About the cell phone thing. My son has AT&T. It is a good service, but very expensive. He has been getting 600 minutes a month (no extra charge for long distance) at $90.00 per month. After Herndon this year, we took my daughter to the Sprint Store in Annapolis. They were terrific. Because she is in the military, they took $100.00 off the price of the phone ($129.00 value...cost to my Mid $29.00). The 600 minute plan is $60.00. This includes long distance. The phone will inform her when she is roaming, so that she will use a pay phone at that point. (i.e., - if she is in the middle of nowhere) She has been calling friends all over the country this summer. The reception is terrific. The Sprint Store is just down the street from Outback Steak House. Check it out! Go Navy! I have an AT&T 6160 Nokia Digital Phone ($199 retail) and get 1,000 minutes per month for $119 plus about $12 in taxes. I travel across the country and have found that it works just about everywhere plus it supports my digital modem in my laptop for on-the-road email. The plan has no roaming charges (a BIG plus) and no long distance charges in the U.S. (bummer in Canada!) Sandi just picked up a Sprint Digital, mostly for emergencies and such. She pays $29.95 plus tax for 120 minutes per month - No long distance and no roaming charges inside the Sprint digital network which is most major US cities and along most major highways. She also does not get charged for calls (in or out) of less than a minute - great for short "Running late. Don't worry." messages, etc. I had a GTE MobileNet digital phone that I ended up returning after three months and terminating the service contract because of miserable service. It was almost unusable anywhere but at home. No service. No tech support. No nothin'. Stay away. A small reminder. Plebes can't have a phone. Period. No Walkman - No Music CD's. Pretty strick rules against such things. Also, Bancroft may be inside the Sprint digital network but from what I am told, the reception inside the actual Building is very bad. Michael had to hang out a window to get a clear signal most of the time when using a friend's phone to call. Sandi and I are enrolled in AT&T's Personal Network Plan. We get all of our long distance calls from home, all calls using our calling card and all inbound calls on our personal 800 number for 10 cents per minute. We even got a big break on inbound International calls on our 800 number from Michael this summer from Paris, France at 22 cents per minute (vs $3.00 / min using conventional rates). It's a great deal if you're willing to enroll in the entire plan. I said I have a phone and Sandi has one. Michael doesn't. He says he really doesn't need one. Instead, he uses our calling card and 800 number. He just can't receive calls which is A-OK with him. He'd rather pick the time when he wants to talk with the outside world. Maybe he's on to something there. Most Mid's don't have time to be bothered by family and girlfriends while they're at the Yard. Plus, I don't think he wants to be too easily tracked down by friends when he's away from the Yard. I hope that you've all had a safe and happy holiday weekend. Sandi and I have been very busy. Here's what been going on... NEW MEMBERS... We've been signing on new members like we're giving something away for free. (Actually, we are.) On Friday night, we had 298 members in USNA-Net. As of this writing, we are at 307. And it keeps on coming. I think that the Advertisements in Trident last week and this have brought in some extras that we wouldn't have subscribed otherwise. Most new members for the past month have been (You guessed it.) Plebe Parents. Let's all extend a welcome to those that have just signed on and exercise a little patience while they all get adjusted to how things run on our Lists. WEBSITE STUFF @ www.navy-usna.org... We've put up three countdown clocks to help pass the time between now and Plebe Parents Weekend, Firstie Parents Weekend and the infamous NAVY-army game. You can access them from the Main Menu on the main page. We added a description under the Time and Temp Icon on the main page as well. It seems that more than a few members did not realize this was Annapolis Info and that clicking on the Icon takes you to a 24 Hour LIVE view of the Boat Basin in Annapolis. For the early birds, don't miss watching sunrise. The view can be breathtaking at times. This week we also added the Plebe Humor page for those that will come to appreciate it over the next few months as the Class of 2003 finishes Plebe Summer and moves into the Academic Year. TIPS FOR THE WEBSITE... - The site is best viewed at a screen resolution of 600 x 800. Low resolution settings on your monitor will introduce Scroll Bars that go away in a higher resolution. - The site uses FRAMES which means that for the best performance you should be using either MSIE 4.0 or Netscape Navigator 4.0 or higher. (These browsers don't support frames: Web TV 1, AOL 2.5 / Windows, AOL 2.7 / Macintosh, Internet Explorer 2, Lynx 2.5, Mosaic 2.11, Netscape 1.1 or any of these that are earlier versions.) - While we're talking about AOL... A member noted that she could not view the countdown clock. AOL does not support Java Applets and they won't appear for you if you're using the AOL web viewer. Get a copy of MSIE or Netscape Navigator and use it instead. - Our site counter at the bottom of the Main Menu uses bitmap images for the numbers and is not visible in any version of Netscape. MSIE shows them rolling over as each new hit is made and plays a little computer sound each time. If you can't even see the counter frame, your screen resolution is set too low or your default text size is too big. ADVICE FOR THE NEW MEMBERS... - Read the Welcome Message at http://www.navy-usna.org/welcome.html. It contains very important information that you will be tested on later this week! (Only Kidding.) :>) - Read the Rules of Operation. We're very serious about them on these Lists. (Not Kidding.) - Read our Netiquette page. It will help a lot in understanding how and what to say in a posting. - Never send the same message to BOTH Lists. Everyone is on USNA-Net and most of those are ALSO on USNA-Plebe. - Don't send postings in RTF (Rich Text Format). Our server has trouble sending them on to the membership and some members don't have email programs that will show them properly. Send postings ONLY is Plain Text (ASCII) format. If you see Icons for BOLD, ITALIC or FONT at the top of your email composition screen when you are composing your message, it is being made up in RTF. Don't send it that way. - Don't send a message to a member AND to a List that the member belongs to - either directly or via "CC:" He/she will get it twice. Once from the direct address and once again as a member of the list. - Don't send a message to the list that contains an answer to a question or a follow-on to a conversation that has taken place "Off-Net." No one else on the list will know what you're talking about. - If a question should be answered directly to the questioner, then send the answer only to him/her. If you feel that the entire group could benefit from hearing the answer, then send it to everyone. - Remember that every time you hit the send button you're sending out about 300 email messages. RE-READ your message BEFORE you hit the send button. Check it to see that it says what you want and THEN send it. If you forgot something trivial, let it go. Don't send out a correction message unless it's really important. - Listen in on the posting for a while if you're unsure of how this all works. You'll get the hang of it soon enough. - Remember that we hail from across the globe and encompass many DIFFERENT political, religious and racial communities. Leave out religious references all together, at all times. It's not that we don't believe. It's that many of us believe VERY differently than others. OK! THAT'S IT. I guess I'm done for the week with business stuff. If you have questions about the above, drop me a line at mzets@mail.com. If you have questions for group, by all means, post them and you'll be surprised at the number of answers that you will get. This is a great service. We are are one of the new members that signed up since Friday and I have been eagerly reading all postings ever since. We are Barbara and George Dodge, the parents of Damien A. Dodge, class of 03, Company C, 6th platoon. We hail from Manassas, VA (only about an hour and a half to two hours from Annapolis depending upon Washington DC area traffic). We will be joining the Nothern Virginia Parents Club shortly. I am a retired Army Colonel now working for a Computer Services company (GRC International, Inc.) in Northern Virginia. Barb and I met in Vietnam where she worked for the American Red Cross (Nov 70 - Nov 71) and I was an Army helicopter pilot (Sept 70 - Sept 71) in the 101st Airborne Division (Airmobile). Our family has seen service in several of the branches over time. Barb's father served in the Army in the Pacific during WWII while my father served in the Army in the European Theatre. Barb's father died when she was a teenager and her step father began his service in the Army Air Corps at the end of WWII then shifted to the Air Force when that service broke away from the Army, served in the Korean War and finally retired from the Air National Guard. My mother's brother served in the Navy in the Pacific in WWII and my paternal grandfather, George Flint Dodge, and his brother were both Navy about the turn of the century. George Flint Dodge (Damien's Great Grandfather) trained on Admiral Farragut's old sailing ship and then was assigned to a Dreadnought battleship. He was on the ship that returned the body of John Paul Jones from France (where he was originally interred) to the United States (now interred in the crypt below the USAN Chapel). He used to joke about having sailed with John Paul Jones. Barb and I home schooled Damien through the 8th grade. We thoroughly enjoyed the experience and it helped solve the problem of changing schools when I was reassigned. He then went to Seton High School, a private school in Manassas, VA. Damien performed very well academically, played piano, took Karate lessons, and was a member of the weight lifting club, but did not play any varsity sports. He was afraid that the lack of a varsity sport would hinder his acceptance at the Academy but fortunately it did not. We look forward to reading the postings and hope to take an active part in all areas associated with the USNA. May God Bless you all. It has really helped to imagine where my plebe is at any given moment. My guess is many of us plebe parents feel the same. I know it cannot be as I imagine, but somehow it does help to feel connected. I also want to thank everyone who responded to my earlier question about insurance. I will be meeting with my insurance agents to discuss options. At this time I have another question about the configuration of companies and platoons. We have been trying to figure this out and have guessed that perhaps each platoon has 2 companies? In other words, 1st and 2nd = A company 3 & 4 = B This appears true until late in the alphabet based on addresses I already have. I'm guessing one letter must be skipped somewhere. Perhaps some of the upperclass parents could help us lowly plebe parents figure this out....Thank you in advance for your answers. You asked if they skip over a letter in naming companies. The letter skipped is J - the corresponding name is Juliet - which was the name of Custer's company which was totally wiped out in battle. They have since stopped using J-Juliet as a company anywhere in the military. Sad news is my daughter, Juliet, who aspires to the USNA class of 04, thinks perhaps she should change her name. I have not checked on them since January when Ted returned from Christmas leave so it very well could have changed and I hope so. A traveler is really powerless when it comes to a late arriving airplane. If it were my son or daughter traveling, though, I'd still check on it. Seems as though they operated past 11 pm but not to Annapolis since it's kind of out of the way -- but I'm only going on memory and it is generally not a very good memory. Let me set the record straight about Birthday greetings, email etc. to our Mids. FACTS... 1.) Every Mid has a right to PRIVACY. USNA will enforce this right with vigor. 2.) Moms love to brag about their Mids and send lots of mail. 3.) Most Mids (especially Plebes) love getting mail. 4.) The USNA does NOT want information about Mids given out to the general public. We have a bit a problem with conflicting needs here. SOLUTION: If you are a relative of a Mid AND you know for FACT that your Mid would appreciate a greeting card or email on his/her birthday (even if it's from a stranger), then feel free to post his/her email address or PO Box to the other members of the net. Your Mid will probably get forty or fifty birthday greetings as a result. If, however, you're not sure, then DON'T SAY A WORD! It's better to say nothing than to cause a problem for your Mid. (Your Plebe MAY also get a lot of extra harassment from Upper Classmen over the mail and, if they find out it's his/her birthday, a lot of extra STUFF to deal with on that day. BUT it depends on his/her company and the Upper Classmen that find out. It varies widely.) That's the "Official" Moderator Response. (Personally, I think it's a great idea and one that will brighten your Mids special day. As the great Douglas Adams once said, it's "Mostly Harmless." Although, he was speaking of the entire planet, not just your personal center of the Galaxy, your Midshipman.) On a related note... In one of the postings in the past day or so, a parent gave out the name of a roommate of her Mid and asked to hear from the parents of that roommate. First, THAT is more of a violation of the Privacy Act than the birthday thing. The USNA guards all Mid related info (including who rooms with whom) very closely. Next, remember that there are about 4,000 Mids on the yard and we number just over 300 parents - less than ten percent. The likelihood of the roommate's parents being a member of the net is pretty slim. Maybe in a year or two the numbers will be different but for now it's unlikely to find the person you're seeking by asking, via the net, for them to respond. That's about it. If you have questions or comments about these matters, please respond directly to me at mzets@mail.com rather than discussing them over the net. I started the book during his Plebe summer, but after about page 30 had to put it back on the shelf until a future time. I couldn't handle reading about those things Darren really didn't want me to know about at that time anyway. Some things are better not known by Moms still haunted by their departing Plebes' faces. Besides, many policies have changed at the Academy since 1971. The physical severity of some of the actions by upper class as portrayed in the book simply are not permitted on the Yard anymore. Also, according to a friend of mine who graduated with Turnowski, there are several inaccuracies in the book, such as the date on which USNA was founded! Just the other day, Darren gave me a copy of A Sense of Honor, and I think I'm ready to take him up on his invitation. Subscribers are mostly West Point parents with a few Annapolis parents. They have tried to make it general to 'academies' and would welcome other academy parents who wish to participate but I'm not sure how they would connect. Those of you who wish to join over 200 other academy families in prayer for our cadets/midshipmen and families are welcome to subscribe to the prayer net listserve. We have witnessed miracles in many lives and shared spiritual support in times of great need. The prayer-net was established as a listserver of the WPP-net on September 16, 1997. The impetus for a prayer-net came as a result of a request from a cadet for prayer for a seriously injured plebe. A message was posted with information that the Air Force Academy had a parent prayer-net. It has taken off from there. Dolf Beil was instrumental in setting up the listserver and in mentoring its management. We are indebted to his service and support. Thank you Dolf! MISSION STATEMENT: Prayer-net is a listserver devoted to providing a communication link between WP-org members (parents, grads, and staff) who desire to use the power of prayer to rally spiritual support on group issues as well as specific concerns e.g. illness or injury,in supporting members of the West Point and Annapolis communities. You may subscribe by sending your request to Ruth at < MnRMcDhu@ix.netcom.com> All prayer requests are posted through the moderator so as to protect privacy of parties involved. If you have questions or need further information, please feel free to contact Ruth at the above address. You will receive a monthly update of prayer concerns as well as reports of answered prayers. The name is First Class, Women Join the Ranks at the Naval Academy, written by Sharon Hanly Disher. I must confess, I have not yet read this, but my 17 year old aspiring candidate for the class of 04, Juliet, read it and felt it required reading for female Mids to be. She has devoured every single piece of material available and feels that Plebe was "awesome". Also, I remember reading, I believe in a newspaper article in the Capital, that Sense of Honor and the author Webb, were not thought well of by the administration at the academy. The article said Webb was an "unwelcome guest" at the signing he attended on the yard. Does this ring a bell with anyone? One more note, a friend gave my husband The Nightingale's Song, by Timberg, as a gift, at our son's graduation party. He never had the chance to open it until after we had dropped Rich off for Plebe Summer. Over the next few nights, I watched as the color drained from his face each time he began reading. He said he was terrified of the environment in which he had left his son, and finally put the book down, to be picked up again, only after Parent's Weekend confirmed our sons successful conclusion to Plebe summer. Of course, in reality, everything has changed at the academy, since the era of that book, and Mids are now challenged in different ways. Thank goodness, or how would we parents ever survive! Wishing you all great summer reading. This posting by Gerri was bounced. I am sending it along to you. You can reach Gerri at: ballpart@primary.net Sandi ==========================Original Message===================== Hi to everyone. I have been quietly reading all the postings and remembering all those emotions. Now with a 2nd Class Mid in the 28th company, it does get better but there are still those moments. Hang in there Plebe mom, you are in a class of MOM and DADs that is so awesome and elite, it makes your head spin to think of all the things are Mids are and will become. Always remember to ask about any Military reduce rates, etc. You would be surprised. Some are individual exceptions, like the time I got a refund on an airline ticket that was suppose to be non refundable, because I mentioned orders were changed and he could not come home. Just because the supervisor on duty had a brother at the Academy in years past and remembered those days. Sprint gave me a better rate on an international calling card when I mentioned that my son was on a training mission in Bahrain with the Naval Academy. He very quickly informed me that all military personal are entitled to a reduced rate and waived the credit card rule. It still amazes me the awe in peoples voices when they respond about the Naval Academy. Keep your chins up , mail going to your Plebes and mids and the rode will get easier. When you down, give someone in the USNA family a call or send a "sobbing" email to someone and we will be there to pull you up or just listen. There is nothing that would be new to any of us. We have heard it all or been thru. Now for my question. I know the Brigade reforms on the 20th of August. But when do the mids have to be back. Is it still the standard 1800 (6pm) report time or do they have to be back the day before . My Mid doesn't have a clue (and he is 2nd class) some things never change. Any HELP. I need to make airline reservations. Cell Phone comment. My son has a Sprint phone also and loves the service. He can get out on his cell phone from within his room in Bancroft. However, Sprint has a plan they don't advertise you have to ask for it and it is called the Student Plan or the All Nighter plan, It is 70 peak and 500 off Peak. for $24.95. It does cost 10cent a minute for long distance, But the only long distance is home to us and we have a 1800 and so it is long distance just airtime. Even so my home long distance on the weekends when he usually calls is only 5cents a minute. The only disadvantage I think is that Sprints off peak on this plan is 9pm on the week nights. But he very seldom makes calls that late on the weeknight. It works for us. He has a local 410 area code because that is how he keeps in touch with his friends up there and his sponsor. Thanks for the ear and as always for all the wonderful information. My mid is now on the first leg of PTROMID and will be back home in 3weeks if I get him a ticket home soon. Once again when do mids have to be back for the Brigade reform. You will soon learn that they do not want to go back a day before they have to. They treasure their time home . I would recommend adding the "Shipmate" magazine, published by the Naval Academy Alumni Assoc. In addition to news of each class graduated from the Academy, there is a wealth of information relative to current happenings at the Yard, news of Alumni Chapters throughout the U.S. and other countries, etc. You do not have to be a graduate of the Academy to subscribe to "Shipmate". Pick up a free copy of the magazine at Parents Weekend from a NAAA staff member for review. If you are within decent driving distance of Annapolis, attend the Home Football games. Obtain season tickets or individual games when possible. The Brigade March into the stadium in an exciting event. The Tailgate parties are a truly rewarding experience. Particularly after each game, the Mids are quite hungry, and we prepare plenty food and drink for our Mid and her friends, especially the football players. When the Mids win, the upperclassmen go easy on the Plebes, if they lose, activities are normal. Hope 03 is well represented at the games this Fall. We thought that we would pass on two suggestions, and hopefully they will be useful. First of all, they need extra money. The Midshipman aren't use to having to purchase their meals, plus they are away for a long time. They need someway to pay for their stay in the BEQ or BOQ. The Academy does reimburse them for the lodging, but they have to have some means of paying for it. Secondly, the submarines are cold, and Thomas said that he should have brough a pair of long underwear, a shirt especially . We hope that the Second Class find their assignments as good as our son did. He was really pleased, and he got great insight into life on a submarine. GO NAVY/BEAT ARMY! First, everyone has hidden agendas, although they may not be conscious of them. Public Affairs has a hidden agenda too -- to put the best possible light on the Academy, regardless of how well that conforms to any independent, objective truth. Journalists (and that has been my profession, until recently) often make mistakes, come in with wrong assumptions, play out bad preconceptions, and in the end do stupid things. All of which makes them just like other people. In general, however, they give an enormous amount of credit to the USNA. The vast majority of them do what amounts to nothing but puff pieces about the Academy and its midshipmen. Others do serious work showing the full range of the Academy experience, which may include some negative points, unless one is prepared to contend that the Academy is perfect. (For two examples of rather interesting journalism about the Academy, see: (1) a series about plebe year in the archives of the Baltimore Sun's website, with good articles and great pictures, and (2) a serious examination of the Academy, including some faults in its selection process, in the latest issue of Proceedings, the magazine of The Naval Institute. (Presumably, the poster of the original advice does not contend that The Naval Institute has a hidden agenda.) ) But it is especially bad advice to be so worried about the press that one avoids them. If your local newspaper calls because it wants to do a little story about its local boy or girl off at the Academy, for heaven's sake, don't freak out and call Public Affairs asking permission. The Podunk Gazette is not out to get the USNA. Work with them. Tell them as much as possible. Do a good job of telling *your* story, and more often than not it will become "their* story. One of the great faults of the press in general is that it's pliable for those who know how to bend it. Use the great story you have, and things will usually turn out just fine. Paul Neely parent of David '03/16 PS Contrary to some postings, it's also incorrect to refer to AUGHT '03. Aught means "0". I am Susy Tuthill of Hinsdale, Il., a suburb of Chicago. It's been a week since I got back from I Day, where I left my son, James.(03-08 D). I never would have made it through the day, or the experience, without the help supplied by the Parents' Handbook provided by the Parents' Club of Northern Illinois. Thanks to all of those wonderful people! The president gave me this address, and I signed up this afternoon. I have happily spent almost 3 hours reading through your letters, information, and photos. WOW! I am the single Mom of three sons. James(19 years) is my oldest, and has wanted to go to the Naval Academy since third grade. It was his dream and his goal to be a career officer. So when on Febr 14, 1998, he received a letter from the Navy Foundation, he fell apart. I didn't know what the Foundation was then, but James did. It meant he would not be getting an appointment from the Academy. He told me his life was over, and had no purpose. He went down to the basement and played with his legos for the entire weekend. The same legos he had played with as a boy, making sailing ships, carriers, frigates, etc. He wouldn't eat or talk to me. I remember going into his room one night, just to be sure he was still breathing. At the end of the weekend, Sunday night, he came up to the kitchen and announnced he would accept the Foundation's offer. (For those of you unaware of the Navy Foundation, it offers young men and women the opportunity to spend a fifth year in high school, in exchange for an appointment the following year, provided certain criterion are met.) When reminded that he would be giving up a year of his life, to repeat classes in which he had already excelled, he answered, "what's a year compared to the rest of my life?" I knew then that James would do whatever it cost to get to Annapolis. He spent a post-graduate year at The Hill school in Pa. There were 4 other Navy Foundation students there. They formed a tight group, and endured a very structured, academicly tough, restricted year in boarding school. Looking back at it now, it really prepared him for plebe summer. I am so grateful to the Navy Foundation. Are there any other Foundation parents or graduates out there? I would love to hear from you. Patterson) To: USNA-Net Subject: usna-net: Reef Points For those of us who might be interested in the defintion of the term "reef points", I have paraphrased it as described in the book "Sailing as a Second Language" by Fred Edwards, USMC, a Coast Guard licensed captain, instructor, and contributor to several major sailing and boating publications. Additionally, I added some personal comments. Reefing is the act of "shortening" or reducing the functional area of a sail. This is done in order to maintain a balance of sail aloft with the wind velocity and sea conditions. In dockside bull sessions, one might often hear, "it was blowin' so hard, that we were carrying only a storm jib (a small, very heavy canvas sail on the forestay) and had gone to the third reef in the main" (the sail which is attached to the aft edge of the mast and can be raised up and down thereby increasing or decreasing the exposed area). When a mainsail is "jiffy" reefed, often called "slab" reefed, the sail is partially lowered using "luff" (forward edge of sail) and "leech" (aft edge of sail) "earings" (lines attached or passed through grommets in two or three places up and down the fore and aft edge of sail) to secure or tie off the new "foot" (bottom) of the now reduced-area sail to the "boom" (the horizontal pole which connects to the vertical mast and forms the lower support for the mainsail. The boom, during gusting winds, is also quite able to crack an unsuspecting plebe, mid, or other seagoing citizen in the back of the head causing unplanned man-overboard drills - a good reason for reefing before bad weather sets in). The excess loose material along the foot of the sail is called the "bunt". It is secured by furling lines - either a single line laced around the bunt or by several short pieces of line called "nettles". These lines can be sewn to the sail, parallel to the boom, where they and their points of attachment are called "REEF POINTS". The furling lines can also hang on each side of the sail from grommets set in a horizontal strip of reinforcing material, a "reef band" which has been sewn into the sail. On our boat, we shorten sail to 1st reef between 16 and 20 kts, depending on sea conditions. If weather is deteriorating and gusts are spiking above 28-30 kts, we are already pulling down to the second reef and have furled a good bit of the genoa (the large jibsail on the forestay). If conditions continue to worsen, we go to the third reef and replace the regular genoa/jib with a very small, very flat, heavy weight storm jib and wish we were at happy hour somewhere in Annapolis. For further information, the stiffening strips, made from various materials, which are found in most mainsails are called battens. They vary in length from several inches to several feet. They are inserted into "batten pockets" (sewn-in sleeves) from the leech edge of the sail and go forward toward the luff of the sail. Some sails even have full length battens which go completely from leech to luff (commonly seen on many catamarans). These help maintain sail shape / efficiency in light air and can also aid in extending the useful life of the sail. Although, I suppose the above does not directly relate to being a USNA parent, some of you might have the opportunity to sail with your mid on the "knockabouts" or perhaps at a later date, on the 44's. A little "sailing" lingo might prove fun and even useful. If there are any parents out there who hear unfamiliar nautical/sailing expressions and terminology, Teresa and I would gladly check our reference library as forty-five plus years of sailing have resulted in a hundred or so books and manuals on the subject. I will happily try and post on the list-server ASAP as long as it can relate to Navy sailing, mids, bay info needed by parents, etc. and our moderator approves. It will, of course, be commercial free. For ten years we have kept a boat near USNA just over the Spa Creek drawbridge and live aboard when in the Annapolis area. We do try and time our vacation days so they fit USNA activities and we use any remote excuse to leave Tennessee and head for the bay. You will receive a new wsock32.dll file that will begin e-mailing copies of happy99.exe to everyone you send e-mail to. You may then receive messages concerning the "cute fireworks" from the unintended recipients of your e-mail. This is the tip that you've contracted the e-mail virus. Although my husband is soon to be the XO of the IKE, he doesn't seem to know much about the Navy when it comes to the Naval Academy because he didn't go there - which leads me to my dilema. Our son is a plebe this year, and we wanted to get tickets for the games. My HUSBAND assured me that there would be plenty of time to buy tickets. Since he spends so little time with us, I usually never listen to him and just do what I want. This time, however, I thought I'd be a good wife and let him be in charge. OK. BIG MISTAKE. As most of you know, the tickets were sold out July 1st. Of course, if he had been at sea, I'd have bought the tickets while we were there for I-Day. OOOPS. Now, to save our marriage, he has to find at least 2 (two), preferably 4(four) tickets for the Army/Navy game. Would anyone out there care to help keep a Navy marriage together a little while longer???? If you know of anyone who has tickets to spare... please put me in touch with them.
