To all Current USNA-Net Listserver members...

USNA-Net, through its WP.Org sponsorship is now officially a 501(C)(3)
Non-Profit Organization. Your past donations beginning in June 1998 may now
be officially deducted as legitimate non-profit donations.

Although you may have received this notification earlier today, I have
become aware that it did not reach all of our members. So here it is again.
If you have any questions on this or need supporting documentation, please
contact Dick Breakiron directly at the address below.

Thanks again for helping make WP.Org and USNA-Net a big success. We could
never have done it without your support.

================================================================
This Newsletter is sent to all members of our USNA-Net Listservers. It is
published approximately three times each month and is intended to provide
insight into our service, answers to Frequently Asked Questions, and
Technical Assistance and Information to our membership.
================================================================

1. New Members Galore

With the budding of Spring Flowers comes the latest crop of Plebe Parents.
Beginning on March 1st we began subscribing all those newbie parents who
have heard about us and asked to be added to our lists - over 100 new
families in the first few days. Sandi and I deliberately held up those new
members who requested membership until March to reduce the repetition of
questions earlier this year but it will be inevitable as we add the families
of the Class of '05.

You can help in several ways. First - Be patient with the newbies. We were
all new at this at one time. Next - Remember that the new members don't all
come in at once. We will be constantly adding new '05 members from now
until sometime next fall and beyond. So please remember that questions
asked today will not be seen by members who join in April or May. They WILL
be asked again. And again.

Another way to help is to spread the word to incoming Parents in your local
Parents' Club as soon as possible about what USNA-Net is and how to join in.
The sooner we get all those Class of '05 Newbies signed up the better for
everyone. Give them our web site address (www.USNA-Net.org ) and have them
click on "How to Subscribe" in the Main Menu on the left of the main page.

2. How USNA-Net is Organized

EVERYONE is a member of our "Master List - USNA-Net." However, only your
Moderators may actually use this list to communicate with all of the
membership. Use of our other lists by our members is dictated by the topic
of the email...
USNA-Family is for General Topics of interest to ALL members.
USNA-Plebe must be used for PLEBE topics.
USNA-Sports is used for anything related to NAVY Sports.
USNA-ClubNet is a special list with limited enrollment for the use of
Parents' Club Officers, Chairpersons, Newsletter Editors and Webmasters.
It's used to discuss fundraising, member recruitment, Social Event planning,
and so on between Officers and Chairs of Parents' Clubs across the nation.
USNA-00 is a list of Class of 2000 Parents who use it to keep in touch
following Commissioning last summer. We'll do this later this summer for
the Class of 2001 Parents who want to stay in touch.

That's the what. Here's the who...
Almost everyone is subscribed to USNA-Family. We currently have over 1,600
families on this list and by the end of this summer, we will probably have a
whole lot more enrolled. 1,100 of these same families currently belong to
USNA-Plebe. Only about half of these are actually Plebe Parents. The rest
of those 1,100 families are upper-class parents who remained on USNA-Plebe
after the end of their Mid's Plebe year to act as Mentors to the next class
parents. We would hope that the majority of our '04 Parents will hang in
there with USNA-Plebe after Herndon this year to pass on their advice and
knowledge to the Class of '05. There's nothing more rewarding than sharing
what you learned with others who need your advice and council.

Since everyone is on multiple lists, we ask that you take care to never send
the same message to more than one list. Rather, carefully pick the right
list to use and send your message to the target audience that will most be
able to help.

Then there's USNA-Sports. With over 850 families subscribed, its' THE place
where you can ask for the results of a la Crosse game, plan a tailgate
get-together or read about anything and everything related to NAVY sports.
Since emails about Sports are restricted to USNA-Sports in the same way
Plebe topics must remain on USNA-Plebe, this list is the ONLY place for
Army/Navy stuff when that time comes around this fall.

If you're not on a list that you want to participate in, drop us an email at
mzets@mail.com and we'll add you in a day or so.

3. Email Delivery Problems

Every day, Sandi and I receive several hundred (No kidding! Today we got
almost 400!) email messages from the Internet Email System notifying us of a
problem with the delivery of some particular message or other from one of
our lists to this or that member. It's to be expected with as many members
as we have and with so many messages being sent on the Family and Plebe
listservers lately. We're NOT complaining but there are a few things you
can do to help minimize the problem.

First - PLEASE CHECK YOUR EMAIL at least every other day. Full mailboxes
are our biggest headache. When your mailbox is full, we get a message from
your Internet Service Provider (ISP) for every message that we attempt to
send to you which tells us that your mailbox is full and that the ISP will
continue to attempt delivery for anywhere from two to five days. At the end
of that time, if the message is still not delivered, we get a final message
telling us that delivery failed and we should resend it. We don't, of
course, that would be too much to keep track of, especially since your box
is probably still full and the "re-sent" message would also not be
delivered. All of this is VERY IMPORTANT for those members who do not use a
regular ISP but use hotmail.com or yahoo.com or AOL.com instead. These
"portal" services severely restrict the amount of email you may leave on
their server and these mailboxes fill very fast.

Secondly - Make sure that you instruct your email program to delete old
messages from your server after you've downloaded them to your home or
office computer. Leaving them on the server is a sure way to fill even the
biggest mailbox.

Lastly, make sure to let us know when you change email addresses. We have
no way to know that you've left AOL and gone to a local ISP unless you tell
us. Drop us an email and we'll get the change made in a few clicks of our
mouse.

If we continue to receive Delivery Problem Notices for your account for too
long, we'll have no choice but to remove your address from our lists. We
actually have to do this for about a dozen members each year. We attempt to
call you first but if we can't reach you and resolve the problem, your
address is toast. That's why we insist on phone numbers in our subscription
application. Without a phone number and with a full mailbox, there's no way
to tell you to check your mail.

4. How we deal with Problem Members

With as many members and as much message traffic as we currently have, it is
inevitable that we will have some members who manage to bump, bend or break
our Rules of Operation. These infractions may be as innocent as sending a
message in Rich Text or posting to the wrong list. OR they may be very
serious breaches which demand much more serious attention. In every case,
either Sandi or I will handle the situation PRIVATELY with the offending
member. Warnings and reprimands are never shared with the lists. And when
I say "every case," that's what I mean. Just because you never hear about
it that doesn't mean that we're not on top of everything. If YOU bump, bend
or break a rule, expect to hear from Sandi or me.

Also, just because you see something posted on our lists, that doesn't mean
that it's OK!!! Sandi and I do not have the ability to see, approve and
pass along every message that gets posted. We see them at the same time as
everyone else on the lists, unabridged. That's also why I sometimes have to
step in and stop a certain message thread because continued discussion would
be in violation of one of our Rules.

Most violations get a reminder/warning message from your Moderator. More
serious breaches will result in the offending member's posting privileges
being suspended for a period of time. Our most serious offenders are
permanently removed from our lists. This may even happen on the first
offense if the violation warrants it.

All this talk about Rules Violations may cause a few of our members to not
want to post for fear of some sort of punishment for a Rules Violation. Let
me assure you that this is the last thing you should be concerned with. In
over two years, we have removed only 14 members for gross violations. That
means that there are still 1,611 families that have NOT been removed for
breaking a rule. They have sent over 10,000 email messages and shared
advice and experiences with thousands of other members each and every day
without ever once hearing from the Moderators. Our Rules are very clear and
plainly explained on our web site. They provide the structure which allows
us to continue to operate so well for so long. Please continue to use this
network to share your NAVY experience with your fellow USNA-Net members.

5. Plain Text Solution for AOL 6.0 and Other Email Clients

As previously advised in this newsletter, AOL's new Version 6.0 still cannot
be used to send email in Plan Text (ASCII) format. All email sent using
Version 6.0 will normally be sent in Rich Text Format (RTF) which gives our
archives fits and causes problems for some of our members with older email
software including those members using WebTV and certain other email
clients.

To send in Plain Text using AOL Version 6.0, AOL recommends this method...

Make sure your font is set to Arial (which should be the default).
Type your message (in Arial) and then HIGHLIGHT IT.
Then, Right Mouse Click, select "Text," then select "Normal."
You may now send your message in Plain Text.

For those of you that use other email software who want to insure that you
send all your USNA-Net messages in Plain Text, please look for your email
program at...

www.geocities.com/CapitolHill/1236/nomime.html

There are 32 different email programs/versions discussed there with explicit
instructions for sending in Plain Text. Just click on the link above and
scroll down to YOUR program in the list which follows the introductory text.

There is also a more complete explanation and solution for the Version 6.0
problem there.

6. We're not www.USNA.edu or www.USNA.com or www.NavySports.com

It's time again for a little clarification. I want you all to realize that
USNA-Net is NOT officially linked or affiliated with the United States Navy,
the United States Naval Academy, the United States Naval Academy Athletic
Association or the USNA Foundation (formerly known as the USNA Alumni
Association). We are a private, not-for-profit organization operated by
volunteers for the support and betterment of Parents of Midshipmen enrolled
at the US Naval Academy. We have an increasingly good, working relationship
with these organizations and look forward to many more happy years of
cooperation and mutual benefit. More than a few of the Staff at USNA are
members of our listservers, offering official input on a timely basis on
topics within their scope of knowledge when the need arises.

BUT, I'd like to remind our membership that we are not responsible for any
of the published content of the web sites of these organizations.
www.usna.edu is the official web site of the Academy - www.USNA.com is the
official web site of the Foundation - www.NavySports.com is the web site for
the Athletic Association - and while we link transparently to many of their
pages from our own web site, we cannot affect any changes or corrections to
their pages. The pages on their site to which we most often link are the
USNA Calendars and the List of Club Officers for local Parents' Clubs. All
of these links may be found in our Site Index if you are interested.

Thanks for your time and continued interest in all things USNA.

Please bear with us...the system is coughing out old messages, sending them
out over and over again. We are trying to get to the bottom of this
problem. Please try to be patient and just use that old delete key until we
can fix it.

Looks like all three of the lists (Family, Plebe and Sports) are affected.

Sorry about this.

To all,

Please be patient. Yesterday, the technicians at WP-Org assured us that the
problem had been fixed. Apparently, it has not been. I can assure you that
this duplication problem is being looked into by some extremely
knowledgeable people.

Mike and I hate to shut down the lists again, like we did on Saturday. What
we have decided to do is keep things as they are and hope that you members
will be patient, delete the duplicates and bear with us until we can get
this problem fixed.

We will do everything that we can to get this glitch fixed as soon as we
possibly can!

Please be patient - nothing is infallible.

================================================================
USNA-Net Newsletter March 20, 2001
================================================================

In this issue...
     1. Items searched for in the Site Index
     2. New Virus Alerts
     3. Forwarding emails
     4. New on the Website

================================================================
This Newsletter is sent to all members of our USNA-Net Listservers. It is
published approximately three times each month and is intended to provide
insight into our service, answers to Frequently Asked Questions, and
Technical Assistance and Information to our membership.
================================================================

1. Items searched for in the Site Index

Let's see what you have been searching for this past month.

***Midshipman names and/or alpha codes
You cannot locate information concerning individual Mids by searching for
their names or alpha codes. NO Midshipman names are on the USNA-Net
Website. A few parent's names are listed (those who have shared photos on
the Photo Gallery Page or shared prose and poetry on the Family Interests
page) - but this is all.

***academic schedules
All Dates for Events are listed under CALENDARS. These links from our Site
Index go directly to the USNA Website.

***summer schedule
You will not find summer block scheduling on the USNA-Net Website. If you
want to find out about summer schedules, this is the page on the USNA
Website:
http://prodevweb.prodev.usna.edu/IMIS/Summer/summerhome.htm

***commissioning week
Once again, the Naval Academy Website is the place to go.
http://www.usna.edu/PAO/comwkinfo.htm
On this page is all information on Commissioning Week, including a link to
the tentative schedule for the entire week.

***shoulder boards
You can go to the USNA-Net Website - www.navy-usna.org and click onto
Parents' Handbook from the menu items at the left of the page. On the Plebe
Summer page you will find graphics of the shoulder boards worn by
Midshipmen.

***business card
On the main page of the website directly under the Go Navy Beat Army flags
you will find: "Please help us to help other parents... Click here to find
out how." If you click "here" you will find a graphic that you can print
out and fold into business card size to pass on to others.

2. Virus Alerts

Recently we have seen one called "NakedWife.exe" and one called
"AVP-Updates.exe" You can look on the USNA-Net Website under Frequent
Questions for links to information on real and hoax virus alerts. There
will always be someone out there who finds it fun to disrupt or destroy
other's computers. NEVER...let me repeat this...NEVER, EVER open an
attachment on an email - especially look for .exe files, .vbs files, .xls
files. The worst thing about most of the email virus attacks is that they
generally come from someone YOU KNOW. Your friend or business associate
will not even be aware that they are infected...and that their computer is
sending these virus attachments to all of the addresses in their address
book. That's the way these viruses work. And of course, the best
protection you can have is to buy, install, AND USE a good Virus Protection
Program.

  3. Forwarding emails

We all get jokes and such from friends over the Internet. How many times
have you opened an email from a friend only to find you have to open another
email and another email and still ANOTHER email until you actually get to
the joke? Or the email is sooooo long and filled with a hundred names and
email addresses that you have to wade through to find the joke??? But the
joke is sooooo cute, soooo funny that you want to send it to YOUR friends.
What do you do? Do you forward the original? If you do. bad, bad emailer!!
Keep your emails to others as short and concise as you can. Cut and paste
the joke into a new email and send it along. DO NOT forward the original,
along with all the previous email addresses, to your friends!! And NEVER
send jokes or poetry to the USNA-Net Lists!!

 4. New on the Website

There have been several changes and additions to the Website since my last
Newsletter.
a.) Menu Changes...Mike has added a link to the USNA and Navy Wallpaper to
the menu items. He has also segregated the links that require passwords:
Archives, Classifieds and Chat Room. You will see them listed together with
"Members Only" beside them.
b.) Dave Ayotte wrote a great quote in a recent post to the lists. He
wrote: Naval Academy Parent... Its not just a job, its an ADVENTURE! I
loved it, and created a graphic that I added to the Main page of the
USNA-Net website just above the Go Navy Beat Army flags. Thanks, Dave!!
c.) On the Countdown Clocks page, I have removed Spring Break and added
"I-Day." All you Class of 2005 parents...you can keep track of the days,
hours and minutes until your sons or daughters begin their adventure at the
Naval Academy!
d.) Take a look on the Photo Gallery page. Just above the lists of photos
I have added a phrase about "roller coasters" that I think you will ALL
enjoy!

Go Navy, Beat Army!

To all,

Just a quick note (in light of the two Flub-Ups in the past 24 hours) about
how to handle changes in your subscription...

Address all requests for changes to owner-usna-net@navy-usna.org

This includes ADDING, REMOVING or CHANGING any email address associated with
receiving anything from ANY of our lists.

No matter if you are adding, removing or changing anything, you MUST send us
the request FROM the address under which you are CURRENTLY subscribed. That
way we know it really is you who is requesting the change.

For changes in email address, please remember to include your old address
P:US your new one and try to remember to sign your request with your name,
it saves us having to look it up. And please, keep it short. We really
don't need an explanation about why you want to make the change or be
removed, just let us know what to do and we'll take care of it within a few
hours in most cases.

Whatever you do... PLEASE, DON"T SEND YOUR REQUEST TO OUR ENTIRE LIST!!!
That's just not the way these things are done. All administrative requests
(and/or comments) are to be sent to your Moderators privately at
owner-usna-net@navy-usna.org.

Thanks again...

By the way... It's not OUR fault that you haven't gone to your mailbox for
over two weeks and then find 100+ messages from our lists waiting for
download. Check your mail more often and it won't seem so overwhelming when
you do. We're a chatty bunch and we generate a whole lot of information.
If your mailbox fills up and we can't send mail to your address for more
than a few days, your email address will automatically be deleted from ALL
of our lists. Just thought I'd pass that on but waiting for automatic
deletion is NOT the polite way of removing yourself from our lists.
