Just Click on "Photo Gallery" in the main menu and then scroll down to the bottom of the list of selections. Click on "Breaking the Sound Barrier" to go to the viewing page. A word of warning, once on that page, when you click to view the video, you must have a copy of a Windows Media Player loaded and the download takes a while since the file is VERY large. I still think it's worth the wait. If you need the media player, there is a link provided for a FREE download. Also, Sandi allowed me to put my Christmas gift of a camera to use and we are broadcasting a live image taken out of our Computer Room window for all to enjoy the view of the snow in NE Ohio, just West of Cleveland. You'll find access to that in the main menu on our web site (next to FAQs at the bottom). You don't need any special software to view that or the BayCam Live Webcam that shows the Docks in Annapolis. A question has been asked and I though t I'd share the answer with all of our members for future reference... <<< We will be on vacation from time to time and it is doubtful if we will be able to check our e-mail and clear out the mail box. What is the best method of handling being away if it is a week or more? Do we remain on the list, or do we terminate and re-join or can we have our "mail held"? >>> There are two ways to handle the situation. In either case, please let us know a day or so BEFORE you want service to be interrupted and remember to SEND US A NOTE asking that complete service be restored upon your return. Best Method - We can temporarily put you on a "Digest" version of our Lists. Instead of each message coming individually, you will receive ONE message each day with all of that day's postings included. The messages are complete but combined into only a single message for that day. Nothing is left out. You will get one message EACH for EACH list to which you belong. This reduces the number of messages each day but keeps you up to date on what has been going on while you are away. Alternative method - We can SUSPEND your membership completely while you're gone. You will get no postings and will have to read what you missed in our archives upon your return. Either way, there is no way to HOLD your mail on our end. Please note that either of these methods requires that Sandi or I make the temporary changes manually. Therefore, I ask that this only be done if the period is to be of some moderate length and not merely for a day or two or as a minor convenience to the member. Individually, it's not a lot of work. So ask for it if you need it. It's just that we could be swamped if all 760+ of you ask for it every month because you will be out of town for a day or two. Thanks for asking and enjoy your vacation. We MUST keep politics off the Lists and maintain our focus on what we are here for - Navy Parenting. No politics, religion, or calls to action! Items of this nature will only dilute our mission. To assist you in this, I have installed a "Local" Search Engine on the Site Index so that if you can't find something in the actual indexed topics as they are listed, there is another way to find what you are looking for. When you can't locate a topic in the listed index, click on "Use our USNA-Net SEARCH Engine" near the top of the Index Page. Then type in the subject/topic that you are looking for and click on the "Search" button to its right. It may take a minute or two but if your topic is mentioned in any "text" somewhere on our site, you will be given the place on the site where the information is located just like at Yahoo or Excite or Alta Vista but ONLY for those pages that are actually on our site. Other pages that may be located at USNA or on other servers will not be included in the search results. Remember I said this was a 'local' search engine. For those of you that are already thinking about writing to ask about searching the archives, we are still working on a solution but it is complicated by the fact that the archives are restricted to members only and search engines do not work well behind a password structure. While there are still some technical details to work out, if there are enough of our members who would actually "tune in," we'd be willing to set it up. This WON'T be a "members only" broadcast, so anyone who may be interested could join us on that day by simply going to our website and clicking on the link provided. This even means that you could go to your local library and watch all 2 or 3 or 4 hours of the event as it happens. BUT... Since most of our '03 parents will actually be there and the '00 parents will be arriving for Commissioning Week about that time, Sandi and I aren't sure if there are enough of the rest of you who might be interested to make it worth the effort. Then there are the parents and future Plebes of the Class of '04 to consider who would probably watch out of curiosity. I can't ask the '04 Parents since only a handful are signed up so far. But I can ask you, our current membership. - Would having seen the event before your Plebe participated have been of any value? - Even though you don't have a Plebe this year, would you like to watch the event live? - Are there enough Grandparents, other relatives and/or friends who would be interested to make a good sized audience? You get the idea. I NEED YOUR INPUT, PLEASE. If you wish to discuss this on USNA-Family, please do. Otherwise, if you are interested, drop me an email at mzets@mail.com. Unless I hear from enough of you that you can't live without this, we will drop the idea. (PS. You may have received this virus via email and your computer may be infected. Please take the time to read this information. It is being sent to all of our members after having received a message about a virus called PrettyPark.exe that was sent to our list by one of our members. FIRST AND MOST IMPORTANT - Do not open any message that contains ANY attachments !!! (This is why attachments are forbidden on our lists - they can and sometimes do, contain harmful viruses like HAPPY99.exe and this new one called PrettyPark.exe) NEXT AND ALMOST AS IMPORTANT - Do not send VIRUS WARNINGS directly to our lists. More than half of all such warnings are NOT true and are about imaginary viruses. The sending of these false warnings to everyone in your address book in the well intended attempt to keep your friends from getting the "imaginary" virus clogs up the email system on a global scale like a huge chain letter. We realize that your first instinct is to warn everybody you know. Resist the urge and check it out first. Then selectively send the warning to those in your address book who may want or need to know. Don't send a warning to any USNA-Net lists. Instead, if you get a warning from someone about a possible virus, send it to your Moderators and ask that we check it out. If it's real and there is a potential for harm, we will advise our members as we are doing here. There is extensive information on our website about Viruses, both real and fake, in the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) page under "Virus Information." You can even use the links there to go to the official IBM website for "real' and "fake" viruses to get the full scoop and fix it if it's a real virus. To quote the IBM website... "To avoid [viruses], don't run programs that come in the mail, even from a friend, unless you are certain that they were sent intentionally by the apparent sender. We can't stress this enough!" I'd like to expand it even more... DON RUN PROGRAMS THAT COME IN THE MAIL. PERIOD. Your friend may not know that his/her machine has even been infected. The VIRUS may have sent itself to you from your friend's machine without his/her knowledge. PrettyPark.exe is a REAL VIRUS and running it will really screw up your computer. To see what to do about it and others visit our FAQs page and read through the Virus Information there and on the "real" and "fake" pages as well. Sorry about the length of this message. It's important that our membership and our lists be safe and virus free. On February 4th, 2000, in anticipation of the incoming rush of Class of '04 Plebe Parents, we restructured our lists by adding a NEW LIST called USNA-Family. It was well announced but it is evident that a number of you missed the notification and are asking why you haven't been getting any email. You may have missed the announcements because your email service as out of service or your mail box was full, etc. and we couldn't get the announcements through or whatever. Anyway, here's what happened. We started a NEW LIST called USNA-Family and put everyone that was on USNA-Plebe on that list on the first day of its existence. We then announced that USNA-Net was no longer to be used for general postings by our membership. ALL POSTING of a general nature (of interest to most members) was to be sent to USNA-Family. USNA-Plebe would be reserved strictly for "Plebe Related Issues" so that the incoming '04 Parents would have a place to ask all of those inevitable questions that most of us have already asked and answered last year. The cycle is about to repeat itself. You know... "What should I pack for I-Day? When will THE PNONE CALL come? Where do I send Mail? Where do I meet my Mid after swearing in?" The list goes on and on. We wanted to separate these messages from our general interest chat and so, created USNA-Family for the "chattier" messages (Sticky Chicken and such). If you do not belong to USNA-Family (you can tell because you have not gotten one of the dozen messages from USNA-Family in the past few days) and want to receive all of the "chat," please let me know that you want in and Sandi or I will subscribe you within the day. The general membership is restricted from posting to this list. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- "USNA-Family" The heart of our Listserver Community. It is used by our members to share general experiences, and happenings on the Yard. Discussions range from where to have dinner when in Annapolis to what to get a Mid for a birthday. Almost anything USNA related is fair game including recipes for 'Sticky Chicken', how to arrange for flights home, or tales of family visits. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- "USNA-Plebe" is a list strictly reserved for Plebe Families, Friends and interested Upper-Class Parent Mentors. Parents of Midshipmen of other classes may also wish to participate in USNA-Plebe thereby sharing their experiences, offering guidance, support, and helpful information to Plebe Parents, having walked in those shoes before. All new Plebe and Youngster Parent members are automatically subscribed to USNA-Family and USNA-Plebe. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- "USNA-Sports" is dedicated to Navy Sports, especially all of those Midshipmen Sports Activities that get little or no Press anywhere else such as Crew, Lacrosse and Light Weight Football. Navy Sports discussions are prohibited on the other lists. This list is a must for sports enthusiasts among our membership. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- "USNA-Club-Net" is a private list for Parents' Club Officers, Chairpersons, Newsletter Editors and Web Authors. I know that there are Moms and Dads that are subscribed separately and should be counted as 1 instead of 2 on our lists but there are not that many families with two addresses. So my question to the rest of the 600 is what is stopping you from sending in at least $10 ??? Is it that we don't supply enough services, value or information? Have you just put it off? Are you hoping that the rest will donate and you can slide? We know that money can be tight for some but I can't believe that you can't find the time to send in something. Even ten dollars would help. (That's only SIX CENTS per day including postage.) PLEASE send your check today. We need to carry our weight within the organization in order to continue to expand and grow this wonderful service in the coming year. The US Mail address is... West-Point.Org Inc. PO Box 2108 Abingdon VA 24212-2108 Please write "Navy - Class of xxxx" in the memo line of the check. OR Donate on-line through our SECURE SERVER at https://defender.west-point.org/donate/online Please Check your "Year Group" and "NAVY" on the form. Some interesting statistics, thus far... Class Amount Total # of Members Percent Participation 03 3,830 428 23.83% 02 860 178 15.73% 01 375 79 15.18% 00 260 61 9.83% 99 25 11 9.09% Other 1,560 42 ------- Totals 6,910 799 24.65% As you can see our Class of '03 has a whopping 23.83 Percent Participation of their 428 Total Members on our lists. They lead EVERY category at WP.ORG in Total Donated Dollars. A big thank you to '03 for your generosity. As you can see, the Class of '03 has the most members but they also have almost 1 in 4 donating. While the other classes are smaller in numbers, they have also have a smaller percentage of their class making donations. It drops off pretty quickly. Those of you that forgot to identify yourselves as belonging to a particular class when you made your donations, early on, have been identified and placed within the proper Class. But overall there are almost 600 of you that haven't donated. Please find a way to pick up your check book and send us something... $2 - $5 - $10 Every little bit helps. If the rest of you were to send in only $10 each , we could finish this fund raiser at almost $13,000 from NAVY Parents! What a great effort that would be. (As always, donations are strictly voluntary but we need the funding. Please help.) Please take the time to donate today.
