To My USNA-Net Family,

Over the past several weeks, you have read posts from WP-Org and from Mike
about the current fund-raiser (FD8). Tonight, I want to send you a personal
note explaining what all this means to me, a Navy Mom.

By now, you should be aware of what a tremendous resource USNA-Net has been
for you. Mike and I have spent countless hours to give you a website with
information and features that you will not find elsewhere. We do this out of
a sense of love and commitment, if we did not enjoy doing it, we could not
continue. If my mail is any indication of how important USNA-Net has been
to you, then I know that we have been successful. Every day, I read the
posts that come to the lists, just as you do. I read the posts as a parent,
first, and then as a Moderator. Even though my son graduated from the
Academy last May, I still feel connected to the Yard and to every parent and
Mid. I read your questions and comments and have often been told that for
every person who actually writes, there are dozens more who were wondering
or thinking about the same subject. I can feel your gratitude when you find
that one piece of information you were searching for. I can almost see your
smiles through your words of thanks when a member, through their descriptive
words, makes you feel that you were right there beside them, enjoying the
special, as well as the everyday, happenings on the Yard. How comforted
were you when other parents let you know you were NOT alone in your
situation, or when thoughtful parents wrote you personally to give you
answers or hope and encouragement?

You know, that is why we are here. To offer each other answers, sprinkled
with caring and concern. We have found a family with each other...and I
know that many of you have found life-long friends because you met right
here on our Lists. What a wonderful thing email can be!!

We have always told you that USNA-Net has no membership fees: its services
are provided to us free of direct charge. But WP-Org, who supplies us with
everything that we need to bring you USNA-Net, needs funding in order to
continue to operate. To fund operation, WP-ORG depends on our voluntary
support. I know that Mike has likened our fund-raiser to your local Public
Broadcasting fund-raisers...you get great service whether you donate or
not...but today I want to ask those of you who have not yet donated to do it
NOW...don't put it off any longer.

Information about individual donors and donations is strictly confidential -
known only to WP-ORG's CFO. However, he's informed us that FD8 has received
167 contributions from our total membership of 1516 USNA-Net subscribers.
That's 11% of our members who have taken the time to either mail a check or
submit an on-line donation. To everyone who has donated, my heartfelt
thanks! But I just know we can do better! Please take the time, tonight,
to show us that this service we have provided is important to you.

To donate on-line using our secure server with your credit or debit card, go
to our web site at www.navy-usna.org and click on the Blue "INFO" box in the
middle of the main page. Just read and follow the instructions. It won't
take ten minutes.

Or if you prefer, you may mail a check (payable to WP-ORG, Inc.) to...

West-Point.Org Inc.
PO Box 2108
Abingdon VA 24212-2108

Please Indicate "NAVY PARENT - CLASS OF 'XX" on your Check.

I want to thank all those, once again, who have already shown their support
by donating to WP-Org. And a special thanks to everyone who will donate
tonight, as well !!

Go Navy-Beat Army

Sandi

To all.

Today has been a very busy day for your Moderators. Among other things, TWO
different members have been removed from all USNA-Net Listservers for
sending unsolicited email to other members. In both cases, the email was
political in nature and was NOT sent via our lists but directly to members
who have written to the lists in the past and whose addresses the offender
had obtained from participation in our lists.

Not only is this a gross misuse of our Lists and a direct violation of our
Rule on Privacy but it is a violation of the Federal Communications
Commission Regulations. We cannot and will not be party to illegal actions
on the part of our members.

This is more than a reminder to the rest of our members. As the election
approaches, any member sending unsolicited political email to any of our
members will also be immediately removed from our listservers.

Our lists are not soapboxes, political or otherwise. Intruding upon other
members, either via our lists or privately, with your particular viewpoints
or urging them to take action (vote for "your" candidate) is not what our
lists are about. We are Parents Helping Parents.

Dear Parents and Navy Family...

We are nearing our collective goal for this Fund-Raiser. As of last
night....

Goal $65,000
Total Collected: $56,889 (88%)

Donated by Navy Parents: $12,265.00 (19%) from 248 of 1518
Members
Donated by West Point Parents: $16,843.00 (26%) from 364 of 2073 Members

Friends, we need to reach our goal as soon as possible to bring the drive to
an end and get back to the business of Helping other Parents. No one likes
to be pestered for money and I have refrained from posting frequent messages
to that affect but we really do need the funds and our membership is our
only source for funding the daily costs for telecommunications services and
equipment that are vital to our continued operation.

Not to mention the fact that the Army Parents are kicking our proverbial
butts when it comes to donations for this service. Sure, there are about
500 more of them but since when are superior numbers an "excuse" for taking
second place? (Sir, No Excuse, Sir!)

Perhaps you have put off sending in a donation. Perhaps you didn't think
that you could make a difference. Perhaps... You can't afford a large
donation...

No one has asked for a large donation. Send us $20 or $15 or even $12
(that's a 2 bucks a month for the next six months). We need your help. And
when I say "we" I mean this entire listserver and it's huge support network
of parents who genuinely believe that we are all better off collectively
because of USNA-Net than we would be without it.

Then there's the fact that, as a Navy Parent, I don't wish to hang my head
for the next six months knowing that the Parents of those guys in gray up on
the Hudson could reach deeper and give more than NAVY! We need just over
$4,579 to pull ahead of them. That's just $3 per USNA-Net member and we can
have bragging rights for the rest of this School Year!

I didn't want to turn this into a competition but since when did Navy ever
not consider anything with West Point a competition???

Let's show them just what a great group Navy Parents are! Write out a check
TODAY. Make it payable to West-Point.Org Inc. and send it to

West-Point.Org Inc.
PO Box 2108
Abingdon VA 24212-2108

(Make sure you say "Navy Parent" on the check's memo line.)

or

Donate On-Line by going to our Web Site at www.navy-usn.org and clicking on
the Blue "DONATE" icon on our main page for instructions on how to fill in
the SECURE SERVER Form that is ready RIGHT NOW to take your donation.

Please, Please give us a little something, even if it's only a few dollars.
We can do this if we ALL try.

PS. Our USNA-Net web site is huge compared to the WP Parents' site and has
had over 150,000 hits in less than two years of operation. WP's has been

visits (62,400 hits). To scout the "enemy's" site go to

To All,

Tomorrow is Veterans' Day. Mike and I put together a tribute page a couple
of years ago to remember and honor our country's Veterans. There is not one
among us who have not felt the sacrifices of our Veterans. Whether a close
family member, or a close friend, we have all known brave men and women who
have sacrificed, some paying the ultimate price, for our country and its way
of life.

It is fitting that we honor those who have come before ...particularly as
our sons and daughters prepare to take up the gauntlet.

Please take a moment to view our "What is a Vet?" page.

Dear Friends,

If you are an AOL member, PLEASE READ THIS MESSAGE!

I don't mean to shout but this is very important to those of you that
subscribe to our listservers using AOL. (If you are NOT an AOL member, you
may hit the delete key now.)

The latest and greatest version of AOL's software (Version 6.0) is NOT
compatible with our server. It does not allow AOL members to select Plain
Text (ASCII) for email. It sends "all" messages in Rich Text Format (HTML)
and no longer gives you a choice to send in Plain Text.

RTF is very unfriendly to our archives and using it prevents our server from
attaching your signature line to your message as it is relayed to our
membership. Thus our dilemma.

We will work to solve this problem as soon as possible but in the meantime,
as an AOL member you can do several things to help.

1.) If you haven't upgraded to Version 6.0 yet, DON'T. Not for the
moment.
2.) If you have already upgraded, please observe the following to
minimize problems when sending messages to our lists...
    a. Do not use images or stationary for backgrounds.
    b. Do not use colored text or fancy fonts in your messages.
    c. Do not embed photos or images in your messages.
    d. Do not send photos or images as attachments.
    e. PLEASE SIGN YOUR MESSAGES AT THE BOTTOM with at least...
            your first and last name,
            your email address,
your Mid's name and grad year.

We will work to fix "our" problem with RTF since about 510 of our members
are AOL members and we will not accept losing 1 out of 3 of our Navy family
to this problem. Our AOL members are too important to us to ignore this
conflicting technology problem.

Please bear with us. We promise to address this problem as soon as
possible. Somewhere, there is a reasonable solution for USNA-Net and AOL.

========================================
Side Bar... (Said tongue-in-cheek.)
Of course, if you have ever considered changing Internet Service Providers
and leaving AOL, now might be a really good time. :>) Basic membership to
AOL is $21.95 and most of the rest of the world is paying only $9.95 per
month for full access to the Internet and really good email service using
software that's already installed with your Windows 95 or 98 computer.
That's a savings of $12 per months or $144 per year! But then, it's only
money and I would never presume to tell you how to spend it. Even Instant
Messaging and Buddy Lists are available to non-AOL members.

Also, so that you know that I "know of what I speak," I joined AOL and
installed Version 6.0 to test it and possibly find a solution. In doing so,
I noticed one very troubling thing. Version 6.0 is a resource hog. In
opening and closing multiple windows, looking for help and preference
settings, this new version consistently caused my machine to deplete
resources to the point that it crashed my computer six or eight times in a
row. I have a huge system with more than enough RAM for even the most
demanding applications. This is another very serious drawback to 6.0,
especially for the computer newbies who don't know what to do in such
events.

(I tested on my Windows 95 machine and not my Windows 98 machine since so
many of our members use 95 at this time. Windows 98 does a marginally
better job of resource allocation but would still experience the same
problem. Windows NT (Network Server Operating System) and its newer
replacement, Windows 2000, do a much better job of resource allocation but
are not systems for home use.)

My honest advise is to wait for Version 6.1 to be released with fixes for
these and other problems that should have been caught in Beta Testing but
weren't.
========================================

In the meantime, please DO NOT REFRAIN from participating in our lists. We
will deal with this issue and move forward. Our AOL members are valued
members of our USNA-Net Family and we want (need) your full participation
regardless of RTF and its associated problems.

Sincerely,

Mike Zets

Dear Navy Family,

On behalf of WP.Org and all of its beneficiaries including all of the Navy
Listservers and Club web sites collectively called USNA-Net, we wish to
extend to all of you our most sincere thanks for your generosity during the
current fund drive.

We have reached our goal of $65,000 and have concluded this funds appeal.
Doing more than our share, USNA-Net Parents and Family answered the call for
support with overwhelming generosity. As we closed the campaign at the end
of business today, our Navy donations totaled...

$14,349.00 donated by 303 Donors which represents over 22% of the WP.Org's
Budget for the next six months.

Again, many thanks to all gave in support of our efforts to help other
parents.

Mike and Sandi.

To all...

For reasons known only to those who make such policies, the Academy has
distributed a warning to all those who have received their A/N Tickets to
this year's game to the effect that A/N Tickets may not be Sold or
Transferred to anyone under any circumstances at ANY price. And that to do
so will result in the permanent blackballing of the seller from ever being
able to purchase A/N Tickets again. This includes Season Ticket Holders.
(I paraphrase but you get the idea.) Essentially this means everyone who
purchased any A/N tickets is forbidden to sell them or even give them away.

In an effort to protect our members from any problems with this policy, it
is

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED THAT YOU DO NOT POST "TICKETS - FOR SALE" on our web site
with any personal identifying information that could be used to blackball
you for defying this policy.

Instead, if you have excess tickets that you will not be using, visit our
Classified Ads and contact one of the many parents who have placed ads there
looking for tickets. Select the person that fits your circumstances and
contact them directly, making whatever arrangements you can both be
comfortable with.

In this way, only the person receiving your excess tickets will know where
they came from.

USNA-Net DOES NOT support or endorse the sale of any tickets at more than
face value since this is scalping and is illegal. We do not, however, want
to see a parent or family member miss the Big Game if there is a way to get
them a ticket.

We feel this is a reasonable tack under the circumstances. We are
facilitating these ticket transfers (even if it is against the stated policy
of the issuing agent) since our members are benefited and it is in
everyone's best interest to do so.

Please cooperate. It's for everyone's own good.

If you still need tickets, post a WANTED ad and see if it produces results.
It has already resulted in at least a few ticket transfers. If you ad was
posted more than two weeks ago, it has been removed since ad only remain on
the site for 14 days. There is no prohibition against posting it again. I
will insure that all Tickets Wanted ads remain up from now until game day.
If your ad is answered and you no longer need tickets, please drop me a note
and I will take it down before then.

NOTE: Please remember that the Classifieds are "FOR MEMBERS - BY MEMBERS"
and should not be used to benefit non-members. If you are a member, you may
post an Ad looking for tickets for those in your immediate family, etc. But
don't use them to find tickets for the guy down the street when so many of
our members are looking for themselves or their kids.

Also, don't encourage non-members to join USNA-Net just so that they can
find tickets. These are fair weather members who couldn't be bothered with
joining before and only want to join to take advantage of this situation. I
don't want to be loaded with subscriptions before the game and unsubscribes
afterwards. Sandi and I have enough to do without the headache of these
sorts of things.

Anyway... Place those Wanted Ads and good luck.

Go Navy - beat army !

We received the following this morning from the Yard. It explains the
"insert" that was received with the A/N tickets. It is a shame that there
are those who seek to profit from this experience...

===============original message===============
The reasoning behind the strong warning was born out yesterday when tickets
appeared on E-Bay for $175 each. They belonged to a Plebes parents.

The warning is to help prevent scalping such as this, not to penalize the
parent who cannot make it to the game and make them eat the tickets. It is
perfectly fine to sell your tickets at face value or give them to someone
you know will not be a scalper.

Additionally, the parents need to know that the Ravens do not allow selling
of tickets on their stadium property, even at face value, and they police it
very well.
=================end message================

Good info to know...no one wants to be led off the Raven's property in
handcuffs! :>)

Anyway, Mike and I thought that you would want to know the reasons for the
Academy position.

Good luck to those who are still looking for tickets. Mike and I will be
watching the game from our living room, perhaps with a fire and some hot
chocolate!

Sandi

To all,

Please, if you placed an Ad in the Classifieds for tickets and have gotten
those tickets, drop me a note so that I can remove your ad and save others
the cost of a long distance call.

Also, even thought I probably shouldn't do this, a little birdie has
whispered in your Moderator's ear that A/N tickets are being advertised "For
Sale" on e-bay (www.e-bay.com). We do NOT specifically endorse this service
and remind our members to USE A CREDIT CARD for all on-line purchases to
avoid the possibility of fraud or "goods not received."

Thanks in advance,

To all USNA-Net Members...

We have just become aware of yet another VIRUS that is circulating through
the email system of the Internet. As yet, it has not shown its face in our
listservers, but it is only a matter of time until it does. This warning is
to protect you from any damage which might occur to your computer BEFORE you
might be infected.

The virus is called NAVIDAD.EXE and arrives as an ATTACHMENT to an email
coming from someone who you know. It will come "attached" to an email that
has nothing to do with the virus and CAN COMPLETELY DISABLE YOUR COMPUTER.

We have verified that this virus is NOT A HOAX as so many virus warning are.
You may visit

http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.navidad.html

for complete information about the virus and how to remove it should you
become infected.

IN THE MEANTIME...

You are reminded that "Attachments" are forbidden on messages posted to our
lists for this very reason. See our Rules of Operation on our web site
(www.navy-usna.org)

Again, the virus is called NAVIDAD.EXE and arrives as an attachment to
possibly an otherwise innocent email, probably from someone you know. If
you find this attachment in an email you receive... DO NOT OPEN THE
ATTACHMENT. If you delete the attachment and the email it arrived in BEFORE
you open the attachment, nothing will happen and you will NOT be infected.

Keep a watchful eye out for this virus and DO NOT OPEN AN ATTACHMENT CALLED
NAVIDAD.EXE received via email even if the email is from someone you know.

Best regards,

Mike Zets

To all...

There are two important issues that, as members of USNA-Net, you should be
aware of.

First...

It has come to my attention that one of our members has been sending
unsolicited email to other members from a Hotmail Address which this
offending member has chosen to use as an alias (to hide their real identity)
in which this member reprimands another member for something said in an
email sent to our lists. This is strictly against our Rules of Operation
and will result in this member's removal from our services WHEN (not if)
this person is identified.

REPRIMANDS AND WARNINGS ARE SOLELY THE FUNCTION OF YOUR MODERATORS! This
person is NOT one of your Moderators and does not speak for USNA-Net, its
Moderators, or any of our more than 1,500 member families.

This "PHANTOM" Moderator has been using the alias of
parentadvise@hotmail.com and a formal complaint on behalf all of our members
has been lodged with Hotmail. In the meantime, if you have received any
email from this person, consider the fact that this person has chosen to
hide behind an alias in order to send their "advice." Just IGNORE IT. You
don't need advice from someone who will not use their real name.

Second...

Try as we may to help our members and to be of as great a service as
possible, there are still those bad apples who have no compulsion to abide
by our Rules, insisting that they apply to others but not them - far from
the Honor Concept which the Academy instills in our sons and daughters.

Sandi and I can attest to the fact that many of you have successfully found
tickets to THE game through the use of our MEMBERS ONLY Classified Ads.
Unfortunately, one of our members decided that MEMBERS ONLY was for other
members (not for them) and placed an ad in our Classified Ads for a friend.
The friend belongs to the same Local Parents' Club as "our" USNA-Net member
but is NOT a member of our lists.

As if it were not bad enough that one of our very own members severely
breached our Rules and placed an ad for a non-member, the ad was for tickets
to A/N and the non-member was actually able to obtain two ticket in this
manner while there are still REAL members out there who are looking for
tickets.

The USNA-Net member who placed the ad for the friend has been permanently
REMOVED from all of our lists and will not be reinstated. Further, the
friend is also banned from ever becoming a member.

We regret this situation and promise all of you that we will do everything
in our power to monitor our Ads more closely to insure that this will not
happen again. We now get immediate email notification of EVERY ad placed in
our Classifieds and will ensure that each and every one of them is BY a
member - FOR a member.

Rest assured that all of the remaining ads currently on our Classifieds are
REAL and have been placed by bona fide members of USNA-Net.

Again, we apologize to those who are still looking for tickets for the fact
that two tickets escaped our circle of USNA-Net members. As they say...
"Sir! No Excuse, Sir!" We're sorry. It will not happen again.

In case you're still looking for tickets, there are several different sets
