Without you three and also so many of the other parents on the list, my year would definitely have been emptier. You have provided me with information about the yard that has been invaluable to me and you have enabled me to make contact with so many kind parents on this net. My son has received care packages from mothers on the list, for which I am extremely grateful as it is very difficult to send anything from here - not only is it costly for us, but some of the packages do not arrive. He has enjoyed the care packages enormously. I was sad that he had to turn down the offer of one care package from the mother of a plebe in his company because he did not want to be accused of favouritism, but the thought was greatly appreciated. Llewellyn, my son, is also very appreciative of the contact that the list provides his mother, as he is aware of how difficult it is for me to have him so far away and not to be able to see him more than once a year. He and his friend from Estonia are spending their vacation with a lovely family in Florida. I was touched last night to receive a phone call from my son just after midnight our time. We had been watching the New Year celebrations round the world on television and had just seen some shots of Estonia which is in the same time zone. These two young men were in adjoining telephone booths in Key West, preparing to celebrate their new year and were both telephoning their families first, and timing their calls exactly for midnight on two other continents. Thanks to the inventors of cellphones, my son was able to contact me at a friend's home and speak to his whole family. The family might not be physically close to one another all the time, but Llewellyn has managed to maintain the family's emotional closeness by his weekly phone calls for the two and a half years he has been at the Academy. From what I hear about the other mids at the Academy, this is the kind of thing most mids do. I am not sure that it is necessarily the Academy that teaches them this type of behaviour, but I am grateful that my son is able to study and live with young men and women who are like-minded. Sponsor mom, Joyce, I think you deserve a medal and considerable recognition for being such a super sponsor parent. At the very least, I think the Academy should pay you to train other sponsor parents! I am sure that any mids who have you as their sponsor parent have far fewer difficult times at the Academy than other mids do, simply because you are there supporting them in the amazing way you do. My very best wishes to everyone on the list. Moyra Evans South Africa H.V. Having met Joyce's fantastic mother, who, at age 91, charmed my 13 year old son, a young man who only yesterday said of Mrs. Wolff, "I can't believe she's 91! She looks so young!" (impressed as he was by Mrs. Wolff's smile and bright eyes that a fuchsia pink sweater accentuated perfectly), I must say that with Joyce and Mrs. Wolff, we have a sponsor Mom and sponsor Grandmother team who exemplify the love, devotion, generosity and energy that drives exceptional hearts to care for others, and to do their utmost, no matter how late or fatigued or uncomfortable they may be. The last time I visited with Joyce, Barry and Dinah (Mrs. Wolff), their two sponsor sons arrived to have pizza with the Hoffers as we were leaving. Each mid greeted Mrs. Wolff with a hug and a kiss and genuine affection and concern for her health. And now, when I read that Dinah made the effort to overcome much pain so as to join her daughters, son-in-law and friends in greeting the New Millennium along the Academy's seawall, I learn from this incredible woman, who cherishes life, how courage and determination and love catapults the human spirit beyond itself. Joyce, as we well know, inherited her mother's passion for sharing: stories, observations, and a millions little acts of kindness that first caught my attention when I read about her funny conversations with her sponsor sons regarding Bancroft Hall's mighty mice! I feel so grateful that our sons and daughters have sponsor families like the Hoffers!! Sponsors show our young people how civilians apply the concept of ship, shipmate, self in daily life. This too must be said about Mike and Sandi, whose devotion to us parents makes it possible for us to evolve and adapt most gently and happily to the changes taking place in our sons and daughters. If mothers and fathers across continents can overcome that cold, hard barrier - distance - and even from as far away as South Africa, participate in this magnificent conversation through which we have learned about rugby, the medicinal way to apply frozen peas and carrier landings during Beat Army week, then surely we build a parallel community to that of our Mids. If anything, the USNA - Net community embodies the potential of our new century, new millennium: how strangers from many towns and cities can come together to celebrate good times and to support one another as needed. More than ever, Mike and Sandi, you remind us that each time we log on to our servers, we must not view ourselves as islands but as parts of the whole. For this insight and daily reminder, I am profoundly grateful! May you have a Happy and Fruitful 2000! We could only stay for the day as My wife and I coiled not get the time off for our nephew's graduation. The graduation that year, 1997, was Thursday of the same week. It is my understanding all mids have to be present for graduation unless their block 1 summer assignment begins before graduation. That peculiar fate of scheduling usually does not happen to plebes, but it can. Plebes can come home or go wherever after graduation and commissioning ceremonies providing they do not have a military obligation like watch. If they have their leave during block 1, they can usually leave right after graduation/commissioning ceremony. Otherwise they usually start their block 1 summer assignment right after graduation. My son had his block 1 assignment starting the Monday after the Thursday graduation/commissioning ceremony. His block 1 assignment was right at the academy. He was on leave for block 2, then had his YP cruise for block 3. Then it was back to the academy for Brigade reformation starting his 3rd class year. FYI, after Herndon, plebes are no longer plebes, but 4th class mids until they return from their YP cruise at which time they become 3rd class mids. Intersessionals are those periods/meetings when it is determined a mid needs extra help and might be required to attend summer school rather than take leave during his/her scheduled leave block. Also, the summer assignments are not usually known until a week or two before commissioning week as the Navy doesn't always know it's ship availability until then for summer assignments. One of them is Leave during which he/she can go home or where ever else they choose. You can't plan on your Mid's flight until you know his block schedule. There will be plenty of time but I don't see a need to stick around until Wednesday since hotel costs are sky high during this period. Also, pardon the dumb question, but what is "May Intersessional?" Also, after graduation, how soon is the new "ex-Plebe" allowed to go home? Late this afternoon I scooped up my returned Mid, stopped by Graul's for the lobsters and shrimps I had ordered, and rushed him back to our house for 2 hours of freedom and dinner with balloons, hats, noisemakers and chocolate desserts. He had to stand watch from 8-11, so I took him back to the Yard with bags of goodies to last till the others come back, plus a champagne-TYPE bottle of sparkling white grape juice to celebrate at midnight with his roommate. I left my car parked at THE PRIMO spot, near the 7 Seas monument on the seawall, where the Severn opens out into Annapolis Harbor. At a quarter to midnight, we returned in the other car - Barry and I, plus my sister, a young friend from Sweden, and my 91 year old mother! She has not been well, but I insisted that we all celebrate in a memorable way. Instead of firing the blasts from a barge in the Chesapeake, ALL the fireworks went off from the road by the Naval Academy seawall. If any Firsties had cars there yesterday, they were GONE by today!!! Blast after blast, color after color, booms and cascades and flashes. The gold and white ones were spectacular. I shot lots of film, and HOPEFULLY, will have some pictures for Mike early this week. The Grand Finale was so impressive, I was moved almost to tears. THINK OF IT! We have turned a century! ALL OF US TOGETHER! It was not so meaningful to prepare for it -- it is powerful to experience it. And NEXT YEAR, we can look forward to the true millennium! I have asked my Mom to please write down for her grandchildren, and now her first great-grandchild, the memories and words of one who has lived all but 7.5 years of the past century. Mind-boggling, isn't it? She is a poet and a writer. Although in great pain now, she is the one to put things in perspective for the rest of us. Here's to 2000 at the US Naval Academy! Here's to 2000 in your homes, in OUR homes, with OUR Navy family. Here's to old friends and new friends. That means they are on a leave status. Sometimes they don't get it, like my youngster year, but usually its a given. This is a good time to come home if your plebe is going to have a training block right after graduation. If not, most mids use it as another Spring Break, and find some place to get into mischief. When intersessional leave is over, we have another reform, filled with meetings and time to pack up our rooms. Herndon will kick off Commissioning Week. That week the days will be busy with parades and room inspections, but the nights are free. Everyone gets liberty, which will expire sometime between ten and midnight. Hope this helps clear up the end of the semester for everyone. Very Respectfully, 1/c Adam J. To: usna-net@navy-usna.org Joyce was so right about all the things that went on on New Year's Eve....wish I had thought ahead to catch up with her! My husband, our mid and I all went down to First Night....actually, my husband and I attended First Night...Peter went with friends to bring in the New Year.... I had made reservations at the Navy Lodge and at the last minute a high school friend of our sons wanted to come along.. We were anticipating that all four of us would have to be in the one room...but true to form...the people at the Navy Lodge were MOST helpful....and promptly after 6 they gave us the first room that had been cancelled....and so happily ensconced we got ready for the night's festivities... Peter and his friend went to the Ram's Head and we left to wander around to the various things going on in Annapolis... Each venue was lit with decorted white bags and lights ....We walked down Main Street ...gawking at the Mime's in white masks and satin hooded robes as they posed....and at all the children....As is happened, most of what we wanted to see was at the Academy...so we walked there first...and the first thing we did was to go to the sock hop...which featured a fabulous gorup called the Bel Airs.....oh those oldies were so great to hear...and we even danced a bit....Next we caught a Harlem Wizard show and then on to Dalghren for some Reggae and finally to St. John's for the Swing group....then we stopped to see a co-worker of my husbands...Listen to this..for about 30 years now, this group of people who went to high school together has been getting together for New Years Eve...it's not always the same number of people...but always some of the group...Well, this year they ALL made an effort to get together and in order to do this they picked a somewhat central location (Annapolis) and they rented the WHOLE Maryland House...One of the group who lives nearby set up the catering and they had the whole first floor loaded with food, fun and a band....they had face painting for the kids and several rooms set aside upstairs and babysitters and everything... they had a blast!!! Anyway....about 11:15 we left Annapolis and on the suggestion of the Navy Lodge Desk Clerk wandered down the road to the Naval Station and found a wonderful spot right on the shore to watch the Fireworks...it was so romantic...we opened the tailgate, popped the cork on our champagne...lit our sparklers, put on my tiara (and husband's hat)...listened to the countdown from Times Square and toasted the New Year with the incredible backdrop of fireworks from across the water!!! Jan.1 we slept most of the day as we had watched the TV late into the night (or should I say early into the morn) to see 2000 arrive in other parts... so it was a lazy wonderful day...followed by dinner in town and a quiet night of rest and reading.... This morning we got up and did some errands before taking son Peter to the airport of the Squash Team's trip to England... they will be back on Sunday next...I am sure all the wiser and stunned about the way squash is played in its original state! What a wonderful New Year's Eve.... we plan on coming back agiain next year for First Night! (although I don't know why they don't call it Last Night as it is on the 31st - Joyce ...any insight?) It was so stange, as Joyce says, the Academy is so quiet~~~~ I will be glad to see the mids back in town too... The Herndon climb is a site to behold - I have never witnessed a comparable feat in my life, even during Bloody Sunday (now outlawed) at VMI in 1959. Herndon is, beyond a shadow of a doubt, a testimony of what coordinated teamwork can and does accomplish. You'll see many attempts at heroism, but heroes won't accomplish the goal set before the Plebes until they figure out the only heroes are the ones that work together as a team which is the lesson Herndon teaches participants and witnesses alike. Recognizing this, Plebes are not allowed to congregate in groups of four or more during the last couple of weeks leading up to Herndon on the premise that such congregations are tactical planning or organizing sessions for the climb. Such organizing activities are not allowed before the actual climb. We have pictures of our son with his roommates after the 1997 climb and what a sight!!! We also still have, much to my wife's chagrin, a zip locked bag hidden away in the basement with a pair of lard coated, stinky socks that were retrieved for antiquity as the plebes scrapped off their lard covered clothes and skin just before being hosed down with soap and water prior to being allowed back in Bancroft. Experience has demonstrated it's better to have the cleaning process start outside rather than clog the drains in Bancroft. Sorry to drag this out, but if you have never witnessed the 'Climb", it is a must see. You'll never forget it or regret making the trip. It is also something for the Plebes to look forward to and focus upon during the dark days ahead. The time until May does pass quickly. This year Herndon is once again on a Friday, and it is highly recommended that you get to Annapolis on Thursday. First thing in the morning....get to the yard.....find a parking space and leave your car for the day...wear comfortable shoes and walk all over....Take chairs, blankets, icechest or whatever, over to the Herndon monument and stake out a spot... remember, once the climb starts , unless you are directly up against the ropes you will have to realize that you will be standing and wandering around trying to find a vantage point for the climb....it's a mob scene.....but so much fun... What we did was to set up 'camp' somewhere near where the Plebes come running from Tcourt....We set up chairs etc. and left them there all day.... as is typical on the Yard, nothing was ever disturbed and we were able to come back to it during the day...have our lunch there and relax before the festivities.... From this base camp we spent the day wandering around the Yard, taking in the formal parade and visiting the Mid store and museum..... Once the parade is over, wander back that way to your 'camp' and get ready for excitement! The noise that comes from T'court builds and builds until at 1pm there comes a massive wave of screaming , shirt-tearing, incredibly enthusiatic and pumped up Plebes....if you are lucky you may catch a piece of a tshirt that is torn from one of those fit and ready bodies...but stand out of the path or you WILL me mowed down....it is such a sight...one of those you have to be there things....The climb itself can take anywhere from an hour to three hours!....and the photo ops are many....the tension and excitement are contagious....be ready for a great time... and even the aftermath is photo worthy! Once the 'event' is over, your Plebe may be free to go to dinner or something....so give them a little time to recover and then enjoy..... Saturday is a day for parents of 2nd class parents!!! That's the ring dance day....and it is so exciting to gather near the Chapel and take pictures of all the beautifully dressed Mids.. (female mids may dress in formal gowns for the pictures before the dance - including the Ring dipping part, but must then change into Dress Mess for the event itself...(this has caused some dissappointment in years past...but unless rules are changed....it is a must...- I think many of the girls last year did not change and suffered some form of restriction as a result...not fun) Last year was our son's Ring Dance year and we spent a couple of hours taking pictures and such...it was great fun...then we took off and didn't return until much later for the fireworks (the dance is NOT for parents and should be avoided but there are plenty of places to watch the fireworks and your Mid will never know you're there if they don't want to ) Last year, Sunday was the day for the Blue Angels practice run and we stayed to watch that too....it was very exciting and not really organized but actually, I think more than they got the next day as the weather didn't cooperate on Monday.. when the real show is done..... If someone were to ask me what I would do and see as a Plebe parent, I would say....definately Herndon...and if you have the time , the Blue Angels...but remember...there will be other years to see these other things...so don't panic..... As to graduation itself....it is another incredible event not to be missed..(natch...) but what I mean is that if you do get the chance...go to graduation once before your Mid is doing it... I think it's something like your wedding...you don't remember much from the day itself...so in this case take advantage of the opportunity to see it at least once before you are involved in it.....We did last year and I am so glad...it allowed me to view it from a different perspective .... Have a good time......take lots of pics......do what you can and don't worry about it if you can't..... Before I tell you about a very special dinner tonight, let me remind you that the Maryland State Legislature convenes on January 12, for about four months, and there will be a hoard of legislators, press, associates, staff, etc. in town until early April. Parking will be nearly impossible and hotels and B & B's will be constantly full. If you are planning to visit Annapolis during that time, please call ahead and be sure you have confirmed reservations. I had promised to take dinner to the Yard for one of my Sponsor Sons and his roommate tonight. If you remember, last Fall I described a meal I had observed in Dahlgren, where a Mom had brought in a full dinner for her family. So I followed suit, and took disposable plates and tablewear, big napkins, chicken and rice with sauce, rolls and butter, salad and dressing, dessert, and even a CANDLE, as we didn't know if the hall would be open and the lights on! Blame the pouring down rain for the fact that I forgot beverages, so I bought the boys soft drinks -- the snack bar was open. Last fall, when I described on this net a meal I served at home, I "met" a lovely plebe mom from Long Island when she enquired if she could come have dinner with me. I regret that I can't invite all of you this winter, BUT I have received a request from that Sponsor Son of mine that I share his favorite recipe with his Mom and you. He had already told his roommate about my "Sticky Chicken." He was wishing it would be the main course, and his wish came true. They cleaned their plates. (The roommate is on the football team, but I had fed him once before and knew what to expect!) All I took home was the butter and dressing. Anyway, Sticky Chicken is easy, it's quick, and I hope you try it for your Mids and the rest of your family too. ENJOY!!! Joyce Hoffer, Sponsor Mom, Annapolis Mix together: 1 8 oz. bottle Russian salad dressing 1 12 oz. jar apricot jam 1 pkg. dry onion soup Arrange skinless chicken pieces in a baking dish. (I used 8 boneless breasts.) Pour soup mixture over them. Bake at 350 degrees until browned and done, 45 minutes to an hour, depending on your oven. (Can you guess who is NOT an exacting cook???) Serve over rice. MIDS LOVE IT! SO DO MY GROWN SONS!! *** USNA-NET post by: HOFFER Joyce and Barry Have you subscribed to USNA-Sports yet? My son was asked to stop by a history teacher's office, in Preble Hall, to discuss a paper. While he was waiting for the teacher, my son looked at the pictures on the wall of the current faculty. In the midst of the pictures was one of Harrison Ford, labled "Jack Ryan." In the book and movie The Patriot Games, the character Jack Ryan, played by Ford, taught history at the Naval Academy. My son had read all of the Tom Clancey novels in the series, and got a good laugh out of this! It was fun to have my mid home to tell us the little things that make life at USNA more real for those of us here. He took a red eye flight back last night, and arrived at BWI in the wee hours of this morning. We will miss him and his friends, but it is exciting to think that Spring Break is in two months and Herndon is just around the corner after that. Happy New Year! I am a Mid-mom with a unique experience about to happen -- first a little background. When my son entered the USNA in summer '96, I entered medical school after a 22-year career in aerospace. (We will graduate in May within four days of each other.) As a senior medical student, my training now involves elective rotations - which means I get to pick where I do training out in the field with real doctors. For a year and a half I have working to set up a one month rotation at....you guessed it, the USNA. It seemed to take forever to set up and get approved (before I started, I checked with my mid to be sure he didn't feel too wierd about having me on his turf). Well, I start my one month rotation on Monday, 1/10. I thrilled and excited to have the chance to serve the Mids and the Navy personnel and families! As a med student, I will be closely supervised by the Navy docs. I'm sure I'll learn a lot, as well as, hopefully, help the folks out in the clinics. Of course I'm hoping to spend a bit of time if possible with my Mid. I pledge to all you parents out there that I will treat your Mids with extra TLC. If I can access aol up there, I'll stay tuned to the Net and use the eponym "the mom-doc" in message subject headers. Finally, as a former active duty enlisted airman who had Academy ambitions a quarter century ago, but was denied due to my gender, this is somehow the completion of that old chapter. I feel really lucky. Thanks for this great net and all the discussions ! Y'all stay healthy out there ! I have talked to at least a half dozen who claim to have been out every night (or stayed up late every night) over the entire vacation. They are DRAGGIN!!! My plebe and his Mom stopped in for a late lunch, too. He turned 19 three days ago. Changed over the break: with new contact lenses, he is a VERY handsome, mature, serious young man! Dropped off some letters at the Main Office when I took the boys back to their wing. Almost all the formerly dark windows in Bancroft were lit, and I could see Mids unpacking and getting ready for their welcome-back dinner tonight. It was REALLY quiet on the Yard, though. No called-out greetings, car horns, or music. I expect things will return to normal status in the next few days as they all get reacquainted, share stories of escapades over the holidays, and show off their gifts. (A CERTAIN Sponsor Son of mine returned with an 8 ft. putting green and a golf club sticking out of his duffel.) If you have questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at mzets@mail.com. IMPORTANT.... Please be sure to identify any donation that is sent (either via the on-line donation site or via a check) as being from NAVY. We want to insure that our group is separated from the huge donor base (over 15,000 West Point Grads and Parents) so that our little part of the WP.ORG contributor base is given proper credit for the donations that are generated by our Navy Family. Write NAVY in the memo area of any check or check the NAVY box on the on-line donation site. Donations are strictly voluntary and are totally anonymous. Even I do not have access to who donates or what any individual donation may be. I will have access to a running total as the fund raiser goes on for about the next three weeks and will report our progress and level of participation during that time. More later today or tomorrow. The trip was offered to all the Mids, but he had to give a deposit for the trip many weeks ago so I do not know if the trip is still open. I saw that someone posted that the cost of the trip was $1000, but I believe we are paying about twice that amount and this amount includes their air fare, hotels and some meals. I assume it is the same trip but maybe since our son is not a member of the Club he has to pay more for the trip. It is a very good price for such a wonderful experience. Each year a group of Mids go and this trip has a reputation of being great. From the little I know the Mids are spending about 10 or 11 days in Israel. They will travel in civilian clothes but the goverment of Israel or the military or someone there will know that this is a group of Mids and will allow them in areas that normal tourists would not be allowed to see. The trip is certainly well planned, guided and supervised and if there are any problems in that area of the world that would put our Mids at greater than normal risk the trip is cancelled. Our son is reading and studying about the area and the places he will visit. He is very excited and is looking forward to the trip. If you have specific questions, please send them along and I will ask him the answers over the weekend. I like to think of USNA-Plebe as the family list and USNA-Net as our formal list. Even though the name is USNA-Plebe, it's the place where all of the lighter stuff belongs even if it's about non-plebe kinds of things. It is especially where all of the "Stories" belong. Also, kindly remember that you should only send messages to our lists that are for everyone to read. Let's not get carried away with those short one liners and private zings between only a few members. Every time you hit the send button you insinuate your message on everyone on the list. If you want to send a member a short zinger, do it privately to that member only. Our lists are NOT Chat Rooms and we are not IMing between only a few people here. There are 750+ on USNA-Net and 630+ on USNA-Plebe. That's a lot of people to have to endure someone's idea of a cute little one liner. Today by noon our Mids must commit to a numbered list of their preference for Service Assignment. They have several options, including Flight, SWO (Surface Warfare Officer), Subs, Marines, Supply, Intelligence, Med Corps, and a few others (with several sub-classifications in the first three). Now, there are many who have known since I-Day exactly where they wanted to be when they were commissioned. My son was not one of those... his eyesight took him out of flight from day one, he has never had a burning desire to fly or be on a carrier or in a sub or lead a platoon of Marines...The Navy called him, but he wasn't sure which "Navy" he wanted. He has been struggling with making the right decision, Mike and I have listened and "advised" - he has discussed the issue with his father in Michigan, we have been going back and forth for months on this. But today is the day. After one final call to his father and then to Mike and me last night, he has made his decision. And he feels really good about it. We all think that this is where he should be and this is where he will be happiest. Now, we wait for service assignment night - I have it on my calendar as the 28th of this month. That is the night that the Mids find out just where they will be assigned. MOST of the time they get what they wanted, but it is a nervous wait for them all!! For all of our members who have Firsties...Good Luck to your Mid today!! Here's hoping that everyone gets their first choice!! It seems that the NAAA is in the process of revamping their ticket sales. The ticket office tells me that they will be sending information out to all season ticket holders and to the brigade hopefully by the end of the month. As soon as I receive mine, I will pass the information along to you. In the meantime, keep after your mids. What I do know is that there will be a schedule of who can buy and when. I believe, although this is not by any means certain, that season ticket holders should be able to buy their tickets in early February. I don't know for sure when the Mids will be able to get tickets for their families, but I've been told, unofficially, that you should get your orders in at the earliest possible moment, because this game will sell out fast (location, location, location). I just picked up my older sponsor son. He tells me that there are a lot of people moving from one room to another in the hall, and that it's very busy right now. Tomorrow, when both my boys are here, I'll probably find out a lot more - but I'll bet by then you'll all know what I know about the doings in Bancroft. More later. (You remember... back in the 1900's) You can find all 41 of them (Plus the cover of the Program and on of our Tickets) on our website at www.navy-usna.org under "Photo Gallery" in the Main Menu and then at the bottom of the list of pics on that page. The photos can't do it justice but we thought we'd try to capture the many sights that don't make it to National TV Coverage. It's far more spectacular than any set of photos can capture. From Parachutists to A Blue Angels Fly Over to the "Secret" Go Navy - Beat Army Tip of the Covers. I tried to get it all for those that couldn't attend. You missed the game of the century. USNA-Net even made it to JumboVision at the Stadium thanks to a last minute request and some frantic faxing to the West Point Athletic Office which was in charge of such things this year. Believe it or not, I called on Thursday afternoon and inquired about getting a free Public Service Announcement up on the Jumbotron during the game. "No Problem" was the answer. With Friday being their travel day it took a fax of suggested text to get the message to them and on Saturday afternoon, during the game, we got our name in lights for all 70,049 attendees to see. We probably got a dozen new members because of it. I couldn't believe my eyes. Hope you enjoy the photos and don't forget to pass this news on to all that might be interested. Yes, that even includes your Mids and their Friends. I'm sure that many of them will find themselves in the pics. My son had written once in the past three years, when either Clinton or Gore visited the Yard, that they had to go through a similar exercise with confinement and closed windows. He said the roof perimeter of Bancroft had silhouettes of Secret Service personnel standing watch. I am guessing that the Mids are secluded so that terrorists could not dress as a Mid and casually walk by the dignitaries and blend in with all of the actual Mids. And I assume closed window shades helps the Secret Service to identify very quickly any unauthorized activity. Hopefully a retired officer or someone involved in government security can enlighten me. When President Clinton came to Annapolis to address the state legislature, I was working in the Visitor Center Gift Shop. He arrived at 10 and was supposed to leave after lunching with the representatives. We were confined in the visitor center/Halsey Field House from 8:30 until he left after 4PM. President Clinton had decided to walk down Maryland Avenue, shop, and meet the people. So while he was out in town shaking the hands of anyone who walked by, eating out in public in a local restaurant, and buying Hilary & Chelsea gifts for Valentine's Day, we were unable to leave our offices, even to walk over to Dahlgren for lunch. The entire length of King George Street from gate 1 to the water was closed and lined by Secret Service. When on e of the ladies I worked with opened the door to Halsey just to get a better look, the secret service slammed it shut so fast and hard, he almost broke her arm, which was resting on the door frame. We were told then that any mids who were upstairs in Halsey using the weight rooms, etc. were evicted and sent back to Bancroft because the windows on the second floor (where the weight room was) could be used as possible sniper nests. My oldest sponsor son told me last night about the restrictions in Bancroft for this visit (including the drawn shades). In addition an e-mail went out to everyone in the yard detailing where we can and can not park and ordering all firsties to move their cars by tomorrow at 12 (interestingly, the e-mail didn't specify noon or midnight). If I remember correctly from last time, the gates were closed & I think they even kept people from walking on or off the yard. If anything exciting happens on Monday, I'll be sure to let you all know that night. In the meanwhile, have a great week-end. I'm off to the store to buy the ingredients for Joyce's sticky chicken so that I can feed both my boys tonite. President Clinton was the speaker at the Air Force Academy graduation last May and my family attended. There were no searches going into the stadium -- the only difference that I could tell from previous graduations was that a large section of the parking lot was roped off for the helicopters. Of course, we saw Secret Service men roaming throughout the ceremony. And at the end, after the cadets threw their hats into the air, the young kids had to wait until the Presidential motorcade left the stadium before they could claim their hat. A funeral, on the other hand, is a solemn occasion and every effort must = be made, by the Secret Service, to keep it that way, while, at the same = time, meeting its' protective responsibilities. While the magnetometers = may not be in view, I assure you that some type of search will be = conducted (for people entering the "secure" area). =20 Many different considerations must be taken into account. The size of = the "secure area" is different in a stadium that it is in a closed = building (the Chapel). When I read that one of our members attended a = graduation at USAFA and that no magnetometers were present, I was very = surprised. Finally, the Secret Service is not the only agency or group of people = involved in planning events of this nature. Sometimes, the dignitaries' = staff members do not want the "public" involved in an event. = Politicians are drawn to crowds "like a moth to a flame" and eliminating = the possibility that there will be a crowd eliminates the possibility = that the dignitary will want to walk over and shake hands, etc. Very = often, people "blame" the Secret Service for decisions made by other = entities.
