I made a Moderator "executive" decision concerning all of the changes in
Company numbers. With so many Mids changing companies, and the fact that I
have to change them in 2 to 5 different lists for every member whose Mid has
changed companies...

I have removed the reference to company number from the signature line for
EVERYONE. If there are no company numbers there is no need to go in and
change them. This will be a permanent "solution" since it looks as though
the Academy will be shuffling or shotgunning every year.

This makes it even more important for you to sign your posts to the lists
with your Midshipman's Company number. It will be the only way that anyone
can find out who may be in the same company as their Mid.

So, please, when you sign your name to your posts, do it like this:

Sandi Zets
Michael - 00 - 10th company

Please remember to add your hometown, as well!!!

To our wonderful Navy Family....

WOW! It just keeps getting better!

This morning's Cleveland Plain Dealer (Ohio's largest daily newspaper) has
selected USNA-Net's Web Site as this year's #1 Winning Web Site in it's
annual search for the best non-commercial web sites with local origins.

Sandi and I were notified during Commissioning Week that we had been
selected to be in the top 10 but this morning's paper ran almost a full half
page (above the fold) featuring USNA-Net as its premier site in the PD's
Personal Tech Section, the weekly PD feature on Internet and technology
news.

A full color screen shot of our Main Web Page was surrounded with a
description of the site, a bio of Sandi and I and a description of what the
site does, why it exists and our tips for other webmasters in the creation
and maintenance of this sort of web site.

We just thought you'd like to know that *YOUR* USNA-Net web site is the best
of its kind.

Along with the honor of being #1 came the knowledge and recognition that we
have all of you to thank for driving the site to be what it is... "A
storehouse of information for parents of Naval Academy students." according
to the PD.

Since most of you will not get a copy of today's PD, Sandi and I will scan
the article and post it up for all of you to read later this week.

Thanks again for making this honor possible.

To all,

Following a request from a USNA-Family member and after about two months of
creative work and getting things to be the right size and all, Sandi has put
together a collection of 15 Naval Academy Images to use as Wallpaper on your
PC.

Each of the 15 images is available in three resolutions to fill the entire
desktop on your Windows 95/98/NT systems.

To view and download them, visit your USNA-Net web site at www.navy-usna.org
and click on "Family Interests" in the Main Menu. The Wallpaper is the
first item on the list on that page.

Find one that you like and click on your resolution size below the image. A
full size image will appear after it downloads. This may take a few minutes
for the large images and with slower modems. (The largest image took 40
seconds on my 56K modem.)

Once the image is fully displayed, RIGHT click your mouse on the image and
select "Set as Wallpaper" from the pop up menu. That's it. The next time
you see your Desktop, it will be the image you selected. Some systems may
not show the wallpaper until after you've started your computer the next
time.

Each time you go to the wallpaper page, our little Wallpaper "Wizard"
reports on what resolution your computer is currently set to, so that you
know which size image to select. (Clever, no?) When the box opens, just
click "OK" to get it to go away.

Again, These are free for your use and are offered with Sandi's
compliments. Some of us just can't get enough USNA! Enjoy.

To All Navy Listserver members...

For the past four days our email system has been experiencing minor to MAJOR
difficulties. These problems seem to have been cleared up but what is now
happening is that messages that were reported to the sender as
"Undeliverable" are now flushing through the system.

Please be aware that some members sent the same message again because it
appeared that the first one did not go through. In a few cases, I relayed
the message at the request of the sender. Just sit back and take it easy as
you open your email.

You will find duplicates. Just delete them.

Hopefully this is all over and done with.

Sorry about the inconvenience. It wasn't our fault. Let's just say the
email gremlins were at work.

To all...

GREAT NEWS for those of you that have always wanted to but could never find
what you were looking for in our archives...

Because of member generosity during our last fund-raiser, WP.Org has had the
resources to design and implement a SEARCH ENGINE for our collective
archives.

You can now search usna-plebe for all references to "Hospital" and come up
with 31 messages that refer to that word. Any word or phrase is searchable
in any of our archives.

Each Archive must be searched independently but that is a small price to pay
for the ability to search for a reference.

PLEASE DO NOT INPUT A QUESTION ! Our search engine does not understand
sentences. It just searches all messages for certain words. So be
specific.

It also highlights the occurrence of the search word in the message to be
even more helpful.

To search, just click on "Archives" in our main menu and READ THE
INSTRUCTIONS for searching BEFORE you attempt to use the facility. It might
be somewhat confusing but it really works well once you get the hang of how
it works.

Searching is a TWO STEP process...

On the first screen, you will be required to tell the search engine
"which" list you want to search. Enter the Listserver name in lowercase as
in usna-family or usna-plebe, etc.
You will be asked for a user name and password. They are the same as
the archive passwords:
        username: brigade
        password: submarine (all lowercase)

On the second screen, enter your search word(s). You do not have to
specify an order for the results unless you don't want them in the default
order of latest first- oldest last. So just ignore the selection buttons
below the place you type in the search word(s). You can also specify the
number of responses per page of search results. The default is twenty per
page. If more than 20 messages are returned as search results, you can view
the others by clicking on the [2] or [3], etc. at the bottom of the first
page.

This is simpler than using Yahoo or Excite search engines but the results
are not rated for relevance. They're just listed.

You'll get the hang of it quickly. Enjoy.

PS. We are currently having some difficulty with usna-family and it may or
may not be working but all of the others are working fine. The fix is in
process. I didn't want to wait until it's fixed to share the news with all
of you.

PPS. You must have cookies "enabled" for any of this to work.

To All...

Reviewing the weekly report on the topics searched for in our Site Index's
Search Engine leads me to believe there is some misunderstanding about our
TWO Search Engines.

1.) The Search Engine on the SITE INDEX searches OUR WEB SITE ONLY. It
will return results on search words that are found on a page on the site.
So if you search for Handbook, you will be told that there are 16 different
places in our web site that "Handbook" is mentioned and will list them all.

2.) The Search Engine in our ARCHIVES searches our Archive of USNA-Net
messages ONLY.

These TWO areas of our service are totally separate and one search engine
will not access both of them. You can't look for messages on the Site Index
any more than you can look up a telephone number in the dictionary. Each
Search Engine is designed for different things.

So... If you're looking for a member's posting about Hospital Point from
last summer, use the ARCHIVE's Search Engine. If you're looking for members
(by way of searching on their name or email address), that's in the
ARCHIVEs. Remember that the ARCHIVEs are for members only. You'll need
your User Name and Password to access the Archives and that Search Engine.

If you want to know where some piece of information is on our Web Site, use
the SITE INDEX or its Search Engine. The SITE INDEX Search Engine is a part
of our Web Site that is open to the general public and therefore is not
Password Protected.

I hope this helps you to look for things where they are to be found.

Lastly, the terms "web site" and "listserver" are NOT synonymous. The Web
Site is comprised of the web pages that are found at www.navy-usna.org.
That's where the Rules of Operation, Family Interest Page and the Photo
Gallery, etc. are located and can be viewed by using your browser.

Our Lists (Listservers) are strictly email messages and the associated
Archives of those messages. Please don't confuse the two.

To all...

Good news. As of yesterday, USNA-Net subscribed its 1,000th member. In
fact, we subscribed nine members and as of this morning we are at 1,008
member families. Since the vast majority of those subscriptions are "Mr.
and Mrs." our actual body count is actually more like 1,750 individuals.

The vast majority of our "new" members are Class of '04 and I would
especially like to extend big WELCOME ABOARD! to all of them. You will find
our service to be a huge help in the coming months (and years). We like to
think of each of you as extended family members (except that we won't loan
you money.) :>)

To those members that have been with us for a while and know the value of
being a member of USNA-Net, PLEASE DO WHAT YOU CAN TO REACH AND RECRUIT
OTHER USNA FAMILIES TO JOIN OUR LISTSERVERS!

We're the best kept secret at USNA. You almost all belong to Parents'
Clubs. Get the other members, especially the incoming '04 members, to join.
Wear your Red, White and Blue ribbons behind your Club name tags to every
function... Meetings, I-Day, PPW, etc. When asked what those are for, tell
them about us and give them our web site address (URL) - www.navy-usna.org.

Even with over 1,000 Families signed up, we still make up only about 1 out
of 4 of the Families who have Midshipmen at the Yard. Think about it... 3
out of every 4 Parents with Mids DON'T belong to our listservers; have
probably never visited our web site; and most importantly, are out there
alone without our help and support.

'03 Parents - Think about how much more you know and how much better you
have been able to "be there" for your Mid because of your participation in
our Lists for the last year. Get those new '04 Parents signed up now, even
if you have to drag them to a computer terminal and make them do it while
you watch. :>)

'04 Parents - While you're new to us, it will become apparent quickly that
this is a terrific service. Wear those Red, White and Blue Ribbons (now a
traditional part of our members' wardrobe) to I-Day and Club Meetings. Let
everyone know just what a great thing USNA-Net is and how they are missing
gobs of information if they don't belong...not to mention the SUPPORT that
will come over the coming year.

I'm only saying all of this to encourage all of you to do something for your
fellow Parents. Sandi and I can only help this all to happen. You're the
ones who write and share. And YOU'RE THE ONES THAT HAVE THE ABILITY TO
REACH OTHER PARENTS. In February of last year (when we became Moderators)
there were less than 100 members! Look what you've done in a little over a
year. Keep up the good work and get those other Parents to join soon. I've
heard too many of you lament... "If only I'd have known about USNA-Net
during my Mid's Plebe Summer!" Now's your chance to fix that for another
parent... to get them signed up before it's too late. Remember, it FREE!

To all...

A member has made us aware of a new email borne virus that is sweeping the
country. PLEASE DO NOT OPEN ANY ATTACHMENTS TO EMAIL! Our rules specify
that members are not to send or open attachments to email on our list and
this is the reason. Viruses may be transmitted via email attachments.
PERIOD.

The Symantic Anti-virus Research Center warns...

"VBS.Stages.A
This worm appears as an attachment titled LIFE_STAGES.TXT.SHS. Execution of
this attachment will open a text file in Notepad displaying the male and
female stages of life. Whilst the user is reading the text file the script
is executing in the background. This worm spreads itself using Outlook, ICQ,
mIRC and PIRCH. SARC suggests that corporate customers configure their email
filtering systems to filter out or stop all incoming emails that have
attachments with .SHS extensions. "

If you suspect you have received or been infected with this virus, please
see

http://www.sarc.com/avcenter/venc/data/vbs.stages.a.html

for information and disinfection procedures.

To all,

I know that Mike has told you about the Search Engine for the Archives.
This is a wonderful program that many of you have been requesting for
months. It is just great!! I don't know about you, but I find I really
need to be told something more than once for it to "stick," so this is why I
am writing.

It is SO EASY TO USE!!

You go to the website: www.navy-usna.org click onto "Archives" in the
menu items on the left of the page, and there it is.

Actually the page has links to take you directly to the Archives (you will
find these on the left side of the page), or a link to take you to the
Search Engine. Mike and I worked on the page this morning to make this
feature stand out - we have placed a yellow background on the right side of
the page - and I think it looks better!!

FIRST read the simple instructions. The MOST important thing to remember is
to put the name of the list that you want IN LOWER CASE - this search engine
is case sensitive. So, it MUST be: usna-net, usna-family, usna-plebe,
usna-sports...

You will be asked to supply a Username (brigade) and Password (submarine)
and a page will open where you can put in what you want to look for.

I searched this morning in the Plebe list for "care packages" and the search
engine found 137 emails that mention this. All you need to do is click onto
the underlined subject of the email in the list that comes up and that email
will open for you. Hit your back button to return to the list. You can put
names or specific words ...anything, and the email will have the "words"
you searched for highlighted in red in the body of the text.

Is this great, or what??

Please take a few minutes to try this out...it's only beneficial if it is
used.

And to all you Plebe parents...please remember to read the USNA-Net Parents'
Handbook which is filled to overflowing with good advice and information.

To all...

This morning we received a message from one of our members that contained
the LIFE _STAGES.TXT.SHS VIRUS as an attachment.

If you receive ANY email that has an attachment, DO NOT OPEN THE
ATTACHMENT!!! IT WILL INFECT YOUR COMPUTER.

This is why attachments are forbidden on our lists.

Our server also received a copy of this virus from this same member BUT
filtered it and did not become infected. It did NOT transmit the message to
USNA-Family but the virus attempted to send itself to everyone!

You should be aware that you may be on this members email address list and
have received a copy of the virus independently from our listserver
facility.

If you suspect you have received or been infected with this virus, please
see

http://www.sarc.com/avcenter/venc/data/vbs.stages.a.html

for information and disinfection procedures.

To our dear USNA-Net family...

As one member said it so well a few days ago...

"PLEASE take the time and make a conscious effort to respond on the Net
(unless, of course, it is truly very private). That will make the Net what
it is truly meant to be: a help for ALL."

Your answers that go ONLY to an individual, most often, would truly benefit
the entire group. Try to remember to send your responses via the Lists
rather than to JUST the individual.

A Message from your Moderators
==========================

To all...

With membership growing at the rate of about 10 new members per day, I
thought I'd pass on a few things to remember...

It takes a little TIME to process and mail out all those messages each time
you click on the send button. Please be patient if you don't see your
message pop up instantly in your inbox. Messages are sent to the list in
Alphabetical order so some of you will not see your message come back for as
much as a half an hour or more. (Unless you are notified that there was a
delivery problem, rest assured that it will go to everyone on the list.)

Also with so many members, PLEASE be sure to send your message to the
CORRECT list. All Plebe stuff belongs on USNA-Plebe. This is our most
abused rule and it's just a matter of being careful when you address your
message. Remember that more than half of USNA-Plebe is made up of
Upper-class Mentors. So, there are plenty of us on this list to answer your
questions. You don't have to send your questions to USNA-Family to reach
the Upper-class Parents in order to ask for advice.

The addresses (and current member counts) again...

USNA-Family usna-family@navy-usna.org (991)
USNA-Plebe usna-plebe@navy-usna.org (716)
USNA-Sports usna-sports@navy-usna.org (531)

Only your Moderators may post messages to the master USNA-Net
(usna-net@navy-usna.org).

Thanks for your understanding and patience.

It took me a while, and my poor eyes are strained...:>)

But I have finished the First Block photos...and they look great!

I think that EVERY boat is there...along with many, many Mids and many Mid
faces.

Thanks to Linda and Harry Hobert and Andi and Dave Darone for sending these
terrific shots! Linda's Mid even took some nice shots of a "Mid's Eye View"
from his ship!

Go to our website: www.navy-usna.org

Click on the "Photo Gallery" item in the menu items at the left of the page.

The YP photos are at the top of the Photo Gallery page.

Enjoy!

Sandi
