Ryan announcing with deepest regrets the unfortunate death of one of their classmates. I have had several inquiries about the appropriateness of making a similar announcement over our Net. To each of those that took the time to inquire, I have pretty much said the same thing... Please do not post any messages about this subject. As untimely and unthinkable as this Midshipman's death may be, we MUST respect the privacy of the family involved. Our network is dedicated to "helping" our fellow parents. There are times when an open discussion or even a mentioning of certain subjects (even among the most caring of individuals) can do little to help and could even add to the heartache and grief that these parents are undergoing at this time. I feel that this is one of those times. If you have questions about the Midshipman, please contact your Mid directly. They have been given all of the details relevant to what happened. Sandi and I both feel that it should not be discussed on USNA-Net. We have always felt that our most important rule is the rule of Midshipman Privacy. In the case of a serious illness, injury, or death - it is paramount that the privacy of the Midshipman and his/her family be respected. We do not want the Lists to become a News Flash Service. I know that we each feel an attachment to all of the Mids at the Academy and the death of a Midshipman is acutely felt by all of us, but this is a very personal issue and should not be made into a news story. It is simply inappropriate and will help no one. Those parents on our List who might have known this young man, or whose Midshipman might have been friends with him - will be told by their own son or daughter about the tragedy. Those who did not know, need not be informed, unless their own Mid decides that they wish to share the information. This may sound callous. It is not meant to be. This should be left to those who knew and loved him - not be made into just another posting to our Lists. I ask each of you to please try to understand and honor our Rules in this matter. It has been suggested that it would be nice to get USNA-Net members together at the A/N game. I whole heartedly agree. Having gotten the "Skinny" from a few members that have attended previous games, it would appear that the best time to gather would be after the final gun, while the parking lot empties. Since the Firsties have to be at the stadium at 0800 for a photo session and the official march on occurs at 0930, getting together before the game doesn't seem like a good idea. If the Pres or VP decide to show up, the stadium will be virtually locked down for security purposes both before and during the game. Very little "wandering about" will be permitted, even by the Mids. Getting together in the stands between march on and kickoff will be next to impossible since I know for fact that we have parents seated from section 700 down to 250 where Sandi and I will be (Section 250, Row 8, Seats 8 & 9). Plus there will be too much happening on the field and the Jumbotron to want to miss any of that action. Our best bet (after consulting with our Mid) is to meet after the game. I suggest meeting just outside Gate "D." I am told this will be the gate that most of the Mids will be using due to their seat location and it is close enough for the rest of us that it shouldn't be a major inconvenience. A word of advise, try to park on that side of the field. So... Sandi and I will be outside Gate "D" after the final gun with our ribbons on waiting for you. See you there. Though I speak through the mist of 200 plus years, my shout for freedom will echo through liberty's halls for many centuries to come. Hear me speak, for my words are the truth and justice, and the rights of man. For those ideals I have spilled my blood upon the world's troubled waters. Listen well, for my time is eternal-yours is but a moment. I am the spirit of heroes past and future. I am the American Sailor. I was born upon the icy shores at Plymouth, rocked upon the waves of the Atlantic, and nursed in the wilderness of Virginia. I cut my teeth on New England codfish, and I was clothed in southern cotton. I built muscle at the halyards of New Bedford whalers, and I gained my sea legs high atop mizzen of Yankee clipper ships. Yes, I am the American Sailor, one of the greatest seamen the world has ever know. The sea is my home and my words are tempered by the sound of paddle wheels on the Mississippi and the song of whales off Greenland's barren shore. My eyes have grown dim from the glare of sunrise on blue water, and my heart is full of star-strewn nights under the Southern Cross. My hands are raw from winter storms while sailing down round the Horn, and the are blistered from the heart of cannon broadside while defending our nation. I am the American Sailor, and I have seen the sunset of a thousand distance, lonely lands. I am the American Sailor. It was I stood tall beside John Paul Jones as he shouted, "I have not yet begun to fight!" I fought upon the Lake Erie with Perry, and I rode with Stephen Decatur into Tripoli harbor to burn Philadelphia. I met Guerriere aboard Constitution, and I was lashed to the mast with Admiral Farragut at Mobile Bay. I have heard the clang of Confederate shot against the sides of Monitor. It was I suffered the cold with Peary at the North Pole, and I responded when Dewy said, "You may fire when ready Gridley." at Manila Bay. It was I who transported supplies through submarine infested waters when our soldier's were called "over there." I was there as Admiral Byrd crossed the South Pole. It was I who went down with the Arizona at Pearl Harbor, who supported our troops at Inchon, and patrolled dark deadly waters of the Mekong Delta. I am the American Sailor and I wear many faces. I am a pilot soaring across God's blue canopy and I am a Seabee atop a dusty bulldozer in the South Pacific. I am a corpsman nursing the wounded in the jungle, and I am a torpedoman in the Nautilus deep beneath the North Pole. I am hard and I am strong. But it was my eyes that filled with tears when my brother went down with the Thresher, and it was my heart that rejoiced when Commander Shepherd rocketed into orbit above the earth. It was I who languished in a Viet Cong prison camp, and it was I who walked upon the moon. It was I who saved the Stark and the Samuel B. Roberts in the mine infested waters of the Persian Gulf. It was I who pulled my brothers from the smoke filled compartments of the Bonefish and wept when my shipmates died on the Iowa and White Plains. When called again, I was there, on the tip of the spear for Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. I am the American Sailor. I am woman, I am man, I am white and black, yellow red and brown. I am Jew, Muslim, Christian and Buddhist. I am Irish, Filipino, African, French, Chinese and Indian. And my standard is the outstretched hand of Liberty. Today, I serve around the world, on land, in air, on and under the sea. I serve proudly, at peace once again, but with the fervent prayer that I need not be called again. Tell your children of me. Tell them of my sacrifice, and how my spirit soars above their country. I have spread the mantle of my nation over the ocean, and I will guard her forever. I am her heritage and yours. I am the American Sailor. One sat in the window seat, the other sat in the middle seat. Just before take-off, a Midshipman got on and took the aisle seat next to the two Woops. The Midshipman kicked off his shoes, wiggled his toes and was settling in when the Woop in the window seat said, "I think I'll get up and get a Coke." "No problem," said the Mid. "I'll get it for you." While he was gone, the Cadet picked up the Mid's shoe and spit in it. When the Mid returned with the coke, the other Cadet said, "That looks good, I think I'll have one, too." Again, the Mid obligingly went to fetch it and while he was gone, the Cadet picked up the other shoe and spit in it. The Midshipman returned and they all sat back and enjoyed the long flight to Philadelphia. As the plane was landing, the Mid slipped his feet into his shoes and knew immediately what had happened. "How long must this go on?" the Middie asked. "This fighting between our services? Bitter rivalry among our academies? This hatred? This animosity? This spitting in shoes and peeing in cokes?" To: usna-net@navy-usna.org Hi All! I spent a lot of time on the Yard today, Thursday. It was a cold, bright morning in Annapolis, but the sun warmed things up as the day went on. There are lots of parents strolling around in blue and gold, obviously waiting to set out for Philadelphia tomorrow. After corresponding on this network with the mother of a plebe girl from California, we finally met tonight when she came for dinner. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU, Mike and Sandi, for making such friendships possible! We ate early, in order to be able to attend the bonfire and pep rally at 1930. The fire pyre was not such a huge one as the disaster pyre several weeks ago at another school: only hay bales and wooden pallets on ours. A scaffold stuck out at the top, with a noose. On the ground was a replica of an Army mule. He was later hoisted to swing from the petard. There was loud music playing, across Farragut Field, from the stage area. The evening's events started there. The men's rugby team did a hysterically funny musical number dressed in black sports bras and mini skirts, with bikini bathing suit bottoms underneath! We were then treated to rallying words from the "Supe" and the Coach, plus the team's co-captains. (The Superintendant promised everyone in the Brigade a weekend if Navy wins!) The Coach and captains told us how much they need the spectators in the stands to help them out by cheering to drown out the calls of the opposing QB in tough spots. The cheerleaders danced (on the ground) and were thrown into the air and led us in cheers, accompanied by the D & B's. We adjourned to circle the pile and watch the Supe and the co-captains light torches and throw them on the pile. Judy took videos and I shot a roll and a half of film. It WAS impressive!! The mule got a cheer when he went up in flames. We had to move back several times to avoid being singed by the heat. It was nice and warm for awhile, as you can imagine! JUST as the fire was burning down to uninteresting, the fireworks started! Shot after shot into the night sky. Twisters and spirals going up, rather than just straight rockets. LOTS of color. The MOST spectacular, however, was the BEAT ARMY sign (near the ground) in lights that sparkled, with HUNDREDS of white crackers going off behind it, in a screen effect. While the last smoke was still fading off into space, the firemen spread out a long black plastic sheet and started spraying it with water. Ask your mids to tell you about Carrier Landings in the halls on deck. This was Outside Carrier Landings. As more and more mids got enthused, the layers of clothing started coming off. Three or more of them at a time would run from the far end, literally DIVE onto the black sheet, and slide on their bellies as far as possible. The women couldn't go very far -- T shirts create friction. The men started with blue and gold gym suits, but ended up stripping to their jockey shorts and sliding ALL THE WAY to the end. I estimated about 50 feet. They were deliriously happy! Wrestling like bear cubs (Oops! did I offend someone with that analogy? Sorry, but that's exactly what they looked like.) Afterwards, the King Hall staff had roast beef sandwiches and hot chocolate and warm cider and piles of cookies available under a tent on the field. In one of the courtyards close to Dahlgren, there was a Battle of the Bands going on. It got too cold to stay much longer, so we returned home. Apparently, all Mids had to sign a pledge that they would NOT do this and that (i. e. PRANKS) during Army Week. The Plebes, however, have been "decorating" the rooms of the Company Commanders with variations on wire hangers and wadded-up newspapers, etc. Lunches have been "crazy," according to one of my Sponsor Sons. Tomorrow is G-Day minus One, and should be equally unruly. WHAT GREAT FUN OUR KIDS ARE HAVING THIS WEEK!!! Even the plebes are able to relax a bit and enjoy. HOPE you are ALL able to see the game on Saturday, whether from home or in person. The Annapolis Capital is giving Navy a 7-0 advantage. Glad to be back online......... Some places, some moments endure. Moreover, they melt away the cynicism of a cynical age. These are some of them: There's a stand of pine trees down at Amen Corner at Augusta National, and when shafts of the early April sun slant through and cast shadows of gold, your breath catches in your throat and you think to yourself: This must be what the first dawn was like in Eden. . . . When the painted faces start streaming in . . . when the pep bands begin their brassy overtures and your feet set to tapping on their own . . . when the cheerleaders are being catapulted up to the rafters . . . when the first players come out for a casual shoot-around and have trouble swallowing . . . the Final Four crackles with an expectancy that raises the hairs on your arms. . . . Robed and oiled, reeking of primordial malevolence, fists wrapped and gloved, the heavyweights come snorting down the aisle, trailing entourages of barking sycophants, and you can feel the hackles rise on the back of your neck. You can smell the blood lust. Ringside . . . fight night . . .black moon rising. . . . They will march into Veterans Stadium in great columns and perfect moving squares, thousands as one, in measured, unconquerable lockstep. Through most of the afternoon, their football teams will do glorious, pitched battle, and when it is over, when the December gloaming enfolds them in chill and dark, when the cannons have fallen silent, they will stand at attention and salute one another and themselves, and it is not possible, whether you are hawk or dove, proud super-patriot or dubious peacenik, to look upon such a scene without feeling something welling up from deep inside you, from some place you had forgotten. . . . Army-Navy. Tingle-moments have been scarce of late in Philadelphia. But one beckons the day after tomorrow. Army-Navy. That contract is running out. We ought to do everything possible to not let it.Army-Navy is not about bowls or polls. Not about agents and payments under the table and coming out early. Hah! Coming out early? You commit to Annapolis, to West Point, you commit for the full four years, and then for five more after that. With the knowledge, the understanding, and the acceptance that it could be a commitment for life in every sense of the word. You commit to West Point, to Annapolis, you will not miss a class. And the class will not be Basics of Golf. You will arise, every day, at an hour that would make even John Chaney (Note: Temple's basketball coach, for the non-initiated) nod in approval. You will be cut absolutely no slack if you elect to play football. All that will earn you is an even earlier wake-up call, and a pre-dawn date with Satan, which is what they call the strength and conditioning officer. Army-Navy is a time warp. Army-Navy is about The Last Boy Scout. Army-Navy is about A Few Good Men. Army-Navy is about dedication and discipline, and it has about it elements that are hopelessly old-fashioned and incorrigibly hokey and so, so outdated. It is all those things, and it is one thing more: unforgettably wonderful. Army doesn't recruit outlaw athletes. Navy doesn't lower its standards when it recruits. In fact, Army and Navy don't recruit. They don't have to. There are always warrior-patriots who yearn to be part of the Long Gray Line, who see dress blues and white hats as a wardrobe of honor. And, yes, the cycles change with the times and the years, and lately it has been OK to root for the military again. The first time Army-Navy registered with you was when you heard what sounded like a vaudeville pairing: Mr. Outside and Mr. Inside. Davis and Blanchard. Half a century ago, when Glen Davis wasn't turning the corner, then Doc Blanchard was thundering between the tackles, and your grandfather was singing lustily: "On Brave Old Army Team!" And your father and your uncle, each fresh from naval service in World War II, were muttering something about just wait, just wait, the Navy will be dropping an anchor on the dogfaces' heads. And then came Roger the Dodger. Roger Staubach, Navy quarterback, was a scrambler before anyone had heard the term. He ran from one side of your black-and-white TV set to the other and then disappeared out the back of it and ran up onto your roof, and then down into the driveway, while about 13 platoons of Army tacklers chased after him. And then it got to be the 1970s, and you made your way to the old wooden press box atop a dinosaur of a stadium in South Philadelphia. The First Union Center now sits on the bones of JFK. The last part of the climb to the press box was up a spiral staircase made of cold metal and coated with a thick layer of pigeon guano. At your seat, something conked you on the back of your head. It was a pipe, cold as an icicle. "That's one of the heating pipes," the man next to you said, laughing. Igloos are warmer. But you never noticed. You watched the Corps of Cadets stand the whole time, and the Brigades of Midshipmen matching them loyalty for loyalty, solidarity for solidarity, and the cannons booming with each score, and then it was over, and in the gloaming they stood and saluted. They had played the game for the best reason of all, and it had nothing to do with money or fame. Something caught in your throat, something made your eyes water. And the man next to you said, softly: "Blame it on the cold." BEAT ARMY *** USNA-NET post by: AUBEL Erik 00-12 AUBEL Nancy and Dave Have you subscribed to USNA-Sports yet? You might rent a large U-Haul truck, paint it blue and gold with water soluable paint, put your company mascot on the top and then fill the truck up with sofas from the ward room, beds from your rooms, boxes and boxes of food and drink, metal containers for building a fire, firewood, blankets, boom box, CDs and anything else to bring the comforts of home to your new home for the party filled night. Where would you park on Friday night ? The Veterans stadium parking lot of course where you would build a fire to keep you warm and cook your food while you waited to get dressed for the march on. March on is 9:30 AM and the game is 12:00. The gates to the stadium usually open at 8:30 AM. If this is your first Army/Navy game, you are in for a treat. During march on your heart will be filled with pride and your eyes filled with tears......so bring tissues with you. Also be advised that you cannot bring bottles or cans into the stadium and yes they do check at the gates and ushers will check in the stadium. You can bring in a thermos of coffee or hot chocolate to help ward off the early morning chill. I would also suggest bring sandwiches with you - the cost of food at the concession stands is pricey. It's an unbelievable family!! We would like to contribute to the website. Unfortunately I am not as eloquent as Joyce and many of you are, but I am a professional photographer and would like to contribute photos. Throughout the year I have been taken photographs of the Mids. I had an assignment to photograph and write a story about the three women from Delaware as they went through their Plebe summer begining with " I -Day." I was inside the Alumni Hall from 6:30 am until the Plebes marched on to " T Court." Following the Plebes as they meandered through a maze in Alumni Hall. I also had the pleasure of photographing the Plebes as they went through Plebe summer, ie Obstacle course, Damage control, rifle range etc. I would like to share some of those photographs with my new friends on this wonderful website.. Of course it is up to Mike and Sandi as to how many and the type of photographs that can be put on the net. For the last four years, My partner,( ie my wife who is also a photographer), have photographed all the Navy home football games, including every Army-Navy game from the sidelines for the past four years. We always get the Mids and Officers doing their antics as they cheer the team on. We will be on the sidelines tomorrow for this historical game ( I have 60 rolls of film...I guess that will be enough!!..:-) We will make sure we get plenty of photos of all the Mids and the activities for Mike and Sandi to choose from. We will have to shoot the game too ( the main reason why we're there........ smiles.) I also was at the Pep Rally and and the beginning of the running of the football. One photo I would like to share is the one I did inside King Hall.I had all the runners from the 13th company in a group pose inside King Hall before the run. Plus photos of the Admiral as he and the other members began their run carrying the football. Then I was taken over to the tracking station where they were tracking the runners and football...... If space permits, we would love to share as many photos as we can. Please don't flood Mike with requests for a specific Mid.....I will be sending him general photos of an event or special occasion...........culminating with Herndon!! My wife and I thoroughly enjoy reading all the e-mails. I can't think of a better blessing than to be a part of such a fine group of parents and friends who share such a treasured common bond. I had to go down to the Yard today to deliver CARE packages to some "restricted" mids, and thought you might like to know what Tecumseh and Bill the Goat are up to!! Bill first, as he's just inside the gate. SOMEHOW, his ram's horns and his tail are bright green! WEIRD bright green at that! MOST noticeable the second you cruise past the corner. On to Tecumseh. He is silver and black, MOST impressive from a distance and even more so when you approach. As a matter of fact, when you get close, you notice that half of his face is bright ORANGE! The 'Army vs. Navy 100th' seal that is seen on T-shirts, etc is painted on the pedestal. Of course, I forgot my camera! The front page of the Capital today proclaimed "Pranks precede annual rivalry," and I thought you might like to hear what THIS YEAR's mids have done: On Tuesday, the Naval Academy Flying Club flew to West Point and dropped hundreds of little foam cutouts of a ship that said, "Go Navy, Sink Army!" over the cadets' noon meal formation. In addition, the Capital states, "The Naval Academy attracts the best and the brightest students, and as 100 years of hijinks show, they're also the most ingenious when it comes to pulling pranks....... One prank that will go down in history was the one and only successful capture of Army's four mules in 1991, according to Tom Bates, the NCAA compliance coordinator for the Academy. In an elaborate stunt that took nearly a year to plan, 17 midshipment, two advisers and a local mule handler were needed to pull it off. Midshipmen disguised in Army fatigues led a commando-style raid and kidnapped four 1,000 pound mules. Dubbed "Operation Missing Mascot," the mids were able to transport the mules all the way back to the academy in time for the pep rally, but were stopped at the gate by Pentagon security agents. Meanwhile, Army has gotten Navy's goat many times. A few years ago cadets swiped Billy from the Naval Academy Dairy Farm in Gambrills. "They cut the fence to get in while a few feet away the gate was open, so we knew right away it was Army because they didn't even look at the gate," said Mr. Bates. This year, Billy the XXVIII is "in seclusion" he said. "Sometimes, it gets out of hand and officials clamp down on it, but mostly, it's just clean fun," said one former Captain, who lives in Annapolis and has kept an eye on the hijinks that still go on. Like in 1970, when Navy smoke-bombed Army when they marched on the field in Philadelphia. In 1977, the Class of 1976 "performed" "Army Wars," a spoof of Star Wars, with Rear Adm. James A. Winnefield, commandant of midshipmen, as star attraction. In 1982, Cadet Patrick Wray was at the Naval Academy as part of the exchange program between the two service academies. On the Thursday before the game, six people crept into his room while he was sleeping, wrestled him to the floor, hog-tied him, wrapped him in a blanket and put him on an elevator. Another cadet was covered in peanut butter and jelly, shaving cream and chocolate chips. Their counterparts - midshipmen at West Point - were covered with shaving cream and doused with cold water while eating. Visiting cadets are forced to eat "Beat Army meals" which include all the condiments - ketchup, mayonnaise, mustard, chocolate suace on salad and bread. But the exchange students don't give up without a fight. They are responsible for the "Beat Navy" messages that mysteriously appear on Tecumseh Court. One year, midshipmen rang the doorbell of an exchange Army officer and destroyed his car with a sledgehammer while he watched. When they were done, they gave him money the Brigade collected for a new car." It goes on to say that 3,000 people watched the Powderpuff (OOOPS! Officially it's Powder KEG) women's football game the other night. Navy beat Army 20-14. The women's swim team beat Army 152-148 also. GO NAVY!!! SINK ARMY!!! If statistics have anything to do with it, you might be interested to know that the series has Army as winner 48-44-7. BUT, Army won seven of the close games in the 1990's by a total of 24 points. Navy's two wins in the 90's have been by a total of 53 points. In the first 99 games, Navy has scored 172 touchdowns to Army's 169. Navy has scored 1,329 points to Army's 1,240. Hope this will put all of you in the mood for the BIG game. 12 noon on CBS. The "orange" is supposed to be a flesh tone as he is painted to represent the half human appearing, half robot of the "Terminator" - a most appropriate chose for the Army/Navy weekend. Banners were flying from the most incredible heights - the top of Bancroft Hall , the top rungs of construction scaffolding.- all proclaiming the same Beat Army sentiment. The little submarine displayed on lawn behind Lejune Hall had been thoroughly painted stem to stern with many different thoughts on the rivalry. Unfortunately, I didn't get to see it until after some "Kay-det" had edited and reworded the sayings to read beat Navy. I don't know if the prankster was an exchange student or a visiting team athlete as the Army swim team was there for a Friday night meet. (They lost by a large margin to Navy). Most every Mid I passed was sporting a "Beat Army" button somewhere on their uniform. Let's hope all this pre-game enthusiasm pays off with a BIG WIN in Philadelphia is just two short hours. Q: Do you know why the Army football team should change its name to the "Opposums"? A: Because they play dead at home and get killed on the road. Q: Why doesn't Army have ice on the sidelines during games? A: The guy with the recipe graduated. Q. What do you get when you drive slowly by the Military Academy campus? A. A degree. Q: What do a Navy Midshipman and a West Point Cadet have in common? A: They both got accepted to West Point. Q: What do you get when you breed a groundhog and a West Point Cadet? A: Six more weeks of bad football. Navy is playing Army, which has a first down with three minutes left in the half. An Army fan sets off a firecracker, and Navy, thinking it's the ed of the half, runs off the field. Three plays later, Army punts. Bob Sutton gave his Army football team a few days off. Several decided to go down to Panama City Beach for fun and relaxation. Coach Sutton saw the players the first day back at practice and asked about their vacation. "Not good coach," said the players. "We never made it to the beach." "Why not," the coach asked, "car trouble?" "No," they replied, "every few miles down the interstate we saw signs that said, 'Exit, Clean Restrooms'. You have no idea how many restrooms we cleaned between West Point and Panama City." The Annapolis grad walked into the bar, sat down and said, "Hey barkeep, you hear the joke about the four West Point players in a farmhouse?" Chairs scraped behind him, and four of the biggest, meanest guys in the bar stood up. "We played for Army. You sure you wanna tell that joke?" The Navy grad smirked in disbelief and said, "What, and have to explain it four times?" Q: How many West Point plebes does it take to change a light bulb? A: None, it's a second year course. Q: Did you hear that Army just bought twenty new septic tanks? A: Yeah, and Army coach Bob Sutton says as soon as they learn to drive them, they're gonna invade Annapolis. Q: How many Air Force Cadets does it take to change a flat tire? A: Three, two to go for beer and one to call daddy. Q: How many Navy Midshipmen does it take to change a flat tire? A: Five, one to change the tire and four to lament how wonderful the old tire was. Q: How many Army Cadets does it take to change a tire? A: Just one, but he gets four hours credit and it counts as a lab science! Q: What's the difference between a West Pointer and a catfish? A: One's a slimy, smelly, scum-sucking bottom feeder, and the other is just a fish. Q: What are the best four years of a West Pointer's life? A: Third grade An Army football player was almost killed in a tragic horseback riding accident. He fell from the horse and was nearly trampled to death. Thank God the manager of the K-Mart came out and unplugged it. Q: How come the Army football team doesn't have a website? A: They can't string three "W's" together. Q: How many Army Cadets does it take to screw in a lightbulb? A: Only one - but he just holds onto the bulb and expects the world to revolve around him. GO NAVY!!!BEAT army!!! A great buffet filled our tummies. And the game filled our hearts. We did notice right away the CW stickers, and those of us in touch with the Yard, knew what that was about. Both sides were touched by this gesture. The cheering and jeering came from both sides. I did enjoy the alumni with painted faces (and these were not the recent grads!). Of course we held our breath until the outcome was final (too many disappointments before). And then the place let loose. Then the alumni sang for us. The Army alumni were subdued as they sang, but you can bet the Navy alum sang out with strong, solid voices. (The advantage to mostly male establishments is the wonderful male voices we heard!) Then we heard the young people on TV singing and the place fell silent. Everyone left, with promises of NEXT Year> We may not have been in the Philadelphia crowd, but the support for both teams was strong, and just as energized. We had 116 people, 80% of which were Navy in attendance. Some of us drove for 2-3 hours to get to the party, but it was worth it. Leslie Standen (our party organizer) and volunteers decorated the bar with great posters. We had our own "pom poms". Our "ships bell" was rung for each scoring point. We had a great time! Every time Navy scored our "Plebe Dads" (and a few other energetic Dads) did pushups! We all did so much hollering, we have sore throats. Mike and Sandi: I wanted to let you know that several people brought the "cards" you made up for us (and we printed out) from your webpage. We were handing them out all over the sports bar, most everyone there is already on the list! People said what a "Godsend" it is for us! Thanks for making it possible. Now that our Mid is a senior we don't hear much about what goes on "back there". Without this listserver many us of wouldn't know about all the great things going on. It was the cold, which has previously served as a ready excuse for all the teary eyes! I am joking, of course. None of us need an excuse for our feelings of pride and patriotism, which well up every so often at these games. Watching the Mids enjoy their victory was as satisfying as the game itself. I wonder if those of you who watched on TV were able to enjoy the homemade Videos, produced by the Mids and Cadets. My favorite of the day was a take-off on a popular TV commercial. It began by showing a book, football for dummies, and saying "Army play book - $6.00," then, "paying off the Army QB - 43 cents," there were a few parts to it which I can't remember, but it ended with "Obliterating Army - Priceless." Another was a little boy, about 4 or 5, dressed in an Army shirt, holding a stuffed mule, trying to thumb a ride from a little girl in her toy car. She passed him right by, so he changed into a Navy shirt and threw down the mule. Now the little girl stops and picks him up, and they smile and drive away, running over the mule. There were many more, and each was great! The amount of work that must go into the making of these spirited pieces has to be enormous. The mids who make them must first submit a proposal and get permission. Can you imagine adding this to their already overloaded schedules? I hope these pieces get some extra life and use elsewhere! One more thing, an apology to anyone who my husband annoyed today. He insisted on taking the Billy flag off the house and waving it whenever he felt the urge! He did stay in the aisle, and now that I think of it, he probably only annoyed the Army fans nearby anyway! Hope you all enjoyed the day as much as we did. It was far too early to be up on a Saturday but thoughts of Army-Navy swept the fog away. We moved wordlessly around the house, preparing for the trip down the turnpike where we would meet "friend and foe" for the annual Army Navy Game Party. After a quick stop for gas, not-so-good coffee and Hostess powdered donuts, we were off. The two hours from Tulsa to Oklahoma City were rain drenched and I couldn't help but think, "Maybe it would have been wiser to watch the game from the couch at home". We pulled in to the Varsity Grill just after 10:00 CST. The place was coming to life with a somewhat weary looking staff who seemed to be thinking "Who are these people?" After greeting a handful of Navy and Army parents, we staked our claim to a good spot in front of the giant TV screen. More not-so-good coffee and the traditional concerns about whether the satellite equipment would work. Some preliminary planning was made as to a co urse of action if the technical equipment proved to be unworthy of the task. Snow on the screen was not reassuring. A bemused manager seemed oddly confindent that everything would go according to plan and that we would not need to vacate the premises of his establishment to find a working tv. More friends, Navy and Army, continued to gather and a sizeable crowd of Academy partisans filled a large portion of the restaurant. TV's all over the place sprang to life with the pictures from Philadelphia. The Dads were finally able to holster their pepcid and prilosec. As scenes from the March On were replayed, I thought back to December 7, 1991. A lifelong dream had come true for me that day as I sat on the very top row of Veteran's Stadium. I was finally in Philly to see the Army-Navy game. Even the agrophobia-induced death grip on the steel girder next to my seat did not quench the excitement. With me that day was a 15 year old. Little did I know that as he watched the Brigade that day, he purposed in his heart to one day stand among the ranks of midshipmen. These thoughts cascaded through my mind as I knew he was proudly standing at the front of his company on this day. I wanted so badly to be there. As the pregame continued, the occasional tear would find its way down the cheek of a parent. One here. One there. And the staff wondered, "Who are these people?" Just as the game started a sort of quiet came over our crowd. Not a hush exactly, just a quiet. Everyone's attention was drawn toward the entrance where an elderly, yet stately gentleman was making his way across the room. There was a faint murmur as the word passed among those in attendance. It was Admiral John Kirkpatrick, USNA Class of 1931, escorted by a somewhat younger West Point alum. The Admiral moved slowly, a twinkle in his eye. He was in command, and we all knew it. As fathers rushed to shake his ninety-something hand, he took his place among Navy Moms young enough to be his granddaughters. Watching Army Navy one more time. Navy wins. Icing on the cake. Life has its compensations. I was glad I made the trip. GO NAVY! Brad Powers Tulsa *** USNA-NET post by: POWERS Joshua Dustin 00-2 POWERS Brad Have you subscribed to USNA-Sports yet? To: usna-net@navy-usna.org Hi all you parents!!!! Wow...the feeling you all must be feeling, even I was overcome with pride when I saw (on TV) the Brigade march on the field. As I once mentioned...I'm not a parent. I'm a friend of a midshipman, and hopefully i'll be a mid too in a couple years. So obviously this week was quite different from any of the other stories I've heard. All this week I've definately been in the Navy Spirit. I made some puffy paint T-shirts saying such things as "Beat Army" "Go Navy" "Sink the Cadets", etc. Everyone at school thought I was obsessed and Weird...but I just explained to them it was Army week, and a few other people who had Navy clothes ended up wearing them by the end of the week! It was so awesome, I don't know why, but it was like a connection to something great....The Naval Academy. Everyone should be so proud to have their sons and daughters there. I can't even begin to imagine that pride. Finally Saturday came, after being called psychodic by a teacher, getting the Army recruiter for our school, and even the Air Force Liason officer to cheer for Navy...it was finally here! Waking up by 11 was not my most favoite thing to due on a Saturday morning after not getting to bed before 1 all week while I waited for paint to dry to make the other sides of the shirts. However I just thought of the mids who were boarding the bus at 5:15 (4:15) my time and I popped right out of bed. My family had a christmas party to attend today and wouldn't you know it, it was right during the game!!! Well, my parents knew how much this game meant to me and brought along our handheld TV to the party. The reception was terriable, but I got through it...I got to watch the game! Everyone at the party was very excited when Navy won as well!!!!! I was however diappointed that I couldn't REALLY see the game that well and wished I would've taped it. When I got home from the party one of my friends called me up who is very sick of anything to do with Navy since that's all he hears, and told me he taped the game and wanted me to come over and watch it with him! It was awesome!!! So, being stuck here in Wisconsin wasn't too bad. I would've given anything to catch a glimpse of Techumpseah or feel the energy at the game, but I'll never trade these memories Navy gave me today. Your sons and daughters are some of the finest young people in this nation! Thank you so much for all the stories, I love reading them!!! Go Navy, way to Beat Army!!!!!! "The commandant is the equivalent of a dean of students at a civilian college and holds a wide array of responsibilities." The Captain is a 1977 graduate of the academy, and was Brigade Commander while here. He later returned to Annapolis as a company officer. (Admiral Roughhead is moving on to serve as commander of Cruiser Destroyer Group TWO based in Norfolk, VA. Capt. Locklear comes to the academy from his most recent post as the executive asst. to the vice chief of Naval Operations in Washington, DC. He enlisted in the Navy in 1972, and was selected to attend the Naval Academy Prep School. He then attended the academy, graduating with a degree in operations analysis. In the past two decades, Capt. Locklear has had several assignments and graduated with Top Gun honors from the Surface Warfare Dept. Head School. He has commanded the destroyer USS Leftwich and Destroyer Squadron TWO, assigned to the USS Eisenhower Battle Group. He has also served as chief of the Regional Engagement and Presence Joint Warfare Capabilities Assessment Branch in the Strategic Plant and Policy Directorate of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in the Pentagon. Admiral Ryan said, "He is an accomplished leader with superb fleet experience and will be a great rold model for midshipmen." I can tell you that the mids I have spoken with were looking forward to whoever the new appointee might be, and were HOPING that he would be an academy graduate AND a Captain. Actually, I met Capt. Locklear by chance the night of the bonfire for a quick moment, when he stopped to thank a civilian staff member who had done something for him. Nice gesture!! I counted my blessings many times on Saturday. The morning started our fairly well. I was up before 530 and began packing everything to go with us. The cameras, the jackets, the food, the blanket, the sheet banner for the Mids to hang, the tickets. Everything was OK and accounted for, so by 645 we left the house and headed north towards Philadelphia. We are only a mile or so away from Rt. 896 and as soon as we were on this road we noticed a lot of police presence. We guessed that the Academy contingent was on its way north and that the State Police were at most intersections to hold traffic for all zillion busses to pass. I kind of got nervous, because we still had to stop for gas and camera film (apparently the 200 speed I had picked up was not what the camera man had ordered) I had planned the trip to be ahead of the busses, so as not to be stuck behind them in traffic. We ended up in front of them, but only because we followed a whole line of traffic through an intersection that had already been set up for the busses to pass through. We were however going across the traffic pattern. We made it to I95 and zipped up toward the stadium. All was going as planned. Driving into the parking area I started to pull our the tickets. Where were they?! I tore my car apart and started to despair. They were not there. I called my neighbor on the cell phone and had him get into our house and sure enough they were sitting in the envelope on my desk. I couldn't believe it. Somehow I had managed to pack and then unpack them at home. What to do. OK we were only about 1 hour and 20 minutes from home. Could we go back and get here in time? We could if we didn't mind missing the march-on, but that was not to happen. I called my sister, but her phone was busy. Could I find someone sweet enough to drive them to us, Probably. Instead, I sent my very calm, and understanding husband on a ticket search. As I loyally read the list mail, I knew that there were still some tickets out there to be had. If only we could be so fortunate to hook up with someone who had a couple left. Within 10 minutes and only going about the span of 4 cars, my husband came back with 2 tickets. Not only that, but they were in a great section. The 300 level. I can never thank Paul from North Jersey enough. What a lifesaver! We got into our seats, made another call home to the neighbor to let him know the tickets were his if he wanted and if not that he could gibe them to anyone who wanted them. It was only 820, so there was plenty of time for them to get there for the game. (Ended up nobody in my neighborhood wanted to make the trip up. Can you believe that!) We loved the entire game. Ended up sitting in both our original seats and our newly acquired seats. Original ones were right on the field with the Mids. You can't see the game, unless you turn and look at the big screen, but the atmosphere was electric. After our Mid found us at half-time we made our way to our other seats and actually watched the plays take place on the field. What a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon. I tried to hide my tears when the final seconds ticked off the clock, but there were not many dry eyes around me, so I got everything on my video camera to capture the history taking place. During the march on I had walked around to get a better video spot and some guy reached over and said hi with a hug and a kiss. None other than our friend Mike Zets. Those ribbons really work. Didn't see too many others, but I had a few list members approach me since I was wearing mine. Next time, I think I will start bringing extra to outfit anyone who forgot theirs. I met Peg Sheradin? in the stands and we had a great conversation. What a pleasure to meet one more Mom. Finally, we found our Mid and headed back home for a nap and a few visits to family that he missed at Thanksgiving. By 2245, we were back on the road t Philadelphia and he was on his bus by midnight. He was so tired, as were most I saw, and welcomed the chance to sit and nap. He reminded us that he is home in only a few more days and I just couldn't believe that so many days had gone by between I-Day and Thanksgiving and now I would have him home in just a few short days. Well, I am still very thankful for everyone who helps on and off the list and know that this family is just the best. Please send your responses to Dindy at: LIEBERTCO@aol.com =========ORIGINAL MESSAGE====================== this is from today's Phila. Inqur. ...a column by Bill Lyon... I think he definitely got it.... "The 1900's may be about to disappear, but Army-Navy endures. And this is how you know. The game itself need not even be very good, because everything surrounding it is so emotionally luminous. Good, bad or somewhere in between, the game touches people all over the world, from men in all the ships at sea to the lowliest grunts in the most desolate trenches, those who have served, those who are serving, and those who will serve. Navy will be forever able to boast that it won the final game of the 1900's, 19-9, and did so, ironically enough, with two weapons that are always identified with the Army. Those would be infantry and artillery. The infantry took the form of Navy quarterback Brian Madden, a relentless and tireless and sturdy sophomore whom the Midshipmen rode like - you should pardon the expression - a rented mule. The artillery was represented by the howitzer legs of Tim Shubzda, the Navy kicker, who tried four field goals and made them all, and the Navy punter, Tray Calisch, whose cross-country missiles kept Army pinned way back and forced it to take the long way home all day. Forty-one time, Navy snapped the ball and entrusted it to Madden's keeping. Madden gouged out 177 yards, which was an imposing bit of earth-moving. Asked if 41 carries might not make a person the least be weary, Madden replied that he was fresh as dawn, and expressed astonishment, politely, that you would have to ask why. As others had patiently explained a thousand time before: "Sir, because it is the Army game, sir." But of course. Madded is only a sophomore. He will get to do this two more times. Such a prospect rightly strikes him as an honor. He is from Oklahoma, and he is strapping and strong, and he is an intriguing combination of muscle and touch. As a high school wrestler, he was 32-0 in his senior year, and he carries only a 3 handicap on the golf course. He took the final snap of the game yesterday, then took a knee. Navy was close to the Army end zone, but even in a rivalry as passionate as the, you do not machine-gun the lifeboats. Besides, they will do it again next year. At high noon, Cadet Deborah Brown of West Point, Company G-2, in a vibrant and crystalline voice, sang the national anthem before a crowd that stood at respectful attention. Right hand either were over hearts or engaged in taut salute. No twitching. No scratching. No conversation. No beered-up yahoos spewing profanities. And then the parachute teams dropped from the sky, jumpers from both academies, the Leap Frogs of Navy followed by the Golden Knights of Army, hovering, accelerating, riding the wind currents, sticking their landings on the newly shampooed green concrete at Veterans Stadium. From the moment they marched into the stadium - ever a sight to stir the soul - the Corps, and the Brigade taunted and teased each other. You watch it - the clever and the sophomoric - and you suspend belief for an afternoon. For example, where else - well, other than in a tavern - can you see a mule riding a tank and it's OK? Even the coin toss was unique. When was the last time four Heisman Trophy winners assembled at midfield? The names of these four echo with glory even now - Glenn Davie and Pete Dawkins of Army, Roger Staubach and Joe Bellino of Navy. Staubach had spoken at a banquet the previous night. He had brought down the house, as he usually does. He had talked about how, in all those years with the Dallas Cowboys, every time he was introduced as being from Navy, it never failed to put a catch in his throat. But his first words, typically, were not about himself. They were about another quarterback, an Army quarterback. For all the games he won and the fame he accumulated, Staubach noted, Rollie Stichweh beat Navy for Army in Staubach's senior year. That is another part of the allure of Army-Navy - the regard that such mortal rivals hold for each other. It is an emotion that is transcendent. Maybe the best explanation of Army-Navy can be found in two men - Damon Myers and David Christman. They are a generation apart and separated by the chasm that divides Army and Navy. Yet they will walk together forever. In 1997, Myers was a junior at the Naval Academy and a football player. But on the day of the Army game, he was in a hospital bed, tubes running in and out of him, hooked up to IV drugs and all the plumbing that can be thrown at cancer. Navy, to Myers' utter delight, won. Big. And then all of the Army players signed a game ball and sent it to him. It was a gesture of class and graciousness by the vanquished. Damon Myers recovered. In 1998, he returned for his senior year and was able to play some football. And when the Army-Navy game ended last December at the Vet, with Army victorious this time, he stood at attention while the alma maters were played. The tears ran like rivers down his face. And Lt. Gen. David Christman, the superintendent of the United States Military Academy, a three-star general, came up to him and put an arm around him and pulled him close. And they stood there in the December gloaming, clinging to each other, the general and the midshipman, hot tears on cold faces, and those who looked upon that moment were moved beyond words. There should have been a picture of that moment. and then, whenever somebody wondered out loud what it is, exactly, that so grips you about Army-Navy, all you would have to do was point at that picture: the cannon fire echoing in the chill, the call of the trumpets dying in the dusk - and two generations, two fierce opponents, holding onto each other." thank you , Bill Lyon Dindy Liebert Phila.
