This is being relayed to our entire membership (not just the Class of '00

a copy or know of a way to obtain one, please respond to me personally so
that I might be able to make that information available to anyone else who
is interested as well.

To all USNA-Net Listserver members,

A recent posting by one of our members caught your Moderators by
surprise. We thought we had defined the Rule of Operation about the
Sale of Goods and Services fairly well. We hadn't considered
"Bartering" until now.

The recent offer to "Trade" homes during Commissioning Week '02 is a
"Barter" and is still considered as an offer of Goods and/or Services
FOR SALE. As such, these "Trades" are forbidden under our Rules of
Operation which say...

"7.	No Commercial Content
Message which contain information about Commercial Goods and/or
Services for sale are prohibited. This includes any message offering
anything for sale by a member or a local Annapolis establishment."

As your Moderators, we realize that information about these sorts of
things may be of great value to our members and, therefore, we will be
initiating a "Message Board" (exclusively for MEMBERS ONLY) which will
permit the OFFERING of ANY Goods/Services for Sale or REQUESTS for same
by our members. These will include: Ride Shares, Ticket Exchanges, Care
Packages, Local Accomodations, Rentals, Local Merchant Offerings, Cell
Phone Deals, etc.

It will take a few days to get the technical details worked out and it
will be announced formally when it is working 100%. When it is ready,
we will post a formal announcement with details about how it works, etc.

Until then, please remember that NOTHING is to be offered or asked for
on our lists that are Goods and/or Services for Sale and that the
existing RULE (#7) has not been rescinded, nor will it be when the
Message Board goes on-line.

We hear you. This new service is probably long overdue. This will be a
MEMBERS ONLY service, making your membership in our Listservers even
more valuable. Membership does, indeed, have its priviledges.

Ladies and Gentlemen...

I said it before and I find myself forced to repeat myself for those who
may not remember my message of just last FRIDAY @ 5:00 PM.

USNA-Net is NOT a public discussion forum. It is NOT a soapbox for the
use of those who wish to extoll or decry the US Naval Academy or
anything else for that matter.

We are a MENTORING group. Parents Helping Parents through shared
ADVICE, SUPPORT and INFORMATION. Opinions (pro or con) are NOT
appropriate for our lists.

Members who consistently choose to violate our Rules of Operation are
now being removed from our Listservers for these violations. We are
here to share our experiences as Parents of Midshipmen. We are NOT here
to preach, discuss or analyze the Academy. We are also NOT here to
argue for changes in attitude among our fellow Parents.

We are here to help each other. If you are unhappy with this policy,
unsubscribe. If you are unwilling to abide by our Rules you will be
removed.

To quote an old Navy Chief that I had the pleasure of serving under, "If
you don't like it, put a sock in it." Don't write to me crying about
freedom of speech. Membership in these lists is a privilege not a
right.

Now let's get on with helping each other and leave these DISCUSSIONS
behind us, once and for all.

If you question this policy, I suggest you reread our Rules of Operation
and our Mission Statement, both available on our web site.

To All,

Once again we have had an invasion of the KAKworm, a rather harmless but
persistent email borne virus. PLEASE take note...

***** If you are using Microsoft Outlook Express you are VULNERABLE to this
virus!!! *****

The worm utilizes a known Microsoft Outlook Express security hole so that a
virus is created on your computer WITHOUT YOU DOING ANYTHING, including
reading the message or opening and/or reading its attachment. Simply
receiving the email message with its attachment will cause the virus to be
placed on your system.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Since our initial run-in with the KAKworm earlier this
year, our USNA-Net server has been set up to strip away the infected
attachment file from ANY email sent through our system. The KAKworm acts as
a two part infection. The first part is an imbedded "Active-X" command that
is actually part of the email message itself. This part of the infection
is the trigger mechanism. The second part is another file (KAK.HTA) which
is the payload and is the attached file that is copied to your hard drive
and causes the infection to spread to others.

When you receive an infected email, the "Active-X" trigger (inside the
email) causes the attached file (KAK.HTA) to be copied and thus infect your
machine. Our server strips the infected attachment portion of the worm from
the email and therefore, you CANNOT get infected from an email received from
our Lists. The "Active-X" trigger cannot be removed from the actual email
and so when it arrives in your mailbox, your anti-virus software will still
send up red flags and sound the alarm but there is no danger from this as
long as the attachment is NOT there with the message.

This is why we are so dead set against anyone sending anything to our lists
with attachments.

Microsoft has patched this security hole. The patch is available to you for
free by going to this site:

http://www.norton.com/avcenter/venc/data/wscript.kakworm.html

read the instructions and download the patch so that your system, and
everyone with whom you email, is protected from this worm!!!

We need EVERY MEMBER using Microsoft Outlook Express to download this patch,
if you have not already done so, do it TODAY!! Don't download/receive any
email, or send a single email to anyone until you have done this. Just
because you do NOT have the infection right now does NOT mean you might not
get it. If you do NOT have the patch, you are vulnerable to receiving it
the next time you receive an email from a friend who might, unknowingly,
have sent it to you. Remember, we can only strip the attachment from email
sent to you through our Lists. Private email between members is NOT
PROTECTED !

PLEASE download the patch! Then, we might be able to put this whole KAKworm
fiasco to rest!!

As always, we recommend that you install a good anti-virus protection
program on your computer and keep it updated.

One more thing... Mike and I are aware of EVERY time an email is sent to
the Lists with a virus attached. We not only get notifications from the
server BUT we receive our own copies of the email. So, although I know you
are trying to keep us on our toes, we do NOT need you to write us ( OR THE
LISTS !!!) telling us when you received one. We already know. We get the
first copy of every email, hot off the presses.

Thanks for your understanding. Get the patch, get an anti-virus program and
remember that your Mids may be infected or could get infected from you as
they begin sending and receiving email again this AC year.

To All USNA-Net Members,

Due to popular demand and in an effort to keep our message traffic down,
Sandi and I have put a new CLASSIFIED ADVERTISEMENT WEB PAGE into service
this morning.

You may find the new page listed as "Classifieds" in the main menu on our
web site at www.navy-usna.org. You will need to supply your User Name and
Password to access the site. As an example of what the ads may look like,
we've placed a sample ad for Sandi's Web Design business in the Classifieds
to get us started. The newest ads will ALWAYS be at the top of the list and
are dated for your convenience.

The Classifieds are FREE for the use of our members. No ads will be
accepted EXCEPT from members. No one except members will be allowed to
access or view the Classifieds, hence, the password requirement. This is a
service intended for MEMBERS ONLY. Get the point?

There will be NO restrictions on what may be advertised except that all
items must be LEGAL and all ads in good taste in the view of the Moderators.
This means that we WILL allow all legal Goods and/or Services including Real
Estate, Rentals, Tickets, Business Listings, Rides Wanted, Cancellations,
Employment, Parents' Club Event Announcements, Club Fund Raisers, etc. The
few rules and/or suggestions about content are on the "Add your Ad" page.

For now, we will allow most ads to remain on the page for two weeks in order
to maintain freshness. This may change according to how the whole process
works. Once ads are removed they will be lost forever. So, don't write
asking us or our other members for an ad that was there last week but is
gone now. We won't have a way to retrieve it or send you "Back Issues" of
the ads. If you see something that you are interested in today, print out
the page for later reference and keep it yourself.

As always, if you have problems with accessing the page or in placing an ad,
write to YOUR MODERATORS, not to the lists.

In association with the addition of this new service, we have revised the
Rule of Operation regarding Commercial Content. The new Rule is as
follows...

"7. No Commercial Content
- All message which contains information about Personal or Commercial Goods
and/or Services FOR SALE or WANTED TO BUY are prohibited. This includes any
message offering to barter, exchange or give away anything.
- All such offerings/advertisements MUST be placed on our Classified
Advertisement Web Page.
- All legal Goods and/or Services are allowed in the Classified Ads
including Real Estate, Rentals, Tickets, Business Listings, Rides Wanted,
Cancellations, Employment, etc.
- NO Football/USNA Sports ticket sales or exchanges are allowed to be
included in a message to our Listservers. They must be placed in the
Classified Ads Web Page instead.
- If an email message mentions Prices, Money or Goods/Services WANTED or FOR
SALE it may NOT be broadcast to the lists. All such information MUST be
placed on the Classified Advertisement Page. ."

This should keep loads of messages off the lists and make everyone a little
happier since the rule is now very Black and White. If it's about something
for sale or wanted to buy, trade or give away, it goes in the Classifieds
and not in an email to the lists.

If you choose to place an ad in the classifieds, please remember to use your
Full REAL name and your email address under which you are subscribed as a
member. Please do not abuse the privilege of placing ads on this page. The
Classifieds are not intended to be used for the benefit of non-members.

In case you forgot, your User Name and Password are...

User Name: brigade
Password: uniform (all lowercase)

Enjoy !

To all.

For the past several weeks, we have been experiencing a minor difficulty
with OUR server that is causing some messages to be transmitted more than
once.

We are continually monitoring the situation and feel we have it licked.
Time will tell.

Just use the delete key and please refrain from telling Sandi and me since
we get all of the doubles as well and are on top of the problem before you
even notice. Telling us just adds to our email backlog. We appreciate the
messages but can't respond when a couple dozen of you decide to tell us
about the problem.

It may reoccur. If it does, we'll be on it ASAP.

Thanks for your patience.
