit is announced, he/she will go to Memorial Hall (that huge room directly at the top of the stairs in Bancroft)or another location for their service area. What time slots remain for the start of their service select school dates - are there for them to choose. Then, Friday eve, the great celebration begins. The excitement is starting to mount! I could hear it in all the voices in the room - Each midn company officer has a phone in his room - usually the best room in the area - lucky the roommate who shares that room and lucky that parent who can call that mid. I begged, borrowed and took some of my mortgage money to make the ENTIRE week. It was well worth it. Some 'rents didn't show up for the entire week and I could see the hurt in their faces because "their" mom or dad were not there for the entire show. The mids are so very excited. People know when CW is now...there can't be any excuse worth hurting your mid for. Court dates can be delayed (for those who are members of the bar), meetings and trainings can happen on another day. If starting a new job...tell them off the bat that you will work late days and nights as this is important for your mid. One of the mids parents couldn't attend as they were too poor to pay for any portion of the flight or stay. There should be a means to help at least ONE parent attend, even if it just for the big day. Sunday-- all the baccalaureate services are held. The Mass we attended was just a beautiful service. All who are members of that religious club received a special gift for their services. Usually there is a USMC orientation. Monday--Dedication Parade,Alumni Asso. picnic,Herndon and a glee club performance-Tickets needed for the parade as well asthe concert. Tuesday---The Blues have their practice, Gospel choir,1st Regiment reception, 2nd Reg. dinner in King Hall. We didn't go to this one. We went to a few parties instead. Tickets needed for choir and din. Wednesday--Blues perform,Glee club, last nights receprion and din are switched, Graduation Ball for all firsties mids and families.PLEASE make certain they will be having table cloths on all tables. There were none for us and it looked terrible...definitely not NAVY style. Here we were all dressed to the 9's and the church like folding tables had no cloth on of any kind. It would have been better if we brought in some food as all the have are peanuts and punch. The music was super. Thursday--Color parade (tickets) Prize and award ceremony. Some of the mids will be receiving an award from a specific subject area: engineering, political science et al.,Farewell Ball for all mids and 'rents. Friday-- Gates at the stadium open at 0730, procession at 0915 or so, Ceremony at 1000. Parking is a disaster--es[especially if the pres is speaking]. The Blues do a fly by. Have your group together so when your mid gets the diploma, you can all stand up and give him a great cheer.I have never, and probably will never see my son show any emotion like he showed when he finally attained his goal. Boards are about $80- someone pins them on, usually mom and dad, unless the mid wishes someone else to do the big deed, Also the cover gets presented to the new officer. Hopefully, you have already made your reservations and know where you will be staying. Prices go up for CW (I HATE what they call good business.....I call it greed. Our sponsor, John VornDick, has been one for over 20 years. He sent us several sheets of infor for CW. What a great guy he is...strict with his mids, but that is super. He was a father to my son, who sorely needed one. If one person who has a scanner will notify the others that s/he has a scanner and will be the one to send to me then I will only have to make one copy. Thanks By the way, 6 rolls of film was not enough. There is a camera store in the town, but his prices are too high. You would do best to bring it along. A cocktail dress, I wore a gown(it was the only thing that fit me)for the ball and wore pants or shorts for everything else except the Dants garden party. Any toddler will love to see the parades and jets and all the mids in uniform. Little babies may have a problem, so if they are not newborn..it would be easier to leave them home...There are many hours in the sun. The toddlers will not get the sleep they need, but they will adjust, as there is something for them every day, to look forward to. To go out for the night of partying, perhaps you would consider bringing a teen to stay with the babies at night. I brought my cuisinart and Kitchen aid to make and bake. I also brought some food from home. I may have mentioned that as well as the tradition of taking the sponsor out for a dinner..........mom's or dad's who are divorced, allow no one to spoil your time with your mid. I set my mind to that and I had a ball. I would not be left out of ANYTHING. You need to tell your mid, that for this time (as well as weddings) how you feel about this. I had a blast. My x with his wife actually took me to the most expensive resturant for the sponsor dinner ( I am on comp and could not afford to pay for my din and 1/2 the sponsors either. I made out like a bandit! USNA and CW are one of my favorite topics, I could go on and on. Need more info, just e mail me. To every question we got the cheery response "GREAT", he started each of his statements with a "Guess WHAT?!". I do think Brad had his "Dark Ages" last semester. He was in the middle of a break up with the "home town" girl, was NOT going to have a 4.0 that he always had in High School, had 2 Prof's that he really had a tough time with and VERY much needing to sleep and be pampered at home. They all go through rough times at different times and you are right, tons of care packages and emails. Last semester we talked about a lot of neutral things, ie NOT the academy or things going on here that we knew would make him feel left out. We talked about what there was to look forward too and how far he really had come. Patience and prayer will ease your mind a BUNCH! Nancy &&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&& & Nancy A. That is fine and is one of the reasons for USNA-NET's existence. However, there are some members who have expressed a desire for "just the facts" and don't want to receive non-informational messages ("chat"). Both of these perspectives are valid and, IMHO, should be accomodated within our cyber-support network. To accomplish our system's goals, we're activating the USNA-PLEBE listserver. It will operate on the same principles as USNA-NET but is a better vehicle for "attitude" rather than "factual" E-Mail messages. To begin with, everyone will be subscribed to both nets. You can unsubscribe from either or both as your appetite for more / less message traffic dictates. A broadcast will be sent soon from USNA-PLEBE giving more details on that net's operation. As you can imagine, the administrative work associated with handling the add/change/delete function for these two nets will grow to be substantial. I'm very happy to report that Mike Zets has agreed to co-moderate these two listservers with me. Hopefully he will be able to devote the time, attention, and technical expertise needed to successfully develop the USNA environment. As a practical matter, I expect to soon be in a secondary role with the USNA listservers! (:>) I know that Mike has a lot of enthusiasm and ability which he is bringing to this task. His address is . By now you've all received several NEW email messages = about a few changes that are taking place at USNA-Net. While this = message does run a little long, please take the time to read it all. I = will try to explain everything that has happened and what (if anything) = you should do. First, a bit of history. USNA-Net was begun in June of '98 for the purpose of providing a quick = and inexpensive (aka free) way for all Parents of USNA Midshipmen to = communicate with each other no matter where they lived or how far apart = they were in other regards. From the start, it was planned to have two = separate but interconnected listservers - USNA-Net and USNA-Plebe. = Initially, only ONE of these lists was put into service. It was = USNA-Net. Everyone who subscribed was put on USNA-Net. As of TODAY, the second list is operative. For all of you who thought = that there were two lists all along, it wasn't so. But now that Dolf = has recruited me to assist, we finally have the manpower to get the = second list going full speed ahead. By themselves, the USNA lists = aren't that much work but when you realize that Dolf administered almost = two hundred lists, getting another major list started made the = assistance necessary. Next, what happened today. Everyone who was a subscriber to USNA-Net has automatically become a = member of USNA-Plebe while STAYING a member of USNA-Net. (I'm beginning = to call it Dolf's Two-for-One Sale.) You received at least three email = announcements, as follows... - An Announcement from Dolf telling you about USNA-Plebe and about = me, - A message from Majordomo telling you that you were subscribed to = USNA-Plebe, - A message from Majordomo explaining the Help features of = USNA-Plebe. Also you received two Test Messages, one for USNA-Net and one for = USNA-Plebe. The first two were self-explainitory but the third (the Help stuff) = could have been very confusing for those of you that are new to the = group. It was automatically generated in Austin, TX (where our network = server is located) by Majordomo. It was actually a message all new = subscribers to West-Point listservers are supposed to receive. USNA-Net = information was appended to it but some of the addresses and = instructions pertain only to West-Point. I'll be sending out a NAVY = version in the next day or so. Next, what you should do. If you want to be on both lists - DO NOTHING! If you want to be removed from one list or the other - send me an email = and I'll take care of the change ASAP. You should address it to = mzets@mail.com and put UNSUBSCRIBE in the subject just so I don't miss = it. We can get you off of a list in a matter of minutes from when I = read the email. Please remember to tell me WHICH list to remove you = from. If I have a question, you'll hear from me. Otherwise, it will be = done as you request. Next, which list should you belong to. If so, USNA-Net is your contact list of choice. USNA-Net will = still give you timely announcements of everything that's going on, = changes in schedules, important news, late breaking information, etc. = It will remain THE source of advice and information that you've come to = value as a USNA-Net member. Should you belong to both? Absolutely! Especially parents of Second Class, Firstie and even Grad = parents. We need experienced parents and friends of all Mids to share = membership in both lists. After all, if you don't subscribe to = USNA-Plebe, how will you ever be able to help the Plebe and Youngster = parents with advise that only experience can provide? Wouldn't it be a = shame to let the same things happen to them that you learned the hard = way? The penalty for dual membership will be increased message traffic = and some duplication of information but nothing that should be too hard = to endure. Do you have to belong to both? No. That's why there are now TWO lists. We see USNA-Plebe as being a = special place for Plebe parents and those who offer advise or just want = to hang out with the younger crowd. :>) We see USNA-Net as being a Joe = Friday kind of message service with a "just-the-facts-Ma'am" sort of = flavor. Either way, you now have a choice. Next, A little bit about me. Since Dolf announced my Co-Moderatorship and then ran off to a = "supposed" business meeting in Los Angeles, I guess the balance of the = introduction will have to come from me. Some of you know me already = since I'm Webmaster for www.neonap.org, the NorthEast Ohio Naval Academy = Parents' Club Website. In two weeks, I will be marrying the most = wonderful woman in the whole wide world, Sandi Stoker, who's son, = Michael, is Second Class, 10th Company. We will be living in Westlake, = Ohio (Cleveland Suburb on the shores of Lake Erie). I just finished a = tour of duty (TAD) with the enemy, co-authoring the West Point = Bicentennial Website at www.west-point.org/family/bicent along with Dolf = and some very talented and dedicated parents of West Point Cadets. When I'm not punching keys for USNA-Net, I'll be pulling duties as = Webmaster for www.navy-usna.org which is OUR very own site for these = listservers. With a little time we envision it growing to become a very = useful and full bodied website for USNA Parents. Then in my spare time, = I'm running a mid-sized custom machinery builder here in Cleveland. If = you need more details about Sandi and me, check out our personal website = at www.cyberdrive.net/~poetscorner. It even has a picture. LASTLY, we're looking for your help... We need more membership to really make these listservers work as we = all want them to. Tell other USNA Parents about the lists and nag them = into subscribing. They won't be sorry. Most of them don't even know = that we exist. If you're a member of a Parents' Club get the word out through the = Club. It lists hotels etc. but not availability and requirements. So FYI on motel/hotel accomodations for 5/21-5/27 (Herndon, Ring Weekend,Commssioning) I report what I learned = as of 7/98 when I called to get the cheapest rates and the requirements- rates may now be higher. 1. Day's Inn (410) 974-4440- requires a 3 night minimum ($139.per night) 2. Wyndham (410) 266-1555)- requires a 5 night minimum ($149 per night) 3. Residence Inn(410)573-0300 - required a written contract signed for the 5 nights. I refused to travel down to sign it. 4.Hampton Inn (410) 571-0200- requires a 5 night minimum ($129 per night) 5. Loew's (410)263-7777- a 4 night minimum ($189. per night) $7. per car per night fee 6. Marriot Waterfront(800)228-9290 (410)268-2641 - 5 night minimum ($179. per night) $10. per car parking fee (suite guests needed to be interviewed!) 7.Holiday Inn (410)224-3150-, requires a 5 night minimum ($129) This past fall, we had season football tickets with the Annapolis B&B owners - they told us then they were all booked for the week of 5/21-5/28. However, they did say that at the last minute, plans can change. I have family staying in Baltimore, and Bowie,Md and across the Bay Bridge in Grasonville and Kent Is. - they do not have minimum night requirements and tend to be cheaper. The Econolodge in Annapolis was a place that I would never stay at again, for the price - it should have been a palace but it was a horror. We have the week in the Annapolis Inn, friends have the Corner Cupboard Inn, the Chez Amis, and the Flag House Inn for the week. I've checked with my friend who is the Pres. of the B&B Assoc. in Annapolis to see if there were any B&B availabilities - as of now they are all taken. If you don't have a reservation yet for Herndon, persistance is required - plans change, people cancel - unfortunately firsties can be dismissed even in the last week (happened to three last year right before graduation) and you may get the chance to book less than required at the last minute. The biggest lesson we learned is to book early if you think that there is the slightest chance you will visit the Yard - you can always cancel!! You'll get the cheaper rates before they impose the requirements etc. Keep a detailed log of all your reservations and confirmation numbers in case you cancel. We are on a waiting list for reservations for next football season during homecoming, and games during the sailboat/powerboat show! I waited too late - I tried to book last December. I hope this info helps you. The enclosed FAQ provides some information on this issue. Please note the last paragraph. It is NEVER EVER appropriate to send the same message to both listservers. That would result in "techno- litter" without any offsetting benefit since all members on USNA-PLEBE are automatically on USNA-NET . . . a clear and unnecessary duplication of message traffic! As a guideline, I'd suggest that plebe parents use USNA-PLEBE exclusively. There are many parents available to provide assistance and there is virtually no downside to this approach. I'm sure that the distinction and proper use of the two lists will become clear with the passage of time! (:>) Best regards, Dolf --------- Q: What is the difference between USNA-NET and USNA-PLEBE? A: Plebe parents need a more nurturing environment in which "basic" topics and feelings can be discussed at length. That is entirely appropriate. However, the message volume can be great and the "news" content virtually zero for someone who has been through it one, two, three, or more times. With only one listserver, that would mean that a lot of "basic" messages would need to be read to obtain a few which have significant informational value. Some members find that objectionable. By providing a second listserver devoted to this type of traffic, both legitimate needs can be satisfied without anyone losing their main reason for joining our cyber-support family. Anyone is free to (un)subscribe to either or both nets. All new members are automatically subscribed to both. In general, plebe parents will want to send their traffic to USNA-PLEBE. The flexibility of dual listservers permits free and full presentation of "factual" parenting questions and simultaneously eliminates voluminous "chatty" messages if they are not wanted. One thing should be kept in mind. It is **NEVER EVER** appropriate to send the same message to both listservers. This practice produces duplicate messages to a very high percentage of the members and is NEVER appropriate. It represents "techno-litter" at its worst! *** USNA-NET post by: BEIL Dolf Moderator ~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~. by westpoint.west-point.org (8.9.1/8.9.1) id IAA26181 for usna-net-outgoing; Sun, 24 Jan 1999 08:41:23 -0600 (CST) From: MTBLEAU@aol.com Date: Sun, 24 Jan 1999 09:45:45 EST To: usna-net@navy-usna.org Subject: usna-net: Need recommendation for B&B for April Hi Everyone.
