USNA-Net Newsletter 7/11/01
================================================================

In this issue...
     1. What's New - Big Changes in the Wind.
     2. "Are you out there" messages are a No-No
     3. Phone Schedule for the FIRST CALL.
     4. We Remove Privacy Violators without Warning.
     5. Message traffic to slow down soon.

================================================================
This Newsletter is sent to all members of our USNA-Net Listservers. It is
published approximately three times each month and is intended to provide
insight into our service, answers to Frequently Asked Questions, and
Technical Assistance and Information to our membership.
================================================================

     1. What's New - Big Changes in the Wind.

For those of you who have been having problems with Rich Text Format, we
have GREAT NEWS. In about two months, we will have a fix for the problem
that will make it possible for any of our members to send email to our lists
in ANY format without having to set anything or use any special program or
an old version of AOL.

Now don't start just yet! I said in about two months. We should have
everything set and tested by the middle of September. Please be patient
until then and continue to send in PLAIN TEXT to our lists. We'll let you
know when it is possible to forget about RTF constraints.

Along with this change, we are planning to make other minor changes from
your point of view as a member but huge from our point of view as
Moderators. We'll fill in the blanks and let you know all about it before
we turn the switch.

     2. Are you out there messages are a No-No

There are a whole lot of new members out there who want to meet others in
their Plebe's same Company , the families of your Mid's roommates or others
in your own home town or area, etc. There are right ways and wrong ways to
do that. The wrong way is to write a note that says something like...

WRONG - "Are there any other 10th Company Parents out there?"
WRONG - "Does anyone else live near Cedar Rapids?"

The correct way to do this is to properly sign your email. DON'T make other
members guess about who you are. Sign every email like this...

        Joan Smith
        Jack - 05 10th
        Cedar Rapids, IA

This way everyone will know that you are Joan and that your Mid, named Jack,
is in the 10th Company and is a member of the Class of '05. See how easy
that is?

Besides a whole lot of you are subscribed as Joan and Bill Smith. You
know - Mr. & Mrs. as one subscription. So if YOU don't write "Joan Smith"
at the bottom of YOUR email, the system will only add your standard
signature line as "Joan and Bill Smith" and no one will be able to tell if
it was Joan OR Bill who sent the message. A whole lot of Fathers write to
these lists, so never assume it is always the Mom.

Remember that we're signing up new members EVERY day at this time of year.
At the rate of about 50 per day it seems. So even if you send that "Are you
out there" message today, the parents right down the street may sign up
tomorrow and you'll never know it. By signing your email as shown above
,anyone who wants to contact you can AND we won't have literally hundreds of
these messages clogging up our inboxes every day. Please be considerate of
all of the other members who don't live down the street or are not your
Mid's roommate' parents. Most of us aren't

     3. Phone Schedule for the FIRST CALL.

For those of you who missed it or misplaced it, here is yet another copy of
the phone call schedule taken from the USNA web site.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
DATE=======DAY=======TIME===COMPANY
07/14/2001 SATURDAY 0900-0945 H, I
07/14/2001 SATURDAY 1000-1045 E, P
07/14/2001 SATURDAY 1100-1145 B, D
07/14/2001 SATURDAY 1300-1345 F
07/14/2001 SATURDAY 1500-1545 A

07/15/2001 SUNDAY 1300-1345 C, G, K
07/15/2001 SUNDAY 1400-1445 L, M, N, O

ALL TIMES ARE EASTERN DAYLIGHT TIME (EDT)
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Remember that your Plebe may call before the specified time or later OR even
the next day if he has something else which conflicts with making the call
at the prescribed time. Do not panic if the phone does not ring at exactly
the correct time and DO remember to remain UPBEAT during the call.

If you plan on recording your Mid's call, PRACTICE the procedure on another
incoming BEFORE the actual call. Too many nervous fingers have flubbed up
and disconnected the call before it even started. Don't "think" you know
how to do this. Practice it until you can do it in the dark.

Don't forget that collect calls are automated and there is no real operator
asking if you will accept the charges. A recording machine might just send
an error message or inappropriate pre-recorded message to the automated
inquiry and "refuse" the charges before you can say yes to them. This
actually happened to a parent last summer. Can you imagine the Plebe's
reaction when his home phone said NO when asked if the charges would be
accepted. PRACTICE the exact method you will use BEFORE the call comes from
your Mid.

    4. We Remove Privacy Violators. No Warnings.

Well, it happened again and I thought I'd let the rest of the list in on
what happened. No names of course but we were forced to remove another
member for allowing a non-member to have direct access to our lists. He
allowed his daughter (the Mid's sister) to read all of our messages and to
even send a message to one of our lists. The daughter was NOT a member of
the lists. Despite the fact that every email in our system for months has a
footer on it which warns members not to distribute ANY email to non-members
especially NOT to Midshipmen, this member had allowed the Mid's sister (who
was not eligible for membership because of her age) to read all of our
messages and to even send in a question to our lists.

OUR LISTS ARE FOR MEMBERS ONLY ! Period. The offending member was removed
from our lists within five minutes of us finding out about the violation and
will never be allowed to return. Sandi and I shoot first and ask questions
later. Your Privacy and the privacy of the communications on all of our
lists is paramount to the ability of our service to provide the advice and
support needed so much by our membership. If any non-member is allowed to
access these lists or read any of our email, it is a MAJOR violation of
everyone's privacy. These email messages contain sensitive information
about ourselves, our email addresses and our Mid's activities. None of this
is anyone's business but ours. Non-members are not governed by our Rules
and cannot be punished for irresponsible actions or careless gossip. It is
the responsibility of every member to keep our message traffic private.

When it comes to Privacy, there are no warnings and no second chances.

Note: This does not apply to our web site. Everyone is allowed to visit
and to read everything there EXCEPT for the Members Only areas - Our
Archives, Our Classifieds and Our Chat Room. These areas are also protected
by passwords and our Privacy Policy. Otherwise everything on the site may
be shared with anyone who wants to see what's there including the Parents
Handbook, all of the photos, wallpapers and books for recommended reading,
etc.

     5. Message traffic to slow down soon.

I took a long look at the archives with an eye toward determining the exact
volume of message traffic for the past three years. Historically, JULY is
our busiest month for messages on all lists. The cycle begins in either
December or January with the fewest number of messages and then builds
through the spring and into Plebe Summer. We will hit a new record this
month and probably exceed 3.2Mb of messages for July on all lists combined.
Last year we had 2.7Mb of messages in July but we had a whole lot fewer
Plebe parents signed up.

August is the next busiest month but then traffic falls off sharply in
September and October especially on the Plebe list with a little increased
activity on the Family list in anticipation of the Army Navy game and
because of Football discussions in general on the Sports list.

So be patient with the message volume, it will slow down in the coming
months. We're only this talkative during the dog days of summer.

Thanks for listening. If you have any questions please write directly to me

We received this note from a member:

<<<Is it okay to pass on info to our plebes about things like the suggestion
about sharing a printer with roommates and the calculators being included
this year? I won't attribute this information to any named party. Our
Plebe is expecting us to bring these things up on PPW; but after reading the
emails about them, it seems better not to.

Is this whole list supposed to be a secret? I am now very confused.>>>

Now, here's the deal. You CANNOT FORWARD messages to non-members, and this
includes your Mid. By forwarding, any private information contained in the
email stays with the email. The sender's name, email address, Mid's
name...etc are ALL included in every post.

We have no problem with you cutting and pasting (or completely re-writing) a
few lines of information received from a post and sending it to Aunt Mary,
like YP movements, the special dinner that the Mids were served, pranks
during Army/Navy week...that sort of thing.

AND, we have no problem with you sending along information that might be of
interest to your Mid - like instructions on how to spit shine his shoes, or
going to the USO in New York, or how to get to DC or Baltimore.

The general information passed on by members of our lists are NOT secrets.

BUT - and this is a big one...

If a member writes in about a Mid having problems, or about something
personal about themselves or their Mid (Mom has been sleeping in their
Plebe's bed since he left for I-Day, for example) DO NOT, under any
circumstances - pass this information along to ANYONE - and ESPECIALLY to
your Mid!!! Personal information shared with our list members IS PRIVATE,
and unless you have THAT member's permission to forward their post - YOU
CAN"T DO IT!!! It is an inexcusable invasion of their privacy. Period.

Too much harm can come from passing along sensitive information. Would YOU
want your Plebe's Detailers, or his Squad Leader to know that YOUR son
always slept with a stuffed bear? This is PERSONAL, PRIVATE information.
While it may be necessary to share some of this information when seeking
advice and support, the membership must remember that sensitive information
can never be shared with non-members.

You see, there is a "duality" of missions with USNA-Net. Support and
Information.

The "Information" aspect is just that - roommates sharing a printer, advice
on cleaning their brass, links of interest, information concerning buying
tickets... These things are GENERAL information that you or your Mid could
find someplace else, if you looked for it. This sort of information is
perfectly okay to pass along, to anyone - as long as our member's personal
information (their name, email address, etc.) is not FORWARDED with the
information.

The "Support" aspect includes personal, private, and possibly embarrassing
or damaging information that should NEVER be shared or passed on to a
non-member We all owe it to each other to protect our sons/daughters and
our fellow members from any kind of harassment or embarrassment. Sharing
THIS kind of information can easily cause both. Sharing THIS kind of
information will get you removed from out lists.

So, as with all things - there is a definite black and white on this - but
there are also shades of gray. AND, it is the job of your Moderators to see
that no one gets hurt by the unthinking, careless, callous and/or
irresponsible forwarding of posts to others. We have the final word on
this.

I hope this clears up the confusion. None of this is meant to discourage
you from using our lists, or sharing with us, every day. It's meant to
explain our rule on privacy.

It's taken awhile for me to get it done...but - if you are interested -
there are nearly 70 NEW photos of I-Day and Plebe Summer.

There are photos from four different photographers: if you see your plebe
and would be interested in a copy, you will need to contact the photographer
directly. Just click on the names after their photos to open an email
addressed to them.

First, Jerry Cook took some terrific shots on I-Day, with lots of close-up
shots of plenty of faces. Don't pass up any of these...you may just see
your Plebe! Thanks Jerry, for sending me these!!

Next, Jackie and Pete DiFranco shared some of their personal I-Day shots
with me. I have chosen four that not only show them with their son and his
sister, but a couple of others that also show other plebes. Thanks for
sharing these with us!

Next, Mike is not the only one with a camera. Although I did not get into
Alumni Hall, like he did...I managed to take a few shots that I think show
the flavor of the morning. My shots start with families gathering outside
Alumni Hall saying their farewells (is that the Commandant I see there?) -
go to the rear of Alumni Hall where parents were waiting to catch a glimpse
of their Mid - you see one tossing his gear in the bed of one of the big
stake-body trucks - you can see the Academy busses lined up to take the
plebes from Alumni Hall to Bancroft - and finally, a shot through the window
of a bus of two plebes - eyes forward - as they leave Alumni Hall and
proceed to Bancroft. Not award winners, and not many faces...but a
different perspective.

Next, Joyce Hoffer supplied thirty photos with tons of plebes and lots of
faces!! These are panoramic sized photos so you will see more plebes in
every one. She has plenty of faces before, during and after the Induction
Ceremony. I always enjoy Joyce's photos and she even sent some photos taken
last year that I thought I would add at the end of this page. All these
plebe photos!! I decided that all you plebe parents should have something
to look forward to. One is a terrific photo of the fireworks from last
year's Ring Dance, the second is a shot of an incredibly beautiful USNA
Class Ring - you should not miss this - and the third is the traditional
photo taken on the steps of Preble Hall each year after Herndon of the
Women's Novice (Plebe '04) Crew Team. Thanks, Joyce, for sharing these
great shots!

And, Finally, Dev Mahadevan was on the Yard on July 1st to see her '02
daughter. While she was there, she caught several groups of plebes doing
what plebes do during the summer - mostly going from one place to another!!
Lots of plebes, lots of faces, lots of chances to see your Plebe! Thanks
Dev for sharing with us!!

Go to the USNA-Net Website www.usna-net.org and click onto "Photo
Gallery" in the menu items. On the Photo Gallery page, look directly under
the "Roller coaster" quote for "I-Day (pt.2)/Plebe Summer Photos"

Enjoy!!

TWO THINGS...

FIRST:

We got a note from a Plebe Parent today that suggested an idea that we
liked.

She said that it would be kinda nice to be able to see not only how long it
is to PPW, but to also see how long it has been since I-Day.

Soooo, if you take a look at the Main page of the USNA-Net site:
www.usna-net.org
you will see TWO countdown clocks - one that shows (in minus days, hours and
minutes) the time since I-Day, and the other that shows the time until PPW.

SECOND:

I have added new countdown clocks to the "Countdown Clocks" page on the
website - accessed from the menu items. ALL classes, from Plebe to Firstie,
can see how long it will be until their Commissioning. From 309 days for
the Class of 2002 to 1408 days for the Class of 2005. Something more to
look forward to!! :>)

To all,

Yesterday I received two notes from two different parents (among all the
other email...).

One asked me if it would be okay to send a lengthy inspirational quote to
the lists. Because of the nature of these quotes - one may be appropriate
and another not - there is a rule against posting such things. I explained
that she could not send her quote to the list.

The second was from a Plebe father, Keith Thurston, who shared with me a
poem that he had written about I-Day. He knew that our List Rules prohibit
sending poetry to the lists. Even good poetry is NOT allowed on our Lists,
and we all know that all poetry is not "good" poetry. He sent it to me
after reading, on Mike's and my personal website, some of the poetry that
Mike has written. He thought I might like his work. I DID !!

So I got his permission to create a webpage of his poem which I have loaded
to the USNA-Net Website. It is called "Last Gaze" and I think it is a
wonderful addition to our "Family Interests" page.

Take a minute to read this, and if you like it, you can send Keith a note by
clicking onto his name at the end of the poem. Talent should always be
encouraged, whether in our Mids or in ourselves!! :>)

You can access his poem by going to the USNA-Net website: www.usna-net.org
and clicking onto "Family Interests" from the menu items. His poem is the
first one in the list of items on this page. After you have read the poem,
you might want to explore the other 19 items on this page. There are other
poems, there are essays - by Mids, by parents, by one who left the Academy,
even a page called "The Fourth Class System," written by a West Point grad
who explains just how important the Plebe training is and why something that
made NO sense at the time, made perfect sense once he was involved in
conflict.

You will also find Inspirational quotes - I sent one a day to my son during
his plebe summer - I don't know if it helped him, but it helped me! And
don't miss the Plebe Humor page!

There's a lot of good "stuff" there, and I am glad to add this emotional,
well written poem. Thanks, Keith!

For those of you who have been asking about the Chat Room and why there is
never anyone there when you enter... Mike has put up some suggested times
for you to go to there.

He has placed them on the Chat Room page - the first page you go to when you
click on the Chat Room Link from the Menu items on the main page of the
USNA-Net site.

These are suggestions only - you can go in any time and discuss anything.

You know, all those things you CAN'T mention on the lists are fair game in
the Chatroom - only rule is, you have to be civil. We do not moderate, nor
do we save, in any fashion, what is posted there. Once it is off the screen
it is gone forever. You can't even print what is on the screen for further
reference, like you can with IMing.

So, if you are interested, take a look. Go anytime you wish, and if no one
is there, just try another time. Mike and I set up this room as a service,
and we WANT you to feel free use it.

------------Original Message -------------------------

I am an active duty Navy pediatrician stationed at the National Naval
Medical Center (NNMC) in Bethesda, MD. I have read on the usna-network
lists, parent's concerns about their seriously injured or ill
plebes/midshipmen. My daughter is in the Class of 2005. While I do not
have the time to go out to the Medical Clinic on the grounds of USNA and see
patients there (or check on the status of x-rays and lab studies), if any
plebes or midshipmen are hospitalized here at the National Naval Medical
Center (where they are referred for surgery, serious illness, or
subspecialty evaluations), I would be happy to offer my support services.

I would not usurp the role of their primary physician or medical consultant,
but rather, I can visit your daughter or son and let them know that there is
someone here who cares about them when their families are too far away to
visit, relay messages to and from them, bring them essential items they
might need while in the hospital, mail their letters to you, etc. I do
travel a great deal in my present job, but when in town, I would be happy to
help out and be a surrogate mom when real mom and sponsor mom can't be
there. I can only imagine how difficult it would be to have a child
hospitalized hundreds or thousands of miles away and not be able to be there
in person.

I also want to reassure you that NNMC is the "Flagship of Navy Medicine".
Both this hospital and the clinic at Annapolis are staffed with outstanding
health care providers who will provide excellent medical care to your mids.
I have been in Navy medicine for 28 years and have found military medical
personnel to be professional, caring, bright, and compassionate. Your kids
are in good hands.

If a hospitalization here at NNMC arises, I can be reached via my office
phone or through my office email address, listed below.

Additionally, I have had the pleasure of meeting some of the firsties who
are here at NNMC on summer rotations learning about medical careers. They
have been wonderful -- polite, enthusiastic, bright, and full of thoughtful
questions. The future of Navy medicine looks bright!
