USNA-Net Newsletter June 2, 2001
================================================================

In this issue...
     1. Where are all of the '05 Parents?
     2. You got your Moderator in Trouble...
     3. Chat Room Hours
     4. That "Other" Sports List
     5. What we are all about...
     6. Rule Reasons - Midshipman Privacy

================================================================
This Newsletter is sent to all members of our USNA-Net Listservers. It's
published approximately three times each month and is intended to provide
insight into our service, answers to Frequently Asked Questions, and
Technical Assistance and Information to our membership.
================================================================

    1. Where are all of the '05 Parents?

As I-Day approaches, I'm beginning to wonder if you are all doing your jobs
as good members out there in CyberSpace. You're supposed to be finding and
recruiting the Parents of the Class of 2005 BEFORE their Plebes-to-be go off
to Plebe Summer. You all know that our USNA-Plebe list does the most good
for those Parents who get in early.

June is the month when most Parents' Clubs have some sort of Plebe send off
event. Whether it's a Picnic or a Brunch or whatever, the club gets
together to pass on whatever advice they have to the new Parents and the
Plebes-to-be. This is the perfect time to make sure that all of the Parents
know about USNA-Net and have our Web Site address for when they get home to
their computers.

We can't make it any easier. Our web address is our name...
www.USNA-Net.org. Just remember the dash in the middle. Or if you want, go
to our site and scroll to the bottom of the main page to where it says
"Please help us to help other parents... Click here to find out how."
There you will find several options to print out our USNA-Net Business Card
to pass out to those new parents you will meet this month or at I-Day
itself. WE NEED YOU TO TELL OTHERS ABOUT US!

    2. You got your Moderator in Trouble...

With a Capital "T" and that rhymes with "C" and that stands for Care
Packages.

It seems that our members know "too much" according to a few staff members
at the Academy... at least with regard to care packages during Plebe
Summer! Last year, the Bancroft Post Office was deluged with more care
packages than could be processed in a timely fashion and we, the humble
USNA-Net members that we are, were blamed. Of course, this could never have
been because Parents' Clubs across the country routinely tell their members
to send Care Packages. :>)

I have to admit that before USNA-Net started telling everyone about Care
Packages, parents didn't know nearly as much about WHAT to send or WHEN to
send it but we knew it was important to send extras via Care Packages during
the summer.

So let's review... If you accompany your Plebe to I-Day, you're to leave
one small package at the Main Office in Bancroft before you leave that day.
Then you should US Mail another one in Annapolis before you leave the city
so that it arrives a few days later. Then you might want to send a few more
over the next six week so that your Mid will eventually have everything
he/she needs to make it through the summer. For more advice on "what" to
send, see our Parents Handbook on the Web Site at www.USNA-Net.org. And
don't forget to LISTEN when your Plebe tells you what they need in that
first or second phone call to home.

    3. Chat Room Hours

I keep getting asked why there is never anyone in the Chat Room by members
who log in and find the Room empty. Well, we're all a little too busy to
hang around waiting on the chance that others will log in while we're there.
It's understandable. In order to help I thought that we'd try using the
Room again with some sort of UNOFFICIAL schedule in mind. Now understand
that this is just a suggestion and if you happen to want to chat and it's
not the suggested time, you can still use it whenever and for whatever you
want. Remember, there are no rules inside the Chat Room except to be civil
to each other.

Perhaps we could establish the following times for members who want to
chat...

Plebe Related Chat Monday - Wednesday - Friday 10:00 PM
Eastern
Upper Class Parents Tuesday - Thursday 10:00 PM Eastern
General "Open" Chat Saturday & Sunday 3:00 PM 7:00PM
10:00 PM Eastern

The above is meant to be suggested times as to WHO should show up NOT WHAT
should be talked about. The Chat room is NOT monitored and members may use
it to discuss anything, Navy Related or not. It's up to those who
participate.

A couple of reminders on how the Chat Room operates. Use of the Chat Room
is restricted to USNA-Net Members Only. So when you are inside the Chat
Room , you are among friends.

Once you provide the Password and sign in, you will enter the group
discussion that is in progress at that time. You cannot go back to before
the moment you entered to read what others said before you arrived.

Others will know you arrived because your name will appear in the list on
the right of the screen. Say hello if you want or wait and read a few
minutes of conversation first before you jump into the fray.

Remember that the Chat Room isn't instantaneous. It takes a moment to send
the text to the other participants and then for them to type a response.
Please be patient.

You can type very long lines of text and THEN hit the Enter key to send your
response. The space in the Chat Room where you type your messages is only a
modest length. If you keep on typing without hitting the Enter Key, your
message will automatically "wrap" to the next line on the screen when it is
sent. Hit the ENTER Key ONLY to send your complete response

If the room is too full, you may not be able to enter. Try again in a few
minutes. If you get inside and there is someone you wish to speak to
privately, you can initiate a Private Chat. Just follow the directions on
the Help screen at the top of the Room. You'll get the hang of it. It's a
lot like IM-ing.

Enjoy. Just remember to say "Goodbye" when you leave.

     4. That "Other" Sports List

For all of the newcomers, I'd like to remind you that the Academy's Athletic
Department operates a broadcast only Listserver for the dissemination of all
sorts of information about USNA Sports News. It sends out at least three or
four announcements each week during the "off" season and several each day
during the peak season during the AC year. This is NOT to be confused with
our USNA-Sports listserver which is open to member participation just like
all of our other lists and provides our members with the ability to write
back and forth about Sports stuff.

To subscribe to this "Other" sports list, just send an email IN PLAIN TEXT
FORMAT to
subscribe-navysports-mids@maillist.usna.edu from the email address at
which you wish to receive the postings.

This "other" list is a great source of information and often contains
in-depth interviews with the coaches and team members. It covers all sorts
of sports information for those members whose Mids participate in everything
from archery to wrestling. It's not just for Navy Football Fans.

     5. What we are all about...

I wanted to revisit a discussion I had a few months back. USNA-Net is an
Advice and Support Network of Parents. That's all. Nothing more and
nothing less. We're here to help other Parents with their problems and
concerns. We're not here to share jokes or recipes. We're not here to find
Roommates or fellow Company Parents. We're not here to discuss Academy
Policy. And most of all, we're not here to Chat back and forth on the
Lists.

Before we take to the keyboard, we need to ask ourselves if what we are
about to write is really something that should be addressed to the whole
membership or is it just so much chatter or fluff. Now, I'm not talking
about members who post their adventures or observations about their visits
to the Yard or activities that most members would want to hear about. This
part of our lists is valued by all of us who can't get to the yard often or
ever. I AM talking about messages that should have been sent to only one
member. I AM talking about "Are you out there" messages. I AM talking
about messages that don't relate to USNA.

Just remember that Chat belongs in the Chat room and we don't want to bother
all 1,700+ members with too many "chatty" messages each day. If we do, too
many members will tune us out and won't be there when the topics get heavy
and we need all the help and advice we can get.

(If you want to locate a specific member, write to either Sandi or me and we
can look them up and pass your email address along to the person you want to
contact. Chances are the parent you're looking for is not a member since we
only have about 1 in 3 of all of the Parents out there as members.
remember, we will never give out your membership information under any
circumstances.)

     6. Rule Reasons - Midshipman Privacy

In every Newsletter we try to explain a little more about one of our Rules
of Operation so that our members feel more comfortable using our services.
Today I want to review what is probably our Most Important Rule - our
Privacy Rule. It's fairly long and so I'll take it one section at a time.
Please notice the use of quotes to signify the text of the actual rule.

"Rule #5. Rights to Privacy
- Information and/or the contents of email posted on any of our lists is
private and must not be distributed to non-members under any circumstances.
This is especially important regarding email address and other personal
information about list members."

While this part is pretty straight forward, it is probably the most violated
of our Rules and the one that is the hardest to detect and prevent. A few
members routinely forward messages, either in whole or in part, to
non-members. This is ABSOLUTELY against our Rules. If someone wants to
read our messages, let them join our Listservers. That way your Moderators
can control those who have access to our correspondence. If you know of
anyone who is routinely forwarding postings to non-members, I urge you to
let us know so that we can put a stop to it.

"- User Names and Passwords may not be shared with any non-member."

Again, membership has it's privileges and only members should have access to
our Archives, our Chat Room and our Classified Ads which are all password
protected.

"- Personal information regarding Midshipmen should not be broadcast without
the permission of the individual Midshipman concerned. Midshipmen are
adults and they have a right to privacy.
- A Midshipman's and his/her family's right to privacy are paramount and
should be considered prior to ANY reference in a message, especially, in the
case of a death, serious medical or personal situation involving a
Midshipman or his/her family."

We can never discuss any Midshipman by name or otherwise give out
information about a Mid on our lists without that Mid's permission - even
your OWN Mid. Their Privacy is Paramount.

- All parents should be aware that Listserver messages and information might
inadvertently be shared with Midshipmen via email or telephone conversations
to the Yard. While passing any Listserver messages back to Midshipmen is
prohibited, each parent has the responsibility to not broadcast items IN THE
FIRST PLACE that might have a negative impact on their (or any other)
Midshipman."

Just in case you forgot... YOUR MID IS NOT A MEMBER! Mids are NOT allowed
to join our Listservers. They are NOT permitted to read or participate in
our Listservers in ANY way. We discuss too many things which might prove to
be embarrassing to a Mid or might influence how he/she is treated by other
Midshipmen. Do you really want your Plebe's Detailer to know that he has a
fear of spiders or used to run around in the buff when she was two. Assume
that everything written to our lists WILL be passed to other Mids and you'll
never have a problem with your Mid complaining about what YOU write to the
lists.

To those that feel that this is not an important Rule, I have this to say.
In the two plus years that Sandi and I have been the Moderators for these
lists, we have removed only a few members for Rules Violations. The largest
percentage of those sent packing, however, were removed for violating THIS
rule. When we do find a member in violation of this rule, there are NO
WARNINGS, NO SECOND CHANCES, NO TEMPORARY SUSPENSIONS. You are removed
immediately and permanently. We will not abide any member passing personal
information about Mids or members to anyone outside our membership. Period.

Now this is where common sense comes in. We don't want to prevent you from
sharing information you gained from our lists with your Mid about "how to
spit shine his shoes" or the address of a great link on the Internet that
you know she would love to visit or when tickets go on sale, etc. This sort
of thing is harmless and you should feel free to share it with your Mid.
Just DON'T FORWARD ENTIRE MESSAGES with email addresses and everything else
attached. "Cut and Paste" the information portion of the message ONLY so
that you maintain the Privacy of our members and their Mids.

Just remember... NEVER share private information about our Members or our
Mids with ANYONE!

Until next time...

To our dear Navy Parents...

I hope that this will be the last plea which I have to make. We are at 91%
of our goal with 295 Navy Donors having given something to this Fund Drive.

We only ask that you give if you can and we certainly don't want to be a
burden to anyone's personal finances but if you meant to send in something
and have been putting it off, PLEASE send it in today.

Stop what you're doing and write out that check or visit our on-line
donation site before you forget to do it again. We need YOUR support. If
you won't help, this service may not be here when you need us in the future.

If we've helped you over the past six months... If we've been here when you
needed support or encouragement... Or if we've just been here to remind you
that you're not alone with your concerns and problems, then please repay
some of that help and support with a donation of a few dollars to offset our
operating costs for the next six months.

I look at the numbers - 1,694 members total - and I know that there are at
least another 100 or so families out there who can spare $10 or $20. It's
not like that will break the bank.

(By the way... If all of the AOL members out there would just follow my
advice and dump AOL ($21.95 per month) for a local Internet Service Provider
($9.95 per month), you'd save at least $12 EACH MONTH! We could run this
whole shee-bang for that. There are over 640 AOL members on our lists -
times $12 per month comes out to over $92,000 per year. <Grin!> From what
I can tell, you must really like spending those big bucks and reading all of
those advertisements every time you log on.) Pardon me for getting carried
away.

Anyway... If you meant to send in a donation but have put it off, please
don't wait any longer. You may donate on-line using our SECURE SERVER at

https://www-secure.west-point.org/wporg/donate

When using the On-Line Donation web site, PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU SELECT "NAVY"
AS THE AFFILIATION so that USNA-Net is properly credited for your donation.

OR

If you prefer to make your donation using a check, make it out to WP-ORG and
mail via Regular US Mail to:

WP-ORG (Designate NAVY on the memo line)
PO Box 2108
Abingdon, VA 24212-2108

(All donations are 100% tax deductible and subject to matching funds from
some employers.)

ONE LAST THING...

NAVY PARENTS have donated $11,460 to date.
ARMY PARENTS have donated $10,735 !!!

We're ahead of Army for the first time in any fund drive and you have to
remember that they have about 300 more member families than we do. I'd love
to KEEP the lead with a last minute surge of final donations from YOU to aid
our NAVY family.

Thanks for doing what you can...

Go NAVY - Beat Army !!!

insight into our service, answers to Frequently Asked Questions, and
Technical Assistance and Information to our membership.
================================================================

    1. USNA-Net Business Cards for Recruiting.

As most of the Parents' Clubs around the country are having a local event
(either a picnic or brunch or something) to meet and greet the incoming new
'05 members, I'd like to remind everyone that you can find a "Printable"
USNA-Net Business Card on our web site for your use in telling new members
about us. Just print out a few cards, and pass them out to whoever you tell
about USNA-Net.

Go to our main web page on our site at www.USNA-Net.org and scroll down to
the bottom of the main page. You'll find a link there entitled "Help us to
help other parents. Click here to find out how." Click on that link and
you'll be taken to a page with our Business Card on it. Either print out
that page and cut out the card OR scroll down to the bottom of that page for
links to a printable web page with four cards on it OR a Word Document that
you can print out using your word processor.

Just remember to tell EVERYONE you meet about USNA-Net including Upper Class
Parents. It's FREE and you don't have to be a member of a local Parents'
Club to join our lists. We've even adopted new, easier to remember Web
Addresses ..
www.USNA-Net.org OR www.USNANet.org to make it even easier to tell potential
members about where to find us. Just remember the name of our Organization
and you've remembered our web address... USNA-Net.Org

     2. Navy is stomping Army !

Navy - $13,177.04 from 350 Donors Way to go NAVY!
Army - $11,400.00 from 284 Donors

As of this morning, our Navy Parents have pushed a little further ahead of
the Army Parents in the fund raiser. Actually, we're stomping the heck out
of them. Thanks to all for sending in those donations.

It seems that the Army Parent Moderator is becoming rather embarrassed by
the fact that Navy is ahead and pulling away. We've always given more than
our share but this drive we're out donating the Army Parents and they have
over 300 more parents on their lists from which to draw donations. Despite
her challenge to her members to kick Navy booty they are taking a back seat
to our Parents.

To view the NAVY donations to date, click on
http://lazarus.west-point.org/wporg/donate/report/1,2107,6,00.html

Then to see the Army Parent Donations to date, click on the link in the
middle of the page that says "Parent" - that's the Army Parents NOT Navy
Parents. Our Navy Parents are all combined under the NAVY listings.

To donate on-line visit https://www-secure.west-point.org/wporg/donate and
be sure to specify NAVY under Affiliation. It's safe, SECURE and very easy
to use.

     3. Finding a Local ISP

A number of you have asked for a little help in finding a local Internet
Service Provider (ISP) in your area. Okay. Here's how...
    a. Local Newspapers usually feature some sort of Internet or Computer
news and/or column once a week or so. Look for ISP's to advertise in that
section of the paper on the day the paper runs the computer column. If not
your local daily, then perhaps your Regional Weekly will feature something.
    b. Supermarket Tabloids are available in some areas around the county
aimed at Computer Types and will be a storehouse of advertisements from the
local ISPs. These tabloids are of the free variety usually located where
the real estate people have their listings near the exit.
    c. Local YELLOW PAGES will have ISP's listed under "Internet." In
Cleveland, we have three pages of display ads for local ISP's in our Yellow
Pages with several display ads claiming $9.95 per month service.
    d. The really large book stores will usually have a copy of a soft
bound book called "A Guide to Internet Service Providers" (or something like
that). It's an inch thick and printed on recycled paper but it lists all of
the ISP's across the country by telephone area code and gives tips on how to
select between ISP's in your area.
    e. There is a web page (isn't there one for everything these days?)
that discusses all of the do's and don't's of finding a local ISP. You'll
find it at http://net.gurus.com/isp/. This site includes a link to
http://thelist.internet.com/ which will list the local ISP's in your
telephone area code and also help you find a host for your web site if you
wish.

     4. We're not the Naval Academy...

Just a quick word to those of you who have grown really accustomed to the
high level of support that you can get from USNA-Net. Sure we know a lot
about the Naval Academy and what it means to be a parent of a Midshipman BUT
please remember that we are NOT the Naval Academy. We can't answer specific
questions about things that are specifically related to the Administration
or Operations of the Academy.

We can tell you what to expect at PPW but we can't tell you why your Mid has
to stand watch at a particular time. We can help you understand Plebe
Summer but we don't know if your Mid will have to have extra vaccinations
upon arrival. We don't have a pipeline to Admissions so asking us why you
haven't gotten this or that form is a hopeless cause. We don't know or set
policy at the Academy. The Academy does.

We're here to help and support as many parents in as many ways as possible
but when it comes to Administrative Policy or technicalities, we just don't
know. Your best bet is to HAVE YOUR MID DEAL WITH THE SITUATION! As a
parent, you are very peripheral to all of the happenings at the Yard. As a
Midshipmen, it is their responsibility to deal with everything related to
their particular situation. You have to stop trying to do stuff for them.

     5. Leaving USNA-Plebe? Here's how.

For all of our Upper Class parents who have been a member of USNA-Plebe and
now wish to be removed from THAT list, please send a PLAIN TEXT message to

<majordomo@navy-usna.org>.

No Subject.

In the body of the message type "unsubscribe usna-plebe" (without the
quotes). DO NOT TYPE ANYTHING ELSE! That's all that is needed. Anything
more messes it up.

This message must come from the exact email address under which you are
subscribed. That's all there is to it and you'll save Sandi and me a whole
lot time and trouble if you do this yourself.

We hope that lots of '04 Parents will stick around in the same way the '03
Parents did for you at this time last year. Mentoring '05's is a great
morale booster for those Plebes-No-More '04 Parents out there. Without
Upper Class Parents on the Plebe list, it will be the blind leading the
blind and that's NOT what USNA-Net is all about.

     6. Rule Reasons - No Religious References

For some of our members making Religious References in their postings to the
lists is as second nature as breathing. We have to remember, however, that
our membership crosses over lots of ethnic and religious boundaries. We are
Christians, Jews, Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists and many others. What is
certain and natural to some is foreign and offensive to others. Where do we
draw the line? What is Okay? We've found over the years that we have the
best success with a hard and fast rule that NO religious references are
permitted, not even in the most casual manner.

Can you mention attending a service at the Chapel? Yes but you shouldn't go
into detail about the sermon or how inspired you were to put your faith in
"-----" after the service. Was the Choir inspiring? Tell everyone but
don't quote scripture to our lists. We ask that you use sound judgment and
think about your postings before you send them.

Basically, Sandi and I try very hard to maintain a SECULAR Listservice where
members of any faith (or none at all) may find help and support through the
friendship of other parents. A zero tolerance policy has been adopted on
religious references as well as profanity, discriminatory and sexual
references. I hope this helps all of us to understand the Reason behind
the Rule.

To all,

NAVY PARENTS have donated $14, 797.04 to date.
ARMY PARENTS have donated $14,710 !!!

Okay! I vowed that I wouldn't get sucked into a competition between Navy
Parents and Army Parents during this fund drive but I've been heckled and
even taunted into getting you to donate more than the 2,000+ Army Families
that also belong to WP-ORG.

The last straw came from Dian Welle who was the former Army Parents
Moderator until recently. She said that she would play Navy Blue and Gold
on her Army web site if Navy parents donated more than her Army Parents and
THEN proceeded to have the auditors go through and find every dollar that
even might have been donated by an Army Parent and put it into the Army
pile.

We were leading the race a week ago (before the Manipulation) by over
$2,000. After the manipulation, the lead actually went to Army Parents by a
big slug. But lo and behold, your checks have just kept coming in. We now
lead Army AGAIN but by a scant $87.00 as of this moment.

The drive is nearly over since we are at 97.77% of our goal and I just
wouldn't want that slim lead to evaporate in the last day or two.

Please!!! Help me hang on to NAVY PRIDE. Go to the web site and donate a
few bucks on-line if you haven't sent anything in this time. We are ahead
but I don't ever want to loose anything to ARMY if I can help it. I don't
just want to win. I want to win BIG!!!

As a matter of fact... We all win. Army Parents - Navy Parents - all of
us.

FD9 is over. WP-ORG has reached its goal and the tally of donations as the
finish line came and went this evening was...

ARMY Parents $14,805.00
NAVY Parents $15,317.04

Thanks to all who made this Fund Drive such a huge success. Each and every
one of you should feel very proud to have participated. We couldn't have
done it without you.

It's times like this when Sandi and I are only too glad to be part of this
fine group of Navy Parents. I'm am truly proud of you all for your help.
This is what being a Navy Parent is all about.... Helping each other when
help is needed.

You've all earned an extra Weekend this coming semester for a job well done
in this gentle victory over our friends at Army. :>)

Go NAVY!! PARENTS RULE !!

Mike and Sandi

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Please rise while the Army Parents of WP-ORG play Navy Blue and Gold on
THEIR web site...

Below is their short but oh so sweet letter of acknowledgment of their
defeat. Thanks again to all who contributed. We couldn't have done it
without every single one of you.

Go Navy!
