Dear Friends and Fellow USNA-Net Parents,

(I know this is lengthy but PLEASE take the time to read all of this.)

Within a day or so, you will all receive an initial message from our Sponsor
group, WP.Org, announcing the beginning of our next semi-annual Fund-Raiser.
A number of you have asked over the past months how we manage to offer so
many valuable services and such great support to fellow parents on the
USNA-Net Listservers and our USNA-Net Web Site. We do it entirely through
voluntary donations.

Let me assure you all of one thing, up front...

Membership in our USNA-Net Lists and use of our Web Site and its Archives,
Chat Room and Classifieds IS AND ALWAYS WILL BE FREE to Parents and Friends
of USNA.

Sandi and I, along with a few others (behind the scenes), make this thing
work on a strictly VOLUNTEER basis. (No USNA-Net Moderator or Webmaster is
compensated in any way for their time or service.) There are however some
costs associated with the operation such as equipment (our servers in Austin
TX), major Internet access (we access the Internet via a fractional T-1
line) plus operating expenses (utilities, software, etc.). We don't do this
alone.

Here's how it all works...

About 7 years ago a West Point Cadet was involved in an auto accident just
weeks before he was due to be commissioned. He recovered well but his
injuries prohibited his Commissioning. While he graduated, he was released
from service and sent home. He began an on-line service to assist his
fellow West Point Grads strictly in gratitude for all that USMA had done for
him. That humble, volunteer beginning grew into WP.Org, a non-profit
organization serving over 17,000 USMA grads, 1,700 Families of USMA Cadets
and recently, our USNA Parents Network which has grown to 1,500 Families of
USNA Midshipmen.

Shortly after USNA Parents were invited to join USNA-Net, Sandi and I were
asked to Moderate the Navy side of this operation since the fledgling list
had a USMA father as its Moderator and he admittedly knew little of the
Naval Academy and the needs of Navy Parents. When we took over in January
of 1999 there were only 76 names on our list of Navy Parents. Today, we
number 1,500 USNA families and are still growing.

We could not have accomplished any of this if it were not for the generosity
and support of WP.Org. They have provided free hosting for our HUGE
USNA-Net web site without regard for its size or the level of activity.
Every day almost 300 of you go to that site for something or other. On days
when we've posted a new group of pictures or something else of high
interest, we've had over 1,000 visit in 24 hours. Currently the hit counter
is approaching 136,000 individual visits to the site since it was installed
22 months ago. That's a whole lot of looking by our members.

In that same time period we've seen over 10,000 email messages be exchanged
via our lists between members and that doesn't count the responses that are
sent privately to members when they have a question or problem, only those
posted to our lists.

We have been able to assist families through the serious and the silly
things that are involved in USNA Parenting from "What do I pack for I-day?"
or "How do I handle my Mids depression or desire to quit?" to "Does anyone
know what a Yard Dog is?" We have been able to be there for each other
because of this wonderful and selfless organization. They actually ask
nothing in return.

Membership in our Lists is FREE, just like watching Public Television. If
you send in a donation, you get to watch all of the excellent programming.
If you don't donate, you STILL GET TO WATCH ! What could be better?

Beginning again in a few days, we will be asking those of you that can send
in a donation to do so. If your purse strings are a little tight right now,
we understand. We don't ask for much... Whatever you can afford. Last
spring the average donation was $33 per donor and we had 254 families send
something in to help defray our costs. At that time we had only 793
Families on our lists in total. Basically, 1 in 3 families donated
something. Some sent only $10 while one '03 parent sent in $250. Who gives
what, is private (even Sandi and I do NOT know who gives and how much.).

All we see are the number of donors and the total amount donated by our
group. All we care about is that our group does its part to support our
benefactor organization, WP.Org.

As soon as our fund-raiser is launched, you will be given details of how you
can donate "on-line" or via US Mail. Until then, I'm sure that we can count
on all of you to support us in kind for the support you have all received
over the past months or years.

To all...

We have been having difficulty with the server for several days. We are
aware of the problem and it will be fixed as soon as the troops can muster
the necessary personnel to the task.

It's our problem and there is nothing you can do about it. Our apologies.
Please be patient.

Dear Navy Family,

Most of you have now received the Kickoff letter from WP.Org that initiated
our latest fund raising campaign. I won't go on and on about it but there
are a few details that you all need to know.

USNA-Net is a volunteer organization using computers and telecommunications
equipment supplied to us through the generosity of WP.Org. While Sandi and
I do not receive any compensation for the many hours we put into the
USNA-Net web site and Moderating the Lists, there are real costs associated
with operating the hardware that makes it all happen.

Membership in any of our lists is like Public Television... If you send in
a donation you get to participate in the finest of programming available on
TV. If you don't donate, you STILL GET TO WATCH. You just feel better
about the whole experience.

Most of you have expressed your gratitude to Sandi or me for all that our
lists have meant to you over the past months or years. And who can forget
the help we al got through Plebe Summer? Now it's time to show that
gratitude by sending whatever you can spare to support our expenses.

During our last drive about 1 in 3 members sent in a donation. The average
was about $33 per donor for a total of $8,420.00 from 254 donors out of
about 750 members. This time we have almost 1,500 members in our group. I
would hope that we can do even better this time, especially with all of the
new '04 parents on board.

Not that I want to make this into a competition but last January, our Navy
'03 Parents donated $4,405 to Army '03 Parents' donation of $4,501. Almost
too close to call. (And I might add, these two groups were first and second
of all groups to donate.) I'd really like to see our average donation come
up a bit as well as getting a few more of you to participate. Only you know
if our service is worth $10 a month. ($60 for six months.)

A FEW WORDS ON ON-LINE DONATING...

First, our SECURE server is just that. You need not worry that the
information will ever be intercepted or shared with others. It is all
encrypted and a whole lot more secure than handing your credit card to the
waiter at the local bistro.

If you choose to use the On-Line Secure Web Site to donate, please review
the information on our USNA-Net Web Site about which boxes to check so that
YOUR DONATION IS PROPERLY CREDITED TO USNA-NET. You must check NAVY and
then you should scroll down to indicate your Mid's Graduation Year. All of
this is graphically illustrated with a sample form on the "INFO" page on
donating.

If you want to send in a check, the address is also on the INFO page. Just
make sure that you write NAVY PARENT CLASS OF 'XX in the memo line of the
check.

To review all of this information, visit our web site at www.navy-usna.org
and click on the INFO or DONATE icons in the middle of the main page.

If you have any questions, write to me before you send in your donation.
I'll be glad to explain anything and help you through the process.

Let's show everyone that we support USNA-Net and all that it does for its
members.

Thanks in advance,

Mike has been hard at work. We have NOT fixed the duplication
problem...please bear with us on this. Our WP-Org gurus are working on it
and we will have it fixed as soon as we possibly can.

The hard work has been on a new (and I think, exciting) feature we have JUST
added to your USNA-Net website. (www.navy-usna.org)

As you may know, there are many sites that you can find on the World Wide
Web that will send free postcards and greeting cards via email. Well, now
USNA-Net has its own free postcards that you can send to anyone you know who
has an email address.

And the really great part is that the images that you can choose from are
nearly ALL USNA, USN, and USMC images or graphics!! Some of these images
are taken from our own Photo Gallery! The three graphic images are my own
work. Of the six general images, two - the moon and the sunrise - were
taken by Mike, the sunrise photo from our bedroom window! I spent the
better part of two days searching out great Naval Academy, Navy, and Marine
Corps images and adapting them for postcard use. Mike did all the coding
work. There are some really terrific photos included here, and I know as
soon as you take a look, you will feel compelled to send someone, ANYONE, a
postcard!!

You can send one of 36 images and a note, just like a real postcard. It is
really easy to do, and you will receive an acknowledgment as soon as the
recipient opens the email postcard, so you will know that they got it!

Mike and I have "our" mission - to keep improving the USNA-Net website...to
add features and conveniences for you...so that you are happy with this
service. We love doing this, and welcome any suggestions!

I will add just 8 words, here..."Please remember to contribute to our fund
drive!"

To access the new Postcard feature, go to the website: www.navy-usna.org
and click onto "Postcards" about 3/4 of the way down the list of menu items
on the left.

Enjoy this new feature and let us know what you think of it!

To all...

Sandi has added even more great images to our Postcard Service. Check
them out on our Web Site at www.navy-usna.org - Click on "Postcards" in
the Main Menu on the left.

It's obvious that our parents like this service since we've had 830
individual visits to that page since we put it up at 2:00 PM,
yesterday. Now there are 48 different postcards to send to friends and
family. We're glad you enjoy the service. We've heard from quite a few
members about it and it's all been great feedback.

On another note, we've added a copy of the current FULCRUM to the web
site. The Fulcrum is a complete schedule of all Off-Campus Activities
by our Mids. It includes all Sports events plus everything from the
Latin Studies Club Meeting to the Men's Glee Club Schedule.

You can access it from the pop-up window that opens automatically when
you go to our Web Site (www.navy-usna.org). Simply click on the "Click
Here" link in the pop-up window. Once the schedule opens, you will find
the information grouped into six geographical regions: Northeast,
MidAtlantic, Southeast, Central, SouthCentral and West, so that you
might easily find activities near your home town. To see the different
regions, click on the "Region Tabs" at that bottom of the schedule.

The Fulcrum was provided to us by Elizabeth Peltosalo of the Alumni
Association who received her copy from the Public Affairs Office (PAO).
We converted it from an Excel (.xls) file to a web format so that it
could be readily referenced by our members. It will remain in place for
the balance of the month and be replaced as soon as we obtain the
November issue.

Hope you all enjoy the newest features.

Dear Navy Friends,

As most of you know, our Fall Fund Drive is now underway. We need your
continued generosity to offset the operating expenses involved in
keeping our Parents' Support Network on-line, 24/7/365. While our
efforts as Moderators and Webmasters for USNA-Net are strictly
voluntary, USNA-Net and its support organization, WP.Org, do have real,
ongoing expenses for equipment and telecommunications costs.

While we are only 1,500 families and a small part of the total
organization for which these funds are being raised, only you know the
true value of the service that USNA-Net provides to our members. Each
of you has been helped enormously in the past months. Surely that is
worthy of a contribution to insure our continued ability to provide the
support, advice and information that you have received as a member.

Please take a moment today (right now, in fact) to go to our web site
and contribute on-line or write a check. We don't ask for much
(whatever you feel you can afford) but we ask that you send your
donation in as soon as possible. The sooner we reach our goal - the
quicker this fund drive will end.

Last spring, ONE of every THREE Navy Parents sent in something. So far
this time, our participation is way behind that level. We really need
you to act now and not wait.

It's not as if you can't be a member if you don't contribute. You can.
We have always said that membership in USNA-Net is free. It is. But we
rely upon the generosity of that very same membership to keep this
service alive and vibrant, serving all members regardless of whether or
not a donation was received.

Since the last fund drive, your contributions have enabled us to add the
Chat Room, The Classified Ads, many, many photographs, the USNA-Net
Wallpaper, the Archive and Web Site Search Engines, and most recently,
the Electronic USNA-Net Postcards. (We know you like the postcards
because over 500 of them have already been sent in just five days with
1,950 individual visits to the new page being recorded.)

With so much web site content and so much advice and support being
offered daily, think how much better you will feel when the next appeal
message comes through in a few days, asking for a donation and you can
sit back, knowing that you've already done your part, that your donation
is already doing good for yourself and all of the other members of
USNA-Net. Our unofficial motto has always been "Parents Helping
Parents." Let's all "help" to keep it that simple.

To donate, visit our Web Site at www.navy-usna.org and click on the blue
"INFO" or "DONATE" icons on in the middle of the main page.

OR

Mail a check (payable to WP.Org, Inc.) to...

West-Point.Org Inc.
PO Box 2108
Abingdon VA 24212-2108

Please Indicate "NAVY PARENT - CLASS OF 'XX" on your Check.

(For those that are members but not parents, please make sure you
indicate "NAVY" on the check to insure your donation is credited to
USNA-Net.)

Thanks for YOUR support.

To our Navy Family,

Duplicate Messages...
It appears that the problem has been solved through the efforts of ditus
at our Host, WP.Org. There may be a few still duplicates in the
pipeline for some of you but in the next few hours, they should all be
delivered.

Postcards...
So far 2,055 visits have been made to the page since Monday with 679
cards being sent to someone. Looks like our members really like this
new feature.

Please note that postcard page is open to anyone who visits our Web Site
and is NOT a members only feature. If you want to tell your friends or
your Mids about it, go ahead. We love knowing that it is so popular and
so very useful to all of you. Sandi says that she will be putting up
some additional images tomorrow morning. Take a look later tomorrow.

Fund Drive...
It continues with good results so far. If you haven't taken the time to
send in a donation, please do your part soon. Visit our Web Site at
www.navy-usna.org and click on the blue "INFO" button in the middle of
the main page for information and the on-line donation form. Or if you'd
prefer, send a check (payable to WP-ORG, Inc.) to...

    West-Point.Org Inc.
    PO Box 2108
    Abingdon, VA 24212-2108

Please Indicate "NAVY PARENT - CLASS OF 'XX" on your Check.

Thanks to those that have already donated. You know who you are.

To all...

So far, only 84 out of over 1,500 Navy Parents have taken the time to donate
to our Fall Fund-raiser. After three weeks this is very disappointing.

While those 84 generous members have donated a total of $4,900 we are way
behind our goal. Last time, we collected $8,420.00 from 254 donors when we
had only 850 members. (Almost 1 in 3 members sent in something.) Now,
we're almost TWICE that total membership but have heard from only 84 of you
so far !!! That's just short of 1 in 20 members who have taken the time to
donate.

While I know that the Holidays are coming up and some of your are reluctant
to donate, we really do need your help and support.

Please... If you've put off donating for whatever reason, send in your
support today. Many of you are new but the return on this investment is
worth many times the equivalent of just $8 or $10 dollars per month for six
months.

Please act now. Please.

We are an all volunteer group on the Navy Side of this organization but we
still incur expenses for telecommunications equipment and such. Without
your support to cover our day to day operating expenses, USNA-Net will not
be around for the next class of parents. That's the long and short of it.

We will survive, ONLY if you help.

To All...

Due to the expulsion of a member for a violation of our Rules of Operation
concerning Privacy, it is necessary that we change the password which allows
access to our Archives, Chat Room and Classified Ads.

The member passed along a message received from our lists to non-members.
This may have been his first offense but our Rules are very specific. He
has been permanently removed for this extreme broach of our Privacy Policy.

Effective immediately the Username and Password have been changed to...

User Name: brigade
Password: honor (all lowercase)

Please PRINT THIS MESSAGE AND KEEP IT HANDY for future use.

We're sorry for the inconvenience but we feel the privacy of our members and
their Mids is of the utmost importance to us all.
