Help -- Are there any boxing parents out there that can tell when
Brigade Reginonals are/where? My son Arthur Ball Class of 02 is on the
boxing team and won't know till after the Regionals whether he is coming
home for spring break or going to Colorado, with the Boxing Club. Anyone
know if this information is posted anywhere? I checked the USNA homepage
but since this is a club sport I didn't see anything.

Any great ideas for last minute airfares? Anyone driving from the
Academy ot St.Louis or close? I could meet half way. Any ideas ? This
maybe a fruitless search, since he may win and will go to Colorado. But
I like a Plan B.

Did anyone ever post a message reply about a shuttle or transportation
from Washington, Dulles to the Academy. Thanks Gerri. Have enjoyed all
the communications and thanks for the information about the Discovery
Channel airing, our son Arthur was a plebe when they were there and they
interviewd him at length and followed his company around Plebe summer. I
was looking for when it would air. Keep us posted on new information.
Thanks Gerri Ball

I
There is a shuttle from DCA that can be reserved for a transport to USNA.
It is the Super Shuttle.
I'll try looking for the number on the internet, because I haven't had a
chance to locate it at home yet.
The shuttle is $60 for one person, $5 for each additional. The shuttle picks
up outside baggage claim and drives straight to the yard, or elsewhere that is
prearranged. They do take credit cards.
We have used the shuttle several times with no problem.

I'll post more as soon as I find the phone number.

My son just received his wings and the day after, like you said,
starts his 8 years of payback. This extended length of time it took him
to get these wings is due to his placement in his graduating class. He
had decided not to do much studying at the USNA and as a result, he did
not leave for Pensacola until October, after commissioning. Had he done
better in class and applied himself he would have been right in the first
group.
Can someone explain to me WHY the NAVY sends their grads to
officer's training for 2 weeks in Pensacola? He was in San Antonio. Was
sent for officer's training; back to San Antonio to pack then he goes back
to Jacksonville. He will be sent to Brunswick Maine, his final billet,
for survival training. Then it is back to Jacksonville so he can learn
about P 3's, which is what he will be flying. All the rest of the stuff,
I can appreciate, the 2 weeks at officer's school after spending 4 years
at the USNA is just mind boggling to me. Wasn't the USNA good enough
training?
If someone who has been there can answer my question, it will be
greatly appreciated. Thanks

Dear Donna,

My son's sponsor - she always has at least eight mids each year - picked
up all of her sponsored mids from the airport, no matter what the time
of day or night. She even made several runs back and forth and she is
not unusal in this assistance. Has your son checked with his sponsor
yet? Also, several mids have shared a cab and split the cost - it was
all unplanned, they just looked around the airport for any mid who
needed to share the ride.

Well, everyone's been quiet about the gathering at Herndon and I had an
idea. How about we meet at Herndon, with out folding chairs and coffee
in hand (a picnic, maybe). This way we will get our "spot", we can save
places for each other until the big event(as we will all want to explore
and shop) and we don't have to worry about getting any inside
accomodations. Of course, rain could pose a problem?
Just a thought.

Dear Plebe Parents --
I'm enjoying reading all your plans for Herndon. We desperately wish that we
could join you. We, too, are Plebe parents, but we have a second son
graduating from high school just 21 hours before Herndon and as our oldest
(Darren '02) has been in the limelight so much in the past couple of years,
Nathan deserves his turn. Therefore, we made the decision to stay home( which
is further complicated by the fact that I am a public school teacher and the
21st is the last day of school and it is a major no-no to skip out on the last
day or postplanning). So here's hoping that you fellow Plebe parents will
take good notes and share pics (on the net) and if one or two of you could
keep an eye out for a 5'11" brown-haired, blue-eyed Plebe named Darren, we
would appreciate your telling him we love him. (And to make matters more
difficult, he does not get spring break this year as he has a crew meet in
Tennessee through the 11th!) :-(
GO NAVY!!!!

If all of those who are going to Herndon have a vcr in their hotel
room, you can find out the local channel televising the climb and tape it
yourself. My John's commissioning ceremony was obtained that way.
Thornton could not have done a better job. He was in it 6-7 times and it
was professionally done by the cameraman at no charge. If you think there
will not be a vcr in your room.......bring your own.
Sure wish I was going with you.

TO ALL...

READ THIS MESSAGE FROM YOUR MODERATOR.

OK, I'll explain this once again so that even the most intelligent of our
membership can understand it.

DO NOT SEND THE SAME MESSAGE TO BOTH USNA-NET AND USNA-PLEBE !!!

Do not COPY both USNA-Net AND USNA-Plebe !!!

If you want to send a response to an individual member of the net and also
want the net to receive a copy, just send the first and only message to the
net and address the first line of the body of the text with the member's
name. As in: "To Mike Zets and All," Everyone on the list will get the
message including Mike and no one will get more than one copy.

After just six hours today, I opened my mail box to find 32 messages and a
dozen were duplicates, sent to BOTH Net and Plebe. In one case member A
sent a message to Member B ("B" got one copy there) and then copied it to
USNA-Net ("B" got another copy there) and also copied it to USNA-Plebe ("B"
got the third copy there and 97 out of 110 of us got Two copies.)

THERE IS NO REASON FOR THIS.

Please try to understand our structure. We currently have 110 USNA-Net
members. That's everybody. Out of those 110 total members, 97 of them are
ALSO on USNA-Plebe. No one is on USNA-Plebe that is not also on USNA-Net.
So every time someone sends the same message to BOTH lists, 97 families get
two copies. Besides defeating the purpose of two separate lists, we're
driving up the message traffic on our server for no reason. The reason for
TWO lists is that a few families do not want to be bothered with the higher
message traffic that accompanies the Plebe stuff. When the current Plebe
Parents become Firstie Parents in three more years, most of you will
understand why a few may not want to hear about Herndon again this year.

I might add that over half of the membership on USNA-Plebe are not Plebe
Parents but just want to share experiences at all levels or love to hear
anything about the Yard. I don't blame them, so do Sandi and I.

I have been trying hard to encourage message traffic and open discussion of
just about anything USNA related. I want you all to post whatever your
little hearts desire.

Just don't double up.
Just don't double up.

Mike

Gray, granite obelisk; 21 feet high, matching gray, granite base, 71" x
71"; base of shaft, 48" x 48".

The Herndon Monument was commissioned by the Officers of the U.S. Navy
as a tribute to Commander William Lewis Herndon (1813-1857) after his
loss in the Pacific Mail Steamer "Central America" during a hurricane
off Georgia on September 12, 1857. Herndon had followed the long time
custom of the sea that a ship's captain is the last person to depart his
ship in peril. It was erected in its current location on June 16, 1860
and has never been moved even though the Academy was completely rebuilt
between 1899 and 1908.

Beginning in the late 1920s, the Herndon Monument became the center of
what is known today as Plebe Recognition Ceremony. (Perhaps because it
is the last rite of passage?) The ceremony evolved from the custom of
Plebes on departing graduation exercises in Dahlgren Hall of reversing
their uniform jackets and hats and snake dancing through the yard
singing the ditty "Ain't No More Rivers," meaning the official end of
fourth class year. Eventually the custom came to involve climbing
various monuments in the yard and placing their hats on top. The tallest
challenge was the Herndon Monument. As the ceremony evolved it became
the only challenge and the only monument used in the ritual.

The legend developed that the student who got his hat on the pinnacle of
the obelisk first would become the first Admiral of his class. Although
records have been kept in recent years, the legend has not proved true.
Beginning in the mid-1970s it became a tradition that the Midshipman who
first reached the top is carried by his classmates to the
Superintendent, who observes the ceremony from the Chapel steps, where
the triumphant Midshipman is given a pair of Admiral shoulder boards.

When graduation exercises were held in Dahlgren Hall, the ceremony was
among the last of the events of June Week (Commissioning Week). After
1966, when the graduation ceremonies were moved to the Navy-Marine Corps
Stadium, it among the first of the events.

Beginning in the 1950s, the upper classes decided to make the task more
difficult and started the custom of coating the granite shaft with
grease such as lard and cooking fat and digging a mud pit around its
base. The latter custom has been discontinued, but the greasing
continues. At some point, too, it became a custom to glue and/or tape a
Plebe's "dixie cup" hat to the top of the monument so that it had to be
removed before their standard visored hat could be put in its place.

The monument climb is timed and a salute cannon is fired to signal the
beginning of the ceremony and every fifteen minutes during the climb.
The record time of one minute, thirty seconds was set by the class of
1972 (that's us) in 1969. The longest climb was in 1995 when the Class
of 1998 took four hours, five minutes and seventeen seconds. BEAT
ARMY!!! See you at HERNDON !!

Hi:

I called it a "Mother Pin" because the Youngster class gets to design one
side of their rings that they receive officially at the Ring Dance. That
design is also made into a "Shield" (that's the word I couldn't think of
yesterday) pin that the mids often give their mothers (sometimes
girlfriends/fiancees). I asked for it just as a pin and then had
inconspicuous loops put on the back to wear on a chain.

The "Lucky Bag" is the "Year Book" for the Academy. I still have my
father's from 1919!

Best,

To All...

Please take a moment to check out the newest Parents' Club Web site brought
to you by the Parents' Club of Connecticut at www.napcct.org.

It has been written by Philip Trzcinski and George Minukas (and I suspect
with a little help from Philip's other son, Barney).

It was just published yesterday and I know that it will grow as they all
have to be a valuable and information rich site. Congratulations to NAPCCT
for the effort and a hearty WELCOME ABOARD!

For all of those who plan on attending Herndon -- and are traveling a
distance -- Sam's Club has collapsible chairs for under $10 -- they fit in a
duffel bag. My husband and I bought 2 and have taken them on the plane with
us. They actually are comfortable -- as long as you don't wiggle too much!

I know that my son is counting down the days! My daughter is one of the
cadets in charge of Recognition -- USAFA's counterpart to Herndon. The C4Cs
at the Air Force Academy will be recognized next Saturday -- 2 months before
our kids climb Herndon. It never ceases to amaze me about the differences
between Academies!

For those of you who are lucky enough to have your Mid home for Spring
Break, enjoy every minute of it!! We are pretty much snowed in here in
Cleveland - along with a good part of the upper Midwest and East!!

I spoke with my son last night. (Thank you, Greg and Carrie for taking him
in for the night!) He left for Mexico this morning. During our
conversation he said something that I thought I would like to pass along.

He has done very well, academically, since at the Academy. Each semester he
has improved. Here is the basic content of the conversation:

When Michael was younger we lived in a community where there was a very
prestigious prep school. His father had indicated that we might send him
there, when he was old enough. We moved out of state before this could
happen (and we would never have sent him away to school at that age).
Michael felt that if he had gone to this prep school, he would, most likely,
have ended up in some Ivy League school. (I believe that this might very
well have happened.) His comment was "If I had gone to another college, I
probably would be doing just as well, academically, but I would NEVER have
learned as much as I have here." He truly values the scope of his
education - as well as the difficulty of the classes he has encountered.

He understands and appreciates the fact that every challenge he has
experienced at the Academy has made him stronger - physically, mentally, and
emotionally. I would imagine that many of your Mids feel the same way that
he does. Michael is generally very "tight-lipped", it is like pulling teeth
to get him to engage in something that might be considered a conversation.
So when he opened up about this last night, I just knew that I should pass
it along.

Enjoy!! I certainly hope that the weather co-operates!! Oh, yes, and one
more thing. Plebe parents. Don't be surprised if you have difficulty
finding the floor in your Mid's room. It may just disappear while he or she
is home!!

To All,

Well, I hope that everything's going all right with everyone as our Mids
start Spring Break. What a relief they must feel being able to get away
from the Yard and the books for a few days.

I hope that you parents don't mind not being able to find the floor of your
Mid's room for a few days. Just wait until they return to the Yard to send
in the bulldozer to clean up. The sheer joy of not being under absolute
control for a few days usually causes them to forget everything that the
Yard has beaten into them about housekeeping. Patience.

If you're in the mood and have a moment to spare, please take a look at the
completely updated and revamped Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's) page on
our website, www.navy-usna.org. I spent the day putting things down for all
of the new members and also for the ol' timers out there.

Hopefully, I've gotten it right this time. When the site was first up, I
threw the FAQ's together in order to have something there. After a few
weeks of operation, I think I managed to finally put up answers to some of
the more frequent (and puzzling) questions that have crossed my keyboard,
like...
    Member Privacy?
    Why Two Lists?
    How do I do... ?
    Can I... ?
    Why can't I... ?
Where do I contact a Parents' Club near me?
What's the phone number for the Yard?

Plus a large list of links to Other USNA Related Sites.

If you read the FAQ's before you got this message, IT'S ALL CHANGED!

Thanks for taking the time to re-read them.

Greetings,

I thought it was about time to introduce ourselves as we have
been on the USNA-Net reading on all of the E-mail for
several months and enjoying the conversations. It is also
comforting to know we all share many of the same concerns.

We are Bill and Donna Schottel of Belleville, IL.. Our son is
Brian Schottel, Class of '01. We live just across the Mississippi
River from St. Louis in Southern Illinois. We are members of the
St. Louis Chapter of the Naval Academy Parent's Club.

We are fortunate Mid parents indeed to have our son home for his
first full Spring Break since he enlisted in the NAVY in 1996. Brian
came to the Naval Academy by way of the Naval Academy
Preparatory School (NAPS) in Newport, Rhode Island.

His two previous Spring Breaks He was on the Baseball team at
NAPS and then at the Academy and had commitments to that.
We were fortunate enough last Spring Break though to watch him
play baseball in Memphis at the All Service Academies Tournament.

I would like to share my Herndon experience last year. If you are a
Plebe parent and wondering if you should go. I will tell you
Go!!!!!!!!!!!
You won't ever regret it. The look in your Mid's eyes after they have
completed the climb is well worth the price to get there. It was
without a doubt one of the proudest moments in all of our lives.
Wow what an experience to watch one of them pull the Dixie Cup off
and replace it with the Midshipman's cover. I will never forget it.

Good Luck to all of the parents and their MIDs. Enjoy Spring Break with
your Mid. They deserve it. Plebe parents the wait is just about over,
Herndon is almost here!

Greetings,

Does anyone out there know when the end of
Semester Leave is scheduled?
I have looked at the Naval Academy Web Site
calendars, but they don't pin the exact dates down.

My Mid couldn't take leave last year because of
a sports commitment, but he informed
me there is a Leave period.

Sorry folks,

I was not clear in my previous message about
end of Semester leave. Thanks to all who responded
and tried to help me out.

I'll try and make my question clearer. I was referring
to a so called leave period that my Mid said is 4 to 5
days long. The leave period commences sometime after
the end of the Spring Semester Exams and ends
before the Mids are required to return to the Yard for
Commissioning Week duties.

He spoke of this leave period last year to me when
he was a Plebe. Several of his buddies went on leave
during this period and then returned for duty before
Commissioning Week. He could not leave as he had
a sports Commitment.

He has brought the subject up during his Spring Break.
He also said a lot of the Mids hung around the Yard last
year and didn't take it. Maybe he is confused and its a
long weekend or a special privilege.

Sure like to know if anybody out there has heard about
this or knows the answer.

Thanks,

Bill Schottel

Hi,

Your son is correct according to our son who is a plebe and told us during
the ride home for spring break that he will have leave during that period of
time. I am not certain on the number of days, but 5-7 days I believe
depending on when the finals are over for each Mid. Steven will be home later
this evening and I will post further details if he knows more.

WE ARE NEVER ALONE!!!
This is a true story that occurred in 1994 and is told by Lloyd Glen:

Throughout our lives we are blessed with spiritual experiences,
some of which are very sacred and confidential, and others, although
sacred, are meant to
 be shared.

Last summer my family had a spiritual experience that had a lasting
and profound impact on us, one we feel must be shared. It's a message
of love.
It's a message of regaining perspective, and restoring
proper balance and renewing priorities. In humility, I pray that I
might, in relating this story, give you a gift my little son, Brian,
gave our family one summer day last year.

On July 22nd I was enroute to Washington DC for a business trip.
It was all so very ordinary, until we landed in Denver for a plane
change. As I collected my belongings from the overhead bin, an
announcement was made for Mr. Lloyd Glenn to see the United Customer
Service Representative immediately.

I thought nothing of it until I reached the door to leave the plane and
I heard a gentleman asking every male if they were Mr. Glenn. At this
point I knew something was wrong and my heart sunk. When I got off the
plane a solemn-faced young man came toward me and said, "Mr. Glenn,
there is an emergency at your home. I do not know what the emergency is
or who is involved, but I will take you to the phone so you can call the
hospital." My heart was now pounding, but the will to be calm took over.
Woodenly, I followed this stranger to the distant telephone where I
called the number he gave me for the Mission Hospital. My call was put
through to the trauma center where I learned that my three-year-old son
had been trapped underneath the automatic garage door for several
minutes, and that when my wife had found him he was dead. CPR had been
performed by a neighbor, who is a doctor, and the paramedics had
continued the treatment as Brian was transported to the hospital. By the
time of my call, Brian was revived and they believed he would live, but
they did not know how much damage had been done to his brain, nor to his
heart. They explained that the door had completely closed on his little
sternum right over his heart. He had been severely crushed. After
speaking with the medical staff, my wife sounded worried but not
hysterical, and I took comfort in her calmness. The return flight
seemed to last forever, but finally I arrived at the hospital six hours
after the garage door had come down. When I walked into the intensive
care unit, nothing could have prepared me to see little son laying so
still on a great big bed with tubes and monitors everywhere. He was on
a respirator. I glanced at my wife who stood and tried to give me a
reassuring smile.
It all seemed like a terrible dream. I was filled-in with the details
and given a guarded prognosis. Brian was going to live, and the
preliminary tests indicated that his heart was ok, two miracles in and
of themselves. But only time would tell if his brain received any
damage. Throughout the seemingly endless hours, my wife was calm. She
felt that Brian would eventually be all right. I hung on to her words
and faith like a lifeline. All that night and the next day Brian
remained unconscious. It seemed like forever since I had left for my
business trip the day before.
Finally at two o'clock that afternoon, our son regained consciousness
and sat up uttering the most beautiful words I have ever heard spoken.
He said, "Daddy hold me" and he reached for me with his little arms.
 [TEA BREAK...smile]
By the next day he was pronounced as having no neurological or
physical deficits, and the story of his miraculous survival spread
throughout the hospital. You cannot imagine our gratitude and joy. As
we took Brian home we felt a unique reverence for the life and love of
our Heavenly Father that comes to those who brush death so closely.
In the days that followed there was a special spirit about our home.
Our two older children were much closer to their little brother. My
wife and I were much closer to each other, and all of us were very close
as a whole family. Life took on a less stressful pace. Perspective
seemed to be more focused, and balance much easier to gain and
maintain. We felt deeply blessed. Our gratitude was truly profound.
The story is not over (smile)! Almost a month later to the day of the
accident, Brian awoke from his afternoon nap and said, "Sit down mommy.
I have something to tell you." At this time in his life, Brian usually
spoke in small phrases, so to say a large sentence surprised my wife.
She sat down with him on his bed and he began his sacred and remarkable
story. "Do you remember when I got stuck under the garage door? Well it
was so heavy and it hurt really bad. I called to you, but you couldn't
hear me. I started to cry, but then it hurt too bad. And then the
'birdies' came." "The birdies?" my wife asked puzzled. "Yes," he
replied. "The birdies made a whooshing sound and flew into the garage.
They took care of me."
"They did?"
"Yes" he said. "One of the birdies came and got you. She came to tell
you I got stuck under the door."

A sweet reverent feeling filled the room. The spirit was so strong and
yet lighter than air. My wife realized that a three-year-old had no
concept of death and spirits, so he was referring to the beings who came
to him from beyond as "birdies" because they were up in the air like
birds that fly.
"What did the birdies look like?" she asked. Brian answered, "They
were so beautiful. They were dressed in white, all white. Some of them
had green and white. But some of them had on just white." "Did they
say anything?" "Yes" he answered. "They told me the baby would be
alright." "The baby?" my wife asked confused. Brian answered. "The
baby laying on the garage floor." He went on, "You came out and opened
the garage door and ran to the baby. You told the baby to stay and not
leave." My wife nearly collapsed upon hearing this, for she had indeed
gone and knelt beside Brian's body and seeing his crushed chest and
recognizable features, knowing he was already dead, she looked up around
her and whispered, "Don't leave us Brian, please stay if you can. As she
listened to Brian telling her the words she had spoken, she realized
that the spirit had left his body and was looking down from above on
this little lifeless form. "Then what happened?" she asked. "We went on
a trip." He said, "far, far away." He grew agitated trying to say the
things he didn't seem to have the words for. My wife tried to calm and
comfort him, and let him know it would be okay. He struggled with
wanting to tell something that obviously was very important to him, but
finding the words was difficult. "We flew so fast up in the air.
They're so pretty Mommy." he added. "And there is lots and lots of
birdies." My wife was stunned. Into her mind the sweet comforting
spirit enveloped her more soundly, but with an urgency she had never
before known. Brian went on to tell her that the "birdies" had told him
that he had to come back and tell everyone about the "birdies". He
said they brought him back to the house and that a big fire truck, and
an ambulance were there. A man was bringing the baby out on a white bed
and he tried to tell the man that the baby would be okay, but the man
couldn't hear him. He said the birdies told him he had to go with the
ambulance, but they would be near him. He said, they were so pretty and
so peaceful, and he didn't want to come back. Then the bright light
came. He said that the light was so bright and so warm, and he loved
the bright light so much. Someone was in the bright light and put their
arms around him, and told him, "I love you but you have to go back. You
have to play baseball, and tell everyone about the birdies." Then the
person in the bright light kissed him and waved bye-bye. Then woosh,
the big sound came and they went into the clouds. The story went on for
an hour. He taught us that "birdies" were always with us, but we don't
see them because we look with our eyes and we don't hear them because
we listen with our ears. But they are always there, you can only see
them in here (he put his hand over his heart). They whisper the things
to
help us to do what is right because they love us so much. Brian
continued, stating, "I have a plan, Mommy. You have a plan. Daddy has
a plan. Everyone has a plan. We must all live our plan and keep our
promises. The birdies help us to do that cause they love us so much."
In the weeks that followed, he often came to us and told all, or part
of it again and again. Always the story remained the same. The details
were never changed or out of order. A few times he added further bits
of information and clarified the message he had already delivered. It
never ceased to amaze us how he could tell such detail and speak beyond
his ability when he spoke of his "birdies".

Everywhere he went, he told strangers about the "birdies".
Surprisingly, no one ever looked at him strangely when he did this.
Rather, they always got a softened look on their face and smiled.

Needless to say, we have not been the same ever since that day, and I
pray we never will be.

To all...

I just thought a gentle reminder was in order about what message topics are
appropriate for posting to our Listservers.

We are in the business of USNA Parenting, If it doesn't have something to
do with USNA, then it should not be sent to the net. Messages about
charitable causes Internet viruses, jokes, politics, religion, etc. are
always inappropriate.

We must remember that we are a diverse group of individuals who may not
always share your beliefs and value system. What is touching and
heart-warming to you may actually be offensive to other members.

If you haven't read our rules, take a minute and re-read them. They can be
found at www.navy-usna.org along with Frequently Asked Questions about this
and many other matters.

If you haven't been to the site within the past few days, it's been
completely revamped and now includes many new links, schedules, phone
numbers and other valuable reference material for USNA Parents. Check it
out.

On the subject of restaurants, there are many of varied menus and prices.
To appreciate the mids dining experience in Annapolis, I'd like to suggest
Buddy's, located a few blocks from the Yard. It's neither fancy nor
especially expensive, but it is definitely a must. My husband enjoyed the
all-you-can-eat buffet; whereas, I found the crab cakes more to my taste.
Although a bit heavy on filling and presenting an occasional shell bit, they
were pretty good.

Don't expect the greatest food or the speediest service. Do expect to find
our mids sitting shoulder-to-shoulder chowing down on thick, juicy
hamburgers and engaged in animated, unguarded conversation. Being able to
peek into their world for a few minutes is worth the price of slightly
watery soda and limp fries.

We have eaten in every restaurant in Annapolis - some are not worth your
time and some are wonderful. Our favorites:

1. Chart House - just over the foot bridge from the Waterfront Marriot -
it is right on the water. Reservations needed - it is elegant with a
terrifc sald bar that is the best I've seen. A must to eat at some time
during the 4 years. We save this for special times - PLebe Parents
Weekend, Herndon, Easter etc.
2. Carrol's Creek and Lewnes Steak House are over there as well and are
really good.
3. Pusser's Landing at the waterfront Marriot is great to go do on a
sunny afternoon and eat outside on their dock - you can watch all the
boats go by within several feet and watch the waiters help some to tie
up to the restaurant slips. Food is good as well.
4. Two brand new restaurants just opened - Castlebay Restaurant and
Galway Bay - both Irish in decor and menu. Galway Bay is quite good -
expensive. Castlebay is more like a pub - smokey. In town.
5. O'Brien's and Griffins are also within walking distance and
worthwhile - upperclass mid hang-outs.
6. Ram's Head Tavern is a very nice place with a micro-brewery
atmosphere. Near Loew's Hotel
7.Reynold's Tavern - historic and small and Harry Browne's. Both very,
very expensive but glad we did them once.
8. Mangia's - good Italian place in town, inexpensive and good food, a
good place to go to when you take out your mids roommates.

Fun Places - Outback, Fuddruckers, Chilli's. Buddy's BUT only there for
Sunday Brunch otherwise the food is not worth the $. We also found
Armadillo's disappointing and Cafe Normandy is inconsistent.

Great Chinese food = The Canton Restaurant, located near Graul's (near
the Stadium). Unassuming atmosphere but food is great, inexpensive and
chefs are very accomodating. WE use them for take-out when we stay at
the Hampton Inn and then we eat in the very nice facilities at the
hotel.
I hope this gives you some info - check out the following website:

Maria's is a very good Italian rest. downtown behind the Market House.
Northwoods is an excellent upscale rest. just east of Graul's and the stadium.
If you have a car and want to try another upscale rest., Cafe Bretton in
Severna Park, just off the Ritchie Hwy. Our son's sponsor took us there for
several good dinners.
For those Japanese food aficionados, the rest. on the west side of Main St. is
very good. I just don't remember the name. It has a sushi bar that you can
see from the front window. It's north of Ben and Jerry's I think.
That's my addition to the good list that's being generated.

New to this listserve, we are Jim and Anne Paul of Anderson, Alaska, a
small town in the shadow of Mt. McKinley. We have been parents of mids for
several years and have a few more to go - our daughter, Morgen, was a
member of the class of '94. She is a SWO - a happy one, at that - who has
deployed twice to the Arabian Gulf - once on the Nimitz and once as the FCO
on the Port Royal. She is presently on her first shore assignment in
Mayport, FL . Our older son, Jan, will graduate this May. He has chosen to
be an NFO (his vision is not perfect) and will start flight school in
Pensacola in July - after spending his leave here in Alaska assembling a
kit car! Our youngest - son Scott - is a plebe. Maybe because he has
always been used to taking orders from his parents and siblings - or
because he had more knowledge about what to expect - he's been the least
stressed by the plebe "experience". Our fledgling parents' club here in
AK is mostly an information source, with our coordinator keeping us up to
date on e-mail (from Fiji, no less, in the winter). It is very difficult
and expensive for us to gather face to face. Our kids are all in FL for
spring break. Jan and some buddies rented a motorhome in Ft. Lauderdale
and drove down to Key West, where at last report, all were having a
marvelous time. Scott and another plebe buddy went to Jacksonville to
borrow a vehicle from Morgen to visit the beaches and Disney World. It's
good that they all chose to go to a warm place that was really warm this
week - the D.C. area (and most probably Annapolis) looks pretty bleak on
the TV news!!!!

To add some notes to the discussion about eateries in Annapolis. We liked
Griffins - especially a lunch of their clam chowder on a chilly day.
Another fun place to go - but it's a short drive out - is Hayman's Crab
House. They have great seafood dinners, but their specialty is
brown-paper-on-the-table crabs - wear a bib!! Great meals also at Ram's
Head Tavern - and don't forget the Officer's and Faculty Club on the Yard.
When your mid doesn't have much time - or can't leave the yard - Dahlgen is
great - we've spent many fun hours - and met lots of great people there.
When Jan was a plebe, someone told him that "straight out of Gate 3 - past
the circles" there was a place called "Chicken Louie's" that had great milk
shakes. When we visited him for Plebe Parents' Weekend, we discovered
"Chick and Ruth's Deli" - an interesting hole in the wall - I can't even
remember what the food was like - we have laughed since about "Chicken
Louie's".

Hello Carol,

The only thing I have read about the anthrax vaccine which will be given to
those in the military who might be exposed to anthrax itself is that there
will be a certain percentage of those vaccinated who will come down with
the disease. Further, that percentage is generally expected to be higher
than most vaccines we in the free world are used to, but still a very low
number.

You didn't ask for our philosophy on the subject, but thought I might share
some with you anyway. Recognizing the risks, with people like Saddam and
the various terrorist organizations out there, I would prefer my kids in
the military to have the best opportunity to survive a "germ" warfare
attack if one of the potential "harms" they might encounter if placed in
harms way might be exposure to anthrax.

For those who contract the disease as a result of being vaccinated, a
consolation, certainly, is that they probably won't be on the battlefield
and will have the best medical care available to help them fight it. I feel
quite sure there are going to be two developments---first, there will be
some GI's who do, in fact, die from the vaccination---second, there will be
continual improvement of the vaccine and the process under which it is
administered, reducing the above percentage steadily.

I liken the whole issue to our having jet fighter pilots climbing into a
vehicle which is loaded with tons of highly flammable liquid fuel,
explosive rockets and bombs, flies at from just under the speed of sound to
a few times over that, and must be lit it on fire prior to take-off (often
off carrier decks)! While the military works very hard to make flying
fighters as safe as possible, it is fundamentally an unsafe practice (as is
vaccinating for anthrax)! However, it is also the best defense that we have
for certain situations and only a very small percentage of our pilots don't
make it back, even under hostile circumstances.

I think it does a disservice to promote the idea that a current vaccine
would actually cause the disease. The anthrax vaccine is a live, but
attenuated virus, meaning that although it will invoke immunity to the
disease it is not capable of causing the disease. For those interested,
please see http://www.defenselink.mil/other_info/vaccine.html.

I'd just like to offer another opinion on the anthrax vaccine that all
members of the military have been ordered to receive.

My husband, Kevin, is a Naval Intelligence Officer and although the anthrax
vaccine has not been administered in his command yet, he says that he will
ABSOLUTELY take it when the opportunity comes. In fact, he said that he
wished he could have everyone in our family vaccinated. If you knew Kevin,
you would realize that he is in no way an alarmist or an extremist. (In
fact, he believes that he lights WON'T go out on January 1, 2000.) Yet he
thinks that there is a real need for members of the military to have the
anthrax vaccine. Exposure to anthrax can mean death in three days. Seems
like an easy choice to me.

To Sue,Ken and All:

Last fall, I stayed at the Four Points Sheraton in Cherry Hill, NJ,
partly because my parents were staying with relatives there. It was very
nice, and with my Entertainment Book the price was much more reasonable
than the hotels in Philadelphia. The 20 minute drive to the city was no
problem. I had no trouble getting into town Friday afternoon, or getting
to the stadium on Saturday morning.

Many clubs/individuals book rooms about 1 yr. in advance; especially if you
want to be situated in downtown Phila.. If you're looking to secure a block of
rooms, you may also want to consider either renting a separate function room
that can be used as a hospitality suite --or-- rent a suite with adjoining
sitting area for the same purpose. This is good for socializing with parents
and mids.

Might we also suggest that you use the internet to search for convenient
hotels.
www.yahoo.com is a good search engine to try and then you can make
specifications as to the proximity to the city, airports, or stadium that you
prefer. Yahoo also serves well for locating restaurants and their distance
from your selected hotel.

In the past, the Phillie hotels require a minimum of 2 nights stay. You
can call the Navy sports offc. now and they will tell you what hotel the
football team will be staying at. Last year. it was the Wyndham - a
great place with the subway located right outside to take you to the
stadium. Members of our Club who stayed there were pleased with the 10
min. train trip and saved the cost of parking and the harried traffic.
The team stayed at the Doubletree previous to that - we stayed there and
were right downtown in the best location!
Although I usually make my reservation a year ahead, the travel agency
in Bancroft Hall issues a listing of the Navy-Army hotels/motels with
the best rates! When I realized that, I was able to make better
reservations a month before, at $99. with breakfast included. I suggest
that you ask your mid to get that info for you from the Bancroft
Hall-based travel agency.
The Hampton Inn out by the airport/stadium has a nice atrium for
gathering and reasonable suites for partying.
Hope this helps!

Hello,
We are Penny and Bob Hulbert. We live in White Plains, New York. Our only
child, Eric, is in the class of 2002. Eric is in the 16th company and is on
the sailing team on the j24.  We were so happy to learn of the listserver ;
getting information and generally communicating with our plebe has been tough.
We look forward to sharing experiences with other mid parents and receiving
any advice they can offer.
  Yours truly

To all,

For some reason (unknown to me - I'll find out soon) the following message
was sent properly but bounced. It shouldn't have. Let's just pretend that
it didn't. Debbie and Carl, you did nothing wrong. I guess we've got
gremlins at work in Austin at the Host Server.

Please reply to them directly at: daacaa@tempest.nac.net. Their message
was:

Thought it was time to be brave enough to leave a message.
We are Carl and Debbi Anderson of New Jersey. We live in the northwest
part of the state ( farm country), believe it or not New Jersey has some
rural parts. Our oldest son Bjorn is a plebe in 21st company. His love
is long distant running and has managed to stay on the X-country and
track team without being cut. We have 2 other children. Sten is a
senior, whose interests are tennis and awaiting college acceptances. Kiira
is an 8th Grader who also loves running and gymnastics.
Carl is a beginner to the computer, and has managed to handle email ,
due to his desire to talk to Bjorn. I'm not much better at it but I'm
learning.

I have enjoyed the conversations over the last few weeks. A lot of
similarities. I also appreciate the advice form the upper class parents,
keep it coming , we need all the help we can get. Bjorn has settled in,
too. I noticed that he considers the academy home much more, this time
he was home. It's a mixed emotion for a first child to leave home.
Well I went on enough. We will be at Herndon, Grandmas in tow.
Talk to you soon. GO NAVY! BEAT ARMY!

I had a question earlier from Dev & Laki Mahadevan <dmahad@hal-pc.org>
from Houston, TX about whether or not they could still claim their Mid as a
tax deduction...

THIS IS NOT OFFICIAL but I have always understood it to be...

You should consider your Mid to be a college student. Any money they make
at the Yard (and perhaps from a job before they went to Annapolis) is
considered Income and they will have to file an income tax return JUST LIKE
ANY OTHER COLLEGE STUDENT.

Now, here's the fun part. Does the parent or the Mid get the deduction?
Here's what I have done for years. Ask your Mid to figure out his own taxes
BOTH WAYS - both taking and not taking himself as a deduction. The
difference is what you owe him if you take the deduction and he doesn't.
The IRS will allow one of you to take the deduction BUT NOT BOTH!

When you figure out your taxes BOTH WAYS, you'll probably find that YOU get
a bigger tax savings than he does. If that's the case, I always took the
deduction and sent a check to my "college" student in the amount of the
"hit" he had to take to make up for it. The Mids gets a little bonus and
Uncle Sam gets the least from the family.

Again, this is not official but if there are any Accountants out there to
back me up, now's the time to offer a little free tax advise. I know that
you're busy this time of year but ask the spouse to send the email for you
if you can't spare the time. :>)

Thanks and I hope this helps.
(For those parents who have daughters as Mids, please substitute Her or She
in the above. I wouldn't want to be politically incorrect.)

I like to recommend : Shelly's Flower Box on King George St.,
800-736-0876 or 410-267-0876. They are considerate and their packages
are really good - they take VISA etc. over the phone - also

Lennon's Fudge on Main St.. 410-263-3032 - This is
a favorite of Parents' Clubs when they order 'en masse' for a holiday.
They also take VISA etc. Great cookies and fudge!

Subject: usna-net: taxes and mid dependency

One of the most confusing situations that parents of midshipmen
encounter is how to file their federal taxes for their mid's first year
at the Naval Academy as well as the years that follow.

In order to be certain on this issue, my husband and I located the
official form that was given to us by the Academy when our son was a
plebe. It listed the gov.'s exact monetary support to our son from I-Day
until Dec of that year. Cash, food allowance, lodging, medical and
dental care expenses were all listed.

There was another section with itemized areas where we could list our
support. As suggested on this form, our support at this time period did
exceed the total support provided by the Academy, (the other dependency
tests were met as specified by the IRS) and we were able to claim our
mid as a dependent, especially in using the initial money deposit that
was required for entering plebes.

BUT the advice in this official form then stated that "although these
same general calculations can be used for mid's other years at the Naval
Academy, midshipmen pay and Academy support will be greater over the
full years and that parents' support is unlikely to exceed "support by
others" ".

They suggested for further information or assistance, please call the
officer in charge at the Midshipmen Financial Advisor Ofice,
410-293-3307.

I trust that this is helpful to those who are wondering what to do.

Go Navy!

Fellow USNA-NET Members,

After Cathy Cully sent her note, I found this FAQ on the West Point Net and
it should shed additional light on the subject. It appears that claiming
your Mid as a dependent is OK for the tax year that your Mid entered the
Yard as a Plebe. After that, it's doubtful that you could ever hope to
claim your Mid again. Just another way of saying "Goodbye" as they leave
the nest. They can't be you little babies if you can't deduct them on your
1040.

The enclosed West-Point memorandum regarding income tax guidance for fourth
class cadets is the current version of a message distributed to the WP
plebes. In principle it should also apply to USNA Midshipmen.

I have included the entire message for distribution to our Net. While it was
written a year ago (the amounts may not be QUITE right today) the basic
message is still VERY relevant.

========QUOTE================

MEMORANDUM FOR FOURTH CLASS CADETS
SUBJECT: Income Tax Information
1. Many of you as fourth class cadets have questions concerning the income
tax consequences of cadet pay and allowances. This memo provides
information from the standpoint of both your tax return and your parents'
return for 1997. It is very important that you share this data with your
parents.

2. This memo is based on the tax laws and current rulings of treasury
officials. It is, however, informative only and does not necessarily
reflect the official position of the Internal Revenue Service or the
Department of the Army.

3. All cadets at the Academy must file their own income tax returns. Each
fourth class cadet who entered the Academy on 30 Jun 97 and remained through
31 Dec 97 has received or had credited to their account during 1997 base pay
of $3,366.84. Cadets must report this amount as income from the Army. In
addition, each cadet received a $4,600.00 pay advance to assist with the
payments of uniforms, textbooks, computer, software and various school fees.

4. Your parent(s)/guardian(s) must have contributed more than half of your
support for the year in order to claim you as an income tax exemption.
"More than half the support" refers to dollar value, and not to the length
of time support was furnished. Your parent or guardian may properly include
the cost of board, clothing, lodging, medical and dental care, education,
property and furniture, insurance, etc., they furnished you when they
calculate their level of support. If you lived at home during the first six
months of 1997, your parent or guardian may include a proportionate amount
of the family food bill, utilities, rent or house payments, interest, taxes,
etc., as part of your support. If you attended college, prep school, or
high school prior to entering the Military Academy, your parents may also
include the amount they paid for tuition, books, school supplies, and
transportation to and from
school as parental support.

5. In determining the value of support furnished from sources other than
your parents, you must include both taxed and untaxed support amounts. This
simply means that the portion of your taxable pay spent on your own support
must be included, and in addition, the support provided by the Army in the
form of food, lodging, education and their services must also be included.
Even though the value of Army support is not taxed as income, the value must
be considered when determining who provided more than half of your support.
The following chart indicates values of support furnished by yourself and by
the Army.

MALO-T(1)SUBJECT: Income Tax Information

Cadet Pay earned from 1 July through 31 December $3,366.84
Government Pay Advance
4,600.00
Subsistence (food)
  (95 days x $5.03 per day) 30 June through 30 September 477.85
  (91 days x $5.15 per day) 1 October through 31 December 468.65
Room and Board (186 days at $15.33 [estimated])
2,851.38
Education (the actual 1993 tuition cost per semester
  at the U.S. Military Academy)
12,354.00*
TOTAL SUPPORT BY THE CADET AND BY THE ARM $24,118.72
*  1997 Estimate

6. In our opinion, if your parent has not provided at least $24,118.72 in
support, then your parent may not be able to claim you as an exemption. If
your parent has provided more that this amount in support, then your parent
is entitled to claim you as an exemption. Under IRS regulations, if your
parent can claim you, you cannot claim a personal exemption for yourself,
and you will have to complete a worksheet to compute your standard
deduction.

7. The question may arise whether an appointment to the Military Academy
can be considered a "scholarship award" within the meaning of the income tax
laws. The Internal Revenue Service has ruled that such an appointment is not
a scholarship award and that the education provided by the Military Academy
must, therefore, be included as an item of support furnished by the Army.

8. I trust that the information provided, although necessarily general in
nature, will be of assistance to you and your family. The above information
is provided to ensure that you and your parent(s)/guardian(s) have
sufficient data to calculate income tax returns.

9. Any questions by your parent(s)/guardian(s) concerning the proper
methods of calculating dependency should be resolved through independent
legal counsel, Publication 17, and/or contact with the Internal Revenue
Service.

Hello fellow USNA parents!

My husband Dewey and I (Juanita) Chauvin are proud parents of plebe Andrew
Chauvin. We are adjusting to life with a midshipman, and cherish those phone
calls. Andrew is doing well and is a member of the Men's Varsity Swim Team.
We live in Simi Valley, California, belong to the Annapolis Parents Club of S.
Calif. Thanks for the helpful info. on usna-net.

Hi, everyone,
The following Midshipman's (he is from Calif) request was forwarded to =
me by a member of Annapolis Parents' Club of Southern Calif. She =
requested I place this on our WebPages. I thought that might be risky =
for the Mids, looking to stay with strangers. (I'm not paranoid, but =
many other people can "look at" our website.) Whereas our USNA Net list =
of Parents are a group of names that have been verified (they are =
members of a Parents Club, or family or Mids at the Academy, or Alumni) =
by our list moderator.=20

My husband, Tom and I would love to host these Mids, but we are not on =
the route. The nearest city to us in Murrieta would be Victorville, =
which is 1 1/2 hours drive (by car). I do know of a two families, one in =
Apple Valley and one in Joshua Tree, that might be willing to help.=20

Thanks,=20
Janet Ferrara, Murrieta, Calif.

The request from the Mid follows:

This summer, I am going to lead a group of Midshipman across the
country by bicycle. We need some help, please.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------=
-----
-
The trip will begin on 27MAY99 and end in California on 20JUN99.
There are approximately 7 of us riding. If your town is on our list and
you would be OK with us staying 1 night, please contact me with your
name, address, email address (if you have one), and phone number.

The following is a reply I sent to the mom who needed to get a care package to
her mid...
Thought perhaps there are others who might like to use this wonderful cookie
service...they deliver this Sat, March 27th and then again on May 1.

The United Methodist Church, Attn: Beverly Henry, 301 Rowe Blvd., Annapolis,
MD. 21401. Chocolate chip cookies are only $2.00 per dozen. They would
need the following information, along with your check for the amount of
cookies ordered:
Mids Name & Company#:
Sender's Name:
Sender's Address:
Sender's Phone Number:
Message you would like included on the card:
Cookies are baked at the church and delivered fresh to the mids on the
following remaining dates: March 27 & May 1.

When I asked if I could pass this
