So if you can't find what you're looking for at the Mid Store (this should be your first preference), then use our link. Prices are about the same (within cents of each other) so it's only a matter of availability. AMAZON.COM will find a title that the Mid Store may not have in stock or is Out-Of-Print whereas the Mid Store deals only in the more popular titles and can only get books still in print. Hope I helped in your search for reading material. One particular book that is a "must have" for new (and aspiring) Plebes and their parents is "The Naval Academy Candidate Handbook : How to Prepare, How to Get In, How to Survive" -- William Smallwood. You'll be glad you got this one. Our mid has just recently become the proud owner of a new cell phone. I know many of the mids have been carrying them for some time. I'm a little nervous he may be getting into more expense than he has bargained for. He assures me it's a digital (Sprint) and the majority of his calls will be "local", even though out of the Annapolis area, as long as he stays within his alloted minutes, he'll only be charged the initial monthly plan charge....which I believe is $40...I'm a little skepital. Those of you who's mids have been using them for awhile, have their experieinces been good ones? He has just activated his phone within the past few days and right now we're still experiencing some "technical difficulties" ... for whatever reason, we're unable to call him from Nashville...but he is receiving local calls just fine. He'll be making some calls today & hopes to have that corrected asap. We're looking forward to being able to call him for a change...and voicemail will be a special treat....but don't want to see him get into debt over this new convenience either. Your Mid should leave his phone turned OFF most of the time. This will force inbound calls to VoiceMail which he can retrieve using a regular landline phone. This will allow long incoming messages that won't be charged against air time. If possible, your Mid should use the lowest cost means for placing long distance calls. If he doesn't get free or reduced rate long distance, perhaps he could use a low rate calling card. Or even call collect. If the phone has Caller ID, use it to identify and send less important incoming calls to VoiceMail and retrieve them using a landline. Only answer those calls that you really want to spend the money for. I'm not sure of the Yard's position on actually having one of these phones. One thing... It better not ring during a class or at other times that your Mid is supposed to be doing something else. Yet another reason to leave it TURNED OFF all the time. Lastly, guard it carefully. The mids do not turn on their phones until late in the evening, obviously to avoid any repercussions from interference from their responsibilities. Having a cell phone does make it easier for us to talk with him but he is very careful not to have calls interfere with his studies late at night and we have not given his cell phone number to our relatives - he uses it mainly for weekend use. EVERY mid that can have a cell phone gets one! We remember when he was a plebe and he was so impressed with the upperclass' ability to own one. They receive lots of advice from the upperclass on the best one and way to use them and it is now part of the 'tradition' of moving up in the Brigade - it is one way to know that they are getting closer to Commissioning. It probably depends on how your family handles the long distance charges now. These are all pretty responsible young people, so don't worry. I do know that it is great for us to be able to contact Mike directly, whether he's at the academy or at his sponsors' home. We can leave a voice-mail for him, so that if we need to talk he can return the call. There were very few places along our route in the lower 48 that did not have good service - our service in AK is good, too, though not all digital. We even found that between February and April, several places in southern Canada were added to the service as well. It was wonderful to be able to have a "home" phone where the kids could call us whenever they wanted - one rate, no roaming charge. MEMBERSHIP As of this evening, there are 175 Members of USNA-Net of which 158 members also belong to USNA-Plebe. These figures are up over one hundred from January 15th when we introduced the new web site format. Thanks to all of you for your continuing support and a special welcome to all of the new families that have just joined in the past few weeks and months. It's extremely encouraging to see the continued growth and interest in our USNA Family. We have taken out a display advertisement in the Herndon issue of the Trident to encourage additional subscriptions from all of those that will be on the Yard for Commissioning week. Be sure to check it out. We're still trying to spread the word about this service to all of the Parents out there. If you know of someone who hasn't subscribed, PLEASE tell them about us and nag them into subscribing. The more parents we have, the better the service will work for all of us. NEW WELCOME MESSAGE PAGE In an effort to assist new members with the first glimpse of USNA-Net, we've added a new page to the web site which is now going out to new members as of a few days ago instead of the rather lengthy Welcome Message which we had been sending out previously. You can find it at... http://www.navy-usna.org/welcome.html. It's not linked from the main website menu, so you'll have to go to the address above to view it. It's a MUST read for all new members. We might suggest that those of you who joined before the beginning of this year should also have a look since this type of message was not sent out in the earlier days of the Listserver. NEW IDEAS WANTED We're always looking for ideas for additional "content" on our web site. As you come across sites that are of interest to Navy Parents, pass them on to the group and we'll try to permanently add links to them on our site for later reference. If you have an idea for other material that you can't find on the Internet, let us know. It's a good possibility that your Webmaster can find the information and add it to the site. Almost anything goes. It's actually "your" site and we want to make it as full and useful as possible. SITE VISITS AND PUBLICITY Our counter has been clicking steadily ever since we put it on the site. We realize that a lot of you are looking regularly since we're getting about 50 or more visits a day. Not bad for an unofficial site with only word of mouth to maintain interest and attract visitors. We want to thank all of our members who have put a note in their club newsletter about USNA-Net. If you haven't seen a note in your club's newsletter yet, drop us a line and we'd be happy to provide a news release for your editor to include in the next publication. We even have a prepared "half page" blurb in both Word and WordPerfect format that we can email to your club to make life really easy on an otherwise overworked and underpaid editor. YOUR OPINION MATTERS The web site is constantly growing, as I'm sure most of you know. If you haven't been to it in a month or so, it might be worth your time to visit again. We're also looking for any input on what you think of the site, its content, its organization and ease of use. Since its modest beginnings, it has grown quite large and we're worried that it's becoming a bit too hard to find what you're looking for. Let us know what you think even if you don't have a suggested solution. We can't fix what we don't know is broken. ARCHIVES AND PASSWORDS In case you missed it, we've moved the Archive access link to the main menu for both lists. We also changed the Username and Password about a month ago. If you didn't write them down when they were announced they are... Username: admiral Password: shipmate (Both lowercase) Everyone uses the same name and password to keep things simple. You cannot change them individually so there is no chance of losing or forgetting "your" password. For those of you that are new, some of the older information and messages in the archives make reference to West-Point and WP.ORG which is our sponsor organization. As we've grown, we moved away from WP and have filtered the input to maintain an entirely NAVY atmosphere but the early references may be confusing for the newcomers. We've updated a lot of the information-only messages with Navy content on our web site but we have left the archives completely intact for reference purposes. OLD BUSINESS We're not sure why the server in Austin repeated the transmission of about a dozen old messages on Friday from April. It probably happened during an Archive update and our host offers his apologies for the confusion. This is the first time it has happened and we probably won't see it again. Just delete them. Again, we're sorry for the extra traffic. If any of you are unhappy with the way the server signs your postings or we have your name(s) wrong or you're listed but your spouse is not... Let us know. It's a simple fix. A NOTE OF WELL PLACED PRAISE The list has been operating VERY well for the past month or so. No more double postings of the same message to both lists, troublesome topics, etc. THANKS so much to each and every one of you for the help, cooperation and words of encouragement. HERNDON UPDATE The big event is just twelve days away. For those that can make it, we'll be gathering between 8:00 and 8:30 AM for an informal get-together. Somewhere near the Tecumseh Monument would probably be best but let's get it straight BEFORE we show up to avoid missing anyone. To make it easier to identify USNA-Net members, we've agreed to wear a small red, white and blue lapel ribbon. Don't forget your club name tags if you have them; sun-screen; water bottle (in the freezer the night before works well); and dress for the weather - usually VERY hot, sunny and humid. FINALLY... TO ALL THE MOMS OUT THERE Happy Mother's Day! Be proud of your Mid and your role in his/her successes at the Yard. They couldn't do it without the support and sacrifices of all of the Mothers in our family. In that vein, remember to take a look at our "Open Letter to Mom" at... http://www.navy-usna.org/letter.org. Keep the tissues handy. Usually the Corp is transported in military cargo planes; instead they flew in a C-9 (VMR 1 which is much nicer), landing at Patrick Air Force Base. They all were permitted liberty and given $15.00. Some went to the beach; one MID brought a crab up to the hotel's kitchen anticipating consumption later. Some boarded their bus and went to Ron Jon's Surf Shop. My son was greeted by myself and 3 of his local friends and brought home to Winter Park for the night. It was great to hear them all laughing and carrying on again. It was good, so good for him to get off the yard. Today they all gather at 0900 at the entrance gate and perform in the Disney parade at 1330. Friends and family will again join him for the day. Tomorrow they'll have liberty until 1700; well deserved after the endless hours spent throughout the year playing at many events for the Academy. D&B was a group of 96 members in August; now there are 1/2 that. Rich loves the D&B and will miss the graduating firsties. Two Westpoint graduates were standing beside us; one worked for Disney, the other was a local recruiter. We know this because we were clapping so much that he figured this had to be more than a spectator and he introduced himself to us. When we left he said "Go army beat Navy". We said "GO NAVY BEAT ARMY" and we all laughed. We cheered and took lots of pictures. The weather was miserable on and off ALL morning. Everyone was soaked in their uniforms. Just as the parade was to start the skies cleared. Some of their trousers were soaked to their skin; no one noticed. The crowd was too busy watching this awesome group. My son forgot his white trousers; they've worn their "blues" since December. Someone had an extra pair of "whites". We saw many mids at Disney afterwards; they were ALL cutting up and having a good time!! A firstie by the name of MACK was at Epcot and talked briefly to Eddie Murphy. They were to be back on their bus by 2000 headed for their oceanfront hotel. Today, we took Rich back to the hotel by 1100; they all had full liberty until 1430. The weather was perfect! About 16 Mids were on the beach playing volleyball and some were swimming. They had an action packed week end. The officer in charge was Lt. Fong. He said that everything so far went as planned "which is unusual". They boarded a bus by 1500 and headed back to Patrick Air Force Base for departure. The only other parent that was there was Perkin"s (2001) Dad. This is without a doubt a first class organization and all can be proud!!! See you at Herndon!! Hofstra advances to the second round and will host number two seed Johns Hopkins next Saturday. "We had a couple of early changes to take the lead and the shots were there, but Hofstra came up big," said Navy head coach Richie Meade. The Flying Dutchmen jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the first quarter and then put the game away with six unanswered goals in the second period. "We made some slight errors and they took advantage of it but we maintained our focus on defense," said Meade. "Our defense did not play that poorly, it was more of a case that Hofstra's greatest asset is its unselfishness." The Mids battled Hofstra to a draw in the second half as each team scored six goals. By phoning 410/293-1000 and selecting option *9,* callers can receive a recorded listing of scheduled events for each day. In the event of rain, those planning to attend an outdoor event can call 410/293-0032 to find out if that event has been canceled or postponed. This recorded message will be updated as soon as a decision has been made to cancel an event. Also, on Wednesday, May 26, this line will have information as to the location of the graduation and commissioning ceremony if it is a rainy day -- either Navy-Marine Corps Stadium if weather permits or Alumni Hall if the ceremony must be moved indoors. We ask that scheduling and cancellation questions be directed to the above phone numbers as other offices at the Naval Academy may not have the most current information. *** USNA-NET post by: STOKER Michael 00-10 ZETS Mike ~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~. by westpoint.west-point.org (8.9.1/8.9.1) id QAA23080 for usna-net-outgoing; Mon, 17 May 1999 16:40:05 -0500 (CDT) From: "Mike Zets" To: "" Subject: usna-net: Contacting computerless Mids Date: Mon, 17 May 1999 17:46:09 -0400 charset="iso-8859-1" X-MSMail-Priority: Normal X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V5.00.2014.211 To all: I got the following message bounced because of an address problem. Our experience over a total of six summers that were not plebe summers was that mail seemed to be a hit or miss proposition. The mail that is sent to your mid's PO box is held over the summer. If I remember correctly, a separate mailing address is provided that is tied to the name of the training block (for example, PROTRAMID IIB). When your mid is embarked in a ship, mail can be sent using the ship's FPO (fleet post office) address. Probably the most important thing to know over the summer is the name of the training block, as mentioned above, and the schedule by general activity (currently on a YP cruise, sailing cruise, etc). If you have at least that, in an emergency, you can call to the Bancroft Hall Officer of the Day or to the summer training coordinator's office. You can be connected to both of these numbers via the USNA operator. I hope this is helpful. When the phone rings and it's your mid, your first words are, "Where ARE you?" - and there are times when they are somewhere you'd never guess. A ship's schedule can change - there can be cancellations or changes with mids' assignments - making a phone call from a ship at sea, when possible, is not easy, at best. I rest assured that USNA is about as concerned about my kid's safety and well being as I am. It's a grand adventure and a taste of being in the fleet to be out there. I have a SWO daughter and a son-in-law OIC of a helicopter detachment on a cruiser. In the last couple of years, the ships that they've deployed on have rewired and they have gone from having email addresses in care of the ship, to having their own personal email addresses at nadn. That means that the computers in their quarters can directly hook up to the server (probably just at certain times of the day). I doubt that these services would be available for mids on such temporary summer assignments - but, with good contacts, they may be able to hook up to hotmail type accounts - I guess we'll all find out. I'm looking forward to meeting some of you in the next week. I have my pin - complete with red, white and blue ribbon - ready to wear. I take off from AK tonight!! See you on the yard! There is a usually a difference between the first summer at sea on the YPs and sailboats than the assignments for the new 2nd or 1st class. The latter are assigned to actual fleet duty while the 'new' youngster 3rd class will be in the hands of (responsibility) USNA with contact (through GPS). you also can track them on the website set up for those summer cruises. In case of emergency, USNA will handle reaching them. Just call the Academy. The mids come to port frequently, the cruises are shorter than any of the next summers to come and they have access to phones at that time; parents also meet them to take them out on the town. Some of them on my son's '96 YP & sailboat cruise had such a good time in port that they had a hard time remembering to call home! These summer cruises for the new 'youngsters' give them a lot of hands-on experience and really builds their confidence because they are in control of the vessels under the watchful eyes of a petty officer and and a jr.officer. I know we all want to continue the daily e-mail contact etc. but it can't always be. Before you know it - they are home. As each summer passes, they become restless at home with 'nothing to do' and friends who may admire where they go but have nothing in common 'experience- wise'. Many mids travel together around Europe or even climb mts. in Africa on their summer leave as some did last summer. It is a mature transition that whether we are ready or not, comes to pass - they become quite independent and spend less and less of their free time at home. Enjoy when they do. Still, I think I might have the answer to some of your concerns about contacting your mids when their computers are stored and when they are not at the Academy. There are a few central computers at the Academy which Mids can use when they are there, to receive and send email from their normal email accounts. When they are not at the Academy they can also access their email from any other computer which has an internet connection. I am not sure exactly what the procedure is (there are certain passwords to use because the connection is relatively secure), but my son did this last year from South Africa and again last week while he was in Florida for a few days. We were able to send email to his Academy email address and he picked it up in Florida on a friend's computer and replied via the Naval Academy server. I could probably get the information from my son for accessing Naval Academy email mailboxes from another server for any of you who want it, if you like. I remember that last year my son emailed someone at the Academy server to find out what he had to do to access his email from outside the Academy. It was very easy once he had the information, and quite legal. I regularly access my home email from work (200 miles away in another city) and my work email from home, and I have done so from various other computers round the country. The morning broke without a cloud in the sky. The forecast was for 78 degree temperatures and light winds. A far cry from the year before when the still air reached the mid 90's. Sandi and I arrived at the Yard at 0815 and found a spot to park on the street next to the Naval Museum and Book Store only a few hundred yards from the Herndon Monument. A lucky thing since the closer parking lots were already filling to capacity. We packed up our gear and headed to the agreed upon rendezvous. Sunscreen, cameras, film, soft sided ice chest with water and soft drinks. Everything we could think of packed into our Class of 2000 kit bag. We were set for a great day. Sandi had done it before but this was to be my first experience watching the right of passage for the Plebe class. There were hundreds of parents already setting up shop around the cordoned off grass surrounding the Monument. The upperclass had already coated the tall grey stone with hundreds of pounds of lard and written their taunting words of challenge on all four sides... "Too tall, Sir." "One Hour" with a horizontal line meant to mark the passage of time and the supposed progress of the Class of '02 up to that time. The ladders still laying on the grass at the foot of the Monument were caked with excess lard as the ground crews began roping off the areas that were to be kept seperate from the spectators. The red, white and blue ribbons that were to identify us as USNA-Net members were nowhere to be seen. Where was everybody that had promised to meet between 0800 and 0830? Ah, there's one. Then, another. Wyoming, Southern California, Texas, Maryland, Louisanna. All represented. The best name tags and most easily identifed were those in the shape of their state. The first time attendees were setting up chairs and blankets behind the ropes to claim their places in the front row. The veterans were casually finding a spot beneathe the trees in the rear where they would be safe from the crush of standing onlookers later in the day - away from the heat and smell of a thousand sweating plebes, covered with mud and lard being hosed down to make them more slippery and to keep them cool in the yet to come heat of their Big Day. 0915 found us in front of Bancroft watching a recognition ceremony for the past year's sports participants. Loud rock music blaired from unseen loudspeakers while hundreds of Midshipmen stood by listening to the praises being spoken for each of the teams for their victories over Army. Baseball, Lacrosse, they were all being lauded with their season's statistics and cheers of the onlookers. The music faded and as each team was formally introduced, team captains stepped forward to ring the ship's bell in the courtyard, once each time for each victory of the season. Tradition at the Yard runs deep. Honors and accollades are inspiring to witness. Back to the Monument and soon it was 1015. The croud was beginning to find its way to the parade grounds. A spectacle not to be missed is the formal Parade of the Brigade at 1100. We found a seat at the top of the bleachers in the shade of one of the surrounding trees. The day was beginning to heat up as promised and the breeze and shade gave us a chance to rest up for the rest of the day. My advice for future attendees is to get there early. The bleachers fill from the bottom up and make latecomers climb over others to find the last few uncrowded seats. It was obvious that there were more than a few young women in attendence, dates for the Second Class Ring Dance on Saturday, each more fetching than the last. It's no coincidence that our great looking young Mids were to be accompanied by such an array of beautiful young women. The Navy band could be heard in the distance. They were coming. The Brigade of Midshipmen had formed into their companies and were marching in lockstep. Dressed in their black on black uniforms, rifles on their shoulders, they were The Brigade! Two Regiments that filled the field from one end to the other - two football fields long and what had been a quiet, grassy playground for a half dozen children only moments before was now an unbroken pattern of White Covers, brass buttons and polished shoes. The Navy Band gave way to the Drum and Bugle Corps and the Brigade performed the manual of arms at the echoed commands of the Brigade Commander. Bayonettes were fixed with precision and caught the glint of sunlight to flash at the ready as retiring members of last year's faculty were introduce and honored to the sounds of a fourteen gun salute on the far side of the parade grounds. The flash of the cannon, then the sound of the blasts brought the crowd to silence as sailboats cut across the bay in the background under blue skies and bright sunshine. Then, as each Company passed the reviewing stand, parents, brothers, sisters, all strained to chatch a glimpse of their Mid marching in parade. Somewhere in the crowd of parents, a Mother watched as their son or daughter marched off the field for the last time. I know I saw a tear roll down a cheek. Their children had become adults, Naval Officers filled with confidence, pride and purpose. As we found our way back to Herndon, the crowd had grown to a crush of standing onlookers. Those well chosen spots in the front row were now a memory. Cameras were in place for the Media complete with a CherryPicker mounted atop a truck to give the best vantage for the cameramen. The next hour alternately dragged and spead by as the lawns took on the look of a small town Summer Picnic. Small children played and tossed frizbies. Parents engaged in light conversations and laughed at the shared memories of the last nine months. Mids in camo greens were roping off the entrance corridor for the charge of Plebes that was to come. In the distance at Bancroft, the sounds of bagpipes filtered into the crowd. Sandi and I wandered toward Bancroft to witness and applaud the spectacle of the Pipes and Drums complete with four Mids dancing in traditional Kilts to a Celtic tune. It is truly a wonder that our Midshipmen can find the time asmidst the crush of Academics to practice and prefect such performance arts. Time for one last rendezvous with our Michael before he had to rush off to BWI to pick up his date for the ring dance. 0130 - Now the energy was beginning to build as Plebes began to fill the courtyard in front of Bancroft Hall. Jumping, cheering, Each Mid readying himself to take on the challenge of the Monument. Each new group of Plebes cheered as they enter the courtyard by those already there. Some being thrown into the air and carried about by their fellow world conquerers. This was their day. Herndon was about to begin. As we stood beside the roped pathway that was to be the Plebes' avenue between Bancroft and the Monument, the energy of the Plebe class could be contained no more. A single Mid had breached the line and began to run to the Monument. Then another. In a second, the charge had begun. It was 0150, not 0200, but Herndon was underway. A thousand or so Mids had begun the charge, screaming and throwing their shirts at the first young lady they could spot along the way. First came the attempt to dislodge the Dixie Cup by shear force of will and the possibility that a well directed missle in the form of a shoe might set the all time shortest assault on record. The volley came from every direction. A birrage of shoes flew toward the Monument, sometimes more furiously than moths around a August bonfire. Still the Dixie Cup remained, undaunted. What followed was the expected. Mids climbing over fellow Mids. A sea of sweating bodies, slick with lard and glistening in the summer sun. Time and again, forming a second tier on one side or the other, sometimes managing to link arms, only to be brought down as another Mid attempts to climb to the next level. The base is tiring. The hoses are to cool the Mids in the blazing sun but instead add to the mud that was once thick green grass surrounding the base of the granite mountain. Footings give way and the tower of flesh slumps again. An hour passes with still no perceptable progress. Each fifteen minutes, the official timekeepers sound the quarter hours with another cannon blast. Each time the resolve deepens. Not to be outdone, the ladies of the Class have been in there from the start. Every now and again, one can be seen climbing into the frey. Navy issue swimsuits are the uniform of the day for the Plebes and the women can be seen more easily at a distance against the backdrop of bare male chests. For their lighter weight, they seem more suited to the task of reaching the upper tiers but like their male counterparts find a foothold to be easily lost as the base is constantly shifting, crushed under the weight of those above. Everyone is beginning to tire. The base seems incapable of sustaining a foothold for the climbers for more than a moment or two. Then, a cheer raises in the croud of spectators. A Mid has reached the third level and swings a tee shirt toward the Dixie Cup. Still, the upper four feet of the Mountain remains covered in lard. There is no handhold and yet another valiant Plebe tumbles into the pile of bodies at the mountain's base. The cannon sounds - two hours have passed. The Plebes are more determined than ever. Another assault is quickly mounted. This time with teamwork and resolve. What took hours to amass the first time, now becomes a second and then a third tier as though it was a simple task. Within minutes, the anxious onlookers can see a determined Mid making his way to the top on the side facing the Commandant and the assembled dignitaries on the Chapel steps. Balance is maintained. The base is solid and unwavering. The moment is at hand. The Dixie Cup is ripped from its place and flung to the ground below. The cheer is overwhelming turning into a roar of approval from everyone in sight. But the task is only half complete. They must replace the Cup with a Midshipman's Cover. The ensuing exhuberance has collapsed the structure that removed the Cup. It must be rebuilt. The Plebes regroup as though working with one mind. A solid second tier is in place as quickly as if there were a scaffold in place. Then the third tier climbs quickly over the second. Why did it take so long before? It looks so easy now. Within four minutes a Mid can be seen with a Cover on his head, climbing briskly up the tower of fellow Mids. A reach. A gentle toss and the Cover is in place! It's finished. This Plebe class has passed into history. They are "Plebes no more!" The unofficial time by my watch was 2 hours and 6 minutes, making it the fastest time since 1993. By sundown, the grounds crew will have cleaned off the lard, collected the shoes and shirts and replaced the sod surrounding the Monument. No trace will be left to mark this victory of the Class of 2002 except in the minds and hearts of those who witnessed it. It was a moment of courage, of bonding. A right of passage that is fitting as an end to life as a Plebe at the United States Naval Academy. For those that were there, you know the joy. For those that couldn't witness the assault, I hope that this gives you a small taste of the day. Tommorrow bring the Ring Dance and another right of passage as the Class of 2000 move another step closer to Firstie. We'll post the Herndon photos as soon as they are developed. Probably by the end of next week. Sorry that your ol' Moderator doesn't have a digital camera or they could have been posted on the website tonight. Well, maybe for my birthday... Yes, this past weekend was a great experience as each of us shared in the excitement of Herndon. The Naval Academy has enriched our lives with the many traditions we have experienced this past year and as we look ahead to the years ahead. However, last night I received an upsetting phone call from my son. Apparently while he was at the Color Parade on Tuesday morning, someone slipped into his room and took a brand new $100.00 pair of tennis shoes that he had not even worn. This isn't the first time he has experienced this violation this past year, earlier in the year after Plebe summer, he had his briefcase taken with all the contents inside, these items were marked , yet no one ever returned them. Also, he had 2 alarm clocks taken from his room, and several personal items...As he stated, "it' s the fact that someone comes into your room and takes these items without a second thought, especially in an environment where "honor" is an important concept. He never reported these items missing until Tuesday, as he decided he had enough and reported it to the Company Commander, and after speaking with Captain Smith, he was alerted to the fact that there is a serious problem at the Academy, and several others have experienced the same thing, where valuables of up to $1000.00 dollars have been taken. Unfortunately a few individuals ruin it for everyone else... My Advice to "New Plebe" keep your personal items locked in your locker in your room. Perhaps keep any valuables at home to prevent any further mishaps. Additionally, my son expressed dismay that often he would return to his room after class and his computer would have someone's disc in the disk drive and all the paper would be gone from the printer. Initially, he stated that he didn't mind if someone used the printer...but too many liberties have been taken after a period of time and often left him without paper or ink to print his own work. At a briefing recently with the new 3rd Class, the Commandant spoke of his concerns about these practices and stated that in the work force of the Navy this would be unacceptable. Hopefully, these individuals will be caught and reprimanded for their behavior. After reading the message from Liz Stefurz...I decided I should speak up about a "bad experieince" my mid just went through yesterday in the yard. He was in the midst of the after-graduation-rush....clean out the room routine. He had left four pieces of luggage on the curb at some location just outside of Bancroft......there were friends, family & mids everywhere...helping their mids to move their things, etc. Scott left his four (USNA) bags unattended long enough to go inside to change into his now legal civilians clothes......since he now has another bar on his shoulders he's an official second class...but much to his dismay...when he returned minutes later...one piece of luggage was missing.....the one bag that contained all his civilian clothes, running shoes, about 40 CD's, a checkbook, his new cell phone charger (thank goodness he had the phone in his pocket) and he's realizing more and more things as time goes by. This too was not his first experience with having something taken. During plebe year...he had a credit card stolen, someone took that credit card and charged several restaurant visits in Baltimore & local pubs in Annapolis before Scott even realized it was missing.....it wasn't until we received the bill several weeks later that we began to realize what had happened. When Scott called yesterday afternoon he was so upset!!!! Of course he was mad at himself for having left his things unattended...but even more angry to know that a fellow mid had helped himself to his only civilian clothes...all his personal belongings...gone! He reported the theft to his company officer...and left a local phone number, in hopes that someone had picked it up by mistake and whould return it...but so far that hasn't been the case. As he realizes what was in that bag....his loss grows....looks like approximately $1200 or more. I quickly put together a Fed Exp package with civies from home...he leaves on his big cruise on board the JFK on Tues. We're hoping his things arrive tomorrow as planned, so he'll be able to enjoy his liberty in Puerto Rico in something other than Navy issue. Tomorrow he'll file a police report with the MP's or whoever takes care of the base. Our homeowners policy will cover a good share of his loss. But his disappointment in his fellow mids or one of their family members or friends......can't be replaced. I hope someone with some pull at the USNA is reading our messages...by the sounds of things...there are many out there who have experieinced something similar. It's time for tighter security measures! Who would have EVER THOUGHT this could be a problem at the USNA of all places!!! ;-( Sue Dalziel Scott 01' 26th Nashville *** USNA-NET post by: DALZIEL Scott 01 DALZIEL Ken and Sue Sdalziel@aol.com ~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~. by westpoint.west-point.org (8.9.1/8.9.1) id WAA07099 for usna-net-outgoing; Thu, 27 May 1999 22:11:40 -0500 (CDT) From: "Mike Zets" To: "" Subject: usna-net: Recent Problems... This appears to be a very real and very disappointing aspect of our society today. It had been mentioned before in another series of messages a few months ago that most of you will remember reading. Unfortunately, to answer Sue's implied question that perhaps "someone with some pull at the USNA is reading our messages", I must advise the membership that this in not the case. USNA-Net is an entirely "unofficial" and volunteer effort to bring about better communications between Navy Parents. We do not have anyone of an "official" capacity eavesdropping (lurking in InterNet parlance) on our collective communications on the Listservers. Therefore, little can be accomplished via this medium to correct the problem. My best advice to any Mid who experiences these types of problems is to use the proper channels at the Yard... Notifying his/her superiors and allowing the Yard to take care of its own as it is so very capable of doing. I'm sure that, while very unsettling and costly for the Mids involved, these incidents are relatively few and far between in comparison with other colleges and public places in general. The first warning my youngest son (now graduated) received as he entered as a freshman at his civilian university was to be on constant guard of his books, backpack and, in particular, his laptop computer since thefts of such items were a major problem on campus. Some, even occurring in broad daylight in the presence of the owner - snatch and run - like purse snatching. This understanding does not diminish the problem for our member's Midshipmen. Please warn your Mid to use the same caution while at the Yard as they would in an airport or other such public place. "Moving out" began immediately following Herndon for some Mids and the area surrounding Bancroft was a sea of belongings, cars, civilians, and Mids all hurrying to get out as soon as possible as Sandi and I witnessed for ourselves last Friday. An incident could easily have occurred within this meylay without anyone noticing anything being amiss. Even those standing right next to it. Our Mids may easily become lulled into a false sense of security about the Yard with its higher ideals of an honor code but it is still an almost wide open facility with large numbers of daily visitors and civilian employees who are not bound by conscience or a sense of brotherhood encouraged within the Brigade. Be always on guard. DODGE MEMORIAL DAY STOCK REDUCTION SALE PANTYHOSE TWO-FOR-ONE TO CELEBRATE MEMORIAL DAY On April 28, 1968 Lt. Col. William Cook took off from Tan San Nhut Airbase in South Vietnam piloting his RF4C Phantom jet with Captain Joseph Bors in the backseat. The two U.S. Air Force officers, attached to the 16th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron, were on a photo recon mission. When they were about 20 miles west southwest of the city of Chuu Lai all contact with the aircraft was lost. Both men were classified as Missing in Action. Sometime within the next year or so, I, like so many of my friends, acquired a POW/MIA bracelet. Mine was a simple band, made of some shiny silvery metal. Others had copper bracelets. But no matter what the material, each was engraved with the name and rank of a member of the armed forces who was either missing in action or thought to be a prisoner of war. Also engraved was the date he or she disappeared or was captured. My bracelet bore the name of Lt. Col. William R. Cook. I wore that bracelet faithfully, each day praying that he'd be found and returned safely, but knowing that I'd probably never really know the truth. As my attire changed from high school sloppy to college trendy to business neat, the bracelet eventually found its final resting place in my jewelry box. But I still wondered what had become of Lt. Col. Cook. Over the years communication and accessability of information has improved significantly. I now know that the shattered remains of this pilot were discovered and identified near Quang Nam, Da Nang Province, and that his status was officially changed to KIA (killed in action) on March 22, 1977. I also know that he came from Redwood Falls, Minnesota, and that he was born May 25, 1924. That meant he was nearly 44 years old when the Phantom went down, taking along with it all the hopes and dreams of William Cook, as well as those of his family. He wasn't some young hot shot jet jockey fresh out of Top Gun with a cool name like Maverick, as I'd supposed when I was 18. More likely he was a career Air Force pilot, with a wife and a couple of kids at home and some parents who were pretty proud of their son. He might have been planning on retiring, maybe looking for some nice quiet job back home and watching his children grow into good citizens. He was probably a fun-loving, church-going, laughing, smiling, walking, talking, hard-working, loving, dedicated and patriotic man. Now, what has this got to do with the Dodge Memorial Day Stock Reduction Sale? Better yet, what does the Dodge Memorial Day Stock Reduction Sale have to do with Memorial Day? To: mzets@mail.com, usna-net@navy-usna.org Yes, Mike, you have hit the nail on the head when you speak of civilians. Being the mother of two graduates, I have heard these stories over and over again for the past 7 years. The biggest problem (although I am certainly not absolving the midshipmen of any blame) is that USNA is a national monument. Over a million people tramp through there every year. My boys were swimmers and Lejeune Hall is an open building. You can only imagine the theft that goes on there with the number of civilians who have access to those halls on a daily basis. The rest of the world does not operate on the Honor Concept. The Naval Academy is a microcosm of the rest of the world, and certainly a much better place than most. But it does have its problems, as everywhere does. My bigger concern is the lack of security. I picked up the key for my Commissioning Week house from my Mid at 2 in the morning (he was on duty in the Main Office). My daughter was asleep in my van so I pulled it into T-court and locked it, then went inside. A half hour later I returned to my van. My daughter was awake and said that no one ever even knocked on the window to see why we were parked there. In today's world I would hope they would be more careful about strange, abandoned vehicles left in T-court in the middle of the night! After all, that building holds America's promise. Enough negativity! There are many positive things to relate about the Academy. Just tell our Mids to stay on their toes. There is no place where we can be free of these pesky problems. I wish there was. Go Navy! Beat Army! As he began his story, Reminiscing of his past. I was just a boy back then, I lied about my age. To get into the Army, And fight for the USA I love this country very much, It's still the very best. And I would fight to keep it free, And safe from foreign pest. We won that war, and I came home, My wounds had healed enough, To reenlist with other men. The Army made us tough. Then a little flare up, In Korea called us out. A threat against our freedom, Spreading fear without a doubt. There I caught a bullet, When I tried to save a friend. Another wound for Uncle Sam, They sent me home to mend. "Soldier have you had enough?" My Sergeant said to me. "Or do you want another tour, If ever there's to be?" We would train and fight again, If ever it need be, Because we love America, We'll fight to keep it free. It didn't take too long, Before my boys were off again. We were shipped off to a war, We thought would never end. I didn't understand it much, If it was wrong or right. But, I was a US soldier, And my country said, "Go fight." I never questioned orders, That were sent from up above. I did it for America, The country, that I love. I fought to keep my country safe, Again, in Viet Nam. Then, wounded I came home again, A victim of napalm. My fighting days were over now, And, I had given all. But, some had given more than me, Their names are on a wall. I am now well up in years, A soldier old and worn. I could only sit and pray, As I watched Desert Storm. So proud of our boys over there, Who stand for what is right. Freedom is the battle cry, The reason why they fight. Young soldiers fight for liberty, Protecting freedom's bliss. Old soldiers dream of by-gone-days, While fighting loneliness. We were heroes in our day, He said, and then he sighed. Forgotten in some VA home, And all my friends have died. I never ask for anything, Just wanted to live free. But, if you read this story, There are many just like me. Who fought to keep our country, Safe and free from every foe. Only to come home again, And have no place to go. Sadly, when the limelight fails, Heroes fade away. Some men fight the silent battles, Till their dying day. Please remember what it took, And what we had to pay. And join with us remembering, On this Memorial Day. Memorial Day is special, It is not just summer's start. The reason that we have this day, Should be etched on your heart. Lives were lost, and young men died, To keep this country free. So, take a moment on that day, To meditate with me. I am looking out of my window as I write this. We have a small pond/lake just past the parking lot and 5 sets of Canadian geese have taken up residence to raise their young. It is a marvel to see this when you can hear and see the trucks and cars on the exit ramp of I-90 mere feet from these birds. The image is a strong one. One of survival and adaptation against so many odds. Yet this is exactly what we, as a country, have done. We have met the challenge. In my life, I have been surrounded by men who have taken up the sword for our country, whether in combat or not - Mike served 6 years in the Navy, my brother and brother-in-law served in the Air Force (the latter was career Air Force), my father fought in W.W.II and my son's father (my ex) fought in Viet Nam. Both men believed in what they were doing and both men returned with scars that went deeper than the flesh. We have men (and women) like these to thank for our way of life. I am not sure that we can ever repay them for their sacrifices. Now, we have "given up" our own sons and daughters to the same cause - our countries freedom, and it does not matter that they may never see a minute of combat, they have learned something that so few of their generation have - to love and respect their country. I saw this in the eyes of the Mids in the stands at the Dedication Parade as the National Anthem was played. It makes me so proud of them all!! And of you all, who I now consider a part of my extended family. Enjoy the weekend, whether it is camping, a picnic, a cookout, parade, or just watching the Indy 500 on TV, you will all be in Mike's and my thoughts. With the climbing of Herndon another class has passed on to be "Plebes no more!" It's hard to believe that I-Day is just a few weeks away for yet another class of Plebes. Between then and now, virtually every Parents' Club from California to Maine will be hosting a Send-Off Picnic or get together for the next class of incoming Plebes and their families preparing them for what is to come. What better occasion than this to introduce every new Plebe family to USNA-Net? You've all enjoyed the benefits and advice that are a part of this Listserver. As repayment to the cause, I want a promise from each of you who has benefited this past year that you will do everything in your power to ensure that every single Parent you meet between now and I-Day will know about and subscribe to USNA-Net. You, our members, are our best advertising. Most of us can offer personal testimonials to the worth and effectiveness of being able to ask questions and get quick and informative answers from others on the Net, especially from Upper Class Parents who have the experience of having lived through Plebe Summer and the Dark Ages. Please pump up the Net to everyone who will listen and even to those who won't. The only way to reliably communicate with a Mid (particularly a Plebe) is via the family computer and email. Since the computer's right there in the spare room or den, let them know that the way to get the answers to their questions quickly is on USNA-Net. And while I'm making you all feel guilty about using the Net and what you "owe" in repayment.... You owe it to the next class to stay involved. Even though you may not be a Plebe Parent any longer, please stay with Plebe-Net and share as others have shared with you. Without upper class parents, Plebe-Net would become the Blind leading the Blind. And just because your Firstie has graduated, there are still many reasons to stick with our Listservers. You've made many friends and there are loads of familiar names in your in-box everyday. It would be a shame to leave them all behind. Even better, why not convince your new Ensign to become a member? Any advice from a Mid would bring a wealth of information that is not available otherwise. Membership is definitely open to graduates (and their families). There's also no reason that your Blue and Gold Officers cannot be members, listening to the pulse of the Yard on a daily basis. Most are too busy to be completely involved but just reading the messages from time to time will keep them in touch. Pass along our web address and badger, threaten or beg everyone you meet this summer to join. It's free and the more members we have, the better the Net will work for all of us. Now remember, you promised to bring in at least one member for everyone who's currently on our list. Didn't you? They said that they were running without escort from law enforcement. They appear to be close to schedule. If anyone on the USNA-NET lives close to the route they should go out to support them. If anyone has friends in law enforcement or politics, get them on our side. They are entering tornado alley and the heat is on. They will need ice and cold drinks. They seem to like big cookies and milk and Gatorade. BEAT ARMY!!!!! John and Deb Hefner *** USNA-NET post by: STOKER Michael 00-10 ZETS Mike mzets@mail.com
