Requests from members have prompted an experiment. Beginning immediately, you now have your own PRIVATE chat room in which to meet with other USNA-Net members! We will allow all of you to try it out and see what you think. If it goes over well with members, it will become a permanent part of our website. If not... Oh well, we tried. Some of our members thought that having a chat room would allow our members to discuss things at greater length and allow for back-and-forth exchanges when questions get complicated and answers demand more interaction. It will also allow "toll-free" communications between members that would otherwise not want the long distance phone bills. Here is how to find and use it.... Go to our web site at www.navy-usna.org. Click on "Archives" in the main menu on the left of the main page. Click on "USNA-Net Archives" on the next page that comes up. You will be required to enter your User Name and Password. Do so. Look down the list of entries in the USNA-Net Archives for "Enter_Chat_Room" and click on that. On the next screen, click on the "Click here to enter" icon. Then enter your name and email address as asked and Enter the Chat room. Detail instructions on how it works are available under "Help" in the top menu of the Room or by clicking on the "Click here for help" banner at the top of the room. It's not as hard as it sounds but we couldn't make it really easy in order to provide the required SECURITY for our members. The way it's set up, ONLY USNA-Net Members are able to access the chat room because it is behind our password protected firewall that only valid members may access via their password. Now the GOOD NEWS... The use of the room will largely be unsupervised and except for good manners and good taste, there are no specific rules. All members may use the Chat Room(s) but PLEASE DO NOT allow non-members to have access to this facility. Like all Internet based Chat Rooms, ours may be broken up into private chat rooms or used like one big family gathering. Read the Help for instructions on setting up Private Chat Rooms. One last thing... DO NOT USE OUR USNA-NET LISTS TO INVITE OTHER MEMBERS TO JOIN YOU IN THE CHAT ROOMS! Let's keep these things separate. If you want to meet someone in the chat room, communicate that by PRIVATE EMAIL. Please use the facility. Please don't abuse the facility. We're ALL on the Honor Concept here. There are 72 on the site even though Elsburgh supplied about 30 more. We just didn't have room for them all. Each of the images is hidden behind a thumbnail (smaller rendition of the same photo) so that to see the larger rendition you have to click on the thumbnail photo. While the larger photos are of very good quality, Sandi and I couldn't do justice to the actual photos that Elsburgh took. Computer whizzes delete this message - Newbies read on... ============================================= TECH NOTE - Two important issues for AOL Users that are part of our net... 1) When you installed your AOL software, it came with many options or preferences set at the factory. These are called the DEFAULT settings. All of them can be changed by the user but most users don't know this. One DEFAULT setting deals with Graphics Compression. This is tech-speak for a process that makes images such as pictures take less time to download to your computer when you view an image on a web page. While it speeds up the time it takes to present the image, it seriously degrades the image quality that you finally see when the image is displayed. AOL's Compression routines cause an image to become much more grainy and less sharp than the actual image that the web designer used. You can set this DEFAULT setting "off" by going into "My AOL' and selecting "Preferences." Find a check box that says "Use Graphic Compression" and make sure that option is set to NOT use compression. Then, when you view the Sea Trial Pics, your graphic images will be as sharp and clear as they are for members who do not use AOL. 2.) Whether you realize it or not, the average web page is NOT as small as the DEFAULT window size in your AOL browser. It is MUCH bigger. When you view a web site using AOL's web browser, you are seeing about 1/4 of the actual page at one time. You have to use scroll bars to move the page around in order to see the whole thing. To quote the AOL Webmaster's Style Guide, "AOL Standard web forms are 632 x 337 pixels in size." This is the number of colored dots (pixels) that may be viewed across and vertically inside the AOL browser window. Most web pages are designed for 800 WIDE x 600 HIGH !!! Which means that you only see 44.4% of the average web page without having to scroll when you use the AOL browser !!! There is a way around this limitation. Almost every PC with Windows95/98 installed also comes with MicroSoft Internet Explorer (MSIE) preinstalled also. After you sign on to AOL and have read your email, you can minimize the AOL program (by clicking on the little minus sign in the extreme upper right corner of the screen) and then launch MSIE. The big blue "e" will either be on your desktop or you can find Internet Explorer in your "Start" menu under "Programs" MSIE will use your AOL connection to browse the Web and give you at least 800 x 600 pixel resolution. When you are done browsing, simply exit MSIE (by clicking on the "X" in the upper right corner of the screen) and go back to AOL (by right clicking on the AOL title in the system tray at the bottom of the screen and selecting "Restore." It's simple to do and will eliminate the compression that AOL uses for graphics as a side benefit of using MSIE. ============================================= Please note that I know "I" am violating the rule that "ALL messages must relate to Navy Parenting" but I feel there is good reason. USNA-FAMILY - If you received this message and haven't gotten anything else for quite a while, chances are that you didn't request to be included in USNA-Family when it replaced USNA-Net at the beginning of February. If you wish to participate in the wonderful conversations and sharing of information that occurs everyday on USNA-Family, please let us know and we'll add you immediately. USNA-NET - This list has become a downward information channel ONLY. Members who belong to this list MAY NOT post messages to it. The USNA-Net List is reserved for Moderator use only. Please post messages of general interest to all Parents on USNA-Family. OUR NEW CHAT ROOM - Our newest and most favorite feature seems to be the new chat room. So much so that we seem to be overloading the system. If you've had trouble getting into the room, it's because it will only handle five (5) participants at a time. More than that makes the conversations too hard to follow. So if you go and can't get in, try back in a few minutes. Last night, we had over 130 hits on the entrance page in two hours. The most usage comes between 2000 and midnight EDT. Try earlier or later to get in. You can also email your USNA-Net friends (PRIVATELY) to join you at an appointed day and time. That way you're sure to talk to the people you care to, at a time that is convenient for them as well. UNSUBSCRIBING - If you wish to unsubscribe from a list, you could help Sandi and me tremendously by doing it yourself. Send a message, FROM the email address under which you are subscribed, TO: majordomo@navy-usna.org No subject is needed. In the BODY of the text you need to write the following line: unsubscribe usna-plebe OR unsubscribe usna-sports etc. That's all there is to it and you will receive a confirmation that you have been removed from that list. Please do not unsubscribe from USNA-Family or USNA-Net unless you intend to leave ALL of our Lists. SITE INDEXES and SEARCH ENGINES - Both our USNA-Net and the Academy web sites have extensive Site Indexes and a Search Engine to help you locate information quickly on either site. Please consult the web sites and these very useful tools BEFORE you ask for schedules, telephone numbers or other such simple information from our members via the lists. We are not Directory Information or AT&T's "Dial 0-0." Please try to look it up yourself and then ask for assistance. We're ALL glad to help but a tremendous amount of information is just a couple of mouse clicks away. Our site's Search Engine is at the bottom of the Site Index page and will return every page that contains the search criteria you ask for. Try entering "Care Packages" and you will come up with seven pages where it is talked about. Try "Herndon" and you'll find 10 pages where it is referenced. E-MAIL RETURN ADDRESSES - Please remember to SEND your e-mail from the SAME ADDRESS that you are subscribed under. Even though you are a member, sending a message from your office or some other computer or e-mail identity is not permitted and your message WILL NOT GO THROUGH ! Instead, it will bounce to your Moderators as a "Non-member Submission" and we will have to resend it or toss it and ask you to resend it. SCHOOL OR WORK BASED E-MAIL ADDRESSES - As the school year ends, a number of you will not be around to get email during the summer recess if you are subscribed from your school or university account. Please advise us if there will be a need to change your address during the summer. See below for details. CHANGE OF ADDRESS - If you need to change your address, just send us a note and tell us the OLD address AND the NEW address WHEN THE CHANGE HAPPENS. Please don't tell us weeks in advance and ask that we remember to do it later. We're too old to remember beyond tomorrow. :>) EMPTY YOUR MAIL BOXES - Please remember to read your email OFTEN. Some systems like WebTV and the free services like YAHOO and HOTMAIL don't allow too many messages to remain in your mailbox for long. When a mailbox fills up, you stop getting messages and I begin getting notices that your mailbox is full. I get at least two messages for each message that cannot be delivered... One telling me that your box is full and the they will continue to try for X days AND another telling me that they could not deliver even after trying for X Days. As your moderator, I get over 200 messages each day about this sort of thing. If you could visit your email at least every other day, this stuff would slow way down and you know what they say... A happy Moderator is a very good thing to have! That's it for now. Thanks for your help and see you at Buddy's. Computer whizzes delete this message - Newbies read on... ============================================= TECH NOTE - You'll want to print this out BEFORE you attempt to make the changes listed below. If you use MicroSoft's Outlook or Outlook Express you may not know about one of its greatest features... PRE-SORTING OF INBOUND EMAIL USING MESSAGE RULES... Every time Outlook Express (OE) finds mail in my server's mailbox for me, it downloads the mail and presents it to me already PRE-SORTED into a variety of separate folders in my mailbox so that I can read the important stuff right away and leave the ordinary stuff till later. I have a separate folder for USNA-Net, Family, Plebe, Subscription Requests, Delivery Problems and lots more. Now ,when a message come in that is received from USNA-Family it shows up in my "Family" inbox. This keeps my personal email separate from the net-generated stuff and makes my life a whole lot simpler. It might seem like a lot of clicking but once you've got it done, you'll never want to do it any other way again. Ever! Here's how it's done. First, we set up OE to show the Folders "tree" on the left side of the screen, so that you can see what mail has come in where... In the Main Menu at the top of the screen, Click on VIEW then LAYOUT. In BASIC, check the following boxes: FOLDER LIST, STATUS BAR and TOOLBAR. In PREVIEW PANE, check SHOW PREVIEW PANE, BELOW MESSAGES and SHOW PREVIEW PANE HEADER. Then click OK. OE will then show three basic blocks of information when you go looking for email. Along the left side will be a FOLDERS area, at the top right will be the list of received messages and on the right, bottom will be a preview pane for those messages. In the FOLDERS area, you should at least see Local Folders, Inbox, Outbox, Sent Items, Drafts and Deleted Items. Click ONCE on INBOX so that it is highlighted. Go to the top Main Menu and click on FILE. Then on NEW and then FOLDER. In the Window that opens, type USNA-Net and click OK. In the FOLDER area, you should now see that INBOX has a sub-folder called "UNSA-Net" You now have a separate place to store your Navy mail when it comes in. All that's left to do is instruct OE which inbound mail to stick in there. That's what Message Rules are for. Let's create a new message rule to use when OE encounters an inbound message from our lists. In the List of messages at the top right of the OE screen, click on this message (or any message from our lists) to highlight it if it isn't already highlighted. Then in the main menu at the top of the screen, Click on MESSAGE and then CREATE RULE FROM MESSAGE. You will be presented with a new window with three large white boxes and a single white line box at the bottom. Go to that single line at the bottom and NAME the Rule something besides "New Mail Rule #1" Try "USNA-Net." Then in the top white box (1. Select the Conditions for your rule), let's define how the rule will recognize the inbound mail messages that you want to sort into your new USNA-Net Folder. UNCHECK the "Where the From line contains people". Then check the box next to WHERE THE TO LINE CONTAINS PEOPLE. This should be the ONLY box that is checked. In the middle white box (2. Select actions for your rule), check the MOVE IT TO THE SPECIFIED FOLDER. Now look at the lower white box (3. Rule description. Click on an underlined value to edit it). It should have a rule definition in it that says, Apply this rule after the message arrives Where the To line "contains people" Move it to the "specified" folder. Click on "contains people" and you will be presented with a new window to add additional names. Add the following names for our lists in the white box at the top and press "Add" after each name is entered... usna-net@navy-usna.org usna-family@navy-usna.org usna-plebe@navy-usna.org usna-sports@navy-usna.org Then Click on "specified" folder and when the window opens up with a list of your folders, click on the new USNA-Net folder that you created above. Then Click on APPLY and OK and YOU'RE DONE. Every message that come in addressed solely to our lists will automatically be placed in the new USNA-Net folder and kept totally separate from all of the rest of your mail. On occasion, a member sends a message to our lists as a "CC' or as a second addressee. These will still end up in your Inbox but the vast majority of your inbound mail from USNA-Net will be sorted out automatically. Now that you know how it's done, you can set up separate folders for your Mid's email, your work stuff or any email that you need to keep separated. It's really handy and takes so little time. There are ways to accomplish this same thing in AOL's dedicated email program as well as Netscape Communicator. If you use one of these, (now that you know that the facility is there) look around in your email program and find the place to do it there. If you have questions, let me know and I will try to assist. ============================================= Please note that I know "I" am violating the rule that "ALL messages must relate to Navy Parenting" but I feel there is good reason. That night you will be able to watch the meeting live over the InterNet !!! It's all set up with Buddy's and I will set up my WebCam somewhere inside the meeting room to catch the view of the crowd. The image will update every 30 seconds (not quite live broadcast quality but good enough to give you all a good idea of what's going on.) Here's how to visit the camera web site... Go to our main Web Site at www.navy-usna.org and click on "2nd Annual USNA-Net Meeting Details" in the middle of the main page. When you get to that second page, click on the "HERE" in the line "Click HERE for a LIVE VIEW of the Meeting in Progress !" You can try it out NOW, so if there are any questions, you can ask me today through Wednesday. Sandi and I will be a bit busy to help DURING the meeting. The WebCam is operational now but is showing a view outside our apartment in Westlake, OH. On the night of the meeting it will be pushing pictures of the ACTUAL MEETING IN PROGRESS! So, for those that can't join us "in the flesh", you can at least watch the event as it unfolds. If you want to capture a few pictures for your own fun, you can click on the "Still Image" link and then capture the current still image by right clicking on the image and "Save Image As" to your hard drive. This should be fun. Who says that we don't think of all of you in everything we do??? See you all at Buddy's! (It means just a little more now. Doesn't it?) It's the first of many such Class lists to follow, I'm sure. We have forged many friendships and bonds within the USNA-Net community and I for one am not willing to abandon them just because our sons or daughters are moving on to the next step in THEIR lives. Our dreams and inherent pride will not be diminished by Commissioning. As '00 Parents, Sandi and I wanted to see our community continue as our Mids become Ensigns and scatter (ShotGun?) into the Fleet. As a result, WP.Org has graciously agreed to form a NEW LIST to allow us "old-timers" to continue to share experiences and advice as our Mids launch their new careers. Stay tuned for additional details. I've been promised that the list will be available by the end of this weekend but with Sandi and I at Annapolis, it may have to wait for its official launching until after we return. Having gotten back home from the '00 Commissioning, we've been sorting through the messages and cleaning up our files. Several things need to be mentioned (In NO particular order)... LIST MEMBERSHIP - If this is the only message that you have received in weeks, you are ONLY subscribed to USNA-Net. You should be included in USNA-Family but have dropped through the cracks when Family was initiated in February. Please let us know if you wish to continue to participate or if you wish to be removed completely from our membership. '00 PARENTS - Our USNA-00 Listserver will be operational in just a few days. Please stay tuned for details. Now that Commissioning is complete, Sandi and I really want you to STAY with us. Our members on Family and Plebe still need your experience and advice. RTF - Many of your are falling into the trap of sending in Rich Text Format (RTF). Please make sure that your email program's preferences are set to send in Plain Text (ASCII). A full explanation of what RTF is and how to fix YOUR problem is discussed on our web site's Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) in the main menu at www.navy-usna.org. If one of your recent postings was missing its signature line at the bottom it was because you sent it in RTF. It really messes up our archives and prevents some members from reading your postings. WRAPPED URLs - Once in a while a member posts a message and provides a web address (URL) for a site of interest to other members. If the URL is very long it will wrap to the next line in your email message. Please remember to "cut and paste" the entire address (both lines) when you are using your browser to visit the site. If you don't, you will probably not get to the site mentioned. FAMILY & PLEBE LISTERVERS - All of you are members of USNA-Family. If your are considering leaving USNA-Plebe, you DO NOT have to request to be added to USNA-Family. You are already a member. Look at the "TO" Address of the messages that you get every day. Some come from "usna-family" and others from "usna-plebe." Just remember to PLEASE keep Plebe issues on USNA-Plebe. MY JOB - Lately, a few well intended members have taken it upon themselves to act as MODERATOR to our lists by telling other members, either privately or via the lists, about what should or should not be posted, etc. THAT IS MY JOB AS MODERATOR! It is NEVER acceptable for a member to send a public or private note correcting or criticizing another's post!! Please do not take offense, but if I find members doing this again, they will be removed from our lists. No "member" is ever to reprimand another member for rules violations. Even well intended "instructions" should be handled by your Moderators. Bring problems to our attention and Sandi or I will deal with the problem, off-net and in private. RIDE SHARES - As handy and convenient as these requests may seem, they really do NOT support our mission and are a violation of our rule that all messages MUST pertain to Navy Parenting. A s such, please refrain from asking for Ride Shares or DONATED transportation. Believe it or not, Mom or Dad, your Mid is quite capable of arranging his/her OWN solutions to transportation problems. CELL PHONES AND OTHER SERVICES, ETC. Again, these matters are not directly related to Navy Parenting. They have been discussed ad infinitum on our lists and are available in our archives for those who are truly interested. Quite frankly, too many members think that we are an extension of the Home Shopping Network and it's beginning to dilute our true mission here. Let's all take a deep breath and get back on track with issues that CANNOT be found elsewhere on the Internet. UNSUBSCRIBING - If you find that you no longer want or need to be included on a certain list, please visit our web site's FAQs and look for instructions on Unsubscribing (under Majordomo) or send a PRIVATE request to your Moderators. In an effort to make the USNA-Net Web Site even easier and cleaner to use, I have revised and updated the "Search" feature on our site. I placed a link to "Search" in the Main Menu (at the top) and revised the engine so that there are no more banner ads, etc.in the search results. Hope this helps make finding information faster and easier for all of our members. Remember to look to the web site for information BEFORE you ask our members. Also, don't forget the archives as a rich source of info. HINT: Look to the archives for a year ago for loads of the same questions (and answers) that you might have this year. It concerns the "Fourth Class" (or Plebe year) and he explains how all the things that they had to do - that seemed, at the time to be utter nonsense, finally, made sense to him. I believe this is a must read for any Plebe-to-be or their parents. I had a request this morning to broadcast this article to the List once again. I decided to add this article to the "Family Interests" page of the Website. It is now a permanent fixture. When we first read this, Mike sent a note to the Major and asked his permission to use it on our Listserver. He wrote back telling Mike that he would be honored. Out of respect for Major Friesen and West Point, I did not use my USNA background that we use for USNA-Net. Instead, I have placed this article on a "West Point" background that I created when Mike and I were part of the team working on WP-ORG's West Point Bicentennial page. (We were the ONLY Navy people in this group of WP grads and parents. It was a real Hoot!!) To find "The Fourth Class System," simply go to our website: www.navy-usna.org and click on "Family Interests" in the menu items on the left. You will find the link to this page at the top. Enjoy.
