A recent post has prompted me to write. I do not wish to offend the member who made the post, as I am sure it was an honest mistake...but the post gives me a "foot in the door," so to speak..... Please remember our rules when you post to the Lists! The rules are in place for very good reasons. I won't go through the list and explain the whys of each rule...none of you need for me to do this, but I feel the necessity to clarify the rule against mentioning local Annapolis businesses. As much as it can be of benefit for you to know "inside" information concerning local businesses - we must prohibit this. There really is a good reason. We actually have members who own and operate businesses in Annapolis. One of the things that we make clear to them, when they become members, is that they are to ***never*** mention their business in a post to the Lists. We have members who operate Care Package services, we have members who operate B&B's and may even have members who work for or run local restaurants. They know that if they mention their business they can be removed from the Lists. They abide by this rule. Think about it. You own a B&B and you see a post that mentions a vacancy for the weekend at a competitor's B&B. YOUR own B&B has a vacancy as well, yet you are forbidden to post this information to the Lists. Your competitor gets what amounts to free advertising (and may fill their vacancy) while you are left with a vacancy that you might have filled with a quick post to the Lists. When it benefits a local establishment (non-USNA) it is strictly forbidden to mention it on the Lists. We are not here to help the local businesses, we are NOT here to provide free advertising, we are here to help USNA parents become better USNA parents. Thanks for taking the time to read this. If you have any question about a post, please send it directly to Mike or me and we will tell you if it is okay. We do NOT see the posts before they go to the Lists, so we cannot stop a post with a rules violation. We can only do clean-up after the fact. For reasons that are too complicated to explain here, we will not be able to bring this event to you via the Internet. We will, however, do everything in our power to get the tech glitches worked out in time for next year. There are other events that we might be able to broadcast between then and now and would like your suggestions. Since Sandi and I live in Ohio, we can't just drop in at the Yard any Olli time but plan on visiting for various events (I-Day especially)and perhaps one of these dates will hit the mark for broadcast. To all of those that I'm disappointing with this news, I'm truly sorry. We tried but it just won't happen this year. A note of interest... The local Public Access Channel in Annapolis telecasts the event live but it is only viewable from those connected to the local cable system. This does include most of the local hotels. So if you're attending, pack along your VCR and tape it in your room while you're at the event. Get a new six hour tape (It might take that long... :>) ) and record a souvenir for the folks back home to see upon your return. A reminder of the proper Netiquette (and our Rules of Operation) involved in some of our most recent posts on various lists... I had a recent request on USNA-Family for more postings about coming events. The posting was entirely proper on Family since it was a general request dealing with all sorts of coming events. However, I must remind our membership that ALL postings concerning "sports" MUST be placed AND answered on USNA-Sports. I only mention this since the original message used sports (Judo, etc.) as examples of coming events for which information is difficult to obtain and which should be shared among our membership. Next, (and the real reason for this message)... To those unknown members who took it upon themselves to write to Joyce PRIVATELY expressing concern about the Cess Pool reference... First, the reference was a "quote" from a Mid and not her words. I feel that she adequately explained that fact in her follow up note. But, more importantly, as a condition of membership you are required to abide by our Rules of Operation which say... "5. Rights to Privacy Information and/or the contents of email posted on any of our lists is private..." In other words, you may not use or make reference to these postings for any purpose outside of our USNA-Net lists for ANY reason. The contents of ALL messages is intended for you and you alone as a member. Taking information received from our lists (which may or MAY NOT be accurate) and then using this information to intervene on behalf of Midshipmen with the authorities at the Academy is not only foolhardy but may, in fact, actually cause trouble for the Mid whose parents made the complaint. Furthermore, running to the Academy with complaints about the treatment of a Mid (or anything else for that matter) and quoting USNA-Net as a source of that information will cause certain damage to our reputation in the eyes of the Academy. We continue to do everything in our power to insure that USNA-Net maintains the highest standards of conduct among our membership and is a constant source of support for parents. If members take wild stories, out of context, in a panic to the Academy, we will be viewed as "those crazy parents" and dismissed without regard to the real help and support that we provide. If the Academy and the Alumni Association is to ever seriously consider us as a true asset to their operations, we must conduct ourselves in a manner that is beyond reproach. To all of our members who have not yet come to grips with the facts... Your son or daughter is "IN THE NAVY" first and attending the Academy second. They swore an oath of allegiance and signed a contract that is legal and binding. Refusal to follow orders is a violation of the Uniform Code of Military Justice. When your Mid is told to fight on a log over a pool of muddy water, he/she does not have a choice. AND, you have nothing to say about it !!! Those are the facts. The sooner you learn this lesson, the sooner YOU will be able to cope with the USNA. Sorry if I sound a little harsh, but if you understand this one basic fact, you will have a lot less trouble with the realities of life at the Yard. After all, it ain't that bad... A top notch education in four years - The opportunity to travel and study around the world - Adventures that can only be dreamed of by their civilian counterparts (Didn't they love hanging from a helicopter last fall?) - You get the point. Keep those postings coming... Please don't use the subscription form. It just confuses us in thinking that you are a new member. ALSO, there will be many of you that will wish to leave USNA-Plebe at the end of the A/C year. First, let me say that the '03 Parents are encouraged to remain on USNA-Plebe and help the '04 Parents through the Plebe experience. Without Upper Class Mentors the Plebe list will suffer. But, if you wish to unsubscribe from USNA-Plebe you can help us greatly if you do it directly yourself by sending a simple (PLAIN TEXT) message to: majordomo@navy-usna.org with the following line of text in the body of the message (No subject is needed.): unsubscribe usna-plebe In this way, Sandi and I will not have to do it for you and, believe me, this will drastically cut down on the paper work for us through the summer.
