The contest, which pits the defending Patriot League champion-Midshipmen against their counterparts from West Point, is slated to be broadcast in the following television markets: New York metropolitan area (WCBS); Albany, N.Y. (WRGB); Baltimore, Md. (WJZ); Washington, D.C. (WUSA), Norfolk, Va. (WTKR), Richmond, Va. (WTVR) and Salisbury, Md. (WBOC). It will also be available at the following satellite coordinates: Telstar 5-C, Transponder 7. In addition, the game can be seen via Direct TV and will be broadcast world-wide by Armed Forces Radio and Television. Play-by-play man Craig Bolerjack, who shouldered announcing duties for ESPN during Army's Independence Bowl contest against Auburn in 1996, and veteran color analyst Bill Raftery will call the courtside action for CBS. In an ironic twist, Raftery coached against Army head coach Pat Harris during Harris' playing days at the Academy. Raftery served as head coach at Seton Hall at the time. Tipoff is slated for 1:05 p.m. Saturday at Alumni Hall in Annapolis, Md. The beautiful Alumni Trophy, awarded annually to the winner of one of two regular-season pairings between Army and Navy, will be at stake on Saturday. The trophy consists of two silver plates 15" in diameter, one with the U.S. Military Academy seal and one with the seal of the U.S. Naval Academy. It is the gift of Capt. Victor Delano, USN (Ret.), a 1941 alumnus of the Naval Academy. Presentation of the trophy will take place immediately following the game. Navy has retained possession of the hardware each of the past five seasons. In fact, Navy has dominated the series in recent years, winning 27 of the last 31 meetings between the clubs and 16 of 17 since Army swept the first two Patriot League clashes between the arch rivals back in 1991-92. The Midshipmen hold a 53-35 advantage in the all-time matchup, which dates back to 1920. It will mark the fourth consecutive season that CBS Sports has televised the Army-Navy Alumni Trophy clash. Two of the previous three televised battles have been decided by four points or less. In 1997, Navy won by the score of 54-51 at West Point; Navy prevailed 68-64 in Annapolis two years ago; the Mids broke open a close contest in the second half last year at Christl Arena en route to an 87-66 triumph. *** SPORTS-NET post by: BEIL Dolf Parent *** USNA-NET post by: DICKEY Jeff&Sam 02 Troy ~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~. by westpoint.west-point.org (8.9.1/8.9.1) id UAA24248 for usna-net-outgoing; Wed, 3 Feb 1999 20:09:26 -0600 (CST) Date: Wed, 03 Feb 1999 21:23:27 -0500 From: Some Cully To: usna-net@navy-usna.org Subject: usna-net: [Fwd: ARMY-NAVY Basketball - Sun] Content-Disposition: inline Date: Wed, 03 Feb 1999 20:48:54 -0500 From: Some Cully To: usna-net@usna-navy.org Subject: ARMY-NAVY Basketball - Sun Re: A-N Basketball = I have tickets to the men's Army-Navy basketball game on SUNDAY,- not Sat - as just sent over the list serve. So here it is: I have a son, Llewellyn, who is a youngster at the Naval Academy. We live in South Africa - in a small town called Harrismith - and also have two daughters (17 and 12). My husband is a US Citizen (from a family of West Point graduates), but I am South Africa. I met my husband in South Africa when he came out here twenty-five years ago, ostensibly to lecture in English at a university in Johannesburg, but in reality to flyfish and shoot. We have lived in South Africa ever since. My husband is a professor of English at a university near the town in which we live and I teach linguistics at a university in Johannesburg, commuting between the two places (a round trip of 700 kms. every week). I leave home on Monday mornings and usually return on Wednesday afternoons. On Thursday and Fridays I recover from my stint of lecturing and travelling, and do my marking, preparation, supervision of postgraduate dissertations and so on at home, staying in contact with my department by email, fax and telephone. Llewellyn and the girls are all US citizens like their father, and all had dual nationality until Llewellyn had to give up his South African citizenship when he entered the academy. He spent a year in Yuma, Arizona as a Rotary exchange student, for his last year of high school before he went to the academy. He was also accepted at West Point, but finally (after much decision-making) chose the Navy. His year as a plebe was a nightmare to me, especially since I was so far away and I shed many, many tears for my son in that year. His American grandmother also died in Washington DC that year, which removed his closest family contact in the US. There are still uncles and cousins on the Evans side of the family whom he is getting to know. His aunt (my sister) lived in Sacramento, CA until the end of last year and he spent his short vacations with her. She also acted as "Mom" on induction day because Llewellyn didn't want me to be there crying my eyes out. So I went to a conference in England to keep my thoughts occupied elsewhere. Anyway, we got through that first year somehow, but I wish I had known about this list at the time. Llewellyn is now enjoying his time at the academy and has made a number of good friends, not least of whom are a South African family in Annapolis who provide him with a home from home. I was put into contact with them through the kind lady who runs the "I love my mid" care package business in Annapolis when I ordered a care package for my son on the internet. Llewellyn played football on the school varsity team in Arizona, as the kicker and punter. He couldn't really play in any other position because he had never played football before, so he was using the skills he had acquired in school rugby in South Africa. He tried out as a kicker for the Academy football team but didn't make it, so he has gone back to playing rugby. I try to get as much information about what is happening at the Academy as I can, but given the distance between us and Annapolis, this is not always easy. I hope that I'll get more on this list and get to know some of the other parents this way too. This is a 10 point increase over 1998. Only "Wall Street," rose more among the 14 institutions listed, with a 12 point increase. * 1999's figure also marks the second highest level ever for the military over the 33-year history of this question in the Harris poll (second to 1993's 57%). The Harris Poll's Humphrey Taylor said, "Recent events in Iraq may have helped." * In contrast to the 1998 poll, when all the listed institutions showed increased public confidence levels over 1997, confidence levels in some held steady and others dropped in 1999. For example, both "television news" and "law firms" showed declines from already low levels. Although sidelined from a special warfare assignment by asthma, she's looking forward to serving her country as a restricted line officer. "My sponsor dad actually got me interested and told me all about it -- well, except for the secret stuff," the senior from Crofton said. "From then on I thought it would be cool." Midshipman Paradeise was one of this year's 879 seniors who found out their naval future last week during service assignment week. The culmination of the students' four years, this is where academy officials match the mids' career choices with open spots in the fleet -- whether it involves planes, subs, warships, the Marines or the supply corps. Midshipmen pay back their tax-funded education by spending the next five years in billets made up of 18 communities. Almost 94 percent of the mids received their first-choice community, up from 90 percent last year. The most populated billets include the perennial winners: Navy pilots and surface warfare. For Midshipman 1st Class Christopher Brianas of Annapolis, winning a coveted spot as a Navy pilot was a dream come true. "I love to fly, and now I can do it for free in the Navy," said Midshipman Brianas, who has one brother who's a graduate and another who's still a mid. The screening process began last fall. Mids met with interviewers who examined the students' qualifications. The method is a departure from previous years, when mids with the highest grades had first dibs. During the screening process, mids found out if they could be unrestricted line officers, physically qualified for several billets. Restricted line officers end up working in intelligence, cryptology or the civil engineering corps. "We poll each class during their second class year," said Marine Corps Maj. Timothy Murphy, academy career information officer. "That way we'll know what their interests are." The midshipmen then accessed an Internet site to pick the top three or so choices open to them. Each community -- with the exception of surface warfare -- has a ceiling for the number of midshipmen it can accept. The communities pick the mids who are most qualified. The mids learned their fate Jan. 26 as company officers gathered them around and passed out envelopes naming the billets. "Almost everyone in my company got what they wanted," said Midshipman Paradeise. "The one who didn't didn't seem disappointed, at least on his face." Last month, mids picked their ships and met informally with officers from different communities. Midshipman 1st Class Jeffrey Tamulevich of Annapolis was disqualified from becoming a Navy pilot because of bad eyesight, so he chose surface warfare instead. Midshipman Tamulevich later strolled up to a board containing port names and chose Norfolk, where he'll join the destroyer USS Gonzalez. After assignment, mids usually take a night on the town, which is worry-free -- except for future ensigns headed for submarine warfare. Because the government pays a bonus to submariners, those mids are expected to buy drinks, said Midshipman 1st Class Frank Norcross Jr. of Severna Park. "We just stayed at the Officers Club and ran up a tab before going out," he said. For some students, the process can be agonizing. But Midshipman 1st Class Corey Poorman of Severna Park wasn't nervous at all. After an interview with the submarine service in January, he knew he would make it. At the interview, he met with engineers who hit him with an arsenal of physics and chemistry questions, followed by five minutes with an admiral before finding out if he made the cut. "That was a long day," he said. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Published Feb. 07, 1999, The Capital, Annapolis, Md. I feel the need to comment on this statement since = I'm=20 beginning to realize there is some confusion about what this listserver = is all=20 about.

It's about the free and efficient communication = between USNA=20 Parents and Friends.  It's about sharing experiences and thoughts = about=20 Navy Parenting.  It's about asking questions of our members who = might have=20 an answer or who might also share a common concern about our Mids or = what's=20 going on at the Yard or anything else that touches the lives of our Mids = or=20 members.

Sure! It's NOT about political activism or debates over government=20 spending, the Super Bowl or commercial enterprise.  Remember, it's = YOUR=20 listserver and as members, you SHOULD be able to communicate freely = without=20 worrying about if what you say is "out-of-bounds" or = not.

I see it this way...  If several USNA parents were gathered=20 face-to-face at their Parents' Club Picnic and the topic came up, why = shouldn't=20 it be a topic suitable for our Net?

Just use some discretion.  Be courteous to others.  = Respect their=20 time and the possibility that sometimes the written word doesn't always = come=20 across the way it was intended.  Humorous sarcasm doesn't always = sound as=20 funny after being sent 12,000 miles to an email inbox.  (Let's face = it.  If I could write jokes for a living, would I be doing this in = my spare=20 time?)

There are currently 97 members = in USNA-Net=20 (most of these represent at least two parents) and the number is growing = but=20 you'd never know it for the amount of traffic on the Net.  The = listserver=20 is "nothing" if you don't participate.   It only = serves a=20 real purpose if its members write as well as read.

I encourage you all to participate and make this listserver a truly = valuable part of USNA Parenting.  Just keep the "Plebe" = stuff on=20 USNA-Plebe and the general USNA stuff on USNA-Net.

It's really quite simple.

Thanks for your time.

We found this listserver while trying to find out all we can about the Naval Academy and what we and our son (Greg) can expect. He has accepted an appointment to the Class of 2003. We are Maggie and Jim Roberts and live in the Spring Branch area of Houston, Texas. Greg played football and is now deep into track. When he went to the Academy in early November for his visit, he spent some time with a Plebe that ran track with him in high school and is on the Navy track team. She convinced him that he can make the track team and since he got his offer of of appointment, he barely touches the ground whether walking or running. He says just getting his dream of going to the Academy is unbelievable enough, but the real possibility of being involved in varsity sports is over the top. We look forward to learning a lot from everyone else's experiences; and like another letter mentioned, "our buttons are busting"! GO NAVY! - BEAT ARMY! Dear=20 Alumni,

As you know, the development of a strategic plan for the = Academy=20 has been at

Additionally,=20 we will establish an anonymous means for anyone to = provide

This planning process, which will conclude in July, is = absolutely=20 critical to
the development of an executable "blueprint for=20 action," and will only be as

Quite a few of you have links in one way or another (mostly through friends) with South Africa, which is also nice to know. It makes me feel less isolated here from what is going on at the Academy. Thank you also for all the offers to make contact with my son. I'll respond personally to all your emails when I have a little more time. It is the beginning of our academic year now (first lectures were this week), and I am snowed under with preparation for a number of new courses and with preparing reading lists for all my newly-registered research students. We have just overhauled our whole curriculum - undergraduate and graduate. So my choice at the moment is either to appear rude by not responding to each individually, or to fumble my way through the next weeks of lectures and interviews with students. I am in Johannesburg (and away from home) from Mondays to Wednesdays, so I don't even read my home email during that time if I am very busy at work. If I am not too busy, I sometimes download my home email at work and go through it there. One of the replies said to thank my husband for keeping the US safe - so I think I need to clarify what I said about my husband's West Point connections: his family (father, grandfather, uncle and others) were West Point graduates. My husband and his brothers broke the West Point connection and just basked in the reflected glory of things like their uncle appearing on national television as the "head of the long gray line". My husband has been in South Africa, not as a US military officer, but as a university professor of English. He claims his maths was too bad for him to be accepted at the Point. My son, luckily, inherited his mathematical ability from the other side of the family - or from his grandfather - so he is the one who is continuing the Evans military tradition. Greg &I are recent transplants from Houston where we were both involved in the US Space Program. Now Greg is with a defense firm - and when Jeremy started at the Academy in June '96, I started medical school (- we will graduate within 10 days of each other!). Jeremy is my son and Greg's step-son. He is the youngest of the four we have between us. Regards to all the Mid parents out there -- I'm so very proud of all our Mids! Our son Mark Minukas is a "firstie" and is in the third company. We can hardly believe that graduation is only a few short months away. It seems like only a year ago that he was a high school, graduating and leaving us for plebe summer at the USNA. The Academy experience has been very good for Mark. He has done very well academically. He was on Navy's golf team but decided to drop from the team this past fall. We know it was a tough decision for him because he likes the game so much. Mark has a color perception vision deficiency which restricted him from many of the options available to midshipmen upon graduation. He is very happy though that he was selected into the Civil Engineer Corps and hopes to continue in the field of underwater construction. Graduate school is an option for him too and he is waiting for final word from UC Berkeley, Texa A&M and MIT. If anyone has any questions we wuld be most happy to try to answer them. Not only is our empty nest empty, but our little "flegling" has us on a roller coaster of emotions! NEVER in the 18 years that we lived with him has there been so many wonderful ups and low, low, downs! But honestly, it has been a wonderful ride. I hope it levels off soon though! Tripp Glasgow is a gymnast and has finally achieved a life-long goal of competing NCAA. He is loving it. This weekend the team competes against ARMY. He wants a star on that letter sweater so bad he can taste it! I hope the entire team earns it! Academics for him has been an eye-opener. He never worked so hard in all his life! I think he finally has a handle on it this semester though. We have no idea what is yet to come but look ahead with good expectations. My husband Rick and I hope to meet as many parents as possible when we go to Annapolis for that infamous Herndon climb. Welcome to all of the new members! We are finally settling in to our rental house in the Greenville, SC area and beginning the biggest test of a marriage -- building a house! Are there any net members living in the area?? I am looking for the local Parents' Club and also the local Blue & Gold officer. I know that some emailed me in the past but through the chaos of the move, I lost the correspondence! We sold our house without listing it, it wasn't a company move so we did our own packing -- packed the house that we had lived in for over 15 years in 2 and a half weeks -- thus, the long recovery period! We plan on witnessing Herndon -- our daughter who is a junior at the Air Force Academy will be there too -- the timing worked out! We are also going to USAFA for graduation -- it will be a busy time! I know that on Parents' Weekend at USAFA, members of the net meet over dinner -- any ideas as to whether that is feasible for us? Back to the boxes!
