I apologize for the duplicate posting. A friend of my son is planning to visit him Labor Day weekend. Does anyone know of a "cheap" place to stay? He is uncomfortable asking his sponsor for assistance and there probably would not be a place for her to stay at their house. Does St. John's have a dorm where she could stay? If a hotel/motel is her only choice, does anyone know if she will have trouble paying cash (she has no credit card)? Will an 18 year old be allowed to register without an "adult"? If any of you experienced parents/sponsors can share your experiences, I'd really appreciate it. If you have a specific place in mind, you probably should e-mail me privately, so that we adhere to the Rules of the List. Thanks in advance. It is so wonderful to have people let us know when they have scene our mid and let us know what she is up to. We have missed two phone calls now and I feel like I am still in the dark about some of the things going on. Are there any parents of midshipman who are on the women's softball team? I had posed this question earlier and felt that it was overlooked with all of the school discussion. Now I am wondering if anyone knows more about this club sport. I tried to find info on the sports sight, but since it is a club sport, it isn't there. Does anyone here have more specifics? We understand they will be playing the Air Force Academy in a few weeks. Do they actually fly to Denver? Do club sports warrant a team table? Mollie was "spooned" by the pitcher of the team, so now they are on a first name basis. Can you tell I haven't talked to my mid for awhile? Dad talked to her while I was at the grocery store and now I have more questions! She has gone to PA with the Women's Glee Club and this week-end I believe she is going to Virginia Beach with the Protestant chapel choir. Does anyone know where they will be singing? If you happen to see her, I'd love to get another "Mollie sighting". Any help you can provide on these two areas will be greatly appreciated. It is not considered an in season sport right now, so they do not have team tables. They have a web page at the USNA site. They now have two practices on Monday, Wed. and Friday, morning weight training and then afternoon rowing. Every afternoon they are at the crew house and early Sat morning. I think they weight every Friday, but that might not start until the true season starts. I know they had to weight under 170 on Sept Ist or start a diet program. Not everyone goes to the meets. They send two to three boats and that is based on their erg time and speed in the water. It can vary from meet to meet. Josh, my mid was able to compete on a plebe boat and he was also put on a Varsity boat for a few meets. In the spring they get to go to TN for spring break or they can go home. Josh went to TN. Josh really loves the sports and has made some wonderful friends. They do stay in shape all year long, so the PRT is easy. The Plebes miss a lot of the parades etc because they are at practice. That team won the Second Annual Women's Fast-pitch Softball Club Championship held in Clinton, Utah, this spring. Navy got off to a slow start, dropping three straight games, but came back to defeat Air Force in the last pre-tournament game while battling temperatures in the low 40's and 50's and canyon winds clocked at 100 mph. Navy proceeded to go undefeated in elimination play and beat Idaho State 6-0 in the final. It was a rare treat to have any Navy sports team visiting Utah, and our loyal parents' club sent representatives to every game. Even the local Navy recruiters stopped by to watch a part of the final! Later in the evening, we hosted a dinner for the team, their coach Mr. Thomas Silvers and officer representative Lt. Darlene Grasdock at the home of one of our members. We had a great time, and we hope to see the team again in 2000. When Navy scores all Plebes are supposed to go to the end zone and sidelines and do as many pushups as the score... thus..in the fourth quarter if the score is 42-27 Navy...and they score another touchtown....the plebes must then do 48 pushups!!! and then sort of hang in mid air waiting for the extra kick to add one more!!!!!! And be prepared for the cannon !!!! It sounds at every Navy score....at the quarters!!!! The parents that took offense need to "grow up and let go." My son is prior Marine. When my and I went to his graduation, I show the same "mother duck" that you saw. So, have we (that's NAVY, see I already feel part of the "family") ever had a game there before? Does Navy do a March-On? Do tailgate parties still take place? I assume the mids are bussed there, so if we're at the game would our plebe be able to meet us after and then come with us? Police will stick to a traffic pattern they've used for the last two years, which involves closing roads and rerouting vehicles, said Sgt. Paul Gibbs, special events coordinator. "We're running everything the same way as last year," Sgt. Gibbs said. Police will put up a rolling roadblock when the Brigade of Midshipmen marches to Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium before the game, going through Gate 4. The mids will march up Main Street to Church Circle, down College Avenue to Rowe Boulevard to the stadium. Kickoff will be at noon against Georgia Tech. From 9:45 a.m. until kickoff, Farragut Road will be switched to three inbound lanes from Rowe Boulevard to the stadium. Taylor Avenue will be switched to two inbound lanes and one outbound lane. " The normal traffic pattern will resume during the game. The pregame detour will be reversed after the game. *** USNA-NET post by: LIEBERT Peter Paul 00-25 LIEBERT Dorinda and Peter ~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~. by westpoint.west-point.org (8.9.1/8.9.1) id QAA01765 for usna-net-outgoing; Fri, 3 Sep 1999 16:55:24 -0500 (CDT) From: Amysoule@aol.com Date: Fri, 3 Sep 1999 17:55:22 EDT Subject: Re: usna-net: Football Games To: LIEBERTCO@aol.com, usna-net@navy-usna.org I agree that going to a Navy football game is exciting, but I think the fun starts BEFORE the mids form the "tunnel"! About PT gear, your mid knows but there are only areas that they can be worn on the yard because its just that pt gear.Again as I said they'll know but they aren't worn at games only uniforms.Plebes and youngsters have to be in uniform Second class and firsties have to be in uniform during the parade and game and change into civies if they choose to for their company tailgates after the game is over. .Last year at the Army Navy game my mid (she was a second class) was in a group that worn Hawaii shirts during the game only, not during the parade or formal beginning . .The mids that wanted to do this had to send in all the paper work up the chain of command to get permission because they would be out of uniform during the game. They were given permission but had to sit in front of the Brigade and all together so it looked organized. If you remember or will really enjoy seeing this year the Navy side does have alot more spirit then the other side.......... One word of caution.....I had gone up on a business trip...and knew the game was a sell out...but I had made arrangements with an alumni ahead of time to meet him and buy one of his extra tickets...the plan was that I would call his cell phone and we would arrange a meeting place...BAD IDEA...with a crowd that large & so many trying to use their cell phones.......the cell phones did not work...thank goodness I realized early on that we would not be able to connect for ticket pick up....so I bought the first available ticket I could get my hands on.....for face value...thank goodness...so...if you're meeting your mid or anyone else...DON'T RELY on communicating with anyone via cell !!! :-) Enjoy the experience...it will be another very memorable one! I left home here in Pennsylvania at 0630 am and got to the Stadium around 0900 and met some of our area Parents in our usual area for our tailgate. The weather cooperated at this point with only an overcast sky. There was a tangible excitement in the air as the first game of the 1999 season would soon get underway. The cars were streaming in and the major tailgaters with tents, set up in their usual spots around the periphery of the parking area, were filing in and setting up...many people already had food out and friends gathering for pre game festivities. Wewended our way down to Taylor Ave.and across to Rowe to watch the last part of the March Over. Several of us sat on the grass and waited for the Mids to come. We had a wonderful time discussing the motivations for our Mids original desire to come to the Academy..... and their subsequent trials and successes....and as we talked, we realized that, as someone here on the net had said....The link between parents of Midshipmen is tight and great....for we truly do share in a unique experience, bond and emotions... ....one that someone with a regular college student cannot comprehend or appreciate to the fullest extent.... Soon we could hear the faint but strong beat of the drums and toot of the horns from the Navy Band that was leading the Brigade....and then we watched them make their way up Rowe Blvd. Some companies marching and chanting, some marching and singing, some marching silently, and some marching to cadence Hut Hut Hut..........And they looked so wonderful......that sea of white.....all heads held high...most 'eyes in the boat'......and as they turned the corner and the crowds watching them grew, so did their anticipation...and then their smiles.....and stolen waves as some recognized their family on the side lines!......It was a pretty relaxed group of Mids that marched....... We made our way back to the stands....to get in our seats before March On. And as usual,it was a spectacle to behold. The spirit of the game intensified......the team too to the field.....and as they lined up against their opponents I realized that this day was probably not going to be victorious in scoring anyway.....their line seemed twice the size of ours!! And the score of the game seemed to prove that point.....in the end......the cannon did not go off often enough to suit us Navy fans......It was a loss......but as far as I'm concerned...we didn't lose our pride, our courage and our effort......they did score against a ranked team.....twice.....and made headway many times when it seemed impossible...... And the rain held off until the latter part of the the third period.......I stayed in the stands as long as I could but needed to make my way to help set up our tailgate....We were fortunate in having brought extra tablecloths which were quickly improvised as covers for all the food......the rain let up some and when the game was over the hoards of Mids from our area (and some of their friends) descended on us.....They enjoyed the soft Philly pretzels, and the hoagies (subs or hero's for everyone not fromPhilly).....and the Tastycakes.... but the rain was not to leave us alone and several times we had to cover up the tables.....until the last....when as the rain seemed to pick up intensity we decided that it was time to pack up.......so we rushed to do our best.....until at one point several ofus looked at each other.......laughed, put down our umbrellas and let the rain soak us as we put things in our car trunks and vans!!! We were wet already......what was a little more at that point!!! And so it rained and rained and rained until it chased all but most hardy into their cars and onto the trip home.....I stayed a little longer....went over to a couple of company tailgates (where my firstie son was) and met a lot for his friends.....and had a great time chatting with the Firsties... all looking forward to Commissioning Week...even this early............and then I too headed home......through the rain once again!!! Sad to leave such a fun day despite the attempts by Mother Nature and Hurricane Dennis to conspire to keep it WET......... Yes, Navy did not win the game, but they did win a lot more then the average person could understand. Navy played against the 10th ranked college in the country, and they NEVER gave up. It shows the dedication those young men have keep going when the average person would give up. That to me is worth more then the points on the score board. I saw the spirit they had up to the final second. Unbelievable!! They have nothing to be ashamed of. There is only one bad thing about the game, and that is the so-called announcers. They did not give credit to Navy except for a few, very few times. I felt these announcers couldn't care less about Navy, and that GA Tech was the greatest thing on earth since sliced bread. But one redeeming quality came after the game. It was a comment made by Kellan Winslow made, I will try to quote him exactly: "GA Teach had huge players and Navy has smaller ones, but one thing that Navy would NEVER do, and that is to give up." I felt so much pride in this man that he would make that statement on National TV. He, I think knows the dedication, and pride our Mids have. It is a shame that there are not more men like Mr. Winslow on the airwaves. I applaud him! Marc F. Computer whizzes delete this message - Newbies read on... ============================================= TECH NOTE - Searching the Archives A number of you have asked about or complained about the archives and the difficulty in finding what you are looking for in a year's worth of email messages. THERE IS A BETTER WAY... First, a note on how the archives are organized. Each archive starts with a few files that are not email. By now you have looked and know which these are. These are followed by MONTHLY ARCHIVES. Each of these files contain ALL of the messages from a previous month for the List. These are compiled at the end of each month so this months messages would not be found in one of these but instead, in a file near the bottom of the list of files. All of the files have a note to the right of each file that denotes the date it was compiled. From these dates, it's pretty easy to find the messages for a certain date or period of time. While you can only search one Archive File at a time using the method described here, the following should make it a lot easier since you can search an entire month with just a few mouse clicks. Now, HOW TO SEARCH FOR A PARTICULAR SUBJECT... Let's say that you want information on "parking" at the Yard. Pick a file (preferably a Month File to maximize the search, let's say USNA-Plebe's Archive for August 99 - usna-plebe.9908) and click on it. Let if finish downloading completely before going on to the next step. Now it get Browser Specific... For MSIE... Our son called tonight to share a 'smack' letter one of his plebes had written to me about our son. This, of course, done under duress because the poor plebe lost the bet over the game. So the game was on Saturday and here we are on Monday evening and our son had a letter so well written, this midn could be a professional speech writer!!! Wish all of it were true :-) My husband and I both commented once again on the caliber of young men and women at the Academy. INCREDIBLE! I'd still be trying to write a letter like this well into next week if I had lost that bet. Cookies and Milk every night this week from another plebe. :-) It reminded me of our son's plebe year when he was allowed to wear an upperclassman's shades for a week as the result of good betting. I highly recommend it to anyone who gets the chance. I guarantee you will find them as interesting and congenial in person as they are in postings. I want to add my thanks to the many who appreciate the Burns' postings. Even though I am a frequent visitor to the yard, I find all of the Burns' descriptions to be uplifting, informative and entertaining. I learn something new with every installment! Thanks again Joyce and Bob, for your continued efforts. I have a few observations to add to the fine descriptions of this weekends activities on and about the yard. As I watched my Mid's company, the 22nd, approach, I noticed many of the Mid's I'm familiar with appeared to have very serious faces (not normally the case in the march over). I yelled "Yea 22" at the top of my lungs, and a bunch of them looked at me and flashed big smiles. They were wearing the big, ugly, yellow, fake teeth from the Austin Power's movies! It reminded me, even though they are all accomplished, highly motivated, polished Mids, they are still "normal" young men and women, with great senses of humor. Regarding the synchronized about faces and hat tipping which goes on at the beginning of each game - in the center of the first row of the top section on each side of the stadium is a Mid with two flags. Each is responsible for the signals which make the Mids on the field turn simultaneously, tip their hats, and call the cheers. With my eyes firmly on the Mids during the opening at each game, it only took me a whole year to finally notice the signal flags! After the game, a torrential rain began to fall, and to my surprise we still served over 300 Make your own Ice cream sundaes. I have never been as wet outside of a swimming pool, but it was still great fun. Later we filled the van with Mids and took them back to Bancroft. Still later, after warm showers and dry clothes we picked up a van full and took them to dinner. There is nothing quite like sharing a meal with a big group of Mids. The conversations are so interesting, particularly to our daughter, who is hoping to become a Plebe in the class of 2004. This weekend was particularly interesting because of the B&B we stayed in. It is near gate one, and from one window in our room, I could see into the windows of Halsey Field House on the yard. From another I could see Gate one. I am a night person, and while the rest of the family snoozed, I watched the continuous activity at Gate one. Also visible was Dalghren with the brightly lit windows. I felt so very close. Sunday morning, husband and daughter went for a run on the yard before breakfast, and got caught in yet another torrential downpour. The didn't mind a bit! I was reminded of a story the former management of this B&B had told me last year, when we first looked at the place, and booked our football weekend rooms a year in advance. The back yard of the B&B meets the visitor's parking lot just inside Gate one and beside Halsey field house. The B&B kept their wood pile just next to the fence, which made it a very convenient place to escape the yard for late night recons. The manager of the place was used to seeing Mids cross the fence late at night, while on their way out to paint the water tower before a football game, or put up surprise signs to greet the rest of the Mids during their March over. One night a Mid got is shoelace caught in the fence and was just dangling there, with no help in sight. The manager just quietly took out his scissors and cut the lace free, never saying a word and the Mid tipped his cover and bolted! This occurred about 10 years ago, but it continues to be one of the former manager's favorite stories. Coincidentally, the new management has relocated the woodpile! Sunday morning we had two hours to spare before attending chapel. We went to Lejeune Hall to take a look at the pool, and found a water polo tournament in progress. We watched as Navy was defeated by Queen's college. It was our first water polo match, but not our last. The endurance of the team was incredible, and we are looking forward to attending another match soon. One of the amazing things about the yard is the fact that you can find some kind of competitive activity going on almost every day. Another interesting observation was the difference between the navy players and the other teams in attendance. They all have on the very tiny Speedo bathing suits and the strange looking hats with the puffy ears, and they are all in very good shape, obviously required to keep from drowning while playing water polo, but the Navy team is short haired, clean shaven, and very discretely tattooed, if at all, while the other teams were often wearing lots of hair in lots of places, and many had pictures tattooed all over their bodies. Viva la difference! While in Lejeune we had a chance to take a look at the 10 meter tower. This is the tower the Mids must jump off without hesitation, in addition to swimming the 400 in under 8 minutes in order to validate swimming. Interesting how some think this looks like great fun, and others see it as pure torture. After chapel on Sunday we took another group of Mids out to a breakfast buffet, in the pouring rain, of course! As all parents know, these Mids can EAT. If I was the owner of a restaurant with an all you can eat buffet, I would cringe upon seeing a large group of Mids enter. Seriously though, all the restaurants in town are thrilled to have tables of Mids because they draw such positive attention. Hope you all had a great holiday weekend. (By the way, the plebes always have to bet that Navy will win, to guarantee that the PLEBES will be the losers of the bet. How sad that it usually works out that way, too LOL). My son told me that some of the plebes in his squad were going to have to: 1. Dress in brown garbage bags, and sing the California Raisins version of "Heard it Through the Grapevine" while standing on Red Beach (the terra cotta walkway around the back of part of Bancroft, used as a sun deck) 2. Fire the cannons at the Mexican Monument. This requires at least 4 plebes, 2 to "load" (falsely of course) and clean the cannons, and 2 to shout "BOOM"at the top of their lungs 3. Ride Bill the Goat naked at midnight. (Ben's roomie had to do this last year). Some of the other Labor Day weekend antics included "recons" where the upperclassmen sneak the plebes out of Bancroft after hours to do some mischief. I know of 2 of those that took place: 1. Several mids "liberated" a sailboat, sailed it up the inlet to the shore, and went to the 7-11 Store. Unfortunately, they were seen by the "Jimmylegs" (yard police) and followed. Evidently they called the Coast Guard, as a CG boat DID meet and follow them. They were chased across the foot bridge from hospital point by some Marines. 2. A squad set out to polish Bill the Goat's testicles (the statue that sits across from the tennis courts, on the corner by LeJeune Hall). They were all dressed in Cammies and carrying Brasso, but were seen by a Marine who was hiding in the bushes, so were unable to carry out their task. He also gave them a hard time about "defacing government property" (but admitted that cleaning with Brasso hardly applied), the whole time snickering and trying to appear serious. 3. A totally plebe endeavor: 4 plebes found a small car on the yard somewhere, and carried it into T-Court, where they left it for a while. As they were removing it, they were caught. But that's not the worse of it........the car they had placed in T-Court belonged to a 2/C who was not supposed to have has car parked on the yard, so now HE is in trouble, too. Dontcha know that 2/C will make those plebes "pay" for THAT prank for the rest of the year? Tecumseh was painted as Spiderman for the Georgia Tech game. I try to get a pix of him every time I am there (if he is painted differently). I plan to do a page of Tecumseh in all his disguises in the memory book. The game, FB-wise, was not to exciting, but the mids were great to see, and very impressive. They did some small cheer and tipped their hats to the crowd on the Ga Tech side before they took their seats. It rained sometime in the 3rd quarter. At the height of the rain, Navy scored for the 2nd time, and the plebes all ran onto the field to do their push-ups in a torrent of rain. It didn't seem to bother them. Pranks like this happen frequently, andare a fun sidelight that we rarely hear about. They are mostly harmless, and an outlet for the mids to do something "out of the box". I know they love do break the rules, when they can. BTW, I niced a few nice RED "03"'s spray painted on the very top of Mahan Hall's clock. The result of another recon, no doubt! A fun weekend, and I DID see a lot of plebes at the mall, at the movies, hanging out in small bunches and having fun. SMILING, in fact. So not to worry, they are not 100% miserable. Kate is in Crew, a sport we know nothing about but are anxious to learn to enjoy. She was a soccer player and track participant in high school but is always looking for a new challenge. Kate is 19 and had a year at the University of South Carolina in their wonderful NROTC battalion, which didn't come close to preparing her for USNA. We've been to Annapolis several times, once before Parents' Weekend, when we were surprised and thrilled to hear her reading the intercessions after the Creed at SUnday Mass. It was very difficult not to speak, but her smile when she saw us was worth the 4 hour trip. Church services are awe inspiring. Parents' Weekend was a blur - too much to do and we never got off the Yard for hours after liberty started. Too many people also - grandmothers, brother, boyfriend - didn't have much time for the heart to heart I craved. Time enough for the tears - and to reassure her she had made the right choice and to stick it out. By Sunday she was talking of Commissioning Week - 2003. We went for the Georgia Tech game - well worth the trip. THe whole atmosphere is uplifting. Finally got the time alone with our Mid that we wanted. Feed her and she'll tell you anything - as long as she doesn't fall asleep waiting for the food to be brought. She was able to get a chit to travel to my sister's in Fairfax, Va. which is an hour from door to Bancroft Hall. But the comments were wild - they don't want to see this every weekend! I loved just being able to watch her sleep - something we haven't need to do since she was an infant. I will say Plebe Summer gave me the chance to write some of the mushy Mom-type stuff you think but know your kids wouldn't sit still for - and then had her thank me for the many, many words of encouragement and inspiration. I love the site - we're real new to this stuff - our expert (Kate's 18yr. old brother Jack), is a freshman at the University of South Carolina - and left us with a keyboard that sticks and a worn out mouse as well as this awful name SGMOTDA. I've been reading the archives for an idea of what's been going on. I first heard of the site from a Plebe Mom from Tennessee at the formal parade on Saturday, her son was in Plebe Co. N. Do all returning plane flights have to arrive at BWI four hours before leave ends at any time during the calendar year? Specifically, the Sunday after Thanksgiving, we have our plebe on a return flight that arrives BWI at 3 PM. He thinks we should change it so that he is within the "4 hour window." Is there such a thing as this window and where can we find information on this and other travel/leave policies. All he could say was that it was for a bet with a 2/C. Since we were going down for the football game on Saturday he asked that I bring it with me. I quickly went out to the party good store and I did happen to find one even though the Halloween costumes are not out yet. Because she cut her hand picking up glass they were in more trouble. Of couse when they saw what happened, they immediately went to their company commander and told what they had done, thank the Lord they did this. Content-Disposition: inline Joe, the term "chit" is a shortening of the navy term "Special Request Chit", and, as the term implies, has to do with granting a favor. This is something that is going to follow our mids throughout their naval careers, and it is quite likely that they will be on the approval/disappoval end of these sooner or later. Having spent a "hitch" in "this man's navy", admittedly a long time ago, as an enlisted sailor, this is something that one doesn't forget. In answer to your uestions; 1). They aren't necessarily earned, but sometimes recognition of an accomplishment can turn into having a chit approved. For example, a 4.0 room inspection could lead to special liberty, but to cash in, the chit must be submitted and approved. 2). In my experience, they were not accumulated for use later. 3). Plebes are definitely eligible to submit a chit. 4). Normally, mids are bussed from the academy to the Navy-Army game. If you want to transport your mid either or both ways, he will need to submit a chit for POV(Privately Owned Vehicle) transportation. I believe they also have liberty in Philadelphia, and maybe even a "weekend", which means that they don't have to back on the yard until liberty expires the Sunday after-usually about 6 PM. This part may, or may not be the exact details, but I will forward this to my firstie mid for perusal and confirmation. Other examples of special request chits that I remember would be if one wanted to wear a beard instead of being clean-shaven as regulations required, a chit had to be sent through the chain of command and the commanding officer would have to approve it. Also, if someone had the duty, and wanted to go on liberty, he could arrange for a "standby" to take his duties, and again, a special request chit would have to be submitted through the chain of command. Hope this helps some. Don Gunkel Austin, Texas Bryan '00/17 nohitter on 09/08/99 03:33:32 PM To: usna-net@navy-usna.org cc: (bcc: Donald L.
