I was sent this information recently that I thought I might share with you. In 1989, the John Templeton Foundation established the Honor Roll for Character-Building Colleges to recognize biennially those institutions that emphasize character development as an integral aspect of the undergraduate experience. http://www.collegeandcharacter.org/ It comes as no surprise to me that all four of the Service Academies are included in this honor role. The Naval Academy has been included in the following areas: First Year Programs: Exemplary first-year programs offer students the tools to develop a moral compass by which to navigate between their increased personal freedom and their new responsibilities. Academic Honesty Programs: Academic honesty (or integrity) is the fundamental understanding that a person of character does not lie, steal, or cheat, especially in relationship to academic work. Student Leadership Programs: Almost all colleges and universities aspire to prepare students for positions of leadership both inside and outside the campus community. A growing number of college programs are dedicated to providing high-quality educational experiences for students to develop the competencies, conscience, and compassion required of leaders in a civil society. I am doing a little tidying up and wanted to share a few random but important things. Since traffic is slow I though I'd take the time to write today. USNA-Sports - If you haven't signed up yet, why not? Please just send an email to ME at mzets@mail.com with the words "subscribe - USNA-Sports" in the body of the message. Nothing else is necessary. No Messages - The lists have been slow for the past few days. Nothing is wrong with the system. People just have run out of things to talk about. This too shall pass. Quoting Original Messages - Please, please DO NOT leave your email program set to "Quote the Original Message in your Reply." This causes a whole lot of extra text to be transmitted with your reply. In my original message about signing up for USNA-Sports, I asked that you just hit the reply button with the words "subscribe - USNA-Sports" in the text. Of the over 150 responses to this request, I received more than half of them with the entire announcement message attached to those three simple words. In messages to our Lists, this is especially bad since I really clogs up our archives and slows the Listserver WAY DOWN when it has to send all that extra text to all 700+ members of USNA-Net. Set your email program to NOT quote the original message and we'll be a lot faster in getting and storing email. If you don't know how, ask me. Send me a note with the name of your email program and I'll get you detailed instructions on how to set this feature properly. Change of Email Address - If your email address changes, let Sandi or me know in a private message. Include your Name, Old Address and New Address. Don't send this notice to our Lists! We make the changes the same day as we receive the notification. DO NOT resubmit an application for membership under the New Address. It really confuses things because we think this is a new application and go through a lot of extra stuff that isn't needed for a simple change of address. Since you're already a member, we don't need to process a new subscription request, etc. Attachments and Viruses - Just a reminder that computer viruses are transmitted via attachments to email. If you receive an attachment to an email, DON'T OPEN IT! Even if it's from someone you know. In the past few weeks I, personally, received TWO messages with the HAPPY99.EXE virus attached. Thankfully, they were not sent to the Net. HAPPY99.EXE is a cute little program that, when opened, shoots up New Years Eve Fireworks and the proceeds to attach itself to every email you send to anyone. And all without your knowledge. For more info on Happy99 see our website's FAQ page under "Viruses." You'll even find detailed instruction on how to fix your system if your infected. That's about it for now. Questions? RE: <<< Is EVERYTHING forbidden [on the other lists] when it comes to sports? >>> First, the simple answer is YES. Everything related to sports is to be put on USNA-Sports except for 1. Ticket exchanges (Need tickets or have excess tickets) and 2. Requests for directions/accommodations related to an event (and the appropriate responses). The reason for these exceptions is that I felt removing these two items from the main list would hurt more than help the individual with the question if the member was forced to ask the smaller group. Now for the longer explanation... A couple of others have expressed the same sentiment about the creation of the new USNA-Sports Listserver. So here is the way it went down. I had received many, many complaints from members that the sports related postings to USNA-Net and USNA-Plebe were diluting the Mission of the lists. While I agreed to a certain extent with this view, the sports stuff was, and still is, an important part of Navy Parenting, at least to a large number of our members. So I could not just arbitrarily banish these topics from discussion by parents. Instead, I went to the WP.ORG administrators and requested a NEW list be created on their servers for our members to use for sports related discussions. They very graciously agreed that a new list would be appropriate. (Remember, all of this happens because a West Point Grad has provided these services for free to us on his computers in Austin, TX.) I thought (how silly of me to assume) that we would just split the discussions along a Sports / non-Sports line. This way those members that could care less about the score in an obscure game on Tuesday night wouldn't be bothered and those of you that live and die for a single point could expound to even greater lengths about your favorite non-varsity activity. What could be more simple, I thought. Sports enthusiasts on one list having a great time talking about everything sports and, in the other corner of the world, the non-sports types being pleased as punch to not have to hear all that stuff about tailgating and light weight crew and LaCrosse and on and on. Ah, but the world isn't that perfect. It isn't that black and white. We have "cross dressers" out there that want Tailgating but not LaCrosse scores. We have members that want to talk about how great it was to be at the game but don't want to hear about the game itself. We have people that don't know if the D&B's performance at a "football" game is sports related or not. We have every flavor of "half-way" that you can imagine. My response to those that want it all is that you can't have your cake and eat it too. I stick by my original ruling that if it deals with a Sport it belongs on USNA-Sports. If you want to talk about Tailgating, join USNA-Sports and put up with the LaCrosse scores. (Please, I don't mean to offend the LaCrosse Parents out there. I'm just using that as an example.) Since less than a third of our members have signed up for USNA-Sports (210, so far), I imagine that the other 500 or so of you think that USNA-Sports is not your thing. It would have been far easier to have added everyone all at once to USNA-Sports and then tell those that didn't want it to unsubscribe but I thought that that approach would have inconvenienced too many members. I guess that I was correct in that approach since I would have had to dealt with 500 unsubscribes versus 200 subscriptions. So in summary, think of this as the local daily paper. If the topic is Academic Achievements of a football player, it goes on the front page. If it deals with D&B at a game, it's about Music not sports and goes in the first section. If it deals with tailgating or flag football or box scores, it goes in the sports section. Many of you still read the sports section because you're interested in hockey. At certain times of the year you have to wade through all the football or basketball news to get the results of the game between the Leafs and Bruins. You don't write to the editor of the paper and complain. You don't cancel your subscription to the paper. You just ignore the stuff that doesn't interest you. Sometimes, you don't even read the sports section but you still buy the paper. If you want to hear about anything related to USNA Sports subscribe to USNA-Sports. If not, enjoy the peace and quiet of the other lists. I think that makes it pretty clear. Thanks for listening. The letter is from us, with a pre-addressed envelope, postage, and card to the family of the young man who is deceased. We also included the obituary article and the funeral service program which had several nice pictures of the young man. Since they were not extremely close friends, we did not need to get this information to our son right away as he would not even have considered coming home to Reno for the services. The mailin service route I used was UPS for price and addressed them to the Bancroft Express Office. (BTW your mids can reach this office). I found I could mail equipment bag & sticks for less than I thought. But what I didn't know was that I couldn't mail the sticks unboxed. I had boxed the bag. Luckily UPS had boxes. So for all you families who are mailing hockey equipment for their daughters, I encourage you to box everything for easier handling. I found the grocery store to be helpful and sporting goods for a stick carton, that's how they are shipped to them. Well thanks again to all the helpful Navy Family members out there. Jensin W. Sommer, Bureau of Medicine and Surgery "The Navy's Bureau of Medicine and Surgery has released new corneal refractive surgery standards and waiver policies for the undersea/diving/special warfare, surface and air warfare communities. The Sept 29 administrative message is the first comprehensive policy concerning corneal refractive surgery to correct visual acuity worse than 20/20. Refractive surgery is designed to reduce or eliminate the need for glasses or contact lenses.... Under the new policy, all forms of refractive surgery are still considered disqualifying for new accessions into the Navy or Marine Corps. But this can be waived if specific criteria are met. For applicants wanting warfare communities, PRK (photorefractive keratectomy) is the only form of refractive surgery that will be considered for a waiver at this time. The new policy strongly impacts aviation communities. Navy and Marine aviators will now join submariners and surface warfare officers in being able to obtain a waiver for PRK surgery, although it will be on a limited basis initially. Aviators who meet the eligibility criteria for PRK surgery may elect to have the procedure if they are accepted into a Navy-sponsored clinical study, and are granted prior permission from their commanding officers... More information about the physical standards and waiver policies can be found at: http://navymedicine.med.navy.mil/ Under "Links," click on "Corrective Eye Surgery Information." EDITOR'S NOTE: Regarding the brigade, "anyone interested in aviation can only have the surgery if they are part of the study," said Lt. Comdr.. Amir Wolfe, of the clinic here. "Midshipmen considering this surgery must get approval from the senior medical officer, Capt. Robert Schultz. The Brigade will be informed if and when the study is officially opened. Right now, the particulars are being worked out." *** USNA-NET post by: STOKER Michael 00-10 ZETS Sandi (Stoker) Have you subscribed to USNA-Sports yet? She has a ganglion cyst on her left hand/wrist that started in Plebe Summer and is getting worse, but today was the first I've heard about it:-( Navy doctors are recommending surgery. We have a wonderful hand surgeon here on our medical plan that we have experience with (chief of hand surgery at Baylor Med School). She does not want to wait till Christmas (PRTs right after break are more important to her.) Our family rule - OK - MY rule is no one goes to the hospital alone. If you have to have an IV, you need to have someone there who can be your advocate. Besides, they don't make you sign those releases just for fun. I would much rather be there 10 time when I wasn't needed than miss the 1 time when I should have been there. So has anyone out there lived through this before as a parent? Just how involved will the Navy let me be? Are there options we should know about or can ask for? How many questions can I ask about doctor's qualifications, experience and success rates without causing trouble for my daughter? I know she is 18 (just barely!) and in the Navy, but I have been her mother a very long time and have been there before when minor things turn major in the blink of an eye. I WILL be in Annapolis whether they let me be with her or not! He was transferred to Bethesda Naval Hospital 4 days after the initial surgery to continue the recovery process because the appendix was perforated. My husband, David, went to Annapolis the day after the surgery to be with Chris and stayed 2 weeks. He was very impressed with the doctors and staff at BNH! He said except for one nurse, every nurse, orderly and doctor were well studied on Chris' case before he got there. A team of 3 or so doctors made decisions about the treatment, they worked around the clock, constantly evaluating progress instead of once or twice a day. David responded to another net member's questions about BNH. His comments as follows. "The staff at the surgery floor were very cooperative with me. The"official" visiting hours were something like 6pm to 8:30. I stayed many times from 8am to midnight. I could not stay in the room with Chris all night because he had a double room and a roommate. Rumor was that if there had not been a roommate I "may" have been allowed to stay all night. All rooms on the surgery wing were doubles. There were two chairs for visitors to sit in the patients' room. There are also two lounge rooms with couches, lazy-boy chairs, tables, TV, puzzles, books, etc. There are snack machines everywhere, Subway shop, small Coffee bar, and a large lunch cafeteria on the first floor inside the hospital. There is a large McDonald's (late hours ~ 11pm) and gasoline station inside the hospital complex. They are a small walk outside the front door. "They were very easy on the rules for parents. Doctors explained, talked, joked, taught, etc., quite a bit. Late hours and most of the weekend all doors but the front door are locked, but I never had any problems going in or out with the security officers there. "Chris was there three weeks. I only stayed two. His Sponsor took him in her car back to her house for a Saturday afternoon leave and then back to Bancroft that evening to report back. So basically he went directly back to Bancroft. The trips to Ann Arundle and to the National Naval Hospital were in the academy ambulance." Hope this helps. David Denton Paula, I also had a ganglion cyst on my left hand near the wrist below the "V" between the thumb and first finger at the age of 20 when in Dental Hygiene School at Baylor. I did nothing but pray for it. It shrank away and I have never had any follow up done on it. Maybe it was not a GC, but the doctors said it was and that the only way to fix it was to surgically remove it. I'd been using my left hand in technical positions it was unused to. Perhaps your daughter's is caused by physical irritation as well....right handed push-ups in order? I will pray for her situation. Best wishes for her recovery! I have been so angry for the past few days that I did not send this message until I had a chance to compose my thoughts. After two days, I am still angry at the stupidity and carelessness of a few of our members. For the second time in as many months and the third time since I became Moderator, a serious breach of a Midshipman's Privacy has occurred as a direct result of one or more of our members forwarding an email that they received via our Net to his/her Midshipman at the Yard. Unlike the original situations, this time, serious damage has occurred to the Midshipman mentioned in the email that was forwarded (intact) in direct and deliberate violation of our Rules of Operation. I have been asked by the parents of this Mid to keep the details of the incident private and have therefore removed all references to the Midshipman from this message. It is sufficient to say that an email that mentioned their Midshipman by name was sent to another Midshipman at the Yard by a member(s) of our Net. The message mentioned something that had happened to the Midshipman and when this news was forwarded to the Yard, the Midshipman that was mentioned received serious grief from other Mids which added to the Mid's already stressful situation. I have this to say to any member who forwards a message that they receive from our Net to a Mid at the Yard... HOW DARE YOU ENDANGER ANOTHER MIDSHIPMAN'S WELL BEING ??? The forwarding of any message to the Yard is STRICTLY forbidden in our Rules of Operation for this very reason. This careless and deliberate act is unconscionable. The parent who sent the original message did so to share experience, advice and council with other members. For a recipient of this message to then send it to the Yard without removing the name of the family and the Mid is the height of laziness and shows total disregard for the welfare of this fine, young Midshipman. No member is above the rules. They apply to each and every one of you. It's perfectly OK to mention something to your Mid in conversation or email which you learned on our Net. What isn't OK is to forward a message with all its DETAILS so that your Mid knows who, what, when and where and can use that information against another Midshipman or spread the news (perhaps even casually) to others who will. You can NEVER be sure what will be passed on to another once the information has gone to the Yard. This time it really hurt. THINK, PEOPLE !!! This Net is for "your" benefit as a parent. We are here to support one another and then indirectly to help our sons or daughters. Every time you share something that you hear on our Net with an "outsider," - be it a Mid or any non-member, you degrade our Mission and hurt us all. But most of all, even a casual or well intended slip can violate a Mid's Privacy and bring harm to someone's son or daughter, maybe yours. Just think how you would feel if the harm had come to YOUR Mid. I will not discuss this matter (either publicly or privately) with anyone, so don't write asking if it was "this" or "that." If YOU have forwarded a posting to your Mid in the past few weeks, assume that it was your careless and thoughtless action that caused the damage. Resolve to NOT do it again. And then keep your promise to the rest of our members, that rely on all of us to act in the best interest of the group, by reading and abiding by all of the rules. They are ALL there for a reason. It is NOT required by the airlines to travel in military uniform. FYI You might want to encourage your Mid to travel with carry-on luggage only, whenever possible. The airlines also suspect military-looking gear and luggage and have the right to break locks on seabags etc, and often delay its arrival. Last summer, my son, returning from an assignment and traveling in uniform, was shocked that his gear was delayed and its whereabouts was unknown. His seabag's lock was broken off; and the seabag clearly identified was searched, and poorly resecured. We as parents, friends, sons & daughters, owe you a lot! Be sure to thank your Mids! Why is Veterans Day (Once Armistice Day) Today?: World War I ended on this day in 1918 with the signing of the Armistice. November 11, 1918 World War I ended when Germany, bereft of manpower, supplies and food, signed an armistice agreement. The war's tolls were at least 10 million dead, 6 million of them civilians, and 21 million wounded. One of the points of contention of the armistice, from the US side, was that it allowed Germany to surrender without accepting defeat. And on this day in 1921, President Harding dedicated the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery. November 11, 1982 Paying homage to US soldiers who served in the Vietnam War, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial was dedicated in Washington, D.C. Designed by 21-year old Maya Ying Lin, the long-awaited memorial is a simple black granite wall, inscribed with the names of over 58,000 Americans who died in the conflict. Initially opposed by many veterans' groups, public opinion shifted as people began walking along the black reflective wall and realizing the almost sacred nature of the memorial. The wall brought together those who fought and those who marched against the war: http://www.nps.gov/vive/index2.htm Born on this day: General George "Blood and Guts" Patton was born on this day in 1885. Patton commanded the Third Army in the liberation of Paris during World War Two. Be sure to see the World War II Memorial. It site across the Severn overlooking the US Naval Academy!! Please allow me to bore you all with the details of our List Structure one more time. It's necessary since some of you don't know or have forgotten how we are set up. Please DO NOT send the same message to more than one list, EVER. Here's why... EVERYONE belongs to USNA-Net. SOME of those belong to nothing else. MOST of those USNA-Net members ALSO belong to USNA-Plebe and/or USNA-Sports and/or USNA-ClubNet. SOME belong to all four. So sending one message to USNA-Net gets it to everyone, guaranteed. USNA-Net is the Master List USNA-Plebe, USNA-Sports and USNA-Clubnet are all sub-lists of USNA-Net. Sort of subcommittees with more specialized interests. So if your message pertains to USNA-Sports send it to that list only. Likewise, Plebe stuff or the chattier news or discussions belong on Plebe. But please, don't send the same message to more than one list in an effort to "get it to everyone." If you want to send your posting to everyone, just send it ONCE, to USNA-Net. It's really that simple. Sending the same email to more than one list just clogs up our system and fills our archives with extra stuff that doesn't need to be there. I'm also forced to send gentle reminders to each of you that do that and there I go again being the Net Police. It's not a job I like and if you will all just give your "addressing" a little more thought BEFORE you hit the send button, you will make me one happy Moderator with far less email to send and more free time to be spent on improving our website and information base in the Parents Handbook, etc. Don't mean to harp on the same subject all the time but a guy's gotta do what a guy's gotta do until each and every one of our members understands how this danged thing works. To: "" Charlie Sykes had a special tribute to vets on this mornings program. Here it is in full context. Daddy, What is a Vet? Some veterans bear visible signs of their service: a missing limb, a jagged scar, a certain look in the eye. Others may carry the evidence inside them: a pin holding a bone together, a piece of shrapnel in the leg or perhaps another sort of inner steel: the soul's alloy forged in the refinery of adversity. Except in parades, however, the men and women who have kept America safe wear no badge or emblem. You can't tell a vet just by looking. What is a vet? He is the cop on the beat who spent six months in Saudi Arabia sweating two gallons a day making sure the armored personnel carriers didn't run out of fuel. He is the barroom loudmouth, dumber than five wooden planks, whose overgrown frat-boy behavior is outweighed a hundred times in the cosmic scales by four hours of exquisite bravery near the 38th parallel. She is the nurse who fought against futility and went to sleep sobbing every night for two solid years in Da Nang. He is the POW who went away one person and came back another -- or didn't come back at all. He is the Quantico Drill instructor who has never seen combat but has saved countless lives by turning slouchy, no-account rednecks and gang members into Marines. Teaching them to watch each other's backs. He is the parade-riding Legionnaire who pins on his ribbons and medals with a prosthetic hand. He is the career quartermaster who watches the ribbons and medals pass him by. He is any of the three anonymous heroes in The Tomb of the Unknowns. whose presence at the Arlington National Cemetery must forever preserve the memory of all the anonymous heroes whose valor dies unrecognized with them on the battlefield or in the ocean's sunless deep. He is the old guy bagging groceries at the supermarket-palsied now and aggravatingly slow-who helped liberate a Nazi death camp and who wishes all day long that his wife were still alive to hold him when the nightmare comes. He is an ordinary and yet an extraordinary human being - a person who offered some of life's most vital years in the service of his country and who sacrificed his ambitions so others would not have to sacrifice theirs. He is a soldier and a savior and a sword against the darkness and he is nothing more than the finest, greatest testimony on behalf of the finest, greatest nation ever known. So remember, each time you see someone who has served our country, just lean over and say "Thank You". That's all most people need and in most cases it will mean more than any medals they could have been awarded . . . or were awarded. Two little words that mean a lot, "THANK YOU." Remember November 11th is Veterans Day. "It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the poet, who has give us freedom of speech. It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who has given us the freedom to demonstrate. It is the soldier, who salutes the flag, who serves beneath the flag. And whose coffin draped by the flag, who allows the protestor to burn the flag." Father Dennis Edward O'Brien, USMC Stopping at the local pub tonight after work, I asked out loud to the dozen people if anyone was a vet. One said yes out of all of them. All I said to him was thank you. He proceeded to tell all of us about his experiences in the Air Force and what it meant to him. I also thought about what it meant to me. Our sons and daughters will be vets. Let us honor and respect them as human beings first, protectors of our country second and lastly as our kids. They have chosen their life's ambitions. And of the vets that served in the previous wars and conflicts and looking towards the new Millennium, let us all hope and pray that they will only have to protect our country and not have to fight for our country as the vets in the past have had to. Thank you, Vets. You are what this country is all about. Be proud-stand tall-be strong -you are what this country is built on and I am proud to be American because of what you have done for us. I really enjoyed hearing about it, hope you all will too! On Veteran's day, one sponsor who happens to be an elementary school teacher, picked up 6 Youngsters and took them to her school. There they went to separate classes and read a children's book about the VietNam wall to the students. The teacher told me she can never make it through reading this book aloud without the tears starting. The Mids did a terrific job, and the students "went nuts", according to the Mids. Each Mid had to sign many autographs, and each had a small taste of hero worship. They felt it was as inspiring and stimulating for them as it was for the children. Before returning to the yard, they were treated to dinner out with the Sponsor. What great opportunities they enjoy, with many more to follow. Last year the BIG 21st ONE I sent her a full sheet cake ("POOH CAKE her favorite Disney character, you should see her room )and she loved that because she celebrated with everybody. She took alot of pictures so I got to see everything and it looked like she was having a great time. The company drops the food off at the Main Office and they send a message to your mid and they can pick it up when they have time.In the three years going on four Ive never had a problem and have always been happy with the results. This is in response to questions about cheap air fares and military fares from Annapolis. I am travel agent, who had a daughter in the Class of '98 - I am currently taking some time off and NOT working, but I would be happy to give some tips to anyone who E-Mails me. First of all, our agency did not pay commission to any agents - all salaried, but we took great pride and joy in getting the lowest price for the Mids. We did everything from Spring Break, European jaunts, leave and honeymoons. In response to some of the questions: Military fares are usually only used when flight has to occur at the last minute - emergency, change of schedule, etc. Otherwise they are NO bargain. Your best rates are usually 2 weeks advanced-notice or in some cases (to the west coast) 3 weeks-advanced notice. For almost everyone, flying out of BWI (Baltimore) is cheaper and quicker. If I have a choice, I use Southwest (NO, I don't own stock in the company or have any connection to them - we just live near one of their hubs!) They usually have the most competitive fares, but even if another airline matches their fare you should consider that S.W. will NOT charge a change fee if you need to change your ticket. All other domestic carriers charge $75/ticket to change. Of course, if the fare goes up from the time you purchased it and the time you change it - you will have to pay the difference, but no penalty of $75 on Southwest. In all cases the major airlines have web sites that you can join and they will send you notice of their sales - Internet airline prices are often lower than the same ticket through a travel agent, airport or even directly through the airline. Most airlines are encouraging travelers to book their own flights at home on their computers and don't offer these special fares to other outlets. Sign on to several airline pages that have your town as a hub. Most important - if at all possible do an electronic ticket. Once you have the locator number you can send it to your Mid by phone, fax or E-Mail and they don't need a ticket and have nothing to lose. They also seem to be easier to change at the airport. Many times my daughter flew out of BWI with just a number written on her hand and her I.D!!! If I can answer any individual questions, I'd be happy to. Once again, I am not currently working and receive no financial benefit from this other than knowing that we can get a Mid home to his or her family for a reasonable fare (or to CanCun, if that is the order of the day!!!)
