My husband's name is Peter Paul Liebert IV . We have two children......Pippa aged 24 and professional chef living in Annapolis and our mid Peter (V) who is a firstie this year.....I can't believe it has passed so quickly (at least for us) He is ranked #1 on the Navy Squash team (for those of you who don't know what squash is..think inside court .....ball the size of golf ball.....no bounce until it heats up....and elongated and smaller tennis racquet..now think .play off all four walls..not a good description.... suffice it to say that his tennis and others who have come to be educated on it have said that it is so strenuous that there is no way they would survive....much harder than racquetball.....ok......now on to the requested stuff..... Here in SE PA we have a lot of mids....and actually we are celebrating our 10th anniversary as a parents club this year....no plans yet but will definately mark the occassion with something....we have grown each year but are still a relatively small club ......our dues are $20 a year. Our Newspaper editor (for many years...bless his soul) will have to fill you in on the details of that operation...he does a yeoman's job of producing a wonderful publication about 4 times a year.... As to Plebes and PP's.......There are actually quite a couple of functions for them to attend before I DAY.... At the end of May our local Alumni Association hosts a sort of Welcome Aboard dinner all plebes-to-be And their parents are invited…..as well as any current mid parent and especially those who's mid just graduated…This year we have 37 Plebes for '03 and I would say that a little less than half of those families attended…..Mids in the area are also invited, however, usually there are not too many of them around yet… It is a fun evening where everyone gets to stand up and introduce themselves…the plebes say where they went to school …what they are interested in etc….the current mid families get to brag about their mid and the just graduated mid parents are presented with a 'diploma' for having supported their mid through four years at the Academy… Then in the beginning of June Capt. McRae (we are fortunate to have this wonderful man in our area…he always is doing something to boost the Academy and those who attend and his is our Blue and Gold coordinator) hosts a Welcome Aboard Buffet…..it is held on a Sunday afternoon and all plebes that he has on his list are invited…the list itself is a tuffy because….this year, for example, there were five or six on his list not on mine…and five or six on mine not on his…..in any event, of the total of 37 I would say that 23-24 attended…it was complicated by the fact that 3 of our plebes couldn't attend as that was their HS graduation day! At this event McRae is nice enough to invite us to present a little speech about the parents assoc. and to hand out materials to the incoming Plebe Parents….Then each plebe is introduced and mustered in by any current mids that are also attending….and pictures are taken of the group and each family….it is really a well attended function and well liked…… As to our functions……first of all the Plebe Parent Packages……which are handed out at Capt. McRae's buffet….this year we did something different. In the past we have handed them a brown envelope with association information inside..and lots of other information….this year we gave them canvas bags. I felt that we should have something more memorable to hand out…memorable to mark the occasion and memorable to remind each family to join the club…so I went to a local craft store and purchased 12x12 bright yellow canvas type bags…then several of us got together and stenciled the fronts and backs…on the front it says ' '03 USNA ******* welcome and on the back it has our logo…which is a sail boat with multiple sails forming the letters SPPA….looks great doesn't translate well in words.. this was not a very expensive item because I got the bags on sale for about $1.99 and made the stencils myself except for the stars and the welcome…and they looked great! Then we attached a 'bill the goat' button from the mid store (on sale for $.47)….inside we put the parents handbook and a Navy folder (also from Mid store with Bill on it too)…inside the folder we put a copy of the Trident from Herndon week (remember we only live 2 ½ hrs away and so when I was down there for the weekend I picked up 40 copies)..the post card of Herndon, applications for the Alumni Assoc., the Naval Institute, and our parents club….our name tags form, Naval Academy map, a flyer about the Plebe Parent Picnic (more on that later), a letter from our President ,a listing of sights on the web, a copy of our newsletter, a listing of our officers with their phone numbers and email addresses, a points to ponder sheet, notice about football tickets, notice about the All Academy's Ball, notice for plebe summer video tapes, a listing of all members and their email addresses, Naval Museum brochure AND a little US flag…along with the flag we give them information about how to prevent a mutiny being called ….. Any plebe families not attending the McRae event were mailed their bags…. Plebe Parent Picnic is held in the middle of July….about half way through Plebe Summer…and is pretty well attended…we usually get about 75% of the families…plus about 12 current mid families and about 4-5 mids on break…we hold it poolside at the Naval Air Station ….everyone brings a salad or dessert or chips or something and we grill hamburgers and hot dogs…and then we sit around tables, introduce ourselves…calm nerves, answer questions, share ideas and generally bond and have fun…We also ask each person coming to bring something to put in our Plebe Care Packages….and so we take all of those items and divvy them up into care packages for each area plebe..we pack things in plastic boxes and label them.. This has a dual purpose….it is a special treat for our plebes..to let them know we are thinking of them and it is the first pro-active thing a plebe parent can do…and those who attend usually put a little something extra in for their plebe…although we have gotten some membership checks before hand, this event generates the most new members…… Our meetings are held 4 times a year …..in two different locations….Naval Station at Willow Grove, and at Valley Forge Military Academy (they charge us a small fee)…..we also have two 'socials' and the All Academy's Ball, and then there are Tailgates!!!! Being so close we have a big participating group that goes to all the home games…and we provide a Tailgate for the mids after each one…Each one has a different menu and theme and they are EXTREMELY well attended…fun and food is had by all….Each parent coming brings some food or drinks…..Our first tailgate is traditionally 'hometown' food…for those plebes longing for a taste of home…so we have Hoagies, Tastycakes, and soft pretzels…you should see the swarm of Plebes come to partake and share with their newfound friends……. Enough for now….I am on my way to the Academy to transport home my son's stuff from his summer school room……His new (i.e. old, classic) car is a Corvette so natch…it doesn't hold anything much.. I have enjoyed reading the list since my son was an exchange student at Annapolis this last fall. I remained on the list since last June, hoping to follow along with some of the parents who had posted notes and most likely had mids who knew my son. However, with the volume increasing on the Listserver, it has become a norm for the list and with the influx of all the new plebe parents this summer I am unable to keep up with both my usafa list and the navy list. Best of luck to all the parents who have mids at Annapolis. We all are proud parents, no matter which service academy or path our kids choose. C1C Mike Deaver, my son, is currently in IFT this summer. One of 40 cadets in his class chosen. IF he does well, it's off to UPT next summer after graduation. This last year in Colorado Springs will be as fast as the first three. Again, best wishes to all. Please share my note with the lists, and thanks for doing a good job. The only problem with that is that anyone in Annapolis calling them in Annapolis is making a long distance call on their cell phone or whatever.....it's up to you.....many of the kids have one rate plans anyway. And I would definately consider one of those flat rate plans over the other kind....Our kids plans allow for 500 free minutes.....seems like a lot and I don't think either of them has ever used them all.....however, we have come close and if you think about how much it costs per minute if you go over the allotted minutes, it makes infinite sense to bump it up to higher number. That way you do not have to worry about it at all....I think I worked it out. If you get 200 minutes at a lower flat rate and then talk 225 minutes you are paying as much as you would if you just got the 400-500 min. plan and then there is no hassel....I love the Sprint one also because they have messaging capability and also paging capability and caller ID too!!! We have been very satisfied with the plans and the service.....I would recommend getting the $5 insurance on it though....so if it is lost you can get it replaced free rather than have to buy a new one.....There are many plans out there, you just have to find the right one for you and your mid....Hope this helps..... This is my first post so I thought I'd share a little background information with you all. Our mid recently returned from the first PROTRAMID rotation with a lot of excitement about his experiences. He has fallen in love with Pensacola, Fla. and the flight program there. He came home with some wonderful polaroid prints of his expenence on the sub USS Newport News. Encourage your mid to take advantage of the opportunities to experience all aspects of life on the sub and maybe you will have some great pictures of your mid for his scrapbook too. In answer to Art and Gerri:s question, at the end of his tour his group was transported back to the academy and they had to find their own transportation home. They were right on schedule on their return to the academy. Hope that helps you plan for your mid. Looking forward to reading more great posts. Best wishes to the new plebe parents. If your plebe really wants to be at the Academy, they will deal with plebe summer just fine. If they have gone because you wanted them to go, you may be in for a rough summer. Will keep you all in our prayers. To: usna-net@navy-usna.org It is wonderful knowing that there is so much support for new plebes and their families. I watched my daughter board a flight this morning in Los Angeles bound for Annapolis, class of 2003. It is good to know that others have experienced what we felt today. We have already met the most wonderful people connected to the Academy! Thank you! Go Navy! lynmbritt@aol.com *** USNA-NET post by: BRITT Shannon K. 03 BRITT Lyn M. ~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~. by westpoint.west-point.org (8.9.1/8.9.1) id TAA28416 for usna-net-outgoing; Wed, 30 Jun 1999 19:54:57 -0500 (CDT) From: Stamperhog@aol.com Date: Wed, 30 Jun 1999 21:02:23 EDT Subject: Re: usna-net: Plebe farewells... It seemed to be the hardest day to endure. Then came Day Two. I was in Missouri and my first born so at the Yard for I Day. He had a time of 6:30AM to report. I was awake early, well I confess never went to sleep. I worried all day and wondered "IF they find something wrong OR he changes his mind when would he call??" By sunset I knew he was probably OK. I got a phone call from the parent of a fellow Plebe whom Brad met during Summer Seminar the year before. This MidMom had caught a peek at Brad and had his address. I went to bed that night full of worries and wonders about that first FULL day as a Plebe. How much would they scream at him, how tired would he be, how scared, would he get hurt, would they call ME, ...? One week later I got the first letter and he talked about all the clothes he had and how he really liked it and how busy he is. Two weeks later we got that first phone call and with the sound of his happy voice I pushed all the stress of those early weeks behind me. He was happy, doing good and not getting yelled, much! :-) It is all worth it IF your Mid is happy with the new life they have chosen. The time passes all too quickly and you have to look at all the positives. Brad will be returning to the Yard in 11 short days. He has been home almost 6 weeks and he is a new person. The old Brad is still in there, but the new Brad is so confident and poised it makes you willing to give away the little boy you raised. Remember it is their life and choice and you must be supportive every step of the way, even if it hurts a LOT!! I would say don't worry Plebe parent's, but you will worry. Just remember we are all here and have walked in your shoes before. It will be a hard 6 weeks but when you see that proud Plebe at Parent's Weekend you will know it is all worth it!
