Thus, if you post a message to both the USNA-Net AND the USNA-Plebe lists, those of us who are members of the USNA-Plebe list will get double postings. To avoid double postings, follow the rules below (also these rules are on the USNA-Net Rules page). Postings Rule 1. NEVER send the same message to more than one List. If the message is of general interest to all list members then send the mesasge to the USNA-Net list. This includes all members, EVEN those on the USNA-Plebe list, therefore there is no need to send the message as a separate mailing to any other sub list of USNA-Net members. Postings Rule 2. NEVER send the same message to more than one List. If your message is primarily of interest to members of the USNA-Plebe list, then sent the message ONLY to the USNA-Plebe list, therefore not forcing parents and other members that are focusing there attention on other classes to have to wade through postings that do not concern them or their interests. If they were interested in Plebe items, they can subscribe to the Plebe list also but have chosen not to do so. Postings Rule 3. NEVER send the same message to more than one List. Save electrons! Certainly each of us has learned most of what we know about the Naval Academy from our direct association with it, and not everyone has had that advantage. I don't think it would be a bad thing to acknowledge FOX network's coverage in a positive way, and in a gentler, kinder way suggest that Midshipmen are Mids but not Middies, and that they are certainly not Cadets. As a wee club newsletter editor, I would appreciate knowing the facts, especially if I had erred; and am sure that a huge network commentator would feel the same way, since it is important to disperse correct information. We want to see the rare shots of cheerleaders, drum and bugle, band, and spectators. We watch to be closer to our mid and to try to understand what her life is like right now. We watch more closely than I have ever watched any sporting event on television for that improbable glimpse of our daughter............. We watched the first half of the game last night before going to bed. We were disappointed to hear our mids called middies and cadets, but those were honest mistakes. I did not get the sense that the sportscasters were malicious in any way and in fact I got quite the opposite impression. Those folks RESPECT the academy and took MANY opportunities to say that to the viewing audience.......... I heard over and over again how hard our team works, how they never give up, how they are usually outsized but never out committed, how the quarterback is perhaps the most intelligent football player in the game (Broadwater's, be proud..................), how they must fit grueling practice hours into their grueling academic schedules. The GPA's of several key players were given and each was aboove 3.4. These sports casters even took the opportunity mention several times that Coach O'Brien, (Boston College), graduated and coached at USNA. They also made mention that upon interview, when asked about his most difficult challenges in life, his reply was that his most difficult challenge so far in life has been getting through PLEBE SUMMER! When asked about his greatest accomplishment in life, his answer was "Graduating from The United States Naval Academy. I wish you all had a tape of this game so you could now go back and listen for the great press we got. Anyone who listened to the whole telecast knows that the announcers were extremely complimentary about the Academy and the Brigade. Yes, I too heard the "middies" and "cadets" comments, but it was obvious that they were honest mistakes by well intentioned men. Throughout the entire telecast, they spoke of the Academy and the Brigade with almost an air of reverence. Their comments about Tom O'Brien's remarks concerning the Academy were a huge compliment. I immediately e-mailed my mid son and passed them along. It was not long ago on this List that members were upset that many of the general public with whom they come into contact had never heard of the Naval Academy, or thought it was a school for bad kids. Now we get huge national positive exposure by a major network and because of a couple of small innocent mistakes, some of us want to castigate the whole broadcast team and network. Please, fellow members, if it is not too late. If you have not sent your negative admonishment to Fox Sports, give it further thought and hopefully you will regain your sensibilities and sense of perspective. That approach does not reflect well on the Academy or on us parents. I can tell you after having talked to high ranking members of the USNA athletic department, that having 5 Navy football games nationally televised is huge to the Academy. Let's not do anything to detract from our Academy's relationship with the networks. I strongly feel that the USNA athletic administrators would discourage such negative feedback to Fox. I just sent a thank you letter to Fox Sports for their wonderful coverage (with a minor comment that they are "mids") and told them how much my family and I appeciate it, especially being out here in Calif. where we don't get to see the games, the Brigade, etc., live. So what does this have to do with USNA? Because we've been designated a Federal Disaster Area, our Plebe just got herself a quick trip home. A very alert upperclassman put the wheels in motion for Lora stating that she will better be able to focus on the demands at the Academy once she could see for herself that we are OK. Lora said that she literally didn't have time to pack or call, but was just whisked away just minutes after the proper approvals were received. Another upperclassman drove her to Baltimore where she hopped on a train with only 30 seconds to spare. When she got a seat on the train, she reflected on the previous hour with a smile, saying, "Well that certainly was THE NAVY WAY!" We didn't know about this until we got a call saying, "I'm in NJ. That observation concerns the class with which the mids play and conduct themselves. As a person who follows college football closely and coached high school varsity football until 2 years ago, I really appreciate the way that the mids approach the game of football. They display sportsmanship and respect for the game as well as for their opponent. Unlike so many Div. 1 teams and players today, whenever a mid makes a play, you will never see him strut around afterwards, trash talk in the face of the opposing players, thump their chests, and do other such things so as to draw attention to themselves. Midshipmen play the game with enormous effort, pride, dignity and enthusiasm. It is such a pleasure to watch. The way they play football is a credit to the Academy, their coaches, and maybe most of all to you parents who raised them with the proper values and respect for others. I feel that it is a truly great honor to have a connection to them by being a fan. I am a plebe parent, Navy wife of 19 years, mother of 4 children, and English teacher. I have noticed the disintegration of our "polite" young men & women in the general public at times, and have been greatly impressed by our midshipmen & their politeness. While attending the BC game, my family and I were exposed to the rudest section of fans from our visiting team. I have season tickets on the gold side - as to watch the antics of the mids - No we do not sit directly across, and in the visiting section. The majority of the other side of the gold section is Navy, however, this particular day about 15 obnoxious male BC fans moved in the lower rows of section 30. After much cursing, yelling, & shouting obsentities to those around , Navy fans quietly moved back. Finally, the police had to come & evict them- since these were not their purchased seats. As they were leaving, they took it upon themselves to squirt ketchup packets all over my 7 year old daughter, who was sitting with her brother about 5 rows in front of me. Next thing I know - she's covered in ketchup & crying. She was more upset because these rude fans had ruined her new Navy t-shirt, and now she wouldn't be able to wear it to her big brother's games anymore. After the game, these same fans came back & made rude comments while Blue & Gold was being sung. Not one of the Navy alumni standing around us would lower himself & quit singing or be rude back. I was so proud to see that our Navy fans had so much class & poise. I'm sure that one day, someone will remember how well our fans behaved & I am forever full of hope that a lesson would be learned. Everyone should be proud of the poise & class that our mids have. By the way, after the game, we had a wonderful tailgate party with many of the plebes from 14th company. Again, the "Thank you Maams" were flowing freely. Even from my own son. WOW. Kudos to all you wonderful parents. My husband and I were at the Kent State game. At the end of the game, after the football teams had exchanged handshakes on the field, the Kent State band began playing its alma mater. The Navy team, as a unit and without instruction, turned to face the band and stood still for the entire playing of the song. The Navy D & B and the Navy fans likewise stood in the stands. In contrast, the Kent State cheerleaders and color guard were moving about oblivious to the music. The Kent State players, understandably dejected, continued strolling into their locker room. The Kent fans were totally unaffected by the music. It was interesting to watch the Kent State cheerleaders gradually realize the respect their school was being paid that they themselves did not demonstrate. By the end of their alma mater, every Kent State cheerleader was also standing at attention. It appeared to be an instructional moment for those young people. Perhaps the general public can learn to show respect when there are clear positive examples to follow. To: usna-net@navy-usna.org Content-Language: en X-MIME-Autoconverted: from quoted-printable to 8bit by westpoint.west-point.org id WAA08955 Oh, what a couple of days!!! What a wonderful and interesting experience……For me it started on Wednesday as I went down to Annapolis early to participate in the Parents Conference scheduled for Thursday the 16th .After I battened down the hatches at home….closing windows and making sure things were up and out of harms way in the basement, I hopped in the car and hit the road. The weather at this point was cloudy and heavy with anticipation of Floyd. But nothing was going to keep me from getting to Annapolis and my Mid! I arrived at the hotel and checked in…..freshened up and drove to meet my son at Dalghren for a bite to eat. The rain had started to fall, and the wind to blow, but not heavily, so the drive wasn't bad. Just the traffic!….I'm still wondering how the new circle on West St. is a help to traffic flow, so far…I just see that it has made it more difficult to traverse. Dalghren was a buzz with activity…..the TV's tuned to stations predicting the impending storm's arrival….the Mid's and a few of their parents gathered around the tables eating, hugging, and keeping an eye on the weather….By this time we had heard that classes had been canceled for Thursday….there were more than a few 'happy campers' at the Academy that night!!!! Peter and I made plans for the next day, and plans for the weekend, always realizing that as the weather changed, so would our plans….but I was so happy to see him, to give him a great big kiss and put my arms around him (I should say, have him put his arms around me….I feel as though I've shrunk …) By the time I got back to the hotel the weather was definitely making itself known……but it still wasn't too bad…I wondered if it truly would get worse, or just continue to be a bother….I met my two Conference co-horts at the hotel, and we decided that it was time to wander over to O'Briens to see if any other Netters had made it there. O'Briens is on the lower end of Main Street and pretty near City Dock……and the place was hopping……as we walked by the windows, and looked inside…. I noticed that the crowd was quite young ( a matter of perspective)…..I told the girls that we would have to search inside for some 'oldsters' who weren't obviously into the 'singles' scene…We wove our way through the crowd at the bar…..and found our way to the back of the bar….. there seated around a large table was a group that definitely had USNA ties… the ribbons told the story!!!…..We'd found them!!! Mike and Sandi were there, holding court with about four other couples…..We joined the group and soon had to expand as others started to arrive!!! What a group of talkers……it was so much fun to meet in person those names we have seen only on the Internet! We made new friends, solved problems, figured out policies and gossiped about our mids! Around midnight the group decided that it had solved enough of the world's problems for the day and broke up with a promise to meet the next night…. providing that City Dock wasn't under water due to Floyd! As we went to bed we checked the weather….they were calling for lots of rain and lots of wind…..for Floyd to visit with a vengeance…..we wondered if the Conference would come off at all……Thank goodness for the Internet…..We were able to check and confirm that the conference was still on!!! When I got up in the morning I looked out side……it didn't look too bad….until I stepped through the door…..the rain was coming down in sheets, blown across the land by the winds of a furious force…..they were somehow soft though….not hard and pelting.. just a lot of them….rain drops to soak the soul and clothes!…..We made it to the Conference on time……and were greeted by Elizabeth , some hot coffee and muffins…though there were quite a few people who dribbled into Alumni Hall but not nearly as many as in years past….I am sure that quite a few had been thwarted by the storm……no planes were landing anytime soon…….. Eventually we all entered the Conference….to find that because of our 'not so friendly' visitor the conference would be abbreviated….as it turned out……not only was it shorter but it was darker than planned……about an hour into the conference the lights flickered, wavered and then went out!!!! We continued to hear from some speakers…in quite an interesting manor……for ambient lighting we had a lap top computer on the podium….the screen saver of which cast a small light onto the speaker's face…and somehow, one hand held microphone that worked!!! There were a few emergency lights that twinkled in the ceiling high above…and even as the speakers spoke one could hear the dash of wind and rain high up in the rafters!!!! So much for the meeting!!! We were served a wonderful box lunch in the room that overlooks Hospital Point….We could watch the water washing over the road….and see the rain beating down all around….Kind of scary… By this time most of the lights on the Yard were out!!! The Mids in Bancroft were somehow coping with not having their computers or anything…..Peter was reluctant to venture out even though Firstie had liberty till 10pm. So I left him to his own devises and drove around the Yard before I headed back to the hotel. I wish my pictures had come out!!! I took a great picture of three very soaked Mids in their PE gear… I stopped them in front of Dalghren and asked if I could take their picture…with just a little hesitation they asked who I was…and I replied.."Don't worry, I'm just a MOM.. they gladly posed ….dirty, soaked and smiling!!! They were having fun…..and so were lots of Mids! I watched as a small touch football game was played out next to LeJuene Hall….Mud flying everywhere….rain soaking the players….laughter and excitement filling their lungs….as they created a giant mud patch ….which I suspect made it all the more fun…. For those who did not want to get muddied…..a large group of Mids had their own game going on the artificial turf…..It was as if someone had opened the doors to heaven…..it looked like SO much fun!!!! Because the dinner for the conference had been canceled several of us joined the Blue and Gold Officers Dinner which had been moved to the Wyndam…..good food, good company…..and as it turned out….a candle lit dinner (yep, the lights went out during the main course!)… The Barber Shop Quartet and the Skivs both came a regaled us with song!!! They were fantastic…and best of all both groups came up for bows at the end…..gathered together…and sang "The Navy Blue and Gold! Tears flowed from many who watched…..myself included…it is a haunting song! City Dock never did flood….the rain soon slowed down and after dinner we went back to O'Briens for more camaraderie and fun….unfortunately I got there just as the evening ended….but it was so good to see so many people with so much in common from all over…meeting and sharing ……much like this Net! By the time we went to bed the rain had stopped….and the wind had turned into a gentle breeze….the only sign of Floyd having visited were some downed wires, lots of darkness…..a few trees scattered on the ground and lots and lots of sirens going off…..The EMT's and Firemen were kept busy that night…On the way back to the hotel I had to take several detours… Friday morning dawned……bright and beautiful….with a cool breeze that brushed against my face……It was a fabulous day! I headed for Dalghren and registration for Firstie Parents Weekend… Unfortunately, my husband, who was to arrive about 9am did not make it till 3PM……he had to pump out the 4-5 inches of water from our basement and wait for someone to relight the water heater!!! So, I had to spend the morning without him… after a bite to eat I went to hear Adm. Ryan and VAdm. Roughhead welcome us to the Academy….they were interesting and warmly greeted us…Admiral Ryan said that the young men and women that the Academy is admitting are fabulous! He also said that '03 is incredible…..V.Adm. Roughead was quick to point out that one of the main reasons that'03 is so great is that they have the leadership of '00…..and that a lot of the credit goes to that class!!! After the welcome I met my Mid Peter outside of Dalghren Hall….we got a few minutes to talk before Noon Formation…and because he told me where to sit…Several of us had front-row seats to his Co.'s formation!!!! It was great… afterward, he gathered my ticket for King Hall and we went 'below' to fnd our table an places. Peter's company number is 25….So after the blessing we all took our seats and for those who have never seen King Hall filled with the glorious Mids…this is QUITE a sight…a sea of uniforms in all directions and a calcaphany of voices!..I may have seen the Mid with the towel….There was one a couple of tables away…..he stood there in his Formal Parade Uniform with a towel draped over his arm…I did not hear him greet anyone…but there was a lot of noise…after a couple of minutes someone made his a tri-corner hat out of newspaper!!! He looked so funny, but he kept a serious face….you could tell ,though, that he was having fun!!! Our table consisted of three Firsties, their Mids and two lowly, lonley Plebes!!! They stood at attention, spoke only when spoken to…except to get some food passes……and wanted out of their ASAP…. They asked to be excused, permission was not granted…they had some tasks to perform!!! First they each told a joke, then stood together and sang Happy Birthday to me as it was my birthday! And then to Peter's roommate's sister as Saturday would be hers!! All the tables around us listened and then clapped!! What a treat!!! Before one of the Plebes left he was asked to sing another song…an adaptation of a Jimmy Buffet song exchanging Chicken Tenders for the Cheeseburgers mentioned in the song…All of us were surprised when he asked permission to sing it 'Show Boat' style.. This was one kid who will definitely make it!!! He got into the spirit of the day, and jumped up from the table…..and did his song with arms extended….waving around… just as if he were on a Broadway stage…..this time LOTS of tables clapped…and he actually broke a quick smile…. He was excused with a hearty thank you from the Parents.. and comments from the Mids about how great it was (not to him though, just to the parents) After lunch was to be class visitation…Peter had only one class that had been canceled so instead he took me on a long, arduous and exhaustive tour of Mitchner and Chevreny(?) Halls…up and down stairs in the warren like halls …. I really got lost, he admitted that it had taken him two years to really figure it out… I saw the Machine shop, the banks and banks of computers!!! The boat testing tank….and so much more…what a treat!!!Soon, my husband arrived and we made plans to pick up Peter for dinner…Back to the hotel to freshen up….and then back to the Yard to get Peter…meanwhile, we had seen several of our new found friends and were pulled as to where and with whom we would have dinner…finally though, we decided to join Peter's roommate's parents and sister. Annapolis on this evening was jammed with everyone there for the weekend…and I am sure it was additionally swelled by those with no power, who had no other option than to let 'some one else cook'…..We had a wonderful dinner and the best part was the conversation…The parents we were with were funny, happy, and wonderful people…and the Mids regaled us with numerous stories from their distant Plebe year and summer!!! We practically rolled on the floor…As it turns out we didn't leave the restaurant until almost midnight! What a great Birthday dinner!! I even got to talk to my daughter in FtLaud. During it!……Saturday was once again a glorious day!! We met Peter for a quick breakfast and then went up to their room in Bancroft……I thought back at Plebe Parent's Weekend three years ago and realized that I had missed so much….I had been much like the Plebes themselves,….a deer in the headlights!!! This time, however, I soaked it all in….their rooms were neat…not as neat as during PPW but neat none the less…. They were, however, more personalized…..the ward room with it's banks of overstuffed chairs and couches…..like a theater waiting for the patrons to visit and watch a movie….and a little treat of coffee, juice and doughnuts…..much needed sustenance for the hiking we did that day!!! Peter took us down so many halls..up and down so many stairs…..I went dizzy with the directions…but somehow we managed to see it all…..the back way into Memorial Hall ( where a mid played incredible music on the baby grand -as much for himself as for us I am sure) into the Rotunda and beyond… The day flew by and by the time we finally were finished, the Mid store had closed…We hadn't made it there yet to 'drop our wad'…..that would have to wait till Sunday!… Soon it was time to head for the game….. Peter was an official helper for his Co.'s tailgate so we loaded his stereo into the truck and headed over to the stadium… while my husband helped Peter set up…I helped our Southeastern PA tailgate get organized… there are so many wonderful people from our area who show up to every game and make the whole process more enjoyable and easy. Then came the game… disappointing because of the loss but great to watch none the less…..and so around 3:30 the tailgates got under way in earnest!!! I floated between the tow… Once again for SPPA there were about 125 mids that came for hot dogs and burgers etc… Meanwhile, back at Co. 25's tailgate the party was just getting started..Once the SPPA tailgate had folded up I rejoined the group under the tent for the rest of the evening… and they partied on and on… I had a wonderful time talking to Kathy Mineart and Gingy Melanson….and their husbands….I felt as though I had found sould mates!!! And indeed I had…Peter and his roommate Lester took Lester's sister out for a night on the town…and the 'oldsters' opted for a quiet night at the hotel.. with grilled sandwiched from Giant and lots of rest.. Sunday… brighter if possible… and a relaxing day…..we went to services with Peter (the Chapel is so beautiful) I almost wanted to describe the service as full of pomp but that would be inaccurate…it was more like ceremony!!! The choir sang beautifully, it was so impressive to see the flags presented, the Mids march in and the whole congregation standing… it was emotional and fulfilling! All too soon, it was time for us to depart…Had to get back to Phila in time to get the dogs from the Kennel…I definately wouldn't have switched with even the wealthiest man in the world for my experience this weekend…..I'm sorry I was quite so wordy…but I couldn't resist!!! How long does it take, the best route, places to stay etc. We will (we think) be attending a drill competition to watch the Jolly Rogers (USNA's silent drill team). This may well apply to my situation, too. I don't receive ANY mailings or information from the USNA. Never have. I remember when our daughter was signing up that there was a place to designate a second address, but I think they also said that the USNA could only send info to one address and that it would be up to us to figure out how to share. For me, it would be much simpler and more effective if there was a way to receive mailings to two different parent addresses. If anyone else has seen this done, I'd be extremely interested to know how to set it up. Many thanks! Carolyn Spiros Boston, MA ---------- From: Vivian Day To: usna-plebe Subject: usna-plebe: Navy families Date: September 22, 1999 12:27 PM Dear all, I saw a wonderful segment on the "Today" show today. Katie talked with a pilot (and his wife and 3 children )who had been stationed aboard the carrier T. Roosevelt- which was just docking in Norfolk. It was so exciting to see all the sailors lined up around the perimeter of the deck waiting to get a glimpse of their loved ones. The pilot was (his name and rank escape me) spoke proudly of their involvement in the Balkan area but was quick to turn the spotlight away from himself and to the all the 5000? crew members aboard the TR. As Katie spoke to him and his family about what it is like to be a Navy family. His wife spoke of missing her husband and best friend and about how it was sometimes difficult raising children alone. She gave the appearance of being the perfect Navy wife. And now to the reason for this posting: Ever since my son has talked about making a career in the Navy, I have told him that the Navy is probably the most difficult branch on family relations, and that it takes 2 special people to carry off a successful Navy marriage...it takes a "Navy wife" . Jokingly but hoping sometime would stick, we would talk about characteristics that a Navy wife should have. For those of you out there, Navy wives and husbands, what tips could you give a young Mid/Officer looking for that person to share their Navy lives? Does the Academy or the Navy do any "marriage/ relationships" training. This may seem premature since my soon is a pleb and 4 yrs away from marriage, but the mate he chooses could very well determinehis military success or failure...and happiness. I have only 4 more years of brain washing so I must get busy. So, anyone want to talk about what it takes to be a good Navy wife, a good Navy husband and father. The list activity seems to have decreased in the past few days - so maybe it is a good time to talk about "finding a Navy wife of my son" - the quest continues! ps...please do not let my son John know I sent this! PLease! I have one other unrelated question: A parent told me that it was optional whether our Mid's grades would be sent home- the Mids had the option. Is this true? When do the mids take portraits? I remember last year my plebe took a portrait right around September. In fact, he said that they HAD to take the portrait. I also remember that we received a postcard from the photography studio informing us that portraits were being taken and encouraging us to remind our mids to take his/ her picture. Of course, I encouraged my reluctant plebe to take a picture, and as a result we got a nice portrait. So do they take these portraits every year? Will we receive notice again from the studio? I don't want to miss the opportunity for this year's portrait. My son is usually reluctant to take pictures, so he usually needs some persuasion from the homefront. Any information on this matter would be appreciated. Thanks a lot. Only Plebes and Firsties have mandatory pix taken. The Firsties Lucky Bag (yearbook) pictures are to be taken shortly. However, your 2/c or 3/c can request to have pictures taken at the convenience of the photographer and the "official" sitting schedule. All companies end up having their pictures taken for the Lucky Bag. This would seem an optimal time to also have individually requested pix to be taken, since they're already in the uniform of choice. I beleive that there is also the opportunity to have their individual pictures taken in other "approved" dress uniforms... although this option may have changed. Her grandparents gave her one from Sam's Club - she can just call the # on the card, and add time to it with her credit card. I believe the Post Office can be done over the phone, too. Their rates may not be the cheapest, but as a Plebe, the convenience is most important. Another idea - gift certificates for Einstein's Bagels - there is one at City Dock. I got Megan several $5.00 ones as a stocking stuffer. There aren't a lot of stores close enough for easy shopping - even if they could buy anything that they could use. :-) One time last year, someone said that food and time are about the only things Plebes could use. They claim, YES. How many?? As many as they get requests for, both upper and lower level, at $110 each (two years ago this same agency sold upper level tickets for $150). I asked how on earth they manage to get the tickets, and was told that they get them from brokers. The tickets the brokers don't sell must account for the empty seats at "sellout" games and concerts (there are usually far too many empty seats to be "no shows", right?); but if they only sell one in three (and odds are they will sell more, depending on the event), they are more than breaking even. This works this way at all large public events. Hundreds of people you see waiting in Ticketron lines are only there to buy and resell the tickets for an event without any intention of actually going to the event. Others use the profit from the max number purchase to fund the cost of a pair of tickets that they would have purchased anyway. If they have to wait in line all night, why not get their tickets free or at least at substantially reduced prices. This being our firstie year, we went all out with football tickets. We bought season tickets, special Air Force tickets, and have a large group of family and friends coming to the Army Navy game!! Unfortunately, we have to miss the second most exciting game of the year; the Air Force game. We have three club seats and a VIP parking pass for the game. These are upgraded tickets and the best seats in the house (according to the ticket office.) The special parking pass provides a space right next to the stadium (the best place to tail-gate.) We're very dissappointed to have to miss the Air Force game and it would be a shame to waste these great seats. We're hoping that some mid parents will want them. References: <37EB863C.E1F706@cs.montana.edu> Well, I don't have NAVY experiences, but both my husband and I were career AF. I spent 21 years in and retired in 97 and my husband retired in 98. Having two active duty people married in the service presented some unique challenges. We had to have a dependent care plan in place at all times and documented just in case we BOTH had to deploy at the same time, for example. We had two children, and they were both pretty resilient. I do not think it adversely affected them, but broadened their cultural awareness After we retired and became more immersed in the 'civilian' community, my son, (our daughter was already grown with her own family), commented he found it difficult to relate to some of the kids in his school who had never been out of TX, or some even the metroplex area. He found their conversations and concerns very self centered and superficial. He also observed most of the kids in his high school.... which was a magnet high school, had no CLUE what they would do with their lives in the future, including what college they would attend. (And this was 2d semester of Sr year) As for 'husbands' ... my first husband was a civilian, and we were married for 3 years of my military career. He found it very difficult to deal with the idea that my duty obligations came firs. He could never seem to understand that if I was on a deployment, I had no choice but to GO on that deployment. Of course he had other personal issues going on that made it difficult for him to be supportive. However, I suspect having a civilian spouse (male) would be uniquely challenging unless he is incredibly secure and mature. This might not be new to some of you, but I thought it was interesting. "This year's plebes scored better on their end-of-summer physical readiness test than any recent class, with a failure rate of 6.5 percent on the pull-ups, sit-ups and running. One in 10 members of the Class of 2002 failed the test last summer, and one in six members of the Class of 2001 failed the test two years ago. The Class of 2003 also had one of the lowest dropout rates in recent years. Of 1,232 freshmen inducted July 1, 6.6 percent dropped out before September. Last year, 7 percent dropped out, and two years ago, 7.4 percent left. The new freshmen also are better marksmen than their predecessors, with 97 percent of the class qualifying as marksmen. And they arrived in Annapolis with some of the highest high school scores ever, having averaged well over 1300 on their SATs. One in 10 was a high school student body president, and 88 percent were varsity athletes." I found this information under the quick search by typing in "Naval Academy". Someone get there early and get a good spot....bring a brightly colored red/white/blue helium balloon...fly it high and have everyone watch for where "Party Central" is...... Wish we could join you...
